Chinese new year 2020
dinburgh’s Burns&Beyond and Chinese New Year Festivals are joining forces for a very special programme of events, celebrating the alignment of Burns Night and Chinese New Year, which will both fall on 25 January 2020. Enjoy a feast of Scottish culture and traditions and explore China’s celebratory phenomenon in an action-packed programme of events. Chinese New Year Edinburgh is the largest Chinese New Year celebration in Scotland. Each year is attributed to an animal from a 12-year cycle of the Chinese Zodiac and 2020 is the Year of the Rat. In China, it’s a celebration of the New Year according to the lunar calendar, sharing many similarities with Scotland’s own Christmas and Hogmanay traditions. Here in Edinburgh, it’s a chance to explore the ever-growing links between Scotland and China – and with Burns Night and Chinese New Year only coinciding every 76 years – there’s never been a better time to celebrate! Burns&Beyond with Johnnie Walker returns for 2020, celebrating the legacy of Robert Burns through a programme of traditional and contemporary arts and culture from across Scotland and beyond. The inaugural festival in 2019 welcomed over 30,000 visitors, with audiences of all ages discovering the best in live music, art, comedy and more in some of the capital’s best-known buildings and more secretive spaces. For the first time, a combined programme of special events and initiatives will take place throughout the city. Highlights include a spectacular Chinese Lantern installation at St Giles’ Cathedral, Burns&Beyond Culture Crawl, Edinburgh’s Official Chinese New Year Concert at the Usher Hall, the Giant Lanterns of China at Edinburgh Zoo and the new Burns&Beyond Festival Club in the famous Assembly Rooms. Local businesses in the city will also welcome visitors with everything from traditional red envelopes and bilingual ceilidhs to bespoke cocktails and whisky tastings. Wherever you are from, we wish you the happiest of New Year and Burns celebrations.

FESTIVAL RAC HE L SERM AN I
With music at the heart of Robert Burns’ rich poetic legacy, it seems only fitting to celebrate our national bard with a line-up of some of Scotland’s finest musicians. Giving audiences the opportunity to raise a toast to the master songsmith, the Burns&Beyond Festival Club at Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms plays host to an array of concerts and events with folk, rock, whisky and a ceilidh all added to the mix

RACHEL SERMANNI, CHRIS STOUT & CATRIONA MCKAY OPENING NIGHT CONCERT, THU 23 JAN, 7–8.30PM
Folk-noir balladeer Rachel Sermanni has often cited Burns as an inspiration, her beautifully evocative sound rooted in the traditional while providing hints of contemporary soundscapes through grunge guitars and percussive textures. Having played the inaugural Burns&Beyond festival in 2018 with a soldout performance ‘under the moon’, she returns for a special opening night concert with Chris Stout and Catriona McKay. Sermanni is known for being a truly dynamic singer and songwriter, whose performance and lyrics draw from a deep well of mystic lore, dreams, nature and the simple-complex experience of being human.

by the history of their native Shetland Islands and Scotland, taking their traditional instruments and catapulting them into the contemporary world of music making. Awarded Best Duo at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2018, Stout and McKay’s performance at the opening night concert promises to showcase their trademark synergy and bold musical expression.

