THOMAS BRADLEY Campus editor bradley.321@osu.edu Soon after Florida quarterback John Brantley took a knee on EverBank field to seal the victory for the Gators’ victory over the Buckeyes, the final note was struck from the Ohio State University Marching Band under the direction of Dr. Jon Woods. The lyrics of “Carmen Ohio” were written to symbolize the spirit of OSU. After OSU’s loss to Florida Monday, the cheerleaders and a few Buckeye football players gathered around Woods and the marching band and celebrated that spirit with the playing of “Carmen Ohio.” The moment brought a tear to Woods’ eye. “Jon Woods has played the soundtrack to the

Ohio to play key role in presidential election SARAH STEMEN Oller reporter stemen.66@osu.edu As President Barack Obama begins his re-election campaign in Cleveland Wednesday with an economy focused event, one Ohio State professor is speculating that Ohio will play a key role in determining the outcome of the 2012 presidential election. David Stebenne, a professor of law and history at OSU, explained how important Ohio is to Obama’s presidential campaign. “There are about nine states that have flipped back-and-forth during elections. Only one of them has enough electoral votes that if Obama carries only that one state, he doesn’t need the other eight,” Stebenne said. “And that one state is Ohio.” According to multiple media reports, Obama will speak at Shaker Heights High School on Wednesday to revive his efforts for boosting the economy. Stebenne said Obama’s campaign advisers have paid close attention to Ohio.
“It encourages the team on Obama’s campaign to argue that Ohio should be a top priority because they could lose all the others,” he said. “They could lose the Virginias, the North Carolinas, the Indianas, the Colorados, if they carry Ohio.” But Stebenne said the Democratic Party is not the only party closely watching Ohio. “The Republicans are even more aware of the importance of Ohio,” Stebenne said. “No Republican has ever been elected president without carrying Ohio. So the likelihood is increased that both parties will go all out in Ohio in 2012.” Stebenne said the 2012 presidential campaign will be unique for Ohio, due to the circumstances. “The economy is not great in Ohio and the state has lost a lot of jobs, so I have no idea what campaigning will be like,” he said. “The housing market is also not good. So it’s not the easiest terrain for the incumbent.” Some OSU students said they know the importance of voting in Ohio during the 2012 presidential elections.

Buckeye Nation for over a quarter century,” said Jon Waters, assistant director of the marching band. “For the football team, Dr. Woods has been there for some great moments and provided that extra boost and extra motivation for fans and coaches and players over the years.” Twenty-eight years ago, Woods took over as the director of the marching band and quickly made the band his family. Woods, 72, has been in the OSU marching band program for 38 years. “The band, I think is his family,” Waters said. “He’s a father figure and a mentor and he promoted that family feeling all the while he was here.” Because of the sheer amount of time Woods has been in the marching band program, he has been able to touch several generations of Buckeyes. “There are so many generations of band students who have come through who had him as a director,”

Urban Meyer held a meeting with non-senior members of the Ohio State football team at 7 a.m. Tuesday to officially begin his tenure as head coach, and social media chaos ensued. According to multiple players’ Twitter accounts, the team was informed that the use of the social media platform was no longer allowed. Just hours later, some players backtracked on their Twitter accounts, denying that such a ban had been implemented. Junior tight end Reid Fragel tweeted from his account, @FRAGEL88, around noon Tuesday, saying: “New staff new rules. No more twitter, not a big

As she sat in her office nestled in the corner of Enarson Hall with a distinct view overlooking the South Oval, Freeman reminisced about her years as an undergraduate on campus during the turbulent ‘60s, how that experience shaped her view of the world and how she hopes students, present and future, will take advantage of Ohio State’s resources. “When I think of excellence into eminence, I think of Dr. Mabel Freeman,” said David Roy, associate director of Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience. “All of us in the admissions and First Year Experience office are proud of our success in not just getting students in the door, but keeping them here, and that is the hallmark of Dr. Freeman.” For the past 11 years, Freeman has played a vital role in the admittance and subsequent lives of those tens of thousands of graduates whether they knew it or not, through her position in the admissions office. “In a university setting, it isn’t just about getting into your career, it’s about learning about the world, and taking advantage of the speakers, programs, other students and faculty and realizing that you don’t get another four years in your life quite like the undergraduate experience.” Freeman said. Freeman said she will be starting at Columbus State Community College as a part-time special adviser to President David Harrison this spring. She began at OSU as an undergraduate in the ‘60s where she went on to earn three degrees in the education guidance and counseling field. She taught in the Columbus School district and worked as assistant director of OSU’s honors center before she landed the position as vice president of FYE in 2000. Freeman will have devoted 27 years of work to OSU. When she first started at OSU in 1985, the school’s admissions system was open to everyone. Freeman said she helped elevate OSU to its current status as a highly-ranked school with competitive admissions. “So many colleges and universities’ goal is to increase the number of students,” Freeman said. “At Ohio State, our goal each year is to increase the quality.” Through her programs, Freeman said she hopes OSU will continue to propel students into challenges and learning experiences in hopes to guide their futures.

