elcome to The List Eating & Drinking Guide. We’re proud to be celebrating our 25th edition of this comprehensive, wellinformed and up-to-date guide to the dining scene in Edinburgh and Glasgow, both in print and online at list.co.uk/food Here you’ll find coverage of over 1000 restaurants, bars, cafés, shops, markets and more. Over the past year we’ve visited over 800 places anonymously, including over 160 new openings (look for the NEW logo through the listings). Our 65-strong team of local reviewers are our eyes, ears and palates around town, helping us keep track of the ever-evolving scene, and rigorously selecting our Hitlists – our picks of the best places to be found in each section. In addition, our carefully curated Tiplists section near the front of the guide highlights the restaurants, bars and cafés worth seeking out for a host of reasons – from a great coffee, pizza or steak to where to find romantic dining spots, bargain deals or who’ll let the dog in. Our new features section delves into local personalities and restaurants on the scene, as well as coverage of those important matters such as enjoying great wine with your dinner or locating the best local food shops. This year we’ve tweaked our coveted Eating & Drinking Awards, giving out a total of eight between the two cities. In particular, our awards shine a well-deserved light on the newcomers who are doing something special on the scene, as well as people who have shown their importance to local food and drink over the years. There are also our two Reader Awards, where thousands voted for their favourite spot in each city, with honourable mentions to the runners-up. As we reach this milestone, we’d like to say to all the readers, restaurateurs, hospitality staff, reviewers and the many supporters who have been with us for all or some of our 25-year journey: thanks for being part of it. Keep on Eating & Drinking.

HOW WE REVIEW The List Eating & Drinking Guide values its editorial independence. Unlike other restaurant guides which only cover venues that have paid to be included and where review visits are prearranged and carefully orchestrated, no entry in the Eating & Drinking Guide pays to be included, none is obliged to advertise and none is given sight of its review before publication. Restaurants covered in the guide are chosen on merit and reviewed incognito – to ensure our experience is that of any other diner. Each restaurant is freshly reviewed each year by a different writer from The List’s team. Our reviewers are experienced and knowledgeable, but they’re not professional food inspectors. They’re chosen to reflect an informed local diner’s viewpoint, and they are encouraged to express an unbiased and even-handed opinion. No special favours are accorded to the companies that choose to buy display advertising space in the guide – they are treated exactly the same when it comes to their review visit, write-up and Hitlist selections.

THANKS A lot of effort goes on behind the scenes to publish the guide each year, including reviewing, editing and work on IT, databases, websites, production, advertising sales, administration and accounts, and each part contributes to the success of the guide. Our thanks to all the members of The List team who have helped put this year’s guide together. We also want to express our appreciation for the support from our sponsors Birra Moretti, as well as to the Scotch Beef Club, Taste Our Best and the many other supporters of the guide.

STREET FOOD IN

E

dinburgh has a slightly complicated relationship with street food. It’s not that we don’t like the idea, more that there often isn’t a critical mass of people (and parking spaces) for the year-round street truck queues you see in other parts of the world. So street food crews have had to organise, build on their collective power and (Festival time aside) generally offer a little something more than solitary vendors. Edinburgh’s markets were among the street food pioneers; find one and you’ll generally find decent grub, too. Stockbridge’s weekly Sunday market (stockbridgemarket.com) is generally considered to be the granddaddy of them all – great for filling your shopping basket and your tummy, though go early to avoid the queues. Once the upstarts, The Pitt (thepitt.co.uk) and sister venue Food + Flea (pitt.co.uk/foodnflea) are also good bets. The Pitt is a weekend street food market with music, drinks and tunes – folk tend to make a bit of a day of it here, while the Food + Flea daily market is more of a grab-and-go option for tourists and nearby office workers. Both have an impressive rotating cast of vendors who change every month or so. It’s also worth checking out Fireside (FB: @firesidearches), tucked into the arches at East Market street, which feels more like an outdoor bar. Leith Walk’s Off the Walk (FB: @offthewalk) is another weekend option, a laid-back space with acoustic music, food, drink, stalls and a fire pit to warm up around on the colder nights, while the big outdoor space at the Three Sisters hosts the Old Town Street Food Festival (threesistersbar.co.uk/the-oldtown-street-food-festival) on bank holiday weekends over the summer. And let’s not forget the traditional single-vendor spaces, often literally weathering the storm in their quest to bring decent food and coffee to happy eaters. Edinburgh’s old police boxes are fruitful sources of decent coffee and a quick bite, while vendors like the Meadow’s Tupinquim (page 115) very much feel part of the streetscape.

