FOREWORD Just recently, Scotland was voted the world’s Best Cinematic Destination in an online poll run by USA Today – and with its photogenic locations and aweinspiring scenery it’s easy to see why. So if you want to go ‘set-jetting’, this handy guide should help. As Scotland’s largest conservation charity, the National Trust for Scotland has an impressive portfolio of more than 100 built and natural properties across the country. Many of these special places have been used as backdrops for filming over the years, for TV dramas, documentaries, photo shoots, and Hollywood blockbusters. In this guide, you’ll find a range of places to visit on your next ‘location vacation’. Pretend you’re James Bond and M as you drive through Glencoe, recreating the scene from Skyfall, or follow Outlander’s Claire and Jamie when you visit Culross and Falkland in Fife. We work very closely with film crews to accommodate their needs while still ensuring that the conservation of the property remains our top priority. Stiletto heels, for instance, are banned – but we make sure to provide heel protectors to actors and presenters when they need them! I hope this booklet inspires you to come and enjoy our wonderful locations and to seek out those that have featured in your favourite films for yourself. We look forward to welcoming you to a National Trust for Scotland property soon. Anna Rathband Filming Manager The National Trust for Scotland nts.org.uk/filming

007’s route to Skyfall Look at a picture of Glencoe and it’s hard to believe you’re not staring at a painting: the rugged peaks that line this stunning valley are Scotland’s gift to the natural world. With its striking cliffs, clamouring waterfalls and dramatic skyline, Glencoe is a filmmaker’s dream. It’s no wonder then that Sam Mendes used it as a location in a pivotal scene in 2012 Bond instalment Skyfall, when 007 and M escape to his ancestral home in the Highlands. Bond isn’t the only legendary British film franchise to shoot in Glencoe either; a few landmark scenes in the Harry Potter films also used the glen as its backdrop, as did Highlander and Rob Roy. ■ Glencoe, Highlands, PH49 4HX
E
ven before Skyfall (2012) was released, James Bond had strong ties with Scotland. Sir Sean Connery, who’s from Edinburgh, played the first Bond on screen – and writer Ian Fleming was so taken with this Scottish connection that he wrote 007’s Scottish ancestry into a later novel. In Skyfall, Glencoe is used to stunning, dramatic effect. It’s a thrilling interlude after an action-packed sequence of events: Daniel Craig’s Bond has just chased former MI6-agent-gone4 Set-Jetting in Scotland

bad Silva (Javier Bardem) through the London Underground. After a bomb goes off on an empty tube train, Silva attacks M (Judi Dench) at a public inquiry, before she’s saved by Bond and two other agents. In an attempt to keep M safe, Bond takes her to his family home, Skyfall. It’s in this memorable scene that the two drive up the A82 – not the A9 as the film states! – before the film’s explosive ending. Fancy yourself a Bond in disguise? you drive through the magnificent valley in your car – Aston Martins not required. Harry Potter fans will recognise Glencoe too. In the third film in the franchise, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), the scenes featuring Hagrid’s hut were filmed on location in the glen. Scenes in the sixth instalment, The Half-
Blood Prince (2009), were also filmed here. Before anyone had heard of Taken, Liam Neeson filmed Rob Roy (1995) – a romantic adaptation of Walter Scott’s classic novel – in Glencoe. And 80s movie buffs should visit Buachaille Etive Beag in the glen, near which the battle scene at the start of Highlander (1986) was filmed.

