CATHERINE EAGER With change comes a period of time where one seems to be in a haze of memories and uncertainty. Living as an expat in a foreign country, this state of haziness is something I stumble upon often. It can come in the form of excitement and adventure, or nostalgia and sadness. No matter what form it appears in, it’s always linked to change; and to me, change is essential. Otherwise, life becomes stale. The style of my entry this month is driven by the end of that hot Summer haze that has us all wishing for more, but also looking forward to all things Fall.

AYLA MIROLO ‘Haze’ made me think of a hazy, cloudy, cold beer on a hot summer day. No matter what I did I couldn’t get the ide of a perfect crisp beer out of my head. Whether you’re into the cloudy beers or not, a cold one is always a good idea.

KAT SCHOBER It’s been quite a hazy summer. It’s been frantic and fun. But mostly, it’s just been hot. Sometimes, I walk outside and I swear that I see physical heat waves emanating from my body. Here’s to the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. And here’s to an even crazier fall.

DEVON CLOUGH On the coldest days of winter, let’s always keep close to mind those hazy, sizzling summer hours spent sprawled on a hammock, sheltered by the shade of two friendly trees, the cicadas trilling to set the soundtrack, and a delicious dripping popsicle in hand.

BRITTANY ARITA
That feeling of a song you know by heart, windows down and a mid-august heat. Just enough of a breeze. The way the pavement radiates at this time of day. Mirage-like. You can almost see the particles; the energy of everything.

ELISHA-RIO APILADO With Haze being a state of mind that’s confusing and full of obscurity, I tried to depict visually what exactly goes through my mind when I’m in that mental state. My mind is really gritty, not at all soft-edged in my thoughts and just pieces flying in every which direction. Even though there’s this erratic (and sometimes jarring) movement in my head, there’s something beautiful about letting things just organically flow as they’re supposed to.

JANNA BARRETT In literature, fog and haze seem to represent mystery and a state of confusion. The physical world mirrors the protagonist’s inner search for answers to questions arising within. Life is all one big haze—you get glimpses of what you think is next to come and what steps you should take, but clarity never comes until time passes and the haze lifts. Figuring out a concept to illustrate this notion was illusive for me, and that’s why I simply went with the word itself in the end.

KAITLIN CALLENDER Throughout my process for this submission I was constantly trying to letter and illustrate some random quote with some deep meaning. After trying around 3 different quotes nothing was really coming together how I was wanted. Then it just clicked - show haze for what it is. I broke out my watercolors and started playing with hazy letters. After that it became about applying textures, layers, and color. It worked out that I wasn’t able to see anything clearly until I started to play around.

JESSICA FIMBEL The past month has been hazy - filled with impending deadlines and a whole lot of wedding planning. I saw this saying a couple years ago and there are times when I feel like it is the perfect way to describe my state of mind. Right now is absolutely one of those times.

KRISTEN GIRARD The Dog Days(ze)! August is always the hottest month of the year, and with that comes the hazy, thick air that feels like you’re swimming when you walk to your car. Sweating as soon as you get out of the shower. Rings that won’t come off your fingers. Hair that frizzes as soon as you step outside. Tossing and turning in sticky heat…*insert eye-roll here*. Thank you, August, for being so damn predictable, (you kind of suck). COME ON AUTUMN. Get your ass here already!

KATE LALIME I know people often say the older you get, the faster time passes, but I have really felt it this summer. I love the quiet hazy mornings before it gets too hot. Even though fall is my favorite season, I’ll miss the longer days and time spent outside.

LAUREN FLORENCE “Our long bygone burdens, mere echoes of the spring, But where have we come, and where shall we end? If dreams can’t come true, then why not pretend?” This piece is inspired by my favorite animated mini-series, Over The Garden Wall. This month’s prompt instantly reminded me of the beautifully wistful lyrics of the title song. I am brought back to fond memories of Autumn’s past, and I welcome it with open arms as Summer comes to an end.

PAM GALANTE Where we want to be in a week, a month, and even a year can sometimes seem far away and unclear. Goals and interests change and shift, and while that is scary, it is important to embrace. What matters most is staying on the right path that will help you reach your goals, while also being open to the new paths and goals life may bring your way.

MAT DUBORD Open your eyes. See through the haze. When there are dozens of BREAKING NEWS headlines per day (each one more concerning than the last), it’s hard to keep up. There are so many bullshit “news” stories and quick-read click-bait articles that get passed off as factual. Be skeptical. Be diligent. Get the facts.

CASSANDRA LEA-SAXTON Earlier this month in Seattle, we had over a week of constant haze caused by smoke from the fires happening in Canada. It was over 90 degrees, humid, and we never saw the sun, just an orange-brownish glow when looking up at the sky instead of the blue you typically see this time of year. At times it was so smokey, that you couldn’t see other parts of the city because it was all hidden by an overwhelming haze. It felt like the sky and heat were closing in on you, a feeling that Seattle rarely, if ever, experiences.
