Presidential Address Brothers, As we conclude the 2020 – 2021 fraternal year, I can honestly say that I am proud of the perseverance, tenacity, and fortitude you Brothers have displayed while doing the work of Alpha during truly unprecedented times. When the fraternal year began, we knew that due to the limitations placed upon us by COVID-19, there would be certain challenges with respect to executing the National Programs and engaging with the community that we had never experienced before. However, in true Alpha fashion, you Brothers did not let that hinder the Chapter’s productivity in any way. In fact, due to the necessity to conduct virtual events, our Go-to-High School, Go-to-College program was extremely successful as we were able to solicit participation from students throughout the entire Tri-County area to include Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s Counties – and even as far as South Carolina. In addition, the Chapter was also able to execute several successful drop-and-go clothing drives and virtual politically centric webinars with local politicians within the community. I am thankful for having been blessed with the opportunity to serve alongside you Brothers as the President of the Sigma Alpha Lambda Chapter and look forward to building upon the work we have done this fraternal year. As always, I invite Alpha Brothers living in Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s Counties to join the Sigma Alpha Lambda Chapter as we continue to hold high the light of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. As you read these pages and become inspired to reconnect with Alpha, you are welcome to visit our website at www.SAL1906.org or email us at info@SAL1906.org for more information.

Message from the Editor Greetings Brothers, Welcome to The Light of Southern Maryland, the official quarterly newsletter of the Sigma Alpha Lambda Chapter (SAL), Key No. 677, of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. This newsletter is distributed to Alpha Brothers of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Alpha Chapters (MAAC) and residents of Southern Maryland to increase the awareness of SAL’s implementation of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.’s national programs, local community service initiatives, and philanthropic efforts facilitated by the Alpha Foundation of Southern Maryland. As I reflect on the 2020 – 2021 fraternal year and all that it has brought upon us, I must say, it has been an absolute honor and privilege to serve as the Associate Editor-to-the-Sphinx. Playing an integral role in the establishment of the first official newsletter for our Chapter since its inception, bestows a great deal of pride upon me. As my first year in this illustrious fraternity concludes, I look forward to working with the Brothers of SAL and our Brothers in Alpha at large as we continue pressing forward to do the work of Alpha – no matter what the circumstances are! We have proved that in any environment – in person or virtual – we have the flexibility and creativity to facilitate programs that best serve the needs of our community. Let us use the summer as a planning period to mobilize, organize, strategize, and recharge so that we can hit the ground running during the next fraternal year. I would like to thank Brothers Kenyatta Graves, Lamar Goodwine, Ryan Eugene, and Jordan Webb for their contributions to The Light of Southern Maryland. This newsletter would not have been successful without your efforts! Brothers, I wish peace, tranquility, love, and prosperity upon you and your families! Continue to stay safe and enjoy your summer. 06’

National Programs A Voteless People is a Hopeless People “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” (VPHP) was initiated as a National Program of Alpha during the 1930s when many African-Americans had the right to vote but were prevented from voting because of poll taxes, threats of reprisal, and lack of education about the voting process. Voter education and registration have remained a dominant focus of this outreach activity for over 65 years. In the 1990s, the focus shifted to include political awareness and empowerment, delivered most frequently through town hall meetings and candidate forums.

Go-to-High School, Go-to-College Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. established the “Go-to-High School, Go-to-College” program in 1922. This program focuses on preparing 9th-12th grade young men to excel in college, develop leadership skills to use in the future, and establish prospective leaders for southern Maryland. The program targets male students, currently enrolled in high school with a desire to GO TO
COLLEGE! Students enrolled in this program are provided with potential scholarship opportunities, attend field trips, and more. For more information, please contact Brother Edward McNeil, Director of Educational Activities, via email at info@SAL1906.org.
College Prep/Career Readiness Seminar On March 16, 2021, the Education Committee facilitated a virtual session with the Alpha Scholars mentees that included a discussion of several key aspects associated with preparing for college and a Q&A panel with a few Brothers of SAL and a special guest who are employed within diverse career fields. Brothers Reverend Dr. James Huntley and Edward McNeil provided the students with an overview of the key requirements and benefits associated with the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and American College Test (ACT) as it relates to their college eligibility. In addition, Brother Duriel Barnes, Owner of The Chosen Chef, Brother Parris Jones, United States Army Recruiter, and Mr. Quentin Olgelsby, IT Service Helpdesk Technician, gave an overview of their respective chosen career fields. They also provided the students with an in depth insight inside the thought process that led them to choosing that particular industry, in addition to the pros and cons of their jobs. Although the Go-to-High School, Go-to-College program is typically focused on post-secondary education, in today’s climate, it is also important to expose our mentees to information critical to their matriculation into the trade workforce in the event they chose not to continue their education in a traditional manner upon graduating from high school. 12

