INSIDE THE CLUBHOUSE: HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS The holiday season is fast approaching and your club has been busy preparing activities for you and your family to enjoy. I am very excited to experience my first holiday season at The Ledges and I know that our team members will do everything possible to fill the season with wonderful memories and holiday cheer. Santa will visit The Ledges on the eleventh and eighteenth of December for our annual Santa Brunches. Executive Chef Phillip Collier and his team will prepare an elaborate brunch buffet which can be enjoyed while listening to Christmas carols. Due to the extra holiday events going on at your club, we will be postponing all Tuesday Family Night Buffets until January. In lieu of the buffet, we will be offering a limited dinner menu and our Burger and Pint Night which includes a Ledges burger and one draft beer for just $10.95. We will be ushering in 2017 with a variety of events which will be sure to please everyone. Many great activities are planned in January including the return of Trivia Night, a Wine Tasting, another spectacular Wine Dinner, BINGO, Lobster Night and much more. The clubhouse team and I look forward to seeing you and your family enjoying everything The Ledges has to offer during the holiday season. If there is anything that we can do to make the holidays more magical, please let us assist you. I want to take this occasion to wish each and everyone of you and your families a Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year.

DE LA CUISINE BY CHEF PHILLIP COLLIER Fall was a very busy season at The Ledges. I would like to thank everyone who attended Dinner on the Greens for making it such a great success. We had terrific participation and a good time was had by all in attendance. I continue to enjoy getting to know the membership and hearing the great feedback from everyone. As you know, our menu is ever-changing as the seasons change and as we try to accommodate our members. If there is anything in particular you are looking for, please do not hesitate to ask. Do not forget to take the time during this busy holiday season to relax at one of our many upcoming events. On December 11 and 18, we will be having two extra special brunches with Santa and Christmas carolers. On New Year's Eve we will offer a grand four-course prefixed menu with a wine pairing option. The Ledges' first Lobster Night will take place on Friday, January 13 with pound and a half lobsters and all of the trimmings. Orders for lobsters need to be submitted to the club no later than January 5. Last but not least will be the spectacular Robert Burns Night on January 26 showcasing all of your favorite classic Scottish dishes. Make reservations early for each of these events. I look forward to seeing you at the club. Phillip Collier Executive Chef

INSIDE THE
PRO-SHOP with Katie Mitchell As the golf season comes to a close, the Pro-Shop is far from being finished with the year. Two of my favorite events are on the horizon, the first being our annual Pro-Shop Christmas sale where we fill the golf shop with balloons that contain discounts from 20% to 100% off merchandise. This is always a great time to fellowship with other members while recapping the season over drinks and hors d'oeuvres. Another favorite event of mine is the PGA Merchandise Show which takes place in Orlando, Florida during the month of January. This is where we find the latest in golf equipment, apparel, shoes, technology and more. I am always excited to see what we can find and bring back into the shop for the new season. I go to the show with a list of everyone's likes, sizes and interests so that I can bring back what we all appreciate in addition to new merchandise to keep us in the forefront of golf. As you complete your holiday shopping, don't forget to check out our virtual Pro-Shop by visiting our website or theledges.vanguardproshop.com. I look forward to assisting you in the Pro-Shop!

the winter. One of the best ways to prevent injuries during the cold weather is to incorporate stretching into your routine. Stretching the "golf muscles" in the body can decrease injury and allow the muscles to warm up properly. As for our swings, smaller and more efficient practice routines can be used to build tempo and timing before a round. Practicing is not always about hitting balls, it is about practicing with intent. Having
a target, rating each shot and evaluating your practice time can help decrease the need for longer practice sessions during the colder months. Short game practice routines can help us lower our scores in the shortest time possible. We should have more emphasis in a scoring opportunity when we practice our short game and putting rather than the longer shots. Take into consideration that a 250 yard drive and a missed 3 foot putt carry the same weight of one stroke. Having a variety of shots on the golf course can tremendously increase confidence with our short game. Most people will carry 3-4 wedges in their bag, but will have 1 to 2 shots that they can execute with each club. As golfers, we have to evaluate the playing conditions from day to day and hole to hole to execute opportunities on the golf course. Club face manipulation with our short game can help provide more efficient ways to score in various situations from 60 yards and closer. As an example, a chip shot does not always have to be played with a closed to square club face. Open the face up and practice a different shot so that the variety in shorts around the green increases. Work on low and high shots with different club face angles. Experiment with different techniques. All in all the true goal is to find a variety of shots to get the ball closer to the hole. Shorter putts equals better scores.

