Twenty Ohio State students lined up in the basement of Converse Hall before a storm of 22 mm bullets erupted around 7:30 p.m. Thursday. This commotion wasn’t the result of a violent attack or a military training exercise. For Janet Josten, a third-year in animal sciences, this was another meeting of the OSU Pistol Club. According to americanfirearms.org, at least 120 million Americans own a firearm. Josten is one of the estimated 15 million to 20 million female gun owners in the United States. Josten was introduced to guns as a member of Boy Scouts of America Venturing Crew 698, and she continued to develop her shooting skills as a member of her high school rifle team. “Just because it’s explosions doesn’t mean it’s not something that girls can do,” Josten said. As vice president of the OSU Pistol Club, Josten spends her time sharing her passion with a diverse group of OSU students, all with different skill levels. “I do wish that more people were comfortable around (guns),” Josten said. At the age of 18, it is legal to purchase a rifle, which is a longer firearm designed to shoot from the shoulder. It is illegal for any person under the age of 21 to purchase or own a pistol, which is a handgun that can be semi-automatic.
Sierra Bray, a second-year in international studies, is secretary of the OSU Pistol Club. Bray was introduced to guns in 2009 during her time in basic training for the U.S. Army Reserves. “It’s nice being able to control something that is dangerous,” Bray said. The Army focuses on rifle shooting, so Bray joined the OSU Pistol Club in order to improve her pistol capabilities. Bray said without the opportunities provided by the OSU Pistol Club, she doesn’t think she would be able to practice shooting outside of the Army. Not all women are drawn to guns for self-defense purposes. Some women inherit their love of firearms from family members. Jackie Stotlar, a first-year graduate student in the department of women’s, gender and sexuality studies, received her first .22 caliber long rifle when she was six years old. Stotlar said she practiced shooting games, and three years ago, she began to go to the shooting range with her father. She said it’s unusual for daughters to accompany their fathers to the shooting range. “I was the only woman, and the only … young person,” Stotlar said. Stotlar said there was some tension between her and the older, male club members whose jokes and political opinions sometimes made her uncomfortable.

Halloween might be a few weeks away, but the Haunted Statehouse tours at the Ohio Statehouse have already begun. The tours give a ghostly version of some of Ohio’s political history. Visitors are led through the Statehouse by lantern light and guides in 1880s attire into rooms with various historical recreations. “While it’s not a goblin, ghoulish sort of scary tour like you typically see in haunted houses, it lends itself to this time frame.” said Gregg Dodd, deputy director of communications for the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board.

Breast cancer patients and survivors will now be able to pass through airport security with more privacy because of new breast cancer prosthesis identification cards. The prostheses that some breast cancer survivors wear are detected by airport Transportation Security Administration body scanners when previously-used metal detectors did not. The cards are similar to those ID cards used for pacemakers and other prosthesis, but are meant specifically for breast cancer prosthesis and to provide a discreet explanation to the security officials. Electra Paskett, associate director for population sciences at OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital, and a breast cancer survivor, said her experiences with the TSA body scanners left her outraged. “When going through airport security I was

and has a limit of 40 visitors per tour, with this year’s sold-out tours bringing a total of 800 people through the Statehouse doors. Most of the expenses for the tour are staff pay, Dodd said. The entire event costs about $500 to put on each year. The revenue made from the event goes into funding educational events at the Ohio Statehouse. The tour changes almost every year, with certain stories being added or dropped from the program. The stories are based on handed-down legends and historical facts about Ohio or the Ohio Statehouse itself, according to Dodd. This year, there was no new story added, Dodd said, because of staff cuts and last-minute