OSU student dies in NJ accident, 4 injured CHELSEA SPEARS Lantern reporter spears.116@osu.edu An Ohio State student was killed in a car crash Monday in Clinton Township, N.J., according to police. Four other young adults were also injured in the one-vehicle accident, but no other fatalities occurred at the scene, said Christopher Kay, New Jersey State Police Trooper. No names have been released by authorities at this time. At around 4 p.m., the vehicle in question, a 2012 Chevy Equinox, drove off Interstate 78 and crashed into several trees. Investigators suspect fatigue as a cause and toxicology reports are pending, Kay said. The fatality, a male student from Malaysia, was ejected from the car while the other passengers were entrapped in the vehicle. The students were traveling from New York City to return to school and all are believed to be OSU students, Kay said.
Two of the five passengers are believed to have not been wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, including the deceased student ejected from the rear of the car, Kay said. Two passengers were Life Flighted to the Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J. The male passenger sustained life threatening head injuries and is listed in critical condition. The female obtained acute injuries and is in critical care. The driver and other passenger are listed in stable condition after they were taken to the Morristown Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening medical care. The driver has been released from the hospital but the three other passengers remain in the hospital’s care in their same medical states, Kay said. The names of the students involved in the accident will be released once the student’s family is notified of his death. Representatives from OSU have not yet returned request for comment.

Woods said “He’s had a lot of great moments in Buckeye football,” Waters said. “Not only the football team. I think the band transcends university wide, state wide and nationally. I think Jon Woods has really brought Ohio State to a new level.” During halftime of the Gator Bowl, the band performed a double Script Ohio in front of 61,312 in attendance at EverBank field. While senior “i”-dotters Jon Lampley and Peter Droll dotted the formation at the bowl game, this is a tradition that Woods has had the honor of participating in. During the Penn State game, Woods’ last home game as band director, Lampley, a fourth-year in jazz studies, walked with Woods to the top of the formation as Woods dotted the “i.” “That was something I’ll never forget. People have called (Script Ohio) the greatest tradition in all of college sports and he’s meant so much to that tradition,” Lampley said. “He absolutely deserved that. It was unbelievable just to be in the band at that moment.” Woods said it was an unbelievable moment in his career. “(Dotting the “i”) was very meaningful, and it was a moment in life I will never forget,” Woods said. Only a handful of non-band members have had the opportunity to dot the “i” during Script Ohio. These include Bob Hope, Woody Hayes, Jack Nicklaus, John Glenn, President E. Gordon Gee and more recently, Leslie Wexner. While Woods was able to participate in the dotting the “i” tradition, he said the band was known for so much more than that. “One might ask what is the greatest tradition of the band. Is it the Script Ohio? Is it the ramp entrance? Is it ‘Hang on Sloopy?’” Woods asked. “The most important tradition we have is a history of the tradition of excellence.”
BRITTANY SCHOCK / Asst. photo editor
Jon Woods is retiring after 38 years of service in the marching band. Lampley shared that sentiment. “He really is concerned, not just with the success of the band, but with the success of each individual student that are in his bands,” Lampley said. “The best tradition in the band was the tradition of excellence. (Woods) worked so hard so we can achieve that excellence.” Waters is set to take over as interim band director for the 2012-2013 season, and said he is excited about the opportunity. “We are all just stewards in this position,” Waters said. “Whether we are in it for just one year or like Jon Woods was for 28 years. We are all caretakers of this wonderful tradition.” Woods said that through the years, his love for the music and his love for the band members stayed the same. “It’s a great thrill to stand in front of that band every week, during the football season, and conduct them and to hear them play,” Woods said.