On behalf of the Agronomy team, we hope all members and guests have enjoyed this year's golf season and course conditioning. We made several changes to our programs which I believe enhanced many areas on the golf course. The greens improved dramatically with the addition of the Dry-Ject application and several applications of wetting agents and amendments. The greens remained firm and consistent with a reduced amount of stress and disease pressure even through a very hot summer. We have multiple projects to continue as we move into the winter months and prep for 2017: 1. Removal of Bermuda contamination in the fairways. Last year we worked on Holes # 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17. This year our staff has already started on #6 fairway and will continue the process to # 7, 8, 10, 18 fairways. 2. Conversion from Zoysia to Tif-Tuff Bermuda on # 4 fairway. After much discussion, we decided to convert this fairway to an improved variety of Bermuda which has tested very well in compacted and poor soils. Over the years we have improved the drainage and playability of the turf stand, however the overall quality was lacking. This change will allow our members to access the fairway with carts more often plus the surface will be improved and consistent. We are in the process of removing decent zoysia on # 4 and installing Tif-Tuff Bermuda in the contaminated areas. 3. Addition of Fescue around tees and greens. Many of you have probably noticed the addition of fescue around the tees and greens in out of play areas. This will not only reduce maintenance in these areas, but will provide contrast to our already scenic golf course. This program was implemented in 2014 and will continue for the next several seasons. 4. Bunker renovation. We are still in the process of improving our bunker drainage and playability by installing the Better Billy bunker system. Although this is a costly project, the bunker drainage has improved which has resulted in less erosion, no silt contamination and less labor. Holes # 4 and 6 greenside bunkers will receive attention this year.
Have a wonderful holiday season! Jim Howell Director of Agronomy

Free for Vintner's Club Members

The Martinis and Manuscripts Book Club has meetings that bookend the Christmas and New Years holiday. This period provides excellent opportunities to read a book or two and to also enjoy any gift books from Christmas - and maybe you have a few good ones! Our December 15 book, Ruth Ware's The Woman in Cabin 10, discussed by Richard Miller, brings us a classic paranoid woman story with a modern twist in this tense, claustrophobic mystery...The cast of characters, their conversations and the luxurious but confining setting all echo classic Agatha Christine; in fact, the structure of the mystery itself is an old one: a woman insists murder has occurred, everyone else says she's crazy. But with a flawed but likable heroine, and a fast moving pilot, it makes for a stylish thriller. Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall and Lo witnesses what she can only describe as a dark and terrifying nightmare: a woman being thrown overboard. The problem? All passengers remain accounted for - and so, the ship sails on as if nothing has happened, despite Lo's desperate attempts to convey that something or someone has gone terribly, terribly wrong. Our January 19 book, Killing the Rising Sun takes readers to the bloody tropical-island battlefields of Peleliu and Iwo Jima and to the embattled Philippines, where American soldiers face an opponent who will go to any length to avoid defeat and where General Douglas MacArthur will make a triumphant return and then plot a full-scale invasion of Japan. If you are old enough you can relive it, and if not you should learn about it. Be there! If you are a Ledges member interested in joining the Martinis and Manuscripts book club, please contact Bob Westerfeldt at 256-534-1269 or rwesterfeldt1@comcast.net.
