Presidential Address Brothers, As we begin the third quarter of the fraternal year, the Sigma Alpha Lambda Chapter has been focused on carrying out the mission of Alpha. As the updates and articles in this newsletter will confirm, Alpha men are making an impact on the political, cultural, and academic experiences of southern Marylanders, from the youth to the elders. I sincerely thank the Brothers who have led this important work as well as your family, friends, and loved ones who have contributed and participated in several of the Chapter’s events. As our country continues transitioning to a new administration, Sigma Alpha Lambda is hopeful that a new light of peace and security will shine on America. As the COVID-19 vaccines are being distributed to combat the destruction caused by the global pandemic, the expectation of returning to a normal daily routine could be on the horizon. However, let us continue to stay safe! As always, I invite Alpha Brothers living in Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s Counties to join the Sigma Alpha Lambda Chapter as we continue to hold high the light of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. As you read these pages and become inspired to reconnect with Alpha, you are welcome to visit our website at www.SAL1906.org or email us at info@SAL1906.org for more information.

Message from the Editor Greetings Brothers, Welcome to The Light of Southern Maryland, the official quarterly newsletter of the Sigma Alpha Lambda Chapter (SAL), Key No. 677, of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. This newsletter is distributed to Alpha Brothers of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Alpha Chapters (MAAC) and residents of Southern Maryland to increase the awareness of SAL’s implementation of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.’s national programs, local community service initiatives, and philanthropic efforts facilitated by the Alpha Foundation of Southern Maryland. As we continue navigating in unchartered territories forced upon us by the COVID-19 global pandemic, it is quite clear that the country needs us Alpha men to continue upholding the aims of our beloved Fraternity – Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love For All Mankind. This pandemic has highlighted the deficiencies interwoven into the fabric of our society – the obvious disparities in the criminal justice system, long-standing legislative policies in the federal, state and local judicial systems, and the substantial wealth gap among the rich and poor. We must continue to advocate on behalf of the voiceless and provide service and advocacy to our community in a way that reaches far beyond the execution of our national programs. Alpha can and must lead from the forefront in the fight for equality. Brothers, please continue to follow the guidelines from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in addition to your local public health officials to ensure your safety and the safety of others around you. Mask up and stay safe! This virus is affecting African Americans at a disproportionate rate than other ethnic group, so we must continue to bare down to help curb the spread.

Fraternally, Brother Devon A. Taliaferro, Sr. Associate Editor-to-the-Sphinx Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Sigma Alpha Lambda Chapter

National Programs A Voteless People is a Hopeless People “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” (VPHP) was initiated as a National Program of Alpha during the 1930s when many African-Americans had the right to vote but were prevented from voting because of poll taxes, threats of reprisal, and lack of education about the voting process. Voter education and registration have remained a dominant focus of this outreach activity for over 65 years. In the 1990s, the focus shifted to include political awareness and empowerment, delivered most frequently through town hall meetings and candidate forums.

Go-to-High School, Go-to-College Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. established the “Go-to-High School, Go-to-College” program in 1922. This program focuses on preparing 9th-12th grade young men to excel in college, develop leadership skills to use in the future, and establish prospective leaders for southern Maryland. The program targets male students, currently enrolled in high

school with a desire to GO TO COLLEGE! Students enrolled in this program are provided with potential scholarship opportunities, attend field trips, and more. For more information, please contact Brother Edward McNeil, Director of Educational Activities, via email at info@SAL1906.org.

The Education Committee facilitated the third session of the 2020 – 2021 Virtual Goto-High School, Go-to-College Program on December 19, 2020. The topic of discussion for this session was financial literacy. The eight students in attendance received a presentation from Brother Paul Booze on several key aspects of money management.

Topics of discussion included establishing a checking and savings account, managing debit and credit cards, and the importance of developing a budget. In addition, the students also presented their vision boards from the previous workshop to the Brothers of SAL in attendance.

offering his own personal experiences during these situations. He also provided his perspective on how he believes these interactions can improve. At the conclusion of the workshop, a survey was conducted to assess the students’ level of engagement, comprehension, and retention of the information presented to them throughout the session. Among the twenty students in attendance, those with the top three scores were awarded a $30 gift card.