Ryan Pelfrey, a second-year in political sciences, said he enjoys following elections in Ohio. “It will definitely be a close election and Ohio is going to be a key state,” Pelfrey said. “With the state economically, and with foreign affairs that this country is in, it will be interesting.” Pelfrey said a lot depends on the GOP candidate elected. “I think that things will heat up when the GOP candidate is elected and we will be more sure,” Pelfrey said. Twitter, or another social media platform, would be unlawful. “If (the ban) were narrowed to a subject, possibly that would be OK. Possibly,” said Goldberger, an OSU football season-ticket holder and supporter of the new coaching staff. “I have my doubt about this, but there may be topics that the coach can put out of bounds, but to say that you can’t use a social media is far too broad. It’s like saying you can’t talk.” Goldberger said players could voluntarily pledge to abstain from using a social media platform. Nate Riggs, a Columbus-based social business consultant, said a possible ban would have been an interesting decision considering Tuesday was Meyer’s first day on the job. “You see this (bans) at large corporations all the time. I get why he would do something like this,” Riggs said. “He’s trying to basically shut off all distractions

One tweet from a 20- or 21-year-old kid can end up all over national news.” Considering that the ban would have been imposed on college athletes, Riggs said an education program to teach student athletes how to use social media properly would be a more appropriate option. “At the end of the day, Ohio State is an educational institution. Having an education around using a tool like Twitter … you should be learning Twitter if you’re going to be going into marketing, or sales or operations,” Riggs said. At least one OSU football player — sophomore wide receiver Corey Brown — wasn’t fazed by the ban-turned-rumor. From his account, @phillybrown10, Brown said: “I’m not leaving my followers lol.”

trucks compete in racing and freestyle events, among other competitions. “It’s all about 10,000-pound trucks, with about 800 horsepower,” said Carl Van Horn, a Grave Digger driver. Before the show, fans can get an up-close look at the vehicles competing at Party in the Pits, which includes an autograph session, among other activities. This year, three new versions of Grave Digger will also be on display. Each design stays true to the color palette of black, bright purple and neon green and the familiar Grim Reaper motif that has become the team’s signature. The original Grave Digger was built in 1981 by Dennis Anderson from discarded car parts from a junkyard.

“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” When it comes to murder and torture, seemingly nobody does it better — in the film world, that is — than David Fincher. Based on the Swedish book of the same name, “Dragon Tattoo,” while certainly not a feel-good film by any means, is a visceral take on its source material, led by a gripping performance by Rooney Mara that should garner her some serious awards consideration.
“Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” (PS3, Xbox 360, PC) “Skyrim” is fifth in the series of the “Elder Scrolls” saga. Much like the previous games, it is an open fantasy world filled with dragons, mythical creatures, magic and danger. You choose your adventure in this one-player fantasy world and all decisions are left up to the player. You can accept quests, fight enemies, steal or do good. The graphics in “Skyrim,” as compared to the previous “Elder Scrolls” games, are much better and the vast amount of weaponry, magic and adventure is unmatched. Bethesda Game Studios, again, outdid itself with “Skyrim.”

“Batman: Arkham City” (PS3, Xbox 360, PC) Admittedly, anything involved with Batman is instantly awesome in my opinion, but the engine and game play in “Arkham City” makes this already outstanding video game series even better. The last edition, “Arkham Asylum,” left me wanting to kick even more ass, as I finished the campaign all too quickly. The difficulty in “Arkham City” increased, the complexity increased, and because of that, I enjoyed it so much more.

“Midnight in Paris” Storytelling is seemingly a lost art, so when a film such as Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris” comes along, it’s to be cherished. In fact, it might also be one of the rare, truly great films made more by the performances of its supporting cast than its lead, Owen Wilson, which is a real testament to how well-rounded of a film it is. Plus, anyone who likes surrealist jokes will love Allen’s portrayal of Salvador Dali.
“Portal 2” (PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Mac) When the first “Portal” game arrived, it was simple but new. Valve’s expansion on the original, quaint puzzle game, “Portal 2” is an instant classic, not only serving up a bigger universe inside Aperture Science to explore, but richer characters, a more fleshed-out story and new gimmicks that expand on its predecessor. The game’s villain, GLaDOS, is one of the best in recent gaming memory, thanks in part to the game’s swell voice acting, and the game’s physics, powered by Valve’s famous Source engine, bring enough to the “Portal” world to result in one of the greatest puzzle games ever.

