12 Days of Christmas
Film, ballet, gig and club night suggestions for the run-up to the 25th
9
Events Ah Christmas, the perennial crowd-divider. While the C-word brings a warm and fuzzy glow to the innards and a glittery twinkle to the eye of many, it’s a cue for Grinch-like hibernation and extreme humbuggery in others. We’re not here to judge. But we are certainly here to offer suggestions on how best to spend the next six weeks. We’ve hunted high and low to find the most exciting dance and theatre shows (from The BFG at the Lyceum to a nightmarish remake of A Christmas Carol at the Citz, see page 13-14), where the good December club nights will be, who’s doing a remake of Dune: The Musical (turn to page 10 for the reveal on that one) and where you can stock up on handmade, locally designed gifts (see Five Best Craft Markets, page 10). This year’s gift guide (from page 27) is packed with inspiration, including the cheap, the high-end, the fairtrade and the vegan, from squiggly 80s-patterned jewellery and luxury cashmere wristwarmers to Spanish food hampers and sci-fi boxsets. So you’ll know exactly what presents to pick (or which hints to drop) when the time comes. Pour yourself a rum-laced chocolate espresso (see page 21 for the recipe), crank up the Charlie Brown Christmas album and prepare for Jesus’ birthday, the winter solstice, a merry Kwanzaa, a cosy Chanukah, or just a season of excellent telly or nights out. We’ll leave that bit up to you.

f this year’s stellar repertoire of festive music events happening across the Central Belt, none has us more excited than Dune: The Musical (Pilrig St Paul’s Church, Edinburgh, Fri 12 Dec) from the Irregular Owl Movements. The clubbing wing of Edinburgh slowcore titans eagleowl will provide a feast of seasonal sandworm serenades featuring Prehistoric Friends and other special guests in support. There’s also the fifth anniversary of Kid Canaveral’s Xmas Baubles (Portobello Town Hall, Edinburgh, Sat 13 Dec), which this year has KC joined by Afrobeat and Highlife outfit Ibibio Sound Machine (pictured), Lost Map labelmates Randolph’s Leap and more. Slowfest (Bloc+, Glasgow, Mon 15–Wed 17 Dec) returns to Glasgow with its celebration of stripped-back acoustic music sets which last year featured the likes of Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad. Phil Cunningham’s Christmas Songbook (Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh, Fri 19 & Sat 20 Dec) is a by-now traditional set of seasonal songs from the folk icon and guests will include Eddi Reader, Karen Matheson, John McCusker and Kris Drever. In a more cinematic vein, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra welcomes conductor Richard Kaufman for Hollywood Christmas (Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Fri 12 Dec; Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, Sat 13 Dec), a selection of seasonal film scores including It’s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street. The RSNO will also be live-scoring the film version of Raymond Briggs’ The Snowman (Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, Sat 20 Dec; Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Sun 21 Dec). Irving Berlin’s White Christmas (Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, Fri 19 Dec) starring Aled Jones and Tom Chambers will appear here for a night, while Dunedin Consort play junior and adult versions of Handel's Messiah (Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh, Sun 21 Dec). There will also be a bunch of seasonal tours hitting Scotland in the period running up to Christmas Day – although, for us, the really special ones tend to be gigs which feature local groups returning from a hard autumn on the road. A bunch of the best should include The Twilight Sad (O2 ABC, Glasgow, Fri 19 Dec) and We Were Promised Jetpacks (QMU, Glasgow, Sat 13 Dec). Other festive treats include The Phantom Band (The Arches, Glasgow, Fri 12 Dec), Glasvegas (Old Fruitmarket, Glasgow, Sun 21 Dec) and Edinburgh’s Stanley Odd (Garage, Glasgow, Sat 13), whose politicallyconscious rap made an impact during this year’s big events in Scotland.
Shop for beautiful items while sipping mulled wine with this spread of carefully picked illustrators, designers and makers showing off their work for an afternoon. The DCA shop will be open, where there'll be seasonal deals on stationery, art and craft wares too. DCA, Dundee, Sat 6 Dec, noon–5pm, free.