ROUND THE WORLD

foods should go for the steaming latkes, gefilte fish balls or the more widely known falafel. A bent for more sour, vinegary flavours is notable, especially in dishes like the chopped herring or the horseradish and beets sauce and pickles served with the gefilte fish. For someone looking for a place off the beaten path, but avoiding over-branded restaurants chasing the new food fads, Mark’s Deli is a nice wee lunch excursion. But make sure you plan ahead, as the opening hours are quite restricted. + Dishes rarely found in Glasgow - A narrow window of opening hours

Mezze GREEK Top Floor, The Rotunda, 28 Tunnel Street, West End, 0141 375 1111, glasgowrotunda.com/mezze-glasgow | £8.95 (set lunch) / £22 (dinner)

Sitting atop Glasgow’s Rotunda, Mezze’s location is a double-edged sword: on concert nights, it livens up with the buzz of the Hydro-bound crowd, but on event-free evenings it is taken by a lull. Whether the place is packed or peaceful, under the Mediterranean-blue ceiling and dimmed lights diners will always be taken by an epicurean mood. Owing its name to the eponymous Eastern Mediterranean manner of serving small dishes to share, Mezze serves up staples of Greek cuisine as well as some Turkish items, such as the pitta bread and dip samplers, the famous Levantine tabbouleh salad, and Turkish-style kofta kebab. This mix of neighbouring cuisines caters well to those enamoured with Mediterranean aromas, and the tapas-size portions allow diners to try out a range of dishes. Grilled food is the speciality here, and the tender octopus with hummus proves this is really Mezze’s forte. The non-grilled items do not fall behind – the warm and refreshing lamb dolma is one mezze you may want to keep all to yourself. + Good value pre-theatre deal on all night - Bit out of the way unless going to the Hydro/SEC

NEW Mezzidakia MEDITERRANEAN 71–73 St Vincent Street, City Centre, 0141 221 0202, mezzidakia.com | £9.95 (set lunch) / £17 (dinner)

Mezzidakia tours the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean to source mezze dishes inspired by the Lebanon, Morocco, Persia, Turkey, Greece and Syria. Inside this member of the citysprawling Di Maggio’s Restaurant Group, it’s well-run and inviting; soft green walls and an abundance of light, both natural and from quirky chandeliers, create a welcoming holiday vibe that’s echoed by a diverse and appealing menu. Old favourites such as falafel, dolmades and moussaka are mixed in with native specialities; colourful, fresh plates fill the tables and there are enough offbeat options, such as Persian monkfish massaman curry, to satisfy the adventurous. Posh kebabs and gyros are sadly a lunchtime-only offering, but the herbed and spicy chargrilled meat dishes that fill them can be ordered as an à la carte mezze any time. + Bright, clean and cheerful - Hustle and bustle isn’t that relaxing

NY American Grill NORTH AMERICAN Princes Square, 48 Buchanan Street, City Centre, 0141 221 7667, nyamericangrill.co.uk | £12.95 (set lunch) / £20 (dinner)

A shopping mall seems an apt location in which to find this US-style diner – from the local owners of mall-mates Barça and

Obu. And being in swish Princes Square means NY American Grill is much more upmarket than the usual food court offering. Despite its long bar and longer cocktail list, there’s a family-friendly vibe, with solid, substantial furnishings in heavy wood, and an equally solid, and lengthy, menu. The focus is on meat, with steaks, chicken and skewers cooked off on their Josper grill, or hot dogs and burgers that come stacked high with toppings. A good proportion of the dishes have bypassed the grill and gone straight through the fryer, such as the Southern comfort food classic of fried chicken with waffles, drizzled with maple syrup and soaked in country style gravy with a fresh salad garnish that adds colour to the plate. If there’s space, the terrace seating has a buzzier, more social atmosphere than the plusher and slightly more formal dining area inside. + Great service, always with a smile - Popcorn shrimp is neither bite size nor crunchy

