Following June’s summer solstice the nights are beginning to get shorter, however do not fear as this month’s Leisure Magazine will brighten any evening, filled with great hotels, great deals and great activities to enjoy over the summer months. With festivals in abundance during the holiday season all over the UK, no place can boast the variety and excitement of Edinburgh’s festival marathon taking place in August. The magazine takes a closer look at the festival highlights that Edinburgh has to offer, whilst examining what the Scottish capital has in store for visitors. We also take time to catch up with the boss as she reaches the climax of her adventure, arriving in New York.

Hard Days Night Hotel Liverpool, Merseyside

“I was placed here when my original hotel reneged on a booking, and boy oh boy I am so glad they did. The reception area is awash with Beatles pictures and one could quite happily spend hours pouring over them. The reception staff are very pleasant and nothing was too much trouble for them. I had "the George" room which overlooked Mathew Street, the whole decor of the room was top notch and so clean. The TV system catered for every need and even has it's own dedicated Beatles Music channel...(which stayed on all the time). The bed was very comfy and was welcoming after a "Hard Days Night" partying. The bathroom was exceptionally clean with a superb shower and big fluffy towels, also the White Company toiletries were a lovely touch.””

If you are looking for a luxury Liverpool hotel then the Beatles themed Hard Days Night boutique hotel is a ‘fab four’ starred boutique hotel in the heart of Liverpool, in the popular tourist destination of the Cavern Quarter opposite the famed Cavern Club, synonymous with all Beatles fans.

Hazlitt's

Rooms from

Soho, London Hazlitt’s is the ideal base in the heart of London’s cosmopolitan Theatreland, with an intimate charm no large hotel can match. Hazlitt’s occupies a group of historic houses in Frith Street, Soho Square. In 1718 there were no modern conveniences, but the hotel has updated the plumbing, installed bathrooms and replaced most of the candles with electricity. At Hazlitt’s the philosophy is simple. They have set out to create the kind of accommodation they themselves would love to find in the heart of one of the world’s great cities. Civilised surroundings; old-fashioned hospitality; friendly, efficient service; a location away from the roar of traffic, but within a very short walk of the most important attractions. All 30 rooms at Hazlitt’s today are named after 18th and early 19th century residents or visitors to the house. The bedrooms have Wi-Fi, telephones and satellite television unobtrusively installed. The rooms are traditional, with original panelled walls and mellow, unpretentious old furniture, pictures and rugs. The croissants are baked fresh every morning. A comfortable room in elegant surroundings, a location second to none: no wonder Hazlitt’s is such a favourite with stage, film and media people from all over the world.

Feature Hotel

The Rookery Barbican, London

Open fires, mellow panelling and period furniture give the Rookery its unique, homely atmosphere. Quietly located a short distance from St Paul’s and the Bank of England, the only remaining early houses in Peter’s Lane have been repaired to create this delightful small hotel. Even the bathroom fittings are genuine antiques, all lovingly restored. Here at the Rookery, you can sense the ambience of Georgian London as you push open our hand carved front door. Guests are looked after by helpful, intelligent staff. Our rooms have space to work or relax. Communications are state of the art. Our croissants are baked fresh on the premises each morning (but, sadly, not on the period kitchen range which still exists below stairs.)

“We've just returned from a two-night stay and had a perfect time. Wonderful building, gorgeous groundfloor room (with downstairs, claw-foot bath and shower etc), friendly but discreet service, impeccable style. Having also stayed at Hazlitt's, we'd now like to revisit both.

The Epic Adventure Continues Travelling through Alaska in May into Canada in June - Now it’s July and our CEO Ann Cordner is settling in to life in The Big Apple New York is where Ann’s epic overland trip reaches its conclusion, but you can catch up on her latest shenanigans right here in the Leisure magazine.

25 May

Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska I thought Alaska would have its own “flavour”, but I could have been in any one of the many places I visited in the States. The first night we ate locally at a place called Gwennies, a typical country style rustic restaurant. The USA never ceases to amaze me at the quality and quantity of its eating establishments. The company, service and food was excellent and didn’t cost a fortune.

01 June

Chicken/Dawson City/Whitehorse/Takh, Alaska We arrived at Dawson City at 5 pm and as the driver was going to be driving to Whitehorse through the night we were instructed to keep ourselves amused until midnight so that he could get a sleep! It was very disconcerting to be dumped virtually homeless in this way! We arrived in Haynes, Alaska yesterday late afternoon after an all day spectacular drive through mind blowing scenery stopping of at Lake Kathleen which is still frozen and Million Dollar Falls. Along the way we passed out of Canada into Alaska again and saw two bears and an eagle. How much better does it get? I’ll tell you how much better it gets – how about a Mexican meal? That’s how much! Last night I had one of the most delicious Mexican meals ever, ever, ever.

8

Banff, Alberta, Canada

June

We are now 14 days from New York with several thousand miles to go. It is quite daunting but I’m glad that I have now made the decision not to camp any more. Sleeping on the bus is quite comfortable once you get used to the idea of sleeping with others!. We have two more hostel stays which might mean we can do some laundry at last! Since we hit North America it has been more difficult to keep both ourselves and our clothes clean due to the speed at which we are travelling. And, I believe, the worst is yet to come when we “wild camp”...

14 June

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming I was once here with Davy at this time of year and the weather was blistering hot. Not so this time. There is still snow on the ground and last night the temperature dropped to 32F. The campground had a high alert on Grizzly Bears because they had been seen in the area and sure enough this morning there were fresh foot prints around the boys’ tent. And we had walked down to the loos in the night! Too risky! !

15 Devils Tower, South Dakota June

Breakfast at Devils Tower! Not many people can claim that. This is the tower featured in the Speilberg film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". The tower is sacred to the Indians and at the bottom there is a very beautiful sculpture by Junku Muto entitled Circle of Sacred Smoke. Last night the weather treated us to a spectacular rain, wind and lightning storm. Unfortunately the tents couldn’t withstand this and slowly started collapsing! Our intrepid Jonny went to the rescue of the tent with Ceiron, Ben and Douglas inside. It was a battle against the elements but they were finally rescued and the tent was left to its own devices. The same fate befell Sirin, Andy and Michele in their individual tents.

20 Woodstock, New York June

When you see the setting you realise just why this place was chosen for the famous festival in 1970. It is so beautiful and a perfect for that "Summer of Love", allbeit that it poured all that weekend! We spent the day in the museum and visitor centre there. It was amazing.

21 New York City June

We camped at the Catskills last night and Margaret, who lives in Connecticut and left the trip in Beijing, came to join us. She was the oldest person on the trip until she left, a mantle that I was then bestowed with. It was great to see her and I have arranged to meet up with her again in New York on 29th. So this morning we set off for New York and arrived early afternoon. The hostel that I'm staying in is amazing. Within sight of the Empire State Building on the corner of 5th Avenue and spotlessly clean! All for $85 a room. Tonight some of us are meeting up again for a farewell drink in Greenwich Village. Most are flying home within the next day or so, but my trip continues.

23 June

Our meeting at the White Hart Tavern in Greenwich was quite sad. Many good memories and good friends, but I'm sure some of us will keep in touch. and made 4800% profit in less than half a year “Infotel has been a great find for our business. In terms of service, system use and value for money, they are way ahead of the other booking agents we use. Other, larger agents give us good levels of business, but the service is often poor, and the cost is high. The annual fee we paid to Infotel 5 months ago has given us a return of around 4800% so far in terms of business received, which is incredible. We have recently linked their system to our own website too, and as a result we are seeing this increase further. These guys are good and I can't recommend them highly enough!" Edward Breadner