The CSRAB is the managing agency for the Ohio Statehouse. The Ohio Statehouse is the only statehouse known to hold such an event, Dodd said. The Ohio Statehouse has been holding the Haunted Statehouse tours for 13 years. The idea for the tour was originally created jointly between The Ohio Historical Society and the Ohio Statehouse, Dodd said. This year’s tours were sold out in about a week. This isn’t an uncommon occurrence, as the tours have sold out for the last six years, Dodd said. The Haunted Statehouse tour is held Friday and Saturday for two weekends this October (Oct. 14, 15 and Oct. 21, 22), with tours departing every half hour from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Each tour lasts approximately 35-45 minutes,
pulled aside and asked if security could pat my chest down. I explained to them that I was wearing prosthesis. They told me they would still have to pat me down. I asked that they do it in private. They did, and then completed their check for explosives. The procedure was very uncomfortable. I thought that they should be able to tell the difference between what is dangerous and what is not,” Paskett said. Paskett was also concerned for others who go through the same situation. “I thought that the whole process was very rude. People around you know what’s going on,” Paskett said. “It can be hard for women who are sensitive about explaining their situation in a public place and to strangers.” Paskett collaborated with Vera Garofalo, the manager of the Hope Boutique in the OSUCCCJames. Together they came up with the idea for the prosthesis ID card. “It is meant to identify their prosthesis, so the patients don’t have to explain they just hand security the card,” Garofalo said. The cards hold the patient’s identification, provider’s information and how many prostheses a

Several Columbus-area organizations participate in Ohio State’s Columbus on Campus event in the Ohio Union on Oct. 18, 2011.
Event showcases Columbus organizations SARAH IGNATZ-HOOVER Lantern reporter ignatz-hoover.2@osu.edu It’s not everyday that coal miners, women from the 1860s, ballerinas and representatives from the Santa Maria are in the Ohio Union together, but they were all on hand for Mortar Board’s Columbus on Campus. The event, put on by the senior honorary Mortar Board, brought together 15 Columbus and Ohio State organizations to help students see what organizations exist beyond campus in Columbus. Mortar Board is a nationally society that recognizes outstanding academic achievement in college seniors. Many organizations came in full costume, and some in full character, as actors from the Ohio Historical Society roamed the Union questioning students on their peculiar dress and customs. Some of the organizations represented included the Ohio Historical Center, BalletMet, The Santa Maria, COSI and Electronic Arts, among others. The biggest difference between this event and others like Buck-i-Frenzy, is that Columbus on Campus is interactive, said Becky King, a fourthyear in strategic communication and the major events chair for Mortar Board. “We’re working with organizations to get them to kind of interact and engage students instead of just passing pamphlets and brochures,” King said. The Ohio Statehouse was in attendance with a large map of Ohio including counties that students played a version of the game “Twister” using questions about Ohio counties to win prizes.
“I think that they really enjoy our booth because we’re doing ‘Ohio Twister,’ we’re debuting our game, it’s a prototype, and we’re having a lot of fun,” said Gregg Dodd, the deputy director for communications at the Ohio Statehouse. Katie Backus, a second-year in animal sciences, said she came after seeing the actors from the Ohio Historical Society and hearing there was free food, but played the “Ohio Twister” game and said it was fun. While Backus is familiar with most organizations being from the area, she said “for people who aren’t from around here, it’s nice to see what everything is in Columbus.” Cody Salyi, a first-year in biology, saw the event online and wanted to come to learn what the city had to offer. “I don’t know much about Columbus, so this was cool to see what’s out there,” Salyi said. Salyi said some organizations he looked at were the art museum and BalletMet, and he was able to talk to COSI about getting involved with internships. “I thought it was pretty helpful because I went to (the COSI table and) I grabbed some stuff from them,” said Maryknoll Palisoc, a second-year in biochemistry. Palisoc said she also found other things she would like to see in Columbus from the event, including the Ohio Statehouse. Columbus on Campus took the place of Mortar Board’s annual pillow-fight event because it was not contributing enough money for the organization that hosted it, so the new event was designed to help new students learn about the city, King said.