NY Slice NORTH AMERICAN 309a Sauchiehall Street, City Centre, 0141 353 6591, nyslice.com | £11 (lunch) / £11 (dinner)

This slick independent – which has won design awards for its branding – offers New York style pizza, showing a dedication to creating an authentic replica of the east coast US favourite at this informal diner – a size up from the original spot that opened a few years back further down the road. The pizza world has moved on in the city, with authentic Neopolitan-style pizza proliferating but no-one else attempts the distinctive New York variety. The pizza dough is matured and spun in house, then baked to get that crispy edged pizza with the all-important chewy and foldable base. Toppings show endeavour, too, with lots of marinating and roasting of meats done in house, including Cajun brisket and tandoori chicken. Buffalo wings, subs and garlic knots that come with a meaty sauce for dipping bolster the menu that is mainly pizza. Deals with the selection of large slices are ready to go in-store, while the expansive delivery service can bring you the full might of the 18in pie for that proper NY-style feast. + Pizza pie flying high - Fast-food stylings

Nur MIDDLE EAST 22 Bridge Street, City Centre, 0141 258 2326, nur-restaurant.co.uk | Closed Mon | £16 (dinner)

Behind a quaint facade of a historic building on Bridge Street lies not a portal into Victorian Glasgow, but a lush and mesmerising Egyptian world. Nur has a capacious interior, but with dimmed lights and small, widely scattered tables, it achieves a spellbinding and intimate atmosphere. With a mezzanine atop the ground floor, it is equally well equipped for accommodating large groups. Ostensibly akin to other Mediterranean and Middle Eastern locals in the city, Nur stands apart thanks to a number of distinct and singular dishes. Those new to the cuisine should break the ice with fava beans cooked in butter with spicy Egyptian sausage or the minty zabadee yoghurt dip. Tagines – casseroles slow-cooked in earthware – champion the authentic Egyptian food offering, and diners can choose from chicken, lamb, beef or veggie, each prepared in a particular ingredient mix. The restaurant vaunts stalwart Levantine staples as well – kofta balls and falafel, as well as hummus, tahini or babaganoush dips with

flatbread, and for mains, a few gems from the charcoal grill. + Ideal for romantic dinners - Not open for lunch

✱ Restauracja U Jarka POLISH Sikorski Polish Club, 5 Parkgrove Terrace, West End, 07756 970306 | Closed Tue | £12 (lunch) / £12 (dinner)

Nestled in the heart of the West End’s Polish Club, U Jarka offers an unforgettable insight into that country’s cuisine. Traditional Polish dishes are executed with a skill and generosity that the chef imparts to the surrounding community by teaching local school children to make pierogi dumplings. Placki, or potato pancakes, are another speciality, light in texture like flattened herby dumplings, and served either with mushroom sauce, or a softly melting beef stew rich with gravy. Fried trout with almonds makes a lighter alternative and may even leave you with some room for delicious cheesecake after. A hearty appetite is more important than a fat wallet here, soups start at £1.20 for the borsch, so an excellent meal can be enjoyed for less than the price of a bus ticket home again. Cooking and portions alike are substantial and hearty, washed down by their list of very reasonably priced Polish beers and wines. Every chair, table and picture here tells a story, and if you’re lucky enough to meet owners Jolanta and Jaroslaw, they’ll share them all. + Charming and authentic - Stairs back out are hard work after so much beer and stew

St Louis Café Bar NORTH AMERICAN 734 Dumbarton Road, West End, 0141 339 1742, stlouis-cafebar.co.uk | £10 (lunch) / £15 (dinner)

