Dear Readers, Congratulations to the graduates! We did it! Each of us, sitting in these bleachers, has passed through four years of twists and turns, through moments both mundane and unforgettable, through hardship and happiness. We’ve learned and we’ve grown. Class of 2019, be proud! The words “four years” will never encapsulate the journey. Throughout our time here, we’ve struggled — we poured our blood, sweat and tears into our secondary education. Years worth of attending classes and writing papers felt like an eternity. Yet here we are, left with the hard hitting realization that our first day of high school — September 8, 2015 — felt only yesterday. Today, our time expires. But even though we’ll never again walk back into this building as students, each of you has left a mark here, imprinting a unique ripple in the hearts and minds of your peers. We would like to thank all of our readers for following us on this journey. Thank you for trusting us to inform the community and capture the spirit of the school, and thank you for engaging in the critical dialogue that our community must share. Our readers make our publication journey worthwhile, and we hope that our content has done justice to this community. We’ve covered an array of topics throughout this volume, from juuling to gymnastics, from school jobs to schedules, from curriculums to keypads and everything in between. Volume 35 staff worked tirelessly throughout this year to fulfill the mission of The Roar and provide our readers with top-notch content. To everyone who worked on Volume 35 staff, thank you for making this a community. We filled this year with little moments that brought us together, turning us into a unforgettable, tight-knit group. Thank you for everything — for answering our 1 a.m. phone calls, for relentlessly wrestling with InDesign, for jumping at the first mention of boba, for tearing up the streets of Chicago, for listening to one another during bonding, for caring, for working hard, for loving our paper. We hope your time on The Roar has been memorable. Producing The Roar had difficult moments and we thank the staff much for pushing through. Redesigning pages, deleting paragraphs, rewriting and redrawing can seem tedious at times, but we are so proud of Volume 35. We hope our staff has found a passion within Roar. To the Class of 2019, we hope we have all found passions during our time at South, and that going forward, we will continue to create communities and find fulfillment within them. Saying goodbye to The Roar isn’t easy. It has been an integral part of high school for us, but we have the assurance that we are leaving the paper in capable hands. Volume 36, you have shown us incredible work so far. We hope the paper continues to bring you joy and pride. Best Wishes, Catherine Granfield and Ilan Rotberg Volume 35 Editors-in-Chief

You know you’re in the

class of 2019

1.

when ...

A different classmate steals your parking spot each day

2.

You hoped every day would be a snowday, and got only one day off

3.

You mourned Netflix and HBO when the school network blocked them

4.

You smiled at a NSHS Compliment thrown your way

5.

You were forbidden from decorating your graduation cap

6.

You saw the legendary campus turkey

7.

You participated in not just one, but two, lip dubs

8.

You ran like hell when the police showed up at Powderpuff

9.

You didn’t know what the senior prank would be until it happened

10. 11.

You passed junior year without thinking of the L Bench

You’ve participated in more fire drills than class discussions

Many thanks to all the families who donate their time and money to the Newton South High School PTSO.

With your help: - We appreciated our wonderful staff with 3 coffees, 1 breakfast and 1 lunch. This year, we also provided the faculty with snacks before the evening parent-teacher conferences - We raised funds to make the library more functional and comfortable - We hosted 5 information sessions for incoming parents and 10 parent coffees - We put your PTSO dollars to work directly in the classroom through grants to departments and teachers - We organized an awesomely fun and safe SouthFest - We surprised the students with treats several times during the year to give them a boost

senior cup finalists Every year, members of the graduating class nominate classmates who show excellence in service, leadership and scholarship for the senior cup. Faculty will announce two winners during the graduation ceremony.

Maddy Epstein “Whether it be in school or outside, Maddy is always an upstanding person. She cares about doing the right thing and both her peers and teachers respect her for that. She will always reach a helping hand and not just to her friends, but to strangers as well.” -Jack Tumpowsky, ‘19 “Whether it be by helping people or just bringing a smile to their face with her sense of humor, she is constantly making people feel good and happy. Maddy adds a vibrant and different perspective to the South community. She is a part of more clubs than I can name and has had a leadership role in most of them. Her varying interests make her able to connect with a wide range of members in the South community and give her a unique perspective on how to build a community and better any kind of club or group.” -Hannah Hepner, ‘19

Isabelle Gloria

Jay Garg “Jay has personally been responsible for a lot of my growth throughout high school. Some of my best qualities I’ve learned from Jay. He’s taught me how to cheer people up, how to treat strangers and how to spontaneously think of nice things to do for other people. Jay is amazing at brightening his classmates’ days with a joke and a goofy laugh or just a smile and a hug.” -Joel Metcalf, ‘19 “I often see him participate in little acts of kindness like dropping coins in the meters of other people’s cars because they’re about to run out of time, or go out of his way to comfort and talk to a random person he sees looking sad on a bench in the middle of Cambridge. He always goes out of his way to try to make other people’s days better. He does very well in school and extracurricular activities, yet he still remains humble.” -Gaby Lewis, ‘19