A look at students who have transferred to Ohio State.
2,428 first-year transfer students
Possession of Drugs A male student reported possession of drugs at Morrill Tower on Monday, Oct. 17. The case was closed.
Many Ohio State students do not start their academic career at OSU. In fact, more than 25 percent of the 2011 graduating class started their education elsewhere, according to admission statistics. Incoming Autumn 2011 transfers totaled 2,428 students, but calculating course equivalents from semester universities and colleges to OSU’s quarter system is where it seems to get tricky for some. Michele Molnar, a fourth-year in strategic communications, said the semester-to-quarter credit conversion caused her to lose a lot of credits and drop one of her majors. Molnar transferred after spending one year at American University in Washington, D.C., where she was a political science major. “I wish I would have known the exact number of credits I would lose and I wish I would have known that (OSU doesn’t) count classes lower than the 200-level for your major,” Molnar said. After spending two semesters taking entry-level courses in the political science major at American University, Molnar said she wasn’t aware until paying full tuition and taking classes that many of her classes wouldn’t be considered credit at OSU. “I ended up not double majoring in poli sci,” Molnar said. “I thought I would have a lot (of credits) but I didn’t have any. I’m barely going to graduate in the spring because of it.” The quarter-to-quarter credit transfer seems to fare a lot better with students. Kevin Patrick, a fourth-year in international studies security and intelligence said he only lost a few credits when transferring from the University of Cincinnati, also on the quarter system, last winter. “I’ve had to take more (GEC) credits to catch up because (OSU requires) more,” Patrick said. “The fact I already had friends up here (helped my transition) and they were kind of my segway,” Patrick said. “They helped me pick out my classes, so without them it would have been a lot worse.” Rob Reed, admissions counselor in undergraduate admissions and First Year Experience, said in an email that credit is offered by multiplying the semester hour by 1.5 to get the equivalent hour on the quarter scale. When OSU switches to semesters, quarter hours from other universities will be multiplied by .67. When students keep their syllabi from courses taken at another institution, Reed said advisers often look at the syllabus in order to determine the correct credit, otherwise credit will only be given as general credit. From autumn 2011 undergraduate enrollment, about 6 percent of the 42,916 students were transfers, Reed said in the email. Depending on the major, a transfer student will typically be given three options: direct enrollment into a program, a need to meet a specific GPA and class requirements, or applying for admission to their specified major. The enrollment criteria varies by major. Reed said in the email that admissions for transfers as opposed to first-year admission is “more straight-forward.” Students earning 30 semester or 45 quarter credit hours will be looked at only by their college GPA, where a 2.5 or higher will make a student a good candidate. Students with lower GPA’s are still considered. “Transfer students will have typically taken a lot of the general education courses,” Reed said in the email. “The largest strain on the academic system is with incoming freshmen who tend to all need to take the same classes.” First Year Experience offers programs through its Transfer Students Activities Board to help transfer students transition. Luncheons and dinners are held where transfer students can meet and talk with other transfer students going through the same process. Students who transfer but are still unsure of where to go in their academic careers might choose to enroll in the University Exploration Program, or EXP. EXP works with students working on eligibility within their major, who want to explore different major options, or who need particular GPA’s or prerequisite coursework. Twenty-two percent of incoming transfer students were admitted to the EXP program, Amy Treboni, administrative director for university exploration, said. “One thing OSU has is a lot of majors,” Treboni said. “It can be hard to identify the major that’s the best fit for you.” EXP also focuses on helping undecided students choose classes that a majority of majors require. “Transfer students are different,” Treboni said. “They already have college experience.” Megan Gridley, a third-year in exploration, transferred to OSU after two years at Virginia Tech. She said she enrolled in exploration because she was unsure of her major choice. “I was engineering (at Virginia Tech), but I don’t like it,” Gridley said. “My problem is I just don’t know what I’d do instead.” Her decision to transfer after two years stemmed mainly from location. “I live (in Pickerington, Ohio) and I didn’t like living in two states,” Gridley said. “I like that (Ohio State) is bigger.”

Tour visitors are predominantly adults who enjoy history. cancellations. Special effects with lighting and smoke machines were added to the tour to make the experience new for this year’s visitors. One of this year’s stops during the tour was a visit to a replica of former President Abraham Lincoln’s coffin. Visitors walk around Lincoln’s coffin, situated in the rotunda in the Statehouse, as history is given on the event. This part of the tour is based on the actual showing of Lincoln’s coffin in the rotunda at the Ohio Statehouse on April 29, 1865, which 50,000 people from Franklin County attended. Other stops on the tour include a visit to Victoria Claffin Woodhall, who ran for president
against Ulysses S. Grant in 1872 and claimed to have psychic visions and see ghosts. Visitors also encounter President Lincoln waltzing at a dance with Kate Chase, daughter of former Ohio Governor Salmon P. Chase, in the Senate Chamber. Although the tour is child and family friendly, Dodd said the majority of visitors tend to be adults. “For the most part we see adults. The tour’s not geared toward small kids or even teenagers per say… (mostly) people that love history,” Dodd said. Volunteers make up many of the actors and tour guides each year. The statehouse recruits some volunteers, while others return each year. “Many of them are theater-minded individuals, people who love the theater, because they become the character,” Dodd said. Though planning for the next tour won’t start until January, students interested in volunteering for next year’s tours can contact the Ohio Statehouse.

