INSIDE THE CLUBHOUSE WITH JON ZEDONEK During this new season, your club is staying very active with plenty of fun events and activities for all ages. If you haven't joined us for a game of Bingo or Trivia, I encourage you to come and see how fun the two games can be. Bingo is open for the entire family and will take place on Tuesday, February 21 and Tuesday, March 21 during our Tuesday Family Night Buffets. Great prizes are given out and it is the perfect opportunity to make memories with your family. Trivia is turning out to be very popular for members who are 18 and older. Whether you form your own team or join an existing team, this is a great opportunity to mingle with other members, so make sure to join us on Saturday, February 25 and Saturday, March 11. Remember that childcare is available every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening, but you must make reservations. We will continue our monthly wine tastings on Friday, February 17 and Thursday, March 30. All members are invited to come and sample some wonderful bottles of wine while getting exposed to new varieties and regions. Vintner's Club members receive complimentary admittance to wine tastings and the price is just $20 for all other members. Speaking of wine, I am happy to announce that we will be having a Bordeaux Wine Dinner on March 18. Executive Chef Phillip Collier has a beautiful menu planned to pair with these truly remarkable wines. Make reservations early
because this dinner is sure to fill up. This next event will be one of the highlights of the year. I am happy to announce the arrival of the great entertainer Denny Corby on Saturday, February 11. Dubbed as one of the top magicians and entertainers in the country, Denny's presentation of magic and comedy has been performed all over the world. By avoiding rabbit-in-a-hat style props, Denny elevates the concept of illusion and magic to uniquely entertaining new heights. Denny’s high-energy show will keep you laughing and engaged and has stunned even the most skeptical of viewers. This event will be the talk of the club for months to come. Make reservations now to enjoy dinner and a show for just $65++. Limited seats are available and although the show does not have "adult" content, it is recommended for ages 16 and up. It has been a great honor and privilege to be your Clubhouse Manager for this past year and I look forward to making more memories and cultivating more relationships for many years to come. If myself or my team can help you in any capacity, please do not hesitate to ask.

DE LA CUISINE BY EXECUTIVE CHEF PHILLIP COLLIER I would like to personally thank each of you for your support over the holiday season. The culinary team and I have made vast improvements and we are looking forward to a busy 2017 filled with many exciting events. We will be revising the dinner menu at the beginning of February by adding a variety of seasonal soon-to-be favorites while keeping several of The Ledges classic dishes. I encourage you to try something new next time you're dining at the club. I am looking forward to many upcoming events in February such as the Super Bowl party, our Valentine's Day dinner, Sweetheart's Brunch and the Fat Tuesday Cajun Buffet. March will bring a Wine Dinner and we will be celebrating Saint Patrick's Day with all-day Irish specials. continued support of the golf operation. Katie Mitchell and I just returned from the PGA Merchandise Show and we are excited to be bringing a lot of new items to the ProShop. We'll also be adding new programs to our golf operation in 2017. In it will be events and activities designed for all levels of players. One new event which we are excited to add to our schedule for 2017 is The Ledges Putting Championship. We want to know who is the best putter at the club. The event will be on Saturday, March 18, at 9:30 a.m., and held on the course where we will set the pins on each hole and set tee markers on each green. It's going to be a lot of fun so get your friends together and let's see who will be declared our 2017 Club Putting Champion! With the addition of the new Short Game Practice Area, we have been able to add several short game clinic opportunities for all levels of players. We are really excited about this new aspect of our golf operation. We've seen a lot of participation at our Short Game Practice Area and we look forward to helping you improve this aspect of your game. Stay tuned for the 2017 schedule which will include dates and times for all of our events. We hope that you will participate in several of these upcoming learning
Even if you never play, this will be a good opportunity to get exposed to how fun golf can be when you're amongst your friends. The addition of our Trackman has allowed us to improve our ability to teach, fit for clubs and practice more efficiently. Those who are interested in improving their game in 2017 should consider becoming a Trackman member. The cost is $500 for the year which allows you unlimited use of the Trackman for practice and club testing as well as use of the Combine feature where you can work on your distances with each club. The fee also includes one hour sessions with one of our professionals who will show you the features and how to read and understand the data. If you're interested, please reach out to the golf professionals and we will get you set up. During the entire month of February we will hold a club repair sale where all grips and repairs will be discounted 15%. This will be a perfect time to get your clubs ready for the season. Save the date for our Annual Demo Day taking place Sunday, March 19, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., at the Driving Range. This is always a popular event and a great way to see all the new equipment for 2017. We have

Something that I find very helpful is keeping a club lying around the house with which I can check my grip. There is nothing more uncomfortable than getting on the golf course with a grip that doesn't feel right. So, in your free time while sitting on the couch, pick up the club and check your grip periodically during the

ON THE COURSE WITH ADAM LAIRD As we've entered 2017, I would like to thank all of the members who have been so kind and welcoming throughout my time at The Ledges thus far. My wife, daughter and myself have found Huntsville to be our new home and we are thrilled with the decision to relocate here. I am personally looking forward to building new and stronger relationships as we move forward into the year with our members and guests. Please do not hesitate to stop by and say "hello" whenever you are around the Golf Shop. We are always here to help you in any way that we can. With golf season just around the corner, you may find yourself wondering, "How can I improve my golf game in 2017?" The best advise that I can give is to pick an area of your golf game and make the decision to dedicate more time and practice to getting better throughout

Many golfers can improve their golf games with practicing the mental side of the sport. Course management is a huge contributor to making effective golf swings without fear while on the golf course. For a player to be comfortable in executing a golf shot under a pressure situation, having an effective course management option can build confidence in the golf shot. A confident stroke of the shot usually results in a well-executed golf shot. Whichever area you decide to improve on in 2017, remember to stay dedicated to getting better. The extra hours spent practicing with the correct intentions will pay off with lower scores.

