Slow! Glengoyne is distilled slower than any other single malt Scotch whisky. We use air-dried malted barley, rather than using pungent peat smoke and nurse the spirit through our stills at around one-third of the normal rate. This creates a smoother, more complex whisky in which all of the delicate flavours are freely allowed to express themselves – The Real Taste of Malt. As the pace of life speeds up around us, SLOW DOWN and enjoy a Glengoyne. Sit back, relax and take time to savour its unique, subtle flavours. At the Glengoyne distillery we never rush anything. Maybe it still feels a bit wrong to be thinking Christmas thoughts so early in the year. (Imagine how wrong we felt in The List as we compiled this guide, picking out reindeer sweaters while blazing autumn sunshine streamed through the windows.) But when the time comes to book up a restaurant for turkey dinner (or perhaps a Brazilian buffet night – for those who feel festive rules are there to be broken) this guide might just come in handy. We’ve covered several bases for you. There are gift ideas for shoppers who can’t face the high street (stay inside and do it all online, if you so desire), or pay a visit to some of Glasgow and Edinburgh’s best homegrown shops, where cross-stitch brooches and wooden ornaments are being lovingly crafted right now, for all your shopping needs. Then there are our tips on the best Christmas shows at the theatre, the finest club nights around Jesus’ birthday and Hogmanay, and which markets to seek out for a good mug of glühwein. Dig out the old DVD of Bad Santa, throw another log on the gas fire, and get festive.

CHILLED THRILLS Scotland’s a world leader in the art of slipping on ice and falling on your backside, so why not put your skills to the test at the traditional ice skating rinks in

Edinburgh and Glasgow, both held in scenic, central locations. It’s really quite nice when you get the hang of it. While you’re down at Princes Street Gardens, you might also want to go on the Edinburgh Wheel, a seasonal attraction that offers great views, but remember to wrap up warm. No such worries at the Irn-Bru Carnival at Glasgow’s SECC, though, which offers indoor rides and amusements from Christmas Eve. ■ Edinburgh’s Christmas (including ice skating and the Edinburgh Wheel), Princes Street Gardens, Thu 25 Nov–Mon 3 Jan. www.edinburghschristmas.com. ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS Decorating needn’t be restricted to tinsel and spray-on snow from a can, discovers David Pollock Edinburgh is beautiful in winter, when the rain stays away and the Christmas lights are on. Yet, for someone behind the ‘Edinburgh’s Christmas’ campaign, oldfashioned Christmas tree lights just don’t entirely cut it. That’s why last year, students at Edinburgh College of Art were approached to devise some alternative decorations to be placed around the city centre. They came up with a few memorable pieces of work, 4 THE LIST CHRISTMAS GUIDE 2010

including an eight-foot Christmas cake model (pictured, left) in a city centre store, and a creepy Santa sculpture made of found bits of wood. This year the project will be repeated, although the idea is to commission fewer artists to create even larger scale works. The consultation process involved in picking the artists and checking their proposals’ feasibility was just concluding at time of going to press, but one

has already been agreed upon – a series of cut-out designs by Astrid Jaekel, to be displayed and illuminated in shop windows. Each of these designs in series will tell a story, a diorama to be traced through the streets, the hope being that it might merge traditional and modern ideas of what a Christmas decoration is and what it’s for. ■ Around Edinburgh City Centre, Wed 1–Fri 24 Dec. www.edinburghsparkles.com

2010: IT’S BEHINDYOU!

Well, almost. There’s still time for the annual parade of men in drag, children in tears, and kingdoms in cupboards. Yasmin Sulaiman sifts through the best of this year’s panto season and finds literary adapatations, sci-fi themes and fairytale endings YOU SHALL GO TO THE BALL

FEE FI FO FUM

Edinburgh King’s Theatre has missed Andy Gray since his departure from its annual pantomime in 2007. After stints in London and Glasgow, he’s back to join stalwarts Allan Stewart and Grant Stott in this year’s offering, Jack and the Beanstalk. The production promises to bring the well-known fairy tale – in which the impoverished Jack sells his cow for some magic beans – to life in true style. Its beanstalk will grow through the theatre to an impressive 32 feet, at the top of which will be a huge computer-controlled giant. Stott takes on the character of the giant’s henchman, while Stewart will reprise his traditional role as the Dame and Gray will play King Crumble. The popularity of the threesome is sure to give this year’s panto at the King’s some added festive cheer and, claiming to have sold over 32,000 tickets eight months before its opening night, it’s certainly one of the capital’s most anticipated Christmas shows. ■ Jack and the Beanstalk, King’s Theatre, 0131 529 6000, Edinburgh, Sat 4 Dec–Sun 23 Jan.

