he silence was eerie, it felt like stepping into a futuristic sci-fi movie. Strangers moved around, swiftly and silently, avoiding eye contact and minimising interactions. There were occasional beeps, a rustling of bags, then everyone disappeared into the night. Our first and last venture into an Amazon Fresh contactless store was everything we feared. Thankfully, the next morning we woke up in our gorgeous, friendly, bustling community market town and normal service was resumed. Today we wandered from café to gift shop, hardware store to fabric shop, enjoying clothing bargains and stationery gems. The trading estates sorted all those long overdue household chores and repairs, then we happily whiled away the rest of the afternoon spending recent vouchers at the book shop and on beauty treatments. The best bit about the whole day was, of course, talking to people. Conversations are good for our mental health, and these connections undoubtedly transform our days. Is there anything as simple and rewarding as knowing shopkeepers by name?

Our friends, neighbours and their families are all throwing everything into making their small businesses work. Their livelihood literally depends on us all. Combine the impact of our ethical and environmental choices, and we can all be winners by changing our daily and weekly habits; re-fill, repurpose, shop, talk and wander locally. Our pages this month are full of gift ideas for this festive season - we think it’s the biggest Shop Local guide ever, there is so much to choose from and inspire every budget. We want to celebrate each and every business in town. Please don’t let the machines take over just yet. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Memorial Theatre, 28th Dec - 3rd Jan, £15 This year Frome Musical Theatre Company will be performing one of the greatest fairy tale pantomimes of all time: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The award-winning musical theatre company performed their first pantomime in 1979 and have attracted sellout audiences ever since. The shows are enormous fun, with larger-than-life characters, lots of slapstick humour, bright costumes, big musical numbers and dazzling sets and effects. The large cast is one of the most popular and friendly groups in Frome. They are always looking for new members, both on and off stage. The company also offers the opportunity for young people in school years 3 through to 11 to gain experience in musical theatre through their youth group, Spellbound. Their recent shows have included The Little Mermaid, Bugsy Malone, BLITZ!, Seussical and Cats. www.fromemtc.co.uk

ELF Merlin Theatre Productions 7th - 16th Dec, £14 Buddy, a young orphan, mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf is raised unaware that he is actually a human, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh reality that his father is on the naughty list, and his stepbrother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. Based on the cherished 2003 New Line Cinema hit, this modern-day classic Christmas musical is sure to make everyone embrace their inner elf. After all, the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear. www.merlintheatre.co.uk

Breathing new life into unique heirlooms

ave you ever wondered what to do with your small collection of unworn jewellery that sits in your jewellery box gathering dust? Maybe you’ve been gifted an heirloom piece of jewellery that isn’t to your taste but holds great sentimental value. Well, lucky for you, Josie Mitchell Jewellery specialises in re-modelling unworn jewellery. By carefully removing the stones and melting down the metal, Josie works one-to-one with her customers to re-imagine their jewels into something that reflects who they are as an individual. Josie creates exquisitely detailed jewellery inspired by the ocean and unburied treasure, each piece full of delicate details and elements of the human touch that capture the essence of the wearer and act as a celebration of perfectly imperfect forms found in nature. Mental health and the connection of the ocean is a huge inspiration behind Josie’s work. Her pieces are mindfully designed to feel tactile and effortless, as though they become a part of your skin, always working with your body and never against it.

“My jewellery is inspired by the ocean and organic textures reflected from the nature that surrounds us...” Repurposing your own silver and gold jewellery is the most sustainable option when buying jewellery as it takes the pressures off mining for raw materials. As a small business with limited resources, Josie is mindful to make choices towards the most sustainable options that align with her strong ethos to care for people and planet simultaneously. “Jewellery is a window into our lives and has the power to transform the way we feel, which is why I believe it is so important to invest in jewellery that tells your story as well as making you feel amazing.”

