MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER As June marks the official beginning of summer, The Ledges looks forward to a season of superb scenery and wonderful events. The club is a beautiful gathering place year-round, but there is not a view in Huntsville that compares to the miles of cityscape that can be seen while dining on the terrace. Every Thursday evening throughout the summer we have live music on the terrace for you to enjoy. I encourage you to grab a group of friends and come listen to some of Huntsville's most talented musicians while enjoying a fantastic dinner prepared by The Ledges culinary team.

WELCOME, NEW MEMBERS Danny and Beverly Alm Bo and Amy Bailey Matthew and Susan Gilbert Dr. Jack and Margaret Gleason David Harwell Brian and Jane Hinson Charles Lands Sarah Macalluso

The Ledges staff is working hard in all areas - setting high expectations and paying attention to the fine details. The team continues to put together great events for our members, including a few new events coming up in July. The Cliffhanger, our Member Guest Golf Tournament, will take place at the very beginning of June. The event sold out in just two weeks and for the first time in history, there was a waiting list. Our holiday brunches are a staple event and the recent Easter and Mother's Day Brunches were outstanding. We had many compliments on the food and service with the attendance numbers being at a record high. If you were part of these events, thank you so much for attending. If you were unable to attend, I hope you will join us for our Father's Day Brunch on June 18. I would like to recognize two of our very own for their outstanding performance both at The Ledges and in their professions. I am very proud of both Rob Clark and Phillip Collier for their recent achievements. It is an honor to work with such talented and dedicated men.

Neil and Elena Moats David and Dawn Pumpelly Robbie and Betsy Robinson Robert and Katherine Smith

Director of Golf Rob Clark was awarded the 2016 Dixie Section PGA Professional of the Year. The award is given to a PGA member for their overall performance including leadership, service and promotion of the game of golf. Overall performance at the member's facility, level of service to the PGA section and to the Association and their image as a golf professional are also considered. Executive Chef Phillip Collier was recently nominated as one of Huntsville's top chefs and will be featured in an upcoming issue of EVENT Magazine. In addition to the EVENT Magazine recognition, 35801 Magazine will be featuring Chef and highlighting his culinary skills in their summer publication. Rob Clark accepting the PGA award.

If you see Rob or Chef at the club, please be sure to congratulate them on their accomplishments. Have a great summer, Jim Ausley

A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF It amazes me how quickly we've gotten into the season. It is already the beginning of June and the course is in great shape as we prepare to host one of our most important events at the club. Member Guest, otherwise known as the "Cliffhanger" will be played June 1-3. It is a great opportunity for us to proudly promote our club and our members. I am proud to say that we had a record number of sign ups and filled the event in less than two weeks. I hope that all who will be playing in the event will enjoy themselves and if anyone who is not playing in the Cliffhanger needs help arranging golf elsewhere, please do not hesitate to contact the professional staff. Remember that the golf course will close Thursday, June 1 at 1:00 p.m., and will reopen Sunday, June 4, at 8:00 a.m., for normal member play.

Junior golf continues to be a big draw for our members and their children. We have several juniors playing in organized events throughout the south and many of our kids are playing in the PGA Junior League. We are continuing to see our rounds grow based on good weather and we hope that you will take advantage of the beautiful golf course that we have for you. Make sure that you keep up with all of our golf activities through our daily emails, website calendar or the golf booklet that we mailed earlier in the season.

See you on the course. Rob Clark, Director of Golf

Last, I want to remind you to take advantage of our Trackman, especially if you are struggling with your putter. The professional staff will be able to put you through our Trackman Putter Component. This is an excellent way to make sure you have a properly fitted putter and we will be able to determine if you need help with your stroke.

JUNIOR GOLF UPDATE JORDAN DEBONIS, PGA

Juniors, It is that time of the year! School is out and it is time to get working on your golf game. Thank you to those who came out for the Family Big Break and Ryder Cup challenges. Both were fun events and we had a great turn out. It is always fun when the entire family gets involved and we are looking forward to hosting more parent/child events. I would like to see a group of the juniors getting together once a week to play at least 9 holes. I would be more than happy to join them during this time and talk a little more about course management. We are going to have a busy junior schedule this year that includes a lot of clinics and tournaments. If you have been considering joining The Ledges Junior Golf Club, there is still time to get signed up. The program is open to children and grandchildren of Ledges golf members who are between the ages of 5 and 18. The beginner players are introduced to the game while the older more advanced group get a lot of course coaching as we prepare them for tournament golf.

