‘Christmas isn’t Christmas without a trip to the Christmas market. The smell of pine, twinkling lights, mulled wine, festive tunes. It doesn’t feel like Christmas until I’m walking through the market stalls . . . especially when we stop for churros so I can feel like I’m back home!’ Bruno Micchiardi, principal dancer, performing as Cinders.
‘Christmas isn’t Christmas until you’re with your family and friends. As a dancer, I look forward to sharing this time with my friends on stage and the audience. ’Tis the season to give: the main reason I love to perform is to give to our audience.’ Jessica Fyfe, guest principal dancer, performing as Cinders.
‘Christmas isn’t complete without loved ones, fairy lights and cheese boards. During the Christmas Eve matinee performance interval, I look forward to hearing the Scottish Ballet Orchestra’s stunning rendition of a Christmas classic. Hearing it on the tannoy is such a treat and gets me right in the festive feels!’ Aisling Brangan, soloist dancer, performing as Morag. n Cinders!, Theatre Royal, Glasgow, Saturday 9–Sunday 31 December; Festival Theatre, Edinburgh Friday 5–Saturday 20 January.

WICKED
There’s no doubt this big, bold, belter of a blockbuster packs a punch, but at its heart, the Wizard Of Oz backstory is a simple tale of friendship, sacrifice and how being popular isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. hen it comes to musical theatre next year, Edinburgh is where it’s at. Starting in December, Wicked defies gravity at Edinburgh Playhouse. Fresh from 20 years on Broadway, this big, bold and beloved classic has enough grit in its oyster to hook even the most cynical. The Playhouse also hosts a series of weeklong runs worth sticking in your 2024 diary. Shrek The Musical is the perfect introduction to the genre for a younger audience in January, while February sees Jesus Christ Superstar resurrected. It’s up there with the very best, and possibly the only good thing Andrew Lloyd Webber has ever written (and, as the titular character might say, that’s a hill worth dying on). Olivier Award-winner Six has a few points to make about a certain royal serial killer in June and cult classic Come From Away rolls into town in September. But the musical that’s generated the biggest buzz for decades is the genre-defying, rulebook-ripping-up Hamilton which takes over the Festival Theatre this spring. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s extraordinary achievement is worth almost every inch of the hype, so don’t throw away your shot: it will sell out. Wicked, Thursday 7 December–Sunday 14 January; Shrek The Musical, Monday 22–Sat 27 January; Jesus Christ Superstar, Tuesday 6–Saturday 10 February; Six, Tuesday 11–Saturday 15 June; Come From Away, Tuesday 17–Saturday 21 September; all at Edinburgh Playhouse. t’s a giant party, with banger after banger at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay. The Torchlight Procession makes a welcome return (Friday 29 December), with a new route from The Meadows to the city centre. With fire performers, pipe bands and a crew of Vikings from Shetland’s Up Helly Aa festival, watching the lights wend through the atmospheric Old Town is a fantastic experience. The event also raises around £50k to help charity Social Bite end homelessness. The Night Afore Disco Party brings together two of the biggest, bestest guilty pleasures around. Acclaimed ABBA sensations Björn Again headline, while singalong giants Massakoe support with their hairbrush anthems (Saturday 30 December). If you fancy something a little lowerkey, the Assembly Rooms form an intimate setting for Ross Wilson’s homecoming gig as Blue Rose Code celebrate the very best of folk, soul and Americana at the Night Afore Hoolie (Saturday 30 December). Onto the night itself, when Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party brings in the bells in time-honoured tradition. Celebrating 30 years, the party includes street theatre, pipes and drums, and the fabulous fireworks. Pulp headline the Concert In The Gardens, and their performance will be broadcast in the Pop Zone, creating one massive city-centre party. There’s also the Tartan Zone, featuring the best of Scottish music, while a giant outdoor Silent Disco will bring the house down (quietly). If that all sounds a bit too chilly, New Year Revels will see the back of 2023 indoors, with a ceilidh, DJs and Massaoke. Got wee ones? A similar event will also run for families, with Bairns New Year Revels starting at the civilised hour of 2pm. Finally, don’t flop on the first: First Footin’ is back with an afternoon of live music from artists including Hot Chip, Kathryn Joseph and Lau, in venues as diverse as St Giles Cathedral and The Auld Hundred. Edinburgh doesn’t grab all the glory; there’s plenty to do in Glasgow too. If you want to end the year on a laugh, The Stand’s Hogmanay Special brings the best of Scottish comedy to the stage, hosted by Marc Jennings, Susan Riddell and Gary Little, with headliner Ray Bradshaw. Shows kick off on Wednesday 27 December and run through to Sunday 31 December. The Ashton Lane Street Party is back for 2023: join 3,000 revellers with bands, street performers, DJs and pipers ringing in the bells. SWG3 brings together some of the best DJs in Europe for New Year’s Eve. This epic club night will see the whole venue come together, with Cassö, Eliza Rose and DJ Seinfeld among the headliners. he Linn Park Circular starts at the Snuff Mill Bridge in Cathcart, with a counter-clockwise loop passing two cemeteries, a waterfall and a golf course. After gradually drifting back up towards Linnview Avenue, you’ll find yourself on Old Castle Road where a delightful pub called The Old Smiddy awaits with lovely regulars and sport on the screens. There are about 30 different murals on the well-documented Glasgow Mural Trail, which is mapped out at citycentremuraltrail.co.uk. The stretch near the Clyde takes in ten or so: work your way from west to east to finish at Whistler On The Green, where snug surroundings, a gastro-ish menu and a great pint of Guinness make the trip worthwhile. A couple of miles up the Kelvin Walkway lies Dawsholm Park, flanked by Maryhill and Kelvindale (and their respective train stations). It’s a nature reserve and feels less formal than other parks, with wildflower and grass meadows. Come back down the walkway, past the aqueduct with the Botanics on your right, and go under Great Western Road to arrive at Inn Deep. Sit inside or out and enjoy a well-earned craft beer from their 20-odd lines.
Walking in a winter wonderland
around glasgow
Come twixmas (the twilight zone betwixt Christmas and New Year), you’ll be desperate to get out of the house. But where to go? David Kirkwood and Suzy Pope’s selection of urban-ish walks all take in some cracking scenery and end at a cosy pub for a win-win winter wander

