Well, the summer isn’t turning out quite how we hoped so far. But at least we can now start looking forward to autumn. Do any other fully grown adults still feel like they should be buying new exercise books, pens and maths sets at this time of year? Nostalgia always seems to kick in around the start of a fresh educational year. While some of us are sending our offspring off to nursery, school and more overwhelmingly university, or perhaps signing up to Frome Community Education courses, we can also look forward to everything else autumn has to bring. Cut to montage of kicking autumn leaves in Victoria Park, drinking pumpkin lattes, and friends running screaming from a misfiring roman candle at your back garden firework display.

While it does feel like the end of something, with summer drawing to a close, there is also so much to look forward to. September is a great month in Frome. We have the wondrous carnival, an accidental book festival, the popular Cheese Show, our fabulous Frome Independent with our cover stars, the Newt, and the Cheese & Grain celebrating 25 years. You can also sign up to the Frome Art School or get involved with Gardening Together’s pop-up allotments, to name but a few of the amazing events this wonderful community has to offer.
Autumn is also a great time for pub walks and trying out some of the great eating and drinking establishments in our surrounding villages. That’s what we will be doing.

Everyone Needs Pockets is hosting the Sustainable Fashion Week Hub in Frome - part of a national movement that brings communities together to take action on the ‘ReWear Revolution’. Everyone Needs Pockets, working with Green and Healthy Frome and Edventure’s Future Shed, are taking action on sustainable fashion with lots of inspiring events on Saturday 30th September, from a Stitch it Don’t Ditch it event to a Fix Your Clothes session, a clothes swap and an indigo dyeing workshop. On Sunday 1st October, there’s a special film screening of Fashion Reimagined at the Town Hall, plus the South West England Fibreshed are down at the Frome Independent with demos. Over the weekend, a shop window display movement through the town highlights the importance of secondhand clothing and sustainability.

Established in 1926, Frome Carnival is one of those unmissable events in the Frome Calendar. Part of the Wessex circuit which includes Bridgwater, Shepton and Glastonbury, the Somerset carnivals are highly regarded as among the largest illuminated processions in the world.
The carnival carts are designed and built by dedicated carnival clubs around the West Country. These clubs have many members who raise money throughout the year, and they work relentlessly to achieve the spectacular carnival entries. Each club’s entry then takes part in the carnival parade along with many other entries, putting on a show for the public, and competing with each other to impress the judges.
Frome Carnival is a registered charity, supporting individuals, organisations and good causes in the local area, and it needs support in order to continue. Running costs and expenses have all increased, making it more challenging to keep going. There are several fundraising events to get involved with: Bingo at the Football Club on 4th September and a Duck Race on 1st October. The event is free, but Frome Carnival counts on their bucket collections on the day so start collecting spare change now.

Tina of Hunting Raven explains the origins of this festival “...the offer of events from some seriously wonderful authors and publishers kept on flooding in, and we kept on saying yes. And, as a result, we have accidentally curated a truly magical, impromptu book festival this September. It seemed only right to call it The Accidental Book Festival!” says Tina. “We hope for the Frome Lit Fest to return properly in future years, complete with a fun-packed kids’ element. But this ‘mini-fest’ for adults will help bridge that space until such time.”
The Accidental Book Festival runs from the 7th to the 26th September, with seven beautifully balanced and totally absorbing events on the programme, spanning fiction, memoir, nature writing, travel and much more – with award-winning and critically acclaimed authors on the list. Events are held in various venues across the town.

Multi award winner Jungle DJ and producer DJ Hybrid, has been a firm fixture on the scene for well over a decade, and is soon to be making his 23 debut! He’s the founder of Deep in the Jungle records, and releases on some of the UK Jungle scene’s most integral record labels, including Ram Records, Jungle Cakes and Born on Road.
Also in September, Kid Hyena - a musical culture clash formed on the backstreets of Barcelona now based in the UK. Breaking boundaries of genre with the urban folk sounds of foot stompin’ singalong tunes, fiery percussion, tap dance beats, double bass and a bundle of positive vibes!

