Since joining The Ledges, Phillip has been busy building an impressive culinary team, learning the likes and dislikes of our members and creating some outstanding entrĂŠes. In July, Chef Phillip introduced new lunch and dinner menus featuring excellently prepared dishes with a southern flair. The Ledges Short Game Practice Area officially opened in June and it has been very well received. It has been great seeing so many members using it to improve their game. This was made possible by Director of Golf Rob Clark, The Ledges members who donated, Director of Agronomy Jim Howell, and Ledges owners Dr. Bill Salter and Steve Denney. I would like to take a moment and extend my
class facility. Through moving dirt, installing drainage and irrigation, building and seeding greens, laying sod, creating bunkers, planting flowers, our Short Game Practice Area is a beautiful place for golfers to practice. In addition, the fact that this work was done in-house saved us tens of thousands of dollars. Thank you to the owners, Dr. Bill Salter and Mr. Steve Denney, for all you've done to make this happen. From the donation of the land and contribution of the funds, to the trust placed on our management team to execute this dream. Speaking on behalf of The Ledges' staff, we share your desire in creating the best club, golf course and amenities for the members enjoyment. Warmest Regards,
gratitude to each of them for their role in bringing this member amenity from a dream to a reality:

On a sad, but grateful note, it is that time of the year where we have to say goodbye to our intern Megan Crews. In early August, Megan will be returning to school at Florida Gulf Coast University. Megan has been a tremendous help to us in all aspects of the golf operation. I hope that she will be going back to school with a lot of knowledge of how the golf operation functions. If you have a chance, visit her in the Pro-Shop to wish her well and to say goodbye. I would like to personally

This season marks the third year of the PGA Junior League at The Ledges. As a whole, the PGA Junior League program has shown unbelievable growth in its short existence. It began just four years ago with a few teams, and now it is getting ready to host a National Championship with coverage on The Golf Channel! This year, the program has shown record growth with a remarkable number of 600 All-Star teams and 35,000 participants in the entire league. In the past, The Ledges and Huntsville's All-Star teams have had great success, and this year should be no different. Last year, The Ledges' team made its

the city of Huntsville has well over 100 juniors. The standing as of July 1 put The Ledges playing 5 matches with a record of 3-1-1 with a loss to Burningtree and in a tight second place, edging out Hampton Cove who was in third place. With another 4 matches remaining, The Ledges will have a chance for redemption against Burningtree to finish first place for the year. G LF TIP FROM TOMES
Time is something that we can all relate to. We either want more of it, wish it would pass faster, wish it would pass slower, or try to do more in short spans of it. Sometimes we try all of those things in the same day. Regardless, we should try to make the most of it. This is especially true when it comes to golf. Managing your time while practicing or playing can lead to lower scores and a greater level of enjoyment. Let's begin with practicing. When we practice, most of us just take full swing after full swing. Sure it's fun to feel the ball smash on the club face and go speeding towards the target, at least we hope it does, but the reality is that the majority of stokes lost are inside one hundred yards. This includes on and around the green. By knowing that tiny piece of information, we can tailor our practice to help us score better and faster. Try spending fifty percent of your practice time near the green. Our Short Game Practice Area is perfect for this part of your practice. Use the putting drills we talked about in the June/July issue of Cliff Notes, or come up with some of your own. Chip to different flags hitting no more than ten balls from each spot. Challenge yourself to make each putt or chip no more than a grip length away from each hole. Then move over to the tee and work on full shots. Remember not to ever end on a bad shot. Always end on a good note. Now, let's talk about how we can be more efficient on the course. When it's your turn, being ready to hit your shot is crucial to playing in a timely manner. Do a quick check before you tee off. Ask yourself, do I have a couple of tees in my pocket? A glove? Golf ball? This may sound silly, but we've all gotten out of the cart without one of those. Measure your shot and select your club while waiting on the others to hit. This is especially important on the green, where most of the time can be made up. Streamlining your actions in between shots allows you more time to focus on the shot, and less time bogging yourself down with excess critical thinking about your swing. Remember this, pick a club, line it up, and hit it. Evaluate after the shot. All of us have busy lives and still want to be able to enjoy the activities that we love. I hope these suggestions will help you get the most out of your practice and time on the course. I look forward to seeing you around the club!

Martinis & Manuscripts a note from Bob Westerfeldt Martinis and Manuscripts will be taking a break during the month of August giving everyone time for summer activities - trips, family visits, and just some plain relaxation. Summer also provides a good reading time and we hope that you've taken advantage. Your humble corespondent has a number of books stacked up and is gradually lowering the stack. Still to be read is Richard Adams' (West Point graduate of 1967) book The Parting, a Story of West Point on the Eve of the Civil War, a historical novel about the West Point Class of 1861, whose members had to make the decision - stay at the Point and remain with the Union or leave their friends to join the Confederacy. And finished last month was Bill O'Reilly's Legends and Lies - The Patriots written by David Fisher, a companion to the Sunday evening television series by the same name. Reading one and watching the other really gets one invested in our revolutionary history. Now, there is probably that one book that really grabbed your attention, and on September 15, you will have an excellent opportunity to tell us about it at one of our wild BYOB (Bring your Own Book) sessions. For anyone who has not participated, the rules are simple - bring a book, one that you like or even dislike (consider it a chance to get a mental relief by venting), or a book that you've for any other reason feel that the other members might be interested in hearing about.