end your way around the bends of the Water Of Leith, taking the five-mile stretch from the Modern Art Gallery near Dean Village to the psychedelic street art of Colinton Tunnel. Finish by popping into The Spylaw by the tunnel’s entrance. This cosy gastropub serves a menu of seasonal mains and classics; the Cullen skink is particularly warming on a winter’s day. Avoid the lung-burning climb to the summit of Arthur’s Seat and instead follow the gravel path at the foot of Salisbury Crags from St Margaret’s Well past Hunter’s Bog. Reward yourself with a pint at The Sheep Heid Inn. Described as one of Edinburgh’s oldest pubs, the chocolate-box exterior, traditional menu and old skittles alley out back make it feel just that. You can reach the Flotterstone Inn in half an hour by bus. Indulge in their hearty pub grub before hitting the Pentlands’ trails, or start at Harlaw Reservoir near Balerno and use a pint by the open fire as the carrot for an eight-mile ramble through the Maiden’s Cleugh path between the heather-bruised hills. Either way, this cottage-like spot is the perfect warmer.

Drinking games
Like a shopping-centre Santa Claus passed over for promotion, Kevin Fullerton is ho-ho-hoing a special Christmas edition of his regular drinks challenge onto the pages of our Wishlist. This month’s festive-flavoured challenge is . . . find the perfect tipples for gifts
D
onning a Santa hat is only natural for a man like me. Medically diagnosed with a dangerous abundance of Christmas cheer, I’ve been known to don a red suit, paint my ample beard white with children’s finger paint, and drop gifts into strangers’ homes under cover of night. As part of my community service for breaking and entering, the courts ordered me to write this gift guide detailing alcoholic and alcohol-free tipples you can give to your loved ones. Each drink has been selected for the elements that make a desirable present: the shape of the bottle, the hint of premium quality and the exceptional taste. First in this court-mandated article is Big Peat’s Christmas Blend, a limited-edition whisky which aims to capture the warm spices and aromas of the festive season. Of course, the real taste of Christmas would be a drink which combines Cliff Richard’s sweat with Noddy Holder’s saliva (another business venture that landed me in the dock), but Douglas Laing & Co’s creation evokes a harsh melange of festive tones when drunk neat, with a warm aftertaste that’ll buffer against the cold weather. It’s less ‘roast chestnuts on an open fire’ and more ‘this whisky’s set my mouth on fire’, but the rugged texture is complex enough to slake any whisky-lover’s thirst. Onto a more PG-rated experience with the premium soft drink company Bon Accord, an Edinburgh-based brand that’s made strides into the mainstream. Their cloudy lemonade is something to behold for fizzy juice lovers, sparkling with freshness. If you planned to make someone’s Christmas, the rich diversity of flavours on offer in their variety pack would make the festive period fly by.