NORTHERN ALABAMA JUNIOR TOUR SERIES The Ledges Country Club – Tuesday, June 13, 1:00 p.m. RTJ Hampton Cove – Thursday, June 15, 8:00 a.m. Burning Tree – Saturday June 24, 11:30 a.m. Canbrake – Thursday, June 29, 2:00 p.m. Goose Pond Colony (Plantation Course) – Monday, July 3, 10:00 a.m. Goose Pond Colony (Lake Course) – Tuesday, July 11, 10:00 a.m. Colonial Golf Course – Thursday, July 13, 12:30 p.m.

Some great golf opportunities outside of The Ledges Junior Golf Club are the U.S. Kids Local Tour events this summer. These are open to juniors between 5 and 14 years old. It is a great learning opportunity for the juniors and parents will be able to caddy for their child. The membership fee for the U.S. Kids Tour is $40 and tournament entry fees range from $37 to $47. You can visit the http://www.uskidsgolf.com/ tournaments/local for the schedule and more information regarding the tour.

I am excited to be running the Northern Alabama Junior Tour this year. I encourage all of our juniors to play in these events. It is such an awesome way to get involved in a competitive tournament atmosphere. I have 7 scheduled events for this summer in North Alabama and there are plenty more to play in around the Birmingham area. These tournaments are open to boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 18. There is a onetime membership fee of $50 and each tournament is $35 which includes range balls, lunch and prizes for the winners. Please visit http://alabamanwfloridapga.com/alnwfljrtour for more information. We are, for the fist time, hosting a SJGT tournament here at The Ledges. This is a great way for all juniors to play their home course in a 2-day tournament. The tournament will be help Monday and Tuesday, July 17 and 18. We hope to see all of the juniors participating in this event.

ON THE COURSE WITH ADAM LAIRD

With the crowning of a new Masters Champion comes the due diligence of many golfers to dust off their golf clubs and start playing the game again. Out members here at The Ledges are no different. With a great turnout for the Opening Day Tournament, we are excited about the play that we are already receiving. The golf course is in great shape and the temperatures are rising. There are so many different events taking place this summer, so be sure to visit the 2017 event schedule on our website. Our Member Guest tournament has filled up and looks to be one of the best events of the year. There is still an opportunity to play in the Member Member and Club Championship tournaments, so make sure you sign up to play in the Golf Shop. There are many things to keep in mind as we rev up on the new season. Please be mindful to repair ball marks made on the greens and divots taken from the fairway. As our play increases, these are two areas that the members and their guests can significantly help the club and its employees. Adhering to the cart path rules set for the day is also an important way members can help the course stay in beautiful shape. This information can be found on the scorecard in the golf cart (green scorecard denotes 90 degrees and red scorecards are when the course is cart path only), we also email this information in the morning email or you can simply stop by the Golf Shop before you play.

Enjoy this season! The golf course will not disappoint. Adam Laird

PLEASE REPAIR BALL MARKS! Only YOU can prevent ball mark damage.

RIGHT! 1. Close the gap/hole with putter by patting down the ball mark. 2. Insert green-save tool on the high side behind the ball mark and push the back towards the center. 3. Do not pull up, twist or lift with the tool. 4. Push both sides of the ball mark into the center. 5. Gently tap the surface down with the putter. 6. Never use loosened turf for repair.

WRONG! Pulling up for lifting on the center or the sides will tear the roots and result in brown spots taking weeks for the surface to heal. Do not pull up or twist with the tool. This will only bring sand to the surface and tear the root system.

RIGHT! Insert tool and push the back and sides forward to center. No damage to root system. Healing starts immediately.

COURSE UPDATE F R O M

D I R E CTO R O F AGRO N O M Y J IM H OW E LL

The course and grounds conditions are beginning to take shape as the majority of our projects were completed during the spring. One of which was the installation of 3.25 acres of Meyers Zoysia on holes 3, 9, 10, 11, 18, and 7. We also removed 3.25 acres of common Bermuda and installed the majority of that sod in the roughs and common areas around the golf course ultimately improving aesthetics and playability. Last season we finished the Bermuda removal program on holes 6, 14, 15, 16 and 17 and it is starting to show a great improvement with Meyers being the dominant turf stand. By the end of 2018 the program will be completed and the course will be restored to Zoysia fairways. Hopefully many of our members saw of Rob Clark and myself discussing cart path rules and some of the issues that we’ve had of players not obeying the Daily Cart Rule or taking carts in areas where they are not allowed. If you missed the video, you can view it by visiting http://bit.ly/2pCuuKP. Each morning the golf course is checked by a member of the Agronomy team who then notifies the Golf Shop of the cart path rule for the day. The Golf Shop then e-mails the membership the rules and pin locations for the day. We have 3 policies for cart usage: 1. Cart path only. Carts are restricted to all cart paths. 2. Rough only. Carts may enter into the roughs and mulch paths. 3. Carts off paths. Carts are allowed on the golf course using the 90 degree rule and exit at the cart arrow sign. Please note that holes 1, 3, 5, 9, 11, and 13 are permanently cart path only. We also ask to keep carts off all tee and green surrounds and steep slopes. It should be known that carts can and will create a lot of damage from compaction during the season and rutting of turf in wet conditions. We ask our members and guests to make an effort in following the rules for the day and use the mulch areas as enter an exit points to the fairway and not the sodded areas. For reference, the entire Ledges Golf Cart policy is on the following page.

