SHOUT OUT TO
LOUD MOUTH COFFEE
Straight up, soundly sourced, masterfully roasted coffee
...HIT THE HIGH NOTES
Morag Stuart & Emma Warren
Spring is most definitely on its way. The evenings are finally getting lighter - great for dog walking after work and appreciating the daylight hours creeping back in. While we both enjoy cozy evenings in front of the fire and have continued to adorn all our home surfaces with fairy lights, it’s time to embrace our favourite season. We have been enjoying the beautiful sunshine which brings so much hope after the grey coldness of winter. That magic moment when the evening light just glows everywhere…Plans are being made, people and plants are emerging from their winter hibernation. Everything seems more possible in Spring.
We are hopeful for Frome and all the wonderful independent businesses that we are so very lucky to have here. We all need to make sure we continue to support and use them, so we don’t lose them. It’s so sad to see pub Landlords closing up early due to lack of custom and we’re definitely trying to change our regular shopping routines. We were loitering and chatting on Cheap Street recently (as we often are!) and had such positive conversations with shop
owners. Hannah from Ramshack inspired us to try to eat in or out each week in Frome, supporting different restaurants, takeaways and home deliveries each time. It’s brilliant and we’re breaking comfortable habits, whilst having something to really look forward to. It’s time to try that place you keep walking past and have always meant to try ‘one day’.
“it is International Women’s Day after all”
February can often be a strange month. Teenagers in our houses seem to have disappeared even more, screens are a blessing and a curse, family country walks are almost a thing of the past. Friends tell us these come back, but in the meantime, we’ve decided to focus on celebrating all our fabulous friends and the inspiring women around the town - it is International Women’s Day after all. Every day, we’re impressed with the energy, positivity and genuine compassion shown by you all. There is no other place we’d rather be.

Since last summer, seven artists local to Frome have been supporting seven Ukrainian artists, in exile in Europe or currently living in Ukraine. They meet regularly on zoom, share meaningful and supportive dialogue through personal artwork onto a virtual platform. The project culminates in an exhibition of prints of original works for sale, aiming to develop a deeper understanding within local, regional, national and international communities.

Definitely Getting There
Poet, novelist, reviewer and all-round culture vulture Crysse Morrison was a Frome powerhouse. Hugely beloved and revered for both her writing and her championing of our wonderful town, her recent death was met with an outpouring of sadness but also a determination to celebrate all that she was. Crysse was writing to the last, and her posthumous collection of poetry ‘Definitely Getting There’ is a moving testament to her humour, bravery and skill. To honour Crysse, a new prize for poetry has been established and will run as part of this year’s Frome Festival in July. Keep your eyes peeled for more details.

The Unravelling Wilburys
Cheese & Grain, 17th March, 7.30pm, £18 adv
The Unravelling Wilburys are Thumper, Blind Melon, Sticky Willy, Walter and Rev. Honky Tonk. In a former guise as top Beatles project, Sgt Pepper’s Only Dart Board Band, (The Flab Five), they toured for over 20 years playing at UK and USA festivals, and at theatres and music venues across Europe and the UK.
Their latest tongue-in-cheek shows feature the boys take on their songs being (allegedly) usurped by The Traveling Wilburys back in the late 1980s at Nashville, Tennessee. The Unravelling Wilburys now “steal back what is rightfully theirs” and also ‘borrow’ some choice solo songs from Messrs Dylan, Lynne, Orbison, Harrison and Petty.

America in Crisis
American Museum, 11th March to 4th July
America in Crisis will bring together over 80 works from 39 leading American photographers including Bruce Davidson, Kris Graves and Sheila Pree Bright, exploring social change in the US during the 1960s and today. America in Crisis was originally a groundbreaking Magnum Photos project, conceived in 1969 to assess the state of the nation. The group project turned a critical eye on the US at a time of great social, political and cultural change. In 2022, Saatchi Gallery curated a revised exhibition, creating a unique dialogue between the original historical photographs and new works produced in 2020 by diverse contemporary practitioners, during another tumultuous time in America.
The Museum reopens on 11th March with a full programme of spring events, with highlights including Mother’s Day, the Claridge lecture with Professor Sarah Churchwell, family fun for Easter school holidays, new monthly yoga & wellbeing workshops and much more.
Tuesday to Sunday, 10am-5pm (last entry at 4pm)

