s a m t s i r h It's not C . . . t u o h t i w
Christmas is a time to indulge in festive traditions. One of our little traditions is to be super nosey, and ask various people what they like to do in December. These lot were kind enough not only to oblige us, but to furnish us with a few words to finish the sentence ‘it's not Christmas without . . . ’
A trip to the GFT to see It's A Wonderful Life. We also love listening to Christmas songs on repeat (especially singing along to Mariah!), playing our own Christmas songs and a few covers too. We basically love the lot – fairy lights, sparkle, tinsel.
CHITRA RAMASWAMY Award-wining journalist and author The holy trinity of a stupidly oversized Christmas tree, a copy of the Radio Times Christmas special, which I pore over relentlessly (spending more time circling things and planning my viewing than actually watching anything, as is the tradition) and a Dickens novel. Actually, make that a holy quartet. None of this matters without the people you love.
HONEYBLOOD Indie-tinged grunge duo from Glasgow It's A Wonderful Life on Christmas Eve. It's a family tradition to watch it and I cry about ten times throughout the duration of the film. Oh, and prawn cocktail, which only appears at Christmas too.
KEVIN WILLIAMSON Co-captain of multiarts bonanza, Neu! Reekie! Mulled Buckie, the bright lights of Leith and waking up in a snow-covered ditch. Gets ye in the mood for the turkey.

FIVE GUYS NAMED MOE On its original run in the early 1990s, Five Guys Named Moe clocked up an Olivier Award win and a Tony nomination. Now, director Paulette Randall directs this revival, part of Edinburgh's Christmas season, of the acclaimed musical about 1940s hit-maker Louis Jordan, written by The Wire's Clarke Peters. See preview, page 16. Festival Square Theatre, Edinburgh, Fri 18 Nov–Sat 7 Jan.
STREET OF LIGHT It’s not just a clever title, you know: this outdoor event floods Edinburgh’s George Street with pretty Christmas lights. 60,000 festive bulbs worth of pretty Christmas lights, to be precise. As you walk through (you need to book), you can hear music from the likes of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus, Royal Scottish National Orchestra Junior Chorus and Blazin’ Fiddles. George Street, Edinburgh, Sun 20 Nov–Sat 24 Dec.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS Glühwein, sausages, pretzels and more glühwein: what's not to love about the European Christmas Market? Shopping wise, you can pick up as many quaint wooden ornaments and unusual handmade gifts as your wee arms can carry. It's a treasure trove of festive consumerbased happiness. And did we mention there's glühwein? See feature, page 14. East Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, Sat 19 Nov–Sat 7 Jan (not Sun 25 Dec).
DISNEY ON ICE: FROZEN Look, we're not going to start this description by cracking some kind of ‘do you wanna build a snowman’ joke. Definitely not. We did it last year, and we've Let It Go. Let's stick with the facts: everyone's favourite overhyped snow-themed cartoon, Frozen, has made the transition to ice. Naturally. See Elsa, Anna and that gosh-darn adorable snowthing Olaf sing and dance on skates. Little ones will love it. Grown-ups probably will too. The SSE Hydro, Glasgow, Thu 24–Sun 27 Nov.
FOODIES FESTIVE CHRISTMAS Arrive hungry at this festive food extravaganza. There's a market with over 100 exhibitors selling Scottish produce, a street food avenue and hands-on lessons in the Christmas Food Theatre. Leave the car too as there are craft gin tastings, champagne masterclasses and a ski bar serving mulled wine. EICC, Edinburgh, Fri 25–Sun 27 Nov.