Frome Art School (Formerly Bat Print studios) is a fabulous resource for artists of all disciplines in Frome. The beautiful studio and equipment is available to members on a 24 hour 7 days a week basis for just £45 per month. The Art school runs workshops for adults as well as Saturday, after school and holiday workshops for kids. The new creative team at Frome Art School are brimming with new ideas to support artists in Frome - one particular idea is to reach out to 16-18 year olds to help expand their art portfolios.

Pauline Scott-Garrett began a research-based residency at the Whittox Gallery, to undertake an archival search of documents and photographs of people fleeing danger and religious persecution. This research has led to the use of images to evoke, rather than depict, a human presence within the work. The exhibition invites us to reflect on the sea journeys undertaken by so many to reach a place of safety. Adopting a somewhat sombre tone, with colours like pink, pewter or pale green, these works suggest an otherness and gently reflect an

Local cultural hub Makers’ Yard are launching a brand new pop-up artist market this summer entitled ‘Yard Sale’. After the success of their Christmas markets, they will now be hosting a summer version with covered designer-maker stalls in their community yard and smaller tables in their event space for local artists and designers. Alongside the prints, jewellery, ceramics, homewares and other gifts that will be for sale, there will also be craft beer from Palmers Street Bottle, cocktails from Retribution Distilling Co and street food by Sauce. This popular annual charity fundraising abseil event will be the charity’s highest to date (160ft) and the first time that this iconic historical venue will be open to public abseiling courtesy of the National Trust. Brave fundraisers will climb the tower’s 205 steps and descend from the top of this iconic monument dressed as their favourite historical figures. Before touching down at the base of the tower, they will be able to savour breathtaking views across the surrounding counties.

September is the most bountiful month at The Newt in Somerset. A special time of year on the estate calendar, harvest is when they take the opportunity to reconnect with their estate’s long farming heritage, showcase the work of their gardeners and gather members to celebrate this abundant time of year.
“It’s a great time for produce,” says David Rowley, Head of Productive Growing. “We’ve had an entire season’s worth of growing time before this large abundance of crops, which we have to harvest before the first frosts.

“Our job at Avalon Farm is turning sunshine into plants,” he adds, “and providing something that people want to eat through our restaurants and various outlets, including the online store, even the staff canteen. It’s an amazing closed loop.”
David’s passionate about developing his team and teaching as many people as possible to produce pesticide-free crops in order to build food trust and skills. “Eventually I’m going to be too old to
grow my own vegetables, so I want the younger generations to be able to grow them for me.” The team aren’t afraid to experiment with unique varietals –the likes of Uchiki Kuri winter squash and Japanese turnips thrive at their Somerset market garden –and growing techniques to ensure a technicolour of produce. It’s an ethos that spreads across the Newt’s food production. Using the land and celebrating the seasons, but doing things a little differently, letting the team of growers, farmers, bakers, butchers, chefs and cheesemakers be creative with food that doesn’t just taste delicious, but ignites the imagination.
Come September, the edible and market gardens are bursting with basil, beetroots, Swiss chard, courgettes, vibrant patty pan squash and David’s favourite pinstripe aubergine, ripe for the picking for shops and menus. Combining David’s expertise with hydroponic farming practices, the new glasshouse is currently bursting with tomatoes; it allows the team to grow nutritious fruits and vegetables for nine months of the year, in a fully customisable climate powered by solar and biomass.
For the first time, the team is bringing a taste of the estate spoils to The Frome Independent Market on 3 September. Visitors to the market will find the Newt’s pop-up stall near the flea market brimming with the best of the season alongside fresh goodies from the estate’s very own bakery – including signature favourite, Apple Waste Sourdough. There will be special offers just for market goers, a children’s activity and the opportunity to chat to the team, discovering more about Newt membership and its ever-growing list of perks.
In the spirit of coming together during this month of plenty, they’re also celebrating on the estate with their popular Deep South Somerset Harvest Weekend and Harvest Supper over the 23rd –24th September. Expect a proper knees-up in the gardens, with music and BBQ fare fresh from the veg patch, inspired by the flavours of the Deep South.