ROYAL BURGH OF CULROSS A magnet for film crews Fife has more than its fair share of picturesque villages, but Culross is perhaps its most stunning. One of the best preserved examples of a 16th-century town in Scotland, it has been beloved by film crews looking for an authentic backdrop for decades, from Michael Caine’s Kidnapped in the 1970s to hit US TV show Outlander today. ■ Royal Burgh of Culross, Fife, KY12 8JH

laire Randall and Jamie Fraser have been delighting fans of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series since the first book was published in 1991. But it was only in 2014 that her much-loved characters came to life on the small screen. The story – in which Claire falls through a time portal in 1940s Inverness and finds herself in 1743 Scotland, where she’s married off to clansman Jamie – is set in Scotland, where filming began in 2013. Fans of the show will instantly recognise the buildings of Culross, which poses as the village of Cranesmuir in Outlander. In Cranesmuir, Claire (a former WWII nurse) meets and bonds with Geillis Duncan, the procurator fiscal’s wife with whom she shares an interest in the healing power of herbs. Culross Palace garden also features in the show as the herb garden in Castle Leoch, where Claire collects medicinal plants. In another scene filmed in Culross, Claire and Jamie help to free a young boy who has his ear nailed to a post for stealing. John Buchan’s thrilling adventure novel The 39 Steps has been treated to numerous adaptations since its publication in 1915, from

Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 film starring Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll to the long-running West End show. But one version of The 39 Steps was filmed right here in Culross: the 2008 BBC television movie featuring Rupert Penry Jones as its beleaguered hero Richard Hannay. In the film, a political rally is held in Culross, and it’s here that Hannay – unbeknownst to him – meets the traitor he’s looking for. Avenger Captain America is one of the key characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but did you know that Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) also filmed some scenes in Culross? Culross was used as the backdrop for a Norwegian town in which a battle takes place during World War II, and it features the town’s famous Mercat Cross. This location also turns up in the film adaptation of Kidnapped (1971), featuring Michael Caine (pictured right), in which Culross plays the role of Edinburgh. Other films to use Culross as a location include kids’ film The Little Vampire (2000) featuring Richard E Grant and Bollywood film Kyun! Ho Gaya Na (2004). nts.org.uk

Hill of Tarvit is popular with fashion photographers, thanks to o the Edwardian splendour of its mansion house, croquet lawn n and beautiful surrounding parkland. Popular Indian TV chef Saransh Goila filmed at Kellie Castle in 2014, sourcing ingredients from the beautiful castle gardens. Long-running BBC drama Silent Witness has also filmed nearby. The episode ‘In a Lonely Place’, broadcast in January 2014, was partly filmed at Falkland Palace, which is home to Britain’s oldest real tennis court. ■ Hill of Tarvit, Fife, KY15 5PB; Kellie Castle, Fife, KY10 2RF; Falkland Palace, Fife, KY15 7BU

ulross isn’t the only National Trust for Scotland location to feature in Outlander. The village of Falkland poses as Inverness in 1946, where the story opens. Here you’ll see the Bruce Fountain, where Jamie’s ghost looks up at Claire, and the Covenanter Hotel, which is Mrs Baird’s guest house. Across the Forth in East Linton is Preston Mill, which is the mill on Jamie’s family home. Culloden Battlefield, which is cared for by the National Trust for Scotland, is key to the story in both the book and TV series. Claire visits Culloden in 1946, and again in 1746 ahead of the infamous battle. ■ Preston Mill, East Lothian, EH40 3DS; Culloden, Highlands, IV2 5EU. Visit nts.org.uk/outlander. CULZEAN CASTLE From The Wicker Man to Antiques Road Trip Turrets, battlements and lashing waves: the Robert Adam-designed Culzean Castle offers the perfect setting for adventure, romance and intrigue. So it’s no wonder that it’s inspired film crews for decades. Fans of 1973 cult classic The Wicker Man in particular will recognise Culzean Castle as the home of Lord Summerisle, played memorably by Christopher Lee. Exterior shots of the castle were used in the film, although the majority of the interior shots were filmed at Lochinch Castle in Dumfries and Galloway. More recently, several BBC filming crews have visited Culzean. In October 2014, Antiques Road Trip made a stop at the castle. And the award-winning BBC4 documentary Written by Mrs Bach, in which Martin Jarvis investigated whether JS Bach’s Cello Suites were in fact written by his wife, also featured Culzean. ■ Culzean Castle and Country Park, Ayrshire, KA19 8LE