LOUD MOUTH SO MUCH TO SHOUT ABOUT
You may have seen their bold bags of beans popping up around Frome and South West, and now Loud Mouth Coffee Roasters have opened the doors of their roastery on Frome Commerce Park so that everyone can see where the magic happens.
Created back in 2018 to supply The River House in Frome with their very own, unique blend, Loud Mouth aims to bring specialty coffee to a wider market through affordability, and including those who might otherwise be put off by the daunting terminology of the industry. In their own words, this is ‘Straight up, soundly sourced, masterfully roasted, bang tidy brews from our gobby selves’.
In the summer of 2020, when the uncertainty of COVID was all around, Loud Mouth took the bold move to expand its operation and move to a larger unit on Frome Commerce Park. Fast forward almost 3 years, and their headquarters are now home to the coffee roasters and a café, open to all employees and visitors of the trading estate.
A Fromie born business, Loud Mouth have some exciting new plans for 2023 as they look to expand their wholesale operation, popping up at coffee festivals all over the country, to get Loud Mouth beans in cafes and coffee shops UK wide. They’ll also be growing the café at the Commerce Park, and eventually breaking onto the festival scene with a touring coffee van.
‘Straight up, soundly sourced, masterfully roasted, bang tidy brews from our gobby selves’.
For those wanting to dip their toes into the world of speciality coffee, Loud Mouth have created hand picked selection boxes, giving you four different coffees to try in order to get to grips with the fabulous flavours of beans from around the world. Choose from their blends or single origins, and request either whole bean or ground to your preference, for easy home brewing.
With a focus on sustainability, all Loud Mouth coffee comes in biodegradable or recycled packaging. And for those looking to use Loud Mouth in a commercial capacity, reusable 5kg tubs are available for offices, cafes, bars and restaurants. Just get in touch to find out more about the discounted wholesale prices or what would be best suited to your needs.
If you’re eager to get your hands on their belter beans you can do so online at www.loudmouthcoffee.com or see them in person at Loud Mouth’s roastery & coffee shop and grab your beans at source. The helpful team are on hand to inform you of their coffee offerings and find the perfect gifts for the discerning coffee lovers in your life!

EMPOWERING YOUNG WOMEN WITH RITES FOR
GIRLS
Girls Journeying Together (GJT) is a programme for girls aged 10-12 that has been developed by Rites for Girls - a nonprofit organisation which aims to inspire and empower girls using circle based mentorship.
“We meet monthly over a year to delve into the changes that puberty brings, explore feelings and grow their self-confidence as they head into adolescence. The girls build a community where they can trust each other enough to share their innermost fears and heartfelt hopes while being guided by a mentor who cares deeply” said Steph, a local Frome facilitator.
Mothers also gain valuable support from bringing their daughters to Girls Journeying Together. “It can feel like it is harder to stay in touch with what is happening in our children’s lives as they become more independent and there are fewer chances for parents to give and receive support like when they are little” said Frome GJT mentor Sophy Griffiths, “so I’m really glad that we can offer support to mums too.”

MILK ON THE MOOVE
from Tytherington Milk station
On the outskirts of Frome, Tytherington Milk Station is located on the farmgate at Bullsbridge Farm in the village of Tytherington. This traditional family-run dairy farm has been home to the Salmon family for over 80 years. Andy Salmon has lived at the farm his whole life and is the third generation of the family. Andy and his wife Emma wanted to sell milk directly from the farm and this is how the idea of the Milk Station was born in 2017.
A big shout out...
to our amazing local coffee shops and pubs who have made the switch. When you have a coffee at these places you know they are using high quality milk from a local dairy farm. Not only are they supporting local but also reducing their plastic usage. It’s a win win, what are you waiting for…

The vending machine on the farm gate is open daily where you can dispense your own milk direct into a lovely reusable one litre Tytherington Milk Station glass bottle or you can bring your own container.
The farm is home to a happy healthy herd of 240 Holstein Friesian dairy cows which are milked twice a day to produce the delicious milk that is sold via vending machines. Andy and his family work hard to ensure that the cows receive the highest level of care and welfare. We love their commitment to local businesses and the constant innovation of new products and ideas, including also stocking cheese, cookie pies, seasonal milkshakes and award-winning eggs. With the ‘ping’ of a contactless payment and a ‘tap’ of a button, proper milk is all yours to enjoy!