GARDEN OF DELIGHTS

It’s been five years since Scottish Ballet’s mesmerising adaptation of Cinderella was first performed. Along with The Nutcracker, and Sleeping Beauty, the critically acclaimed show has played a significant role in revitalising the company’s fortunes and establishing its new, modern identity. Artistic director and choreographer Ashley Page and designer Antony McDonald set their Cinderella in pre-revolutionary France to Sergei Prokofiev’s celebrated score, with lavish sets and colourful period costumes reflecting the era’s aristocratic excesses. But the production is much more than its sumptuous surface, as Page explains. ‘Choreographically, although it’s rooted in classicism, there is a contemporary edge to the energy and movement. The characters are also given greater depth than is usual in classical ballets. We wanted to make a much more meaningful narrative out of it and unlock the psychology behind the fairy story.’ This psychology is drawn out through a particularly dark rendition of the tale, whose many adaptations have often taken saccharine form. Page says: ‘Cinderella is apparently the oldest recorded fairy story, with its origins in ancient China. Antony and I went back to the Brothers Grimm version, which in their usual fashion is very stripped down. Quite brutal things happen in our Cinderella and yet there’s a lot of very dark humour because of the period in which it is set.’ Since The Nutcracker in 2003, Scottish Ballet’s Christmas and New Year tour has become a highlight of the festive season. But while he’s proud of all three of the company’s big productions, Page says Cinderella is perhaps his favourite. ‘In Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty, there are references to the original Petipa and Ivanov choreography, and I did that for very specific reasons, but Cinderella is all brand new. So I have a special place for it in my heart as it’s all me.’ (Yasmin Sulaiman) ■ Cinderella, Theatre Royal, Glasgow, 0844 871 7648, Tue 14–Fri 31 Dec; Edinburgh Festival Theatre, 0131 529 6000, Fri 14–Tue 18 Jan.

Vampires and magicians might be more in vogue with younger readers today but Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic novel The Secret Garden has successfully weathered the oscillating trends of children’s literature since its publication nearly 100 years ago. This musical adaptation pre-dates the more famous 1993 film version starring Maggie Smith but boasts many plaudits, including three Tony Awards in 1991 and much-praised lyrics and music 2010 THE LIST CHRISTMAS GUIDE 7

WISHLIST 2010 by Pulitzer Prize-winner Marsha Norman and Lucy (sister of ‘You’re So Vain’ singer, Carly) Simon. The Festival Theatre’s Christmas production features Siobhan Redmond, recently seen in David Greig’s Dunsinane and Rona Munro’s re-working of The House of Bernarda Alba. She appears as the frightening housekeeper Mrs Medlock, who tries to thwart the efforts of orphan Mary, her cousin Colin and their friend Dickon as they explore the secrets of the Craven household and its hidden garden in the Yorkshire moors. There isn’t a reindeer in sight but this heart-warming tale of childhood discovery seems made for the perfect family Christmas outing. ■ The Secret Garden, Edinburgh Festival Theatre, 0131 529 6000, Thu 9 Dec–Sat 8 Jan.

ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL

HAPPILY EVER AFTER?

There are more than a few similarities between Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, The Snow Queen, and CS Lewis’ classic book, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Like Lewis’ tale, Andersen’s – published a century earlier – centres on the story of a white fur coat-wearing queen, wickedly intent on shrouding her kingdom in year-round snow. Of the two young children in the story, one is bewitched and imprisoned – as with Edmund Pevensie’s fate in Lewis’ novel – and there are also strong Biblical overtones. It’s perhaps fitting, then, that the Lyceum’s upcoming Christmas production of The Snow Queen features the creative duo at the helm of its successful 2008 reworking of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: artistic director Mark Thomson and celebrated set designer Ken Harrison. Using Stuart Paterson’s early adaptation, the show stars River City’s Allison McKenzie as the eponymous queen, a role that’s been represented on screen by Sigourney Weaver and Helen Mirren. On the basis of the theatre’s past Christmas productions, this promises to be a magical retelling of Andersen’s chilly tale. ■ The Snow Queen, Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh, 0131 248 4848, Thu 2–Fri 31 Dec.