It’s been two years since Kristine Cagney Kringle was released on an unsuspecting theatre audience in Miracle on 34 Parnie Street, where she fought for the rights of a (somewhat lairy, but endearing) female Santa Claus. And it’s the first time McKnight has reprised a character from a previous pantomime, as he wanted to take his muchloved dame into a different setting. As the writer and star explains, ‘Basically, when I was assembling the story I felt there needed to be high stakes and then the brain started to tick: Christmas is the best time to bring in Santa and if I’ve already set up that Santa is female it would be a shame not to “resurrect” a character. This gives me a wee chance to see what she’s like in her own home and who she hangs aboot with.’ From that first appearance, Kringle became a fully-formed character who has life beyond one show, and McKnight found the process of reviving her exciting, especially when finding a suitable sparring partner for her to clash with. Another happy surprise is that McKnight’s wonderful comedy foil Darren Brownlie is also back. ‘He’s such a versatile actor / dancer / singer that it’s a joy to see how we can contort him each year,’ says McKnight. ‘So this year, we’re launching a full RuPaul assault – he’s the Alexis Colby to my Krystle Carrington’. Undoubtedly, The Snaw Queen, with its witty post-modern sensibility and McKnight’s sharp command of Glasgow slang and pop cultural references, will leave many other pantos wanting. With Pavilion favourite Johnny Mac and Wet Wet Wet’s Marti Pellow replacing the Krankies as the star turn, Qdos’ high energy and expensive production looks to new celebrities to share the stage with spectacular effects and the trademark 3D visuals. Prince Charming’s search for his Cinders is given a starry treatment. The creative team behind A Christmas Carol returns, and with Dominic Hill at the helm the emphasis is on storytelling with a twist. There are no panto dames and choruses of ‘he’s behind you’, and the tale of two children visiting a gingerbread house won’t be sugar-coated but will thrill older children and adults. EDINBURGH FIVE GUYS NAMED MOE One guy who gave rock’n’roll to you ‘What is Five Guys Named Moe about?’ ponders director Paulette Randall. ‘It’s about a guy on a journey really, and discovering himself. And hopefully coming to the right decision at the end – with a lot of music that educates him!’ Although Five Guys was an early entry in the jukebox musical genre, debuting in 1991, it relies less on the brand of Louis Jordan, whose music provides the soundtrack, than the irrepressible energy and nostalgia of 1930s and 1940s jazz and blues. Jordan is not a household name – despite the musical winning an Olivier Award in 1991 and getting a Tony nod – and his 1930s hits lack the familiarity that rescues many jukebox musicals from lazy scripting. Aside from ‘There Ain’t Nobody Here but Us Chickens’ and the title number, which provides the plot with its all-singing, all-dancing heroes, the songs stand up as slices of popular jazz rather than recognisable sing-a-longs. Using the classic blues story of the lovelorn, lonely and broke man as a springboard for a musical therapy session, the five guys educate their audience in the ways of love and flirtation. This revival promises to re-establish Jordan as a great songwriter, who turned out witty dance music and changed the course of 20th century music without losing his sense of fun. Building to an outbreak of audience participation – there is always dancing in the aisles – Five Guys Named Moe promises to rescue the jukebox musical from its formulaic patterns and celebrate a hit parade superstar who gave his songs the kind of surreal storytelling that fits perfectly in musical theatre. Festive journey through the looking glass
The King’s Theatre’s prize panto posse – namely stalwarts Andy Gray, Allan Stewart and Grant Stott – return to the stage with a new stab at the classic horticultural fairytale. Expect at least a handful of more cheeky jokes for the grownups in the audience about the size of Jack’s, er, trunk, as well as the usual topical digs at Edinburgh’s trams. (Niki Boyle) ■ King’s Theatre, Edinburgh, Sat 26 Nov–Sun 15 Jan.
Anthony Neilson writes and directs the Lyceum’s Christmas show this year: an original adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s trippy children’s tale. Expect Victorian-era family-friendly flights of fancy, with the possibility of darker undercurrents given Neilson’s in-yer-face reputation and previous works such as The Wonderful World of Dissocia and God in Ruins. (Niki Boyle) ■ Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh, Sat 26 Nov–Sat 31 Dec.
High-drama dance spectacle Artistic director Christopher Hampson revives his choreography of the classic story of children lost in the wood. Reimagining the adventure so that the happy ending reunites the heroic pair with their lost friends, this production skimps on neither the magical spectacle or the high drama battling the wicked witch. FAMILY-FRIENDLY FUN
FRIEND-FRIENDLY FUN FR
When you’ve got your elderly relatives, the sprogs and that auntie who isn’t really your auntie in tow this December, you need somewhere to eat that’s going to keep everyone in good festive cheer. Well, we’ve got you covered. In Glasgow, the Brooklyn Café has been feeding families for 85 years. The menu covers breakfast, lunch and dinner, with café classics like mac’n’cheese and an ice-cream counter full of traditional and quirky flavours. Over at West Brewery, the kitchen serves up quintessential German cuisine as well as old favourites such as fish and chips and the delightfully named Kinderschnitzel for the kids. It’s also dog friendly, for those whose definition of family extends to our four-legged friends. After the complexity of three-course Christmas meals, bask in the simplicity of Paesano Pizza. There are just eight pizzas to choose from, all made with ingredients direct from Italy, and retro ice-cream offerings like 99s and oysters for dessert. If the kids in the party need to run off some energy, Scaramouche boasts a kids’ play area to keep younger diners entertained while you tuck into classic pub grub. In Edinburgh, Hemma also has an in-restaurant play area. You’d be hard-pushed not to find something you like on one of their smörgåsbords, and the menu also boasts a variety of veggie, vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free options. Mimi’s Bakehouse serves comfort food crowd-pleasers including stovies and quesadillas for adults and children. Avoid the Christmas pudding versus yule log debate and enjoy some of the glorious homemade cakes for afters. La Favorita has a reputation for family-friendly service and offers an extensive menu of wood-fired pizzas and gourmet pastas. Once the kids have selected from the dedicated menu, they can engross themselves in the complimentary kids pack. Elsewhere, Scran & Scallie is Michelinstarred chef Tom Kitchin’s version of the pub. This relaxed venue serves breakfast, lunch, ‘bar scran’ and dinner, all following the pub’s ethos of ‘from nature to plate’, and welcomes children of all ages (and even pooches) for some top-notch grub.
