WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Ohio State will need a miracle to qualify for the Big Ten Championship or BCS bowl games after its 26-23 overtime loss Saturday at Purdue. With less than a minute left in regulation, a 13-yard touchdown pass by Braxton Miller thrust OSU back into the game it had spent trailing the Boilermakers. An extra-point kick was all that separated the Buckeyes from their third straight come-frombehind win — and a kicker who had converted each of his 28 attempts in the season lined up to try for No. 29, which would tip the scales and all but secure a 21-20 Buckeyes victory. Purdue blocked the kick. The game went into overtime. And, the Boilermakers claimed a 26-23 victory with a 1-yard touchdown. Miller’s game-tying touchdown pass to running back Jordan Hall and the following botched extra-point attempt dominated postgame discussion between media and players. It was the play that may prove to keep OSU out of Big Ten title contention. To qualify for the Conference Championship, the Buckeyes must win their final two games against Penn State and Michigan. Should it accomplish that, OSU still would need a series of other cards to fall into place.

Senior quarterback Robert Marve (9) stretches the ball over the goal line for the victory in overtime during an NCAA football game between Ohio State and Purdue at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Ind., Nov. 12, 2011. OSU lost, 26-23, in overtime. OSU would need Penn State to lose its remaining games against OSU and Wisconsin. And, to top it off, the Buckeyes would need Wisconsin to lose to Illinois on Saturday. In their Saturday matchup at
Purdue, the Buckeyes faced deficits of 10-0, 17-7 and 20-14; their only scores leading up to the final minute of regulation had come on a 34-yard touchdown catch by Hall and a 6-yard run by Miller. Hall’s second touchdown
catch, with 55 seconds to play, appeared to have lifted the Buckeyes to victory. “I thought the game was over after

Student group runs for Somalian famine Ayan Sheikh Multimedia editor sheikh.51@osu.edu The Somali Student Association at Ohio State organized its first-ever 5k/one-mile run Sunday on the Oval in an effort to raise money for the victims of the famine in Somalia. Project Run for Life: Horn of Africa, was developed over the summer by SSA board members and OSU Undergraduate Student Government senate member Bilal Bajwa. Since then, Run for Life has raised $11,000 in donations from various businesses across Columbus, sponsorships from USG, student organizations and from several OSU departments, according to Zakaria Farah, SSA treasurer and a second-year in environmental engineering All proceeds from the event will be presented to Helping Hand for Relief and Development, a non-profit organization based in Detroit, Mich., which provides humanitarian aid in emergency situations, according to its website. SSA president and third-year international relations and diplomacy major, Simona Noor said Helping Hand was the perfect choice given that members from Helping Hand are on the ground in Somalia and in neighboring refugee camps in Dadaab, Kenya. “We wanted (Helping Hand) because they were on site. We could’ve sent it to the U.N., we could’ve sent it to all these other organizations, but we thought this was the best choice for us for now,” Noor said.

More than 200 students gathered for the Somali Student Association’s 5k run to help provide support for the Somali famine. The United Nations agricultural agency said in a press release in September that famine conditions had spread to a sixth area in Somalia, putting approximately 750,000 people in the country at risk of starvation this year. Despite the overwhelming humanitarian response to the drought and famine crisis in the Horn of Africa, the demand for food and health relief remains high, according to the U.N.
Farah said the purpose of the fundraiser was not only to raise money, but to also help spread awareness around campus of the ongoing issues in Somalia. “We wanted our project, our 5K and our experience to get others motivated to do something and be aware of what’s going on in the world,” Farah said.