This is not the first time that Alexandre Dumas’ classic literary creation has been adapted for comic purposes, as fans of the animated series Dogtanian and the Three Muskahounds and Disney’s 1993 film adaptation – complete with Tim Curry in full bad-guy-mode – will attest. However, Scottish playwright Chris Hannan’s new version takes The Three Musketeers to more extreme comic heights, incorporating the key elements of adventure, romance and sword-fighting with a farcical pregnant musketeer and a baby-eating monster played by a massive 12-foot puppet. ‘The puppet is awesome,’ says Hannan, whose notable plays include Elizabeth Gordon Quinn and Shining Souls. ‘I suggested the project to Dominic Hill [the Traverse’s artistic director] a couple of years ago. Our idea was to aim for a geeky, Star Wars-type experience. You know how young children are mesmerised by Doctor Who? That’s what we were going for.’ Directed by Hill, the show has already started its run in Coventry and will work its way up through the country before arriving at the Traverse in December. But despite its wildly energetic, comic atmosphere, Hannan denies that the show, aimed at children over eight, is a pantomime. ‘I think it’s got more of a story than a pantomime,’ he says. ‘It’s got fighting, it’s got pace, it’s got adventure – they’re the key ingredients. In this version, the musketeers are complete losers, way past their sell-by date, and the comedy comes from them.’ The play also marks the first time Hannan has written for children. Having seen the reaction, it’s an experience he’s keen to repeat. ‘Kids just want to be entertained,’ he says. ‘They’re not bothered if something is sad one minute and funny the next. So far, they’ve been really mesmerised by the show – it’s very scary in places but they’re loving it.’ (Yasmin Sulaiman) ■ The Three Musketeers and the Princess of Spain, Traverse, Edinburgh, 0131 228 1404, Sat 4–Fri 24 Dec.

and gender equality, with its female central character, Commander Flo White, rising from her former job as a bingo caller to become a world-saving astrophysicist. But this would be missing the point of this sure-to-be chaotic show, which sits somewhere between the worlds of Star Trek and Monsters Inc in the family entertainment universe. ■ Flo White, Tron Theatre, Glasgow, 0141 552 4267, Fri 3 Dec–Sat 8 Jan.

TALE AS OLD AS TIME WHO’S THE FAIREST OF THEM ALL? Of all the fairy tale reworkings in this year’s panto season, the Tron’s Flo White has to be the wackiest. Following up on the helter-skelter fun of 2009’s Ya Beauty and the Beast, writers Gordon Dougall and Fletcher Mathers transpose the conventional setting of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves into outer space, set far into the future in 2110. This is pantomime at its silliest, with a spaceship called ‘SS Pantoprise’ whose mission is to save the ‘pantosphere’ from annihilation. If you want to look beyond the absurdity, there’s room to view the show as a triumphant tale of social 8 THE LIST CHRISTMAS GUIDE 2010

Following on from the huge success of Cinderella last year, Alan McHugh returns to the Citizens Theatre with a new adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. The ubiquity of Disney’s retelling of this classic fairytale often means that its very mention automatically conjures up images of enchanted castles and singing candelabras in the minds of many youngsters. However, McHugh’s version looks likely to fuse this cheeriness with the thrilling romantic suspense of the story’s more traditional tellings. McHugh is more famous as an actor, with recent roles in The Silver Darlings and Sunset Song and a

recurring role as the panto dame at His Majesty’s Theare in Aberdeen. Cinderella, however, proved he was equally adept at writing family entertainment with a dark and very grown-up psychological edge. And with the now annual charity preview on the first night, which also offers subsidised tickets to school children, the Citizens is cementing its place as a key centre of Glasgow’s Christmas spirit in 2010. ■ Beauty and the Beast, Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, 0141 429 0022, Sat 27 Nov–Fri 31 Dec.