Yarden Levy

“Izzy is kind, hardworking, caring, friendly, and an all around amazing friend. I’ve watched her work hard in tech, in school and in her friendships since freshman year. She’s so kind and caring - she’s driven me home countless times and been my shoulder to cry on. I love her so much and she deserves the world.” -Darby Wilson, ‘19

“Yarden is always trying to help other people, and work together with them. He likes working in team as opposed to working by himself and bringing that team to success. He’ll never be selfish or mean because he genuinely likes to be with other people. Yarden is a very smart guy who tries to bring the community together and simply get everyone to have a good time. He always is trying brighten anyone and everyone’s day with a joke.” -Alon Stein, ‘19

“Izzy is genuinely eager to help everyone, from her closest friends to complete strangers. She will always place other’s need above her own. She has not only helped design and create amazing sets for a whole bunch of shows, but also a kind community that has been a safe space for many students.” -Alice Zilberberg, ‘19

The best way I can demonstrate Yarden’s virtuous character is through a story. I remember when my cat died due to health complications, and Yarden would come to my house every day after school and pretend to be my cat, curling up and purring in my lap. Although this wasn’t a permanent solution, it temporarily filled the cat shaped hole in my heart and showed how truly selfless and noble a friend could be. From that moment on, I’ve looked up to Yarden as a moral compass. -Ben Romanow, ‘19

Nayleth LopezLopez

Maia Madison

“South would be extremely different without Nayleth Lopez. Other than her many talents and academic achievements, Nayleth’s unique contributions are her forte for public speaking, ability to emphasize with many people, her interpersonal skills and ability to convey her experience as a minority student. She is constantly smiling and is always willing to help out people, even strangers. It is very uncomfortable and nerve racking to have to represent your background and ethnicity, especially in a predominantly white environment. She is still fearless and has a superb ability to know when she needs to contribute to provide an uncommon perspective.” -Ross Halpern, ‘19

“Hardworking and dedicated are just a few words I would use to describe Maia. She is as close to the perfect student as I can imagine. Whenever I look over at Maia in class, she is always diligently doing her classwork or taking notes. In Yearbook, she takes on a huge responsibility without complaint. She shoulders much of the weight and sacrifices so much of her free time to pick up the slack from others. On the field, she transforms from a reserved student into a fierce competitor, leading her team by example. Maia always puts her full effort into everything she does and exemplifies virtuous character.” -Langston Lee, ‘19

“Nayleth is the kindest person I have ever met. She is always going out of her way to help out or greet others, and she always takes the time to give everyone attention. Nayleth is a ray of sunshine in the South community. She is friends with literally everyone, and she serves as one of the strongest leaders in the South community.” -Zoe McCreary, ‘19

“Maia cares a lot about her work and learning. Her standards are high for everything she does. Even though she’s quiet, she appreciates her friends. She does not make rash decisions.” -Annie Lee-Hassett, ‘19

Allie Riklin “Allie has always been someone who goes above and beyond for her friends and family, and she always puts other’s needs before her own. She is one of the most caring, kind, responsible and intelligent people I know, and I wouldn’t be the person I am today without her. When I got a flat tire at school, she used her free block to change it by herself while I was in class. She has gone out of her way countless times, and I think that goes to show how selfless she is.” -Zhanna Sheyner, ‘19 “She leads through her organization, thoughtfulness and people want to follow her because of her passion and enthusiasm for everything she does. Allie is also one of the most driven people that I’ve ever known. She wants to achieve big things, and she wants others around her to as well. Allie puts her whole heart into everything she does and it’s truly inspiring, even when things don’t go well, she has a strong resilience and perseveres through everything thrown at her. Allie adds so much to the South community. Her eagerness to take on leadership roles is so important to her character as a whole. She wants to help others succeed while also not forgetting about her own success, which is a hard thing to balance. She genuinely cares about everyone around her and everything that she puts her mind to.” -Sarah Meyer, ‘19

Veer Sawnhey “Veer is always looking out for those around him. After SASA’s annual Holi celebration, Veer stayed for 40 minutes to make sure that all the freshman who attended were accounted for and had rides home. On a normal day, Veer does this same thing for his peers, driving home an average of three people most days. I admire his contributions to the Newton South community as a member of Class Office. I’ll never forget when Veer announced that he was running for Vice President instead of President, as most class officers do; the name Veep still follows him around school. Finally, as a president of SASA, and debate team leader, Veer makes a difference in the school community, leading discussions to help his peers better understand the world around them.” -Kiran Maypole, ‘19 “Veer exemplifies virtuous character because of how he treats other people. Veer is always friendly, making sure everyone is doing alright and making people laugh. He really cares about his friends. Veer makes South feel a little smaller. Every time he’s in the library, he walks around to every person he knows and daps them up or chats with them for a little. His voice is a fun and friendly presence around the halls. Veer makes people around him feel welcomed.” -Tomer Bonshtein, ‘19