SUMMERHALL CHRISTMAS MARKET An all-day market, with edible, wearable and readable gifts on sale from the Marshmallow Lady, Jupiter Artland, Pickering’s Gin, A Pair of Blue Eyes, Coco Chocolate and Bruntsfield’s Edinburgh Bookshop. Have an adventure w ith a giant or try a da rk number with our pick of the festive theatric Dickensian al programme
THE BFG
TREASURE ISLAND
Sizing up a tall story
Digging a classic tale
Featuring Roald Dahl's lovable creation, The BFG (aka the Big Friendly Giant) is a family tale that never fails to delight audiences. And at Christmas time, it has become an alternative to a traditional pantomime for many theatres. With Dahl's winning formula of grossout humour, feisty little girl hero Sophie (based, of course, on Dahl's now-famous granddaughter) plus a dollop of adult-baiting, it's truly heart-warming without being overly sentimental. The Lyceum is staging this production adapted by David Wood and directed by Andrew Panton. 'If you love the book, I think you'll love this adaptation,’ says Panton. 'It's rude, fun, moving and totally bonkers.' Wilful anarchy is at the heart of Dahl's universal appeal, which encourages children to read, think for themselves and never, ever trust grown-ups. 'What Roald Dahl achieves is to help us all regress to childhood,’ insists Panton. ‘Whether we're reading his books or watching his stories told on stage or screen, you can't help rooting for the kid at the centre of the story; often we want to go with them into these magical, crazy lands that he creates.' Panton promises plenty of surprises, and the spectacular set design and costumes have been created by his long-time designer and collaborator Becky Minto. The two have found a way to recreate a vivid landscape of the imagination, despite the many challenges an ambitious adaptation presents. 'Scenically, it's quite a tricky story to tell in terms of creating the different worlds that Sophie and the BFG have adventures in. Let's just say that we've had a lot of fun messing about with giants and dreams and helicopters and Snozzcumbers'. The BFG is a show that will thrill all ages, but beware the villainous Gizzardgulpers and Fleshlumpeaters: they are looking a tad peckish and are bigger than you . . . (Lorna Irvine) ■ Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh, Fri 28 Nov–Sat 3 Jan.
The Pavilion Christmas show has long been acknowledged as the most traditional of Scotland’s pantomimes. With its emphasis on nods and winks to the grown-ups, a strong Glaswegian patter and familiar faces from TV – including River City’s Shellsuit Bob (Stephen Purdon) and singer Michelle McManus – part of its charm derives from the team’s consistency. James Mackenzie reprises his dandy villain (this time as a pirate), while there are also re-appearances from Real Radio's Cat Harvey, the kids from Dancepoint and stunt dancer Chuck. Back again for a new run, this time as Peck the Parrot in Treasure Island, comedian Johnny Mac has long established himself as a favourite in the Pavilion's colourful pantomimes. Having worked his distinctive catchphrase into the script, Mac is sure to be ‘enjoying himsel'’ again. A stalwart of four years, he explains his enthusiasm for the form: 'I love pantomime; it's one of my main passions in life. With the Pavilion being in the heart of Glasgow, the atmosphere in there is just excellent. It's a great venue to work in for facial expressions and physical stuff.' This intimacy between the raucous Pavilion audience and the stage helps make its annual production so striking. Mac, given the comedian's role and not responsible for pushing forward the plot, takes advantage of this freedom to follow his own flights of fancy. Although he has performed panto in Belfast, Londonderry and Crewe, the Pavilion holds a special resonance for him. 'I've grown up there and my birthday is on 29 December, so it does have a nostalgic, sentimental feeling.' He believes the secret to the Pavilion's success is the format. 'The reason it works is that there are jokes for the whole family: it’s modern, but also the home of variety.’ (Lorna Irvine) ■ Pavilion Theatre, Glasgow, Wed 26 Nov–Sun 18 Jan. 2014 WISH LIST 13

MIRACLE ON 34 PARNIE ST
Going to the other side of Oz
Roll up to this festive circus
Gags to curdle the eggnog
A musical prequel to The Wizard of Oz, the gravity-defying Wicked traverses the roads taken by Glinda (the Good Witch) and Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) in reaching their respective destinies. Adapted from Gregory Maguire's acclaimed 1995 novel, partially putting the record straight for Elphaba and referencing the iconic characters of the famous film, this touring version of Wicked retains the original West End show’s glamour. A more sophisticated story runs beneath its musical numbers, making Wicked an intelligent alternative to both trad panto and those jukebox musicals that have recently dominated the scene. (Gareth K Vile) ■ Edinburgh Playhouse, Wed 19 Nov–Sat 10 Jan.
