MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER As I look back on the first half of the summer and ahead to the second, I am excited about the direction of the club. We have seen growth in many areas, including membership. It is rewarding to see so much interest in The Ledges with the number of people who want to be members. Our Director of Membership Terry Wilbanks is doing an excellent job recruiting new members and the hard work of our staff is paying off in the satisfaction and retention of existing members. Executive Chef Phillip Collier rolled out his new summer menu on July 5 and it has been well received. I appreciate our members using the club and telling others about the high quality of food and service. Chef and Clubhouse Manager Jon Zedonek have put together outstanding events over the next couple of months. From wine dinners and cooking classes to regular dinner service and live music on the terrace, we have tried to provide something for each of you to enjoy. New summer menu items.
Golf Digest recently released their rankings of golf courses and I am proud to say that The Ledges was rated the number three course in the state of Alabama. It is a great honor to be so highly ranked and it's a testament to the hard work that Director of Agronomy Jim Howell and his staff put in everyday. Beyond the day-to-day operations of maintaining the golf course, Jim and his team have taken on many additional projects. Over the past two years, they have built a three green practice facility from a waste land, installed a new irrigation control system that gives us greater control of our water usage, and they have removed over five acres of Bermuda grass that had encroached into our fairways and replaced it with Zoysia sod. It is staggering to look at the amount of work these guys get accomplished each week. I am thankful for Jim Howell and the quality crew that he has assembled. Director of Golf Rob Clark and his team are working hard preparing for the Member Member tournament to be held August 12 and 13. We have a great weekend of golf planned and hope you have signed up to be part of this event. The Ledges Member Guest tournament, The Cliffhanger, was a resounding success. Congratulations to the winners Nick Sharp and his guest Geoff Harriman. Thank you to all who participated in the event and we look forward to seeing each of you next year. Congratulations to Michaela Morard for winning the AGA State Junior Girls Tournament, earning medalist honors at the US Girls Junior Qualifier and receiving an exemption to the PGA Junior Championship. Finally, I will leave you with an impressive statistic: from June 2, 2017 to July 2, 2017 our members have recorded a remarkable seven hole in ones. Congratulations to A.J. Albert (#5), Bob Burgoon (#5), Tom Pfitzer (#11), George Twitty (#3), Jerry Taylor (#3), Trent Trousdale (#9) and Richard Clay (#3). Enjoy your summer. Jim Ausley

A LETTER FROM DIRECTOR OF GOLF ROB CLARK This golf season is flying by and before too long we will start to talk about football and cooler weather. The year has been filled with some great golf and a lot of participation from much of the membership. I have had many members notice the amount of junior golfers that they've seen on the course. This is not only very exciting, but very vital to our membership and growing the game. Many of our juniors have had successful summers from Michela Morard who won Girl's State Junior to Will Klecka, Charles Warren and Teagan Miller who participated in the Future Masters tournament. Our junior program continues to produce up and coming golfers. With strong participation in all categories and several new golfers, I'd like to remind members of some basic golf etiquette. Repairing ball marks and raking bunkers is something we all hope that members take seriously. This is one small way to help everyone play the course the way it was meant to be played. Our golf course is such a great asset and we need to make sure we all do our part to keep it in great condition. Pace of play is another topic that is important to recognize when on the course. No matter the number of golfers in each group, if there is space in front of you and the group behind you is waiting, the proper etiquette is to let them play through. This makes for a better golf experience for all players. Thank you to adhering to the new golf cart policy and working with us to make sure our course stays in the best possible shape. Our new policy will allow for better service for our members and a better product on the course. It was nice to be recognized as the number 3 golf course in Alabama by Golf Digest. Our entire staff takes pride in this recognition and we hope you will help us continue to move even higher. Aron Walker, our summer intern will be leaving us mid-August after Member Member. I want to personally thank him for the outstanding job that he has done and wish him well during his next three years of the PGM program. Maybe one day we will see Aron back on a permanent basis. He is definitely one who meets the high standards to work at our great club. Aron, good luck in the years to come and know that your Ledges family is rooting for you.

A NOTE FROM SUMMER GOLF INTERN ARON WALKER I have enjoyed my experience as a golf intern at The Ledges. I could not have asked for better coworkers or members who have been by my side truly making this a valuable summer. During my internship, I've learned several things that will make me successful in the future. A majority of my time has been spent working with juniors and showing them the fun of the game. Working the Member Guest Cliffhanger Golf Tournament was a great opportunity as I learned everything from getting scorecards ready, staging carts with place cards and even helping with the awards at the end. I am glad to say that I have not been stuck in the Pro-Shop and have had the opportunity to play several courses and caddie for Rob

Another great opportunity that I've had was to run an Alabama Northwest

Florida junior event. It was a great experience and I am grateful that Jordan gave me that opportunity. My final project will be running the employee outing from start to finish. I can say that I am very excited for that! Overall, this internship experience has been everything I wanted and then some. I am thankful to have had Rob as a mentor, because everything I have learned is because of him. Usually first year interns get stuck in the cart barn, but Rob wanted to prepare me for my internships ahead and I can confidently say that I am prepared. Thank you, Rob for believing in me and teaching me so much. I will miss The Ledges when it comes time for me to go back to school, but I will be back in the future to visit.