“Once I was able to feel comfortable … I was able to stand up for myself,” Stotlar said. “They’re usually really respectful about it.” Stotlar said she experiences the emotional highs and lows that come with any other sporting activity. “The first time you shoot it and you hit the target, it’s just a good moment,” Stotlar said. “(It’s) like any time you do any sport right for the first time.” Josten agreed. She said she enjoys practicing the focus and accuracy needed for target shooting. “I only do target shooting,” Josten said. “It helps relax me, helps block out things I’ve been … stressed about.”
Bray said she likes the statistic of about 15 million women owning guns. “There’s a lot of people that still think only men should handle guns,” Bray said. “I feel proud when I see a woman at the range.” Bray said guns can be valuable for self-defense, but she also said that everyone shouldn’t own a gun. There tends to be a split along the lines of gun control, and a lot of the fear around firearms is based around myths and stereotypes, Stotlar said. “People are okay with women having guns,” Stotlar said. “People aren’t okay with people having guns.” Bray said people who aren’t afraid of guns usually think her hobby is interesting. “Some people don’t like football,” Bray said. “Some people don’t like guns.”

ID cards are not meant to replace TSA scanning. cases women did not know why they were being pulled aside from airport security, they did not know that the reason they were having body searches and pat downs was because they had prosthesis that set off the scanners,” Garofalo said. Paskett said she thinks the cards have been well received by TSA, but that the cards are not meant to get anyone out of being scanned. Paskett said that she is OK with being scanned, but wanted more privacy. “I just wanted discretion and respect,” Paskett said. “I don’t want people assuming I’m a terrorist.”
OSUCCC-James patients can request the card at the Hope Boutique, where the boutique can look up their basic information, their purchase date and get the providers’ and physicians’ signature needed to validate the card. Garofalo said that the boutique has also been getting calls from non-OSU patients. “We’ve had calls from all over the country from people who have seen them,” Garofalo said. “We are able to send them a blank card so they can get it filled out and validated. We have had calls from all the way in Miami, Fla., and many other locations.” Garofalo said the boutique has not been tracking the distribution of the cards, but said that they will start doing so.

studentvoice Thrill of victory replaced by sadness in IndyCar series
dan hope hope.46@osu.edu
lantern Columnist
Anyone who has passionately played a sport, or watched their favorite sports team compete, has experienced the thrill of victory and agony of defeat. On Oct. 16, the thrill of victory was taken away, and defeat was no reason for agony, for drivers, teams and fans of the IndyCar Series. This was supposed to be a great day for IndyCar. It was the final race of the season and a series champion was to be crowned. It was also the first time the series returned to Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 11 years. But this is not why the day will never be forgotten in motorsports. On the 11th lap of Sunday’s IndyCar World Championship event, 15 of the field’s 34 drivers were involved in what
may be the most destructive auto racing crash I have ever seen. One of those 15 drivers was Dan Wheldon, who was racing for only the third time this season,
but had achieved great success this year by winning the series’s most prominent race, the Indianapolis 500, for a second time this May. Unfortunately, Wheldon was after the thrill of victory, but he never got the chance to experience the agony of defeat, for he was killed in that instant. After Wheldon’s death was announced, the drivers unanimously decided to cancel the race. They finished with five tribute laps to honor Wheldon. No longer did it matter who won the championship. Dario Franchitti clinched the title for the third consecutive time, but it was not mentioned on the TV broadcast and it seemed to be the farthest thing from Franchitti’s mind. On this day, that thrill of winning a
championship was taken away from Franchitti. Instead, he experienced an agony far greater than defeat. Both he and his friend had taken the track for the race that day, but his friend never made it off. I imagine that Franchitti would give all of his championships back for Wheldon to return to life; from Franchitti’s pure emotion in the moment, that was clear. I had no plans to watch any of the IndyCar race on this day. The race could have come and gone and I would probably not have taken any notice, opting instead to focus on NFL football games. After learning of Wheldon’s death, and witnessing the tribute, enjoying the football games became impossible. We should all continue to enjoy
sports, celebrating when our teams are victorious, and languishing in the disappointment of their defeats. Whether or not one is a fan of auto racing, this event should force one to put the grand picture of sports into perspective. In the IndyCar community, when one man was lost, the entire community bonded together. No one was a winner on this day, but one driver lost everything. One family lost a husband and father. One sport lost a star. One community lost one of its own. There was no agony of defeat on this day, just a shared sadness. With IndyCar now in its offseason, there is little doubt that the series community will continue to help each other and Wheldon’s family through the tough healing process.