“I can see the power our jewellery can have towards our mental health and the anxieties of everyday life. My jewellery is inspired by the ocean and organic textures reflected from the nature that surrounds us, helping to connect us to a deeper sense of wholeness.” If you are looking for the perfect alternative engagement ring, or wanting to re-model your unworn jewellery, then go and pay Josie a visit at the Iron Gates in town (next to M&S) or get in touch with her via email josiemitchelljewellery@gmail.com josiemitchell.jewellery Josie Mitchell Jewellery www.josiemitchelljewellery.com

our years ago, Frome was fortunate to get its first dedicated re-fill store, a carefully curated selection of wholefoods, household goods and personal care products. The owners, Cat, Oli and Sophie, are passionate about giving the local community the chance to buy ethical products without the need for plastic. Step inside this Aladdin’s cave of inspiration and take the first step to changing your weekly shopping habits.

“Even if you only refill one item, you are doing your part to help in the fight against plastic pollution” 4 Bath Street, Frome, BA11 1DH Mon - Sat: 9.15am - 5pm | www.denudestore.co.uk denudefrome |

All the products in store are available for dispensing into your own containers or are provided with minimal, recyclable packaging. Prices are kept as low as they can possibly be without the business making a loss. Pop in and learn more about Zero Waste living and how to reduce your individual impact on the environment. You can also check the regularly updated stock list online, so you can plan your shopping. Why not challenge your friends and neighbours, buy just one thing in town this week? “Our goal is simple: we want to help support the local community to take small steps towards living more sustainably.” 36

MY FROME

I once performed in an adapted version of Swan Lake at a V-VIP wedding in Hilton’s Hyde Park Hotel (but sworn to secrecy on whose wedding of course!)

© Dave Merritt Creative

I’m reading ‘Three Stripes South’, a book written by our close friend and local writer, Bex Band. I’m currently listening to The Ultimate Dance Business Podcast, by Deborah Laws, another incredible woman who has built her amazing online empire through coaching dance studio owners in business.

Principal, Tri.Art Dance Academy

I grew up in Frome and after a brief dancing career I decided to return home and set up a Dance and Performing Arts Academy with business partner, Claudia Pepler.

Frome has SO much talent, from those in the arts industry to local entrepreneurs, writers, foodies and many more besides. I love that there is space and support for all these individuals to flourish. I set up Tri.Art at the age of 24 and it has grown into not just a successful business, but also a home for our teachers and students to continue to add to this pool of fantastic talent. We also provide studio space for local bands to rehearse, alongside adult wellbeing and fitness classes.

Frome is rich in culture and has always been forward thinking. I have a pre-schooler and a baby, and the town is perfect for raising a family. This amazing community has so many platforms for support, entertainment and for meeting like-minded parents. It is the people in Frome that make Frome! My perfect day would be… A walk along Rodden Meadow, into town for coffee and a cinnamon bun at Projects Café, followed by a good ‘mooch’ up St Catherine’s and Catherine Hill (where I could easily spend all day buying gifts!), lunch would be a takeout from Nook, and then another coffee from Frama whilst my little boy dips his toes in Cheap Street leat (which I loved doing as a child). The afternoon would be spent in my studio with my amazing team and wonderful students, followed by an evening at Westway Cinema, or at the Merlin or Memorial Theatre.

My Frome

I am so lucky to have such an amazing team working for Tri.Art; a parent volunteer recently said to me “You haven’t created a village here, you’ve created a whole town.” That was such a proud moment for me. www.tri-art.co.uk tri.arttheatreschool@gmail.com © Dave Merritt Creative

F z W

We always have multiple projects on the go at Tri.Art. I am particularly proud of a new SEN class that I am developing, and a Boys Ballet Club for male pre-vocational dancers. We are all passionate about providing a safe and creative space for everyone to enjoy dance and performing arts.

AMY MORAGN-BELL

Because Frome has so many brilliant ones, I’m actually a bit of a café hopper! The River House, Rye, Rise, Moo and Two for example. Last year, we did all of our Christmas shopping in Frome from all the amazing independent shops and the Independent Market.