Penn State students took to the streets after former football coach Joe Paterno was fired Nov. 9, 2011.
After the whirlwind of media coverage on major news outlets about former Penn State coach Joe Paterno’s dismissal for his knowledge of a sex scandal involving retired defensive coach Jerry Sandusky, it may be easy for Buckeye fans and students to compare PSU’s sex abuse scandal to Ohio State’s tattoo and memorabilia scandal. While one scandal is a legal issue and the other involves NCAA violations, students at respective schools still have similar reactions to the loss of a football coach. “There are similar reactions in the way (students) are responding to their team and their school and their coaches,” said Peter Cappucci, a first-year in mathematics. PSU’s retired defensive coach Jerry Sandusky is accused of sexually abusing boys in a charity program, The Second Mile, a foundation created by Sandusky to work with at-risk youth. Sandusky is accused of sexually abusing the boys in his home and in PSU’s football locker room, according the grand jury report. Paterno, athletic director Tim Curley, senior vice president for business and finance Gary Schultz, and assistant coach Mike McQueary allegedly knew of
the incidents happening since 2002 or before, but did not report it to the proper authorities. Paterno did, however, report the violations to PSU officials, but failed to report the issues any further. OSU’s scandal involved NCAA violations when football players sold memorabilia and received improper benefits from outside sources. Despite knowledge of the violations, former OSU coach Jim Tressel failed to report the violations. News of OSU’s NCAA violations occurred in December 2010. Tressel resigned in May, months after the 2011 Sugar Bowl against Arkansas and prior to the 2011 football season. About 200 students rallied and visited his home in Upper Arlington, Ohio, to show support and sing “Carmen Ohio.” After news of the sex scandal broke and Paterno cancelled his weekly press conference Tuesday, students rallied. About 300 PSU students showed similar support by appearing at Paterno’s house Tuesday evening. “I definitely think students rise to the occasion to support their coach, especially these two coaches,” Cappucci said. “It’s not that they were just one- or two-year coaches, they were long tenure coaches and they were loved for what they did for the success they had at their schools.” Paterno announced Wednesday morning he was to retire after the season, but PSU’s Board of

A new suit shop started by 3 OSU graduates recently opened in the South Campus Gateway.
OSU alumni pursue success with new shop COLLEEN CAREY Lantern reporter carey.259@osu.edu Three Ohio State graduates have opened a pop-up suit shop in the South Campus Gateway, called Pursuit, which sells new, brand-name suits to college-age men. Nate DeMars, founder and CEO of Pursuit, opened the store Oct. 20 with two friends he met through the MBA program in the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State. Shay Merritté and Anil Das partnered with DeMars in a class project for an entrepreneurship class in January. From there, the idea grew into the pop-up retail store at OSU after they graduated in June 2011. “Every guy on campus needs a suit for some reason, whether it’s for a job interview, a formal event, or some other function,” DeMars said. “The places where they were shopping weren’t really for them … I thought they were kind of outdated and boring or expensive and pretentious.” Despite its small space, the store has a surprisingly large selection, covering about 90 percent of men’s sizes, and special orders can be filled within a week, DeMars said. Pursuit’s target market is 18- to 24-year-old males seeking a Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Marc Ecko or DKNY suit in the price range of $199 to $399. “We are here for the guys that don’t enjoy the process of shopping,” DeMars said. “They want it simple and more convenient. They want someone they can get approachable advice from who’s
not trying to push whatever they have to make a commission.” DeMars said that the neighbors in the South Campus Gateway have been great, especially since there’s no competition. He mentioned possibly teaming up with one of the restaurants to do a holiday party before finals. Julia Garnica, a first-year graduate student in clinical counseling and employee at The Pub & Restaurant next door to Pursuit, said that The Pub would love to team up for a promotion for both businesses. “Absolutely, I’m sure that we’d love to do that,” Garnica said. Alterations are not available in the store but Pursuit has a list of recommended local tailors. “Our thought is that we’re pricing this very competitively so you can buy a $200 suit and go get $20 in alterations and you’re still saving money over going to most places,” DeMars said. Though its name might imply otherwise, Pursuit sells accessories like ties, suspenders and belts, as well as Homage brand T-shirts. What was supposed to be a one-month lease has turned into two and the store will now be open through finals week until Dec. 19. Chris Tudor, an employee at The Pub & Restaurant, said that they have been good neighbors, though he has never bought anything. “I’ve actually walked by a few times and checked out what they, had but I’m a sweatshirt and jeans type of guy myself,” Tudor said.

Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience presents:
With the release of the final “Harry Potter” movie on Blu-Ray and DVD Friday, many fans of the series will be wanting to drink in as much Harry Potter as possible. Luckily, there’s a whole cupful waiting for them: The Quidditch World Cup. Ohio State’s 43rd-ranked quidditch team played in the fifth annual Quidditch World Cup in New York City this weekend, competing against teams from the U.S. and Canada. Quidditch is originally a fictional sport played in the “Harry Potter” series, but was adapted in 2007 to be played by people in real life. Since then, the sport’s association with the books has diminished, at least to some. Dan Miller is the president of OSU’s quidditch team, and said that although quidditch started off as just a fictional sport in the popular “Harry Potter” series, the activity has grown into something more. “It’s becoming its own sport,” said Miller, a third-year in atmospheric science. “It’s kind of becoming known as being separated from the book and being known as a sport. It’s kind of exciting to see (the) boom in popularity.” There are more than 100 teams in the International Quidditch Association, 64 of which competed this weekend. In comparison, there were only 12 teams in the World Cup in the 2009. The first rounds of play kicked off Saturday and OSU lost its first match to Penn State. The Buckeyes then beat Canada’s University of Victoria
in their second game of the day. OSU lost to Emerson to conclude Saturday’s matches. On Sunday, OSU beat the 23rd-ranked University of Richmond, 40-20, to send the Buckeyes into the single-elimination tournament. Each team is grouped with four other teams, and they must play against one another to determine which of the five teams will qualify for tournament play. The top-three teams from each pool moves onto the tournament. OSU placed third in its pool. In the tournament Sunday, OSU beat a regional team, the Toms River Hydras, but lost in the next round to the University of Florida to end its 2011 tournament life. The object of the game is similar to the fictional version: find the snitch, score more points. According to the International Quidditch Association’s handbook, the snitch, in real life, is a player who has a tennis ball in a sock. The human snitch has the right to do whatever he or she wants in order to prevent the ball from being caught, which is worth 30 points, according to the head referee of the IQA, Chris Beesley. The 26-year-old referee has seen snitch runners do many things, including driving away from the game in a car. There were more than 22 hours of quidditch played on nine different pitches (fields), Beesley said, with the final match culminating at Icahn Stadium Sunday evening. With the rapid success of the sport, Beesley said he is amazed at how excited each team is to compete this weekend. “It’s grown so fast and so much, a lot because of the passion of the people,” he said.

Owners said they might take the suit shop on the road. Sean Edwards, a third-year in biology, said he has not been to Pursuit yet, but plans on checking it out soon. “Well, I love to wear suits as is so if (Pursuit is) cheaper than other places I buy them, I will definitely have to check out what they have,” Edwards said. DeMars said some of the pains with being a new business are working themselves out as people are learning about the new store. “What we’re surprised with is having a lot of people stop in just because they’ve walked by and didn’t know we were here,” DeMars said. “Now we’re getting to a point where the word is starting to spread through friends and online and having people come in specifically to buy a suit. So that’s the encouraging part that makes us want to try another month here and see how it continues to build.” DeMars said the average college male buys a suit only twice in his college career. Pursuit is looking to supplement the store with other types of clothing. Student and Greek organizations might also be eligible for 5 percent of their sales to be donated back to their organization. A travelling suit truck is also a business possibility DeMars said he and his partners have considered taking to other colleges in the area. The name Pursuit obviously hints to its main merchandise, but DeMars also explained that it relates to a stage of life. “It’s a little bit self-explanatory … when you’re buying products like this, you’re buying them for major life events,” DeMars said. “We’re helping outfit guys for the pursuit for whatever they’re after.”
Hall’s touchdown,” said redshirt sophomore right guard Jack Mewhort. “We knew we were going to score. We planned on scoring, kicking the extra point and getting out of here with a win,” said senior left tackle Mike Adams. “Obviously, that didn’t happen.” But the Buckeyes weren’t discouraged after Purdue defensive tackle Bruce Gaston sent Basil’s kick fluttering into the end zone. “That was a plus for us, tying the game up even after being down,” said OSU senior linebacker John Simon. “We knew we had to come into overtime and execute well and, unfortunately, we didn’t execute as well as we should have.” After fifth-year senior quarterback Robert Marve reached for the goal line to score Purdue’s gamewinning touchdown in overtime, his bench, along with many of the 43,334 fans in attendance at RossAde Stadium, stormed the field. The loss throws OSU back into a game of catchup in the Big Ten Leaders Division. The Buckeyes dropped to 6-4 overall, 3-3 in conference