“Moneyball” It’s hard for me to fall in love with sports films, mostly because many of them are cheesy and overblown. “Moneyball” isn’t that. Led by Brad Pitt’s commanding performance as the general manager of the Oakland A’s, this well-crafted, behind-the-scenes look into the team’s unusual strategy for building a successful baseball team is the new crème de la crème of sports flicks.
Want the latest entertainment news from around town?
Grave Digger has since expanded into a team of trucks that tour simultaneously to compete in events. After 30 years and four Monster Jam World Finals wins, Grave Digger has become a crowd favorite. “It’s really cool because Grave Digger is the most popular monster truck out (on the track). Whether I’m in Howland or Japan, the crowd gets a little louder,” Van Horn said. Royal British Legion Industries, a group of builders from the United Kingdom, has been working on a project built entirely out of K’NEX construction toys in tribute to Grave Digger set to debut in early 2012. It is rumored to be a life-size Grave Digger truck, Van Horn said. “A monster truck rally is something
“The Muppets” There are few greater things than taking in a movie that restores my hope that humanity is capable of creating something truly beautiful. “The Muppets” does just that. Wondrously charming and backed by a super fun soundtrack, “The Muppets” is not only a welcome piece of nostalgia for fans, but also a perfect opportunity to initiate a new generation to these fuzzy friends.

“Drive” It’s easy to be disheartened by the state of action films these days; they’re as big, dumb and derivative as ever. That’s not the case with “Drive,” director Nicolas Winding Refn’s stylish action-thriller starring Ryan Gosling. “Drive” isn’t great because it’s attempting to be a high-brow, looking-downits-nose entry into action but because it’s the sum of several exceptionally well-made parts: Its pulsing score, retro feel and campy violence make “Drive” the kind of serial fun that most action flicks should strive for.
“Gears of War 3” (Xbox 360) In high school, I was simply obsessed with the original “Gears of War.” I would play hours on end into the night, defeating the Horde, collecting COG tags and sticking the enemies with grenades and running like hell. The campaign in “Gears of War 3” is almost as good as the campaign in the original, which in my opinion, can really never be topped. This was a refreshing addition to the series, as I found “Gears of War 2” rather disappointing. The added multiplayer modes online and the awesome story line make “Gears of War 3” one of my favorite games of the year.
1.
“Battlefield 3” (PS3, Xbox 360, PC, iOS) I love war games, and “Battlefield 3” is the best game I have ever played. The graphics are almost scary. It runs on a near-perfect engine that makes it look more lifelike than anything else. The use of bigger maps and increased weaponry in the multiplayer mode allows players to strategize and execute smart game play rather than the typical run-around-and-shoot game. The amazing graphics and gameplay make “Battlefield 3” my game of the year, and I am now really looking forward to “Battlefield 4.”

