Presidential Address Greetings, I would like to thank the brothers of the Sigma Alpha Lambda Chapter for the opportunity to serve as your President for the 2020-2021 fraternal year. I am deeply humbled by your support and encouragement. I hope that we continue to grow as brothers and support our community in aiding downtrodden humanity in its efforts to achieve higher social, economic, and intellectual status. Since July 24, 2010, our Chapter has worked diligently in providing services and advocacy to the communities of Southern Maryland. We are distinct in our efforts in delivering mentorship to young men through our Go-to-High-School Goto-College program and educating the public about the importance of voter registration and political engagement through the A Voteless People is a Hopeless People program. By executing these programs, we are developing future leaders in our communities. We will continue to support our other community service projects such as Project Alpha, Brothers Keepers, Adopt-a-Highway, March of Dimes, and Thanksgiving Food Basket Giveaways. The year 2020 continues to be a challenge for many as a result of the COVID-19 global pandemic and frustrations stemming from decades of police brutality and social injustices. There is much work to be done during these socially hard times. We have an opportunity to influence and educate our community in an incredibly positive way. We must continue to move “forward ever, backward never. First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All remains our motto and sets our footsteps to make social changes. If you are an Alpha Brother looking for a chapter home or looking to visit, we meet on the second Thursday of the month. For more information regarding our community service initiatives or general Chapter updates, please visit our website at www.SAL1906.org.

National Programs “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” (VPHP) was initiated as a National Program of Alpha during the 1930s when many African-Americans had the right to vote but were prevented from voting because of poll taxes, threats of reprisal, and lack of education about the voting process. Voter education and registration have remained a dominant focus of this outreach activity for over 65 years. In the 1990s, the focus shifted to include political awareness and empowerment, delivered most frequently through town meetings and candidate forums.
Who Can Vote? Any registered voter can vote. If you need to register you can do so online or submit a voter registration application by October 13, 2020. MAAC President and District Director
Brother Raymond Hawkins, Jr. was installed as the MAAC President and District Director on Saturday, June 13, 2020, during the 88th Eastern Regional Convention (ERC). Initially, the ERC was scheduled to take place in Southampton, Bermuda, April 2-5, 2020. However, in the best interest of everyone’s safety and overall well-being, the ERC was moved to a virtual platform due to COVID-19. Nevertheless, the ERC was a massive success with over 700 Brothers participating virtually via Zoom. Bro. Hawkins’ platform for his tenure as MAAC President is B.E.S.T.: Brotherhood, Excellent Service, and Togetherness! • Brotherhood, an important emphasis for the cornerstone of our Fraternity. • Excellent Service is reflected in the standard he provides to the MAAC and the communities it serves. • Togetherness, through bridging gaps and unifying Brothers across the District with transparent communication. Bro. Hawkins has identified critical opportunities for the MAAC, including modernizing Alpha, establishing more efficiencies for our chapters, and operationalizing the District as much as possible. Through his professional training, strategic planning, and exposure to various levels of the Fraternity, he knows what it takes to lead the MAAC. We, the Brothers of Sigma Alpha Lambda look forward to assisting him with carrying out his vision. The Light of Southern Maryland interviewed Bro. Hawkins; what follows is a transcript of the Q & A session. Q: How would you describe your leadership style?
relationship. Honesty, transparency, and integrity are also similar values that are important. My experience has shown me that being consistent with displaying these values leads to trust and reliability which is needed to push our fraternity forward.
A: Transformative. I do not believe in maintaining a prescribed status quo. I identify opportunities for improvement along with viable solutions and encourage input from the Brotherhood as well so we can execute in unison and move the mission of Alpha forward together.
Q: Who is your favorite leader? Why? A: My favorite leader is President Barack Obama for many reasons. For starters, he is a forward thinker, in every sense of the term. He ran a phenomenal campaign, is relatable, remained himself throughout his entire presidency, and displayed an extreme amount of humility despite the authority that
Q: What values are most important to you as a leader? A: First and foremost, is respect, because it is critical to have that in any healthy 32
comes with his role. Obama being elected as the President of the United States of America showed me that anything is possible through hard work, determination, and dedication. His presidency was especially motivating for people of color, especially our youth who benefit from seeing someone who looks like them in a position of power at that level and remain a positive role model for them to look up to.