With a background of live music in a gypsy style from The Crusty Suitcase Band, and intimate acrobatic displays reaching all the way up to the Spiegeltent’s roof, Scotch and Soda take traditional circus action and place it in a dusty bar to conjure a louche atmosphere. S&S hail from Australia, a country that seems to have conquered the world with its re-invention of acrobatics as a way to tell stories without losing the sense of awe inspired by some truly jaw-dropping stunts. From bottles of wine to bicycles, this company can use anything as a prop to instigate impressive displays of fearlessness and physical dexterity. (Gareth K Vile) ■ St Andrew Square, Edinburgh, Fri 21 Nov–Sun 21 Dec.
Both king and grand dame of panto, the inimitable Johnny McKnight returns for his festive Tron show after a successful year of gently molesting the sensibilities of Glasgow's theatre-going audiences with Wendy Hoose and News Just In. This time, family favourite Miracle on 34th Street is subject to his spangly makeover. Providing the caustic one-liners as Kristine Cagney Kringle, McKnight's Santa is a lady (of sorts) whose job in a department store may soon be the stuff of Christmas past. The most wonderfully warped selection box you'll get this year. And every stuffing gag in the book will get an airing. (Lorna Irvine) ■ Tron Theatre, Glasgow, Fri 28 Nov–Sun 4 Jan. PHOTO © IAN WATSON

PETER PAN
Three nightmares before Christmas
Old-school panto fun
Hooked on the lost boys
Since taking on the role of artistic director at the Citizens Theatre in 2011, Dominic Hill's critically acclaimed, highly distinctive productions have gained a certain reputation with discerning theatre-goers. Billed as 'a sort of pantomime', this production of Charles Dickens’ morality classic featuring Ebenezer Scrooge's three cautionary ghosts will boast Hill's bold visuals and ambitious subtexts. With Hill and adaptor Neil Bartlett at the helm, expect it to enchant and spook in equal measure, and it's highly recommended for family audiences seeking an edgier festive antidote to the usual treacle and tinsel fare. Bring your favourite curmudgeon and watch their cynicism melt. (Lorna Irvine) ■ Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, Sat 29 Nov–Sat 3 Jan.
Allan Stewart, Andy Gray and Grant Stott are experienced campaigners of the panto game: they last performed Aladdin a decade ago, and have become 'the dream team' for the King's since 2010 when they teamed up for Jack and the Beanstalk. As veteran as this threesome might be, they are mere saplings compared to the story itself: adapted from the more racy One Thousand and One Nights Arabic folktales, the story has been a pantomime staple for more than two centuries. Aladdin harks back to the classic pantomime model, with spectacle and familiar humour aimed at all the family, alongside suitably suggestive asides for adults. (Gareth K Vile) ■ King's Theatre, Edinburgh, Sat 29 Nov–Sun 18 Jan.
Gavin Mitchell – recently part of the cast for Still Game's hugely successful revival at the SSE Hydro – has built a reputation in recent years as a fine pantomime villain. Taking up the role of Captain Hook, Mitchell will undoubtedly combine a cheeky wit with melodramatic wickedness, becoming the perfect foil for River City star Scott Fletcher's boy who won't grow up. For many years, the King's Christmas show has set the gold standard for Scottish panto, with a lavish set, a talented chorus of singers and dancers, and the familiar names of television – and radio – playing up their rapport with an everenthusiastic audience. (Gareth K Vile) ■ King's Theatre, Glasgow, Sat 6 Dec–Sun 11 Jan.