Cosy up
>> I pondered Highland Moon while I garlanded my security tag with tinsel. It gives Depression-era moonshine a modern spin with a variety of different flavours giving this notoriously harsh liquor a soft edge. Although I was sent Apple Pie, Rawberry and Original, I opted for the throat-burn splendour of a Peach & Blood Orange and enjoyed a syrupy texture that can punch through any mixer for a potent buzz. Give it to the millennial in your life and watch them marvel at the old-timey jar design. Eden Mill’s Amarone Red Wine Cask Aged Gin offers a more subtle quality at a premium price point, but the luxury you receive for £45 is more than worth shelling out for. Aged for 500 days in a red wine cask, there’s a strong floral texture to this gin. But it’s the bottle that’ll sell this as a gift, with dimpled glass that could sit proudly in any drinks cabinet. Travelling down a more traditional route is Meikle Tòir, a peated Speyside single malt whisky from the Glenallachie distillery. It’s an old-school distillery, the kind that American tourists go weak at the knees for, and the two whiskies I sampled from their four-pack gift set were as rich and deep in flavour as you’d expect, offering a robust nose and taste that’s heavy on peat, smoke and honey. As I reach the end of my sentence, I find myself in desperate need to recommend an alcohol-free drink and wrap up this column like the many gifts I’m legally restricted from giving. Days Lager is arguably the simplest of the tipples in this column as an unfussy AF lager but it’s a perfect stocking filler for those looking to try a sober Christmas. One for gift-givers on a budget, perhaps. Anyway, now that I’m fully reformed it’s time to start dishing out the gifts again. I’ll see you in your living room very soon. 52 THE LIST Wishlist 2023

THE PENGUIN BOOK OF CHRISTMAS STORIES VARIOUS
CROOK MANIFESTO COLSON WHITEHEAD Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author Whitehead’s eagerly awaited sequel to 2021’s Harlem Shuffle. It finds furniture salesman and small-time crook Ray Carney navigating the underbelly of 1970s New York, in a work that masterfully blends cultural history, crime thriller and social satire. Fleet
Go globetrotting with a collection of classic Christmas short stories that transports readers from Nordic woodlands to midnight mass in Rio (and even into space). Featuring Santas, ghosts, trolls, miracles and more from the likes of Truman Capote, Dylan Thomas and Shirley Jackson. Penguin

DAVID SEDARIS
CHRIS CARSE WILSON Humourist Sedaris is a very funny man indeed and this pitch-black festive collection is bound to lift your spirits. From the fresh hell of being an elf in Macy’s department store to taking a blowtorch to kids’ Christmas plays, Sedaris will have you laughing out loud. Little, Brown
HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! DR SEUSS The residents of Whoville love all things Christmas, but a certain grumpy green neighbour (with a heart two sizes too small) hates everything about it and is determined to end it once and for all. Ripper rhymes and fun illustrations make this Dr Seuss tale an evergreen holiday hit. HarperCollins
This haunting debut follows a nameless narrator hunting in the Highlands for their lost father, in the wake of his wife’s death. An abandoned cottage full of jumbled notes reveals the father’s mental disintegration, but the narrator soon begins to struggle with reality too. HarperNorth
BIRNAM WOOD ELEANOR CATTON Catton, who scored big with her 2013 Booker Prize-winning epic The Luminaries, returns with a gripping thriller pitching readers into a world of big business versus greenies. A guerrilla gardening group and an American billionaire cross paths on New Zealand’s South Island. Granta Wishlist 2023 THE LIST 55

IMAD ALARNAB
In this lyrical debut, Radcliffe confronts grief and sexuality in a powerful and tender portrait of Jamie, a young man who journeys to the Highlands with his new boyfriend as he attempts to figure out how to deal with life after the death of his parents. Fairlight Books
Not just a fascinating tour through Syrian-inspired dishes, this book also recalls how Alarnab came to Britain as a refugee and created a new life for his family after war destroyed his restaurant business. As the subtitle says, it’s a love letter from Damascus to London. HQ

LYNSEY MAY
JULIUS ROBERTS Another excellent debut. Former List books editor May delivers an emotional, darkly humorous tale of a world spinning out of control when a relationship breakdown, empty bank account and troublesome teeth force protagonist Ellis back to her dysfunctional family home. Polygon
After leaving the rat race of London restaurants, firstgeneration farmer, chef and Instastar Roberts shares simple home cooking from his small-holding in Dorset. Roberts moved to find the good life, reconnecting with nature while cultivating and cooking with his own ingredients. Ebury Press