The Garden Café, now a takeaway, and The Shop Next Door, are both well known for providing an innovative range of natural and organic produce as well as a strong commitment to sustainability. The latest innovative venture is a collaboration with Agriton UK - the leading supplier of effective micro-organisms (EM). EM is a combination of good bacteria that can be used to improve soil health, water quality and plant growth. It can also be used to help balance your own health and your pet’s, as well as reducing food waste.
The Garden Café stocks several EM products, for example the Bokashi buckets are a different way of composting which uses a fermentation processinstead of food decomposing, it is pickled. This helps preserve organic matter, kills pathogens and reduces greenhouse gases. Another product stocked by the Garden Café is ‘Wipe and Clean’, which is a unique and completely natural detergent. Vallis Farm is an innovative project designed to serve the community of Frome. A farm, market garden, forest garden, glamping site and centre for learning, all with biodiversity at the centre of everything they do. They offer rental spaces for workshops and events as well as providing a centre for learning, with everything from forest schools to scything! You can even stay in one of their beautiful rooms or shepherds huts. The land is farmed with nature-friendly principles, using a “no-dig” technique to provide weekly boxes of delicious, fresh vegetables to the people of Frome. In this age of rising food prices and endlessly expanding screen time, it’s no wonder so many of us are yearning to switch off our devices and get out into the garden, either to grow vegetables, or just get our hands dirty. The problem is, not everyone has a garden big enough for a row of cabbages, or even a tomato plant. That’s where Gardening Together comes in. The non-profit organisation has just launched Pop-up Allotments, a new scheme which will allow aspiring gardeners to come together and grow their own fruits and vegetables on plots offered by landowners who are keen to see unused outdoor
spaces flourishing. Gardeners will each be assigned a plot of land within the allotment, but there will also be shared spaces where the community can come together and nurture bountiful crops collectively. Gardening Together has already secured two plots in Frome, but is looking for more. Waiting lists for council-owned allotments are several years long in Frome, so this is a great way to get into growing fruit and vegetables right now.
The Pop-Up Allotments will join Gardening Together’s other scheme, Garden Share, which allows property owners to lend space in their garden to an aspiring gardener. While Pop Up Allotments are designed to foster communities, Garden Share is a more one-on-one arrangement.

The walk to the Stoney Littleton Long Barrow (near Wellow) is lovely. Not many people seem to know about the long barrow itself but it’s 5500 years old, truly incredible and well worth visiting.
We first visited Frome about thirteen years ago, when our two girls were quite small, visiting my sister. We were in Nottingham then but looking to move somewhere more rural and knew that if we moved here, my parents probably would toonot only did my parents move here but also my inlaws, my aunt, uncle, cousin and her family. We’re all from Ipswich originally and, if you visit Frome on a sunny day, you are easily turned! Frome suits us well as our girls are college-age now and our business is based in Frome too.
I love the pace and quality of life in Frome. From our house, in one direction it’s a 10 minute walk and you’re in the centre of town, the other way it’s a 10 minute walk and you’re in the countryside. It feels like you can have a well-balanced life here: a quiet life but lots to do when you want it and not far to Bath, Bristol, London and close to good beaches and nice coastal areas.
There’s something really lovely about the Saturday morning market in the Cheese & Grain car park. We often wander along the river there with my mum and dad and their dogs, get a takeaway coffee and sit on a bench to drink it, watching the world go by. Roller skating, dancing, gardening and most forms of movement feel positive to me, especially if sunshine is involved. I get grumpy if I stay still for too long, and no-one wants that!