Clubbing is an inte gr that Henry North al part of some people’s festive fu more has the skin ny on hot nights n. Thank the lord, then, in Glasgow and Ed inburgh
GLASGOW
EDINBURGH
• DJ LUCK & MC NEAT If you want to start the celebrations as soon as December hits, step back in time for some classic UK garage from the DJ / MC duo who gave the world 'A Little Bit of Luck', 'Masterblaster 2000' and 'Piano Loco'. Saint Judes, Fri 5 Dec.
• JUICE The trap and dubstep night reaches its second birthday and rather fittingly hosts two parties to celebrate. Expect beeps and bleeps from Martyn at Part 1 followed by Bok Bok going head to head and back to back with Tom Trago for Part 2. Sneaky Pete's, Thu 4 & Thu 11 Dec.
• SECONDCITY Good vibes and big tunes as Secondcity (aka producer Rowan Harrington) headlines this rescheduled date. Expect the no 1 smash 'I Wanna Feel' and other huge house cuts, plus support from Dale Howard with more to be confirmed. SWG3, Sat 13 Dec.
• HUNTLEYS + PALMERS This genre-hopping celebration of underground beats returns to Glasgow for its seventh birthday party. Producers John Talabot and Axel Boman in their Talaboman guise join the fun on the main floor, while Highlife explore the best electronic beats from around the world downstairs. The Art School, Fri 19 Dec. • PRESSURE XMAS PARTY Aclubnightthatneedslittleintroduction as your hosts Slam take charge with a pre-Christmas set of deep house and techno. Their very special guest, German superstar DJ Sven Väth, will oversee the tunes across three exciting hours. See interview, below. The Arches, Fri 19 Dec.
• BIG FOOT It’s sixth birthday time for Big Foot's crew. The line-up is to be confirmed but previous guests include Andrew Weatherall, Nina Kraviz and Move D, so expect someone of a similar stature as they draw on an impressive contact list. Sub Club, Sun 21 Dec.
O ORDE MEIKLE T The longer the better. Slam aka Stuart Meikle McMillan & Orde
For their Christmas party, Glasgow techno duo Slam have drafted in their pal Sven Väth STUART MCMILLAN Three-hour sets are quite normal for us. It's such a rewarding process, reading the room and building it up. It's what we enjoy the most.
S SM We'll start with cuts from tthe new album, Reverse Proceed. IIt's all based around some s sequences that are joined together in order to make one continuous piece of music. We wanted to showcase the deeper side of electronic music. We'd heard about the Cirklon sequencer but we didn't realise it was built in Paisley, so it was cool to make beats with some Scottish technology.
• VEGAS! The festive season kicks off with an old stalwart. Big band, swing, jive, showgirls, cocktails and Christmas seem like the perfect combination as Frankie Sumatra, Bugsy Seagull, Sam Jose and Nuno Endo once again take charge at Edinburgh's favourite retro club night. Voodoo Rooms, Sat 6 Dec.
• XPLICIT Expect liquid funk and fidgety drum & bass kicks as Xplicit collaborate with Nightvision to take over La Belle. Taking a break from running his own Signature Records, Irish DJ / producer Calibre nabs the headline spot while the full Xplicit crew are out in support. La Belle Angèle, Fri 12 Dec. • MUSIKA It's a busy weekend for Nightvision as they follow Xplicit by teaming up with Musika. Glasgow's king of bass and beats is joined by Heidi, Canada's queen of new house, alongside rising star Jasper James. Liquid Room, Sat 13 Dec. • JACKHAMMER Nestling neatly between Christmas and Hogmanay, techno night Jackhammer hit its 13th birthday. Unlucky for some but not for Edinburgh club heads as the evil genius that is Dave Clarke headlines, mashing up dark techno with a punk attitude alongside Gary Beck. Liquid Room, Sat 27 Dec.