D I R E CTO R O F AGRO N O M Y J IM H OW E LL
Now that the 2016 golf season is behind us, we can concentrate on the 2017 season and the improvements that the grounds crew will accomplish. We will continue the removal of Bermuda in the fairways beginning on holes 10 and 18, then we will continue to holes 7 and 8. We plan to have this program finished by May so that the sod may grow in and the fairways become playable. As you know, last year was hot and dry with the lack of rainfall. Normally we average 60 inches of rain each season, however, last year's rain totals were very low at 40 inches. This was very stressful on an aging irrigation and communication system which brought to our attention the need to replace and upgrade the current platform. I began discussions in June with Toro on our need to improve, monitor and control all water applied to the course more accurately. I am very excited to announce that we will be installing Toro's new smart system called Lynx this year and it will be fully operational by March. Currently, we have over 2,000 irrigation heads on the golf course which will be controlled separately by the new system. This will allow us to control the water applied to the turf accurately and more efficiently. The system will measure rainfall at each satellite and will send measurements to the hard drive which will allow us to turn off the water and reduce water waste. We'll also be reducing the amount of annual repairs and we will be improving protection against lightening and eliminate all communication wire and much more. To stay updated on what our Agronomy team is working on, I would like for you to check out our Ledges Agronomy page at www.ledgesagronomy.wordpress.com. You can also follow me on Twitter under the handle howell1jim where I post about our current projects and programs.

Strategic Philanthropy:
Helping Philanthropists understand how non-traditional gifts can maximize tax efficiency and create a long-term impact on charities
with Jay T. Dryden
Wednesday, March 22, 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. $15.00 (tax and tip included) Jay Dryden is a Certified Financial PlannerŽ who has been in business for over 15 years and has built a thriving wealth management practice based on a detailed financial planning process. Three years ago he prayerfully made the decision that it would be best for his clients if he and his partner Kelly Moise made the move to an independent firm, and so they started Vector Wealth Strategies affiliated with Commonwealth Financial Network. His firm now manages over $165M in investments for around 200 families. Jay also serves on the Boards of Trustees for FreedHardeman University and the Alabama/Mississippi Chapter of the National MS Society. Jay’s main philanthropic passion is educating his community about philanthropic financial planning. For several years, he has worked with the Association for Fundraising Professionals to educate local development directors on incorporating planned giving into their fundraising efforts, and he serves as a pro-bono planned giving advisor for many small non-profits. He also uses his practice to create awareness for local charities and to promote philanthropy among his clients. Besides annual event sponsorships for many local charities, he established the Vector Wealth Strategies Community Impact Fund to provide a charitable grant-making vehicle for his firm. In addition to his corporate giving fund, Jay has also been instrumental in helping many clients to establish their own charitable giving funds totaling over $18M. Jay and his wife Hilde also lead by example when it comes to charitable financial planning. In 2012, they established The Dryden Leadership Award at FHU, his alma mater. This scholarship allows the couple to not only provide financial support, but also allows Jay to mentor students who share his same entrepreneurial spirit. And last year, when updating their estate plan, they created a trust to provide financially for their son Axl until age 25. At that time, after providing him with a fixed inheritance, the rest of their estate pays out to a Charitable Giving Fund which will continue to support their favorite charitable works until long after they are gone.
MARTINIS AND MANUSCRIPTS BOOK CLUB There are two very different and interesting books coming up for the February and March Martinis and Manuscripts Book Club discussions, including a visit by author from Athens with a unique background. On February 16, Joanne Horn will be bringing us the interesting correspondence that took place between Gloria Vanderbilt and son, CNN Journalist Anderson Cooper in The Rainbow Comes and Goes: A Mother and Son On Life, Love, and Loss. Though Cooper had always considered himself close to his mother, his intensely busy career affords him little time to spend with her. After she suffered a brief but serious illness at the age of ninety-one, they resolved to change their relationship by beginning a year-long conversation unlike any they had ever had before. In these often humorous and moving exchanges, they share their most private thoughts and the hard-earned truths they’ve learned along the way. In their words their distinctive personalities shine through—Anderson’s journalistic outlook on the world is a sharp contrast to his mother’s idealism and unwavering optimism. This is a candid conversation between a mother and a son (…well, also a lot of family gossip) who live in very different worlds, and have very different world views. It’s interesting so you won't want to miss the discussion. The second book which will be covered on March 16 is Rainey Street Stories: Reflections on Secret Wars, Espionage and Terrorism, by our visiting author John W. Davis who now resides in Athens, AL. This book is a compilation of stories, essays, and poems by Davis, who is a retired intelligence officer, and takes place from Europe, to Asia, and back to the Americas. It is written very much like a “stream of consciousness” with no continuous story line, but is a series of his reflections centering on the thoughts of an agent in the mundane and deliberate gathering of data and observations. Davis' writing doesn't glamorize it like movies do or take you on a thrill ride like TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28 a spy novel. He brings you into the world of 5:30-9:00 P.M. espionage through people and through feelings. He and his family were overseas in Europe MENU HIGHLIGHTS: altogether some 13 of his 37 years in the Army. Turtle Soup, Crawfish and Oyster Bar After reading this book, you will have a good Fried Alligator with Corn • Jalapeño Fritters inside look at the methods, techniques and tactics Seafood Pastalaya • Grilled Cajun Stuffed of the counter intelligence professional.