SSA hopes to make Run for Life an annual event. Approximately 200 participants gathered at the Oval and each was given the option to either run the 5K or walk a mile. Both groups took different routes. Those that opted for the 5K started at the Oval then went past the Ohio Stadium, over to Lane Avenue and all the way to River Watch tower before heading back to the Oval. Participants that opted for the one-mile, walked to 17th Avenue and then headed back to the Oval. Bajwa said hosting the event at the Oval was no easy task. “The main reason we fought to have it in the Oval (is) because of the idea we’re promoting here, (which is) OSU is giving back to the community,” she said. Ryan Terek, a third-year in accounting, expressed his outlook on the event and the cause at hand.
Riot from 1A
OSU, PSU will face off in the ‘Shoe Saturday. Trustees vice chair John Surma announced Wednesday night that Paterno was “no longer head coach, effective immediately.” Thousands of students reacted by rioting on campus streets, throwing rocks and tipping a news van to its side in outrage about Paterno’s dismissal. While OSU students were upset about Tressel’s departure, some students think that the riots on PSU’s campus were too much. “(Paterno’s) done a lot of great things for (students) so I understand that when he goes out the way he did that they’re not going to be happy,” Cappucci said. “Some of it might be a little bit extreme, but you have got to move past it.” Carlin Kelly, a fourth-year in veterinary medicine, said she thinks PSU students reacted too violently in comparison to OSU students’ reaction to Tressel leaving. “There are similarities (in reactions), but we didn’t overturn a news van or something,” Kelly said. Others were not shocked by PSU students’ reactions. Jennifer Tripi, a first-year in exploration, said she was not surprised to hear about the riots. “I think it was definitely well-expected. (Paterno) was a respected coach and I think obviously because it is in the middle of football season, students are not going to be happy about that,” Tripi said. With all the publicity, Buckeye fans also cannot help but analyze the differences between the two scandals. Some students believe there is a similarity between the two. “When you are in that leadership position, you have to deal with stuff like that, you can’t just sweep it under the rug and pretend like it’s not going on,” Kelly said.
play. With a 5-1 conference record, Penn State remains No. 1 in the Leaders Division despite its 17-14 loss to Nebraska on Saturday. Wisconsin leapfrogged OSU in the divisional standings after its 43-13 win against Minnesota on Saturday, which improved its conference record to 4-2. Adams said all the Buckeyes can do now is try to finish the season strong and give themselves something to be proud of. “It’s about as bad as it gets,” he said of the loss. Freshman linebacker Ryan Shazier hasn’t given up hope for an eventual Big Ten title. “We got plenty more years to go,” said Shazier, who recorded seven tackles, one tackle for loss and a forced fumble against the Boilermakers. “We’re just going to do what we can to finish out strong.” A solid finish would require a win against No. 21 Penn State on Saturday. The Nittany Lions will travel to Ohio Stadium without former coach Joe Paterno, whom the Penn State board of trustees fired Thursday. The game is scheduled to kick off at 3:30 p.m. at the ’Shoe. Simon, who has 11 tackles for loss in the Buckeyes’ past five games, said his team is focused solely on its next matchup. “Penn State will be our only focus,” he said. “We just got to take it one game at a time; that’s all we can do.”
“It’s always good to give back, especially when it’s such a drastic cause,” he said. “This is a prevalent issue but not a lot of people organize runs. Maybe it’s because it’s Africa and people don’t know how to give back to something like this.” Noor said that as the president of SSA and as a Somali, she felt it was her job to give back to the people of Somalia. “My focus in life is to help people out,” she said, “I want the people (of Somalia) to know even if you’re suffering, there is someone else in the world that cares about you and thinks about you and wants to help you out.” SSA plans on making Run for Life an annual event, but the focus of the event would change. Instead of SSA deciding on a cause, OSU students will get to vote on the cause and the location of the run, according to Farah. SSA will also be hosting a banquet Nov. 21 at the Performance Hall, located in the Ohio Union. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased by visiting projectrunforlife.org.
Tripi argues that the coaches acted similarly, but PSU’s situation is more severe. “I think they can be comparable, but in my opinion, the PSU situation is far worse and just out of the ordinary,” Tripi said. “(The coaches’) intent was not to hurt anybody but rather to stay out of the situation, which clearly wasn’t the right decision.” Others say that the two scandals themselves are not comparable, but the consequences are similar. “You can’t compare the scandals. We’re going to end up similar situations where the football team is going to break down for a while and you have to rebuild it, but the scandals are completely different,” Cappucci said. “(PSU’s) is a criminal offense, it’s not just a football offense.” The grand jury report against Sandusky was posted on Pennsylvania’s court website on Nov. 4. Paterno’s dismissal came five days later on the Wednesday before the Nittany Lion’s threeweek stretch of tough matches left in its season: Nebraska, OSU and Wisconsin. Some students agree that they were shocked to hear about Paterno’s dismissal, but less surprised about Tressel’s forced resignation. “I think there is a little bit of a difference in us and them in that ours was a build-up over a long period of time and everything you could kind of see coming whereas PSU collapsed in one day,” Cappucci said. Despite views as to whether the scandals can be compared, students believe PSU’s situation provides a new perspective to OSU. “Our students sold some stuff for some money but nobody was hurt,” Kelly said. “No innocent children were molested, you know, that’s really serious.” With replacement coaches Tom Bradley and Luke Fickell, PSU and OSU will set aside the politics and face each other this Saturday. The teams are set to kick off in Ohio Stadium at 3:30 p.m.