COURSE update
From Director of Agronomy Jim Howell
I certainly hope everyone has enjoyed the golf course this summer and the conditioning that our team works hard on everyday for our members and guests. The clubhouse grounds and aesthetics have improved dramatically with the hiring of Horticulturist Sloan Finnerty this spring. His main focus has been improving color schemes around the club, pool, practice green areas and also adding additional colors to the golf course. With his expertise, these areas will improve each season. Here are the scheduled agronomy programs for the month of August: 1. Aerifcation of the greens with small 1/4 inch hollow tines to remove cores. We have used the smaller tines in the summer to reduce any stress due to high temperatures. Topdressing will follow to fill in the holes with the application of amendments to promote healing. 2. Aerification of fairways with 1 inch solid tines. This program will take 1-2 weeks depending on weather and seldom disrupts playability. 3. Number 4 fairway will be used as a nursery to sod Zoysia where we have removed Bermuda. TiffTuff Bermuda will be installed when we reach the exact footage for 1 load of sod.
This fall we've scheduled some possible bunker renovations for 1, 2 and 7 greenside bunkers. Once these green sites are completed, it will leave us with holes 4, 6, 14, 15, 17 and 18 to complete the Better Billy Bunker system. The renovation and drainage system has drastically improved our bunkers and has reduced labor. Enjoy the rest of your summer. Jim Howell
GOLF ETIQUETTE, SLOW PLAY AND DRESS CODE ZACH DAWSON, REGISTERED PGA APPRENTICE
Etiquette in the game of golf is very important. Respecting the course is important to all of us at The Ledges. As a reminder to all of our members, we would like to explain some of the unwritten rules of golf. Fixing your ball marks, repairing your divots and following the new golf cart policy are all important in making The Ledges a better club. It is important to remember that if we fix our ball marks correctly, our greens will be in the best shape possible. Our greens will roll and look better if everyone fixes their ball marks as well as other ones that have gone unfixed. Repairing divots with the divot mix (sand and seed mix on the carts) or replacing the divot will make our fairways and through the green heal correctly. Slow play is something that everyone has to deal with. As a reminder, if there is a group behind you and you have a hole or two ahead of you, please let the faster group play through. It will make everyone's experience more enjoyable. If there is an issue and you feel uncomfortable addressing it, please let the ProShop know so we can help address the issue. We will be making our best effort to ride the course three times a day to see how rounds are going. Finally, the dress code. It is important that everyone who is at the club, member or guest, is wearing a tucked in collared shirt. Please have appropriate pants or shorts on as well. Shorts do not need to be shorter than your arm length on your side. Thank you for supporting the club and helping keep The Ledges the top 3 course in the state. By following our policies and keeping the course in the best condition possible, we will have the chance to be even greater.
JUNIOR GOLF UPDATE, JORDAN DEBONIS PGA I have had an awesome time with all of the juniors this year. This has been one of the best seasons that I have worked in the industry. I've learned a lot as I've had the opportunity to oversee the junior program and I am looking forward to implementing many new techniques in the coming months. As a reminder, beginning August 8 we will be switching back to our original LJGC schedule. The schedule will be as follows: Blue Group: Tuesday, 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. White Group: Wednesday, 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. Red Group: Thursday, 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. Our Parent Child events have grown in popularity and I enjoy seeing great turn outs for these events. There isn't anything better than introducing a junior golfer to a fun and enjoyable environment with family and friends. We will continue to rotate formats and make these events as fun as possible for all abilities. If you have any suggestions on different formats, please let me know. As the Director of the Alabama Northwest Florida Junior Tour, I have seen a few of our member's kids enjoy the introductory laid back atmosphere of the tournaments. These tournaments help build confidence and are a great stepping stone as the youth begins to play in larger tournaments. I encourage all of our juniors between the ages of 10 and 18 to play in these events. I look forward to having the opportunity to grow this junior tour for Northwest Alabama. The PGA Junior League is another great opportunity especially because it is open to all juniors between the ages of 7 and 13, regardless of ability. We have had a great season with the juniors, but I would like to see the PGA Junior League team grow into multiple teams. This is such a great team environment for the kids. I try to pair the older more experienced golfers with a few beginners so that they can help develop the younger golfer's game. As the junior programs continue to grow and attract new players, we are looking to the more experienced golfers to help mentor the younger players as they are just getting introduced to the game. From dress code to basic rules, we'd like to see the veteran golfers show them how to have fun while playing golf!
MARTINIS AND MANUSCRIPTS BOOK CLUB WRITTEN BY BOB WESTERFELDT Once again, our Martinis and Manuscripts book club will start the new 2017 – 2018 season of reading, enjoying, and reviewing books that our members have chosen which are interesting, exciting, educational, or sometimes all of these. Our first meeting of this season will be Thursday, September 21, after a couple months summer break. Your humble correspondent has a number of books still piled up and plans on gradually lowering the stack. So far completed is R. Allen Chappell’s Wolves of Winter, his 6th of the Navajo Nation Mysteries series. And still waiting anxiously to be read is Michael Crichton’s long misplaced novel Dragon Teeth, whose reviews remind me of our March 2011 selection of Homer Hickam’s novel The Dinosaur Hunter. Of course there are newer books to consider such as Grisham’s new novel Camino Island about rare manuscript theft and black marketing. Historians might want to consider Bill O’Reilly Legends and Lies: The Civil War by David Fisher, with some unique coverage of that terrible conflict. With all of these great books, what we really need is more time to relax and read! Since this has been a long, hot summer, and great for reading, everyone should have a good book they would like to share with the other book club members. So, for our September 21st meeting, we will have one of our interesting BYOB (Bring Your Own Book) sessions where all attendees have the opportunity for a short discussion on their favorite book, maybe one they completed over the summer break. Some of these might even be the basis for a more detailed presentation for one of our monthly meetings. This looks like it will be another great book year, with good books, good friends, and fun meetings. This is a great time for anyone interested in joining our book club to come and participate, or even to just meet other book lovers and to see what we do. We hope to see you there! If you are interested in joining the Martinis and Manuscripts book club please contact Bob Westerfeldt at 256-534-1269 or rwesterfeldt1@comcast.net.