CLUB Nearly four years on from her critically acclaimed second album, Tied To The Moon, she returned this summer with her third full-length effort, So It Turns, which incorporates darker elements into her sound. Weaving in stories about her time spent at a Buddhist monastery in the Scottish Borders, general feelings of hopelessness about the current state of the world and her overwhelming desire for action and change, the album features a range of musical styles and powerful elements of storytelling. Performed live, the album’s tracks take on a new life, their sublime and captivating melodies adding extra warmth to Sermanni’s heartfelt vocals. Having collaborated and gigged together for over two decades, Shetland fiddler Chris Stout and Dundonian harpist Catriona McKay have created a unique partnership and a sound that continues to evolve. They have excited audiences all over the world with their own brand of music inspired
EDWYN COLLINS THU 23 JAN, 9–10.30PM
Elsewhere on the Festival Club programme you’ll find Scottish music legend and inspirational artist Edwyn Collins. Recently celebrating his 60th birthday, the musician, producer and Postcard Records cofounder from Edinburgh, has been a pioneer of Scotland’s music scene for over 40 years, both as the lead singer of 80s post-punk band Orange Juice and as a solo artist in his own right. In February 2005, Collins was hospitalised following two cerebral haemorrhages which resulted in aphasia, and he subsequently underwent an extensive rehabilitation period. He resumed his musical career in 2007, with his latest album Badbea released in 2019 to rave reviews and critical acclaim. ‘The album is nostalgic really, looking back to the Orange Juice days,’ he said of Badbea in a recent interview. It’s his fourth album since the brain haemorrhages that nearly took his life. The title of the album itself refers to an abandoned village (pronounced ‘Bad Bay’; ‘It’s near the sea . . . ghostly . . . ’ he says) just up the coast from where Collins and his wife and manager, Grace Maxwell, now live and have a studio in the northern Scottish village of Helmsdale. Showing no sign of slowing down anytime soon, Collins embarked on a UK-wide tour in support of Badbea, inviting fans to enjoy the album’s frenetic post-punk and soulful balladry, as well as continuing his obvious drive to keep performing and making music. His Burns&Beyond gig offers a chance to see the songwriter in his element and to reflect on a career that has greatly impacted Scottish pop history as we know it today.

T I D E L I N ES FRI 24 JAN, 9–10.30PM
The evening following Edwyn Collins’ muchanticipated gig, Glasgow-based quartet Tide Lines will be taking to the Assembly Rooms stage with their highly eclectic sound, which is described as ‘a combination of Celtic soul, folk philosophy and big guitars with the voice of a Gaelic angel in singer and chief songwriter, Robert Robertson’. Having first emerged in the summer of 2016 with the release of their debut single,‘Far Side Of The World’, the band – Robert Robertson on guitar and vocals, Ross Wilson on keyboards, Ali Turner on guitar and bagpipes, and Fergus Munro on drums – have since taken the Scottish music scene by storm, heavily influenced by the traditional music of their native Highlands and Islands. Their first single of 2019, ‘Running at the Dark’, charted at number 13 in the Scottish charts in the

first week of its release, the band then embarking on a UK tour in spring this year, with a summer of festivals across Europe keeping them busy. Their devoted fans are renowned for creating electric atmospheres and raucous live shows and having recently sold-out the Glasgow Barrowlands for their biggest headline show to date in under 6 minutes, this promises to be a hot ticket for the festival.
OT H E R EV E N TS No Burns celebration can be truly complete without a good old-fashioned ceilidh and luckily, the Burns&Beyond Festival Club has got you covered. ASSEMBLY ROOMS radio broadcast and television appearances in 1964 and, to date, has recorded no less than 32 albums, making him the undisputed Ceilidh King. Finally, what better way to honour the bard than by enjoying a wee dram or two to close the programme? Whisky connoisseurs and those less familiar with Scotland’s national drink can head to the Assembly Rooms’ grand Ballroom for an exclusive whisky tasting with Johnnie Walker, which will educate and entertain audiences on the history of the drink, while providing more insight into the process of whisky production in Scotland, the ingredients required and its legacy around the world. Johnnie Walker Ambassador Nigel Robertson will be your guide as you discover the distillation and taste behind some of Johnnie Walkers’s most famous brands. In the words of Burns himself, ‘freedom an’ whisky gang thegither! Take aff your dram!’ Don’t end the night without visiting the Festival Club Aftershow, with Davie Miller, founding member of Scottish electronic pioneers FiniTribe, and Paradise Palms Records keeping you dancing until late each night. A special night of music and entertainment in support of
In their expanded second year series of events, the team behind Burns&Beyond have announced that the 2020 programme will feature a special charity concert, A Waltz Across the Carpet, to celebrate the life and music of Frightened Rabbit’s Scott Hutchison. All proceeds raised from the concert will be donated to Tiny Changes, a charity founded by Hutchison’s family following his death in 2018 to raise awareness about mental health issues affecting children and young people. Hutchison, who openly expressed his personal struggles with mental health through his music, art and interviews, impacted the lives of so many people throughout his life and continues to do so to this day. Tiny Changes was founded to carry on his legacy and aims to inspire ‘positive action on mental health among young people and to make