Trio of guitar greats get gig in Columbus CAROLINA PEGUERO Lantern reporter peguero.6@osu.edu Acoustic guitarists Andy McKee, Stephen Bennett and Antoine Dufour will make their way to Columbus for the first time as a collaborative group with their Guitar Masters Tour. The Columbus Association for the Performing Arts has invited the guitar trio to the Lincoln Theatre Saturday at 8 p.m. Each will showcase solos, where they will be playing with musical elements and percussive styles on the harp, steel string and fingerstyle acoustic guitars. Each guitarist has their own track record in the music industry and has traveled across the world introducing acoustic rhythms and influences. McKee, a solo acoustic guitarist, specializes in the steel string guitar, and with his tunings, tapping and two-handed technique, he can attempt to make it sound like he is playing in a full orchestra. His latest CD/DVD package “Joyland” will also debut in the concert and will be featuring a collaboration of songs from Bennett and Dufour. “It is a new take on those songs,” McKee said. “We do one song from each artist as a collaborative piece, so it’s a new interpretation and makes it more interesting for people that haven’t heard my songs before.” McKee has played in Columbus in the past and hopes to have success in his visit with Bennett and Dufour. “It is always nice to come back to Columbus and do a show,” McKee said. Bennett, a composer, musician and harp guitarist, bases his musical influences and style from his

CHRIS SCULLIN Lantern reporter scullin.9@osu.edu When Aleksa Palladino isn’t busy starring as Angela Darmody on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” she spends her time recording and performing music with her husband, Devon Church. Together, the pair makes the foundation of the New York-based electronic, indie-rock band Exitmusic. The band is touring to promote its new four-song EP, “From Silence,” which was released Oct. 4. They will be performing at Outland Live Friday at 7 p.m. with Phantogram. While the band has been around for a few years, there is no exact moment that they formed, because it happened over time. “We sort of formed gradually,” Church said, who plays guitar and keyboard. “The two of us lived together, and we both love music. We started writing more and more songs together, and eventually we had an album.” Their songwriting process is based on the slow buildup of pressure in daily life, said Palladino, the lead singer. “The way we write is often from a place that you can’t really reconcile in (your) day-to-day life,” Palladino said. “It’s kind of just stuff that happens to you, and you need to do something with it, so you write.” The band also has Dru Prentiss on the drums and Nicholas Shelestak on electronics. Palladino’s purpose in writing music is not merely to tell others how she feels, but rather to discover her own emotions.

Electronic indie-rock group Exitmusic is scheduled to perform at Outland Live Oct. 21, 2011, at 7 p.m. “The real attraction to doing it is just being completely surprised with what I find out about myself,” she said. “There’s been plenty of times when I’ve written songs and didn’t realize that something was weighing that heavily on me on a conscious level.” The emotional epiphanies that drive Palladino’s writing are only briefly represented in the band’s new album, with the hope that she will be able to more
fully explore them in follow-up albums, Palladino said. “‘From Silence’ is sort of like a little entry into a world that will be more fully explored next spring with the release of the full-length album,” Palladino said. Since Exitmusic’s 2007 debut album, “The