Katy Perry, Russell Brand latest celebrities to fail America with failed marriage OLLER Reporter SARAH STEMEN stemen.66@osu.edu Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian, Demi Moore and
Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony: At the beginning of last year, these pairs were some of Hollywood’s most powerful and happy couples. America has painfully watched as each couple has separated sometime during the past year. In the most recent divorce, the most heartbreaking in my opinion, Katy Perry and ex-beau Russell Brand decided to end their 14-month marriage after Brand filed for divorce on Dec. 31, citing irreconcilable differences. It really makes me wonder if Hollywood weighs on these marriages or if the institution of
marriage is just being abused by those in the limelight. Everyone has his or her own opinion concerning Humphries’ and Kardashian’s 72-day marriage, which cost about $10 million. The highly publicized wedding raked in about 4.2 million viewers, earning the couple an estimated profit of around $17 million. Then again, we have couples like Moore and Kutcher, whose marriage lasted six years. After rumors swirled of Kutcher cheating on Moore with blonde bombshell Sara Leal, the two split in November. In perhaps one of the most
shocking splits of the year, J-Lo and Anthony parted ways in July, leaving 3-year-old twins Max and Emme with separated parents. The two seemed to be one of Hollywood’s most committed couples. Lopez seemed emotional about the separation, breaking into tears during a performance in October. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems that some of the highest-profile couples decided to split in 2011. With the American divorce rate steady around 50 percent, are the paparazzi embellishing these divorces, or is the spotlight simply too much for these couples? Celebrities either need to stop
getting married or stop getting divorced. I feel like there was so much pressure on Kardashian to get married that she made a square peg fit into a round hole. After following her for years on “Keeping up With the Kardashians” and watching her go through men like Reggie Bush, her Australian bodyguard Shengo and even potential interest Miles Austin, I felt like Humphries was just another guy. Her short-lived marriage was a disappointment to many. I personally believe marriage is what you make of it. I hold marriage to be something that is sacred: a
promise to someone. You don’t get married because you like someone or because you think you do. Realistically, just because you kind of like someone doesn’t mean you should marry them. Watching all these couples break up is painstaking for many Americans, and I’m sure divorce isn’t easy. So maybe celebrities should stop taking marriage so lightly and they wouldn’t have to deal with divorce.

OSU freshman forward Sam Thompson dribbles the ball in the Buckeyes’ basketball game at the Schottenstein Center against Nebraska Jan. 3, 2012. OSU won, 71-40.
Nebraska no match for men’s basketball MICHAEL PERIATT Asst. sports editor periatt.1@osu.edu Ohio State basketball coach Thad Matta apparently wasn’t too pleased after Friday’s loss to Indiana and took it out on his players in practice. “(Matta was) not very nice,” sophomore forward Jared Sullinger said. “I’m going to be honest with you, but we kind of needed that. We gave up that game.” It appears Matta’s tough love worked. OSU dominated Nebraska, 71-40, Tuesday night at the Schottenstein Center and avoided losing consecutive games for the first time since the 2009-10 season. “We just learned from the mistakes,” senior guard William Buford said. “Just don’t make the same mistakes over and grow as a basketball team.” Buford and Sullinger both said that growth started on the defensive end of the floor. Nebraska won the opening tip, but tight Buckeye defense forced a shot clock violation.
It was a sign of things to come. Through the game’s first eight minutes, OSU forced seven turnovers and the Buckeyes jumped out to a 17-4 lead. “I think we played defensively with the intensity we needed to play in tonight’s game,” Matta said. A layup from Nebraska’s Corey Hilliard got the Cornhuskers within ten, but on the ensuing possession, OSU sophomore forward Deshaun Thomas out-jumped Nebraska’s defenders to grab the offensive rebound and finished at the rim despite being fouled. Two OSU possessions later, Sullinger spun away from the Nebraska defense near the right baseline, absorbed a foul, and kissed the ball off the back backboard before it landed through the net. He sunk the free throw and gave OSU a 31-15 lead. Nebraska never showed signs of threatening again. “We finally drew the line and said enough is enough,” Sullinger said. “I think that’s what extended the lead tonight.” Sullinger nailed a 3-pointer before time expired to give the Buckeyes a 44-20 lead at intermission.
But Sullinger’s 3-pointer doesn’t tell the story for the Buckeyes offensively. OSU pounded the ball inside all night. They finished with 42 points in the paint in large part due to Sullinger and Thomas finishing in the paint for easy buckets. Sullinger finished with 19 points, and 12 rebounds while Thomas added 15 points and 4 rebounds. Buford also finished in double figures with 13 points. “Offensively, with the exception of 3-point shooting and turnovers I thought we did a pretty good job of executing and getting the ball where we wanted it,” Matta said. Overall, OSU shot 54 percent from the floor while holding Nebraska to 31 percent shooting. The win gives the Buckeyes a 14-2 overall record and a 2-1 record in conference play. Nebraska’s record drops to 8-6 on the year and 0-3 in the conference. OSU next takes the floor Saturdayin a road game against the Iowa Hawkeyes. Opening tip is set for 3 p.m.