COMMUNITY
BATTLESTAR GALACTICA
It’s a miracle this ground-breaking show is so consistently hilarious given the outrageous shenanigans that went on behind the scenes (mostly involving a deeply obnoxious Chevy Chase). A group of misfits unite under the wing of a disbarred lawyer at a US community college: copious adventures ensue. ITVX
This ‘re-imagining’ of the 1970s Star Wars rip-off is a wildly ambitious exploration of what it is to be human. Set in the distant past, it details the ongoing war between a desperate human colony fleeing its android pursuers, some of whom have ingeniously taken on human form. BBC iPlayer
DOCTOR WHO
CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM Seinfeld co-creator Larry David gets himself into all sorts of scrapes, insulting almost everyone he meets (sometimes accidentally, often on purpose). The life and times of a multimillionaire and his showbiz pals really shouldn’t work but it does, with semi-improvised performances belying intricate plotting. Now
GHOSTS Created by the Horrible Histories team, this sweet family-friendly comedy follows the escapades of a disparate group of spirits, departed throughout history, who are forced to co-exist with the new (and very much alive) owners of their dilapidated mansion. TWIN PEAKS Famously cancelled after two seasons (despite an almighty cliffhanger), creators David Lynch and Mark Frost returned to Twin Peaks over a quarter of a century later. The original series veers from sublime to shocking; this new concluding season features arguably the most extraordinary episode in the medium’s history. Paramount+
THE WIRE The sprawling crime series that launched the careers of Idris Elba, Dominic West and Michael B Jordan is a fastidious interrogation of the socio-political issues affecting urban US society. Packed with memorable characters, each of the five seasons tackles a different institution in the city of Baltimore. Now PICTURE: HBO
Here’s where it all started to go wrong for Norfolk’s favourite broadcaster. Sacked from his plum BBC job after he accidentally shot a guest dead, Partridge is reduced to living in a travel tavern. This perfection of Steve Coogan’s alterego gives him a credence that endures. ITVX
Now more than 60 years old, almost all of Doctor Who is finally available on iPlayer. While some classic series may seem old-hat to new fans, there’s bound to be a story for everyone (but best not start from the very beginning unless you’re an ultra-fan). BBC iPlayer
Cosy up Yeah, yeah, Christmas is a time for family. But when that gets tired (and it will), Murray Robertson’s pick of the streamers will see you right
for the darker side CHERNOBYL This harrowing depiction of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster is an indictment of the hubris which helped end the Soviet Union. From catastrophic negligence to cover-up attempts, this half historical re-enactment/half horror depicts the calamity in impeccable, often excruciating detail. Now PICTURE: SKY UK LTD HBO
THE DROPOUT The claims of biotech founder Elizabeth Holmes that her unique blood-testing machine could diagnose a plethora of medical conditions led to a $9 billion valuation of her company. The only problem? It was all nonsense. Amanda Seyfried won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her portrayal of the one-time billionaire. Disney+
TIME Jimmy McGovern’s fierce three-part prison drama focuses on two men on either side of the law: a new inmate out of his depth (Sean Bean), and a sympathetic prison officer (Stephen Graham) faced with a terrible dilemma. It’s a brutal experience featuring top performances, including Brian McCardie as a creepy old lag. BBC iPlayer
WATCHMEN
for Christmas feels CHRISTMAS WITH THE ROYLE FAMILY Most Royle Family Christmas specials are worthy of your time, but this is the original featuring a bathroom floor flooded with tears. The simple scene, with a distraught Denise (Caroline Aherne) and her comforting father, Jim (Ricky Tomlinson), is one of British TV’s defining moments. BBC
DIE HARD It’s full of Christmas iconography and music, and it’s about a family trying to get together on Christmas Eve. Never mind that it was released in July, Die Hard is a Christmas film (see also its lesser sequel). Disney+
IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE It took 30 years for Frank Capra’s festive fantasy to gain the respect it deserves, after it became a staple of TV schedules once its copyright expired in 1974. The story (of a community spirited man who finds redemption thanks to his guardian angel) is now a firm family favourite. Prime Video
THE OFFICE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL He may divide opinion now, but Ricky Gervais (with co-writer/director Stephen Merchant) nailed this climax to the David Brent story (later undoing it with an ill-advised film). Tim and Dawn’s will they/won’t they romance is the resolution we crave, but it’s Brent’s redemption that makes this a Christmas classic. BBC iPlayer
This spectacular TV series acts as a spiritual sequel to the cult graphic novel of the same name. Despite its outlandish setting, Watchmen’s plot, spurred by the actions of a fictional group of white supremacists, is unfortunately packed with contemporary relevance. Now Wishlist 2023 THE LIST 59