Under 30 Forum The final session of the 2020 – 2021 Virtual Go-to-High School, Go-to-College Program took place on April 20, 2021. The purpose of the Under 30 Forum was to provide the students in attendance with an analysis of the benefits of pursing entrepreneurial opportunities within the tech industry, which is currently underrepresented in the African American community. Brother Jammal Dorsey presented the students with a synopsis of the job descriptions and entry, median, and high level salaries associated
with these positions. In addition, the Under 30 Forum featured two special guests – Mr. Bryant Owens, Senior Product Manager at Stash and Mr. Eric Green, Junior Software Engineer at Howard University and Founder/CEO of Hagl USA. Mr. Owens and Mr. Green provided the mentees with their experiences in the tech industry thus far, while also imparting words of wisdom and recommendations for how they can successfully enter and navigate their way throughout the tech industry.

Virtual Graduation Ceremony with Alpha Scholars and Parents SAL’s Education Committee facilitated a virtual graduation ceremony on May 15, 2021 to acknowledge the mentees currently enrolled in the Go-to-High School, Go-to-College Program, include those students who had been enrolled in the program during their entire high school tenure. Brother Edward McNeil provided the parents with an overview of the myriad of topics that were covered during the sessions for this year’s mentoring program. The mentees were also given time to reflect on their favorite aspect of the mentoring program, while their parents were provided an opportunity to express their sincere gratitude for their children being enrolled in the mentoring program. The positive feedback that the Education Committee received from the mentees and parents spoke volumes to the hard work and dedication that was required to keep the mentees engaged in a virtual environment. At the conclusion of the virtual graduation ceremony, the Brothers of SAL gathered to present the mentees with their Alpha Scholars boxes and certificates of completion. All in all, this year’s Go-to-High School, Go-to-College Program was extremely successful. Of special interest, for the first time in the history of the Chapter, the Education Committee successfully registered five of the mentees to attend the Leadership Develop Institute (LDI).

SAL Tutoring Program Initiative Last quarter, the Brothers of SAL established a free pilot tutoring initiative in an effort to further meet the needs of the Alpha Scholars enrolled in our 2020 – 2021 Virtual Go-to-High School, Go-to-College Program. Tutoring was provided via two 45-minute virtual sessions per week in the following subjects: Local/State/National Government, Spanish, and Foundations of Information Technology. Tutoring in these specific subjects were requested by our Scholars based on the interim report cards they received. Webinar With Maryland Alphas in Government Brother Edsel M. Brown, Jr, Chairman of the Political and Social Action Committee, facilitated a webinar with Brother Calvin Ball – Howard County Executive and Brother Charles E. Sydnor, III – District 44 Maryland State Senate Representative, on March 24, 2021 to discuss pertinent updates regarding the highly anticipated HBCU funding bill that had recently passed thorough the Maryland State Chamber. Brother Sydnor highlighted other noteworthy legislation and the importance of Brothers getting active in their respective communities to hold leadership officials accountable, as well as possibly running for office themselves, if interested.
In addition, Brother Ball provided the Brothers of SAL with an outline of his reelection campaign platform, while emphasizing the importance of having long term goals and ensuring that they be carried out to completion, and discussed the importance of building your personal brand and coalitions. Brother Ball also echoed Brother Sydnor’s call for substantive action and participation. Brother Ball and Brother Sydnor are shining examples of the best that Alpha has to offer the community. While each of them hold significant positions of leadership, there is no doubt that their current accomplishments are only an indicator of how much further in life they will climb.

Adopt-A-Highway Project Clean Up
As proud and active members of the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration Adopt-A-Highway Program, the Brothers of SAL cleaned up the Chapter’s one mile stretch along route 228 on Saturday, April 24, 2021. This was the second highway cleanup that SAL conducted during this fraternal year and for some Brothers, this was the first time they have seen one another since the onset of the pandemic. Community service isn’t something we as Alphas do just to check a box, it also provides an opportunity to spend time with one another while providing relief to the community we are charged with improving.
