BEFORE I GRADUATE

Before I graduate issue High school is a time of self discovery, and we feel that there are some landmark experiences to try in facilitating that pursuit of discovery. While everyone’s personal list of what they want to do before they graduate is different, some things ought to make it into every high school experience. For these reasons, we decided to dedicate this issue to

making a list of things to do before you graduate. Some of these ideas are momentous events, others are just small adventures. Everyone experience their high school years differently, but there are some events and activities that unite us all because we all ought to do these things before we graduate.

GET A DRIVER’S LICENSE Why:

-Freedom to go wherever you want when you want. -If you need to go somewhere and no one can take you, then you can take yourself. -Drive to school, and can stay after for clubs and activities. -You can hang out and drive your friends. “It is super convenient being able to drive to school every day,” said Megan McMullen, 11.

How to:

1. Go to the bureau with your birth certificate, social security number, and take the test to get your temporary license. 2. Log 50 total hours of driving with ten at night. 3. Take 24 hours of classroom teaching and eight hours of in car sessions with an instructor. 4. Go back to the bureau with your certificate of completion from driver’s education and your temporary license. 5. Take the test. “I am excited to get my driver’s license because it will make transportation easier for extracurricular activities so I can go to and from school without my parents having to drive me,” said London Brinkman, 10.

CAPTURE MEMORIES VSCO VSCO is a photo app for smart phones that is much more personal than other photo sharing platforms like Instagram. There is no concept of likes, comments, or a publicly visible interaction list, which reduces the popularity complex that plagues most social media. “I like VSCO because there are no social rules on it as opposed to Instagram. You’re not looking for likes or comments,” said Allie Brown, 12.

1SE The acronym stands for ‘1 Second Everyday.’ The app is available on Google Play and the App Store, and it lets you record one second of your day everyday, which the app then makes a compilation of, so you can look back on one second of everyday. “It’s very simplistic in the sense that you’re only using one second to describe each day, and yet, such a small thing can trigger huge memories. Less is more,” said Elsa Benson, 12. Design by Hannah Frey Information by Uttkantha Sindhwani

GO TO A SCHOOL PLAY BEFORE I GRADUATE PRESENTS:

SEE A SCHOOL PLAY

“None of these shows are expendable. Everyone should come see each and every one of them,” said Shayna Kling, 10. “I’m in Irena’s Vow and I am so excited to be able to spread the message from this show. It is such a great story and everyone should come see this show,” said Madeleine Weiss, 10.

The options: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is the fall production. It is a musical featuring students in one of the two acting ensemble classes. The show features six awkward spelling bee contestants who attempt to win the bee in a rather comedic manner. The show is Nov. 3, 4, and 5. The Improv Show happens annually. This year, it is Dec. 15 and 16. Improv, or improvisational theater, is basically acting without scripts. The improv show features young actors and actresses being thrown into different games and scenes with no preparation.

10

Design by Sydney Weiss Information by Sydney Weiss

Irena’s Vow will be performed by the other acting ensemble class. The show is a straight play about a Polish girl who hides twelve Jews in the basement of the German commandant. It is a suspenseful and touching story about how one person can contribute to the greater good. The play will be performed Feb. 2,3, and 4.

Finally, the season’s closer will be Big Fish the Musical. It will be April 6, 7, and 8. Big Fish, being the largest production of the year, will likely feature exciting costumes, dance numbers, and sets. The show is about Edward Bloom’s wild stories and his son Will’s attempts to see whether they are true.

VISIT A NATIONAL PARK Glacier National Park Glacier National Park is located mostly in Montana and parts of southern Canada. The park is a true ‘hiker’s paradise’ in the vast wilderness with over 700 miles in trails. The park has one of the largest intact ecosystems which allows visitors to explore the wild meadows, crystal rivers, 400-foot waterfalls, breathtaking rock faces and mountain peaks by road, trail, or stream. Yosemite National Park Yosemite contains over 10,000 years of history ever since the American Indians laid their foundation. The national park is in California and is surrounded with endless wilderness, sheer cliffs, and amazing restfulness to spike a spirit of the true connection with nature.

“I think national parks are of high importance in the country. Although I have not had much time in national parks, I think they are very valuable in allowing people to see nature and its wildlife. My family and I have been planning to visit a national park sometime soon and I think it will be so much fun to experience the natural scenery! I hope to travel to as many national parks as possible when I am older,” said Michelle Kerr, 10.

Yellowstone National Park Yellowstone is one of the largest and probably the most famous park in the United States. Yellowstone National Park is in Wyoming and was the very first official national park in the United States and is the home to the super volcano and acquires a total of about 500 geysers and 10,000 different thermal features.

Acadia National Park Along the rugged coast of Maine, the park is home to many plants, animals, and the tallest mountain on the US Atlantic coast, Cadillac Mountain. Visitors each year come to visit and hike granite peaks, bike historic carriage roads, and/or to relax and enjoy the outstanding scenery.

“A few years ago I visited the Grand Canyon National Park, and I was forever amazed. The park not only contained gorgeous sites, but also let visitors see how the native people around that region live. The overall experience encompassed many wonderful aspects of history, and it gave me a sense of why parks are so important in society,” said Shayna Kling, 10.

HOW TO:

STAY UP A

SLEEP AHEAD OF TIME Try to get more sleep the night before you plan to stay up all night. Take a nap in the afternoon to help power through the night.

SET ALARMS

By setting alarms to go off throughout the night this could stop you from falling asleep unexpectedly. An alarm every half hour will ensure that you stay up.

DRINK WATER AND COFFEE Coffee will give you a caffeine burst but water will help every part of your body feel better. 14

Make a creative title “To me, the title of the playlist is very important. It has to be a good overall picture of what kind of songs are in the playlist. For example, if your playlist is filled withYun, studying -Gabby 11 songs you could name it ‘peaceful descent to hell’ because no one likes to study, but the songs are calming,” said Gabby Yun, 11.

WEAR BOLD CLOTHING The idea of dressing bold first raises the question of how you define bold. The word is very subjective in the sense that what is bold and courageous to me, might be an everyday story for someone else. A simpler term would be to dress out of your comfort zone. It is not an unknown fact that the way you dress is the ultimate expression of the self.

“I would define dressing bold as wearing anything others might perceive as out of the ordinary. I do think I dress bold usually; I have my own style that’s kind of different,” said Abigail Roof, 12.

SOME BOLD IDEAS: Bright colors, or different colors than you usually wear. Go bold with accessories. Try unique pieces of jewelery or hair accessories. Try to layer a few staples to transform them into a bold choice. Experiment with rips, tears, and folds. CREATE A RESUME What is a resume: Resumes are meant to be summaries of your skills and achievements. This is for potential employers or admissions officers to get a sense of who you are and what you have done.

What you need a resume for: Applying for jobs, internships, and some summer programs Applying to college

“I first made a resume when I was 14 because I applied for my first job then. It went well. I asked my mom and dad for a lot of help, but once I got the gist of it, it was pretty easy. I did have trouble recalling all the activities that I wanted to put on it, so that’s why now, I keep a record of all my activities and such,” said Jasmine Male, 11. http://www.myfuture.com/careers/articles-advice/creating-your-resume

How to set one up: Naviance: In Naviance, if you just add a description of your activity/award the website will organize it for you. Ask upperclassmen, siblings, or parents for templates and detail help, or consult the Internet.