The final virtual workshop of this quarter took place on February 20, 2021. The topic of discussion for this session was police engagement with guest speaker Lieutenant Bernard W. Jones, Jr. from the Forest Heights, Maryland Police Department. Lt. Jones facilitated a thought-provoking discussion on the broad ranging interactions that young black men typically have with police officers, while also

Project Alpha Project Alpha was established in 1980 when Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the March of Dimes began collaboratively on this national program. This initiative is designed to provide education, motivation and skill-building on issues of responsibility, relationships, teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases for young males aged 12-15 years. Designed to provide young men with current and accurate information about teen pregnancy prevention, Project Alpha consists of a series of workshops and informational sessions conducted by the Brothers of SAL. For more information, please contact Brother Edward McNeil, Director of Educational Activities, via email at info@SAL1906.org. SAL facilitated its annual Project Alpha initiative virtually on January 16, 2021 via Zoom. Brother Larry Rentz presented and engaged teenaged participants about the importance of practicing safer sex, and preventing teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS.

This particular topic of discussion generated a considerable amount of interest and dialogue among the students in attendance. They also provided interesting responses to the anonymous surveys that were conducted throughout the session.

Brother Jeremy Stephens was initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. by way of the Gamma Mu Chapter, seated at Livingstone College, located in Salisbury, North Carolina during the Spring 2002 semester. Brother Stephens currently serves as the Sergeant-at-Arms for SAL, his second consecutive term in office. In 2022, Brother Stephens will reach the milestone of being a 20-year member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. so The Light of Southern Maryland interviewed him to collect memories and reflections on twenty years of fraternal life and service. What follows is a transcript of the Q & A session. Q: What inspired you to seek membership in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. while attending Livingstone College?

really meshed well with the Brothers on the yard. I always told myself that if I were to join an organization, I wanted to be a part of the originators and for me, Alpha was it.

A: I originally began my college journey at North Greenville University (NGU), a private liberal arts college located in Tigerville, South Carolina on a football scholarship. Although I enjoyed a substantial amount of success on the football field as a standout freshman outside linebacker, my experience off the field was not ideal by any stretch of the imagination. The amount of racism I experienced from my football coaches ultimately led to me transferring to Livingstone College prior to the beginning of my Sophomore year. I chose to attend Livingstone College because it provided me with an environment that was the antithesis of what I had experienced at NGU and was more conducive to my overall upbringing.

Q: Next year will commemorate your 20year membership in the fraternity. As you reflect back on your time in Alpha thus far, how would you summarize your overall experience? A: My experience in Alpha thus far has been like non-other. As small as Alpha is in numbers as it relates to the ratio of the total population of African Americans in this country, I am proud to be a part of an organization that plays a monumental role in the uplifting and liberation of the black community. We are truly one of the hidden jewels of the African diaspora. It is a good feeling to know that you are destined to run into an Alpha Brother in just about any field across the professional spectrum whether it be doctors, lawyers, judges, firefighters, law enforcement, public safety, politicians, etc. My experience has been beneficial and I feel privileged to have worked along many good Brothers along the way to make an impact in the lives of North Carolinians, Hawaiians, and southern Marylanders. I look forward to

What ultimately piqued my interest in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was being able to see firsthand the distinguished demeanor of the Brothers of Gamma Mu on the yard. They were always very down to earth and relatable, professional, about their business, and valued their grades. My personality 22

my time there, I was an active member of the Mu Beta Lambda Chapter and I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Even though there were Brothers in various branches of the military who came from all walks of life in general and in Alpha, there wasn’t much, if any, infighting within the Chapter. The Brothers really worked well together when it came to doing the work of Alpha and conducting business within the Chapter.

Q: What other positions have you served in the fraternity or are there any noteworthy accomplishments you received that you would like to share? A: During my tenure at Gamma Mu, I served as Chapter President, Vice President, Director of Membership Intake, and in the capacity of Assistant to the Deputy of Undergraduate Affairs for the Association of North Carolina Alphamen (ANCA), the North Carolina District of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. I also served as the Chairman of the ANCA Awards Committee. Since becoming a member of SAL in 2015, I have served as the Director of Social and Fraternal Events as well as the Director of Fundraising.

Some Brothers may also not know that I played Outside Linebacker all four years of college and received First and Second team All- Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) honors. I also participated in a supplemental combine and was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Jacksonville Jaguars and participated in their mini-camp prior to being waived.

Q: What are some interesting facts about you that Brothers may not know? A: While serving in the United States Navy, I was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. During

Alpha Week 2020 Recap

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Alpha Week in 2020 was slightly different than in years past. Nonetheless, the festivities were a success as Brothers were able to engage in a variety of events while doing so in a safe manner. Brother Lord Walthour hosted Alphas on the Range, while Brother Duriel Barnes, Owner of The Chosen Chef, facilitated a virtual cooking class where he prepared the menu items of The First

Banquet. Brothers also partook in a socially distant Brotherhood Smoke at the Invictus Cigar Lounge located in Waldorf, Maryland.