Schedule makers sure didn’t do the Ohio State media contingent any favors this weekend. About 12 hours after the OSU men’s basketball team ended its season-opener in Columbus, the Buckeye football team kicked off on the road against Purdue, leaving media members who cover both sports with a sleepless night to make the four-hour trip to West Lafayette, Ind. As a lifelong Columbus resident, I can tell you that trips like this wouldn’t have happened just a few years ago, as most media members would have opted to get a good night of sleep in West Lafayette, but a recent increase in interest in the OSU basketball program has led to an increase in demand for Buckeye basketball coverage. And thanks to the OSU football team’s loss to a then-4-5 Purdue team on Saturday, that demand is only going to grow. Unlike two years ago, when the Buckeyes’ loss to the Boilermakers was just a minor setback in what eventually became a Rose Bowl championship season, this year’s loss in West Lafayette essentially eliminated any hopes that this OSU squad had at making it to a BCS bowl game. But even had the Buckeyes taken care of business against Purdue, it might not have even mattered, as earlier in the week, the OSU football program
was slapped with a “failure to monitor” charge by the NCAA — the second highest offense a program can receive for having committed violations. The charge could potentially result in a bowl ban, among other punishments, from the NCAA. But thankfully for Buckeye fans, a welcomed distraction from the year-long woes of the football program has arrived, as Thad Matta’s OSU basketball team’s season is officially underway. The Buckeyes’ hoops squad is the No. 3-ranked team in the nation and features three players in William Buford, Jared Sullinger and Aaron Craft, who have been named to preseason National Player of the Year watch lists. At the Big
Ten basketball media day in October, OSU was predicted to win its third consecutive conference title. Unlike in past seasons, where the months of November and December were filled with the Buckeyes playing the Miami Universities of the world, this year’s pre-Big Ten schedule will see OSU take on big name and nationally-ranked opponents such as Florida, Duke and Kansas. Matta’s been building an elite program at OSU ever since he took over eight years ago, as he’s filled the Schottenstein Center with all-Americans, Big Ten championship banners and multiple National Player of the Year candidates. But the first two months of basketball season have always belonged to the football team. The only time that the Buckeye football team hasn’t wound up in a BCS bowl game while Matta has been at OSU was in 2004, his first season with the Buckeyes. At that point, the OSU basketball program had already received a postseason ban due to violations committed by Matta’s predecessor, Jim O’Brien. For the first time since Matta’s arrival in Columbus, his team has a brighter outlook than its football counterpart, and it’s not even close. Football-crazed Columbus will