A: When I initially arrived at the campus of the University of Maryland Baltimore County, I knew very little, if anything, about the Fraternity. However, the demeanor of the Brothers of the Nu Kappa Chapter (later re-chartered as the Upsilon Zeta Chapter) piqued my interest and encouraged me to do research on the Fraternity. Interestingly enough, I did more research on the Fraternity than I did schoolwork my entire freshman year.
Q: When your tenure as the MAAC President concludes, what legacy would you like to leave behind?
Q: If you could share a meal with any 4 individuals, living or dead, who would they be? Why?
A: Leaving a lasting impact on our District, which withstands time and changes how we do the work of Alpha for the better. I have always been advised to leave the District in a better place than where it was when I entered. Having been in the fraternity for 15 years, I’ve seen a lot and I think the MAAC is progressive in ways that can lead the rest of the Fraternity in the right direction.
A: Jewel Henry Arthur Callis, because he was very instrumental in spearheading the efforts to lay the groundwork for the growth and advancement and was around from the very beginning. I value history tremendously and Jewel Callis’ contributions to the Fraternity are definitely historical and noteworthy. Marcus Garvey, because he was way ahead of his time and was very adamant in his belief that we should reclaim our identity as Africans and people of color. Gil Scott-Heron, who was one of my favorite poets. I loved reading his work and listening to his music. Last but not least, Jay-Z, because of his immense skills and artistry. I think that Gil Scott-Heron was equally as talented as Jay-Z but he was not able to apply the business savviness to his artistry like Jay-Z was able to do.
Q: What are some of your favorite hobbies? A: I am an avid music lover and enjoy listening to a plethora of artists and genres spanning various time periods. In addition, I also enjoy exercising because health is important. Lastly, I really enjoy cooking and experimenting with new recipes, while also trying new foods. Q: What are some interesting facts about you that Brothers may not know?

MAAC College Vice President and Asst. District Director
Brother Jordan Philp was installed as the MAAC College Vice President and Asst. District Director for his second term on Saturday, June 13, 2020, during the 88th ERC with over 700 Brothers in attendance virtually via Zoom. Bro. Philp, a spring 2019 initiate of the Eta Zeta Chapter seated at Bowie State University (BSU), was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He has also spent parts of his childhood in North Carolina, Florida, and Maryland. Bro. Philp is a rising senior and a Computer Technology Major. During his sophomore year at BSU, Bro. Philp served as a Residence Assistant in the Office of Residence Life. The Light of Southern Maryland interviewed Bro. Philp; what follows is a transcript of the Q & A session. Q: How would you describe your leadership style?
Director? How have you been able to overcome these challenges?
A: I would describe myself as an amicable leader. I do not believe in micromanaging others. I believe in the abilities of those within my leadership circle. At times, I provide guidance and oversight, but I take a hands-off approach more often because I have faith that no matter what, ultimately, the work will get done. One of the things I pride myself on is being trustworthy and making the Brothers in the College chapters feel like they can approach me.
A: At times, getting the College chapters on one accord, while also emphasizing the importance of continuity and communication has been challenging. However, this could be due to the varying dynamics and environments throughout the various College chapters within the MAAC. However, ensuring that the lines of communication remain open by utilizing text messaging, Group Me, etc. are a few examples of how I have facilitated communication amongst the College Brothers.
Q: What values are most important to you as a leader?
Q: Where do you see yourself in the Fraternity in the next ten years?
A: Honesty, trustworthiness, and being a man of your word. Through my actions, the College brothers know that they can depend on me and that I have their best interest at heart.
A: Over the next ten years, I will continue giving my time, talents, and treasures by joining an Alumni chapter upon graduation, continuing to remain involved with the District operations in any capacity, and remaining financially active. My long term goal is to serve the Brothers of the Eastern Region as the Regional Vice President.
Q: What has been the most challenging aspect of your position as MAAC College Vice President and Assistant District 34
Q: What advice would you give your successor when your tenure as MAAC College Vice President concludes?
Morgan, which began during my sophomore year in their Sophomore Edge program. Q: As a young, educated, and wellrounded African American man, what does Black Lives Matter (BLM) mean to you?
A: First, do not hesitate to ask for assistance with implementing your vision. Second, take full advantage of seasoned Brothers and utilize the wealth of knowledge that they can provide. In the end, I could give you a different perspective on how to execute your goals and deliverables.