Berlin’s Get Physical is one of the most consistently exciting and critically acclaimed labels in dance music, brimming over with fresh house and techy electro cuts. It’s something that hasn’t escaped the attention of Edinburgh club Musika which, as it returns to host the Official Hogmanay Afterparty, is calling on the services of Booka Shade who founded the label (alongside MANDY and DJ T) in 2002. ‘We started the label out of fun – it was a playground for us,’ says Arno Kammermeier, one half of Booka Shade alongside Walter Merziger. ‘We all wanted to start something new, we were bored of what had gone before. We needed excitement to create something that wasn’t there; we never set up the label to make money.’ This approach has paid huge dividends, with Get Physical releasing tracks by the likes of Italoboyz, Heidi, Audiofly and many more, alongside Booka Shade’s own four studio albums. ‘It has techhouse aspects if people have to categorise it,’ he says. ‘We always add melodic elements so that the songs stay in your mind.’ They’ve also become known for their spectacular live shows. ‘The way we perform electronic music is very physical,’ says Kammermeier. ‘I pound the electronic drum set and Walter has the keyboards. There’s a lot of action on stage.’ It’s a set-up that should bring 2010 to a spectacular close. Kammermeier is also getting into the spirit and can’t wait to get to Scotland over Hogmanay: ‘I actually arrive just after Christmas. I’ll have my family with me and we’ll check out the Highlands. Edinburgh will be a fantastic ending to a very successful year for us.’ (Henry Northmore) ■ Booka Shade play the Musika Official Hogmanay Afterparty, HMV Picture House, Edinburgh, Fri 31 Dec. 2010 THE LIST CHRISTMAS GUIDE 11

BITE BEFORE CHRISTMAS Confused by the tinsel-gilded maze of yuletide eating options? Puzzled by the labyrinth of bars and madcap party ideas? Then let Nicola Meighan guide you, eggnog in hand, through this year’s Christmas festivity quagmire

POST-SHOPPING COCKTAILS AND PRE-CLUB DRINKS Whether you’re all shopped out and in need of a stiff gingertini or all hiked out and in need of a pint, the casual retro-chic of Edinburgh’s Under the Stairs (3a Merchant St, 466 8550) offers a congenial welcome. At the more butch end of the cocktail spectrum, the Raconteur (50 Dean St, 343 3221) foregoes the pink froth and lychees in favour of ingredients such as Japanese single malts or plain and simple ‘fire’. For those hankering for a glass of bubbly in classic surroundings, the opulent splendour of the Dome (14 George St, Edinburgh, 624 8624) is worth a visit for the extravagant tree alone. Glasgow’s amiable the Long Way Home (2 Byres Rd, 337 1145) is committed to home-cooked food, real ale and gin: it offers over 25 varieties and juniper-fuelled cocktails to boot. It also hosts tasting tutorials for private parties. Bar Soba (11 Mitchell Lane, 204 2404), meanwhile, remains a favourite for its mouthwatering Asian fusion menu, seasonal cocktails and mixology lessons. GOOD DEALS AND POSH MEALS Edinburgh’s fun-loving Amicus Apple (17 Frederick St, Edinburgh, 226 6055) offers traditional three-course dinner for £21.95, while Marina ‘Café Marina’ Crolla’s latest venture, Angels with Bagpipes (343 High St, 220 1111), promises classy yuletide dining (threecourse dinner: £29.95). Or down at the bottom of the Mound, the Scottish Café & Restaurant (in the National Gallery of Scotland, 226 6524) part of the Contini empire, also does three courses for under £30, and they’ll throw in free live music in the evening, from Wed 8 Dec. Glasgow’s spacious yet cosy the Arches (253 Argyle St, Glasgow, 565 1000), has a well-priced Christmas menu with a twist (black pudding stuffing!) and tempting vegetarian options (three-course dinner and a glass of kir royale: £19.95), while the Ubiquitous Chip (12 Ashton Lane, 334 5007) offers a typically imaginative festive selection – look out for the white bean and turkey velouté. (Three-course meal with appetiser: £39.94). FAR-FLUNG PLATTERS Looking to shirk the turkey? Enter the burgeoning realm of concept nosh. Edinburgh’s inspired Xiang Bala Hot Pot (63 Dalry Rd, 313 4408) serves up enlightening Chinese culinary action: grab your piping-hot cauldron, select your stock, fresh veg, raw prawns, crabs or chicken claws, and cook up a feast with friends or colleagues (fear not though: staff are on hand to help). Or 12 THE LIST CHRISTMAS GUIDE 2010