While performing overseas for the armed forces, Michael Gossard, lead singer of alternative rock band ACIDIC, found inspiration. “I would be approached by all these soldiers and they’d tell me stories,” Gossard said. “I’d listen and I decided I needed to write about it.” These stories led Gossard to write some songs for the group’s newest album, “Chronic Satisfaction,” which can be heard when the band is scheduled to perform at O’Sheckys Live Monday at 7 p.m. “Chronic Satisfaction” is ACIDIC’s third album and Gossard said it’s true to its name. “It chronically satisfies people,” he said. “This one captures raw energy. We wanted to convey an emotion. It’s based on personal experience.” Gossard said he has been happy with the turnout at the band’s shows so far. “It’s been one of the highest-attended tours we’ve ever played,” he said. “We’ve been building our fan base and it’s finally getting to the point where we’re able to entertain larger crowds.” Gossard said fans also bring the energy. “We have a ravenous fan base,” he said. “They are the loudest.” Gossard said that crowd includes a group of loyal girls, whom the band calls “goddesses,” which comes to many of their shows. “Those girls put together a $300 care package for us to take on the road, so we took them to dinner,” Gossard said. “OK, it was only McDonald’s, but we’re musicians and we’re cheap, what do you expect?” Recently, ACIDIC landed a place on Music Review’s “12 Bands to Watch in 2012.” Gossard said he was shocked and pleased with the recognition.

Alternative rock band ACIDIC is scheduled to perform at O’Sheckys Live Nov. 14, 2011, at 7 p.m. “I couldn’t believe it when I saw it,” he said. “But being noticed, being put in a magazine that tells people to watch us … I mean we’ve all been up for three days straight. I guess it’s that effort that got us here. If it were easy, everyone would do it.” Other outlets have noticed ACIDIC as well. Cindy Parr of “Shockwave Magazine” said “Chronic Satisfaction” is “is full of high energy tunes with catchy lyrics and solid music.” Lonnie Nemiroff of ShockYa.com also enjoyed the album. She said it made her “giddy inside” because she “truly missed the organic punk sound.” “Chronic Satisfaction” harbors a dance number
as of one its tracks and Gossard said it’s one of the things he’s proud of off this album. “I’ve always wanted to do kind of a poppysounding song like this because it’s different,” he said. Gossard said he is also proud of the recognition “Chronic Satisfaction” has brought the band. “People have started walking up to me at shows and showing me some of my lyrics I’ve wrote that they’ve gotten tattooed,” he said. “I’m like ‘That’s permanent, you sure about that? I’m really not worth it.’” O’Sheckys Live is located at 6240 Busch Blvd.

Taylor Swift (center) performs at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on April 16, 2010. She won the Country Music Award for Entertainer of the Year Nov. 9, 2011.
CMAs ‘Should’ve Said No’ to handing Taylor Swift major award
@LanternAE
ARTS Columnist
We’re on Twitter.
Each year that Taylor Swift walks away with awards for Entertainer of the Year or Female Vocalist of the Year at the Country Music Awards, I start to question the judgment of the voting members of the Country Music Association. So when she again took home the Entertainer of the Year award Wednesday, I was less than thrilled. While she was beaten out by Miranda Lambert in the female vocalist category, it infuriates me that she won Entertainer of the Year. Again. Before you jump down my throat, let me say that I can certainly appreciate that Swift writes her own songs, a rarity in the music industry today. I appreciate that she plays an instrument instead of just standing there. And, I can appreciate her loyalty to her fans. But that’s pretty much where my appreciation for Swift stops, because what I respect about her is exactly what drives me nuts about her. I was a big fan of her self-titled first album, so when I saw less-thanstellar performances from her on
JAMI JURICH jurich.4@osu.edu award show after award show, I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt. But when I saw Swift open for Carrie Underwood in 2008, I realized that her shaky performances had nothing to do with the acoustics in the awards venues or with awards-show nerves. It simply came down to the fact that she is not a good live performer. Underwood made a name for herself by proving she was talented onstage, not just in a studio. Swift, on
the other hand, seems to be off-key each time she performs live, a fault that is almost unforgiveable to me, seeing as she writes her own songs. If you know a note is out of your vocal range, why not leave it out of the song rather than straining to squeak out a pitch that you realistically can’t hit? Even when she does hit the tough notes, it sounds forced. Compare that to the effortless sounds of Underwood, Lambert or Martina McBride, and, to me, there is no contest. This should eliminate Swift from the vocalist category, a group in which I feel she should not even be nominated. But it also should eliminate her from contention in the entertainment category because while Swift certainly puts on a show with elaborate sets and staging, none of that matters if you can’t do the one thing people came to see you do: sing. Swift can’t sing live. I’m not sure which show the voters were watching, but it certainly wasn’t the same performance I’ve seen from Swift because, as likeable as she is,
her inability to sing her own songs on key means she is not a good live entertainer — let alone the best live entertainer in country music. I have my own issues with the content of her songs, which I feel have become almost childish in nature. But one could argue she simply is writing to her audience, which mostly consists of young girls. So I can even cut her some slack for that one. I wouldn’t take issue if the voters handed her awards for songwriting. It’s that she’s winning awards in categories in which she clearly is not the strongest candidate. Just as I wouldn’t argue that Underwood should beat Swift in a songwriting competition, Swift never should beat Underwood in a vocal contest, and Swift certainly should not be given top honors at a music-awards show. Oh, and Taylor, before you go off and write a nasty hit song about me for writing this column, please make sure you pick up a thesaurus and come up with a more creative adjective than “Mean.”