THE LED GE S GOL F CART POL I CY It is The Ledges policy to restrict cart traffic to cart paths when weather or turf conditions warrant. This policy ensures that we can continue to provide the best possible playing conditions in the long term. Violation of this policy may result in suspension of golf privileges. Daily Cart Rule: The Ledges Superintendent will evaluate the course each morning and make a determination of one of the following daily cart rules: 90 Degree, Rough Only, Cart Path Only.

2017 Swing "Fore" Children with Cancer Monday, June 19

All golf carts must adhere to the daily rule. The daily cart rule will be communicated through the morning Golf Shop emails, verbally at check-in and on the scorecards. Green scorecards will be used for the 90 Degree rule and red scorecards will be for restricted usage. It is each player’s responsibility to know the daily cart rule. Golf carts are restricted to the cart path on all Par 3 holes. Golf carts must stay on the path around all tees and greens. Golf cart operators must obey all cart signs, avoid restricted areas, and return to the cart path when indicated. A valid driver’s license is required to operate golf carts. A maximum of two people, including small children, are allowed to ride in a golf cart. A maximum of two bags are allowed on the golf cart. Standing on or hanging from golf carts is forbidden. Two riding players in the same group will share one golf cart. If a golfer insists on riding alone, he/she may do so by paying a premium fee (1 1/2 times the regular fee.) A single golfer will be charged the regular cart fee. Golfers who have checked in as walkers do not have cart privileges. Walkers who are seen riding on a cart will be charged a full 18-hole cart fee. The golf cart operator is responsible for any damage done to the golf cart. In the event a member and/or their guest violates The Ledges Golf Cart Policy, the following protocol will be followed: 1st offense: Verbal warning 2nd offense: Letter from the Chief Operating Officer 3rd offense: 30 day suspension of cart privileges 4th offense: Meeting with the ownership

The culinary team and I have been hard at work providing the membership with the best products and quality of food. I have really enjoyed my time at The Ledges and continue to try and meet as many members as possible. This club and its members have truly began to feel like home and I am greatly appreciative of that. Summer brings a lot of exciting events at the club. I am happy to announce that I will be hosting a hands-on French inspired cooking class on June 7. There is only room for 16 individuals, so please make your reservations soon. MARTINIS AND MANUSCRIPTS BOOK CLUB The June 15 meeting of Martinis and Manuscripts marks the end of the 2016 – 2017 season, our thirteenth. The next two months without meetings provide a great time to break out a few of those new books and have a great time reading! Our June book is an apocalyptic novel, describing the effects on a small town by the burst of a nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) that shuts down all electrical and electronic systems and items over an extended area of the United States. This is a story in which one man struggles to save his family and his small North Carolina town after America loses a war, in one second, a war that will send America back to the Dark Ages. If you recall about six days here in Huntsville in 2011 without our electrical system and then extend that to incapacitate all radios, TVs, computerized equipment – including cars produced in the last two decades – individual cell phones, and numerous other items … permanently, you will get some idea of the chaos that could result. Our few days themselves were no fun. Months before publication, One Second After was cited on the floor of Congress as a book all Americans should read. Here is your chance to not only read about and to hear about the book from reviewer Joan Diehl, but also to discuss such a situation. The Book Club takes a summer break during July and August, and resumes meetings on Thursday, September 21st. This is an excellent time to read a couple of good books, both for enjoyment and maybe education. If you are interested in joining the Martinis and Manuscripts book club and participating in our interesting and fun monthly book reviews, please contact Bob Westerfeldt at 256-534-1269 or rwesterfeldt1@comcast.net to answer any of your questions and to get your name on the list to receive notifications of the meetings and the books to be covered.

Please give Haley a warm Ledges welcome when you see her around the club or at club events.