Ooh la la! La Dispute’s rising star set to shoot over the Newport JACKIE STORER Lantern reporter storer.29@osu.edu Michigan-based screamo band La Dispute is playing at Newport Music Hall Sunday along with rock bands Thrice, Moving Mountains and O’Brother. The doors open at 6 p.m. The band kicked off its U.S. tour Friday in New Jersey to promote the release of its second full-length album, “Wildlife.” “I would argue this is one of the best tours we’ve been on in a while,” said drummer Brad Vanger Lugt. While on tour, frontman Jordan Dreyer said the reaction of the audience to their new material is something he hasn’t gotten used to. “For one, as an artist, you make music for yourself and for the people immediately around you than I think you do for outside approval,” Dreyer said. “But I think any artist would be kidding themselves if they … didn’t admit that it matters what other people think.” While he hasn’t gotten used to hearing people singing along to their songs at concerts, Dreyer said it’s flattering when they do. “To have people paying attention is a pretty awe-inspiring thing,” he said. “It makes playing the songs even more fun than it already is.”
On this tour, Dreyer said half the show consists of their older songs while the other half is from the new album. The writing process for the album started in 2008 with the release of the previous album, “Somewhere at the Bottom of the River between Vega and Altair.” “One of the biggest things we wanted to do was to challenge ourselves as individuals and as a group,” Dreyer said. It was all about trying to top what they’ve already accomplished, he said. The inspiration used to write “Wildlife” came from different aspects of life in general and not other musicians or events, Dreyer and Vanger Lugt said. “A lot of it was just how we’ve grown as people and as musicians since the last record came out,” Dreyer said. Before they became touring musicians, the band started playing together for fun in Grand Rapids, Mich. Starting in 2004, the band practiced in a warehouse and liked to perform at local bars with
encouragement from those around them, Dreyer said. “It’s really incredible for us to be a part of a community that is accepting and tolerant and loving and selfsustaining in a way,” he said. It gives him a very large extended family, “which is a great feeling,” he said. While La Dispute’s music is well known to them, not many people on Ohio State’s campus are familiar with the band. Josh Edwards, a first-year in exploration, said while he’s not a fan of the band’s heavy style of music, he is a fan of how it’s getting its name known. “When bands are able to come … and get exposure, especially on such a big campus like this … (that helps) so they can actually do something with their band,” Edwards said. Touring the U.S. and gaining exposure for the band all go into what inspires the members most — life. That inspiration actually transcends the lyrics in the songs and goes into other aspects of the member’s lives, Dreyer said. “The thing we love the most is
not just the act of creating (music) … but also all the ways that which that (music) extends into other things: the friends you make, the people you meet, the situations that you’re in,” Dreyer said. “That’s a very all-encompassing feeling.”

Solo effort from Fall Out Boy frontman will leave listeners stumped MATT LOVETT Lantern reporter lovett.45@osu.edu Fall Out Boy is on hiatus, and nothing has solidified that greater than “Soul Punk,” Patrick Stump’s first solo release since abandoning his role as pop-punk’s superstar. Without the limits of traditional musicianship, Stump strives to tap in to the much more pop side of things. “Soul Punk” is exactly what I would’ve expected from a solo Patrick Stump: a slew of pop and R&B-esque tracks. This is particularly evident in the hyper-pop beginnings of the record with the tracks “Explode” and “This City.” Stump croons in
his pseudo-squeal of a voice, but instead of music sounding like “Dance, Dance” it’s the sound of “Got Money.” Once again, I cannot say I’m surprised about the turnout. However, one ought to give credit where it is due. Stump is a gifted producer, and for that I’ll salute him. The record definitely has a crisp sound and professional quality to it. Stump also messes around with different instrumentation, save the hard rocking guitar moment on “Run Dry (X Heart X Fingers).” Even though it’s nice to see a musician grow and experiment, it would be a lie to say that Stump has done anything particularly original here. “Soul Punk” will go up with the likes of Maroon 5’s “Songs About Jane” for predictable songwriting backed with high vocal pitch.
The album’s opening tracks serve as a template for the significantly less catchy songs that follow. Case-in-point: On the song “Everybody Wants Somebody,” Stump sings, “Everybody wants somebody who doesn’t want them” then goes on to shout about “not getting hurt, baby.” Boring. The album continues as such in its hardly surprising manner, finally concluding with a cute remix of “This City” with Lupe Fiasco. It sounds like T-Pain met up with Panic! At The Disco. Stump’s solo release is painfully radio friendly, which is unfortunate. Stump is extremely talented as a producer and a musician (he played all of the instruments on Soul Punk by himself). Stump is mainly misguided with his talents, producing superficial tunes instead of something much greater.