The kind of homely neighbourhood café-bar where a quick coffee turns into brunch, then an all-day catch-up over burgers and beers. Dogs and children are welcome as long as they behave. Then it livens up at night offering Tuesday quizzes, DJs at the weekends, live music and poetry. The blackboard names a rotation of special offers and soup of the day, while the main menu ranges from salads and snacks to proper meals, all with gluten-free and vegan options in abundance. The geographic influence extends as far as Budvar at the bar and a mildly Louisiana vibe to the food – sea bass is baked under a dusting of Cajun spice, served with rice in a spicy tomato ragù and a side of collard greens. There’s a bowl of chipotle mayo to dip the homemade sweet potato fries in and the lengthy list of burger options come in brioche buns and loaded with toppings. Despite proximity to a major roundabout, the cluster of outside tables has a continental feel and is in demand all year. + Welcoming and laid-back atmosphere - Wobbly tables are asking for disaster

NEW Surf Dogs NORTH AMERICAN 49 Kilmarnock Road, Southside, 0141 230 6392, surfdogsglasgow.net | £9 (lunch) / £9 (dinner)

Surf Dogs carves out a niche with gourmet hot dogs, locally sourced with vegan versions and a dose of nostalgia. Décor is basic diner with cute pop culture touches – 80s film art, sci-fi quotes and vinyl on the walls, and piped movie dialogue in the toilets. All the frills are on the food – the Texan Dog wraps a beast of a Bavarian frankfurter, supplied by local specialist importers, in a soft torpedo bun and buries it in pulled

pork, coleslaw and a pretty garnish of jalapeño. It’s structurally impossible to eat without a knife and fork. Portions are American-style large, although the bowl of crispy, salty halloumi fries could be twice as big and still leave you greedy for more, especially dipped in sweetly savoury homemade tomato sugo. The drinks list is similarly short and well chosen – a few cocktails, a couple of craft beers on tap (including perhaps the only draught offering of Portland in Glasgow), a refillable soda gun, and specialist low-cal fizzy pop from local producer Foal. + Great value takeaway lunch deal - Onion rings let the side down

Taco Mazama Mexican Kitchen MEXICAN • 263 Byres Road, West End, 0141 337 3399, tacomazama.co.uk | £8 (lunch) • 6 Renfield Street, City Centre, 0141 248 8940, tacomazama.co.uk | £11 (lunch) / £11 (dinner)

With prime locations on Byres Road and Renfield Street, and a veritably vegetarian-friendly menu, Taco Mazama can confidently claim the title of Glasgow’s stronghold of piquant, quick eats. It’s a favourite lunch spot for students and professionals scurrying to squeeze in a burrito in their schedule, and its late opening hours make it a practical solution to a post-outing stomach rumble. The menu lends itself to a food free-play as customers may choose any combo of wrap, filling, and sauce on the board. Burrito, taco, quesadilla and fajita await the house-chargrilled chicken, pulled pork, or chorizo. There is a surfeit of sauces to douse the meal, and a spoonful of creamy smooth guacamole to top it all off is well worth the extra 75p. Loyal to its signature green colour, the takeaway serves up four daily vegetarian options, boosted by an extra vegan special filling every Tuesday. As a great temporary solution to wistful dreams of Central America, Taco Mazama readily awaits around the corner, to provide a quick and affordable daily dose of Mexican street food. + Sizeable portions - Tomato salsa too watery

Yiamas Greek Taverna GREEK 16–20 Bath Street, City Centre, 0141 353 1386, yiamastaverna.com | Closed Mon | £16.50 (lunch) / £16.50 (dinner)

Mixing traditional Greek cooking and a no-frills, café-style décor, this wellestablished taverna is well placed for a meal on a night out in town, or a quick bite when shopping. It’s open-plan, with huge windows to the front and an equally open view to the kitchen, so you can easily check on the progress of your meal. Upstairs, a separate dining room is popular with private parties. There’s one mezze menu, that’s a little confusing – dishes, roughly speaking, increase in portion size with every column, until the final list of sides. If in doubt, staff offer sensible guidance on how much to order – although portions are generous so don’t expect to go home hungry. Standards such as moussaka and kleftiko are complemented by more unusual dishes that highlight their authenticity, such as a side of Cretian rusk bread, which isn’t often seen on Scottish menus. A highlight is Yiamas tiropitakia, a harmonious contrast of soft salty feta cheese wrapped in light filo pastry, fried crispy and drizzled in honey and sesame seeds. + Light touch with pastry evident in excellent baklava - Menu warrants a refresh – several items no longer available