Another sluggish start for OSU defense jessica shambaugh Copy chief shambaugh.14@osu.edu WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — For the Ohio State football team, Saturday’s loss at Ross-Ade Stadium began long before Purdue’s game-winning overtime drive. Going into Saturday’s matchup, OSU knew that if it won out and Penn State suffered two losses, its Big Ten Championship dreams could come true. However, the Boilermakers foiled those plans with a 26-23, win against the Buckeyes in overtime before Penn State fell to Nebraska. Purdue’s offense reaped the benefits of a slow-to-start Buckeyes defense and dozens of missed tackles, which tacked on yardage and moved the chains throughout the game. Failed coverage became the final error in overtime when OSU allowed Purdue fifth-year senior quarterback Robert Marve to connect with sophomore receiver Gary Bush for a 14-yard pass on a third-and-12 conversion. Despite Purdue holding the ball for 30:04 in the game against OSU’s 29:56 of possession, coach Luke Fickell attributed his defense’s performance to players being tired at the end of a drive. “Sometimes later in a longer drive you see the fatigue get to you, and I think that’s what happened there at the end,” Fickell said. The Boilermakers were off to an early 10-0 lead after missed tackles

OSU lost, 26-23. and failed interception attempts, which were frequent for the OSU defensive unit. Sophomore defensive back C.J. Barnett attributed slow starts against both Indiana on Nov. 5, and Purdue to the opposing offenses “coming out fast.” “Just like Indiana did to us last week, they had us running around and a little bit discombobulated,” Barnett said. While Barnett said he’d have to watch the film to see exactly where the breakdown happened in the
Prahalis leads Buckeyes in season opener Tyler Robinson Senior Lantern reporter robinson.1063@osu.edu For the 17th consecutive year, the Ohio State women’s basketball team opened its season with a victory as the Buckeyes knocked off Tennessee State, 78-51, Sunday at the Schottenstein Center. Ten players scored for the Buckeyes, with senior guard Samantha Prahalis and junior guard Tayler Hill leading the way with 17 points each. Freshman forward Kalpana Beach, in her first-ever game for OSU, contributed 10 points and six rebounds. Beach said she found out just before the game that she was starting. “I knew it was going to be a lot different than high school,” Beach said. “So I just was going to go out and play as hard as I could and try not to make too many mistakes.” “(Beach) was nervous before the game,” Hill said with a smile following the victory. OSU surged out to a 48-21 halftime lead, holding TSU to 30 percent shooting in the first half and not allowing any second-chance or fast-break points. The Tigers kept pace with the Buckeyes during the second half with both teams notching 30 points. Coach Jim Foster attributed the drop in production in the second half to inconsistent offensive play. “I thought we started the game very aggressively,” Foster said. “I think it’s difficult to play 12
people and continue with continuity on offense. I think that’s probably what showed in the second half.” With Prahalis as the lone senior to go along with three juniors on the roster, OSU is the youngest team in the Big Ten, according to NCAA data. Foster said the early games in the season are vital in the development of the younger players. “I think one of the things that a young team needs to learn is that when you come in at halftime and sit down you’ve got to continue to be engaged when you go out there for the second half, regardless of what the score is,” Foster said. For the game, the Buckeyes shot 48 percent from the field to go along with a 23-for-29 clip from the free-throw line. OSU held a decisive advantage in free-throw attempts, with TSU only generating nine attempts from the line. OSU suffered a bit of a scare late in the second half when Prahalis, voted co-Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year by the conference’s coaches, was helped off the court by trainers when she fell and cramped up. Prahalis returned to action a few minutes later to finish the contest and assured reporters following the game that she was fine. The Buckeyes take to the Schottenstein Center court again to play Temple at 6 p.m. on Friday. OSU defeated the Owls, 84-75, on the road last season.