Ah, th the Christmas night out: sequins, shots and squabbling over the disappointing Secret Santa gifts you and your friends exchanged earlier. Your night will almost certainly end with a visit to the local chip shop and a bit of a sore head, but at least there are plenty of interesting places to drink cocktails and beer before you reach that point. For a group night out in Edinburgh, Akva is a good place to start your evening. It’s nice and big, which means you can cram all your pals plus their reluctant partners into one space. It’s good for cider and beer, and if all that Rekorderlig gives you an appetite, there’s a tasty selection of bar bites, too. For a fun night filled with cocktails, Hoot The Redeemer is the one. As well as having one of the strangest bar names in the city, this place has a retro funfair theme and something called a ‘mystic ball cocktail’. If you’re after a more upscale cocktail bar, try 99 Hanover Street. There’s usually a DJ spinning some mad tunes too, so if that third cosmopolitan sends you over the edge, you can bust a sweet move. For a simple pint and a chat, try Jeremiah’s Taproom or The Hanging Bat. Both are craft beer havens, and have ever-rotating taps. Or, if you fancy wine and dulcet music, Smith & Gertrude and The Last Word Saloon are two Stockbridge haunts that will be right up your street. If you and your squad in Glasgow are all about craft beers, start at Drygate. This East End industrial-styled beer wonderland has all the barley and hops you can dream of, and it’s pretty stylish, too. At six°north, Scottish brewers bring a unique blend of Belgian beers and Flemish food to a big bierhalle setting. It’s like Oktoberfest in December, which can only call for the donning of festive lederhosen. For an East Village-style speakeasy, head to Chinaski’s. This is the place to order a bourbon and impress your pals with your love of wintery whisky. Or, for Scottish craft gins and tonic pairings, try The Salisbury. If you get hungry, you can always order one of their famous fish dishes, too. An obvious place to end the night is Nice’n’Sleazy: it’s got all the live music and White Russians you could need. Or, there’s Hillhead Bookclub for cut-price cocktails, and a gramophone filled with punch. Naturally.

Read all about it

Not sure what to get the book lover in your life this Christmas? Brian Donaldson rounds up some of the hottest reads of 2016
SWING TIME
Zadie Smith This novel about friendship, race and class slides between now and 1982. An intense rivalry between two wannabe dancers in north-west London morphs into an ambitious meditation on global politics taking in a Madonna-esque pop star building a school in West Africa and a blacked-up Fred Astaire.
PARTY ANIMALS David Aaronovitch Subtitled ‘My Family and Other Communists’, the ever-entertaining journalist and broadcaster grew up in a household that believed it could change the world. The boy David’s upbringing meant he couldn’t join the scouts or read The Beano but he was allowed to visit a dentist who rejected the use of anaesthetic.
THE RISE, THE FALL AND THE RISE Brix Smith Start Surely one of the few memoirs (of this or any other year) to feature both Mickey Mouse and Mark E Smith, The Rise, the Fall and the Rise tells how one Laura Elisse Salenger became Brix Smith, a pivotal figure in 80s post-punk who finally left all that craziness behind to transform into a fashion expert.
INCARNATIONS
Sunil Khilnani Accompanied by a major Radio 4 series, this is an exploration of 50 Indian lives from Buddhist icons to Bollywood superstars, featuring philosophers, warriors, poets and entrepreneurs, some world famous, others much less so. Along the way, Khilnani paints a picture of how this often mythical country became the world’s biggest democracy.
THE OUTRUN Amy Liptrot The ascetic and wild terrain of Orkney makes for a stark contrast to the hedonistic and unhinged environs of London in Liptrot’s debut about the addictions she succumbed to in the latter and the steady recovery she made surrounded by the former. Will Self is a fan, as were panelists of the Wainwright Prize.