BY OUR RESIDENT FOODIE KATIE FRASERAs children, a family favourite was Beans Under Toast. Dad would make a rich tomato sauce with plenty of garlic and dried oregano, add a tin of Cannellini Beans, and top with breadcrumbs from a leftover crust. And a sprinkle of cheese. I’ve recently returned to the dish with my own children who love it. Not just the food, but the story of its beginnings.
I came across this slightly more sophisticated version lately and thought it would be a good one to share. It uses rosemary as the seasoning herb which suits as we, and many, have a large, spindly plant in the garden that is rarely used. Soft herbs are less successful.
This is great for midweek suppers, big sharing lunches with friends or batch cooking. It freezes and heats very easily. Super simple, healthy, delicious and costs under £1 per portion. Winner.
For 2-3 adult servings:
. Olive oil
. 1 large onion, chopped
. 6 garlic cloves, finely chopped
. 2 tsp rosemary, chopped
. 1 tsp chilli flakes
. 400g can Cannellini beans
. 400g can chopped tomatoes
. Lemon zest to serve
. Parsley to garnish (optional)
Soften onion in a good glug of olive oil before adding garlic, rosemary and chilli. Continue to fry gently until onions start to brown. Add chopped toms, beans, 150ml water, and a healthy pinch of salt, and simmer slowly for 20 ish minutes. Add a splash of water or two more if needed. Once the sauce is reduced and the beans have softened, taking on the flavor of the liquor, you’re good to go. Plate up and garnish with a good amount of lemon zest, and parsley if you’re using. Serve with a thick piece of toast, brown rice or couscous.

female made wines
sarah helliwell, 8 stony streetWe are fast approaching International Women’s day 2023 and less than 20% of winemakers across the world are female, this number is improving in bounds each year but there is still some way to go. Numerous studies have now concluded that women are significantly more likely to be ‘Super tasters’ than men and more taste buds to boot!
All the more reason to celebrate the amazing talents of some of these pioneering women with a selection of their delicious wines, perfect for Mother’s day feasts.
Bordeaux Blanc 2019, Bordeaux, France | £18.55
Winemaker Estelle Roumage steers this modern winery with precision, this is a classy and elegant white Bordeaux, full of ripe peach and zingy lemon peel freshness, I love this wine with the spring time flavours of wild garlic and leeks and roast chicken.
AliceRed Reserve 2020
Douro, Portugal | £15.00
Sisters Luisa and Maria are the 5th generation to run this house in the Duoro Valley, made with traditional Portuguese Varietals, this is full bodied, unctuous and ripe with a touch of smoke. A dream with roasted lamb or a rich vegetable tagine.
MY FROME
I probably visit Rye Bakery about three times a week with my toddler. We’re always made to feel so welcome (however many pastry crumbs we leave in our wake) and my son loves to eat their croissants and toddle about inside the café as if he owns the place. He can’t even say his own name yet but he can say ‘Rye’ - that’s how much he loves it there.
We’re so lucky in Frome to have the wonderful Hunting Raven Books. I couldn’t have moved to a town without a bookshop and this fabulous indie one has friendly staff who are great at giving recommendations.
As a fan of vintage fashion I love The Dandy Lion and Poot Emporium as places to rummage and always find treasure. And The Golden Goose and Figgins are both amazing for gifts and cards - no matter who I need to buy for I always find something in either of these places.
I grew up down the road in Gillingham, so have been coming to Frome for years to visit. I lived in London for many years but when I started thinking about starting a family I knew I wanted to come back home. Frome felt the perfect fit as my family are nearby and the town has everything
My favourite thing about Frome is the sense of community. Everyone seems to know everyone and there’s a real sense of looking out for one another. I’ve met so many people since moving here and have felt so welcomed. When I walk around town now I usually bump into someone I know and it’s that sense of connection that is so special, especially for me as a new mum in a new town. Becoming a new parent can be lonely but I never feel lonely in Frome.
My perfect day in Frome would start with breakfast at the River House , followed by a day of pottering about the shops, even better if it’s a Frome Independent day and I can also check out the buzzy mix of stallholders. Maybe an afternoon film at the Westway followed by a glass of wine at Eight Stony Street, looking down the hill out the lovely big window there and feeling very lucky to call this town my home. And if there’s time I’d also squeeze in a burger at The Griffin with friends, my favourite spot for a cosy catch up.
“the window seat at Moo and Two is my favourite place in town for a hot drink”
In terms of food and drink I love Eight Stony Street for wine and charcuterie (or pizza), The High Pavement for delicious tapas and of course Burrito Boi for when only a hearty burrito and frozen margarita will do. And the window seat at Moo and Two is my favourite place in town for a hot drink and some excellent people (and dog) watching.
My new book The Vintage Shop of Second Chances (set here in Frome!) has just published in hardback. It tells the story of a woman setting up a new vintage shop in Frome. The shop is fictional but very much inspired by real Frome businesses like The Dandy Lion and Deadly is the Female. There’s also a café next door inspired by Moo and Two. I wanted to capture the sense of community and creativity in Frome in this book and hope that readers enjoy it!
All my books are available to buy at the wonderful Hunting Raven (and online). I’m on social media at @ libbypagewrites and you can find me on Substack too at libbypage.substack.com