Elsewhere, Christopher Nolan fans will recognise the landscape of the Cairngorms in one of the director’s most famous action sequences. The opening scene in the third of Nolan’s Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises (2012) – in which villain Bane (Tom Hardy) hijacks a plane – was filmed in the Cairngorms over the Mar Lodge Estate. ight in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, the expansive Mar Lodge Estate offers visitors plenty to explore, from the mysterious, picturesque Highland landscape to the sumptuous rooms of the Lodge itself. Mar Lodge Estate’s splendid interior and dramatic grounds have attracted several film and TV crews over the years. In January 2014 and 2015, the estate hosted BBC’s Winterwatch. Presenters Chris Packham, Michaela Strachan and Martin Hughes-Games (pictured below) spent several days at the Lodge, exploring the estate’s harsh, snow-covered landscapes, exquisite natural beauty and wildlife. The estate has also featured in Channel 4’s Walking Through History. In the show, broadcast in winter 2014, presenter Tony Robinson delved into British history through guided walks. The estate features in the episode entitled ‘Victoria and Albert’s Highland Fling’, which follows a four-day walk that starts at Pitlochry and ends

ith its spectacular interior and the neighbouring expanse of Pollok Park, Pollok House is an oasis of splendour just a stone’s throw from Glasgow city centre. This grand stately home is renowned for its Edwardian Kitchen Restaurant, elegant gardens and its fine collection of Spanish art, featuring works by Goya and El Greco. It’s also very popular with fashion photographers. Thanks to its well-preserved period details, Pollok House was a filming location for the BBC’s Georgian-era legal drama, Garrow’s Law. Starring Andrew Buchan as William Garrow and Rupert Graves as Sir Arthur Hill, Garrow’s Law was broadcast from 2010 to 2012, and Pollok House was the outside of Sir Arthur’s home.

The property also features in an episode of classic Scottish comedy, Rab C Nesbitt – specifically, the 2014 New Year Special, in which Rab poses as a Robin Hood figure, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Pollok House certainly saw its fair share of aristocracy in its time; it’s the former ancestral home of the Maxwell family, once one of Scotland’s most politically important families. One of its residents was Sir John Stirling Maxwell, a founder of the National Trust for Scotland. Today, Pollok House, its garden and the celebrated Edwardian Kitchen Restaurant are open to visitors every day throughout the year. ■ Pollok House, Glasgow, G43 1AT nts.org.uk

round 50 miles east of Edinburgh, you’ll find St Abb’s Head, a coastal nature reserve that’s t a a dramatic rocky habitat for thousands of o seabirds. It’s featured in many nature documentaries, d and has even drawn the attention of o Sir David Attenborough. Off the west coast lies the beautiful small island of o Iona, which recently featured in Scottish filmmaker Scott Graham’s movie of the same name n (pictured left). Alongside it is the tiny island of o Staffa, home to Fingal’s Cave, which has inspired i many artists over the years. Helen Mirren won an Oscar for her portrayal of Elizabeth II in The Queen (2006). And although it’s not a current royal castle, Castle Fraser was used as a backdrop for some of the scenes in the movie. Elsewhere, Craigievar Castle (pictured on back page) was used as a location in HBO TV movie The Last of the Blonde Bombshells (2000), featuring Judi Dench, James Cosmo, Ian Holm and Olympia Dukakis. Crathes Castle on the River Dee is renowned for its lush gardens. So naturally, it featured in the BBC programme Glorious Gardens from Above. Since rescuing it from demolition in the 1930s, the National Trust for Scotland has restored the interiors of the first two floors to their 17th century appearance, giving visitors an insight into how the citizens of the capital once lived. The property was also featured in Sean Connery’s Edinburgh, a documentary in which the beloved actor provides impressions of the city he was born in. The holiday accommodation is located in the upper floors and sleeps two people.
FIFE St Andrew’s House, Falkland Dating from the 17th century, this house lies at the heart of the village of Falkland, a key filming location for hit US TV show Outlander.