HIS BLOODY PROJECT Graeme Macrae Burnet The Kilmarnock-born writer is only the second Scottish author to appear on the Booker shortlist this century (the other being Ali Smith on a mere three occasions) with his inclusion being both quite surprising and thoroughly deserving. A trip to the Public Records Office in Inverness where he traced some family history led Burnet to pen this stirring true crime tome about a 19th century crofter.
DO NOT SAY WE HAVE NOTHING
Madeleine Thien This Booker-shortlisted tale is a sprawling, near 500-page epic which begins in 1990 Canada in the aftermath of the Tiananmen Square protests, and swings back and forth across the early days of Mao’s tenure and the artistic zeal of 1960s Shanghai. Above all, it’s a moving story of idealism, silence and music.
ZERO K Don DeLillo Having lost out to Bob Dylan for the Nobel Prize in Literature, DeLillo can comfort himself with a new novel which cemented his reputation as ‘high priest of the American apocalypse’. Set partly in a compound where corpses are preserved until new technology can bring them back to life, Zero K tackles many of the terrors of our age.
THE RADIUM GIRLS Kate Moore A torrid portrait of corporate malfeasance in 1920s America, Moore’s book tells of the women who clocked on in factories where their work with a luminous substance made from radium would slowly make them terribly ill. Their search for justice while impending death crept into view is written via an intimate, disturbing and compelling narrative.

Sign me up From flowers to cheese, Rebecca Monks urges you to send someone a little letterbox love this Christmas
Subscription boxes are, quite literally, the gift that keeps on giving. Think about it: the recipient gets regular gifts throughout the year, they get them through the post (who doesn't love post?), and you as the buyer can usually pay for this luxury in instalments. So, come Christmas time, you can spend that month’s pay cheque on an exorbitant mulled wine at the Christmas market instead. Here, we’ve rounded up a few of our favourite ideas, from monthly vinyl deliveries to regular stationery refresher kits.
NOT ANOTHER BILL This is for the giftee that is notoriously hard to buy for and / or loves surprises. When you sign up, you specify your style preferences and then each month you’ll get a mystery present in the post. It’s a chance to discover new artists and designers, and past presents have included a glass terrarium, See Concept sunglasses and a Meraki apothecary set. ■ notanotherbill.com, plans starting at £80 for three months
VINYL ME PLEASE That’s the title of the company as well as a direct command from us, by the way. This US-based company bills itself as ‘the best damn record club in the world’, and it’s got a point. VMP ships monthly vinyl packages across the globe, with between one and three archive records (depending on your plan), plus cocktail recipes and artistinspired artwork. It’s a great way to grow a record collection, and since the contents are a monthly mystery, it’s a good way to discover new music. ■ vinylmeplease.com, plans starting at $99 for three months
BLOOM AND WILD A blooming brilliant way to treat a flower-loving friend. Flowers are delivered in a letterbox-friendly package, and are designed to your specifications. You pick the first flower bouquet of the subscription, then choose from weekly, fortnightly, or monthly deliveries. ■ bloomandwild.com, plans starting at £15 per month
GLOSSYBOX This is the macdaddy of beauty boxes. Choose from a three, six or 12-month subscription, and get regular deliveries of products. The contents are a surprise, but past boxes have included goodies such as L’Occitane cleansing foam, Revlon nail polish and Philosophy body lotion. ■ glossybox.co.uk, plans starting at £10 per month
HAPPY PAPER CLUB Everyone knows a stationery addict. Happy Paper Club will make one of them very happy indeed, since it delivers papery goodness once a month, with everything from notebooks to gift cards included. ■ thegreengables.co.uk/store/happypaperclub, plans starting at £10 per month
CHEESE AND CHARCUTERIE CLUB Let’s be honest: you can never have enough cheese and meat. This club sends two British cheeses and two handmade British charcuteries, with a jar of chutney and some delicious crackers, through the post once a month. Yes please. ■ notonthehighstreet.com/craved/product/monthly-cheese-charcuterie-club, plans starting at £131.25 for three months 2016 WISHLIST 41

PAOLO NUTINI Paisley boy Paolo Nutini is headlining Edinburgh’s Hogmanay not once, but twice this year. After tickets for the Concert in the Gardens sold out in record time, a second gig was announced for The Night Afore (and it's not just a festive-sounding title, it really is being held on Fri 30 Dec, the night before NYE). 2016 has been a milestone year for Paolo, as it marks ten years since his first album, These Streets, was released. He’s achieved a remarkable amount in the last decade, including releasing two followup platinum albums, completing world tours, and of course, returning to play two of the biggest annual gigs in the Scottish calendar. ■ Paolo Nutini plays The Night Afore, Princes Street Gardens, Fri 30 Dec & Concert in the Gardens, Sat 31 Dec, as part of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay.