Puscifer perfects terms of parole in sophomore full-length album
JESSICA SHAMBAUGH Copy chief shambaugh.14@osu.edu
“Conditions of My Parole” seems to be a fitting title for the sophomore studio album from Puscifer. Puscifer gets its notoriety from its creator and only permanent band member, Maynard James Keenan, the vocals behind Tool and A Perfect Circle. Keenan has described his experimental side project as his “creative subconscious.” While the band’s 2007 debut album was full of explosive guitar riffs and biting story lines, Keenan seems to be playing by a new set of rules and giving his intentionally offensive lyrics a rest for now.

great-grandfather’s music, who also played the harp guitar. He introduces old tunes from the 1900s and modern harp melodies. He has released recordings, live performances and has published several instructional books like “Harp Guitar Basics” and “Fingerstyle Finesse.” Dufour, a fingerstyle acoustic guitarist, has released six albums in his career and has toured in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. His music influences include jazz and folk styles, which are found on his albums “Convergences” and “Still Strings.” Bennett and Dufour were not available for comment.
The opening tracks “Tiny Monsters,” “Green Valley” and “Monsoons” are uncharacteristically soft and slow. The songs are catchy and belong on a soundtrack for relaxation. The lack of counterculture in the lyrics and soothing background music may come as a disappointment for fans of Kennan’s previous work, however. Things seem to pick up around the middle of the album, with tracks like “Man Overboard” and “The Rapture (Fear Is A Mind Killa Mix).” Keenan sheds the ambient sound and returns to the powerful rock his followers are used to. His lyrics improve and his perfect articulation over an inconsistent beat in the background make “Man Overboard” the unsettling experience. Still, Keenan’s knack for in-your-face lyrics and defying social norms remains absent. The title track provides the best source of

comedy rock, reminiscent of their previous album. The track opens with Keenan shooting out a story of the narrator’s most recent arrest, and continues with the strange story of the man’s crimes and his fear of the woman he’s wronged. “The Weaver” is easily the best song on the album. It provides a sound similar to past work, but progresses enough to serve as a bridge between the two sounds. While the album is off to an unusual start, strong songs in the middle and a great finish make the album an unexpected success and certainly worth a listen.

Exitmusic’s future includes new album in spring, music videos Decline of the West,” Palladino’s attitude toward her own voice has changed drastically. “I had such a weird relationship with my own voice that I didn’t really wanna hear it,” she said. “I think I’ve grown into myself a bit more, and my voice a bit more. I’m not afraid of it.” For the most part, Exitmusic’s songs consist of calm yet strong background music topped with Palladino’s eerie, soothing vocals. Palladino said they try to combine solid song structure with an engulfing wave of sound on every song. “We love the idea that if you strip away all of the production, the song could just be played on a guitar with a voice and it’s gonna stand up on its own,” she said. “But at the same time, we love sound and
sound design so much. So I think it’s really finding a way to marry both of those successfully.” Andrew White, a fourth-year in civil engineering, said Exitmusic is too different for his taste. “It’s a little too extreme and too unusual for my liking,” he said. “I like a lot of progressive stuff, but this is way too alternative.” Church said the future of Exitmusic is sure to be eventful. He said that on top of the full-length album that is scheduled to be released next spring, they are filming music videos and touring the United States as well as Europe. “There should be a lot of fun stuff coming up in the next year,” he said.

Oakland Raiders’ starting quarterback Jason Campbell broke his collarbone during the team’s 24-17 win against the Cleveland Browns Sunday. With only Kyle Boller and former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who was selected by the Raiders in the NFL’s supplemental draft on Aug. 22, on their roster, Oakland completed a Tuesday trade that brought former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer to the team. Pryor, Oakland’s No. 3 quarterback, may have a chance to lead the Raiders offense as a result of Campbell’s injury, but not this season. After being suspended for first five games of the Buckeyes’ 2011 season, Pryor departed OSU on June 7 to pursue a professional career, and was selected by Oakland in the third round of supplemental draft. Pryor was suspended from games and practices through Week 5 of the NFL season by commissioner Roger Goodell, and was not on the Raiders’ active roster for Sunday’s game against the Browns. Though Pryor will join the Raiders’ active roster this week for Oakland’s game against Kansas City, Vittorio Tafur, a Raiders beat writer for the San Fransisco Chronicle, said Pryor won’t be seeing the field any time soon. In addition to dropping on the team’s depth chart as a result of the trade for Palmer, Tafur said Pryor was nowhere close to being ready to play. “Palmer is going to come in and be the starter,” Tafur said. “Pryor missed five weeks on suspension with no practice time, so he probably goes back to being a project.”