overtime coverage, he admitted the defense “had a lot of missed opportunity left on the field.” After senior linebacker Andrew Sweat left the game with an injury, it was up to freshman Ryan Shazier to take his place. Shazier, who finished the game with seven tackles and a forced fumble, said the Boilermakers “started fast,” but that the defense’s problem was rooted in a breakdown of fundamentals. “Our tackling wasn’t that great,” he said. “We’re improving. I think that
we’re just a little bit over-agressive. We go for kill shots a lot. (We’re) not being fundamentally sound and not making tackles.” Sophomore defensive back Christian Bryant agreed. “People miss tackles in every game, but we need to just be more fundamentally sound,” Bryant said. “In practice the coaches preach on tackling and just keeping our heads up, coming in balanced. We do it on some occasions, but there’s just some occasions that we are going 100 mph and it just happens.” Bryant compared the defensive fight to the Oct. 29 game versus Wisconsin, but said this time the defense’s fight didn’t end in favor. He also mentioned a breakdown in communication as a contributing factor. Barnett agreed. “We had guys not paying attention,” Barnett said. “We just got to play better and get focused in.” The Buckeyes’ next chance to “get focused” will be when Penn State visits Ohio Stadium Saturday. Penn State is coming off a loss to Nebraska and is just days removed from the end of Joe Paterno’s coaching career. Paterno was fired by the PSU Board of Trustees fired Thursday after the revelation that former Nittany Lions defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky allegedly sexually abused children. Saturday’s game is scheduled to kick off at 3:30 p.m. at the ’Shoe.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Junior running back Jordan Hall’s two touchdown receptions in Ohio State’s 26-23 overtime loss to Purdue on Saturday were his first two of the season. But it wasn’t supposed to be that way. During spring practice, Hall was being used as a primary target in the passing game, often lining up as a slot receiver or catching passes out of the backfield. Many thought Hall, who ESPN NFL analyst Jon Gruden called OSU’s best player during a spring visit with the team, would be used to help offset what the coaches considered a very young and inexperienced receiving core. Former OSU coach Jim Tressel said that it was known the team was thin at the wide receiver position before the start of spring practice. With injuries, suspensions and a freshman quarterback, OSU has produced only 117.1 yards passing per game, which is ranked 117th nationally out of the 120 FBS teams. Hall had just two receptions for 12 yards heading into Saturday’s game, and it appeared the OSU coaching staff had abandoned its original plan to incorporate him into the passing game. But Hall exploded for three receptions for 58 yards and two touchdowns Saturday against the Boilermakers and seemed an integral part in the OSU game plan. He totaled 150 all-purpose yards and provided a spark for the Buckeyes offense all day. Hall’s first touchdown catch came with 11:42 remaining in the second quarter when OSU trailed,
10-0. OSU hadn’t had much success moving the ball, but on a third-and-10, Hall caught freshman quarterback Braxton Miller’s pass, eluded two Purdue defenders and ran 38 yards into the end zone to put the Buckeyes on the board. It was OSU’s only score of the first half. His second touchdown catch came with just 55 seconds remaining in the game and tied the score at 20. Hall escaped out of the backfield, caught an unbalanced throw from Miller across the field, and fell into the end zone. “I was blocking the edge on the play and I told (Miller) if you scramble I was going to leak out,” Hall said. “He scrambled and I raised my hands and he threw it into that spot.” Redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Jack Mewhort said he wasn’t surprised Hall was able to make a play in a big moment. “I saw Jordan grab it,” Mewhort said. “The kid’s a playmaker. I ran over there and gave him a big hug. It was the best thing ever.” The excitement was short-lived. A blocked extra point kept the game tied and sent the contest into overtime, and a 1-yard touchdown run by Purdue senior quarterback Robert Marve ended the game and sent the Buckeyes home with a loss. Next on OSU’s schedule is Penn State. Kickoff is set for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Ohio Stadium.