Legacy of football seniors up for debate Pat Brennan Sports editor brennan.164@osu.edu

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — You could use three words to describe the now-departed Ohio State football senior class: good, bad and ugly. For several Buckeye seniors, whose legacy to OSU football might be in question, Monday’s seasonending 24-17 loss to Florida in the 2012 Gator Bowl, was an opportunity to reflect on the highs, the lows and the forgettable moments of their OSU careers. Several players, including senior center Michael Brewster, pointed to back-to-back Bowl Championship Series victories in the 2010 Rose Bowl and the 2011 Sugar
Bowl as a reminder of the class’ accomplishments. “We had a good run in the middle — two BCS bowl wins, three Big Ten championships,” Brewster said. “There were a lot of what ifs about this year — what could have been. But we won a Sugar Bowl and a Rose bowl back-to-back. I think that’s something that’s pretty amazing.” The 2011 Sugar Bowl victory to which Brewster referred — a 31-26 win against Arkansas — was later vacated by the university, along with the entire 2010 regular season, for NCAA rules violations. To be sure, OSU football’s class of 2011 enjoyed bowl triumphs, or “good” moments. Then the 2011 season began — a season some members of Buckeye Nation might consider a low moment.
What we think of their legacy and what you write about their legacy is two completely different things. For us, we know what they’ve fought through and battled a lot of things. We know what they mean to us, and how we feel about them.” Luke Fickell Ohio State co-defensive coordinator OSU lost seven games for the first time since 1897. The campaign fraught with turbulence on and off the playing field for each team member,
but especially the members of the class of 2011. The season-ending defeat to Florida elicited different reactions from the departing Buckeyes and their teammates that remain. Off-field transgressions — many of which were committed by OSU seniors — resulted in penalties for OSU football. On Dec. 19, the NCAA Committee on Infractions handed the team a one-year postseason ban and slashed a total of nine scholarships over three years due to multiple violations. In December 2010, five OSU football players — former quarterback Terrelle Pryor, senior wide receiver DeVier Posey, senior left tackle Mike Adams, senior running back Daniel “Boom” Herron and redshirt senior

his OSU jersey for the final time Monday defensive end Solomon Thomas — were suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season after selling Buckeye football memorabilia in exchange for improper benefits in the form of tattoos. Redshirt sophomore linebacker Jordan Whiting also received a one-game ban. Posey, who was suspended for a total of 10 games for two separate NCAA violations, said there weren’t many on-field positives for him to draw from in 2011. “It’s definitely not wins, and it’s not like a good
been a part of OSU football, saying the experience was “surreal.” “You get to here and you’re so excited to play for a prestigious program like Ohio State,” Sweat said. “You experience all the highs that we’ve experienced, and obviously this season was full of lows. But that only makes you better as a person. Players like Moeller and Sweat might be cause for former coach and now-co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell’s affinity for the departing seniors. “What we think of their legacy and what you write about their legacy is two completely different things,” Fickell said. “For us, we know what they’ve fought through and battled a lot of things. We know what they mean to us, and how we feel about them.”
The football team should ban Twitter use