Former OSU quarterback Terrelle Pryor (right) addresses media after being signed by Drew Rosenhaus’ (left) firm, Rosenhaus Sports Representation, in Miami, Fla., June 14, 2011. Tafur added that Pryor, who would be the thirdstring quarterback behind Palmer and Kyle Boller, will benefit from watching from the sideline. “That will give (Pryor) plenty of time to learn going into training camp next year,” he said. “I think this is probably good for (Pryor).” Kevin Noon, managing editor of Buckeyegrove. com, agreed with Tafur. “At this point I don’t see Pryor being a very viable option,” Noon said. “Could (Pryor) go in there and do a little something here or a little something there for a set or something? Sure, but the NFL game is not built the way the college game is.” Pryor quarterbacked for three seasons at OSU, though his entire junior season, which included a victory against Arkansas in the 2011 Sugar Bowl, was vacated. Pryor, along with five other players,
received improper benefits in the form of tattoos for selling OSU football memorabilia. Former coach Jim Tressel also failed to self-report the violations and knowingly fielded a team with ineligible players. Tafur said the Raiders won’t attempt to experiment with Pryor at other positions. “It’s been clear that the plan, as of now, is definitely quarterback (for Pryor),” Tafur said. “I think they’ll definitely give him a full training camp before they decide to alter that plan. I’m sure in the back of their minds, there’s always the possibility. As of now, Pryor is strictly a quarterback.” Noon added that there are no certainties, given Pryor’s employer. “But we are talking about the Oakland Raiders,” Noon said. “If there’s ever a team to sit there and kind of do things sideways, it would be the Raiders.”

William Buford could have been a hero for Ohio State. He caught the ball on the left wing and fired a three pointer that he hoped would save OSU’s dream 2010-11 season. But the shot came up short. The buzzer sounded, and just like that, the Kentucky Wildcats upset the No. 1-seeded Buckeyes and eliminated them from the 2011 NCAA tournament. Six months later, Buford still thinks about the Kentucky loss. He shot 2-for-16 from the field and finished with just 9 points, two rebounds and one assist. The Buckeyes lost 62-60 and any one of his 14 off-target shots could have changed OSU’s fate. “I shot 2-for-16,” Buford said during the OSU basketball team’s media day Thursday. “I had the shot to win the game. It was just crazy. Like, I just stayed in the gym because I never want that to happen again.” Buford said the painful images replayed in his mind everyday until about June or July, but, eventually, he had to move on. “I mean it’s still in my head, but I don’t sweat about it too much anymore,” he said. Along with the defeat, OSU lost a talented senior class that included the likes of Jon Diebler, David Lighty and Dallas Lauderdale who were considered the leaders of the team. “(Diebler, Lighty and Lauderdale) were the only three guys yelling, all hyper in practice, before

It’s a role his teammates said he’s embraced. “(Buford) is more of the laid back, quiet guy, but now he’s the only senior,” Thomas said. “We need that senior leadership. He changed. He started talking to us more, telling us what we got to do.”
Despite the lack of experience, the Buckeyes face high expectations this year with many publications predicting OSU to be among the top teams in the nation. But Buford said he doesn’t let the team or himself give it much thought. His experience won’t let him. “We’ve been predicted to go to the Final Four the past two years,” Buford said, “and we ended up losing in the Sweet 16 so that really doesn’t mean too much.” Buford has been working on changing his game, too. He said he focused all off-season on improving his strength so he could be more effective attacking the basket. “(The strength) is going to help me finish at the rim,” Buford said. “I was so skinny I was just getting bumped off. I would just throw the ball up because I was so skinny. I’m still skinny, but now I can take contact and finish at the rim.” Along with sophomore forward Jared Sullinger, Buford is one of the only two returning starters for the Buckeyes. Buford said he will be more in his comfort zone this year because he’s returning to his natural position. Last year, Buford started most games at point guard, but was asked to switch to shooting guard or small forward as different personnel entered the game. This year, Buford said he won’t be asked to play much point guard and can concentrate on playing off the ball. “I think it’s better because I’m back in my position,” Buford said. “I think I can show what I can do more.”