A: Throughout history, black lives have been mistreated and misrepresented. Therefore, the BLM movement is symbolic of equality, justice, and inclusivity that our people are seeking. The BLM movement advocates for the freedom, liberty, and justice for all promised to us by the United States Constitution. BLM is not meant to divide, but rather encourage our allies to stand up -- and join us -- in the fight for racial equality and justice.
Q: What are your post-graduate goals and aspirations? A: Upon graduating from BSU, I aspire to obtain employment in the Information Technology (IT) field as a Software Engineer or an IT/Network Specialist. I am currently in an internship program for JP

As the newly elected MAAC Alumni Vice President and Associate District Director, Bro. Ngwenya plans to leverage the Brotherhood’s resources and networks to better serve our communities. Born in Lusaka, Zambia, Bro. Ngwenya spent his early childhood in one of Southern Africa’s busiest capital cities. His family moved to the United States in the late 1980s, settling in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Bro. Ngwenya attended DeMatha Catholic High School and matriculated to the University of Maryland, College Park where he was initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. by way of the Iota Zeta Chapter during the fall semester of 2004. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences and is presently a Masters of Business Administration candidate at American University in Washington, DC. In 2016, Bro. Ngwenya was appointed and currently serves as the Chief of Staff to Robert C. White Jr., at-large Councilmember of the District of Columbia. As Chief of Staff, Bro. Ngwenya advises and activates a team dedicated to uplifting DC residents and their legacy. He champions progressive policy reform for Black and brown people, and for unadulterated gender justice and inclusivity. In his free time, Bro. Ngwenya curates a personal contemporary art collection, promotes the psychology of male fashion/style, and believes in unapologetic self-empowerment. The Light of Southern Maryland interviewed Bro. Ngwenya; what follows is a transcript of the Q & A session. Q: How would you describe your leadership style?
weaknesses and strengths to improve them. In leadership, you have to know how to follow, motivate, and when appropriate, show empathy.
A: My style of leadership can be described as a hybrid of being transformational and a coach. Through transformational leadership, I motivate my team members to unlock their untapped potential as they mature in their professional development that had not been previously identified. Likewise, as a coach, I place myself in their shoes and use motivational tools and skills to identify
Q: What values are most important to you as a leader? A: Being trustworthy is critical to leadership and that requires honesty and transparency. Leadership requires a lot from not only Brothers, but all people alike. Leadership 36
can sometimes be a lonely place, and being able to sleep in peace at night is paramount.
Q: When your tenure as the MAAC Alumni Vice President concludes, what legacy do you want to leave behind for your successor to inherit?
Q: What has motivated you to advance up the ranks in the Fraternity?
A: I want the next MAAC Alumni Vice President to inherit a blueprint for success. I am not afraid of failure, and I believe in using all available resources that can contribute to my success. I hope that the legacy left for my successor is that the District's operations and functionality are at a high level of efficiency.
A: I wanted to join the Fraternity leadership because I want my future son and grandson to have access to this beautiful Brotherhood. So for me, it is personal. The traits that I have cultivated in Alpha, I want to be shared with men for hundreds of years after we no longer walk this Earth. Q: What is your favorite book to read? Why?
Q: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
A: The Firm, by John Grisham. This book exposed me to the thrills and other aspects of legal work that I never envisioned. I remember reading this book as a teenager, and it piqued the curiosity I had for learning.
A: If I could live anywhere in the world, I would prefer to live in a Metropolis like city. Being born overseas and having parents from two different countries has shaped my view of the world. I have visited five of seven continents and am comfortable with various cultures. In essence, I am confident in saying that I would be able to thrive in any environment I am placed in.
Q: Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life? Why? A: Mahershala Ali. I have seen the roles he has played and the energy he brings in his personal life. It sometimes mirrors my own experience and I think he would do well – art imitating life.

Transition of Our Beloved Brother
The Brothers of SAL join the nation in mourning the loss of civil rights leader and activist Brother Reverend Dr. C.T. Vivian, who passed away on Friday July 17, 2020. Without a doubt, Bro. C.T. Vivian personified the distinguishable characteristics of what it means to be an “Alpha Man.” He marched side by side with the late great Brother Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and spent a substantial amount of his time participating in sit-in
protests in Peoria, Illinois. Brother C.T. Vivian once said, “You can turn your back on me, but you cannot turn your back on the idea of justice.” The Brothers of SAL and the Fraternity at large are extremely saddened by the loss of our dear Brother and would like to extend our sincerest condolences to his family, loved ones, friends, and all the individuals whose lives were significantly impacted by his remarkable contributions.