OM We wanted to have tracks that worked on the dancefloor and for the head which was probably the most difficult thing to achieve. SM We choose Sven because he's been a hero to us for years, from the days at [Frankfurt club] The Omen. What I really like about Sven is he's stuck to his guns. He only plays vinyl, he's not a DJ who's a fantastic technical guy or a wizard but he chooses good music and puts it together in an interesting way. He has this fantastic knack of playing great records.
OM To really appreciate Sven you really need a longer set, so giving Sven three hours is a way for the crowd to really appreciate what he does. SM Musically we won't be doing anything different. Christmas is a great time of year because everyone is in great spirits but then, they're always in great spirits in Glasgow. JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE SOUP WITH PUMPKIN SEEDS
BISCOTTI BISCUITS
125g butter plus an extra knob for serving
270g caster sugar
1kg Jerusalem artichoke (peeled and sliced)
3⁄4 teaspoon of baking powder
300g plain flour
B thes oth e are t recipes a the A ken from rt Sc festi hoo ve from menu, av l's ailab Sat 1 le 3 thea rtsch Dec, see o ol.co food for m .uk/ ore deta ils.
2 whole eggs + 2 egg yolks
4 cloves of garlic, crushed
1 vanilla pod (1/2 teaspoon of essence)
1 large white onion
Zest of 1⁄2 orange and zest of 1⁄4 lemon
1 pint vegetable stock (chicken stock can also be used)
1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder
Toasted pumpkin seeds
135g whole almonds (makes 30-40 biscuits)
Salt and white pepper
Method This is a simple Italian festive treat, which could be a fabulous homemade gift or just something good to eat whilst sipping mulled wine by the fire. Preheat oven to 160C and line a baking tray with parchment paper. Sieve flour, sugar, cinnamon and baking powder into a large bowl. Whisk the eggs, yolks, vanilla pods and zest until fluffy and add this mixture gently into the dry ingredients until they're all combined, then fold almonds into the dough. Flour your work surface and shape the dough into a rectangle to gently fit into your baking tray. Time to bake! After 35 minutes your biscotti should be golden brown: remove from the oven and leave to cool. Whilst cooling, turn your oven down to 80C. Once cool, slice the slab of biscotti into fingers around 2-3cm thick and put back in the oven for about one hour until very crisp and smelling delicious. These tasty little snacks can be stored for up to two weeks if kept in an airtight container, meaning you can prepare them well in advance.
Method This simple winter warmer could either be a perfect pre-turkey starter on the 25th or just a lovely homely soup after a frosty day. Jerusalem artichoke is one of the crops that got people through the ‘hungry gap’ when last year’s produce had run out and the next season’s crops weren’t ready, because it’s at its best from November to March. Start by gently melting the butter in a medium pan. Tip in your onion and garlic and sauté on a medium heat, stirring often; this should take ten minutes until soft. Add in the star of the show, the Jerusalem artichokes, and cook for about 20-30 minutes until tender, then add the stock. Blitz it all up and season with the salt and white pepper to taste. Finally, scatter over your pumpkin seeds and serve with warm sourdough bread and a knob of butter. Artichoke soup and biscotti recipes supplied by Jameel Lombard, head chef at the Art School, Glasgow

chefs and chocolatiers Christmas catering this year. Lean on these those hardy souls hell-bent on doing their own x snacks to serve up a mug of hot chocolate or just some easy-to-fi starter to warm the bones, a boozy twist on
FRIJOLES NEGROS REFRITOS (REFRIED BLACK BEANS)
CHOCOLATE ESPRESSO
400g dried black beans
For the hot chocolate: 450ml whole milk
2 cloves chopped garlic ¼ diced white onion
15g (about 2 tbsp) of the best cocoa powder you can lay your hands on (we recommend Valrhona)
Tablespoon of rapeseed oil
40g of dark chocolate (about 60% cocoa solids)
50g Trex vegetable fat
A pinch of sea salt, muscovado sugar and rum (last two are optional)
Paprika, ground coriander, ground cumin, cracked black pepper, salt a teaspoon of each
For the honey cream: 1 vanilla pod 100ml double cream 1 tsp of your best honey (serves 4, with top-ups)