football season as far as things go,” Posey said. “This was definitely a humbling experience.” Not all OSU seniors’ careers were marred by controversy though. Redshirt senior linebacker Tyler Moeller removed his OSU jersey for the final time Monday. The game brought about an end to Moeller’s six-year career at Ohio Stadium, which saw the player battle back from injuries and an assault and subsequent brain trauma. “It’s sad and disappointing at the same time,” Moeller said of leaving the Buckeyes. “Having your last game to take it (your jersey) off be a loss, it’s tough. It’s been a great journey. Ending with a loss is just tough.” After Monday’s loss, senior linebacker Andrew Sweat talked about the pride he takes in having
When I saw Ohio State tight end Reid Fragel tweet late Tuesday evening that new head coach Urban Meyer had banned his players from Twitter, I was thrilled. I was happy to hear that the new sheriff in town was going to get rid of the potential embarrassment this university faces on a daily basis every time one of its football players decides to share his opinions with the entire world. Don’t get me wrong, I love the First Amendment. I love being able to tell Michigan fans what I’d like to do with their ugly-looking jerseys when they visit Columbus every other fall, express how I feel about any person, place or thing in the world and as I close in on 4,000 tweets myself, I certainly love to express how I feel in 140 characters.
I can get as nasty as I want. But there’s a reason for that — no one cares about who I am. Without looking at the byline right now, most of you reading this story probably have no idea whose words you’re reading. Buckeye football players, on the other hand, are going to receive a lot of attention when even the slightest controversial phrase comes flying out of their mouths — or in this instance, their fingertips. This isn’t a team that needs any new distractions, and this is Meyer’s first rodeo when it comes to dealing with Twitter distractions. This is a lesson one of Meyer’s former recruits from Florida learned the hard way. Will Hill – ESPN’s secondranked high school football prospect in the nation when he committed to play for Meyer’s Gators – faced national criticism when he decided to let his Twitter followers know about when he received oral sex in his car while he was “blowing on that sour.” Using context clues from his other tweets, I believe that “blowing on that sour” is slang for smoking weed. Five months later, Hill tweeted that a “chick” was trying to give him oral sex for “father’s day.”
He followed that up later in the month by telling his followers that was he was “Taking a sh-t in the airport.” Don’t get me wrong. I know that not everyone is going to be as extreme as Hill. Hopefully, for the well-being of our country, we never see anyone quite as graphic as Hill on Twitter ever again. But the fact of the matter is no one is going to think any player is a great individual by what he puts on his Twitter feed. I mean, really, has anyone ever seen an athlete’s tweets and then seen him in a national headline, praising that person for his greatness? The answer to that question is no. But from former Buckeye wide receiver Santonio Holmes telling a tTwitter to “kill yourself,” to Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson’s girlfriend hacking his Twitter and accusing him of cheating, when it comes to athletes at both the professional and college level, it’s been proven time and time again that the downside is far greater than the upside. The lesson to be learned is that in the world of football, players need to make statements on the field, not the keyboard.

Specialist Jay Thomas, left corner, of Richmond, Va., and other soldiers from 1st Cavalry, from Fort Hood, Texas, load their bags before leaving Iraq and Kuwait for the U.S.
Imagine the entire Columbus metropolitan area ceasing to exist, nearly 2 million people gone. Then add another half million. That’s the number of U.S. service members who have been killed or wounded since 1775. Nearly 40,000 are still declared as missing. I hate to use approximations, because no life lost, body wounded or service member missing in action should be discounted. But the numbers matter much less than the fact that they all have family members, too. And the 2.5 million quickly becomes multiplied as we look at those touched by the death and destruction of war. As of Dec. 30, America has lost 6,337 service members from the combined wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In many cases, these men and women left behind supportive families: mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends, brothers
and sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Many had not yet reached 30, and quite a few were parents. That last part gets me. I read an article a few weeks ago in The Plain Dealer about a young boy whose Christmas wish was for his father to come home for the holidays. The parents and family of the boy were able to concoct a surprise, and it was heartening to know that the little boy got his wish. But it’s also sad to know that some children might have that same Christmas wish every year. As the new year is upon us, I find it the proper time to reflect. I am not a fan of war. I find it deeply troubling and confusing. But above all else, I find it sad. The people that fight our country’s wars do so with what I believe are the best intentions. And while the U.S. is not perfect, it is a place where we can all be patriots and disagree sharply with each other or our government—and then do something about it. That’s what we’re protecting. That’s what those 2.5 million people worked to protect. And I think that’s why millions of families continue to support
their loved ones’ decisions to join the military. We can’t let those that came before us die in vain; we must ensure that our flag never touches the ground. To the families of lost service members, I’d like to say thank you. As we enter a new year, I thank you for loving someone who loved their country enough to die for it. We seldom see such conviction. Your sacrifices as a family are not lost in the numbers. Loss doesn’t always make us rational; it makes us emotional. And I’m overflowing with gratitude for what I’ve been given. Perhaps we can all take comfort in knowing that the pursuit of happiness is a road made possible and paved by our nation’s service members, their families, and the hope that we all might make a lasting impression along the way.