there’s always the no-frills, ‘no-more-fusion’ straight-up comfort food at Hong Fo Noodle Bar (3–7 Waterloo Place, 556 7597) for those days where you just can’t face another turkey-cranberry combo. Meanwhile, Glasgow’s sizzling Brazilian steak joint Tropeiro (363 Argyle St, 222 2102) is an all-you-can-eat barbeque buffet that delivers oversized skewers of meat to your table (lamb, steak, pork ribs, chicken, you name it), along with salads, black bean stews, and killer sugarcane rum cocktails. WE ARE FAMILY If you’re seeking a place that caters for nippers, Edinburgh’s Italian retreat Nonna’s Kitchen (45 Morningside Rd, 466 6767) is a good bet: homely, with a colourful children’s menu and plenty of high-chairs. Similarly loved by kids and big kids is Glasgow South Side’s Kebabish (323–325 Victoria Rd, 424 1879), where grilled spiced meat and fish, vegetarian food and children’s options come as standard. This one’s alcohol-free, but rest easy: it offers a dizzying range of lassis, fresh vegetable juices and spiced teas. NON-CONFORMIST KNEES-UPS Of course, straight-up drinks or dinner bashes don’t float everyone’s festive boat. The Glasgow Science Centre (50 Pacific Quay, 420 5005) offers several interactive hooplas with suitably cerebral names such as the Hubble Atrium Party. Quaff elemental dayglo cocktails, dine on a three-course meal, jive to DJs and live music, and enliven your inner genius to boot. Or perhaps you may wish to explore our capital city’s hidden depths, courtesy of the spooky and spectacular Underground Edinburgh (28 Blair St, 225 5440): from subterranean ceilidhs and costumed banquets to ghost tours and historic recreations, its events are a far cry from your run-ofthe-mill office party. (Not a photocopied rump in sight). If, however, like the best of us, your Christmas shindigs necessitate a session of belting out ‘Saviour’s Day’, then clearly there is only one choice. Karaoke. Glasgow’s raucous Curry Karaoke (100 Stobcross Rd – next to the Tall Ship, 248 1485) remains an animated favourite and with good reason – a five-course Indian banquet, plus bubbly on arrival, DJs and the aforementioned mic-abusing opportunities starts at £17.50 per person. For the more reserved karaoke connoisseur (is there really such a thing?), then Edinburgh’s Electric Circus (36–29 Market St, 226 4224) continues to strike gold with its private booths. They cater for between 8 and 50 crooners, and boast over 4000 songs. Do you reckon it’ll have ‘Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves’ by the mighty Cher? It had better.

Buying for a handbag addict? Head for the recently opened Lilies and Dreams, where you'll find dainty eel-skin clutches, large shopper totes with a Mary Poppins carpet-bag capacity, or old-fashioned brass-and-leather suitcase sets. Looking for a present for that house-proud someone? Check out the Lucie Fenton Gallery, where impressive prints (and a bespoke framing service) sit alongside beautiful jewellery. If old-timey glamour is needed, then pay Chic and Unique a visit, for a selection of tortoiseshell trinket boxes, art deco combs and hairpins, plus a large range of vintage costume jewellery, including hatpins, brooches and cufflinks. Need something to

attach the brooch to? Perhaps one of the Spanish designer frocks or chic Danish styles at Eden will answer your Christmas shopping prayers. Their collection of evening dresses (with styles ranging from out-and-out elegant to 'feminine with a tough edge' are worth checking out if you have a diary full of work nights out and festive parties). For an altogether more hands-on gift experience, Kiss The Fish Studios are worth bearing in mind, where you can paint your own picture frames, toys and presents. It’s perfect for getting the kids involved with the Christmas shop, but fear not grown ups: they do BYOB craft nights, and alternative hen parties too. Complete the experience with a relaxing lunch or dinner in one of the neighbourhood's excellent restaurants. is always The Raconteur, tucked away up Dean Street. Redwood is another winner, where Californian sunshine is served up to you on a plate. In honour of the USA's favourite pre-Christmas feast, the basement restaurant will also be laying on a three-course Thanksgiving menu, with all the fixings, on Thu 25 Nov. And don’t be surprised if you spot the odd giraffe around Stockbridge’s leafy streets over the next few weeks . . . It’s all part of the Charity Giraffe Parade, where forty shops including Kiss The Fish and Laurel Gallery will display a specially decorated 5ft giraffe somewhere inside or near their store. The unveiling ceremony will take place on Thu 11 Nov, when boutiques will stay open late, and take the sting out of Christmas shopping with wine and special discounts. The giraffes will be displayed until Sun 12 Dec when they will be auctioned off for two charities – LifeCare and Children 1st.