Method Warming, hearty and very moreish, these lightly spiced, creamy refried beans are amazing as a snack with tortilla chips. Place beans in a mixing bowl and cover with fresh water. Soak for at least four hours, preferably overnight. The beans will expand, so place the bowl inside a larger dish that will catch any escapees. Drain in a sieve and rinse under running water. Place the beans in a heavy-based pot, cover with water and bring to the boil. After two minutes, reduce to a gentle simmer. After an hour, check that they’re done by removing a couple with a slotted spoon and squeezing them (allow them to cool slightly). They should be soft and break up easily between your finger and thumb. Once cooked, drain and wash well under running water. Heat a pot on medium heat and add rapeseed oil. Add the onion and garlic and sauté until the onion is soft and translucent - probably about five minutes. Add the Trex, spices, salt and pepper and mix. Add the beans, mix until heated through. Remove from heat and mash beans with rest of ingredients. Mixture should be thicker than mashed potato with a nice shimmer. If mixture is too dry, add more Trex while mashing. Season to taste. Garnish with chopped coriander, chives, crumbled cheese . . . anything you want! Colin Campbell, The Squid and Whale, Glasgow, squidwhale.com
SCOTTISH MARKETS In amongst all the shows and bars packed onto St Andrew Square, this market leaves aside much of the continental tradition and goes firmly for the homegrown, including Scottish seafood, craft beer, produce and pastries to eat onsite or take home. ■ St Andrew Square, Edinburgh, Fri 21 Nov–Sun 4 Jan.
Method We've affectionately named this The Chocolatier's Breakfast; it gives you the most almighty buzz. For the slightly braver, it can be drunk almost savoury, without the muscovado, and sipped through the cold, sweet, honey cream. But it is equally amazing with dark brown sugar and a splash of booze. Score the vanilla pod lengthways, scrape the seeds out and put them in a bowl with the double cream and honey. Set aside in the fridge. Put the vanilla pod in with the milk and cocoa powder in a small pan and set over a low heat. If you wish, add spices at this point (a sprig of fresh rosemary, a pinch of chilli or freshly grated nutmeg are all excellent). When the milk is warm, but not boiling, take off the heat and let it infuse for ten minutes. Return to a low heat and add the chocolate and salt. Have a taste and add some muscovado sugar if it's not sweet enough. Take the cream, vanilla and honey from the fridge and whisk until thick, but still pourable. Once your hot chocolate is hot (but don't let it boil!) strain out your spices, return to the pot and whisk vigorously. Serve in wee cups, a bit like an espresso, with honey cream poured on top. Edda Holt, head chocolatier, Edward & Irwyn, edwardandirwyn.co.uk

Get drunk on Christmas spirit, with the help of these Glasgow & Edinburgh spots serving up martinis, Malaysian feasts and traditional turkey dinners, writes David Pollock
I
f ever a city was spoiled for choice in terms of good places to go drinking, it’s Glasgow – and never more so than at Christmas. We could recommend you a whole host of places, but we'll focus on establishments which offer more than just a fine quaffing experience. There’s The Arches (253 Argyle Street, 565 1000), which serves reasonably priced food and just happens to be part of one of Glasgow’s best nightclubs, or The Squid & Whale (372–374 Great Western Road, 339 5070), another excellent choice for food as well as drink. Two new(ish) brewery developments in the city have also brought together fine dining and drinking under one roof: WEST Brewery (Building 4, Templeton Building, 550 0135) – whose beer may be more familiar to visitors than their excellent German-style menu – and recent opening Drygate (85 Drygate, 212 8815), whose various dining areas are run by the team behind Leith's sublime The Vintage. The cocktail-dispensing bar at the Blythswood Square Hotel (11 Blythswood Square, 248 8888, pictured, right) is one of the city’s most essential stops for seeing and being seen, while most of the bars and restaurants in Merchant Square (71 Albion Street, 552 3038) offer a bustlingly popular night out. Anyone of a mind to celebrate their Christmas night out in a less traditional manner may also want to consider just how many great international restaurants Glasgow has. Prime examples are the Malaysian Banana Leaf (67 Cambridge Street, 333 9994), the recently-opened Chinese Ka Ka Lok (175 St George’s Road, 353 6528) and the modern Indian favourite The Dhabba (44 Candleriggs, 553 1249). Also recommended is the excellent vegan menu at hipster bar and venue Mono (12 Kings Court, 553 2400), plus old Scottish favourites Ubiquitous Chip (12 Ashton Lane, 334 5007) and Stravaigin (28 Gibson Street, 334 2665).