tiny changes to Earth’, referencing a much-loved Frightened Rabbit lyric. Fittingly, A Waltz Across the Carpet also takes its name from a Hutchison-penned lyric in the song ‘Old Old Fashioned’. The night of live music and entertainment at the Usher Hall will be curated by Scott’s brother and bandmate, Grant Hutchison, and is set to feature many artists and performers whose lives were touched by both Scott’s music and friendship. All proceeds raised from the event’s ticket sales, as well as other fundraising throughout the festival, will be donated to Tiny Changes. CULTURE TRAIL
major minor music club Major Minor Music Club returns to Burns&Beyond following last year’s sold-out event with another fun-packed show for music lovers and a unique opportunity to take the next generation to their first gig
M
artha Ffion, the musical project of Claire Martha Ffion McKay, will be taking over the Freemasons’ Hall with her live band for a unique afternoon concert, combining classic songwriting with her beautifully melodic dream-pop sound. We catch up with the Glasgow-based musician to find out more about her upcoming special gig.
MARTHA FFION & BAND
On Major Minor Music Club and why it’s a great initiative for families
I’m really inspired by people who are doing gigs differently and making them more inclusive for people who might feel alienated by the normal gig culture. There are loads of times I’ve missed gigs I wanted to go to – because they finish ridiculously late or I know there’s going to be a ‘laddy’ atmosphere with people shoving and throwing pints. It’s great that Major Minor are committed to creating a safe and fun atmosphere for kids and families! I remember seeing live music when I was a kid at festivals in my hometown and how much of a buzz it was, even though it was usually just an Elvis impersonator . . . On being a part of Burns&Beyond and the legacy of Robert Burns
Being Irish, I experienced my first ever Burns night in student halls in Glasgow – that was my first time trying haggis. I love the tradition of it all though I have to admit I am still pretty new to Burns’ work (aside from ‘the hits’!) It’s going to be really fun to celebrate Burns&Beyond in Edinburgh with the band. On what families and little ones can expect from her special set
I’ve been doing my research, figuring out what the kids are listening to. There’ll hopefully be at least one fun cover. And also hopefully some new Martha Ffion songs from the new album I’m currently working on. We can’t wait! Be transported back to a time where weird and wonderful creatures roamed the Earth as Edinburgh Zoo’s award-winning lantern festival returns Having quickly become a hugely popular element of Edinburgh’s winter celebrations, the awardwinning Giant Lanterns event returns to the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s Edinburgh Zoo, but with a whole new theme for 2019. Running across 47-nights, this extravaganza is based around a Lost Worlds theme, where hundreds of prehistoric creatures will be brought to life to present a visually stunning display of the history of wildlife. ‘We are thrilled to be bringing Giant Lanterns back to the zoo this winter and really excited about our new theme,’ says Lyndy Donaldson, events and experiences manager at Edinburgh Zoo. ‘Giant Lanterns: Lost Worlds will offer visitors the opportunity to discover the amazing creatures that once lived on our planet and help us raise awareness of the very real threat of extinction faced today by endangered species around the world.’ The enchanting mile-long nocturnal trail around the zoo will transport visitors back to a time when unfamiliar creatures roamed the earth, with over 600 lanterns highlighting 570 million years of incredible wildlife, from the first array of tiny microbes, to a world ruled by dinosaurs and an ice age that gave way to the forgotten giants
of the animal kingdom. ‘Highlights include a tyrannosaurus rex, a 32-foot-tall volcano, a gigantic 65-foot-long snake as well as some new interactive elements,’ adds Donaldson. ‘As Scotland’s only Chinese lantern festival, it’s a fantastic experience for all the family.’ This is the third year of the Giant Lanterns event which continues to dazzle and delight guests of all ages. The event stems from a long-standing relationship between the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland and Sichuan, the birthplace of Edinburgh Zoo’s giant pandas, with the lanterns painstakingly handcrafted by artisans in Sichuan, travelling over 5000 miles before arriving at the zoo. The event has timed entry slots, every 15 minutes from 4.45pm to 7.30pm. Visitors are encouraged to book online in advance to secure their preferred date and time. The Giant Lanterns of China runs in partnership with the VYA Creative Lantern Company, DDM Entertainment and Events Inc. and the Conficius Institute for Scotland at the University of Edinburgh. Giant Lanterns of China: Lost Worlds, Fri 15 Nov 2019–Sun 26 Jan 2020 (not 25 Dec) Tickets: £8.50–£17, edinburghzoo.org.uk