Letter to the editor: Three strikes, Smith should be out Monday’s Gator Bowl loss is now the regrettable postscript to Ohio State’s most distressing season. That season should have ended discreetly, quietly Nov. 27. But OSU still has Gene Smith calling the shots. Once more with worldwide TV coverage, the public heard detailed reminders of our recent shame. My alma mater could have, should have avoided the additional embarrassment. But Smith is still in charge. That has to change. Smith squandered at least three perfect opportunities to convince the NCAA that Ohio State had “Tattoogate” under control. Smith should have stepped in before last year’s Sugar Bowl and forced Coach Tressel to bench the tat crew. When Tressel abdicated his leadership role by asking players to vote on the benching issue, Smith should have smelled a rat. We now know why Coach T did not lay down the law himself. Hindsight tells us he had knowledge of violations before the season started. That made the head coach an accessory. Worse
yet, the moment The Vest informed Pryor’s mentor, Pryor knew Tressel knew. Had Smith boldly insisted violators sit out the Sugar Bowl, he might have forced the whole ugly cover-up into the light. Instead he opted for the passive approach, the leaderless option of doing nothing. His wimpy inaction gave credence to the widespread slander that Ohio State cares only for winning and money. Smith’s second chance to send the NCAA the right message came after this year’s upset victory over Wisconsin. Smith should have seized the initiative with a self-imposed, postseason ban. That dramatic stand would have compelled the NCAA and Buckeye haters everywhere to acknowledge OSU’s principled response. Smith had the option to negotiate from strength, but he blew it. Instead, his let’s-see-whathappens policy missed golden opportunity No. 2. Smith’s last failure to convince the NCAA somebody was running a tight ship at OSU came with his eager acceptance of this year’s Gator Bowl invitation.
A bowl reward for a 6-6 record should be embarrassing enough to program pride. But to miss one final bid to send the NCAA and public at large a principled message is both inexcusable and unforgivable. I say three strikes and you’re out, Gene Smith. No doubt officials on the NCAA review panel felt the need to teach the OSU athletic director a lesson he apparently could not grasp on his own. Had the Buckeyes benched the tat boys, had they self-imposed a bowl ban this year, there would have been no need for next year’s bowl exclusion. Gene Smith’s shortsighted handling of his department penalized next year’s innocents, the players and the new coaching staff, plus recruiting. OSU’s athletic program cannot hope to restore its reputation or project a positive public image with Gene Smith at the helm. He needs to go. He needs to go now! Fire Gene Smith. Several students enjoy an indoor cycle class during free fitness week at the RPAC on OSU’s campus on Sept. 29, 2011.
OSU should offer more physical activity class options on nights, weekends LANTERN Columnist
KRISTEN MITCHELL mitchell.935@osu.edu
For the last four quarters, I have wanted to take a physical activity class here at OSU. Every quarter when I’m planning my schedule, and about five back-ups because being blocked out of classes is a nightmare, I always check on the classes available at the RPAC. There are a ton of classes that I would love to take offered every quarter: yoga, boxing, badminton, tumbling, table tennis, etc. I could keep going, but the point is that we have a ton of great options.
Wednesday January 4, 2012
The catch? Most of these classes are offered between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., a time when I’m typically at other classes. While I’d love to take yoga and push economics off for another quarter, I can’t really rationalize that to myself, or my parents, for that matter. So in my year and a quarter at OSU, I haven’t been able to take advantage of any of these classes. We’re supposed to be this super fit university of students who work out all the time, but with real winter cold quickly approaching, I don’t see that in my cards. Last year, my roommates and I were feeling really ambitious and decided to buy RPAC fitness passes for Winter Quarter, convinced that we would go to all these classes and have so much fun. But after the first week of the quarter, we went to exactly 1.5 classes — we left one class halfway through. Therefore, I need to sign up for a class that I’m required to go to, that way I know I can’t just stay curled up at home with a mug of hot chocolate on cold winter
days, half-heartedly thinking about how I should really go workout, but knowing that I don’t plan on leaving my room until spring. I’m too afraid of failure to skip a class I’m getting credit for, I know that about myself, and I really want to take these classes — but I can’t. Between my regular 15 hours of class, an internship, a job and just living in general, my afternoon time is already stretched a little thin, and I’m by no means the only one. These physical activity classes should be offered at times that are more convenient for students. I know very few people who have the flexibility to take these classes, but I know a lot of people who want to. More of them should be offered after 5 p.m., or even better, just on Fridays, when a lot of students (except science majors, sorry guys) don’t have any classes. This university prides itself on having top-notch recreation facilities, so help make it easier for students to use them.
