music

Music issue Music unites everyone. No matter what language you speak, where you’re from, who you hang out with, or what you do with your free time; everyone likes music. One of the reasons that everyone can unite around music is that there are so many different variations of music for people to listen to. Between classical, rock, country, alternative, and hiphop everyone can find music they connect to. For this reason we decided

that our December issue would be on music. There are so many different aspects of music that deserve to be showcased. From the different genres of music, to how you listen to music, and what your music taste says about you, all of these things play a part in any music listener’s experience. Music is a force in our world today. Artists have a bigger platform than ever to perform and connect with the individual music fan.

STUDENTS’ OPIN “Music is a universal language that everyone enjoys and relates to. It expresses emotion and brings people together. No matter what mood you're in there is a 100% chance that the song you need to hear in that moment is out there. Saying I love it is an understatement,” said Lexie Vanjohnson, 11 . “I like listening to music while doing homework or playing video games. It helps me focus in on one thing instead of various other distractions,” said Diego Palacios, 12. “I think it is cool how easily people can relate to music. Even when you listen to songs without words, you still understand the feeling it is trying to convey,” said Emma Stemen, 9.

“I mostly listen to K-pop, pop, and rhythm and blues. K-pop is South Korean pop music that is famous all over the world. I li to listen to music because it cheers me up, energizes me and simply just is fun to listen to. Usually I listen to music on the b in my free time and in class,” said Alia Diushebaeva, 10. 16

NIONS ON MUSIC

sa ike d bus,

“Music is sort of like my safe place--away from everything and everyone. When you are listening to music you can just cancel everything out, whatever is going on and just let it be. I love music because it gives the freedom of expression, and it’s beautiful,” said Christine Zou, 10. “I listen to all different kinds of music, it mainly depends on what I'm doing or who I'm with. When I'm with my friends in the car we usually listen to some kind of rap or old music because it's easy to sing along to and gets everyone in an excited and fun mood. On the other hand, when I'm alone or doing homework or in the car in the morning on the way to school, I listen to more alternative music or slower music because it keeps me in a general good, calm mood,” said Makayla Stover, 11.

“Normally I listen to indie, alternative, and rap. But recently I’ve been listening to just anything my friends recommend and I love it. I think that it is important to keep an open mind for all music and listen to what other people like,” said Brooke Baker,12.

MUSIC AND MOOD PERCEIVED VS. FELT EMOTIONS There are two different kinds of emotions related to music: perceived emotions and felt emotions. Perceived emotion is why we can understand music without feeling the emotion in the song. Felt emotions are our actual emotions

People are more likely to interpret a neutral expression as happy or sad based off the music they are listening too.

Brain Food Creativity can be improved by playing music at a moderate noise level. It promotes the ability to process abstract information.

In contrast‌. If the music's too loud creative thinking can be impaired due to the brain being overwhelmed.