or those seeking a winter warmer before they get going on a night out, or a pick-me-up following a hard day’s shopping, Edinburgh’s many cocktail bars worth recommending are trumped by Bramble (16a Queen Street, 226 6343) and The Last Word Saloon (44 St Stephen Street, 225 9009). Both are under the same ownership and are dazzlingly proficient at the art of the (expensive) cocktail, with Bramble perfectly located in the city centre, and the Last Word more of a neighbourhood establishment in Stockbridge. If you’re after a traditional pint or a glass of wine in more relaxed surroundings, we’d suggest you venture Leithwards. Namely to Joseph Pearce (23 Elm Row, 556 4140) or The Vintage (60 Henderson Street, 563 5293). The former has a homely feel, Swedishinfluenced food and prime location; the latter is dedicated to sublime but unfussy food and drinks. We’d also recommend the recently refurbished Blackfriars for a craft beer or mulled cider (57–61 Blackfriars Street, 558 8684) and cosy but clubby basement bar Under the Stairs (3a Merchant Street, 466 8550) as a strong and capable contender in the fields of drink, food and raising a pleasant atmosphere. The Dome (14 George Street, 624 8624) is a more mainstream choice which has nevertheless become iconic for traditional Christmas dinner and drinks in a stunning, grand location. Elsewhere, your special night out could do a lot worse than calling on Spoon (6a Nicolson Street, 557 4567) for good, largely traditional Scottish food in a big and pleasantly-attired central location, or Mithas (7 Dock Place, 554 0008) if you’re a large group looking for a Christmas curry. Other dining spots doing good quality food include the very well-regarded Timberyard (10 Lady Lawson Street, 221 1222, pictured, left) and the Michelin-starred Castle Terrace (33–35 Castle Terrace, 229 1222) just around the corner.

n a recent interview, Adrian Edmondson bemoaned pretty much the entire concept of stand-up comedy. Gigs, he reckoned, are just way too long: 20 minutes is about all he can take before considering a hasty exit. What on earth, then, would he make of Lee Evans: Monsters (●●●●●), which clocks in at the 130-minute mark? We all know Evans as a human blur who sweats so profusely that a half-time change-of-suit is required, while his propensity for mimicry is so vast that he will merrily imitate pelicans, kangaroos, dogs, squids and sharks as well as more inanimate objects like table tennis balls and socks. What you might not know is that he fancies himself as some kind of balladeer and ends this show with a diabolical sub sub-Elton ditty about his wife. It’s difficult not to be in some way charmed by his hyper-eccentricity but if you hear the questions ‘have you ever seen . . . ?’ or ‘what’s going on with . . . ?’ once in his show you’ve heard them at least 50 times. In the opening salvo of Simon Evans: Live at the Theatre Royal (●●●●●), two Statler and Waldorf types speculate on who they are about to see, moving from Lee Evans to Lee
Mack to Stewart Lee before alighting on this Brighton-housed comic. A sort-of amalgam of 18 years in the stand-up business, the show is structurally split between his early London years and later Sussex-based career. Anyone familiar with his Fringe shows will recognise the material about his strange eyes and cutglass accent as well as a virulent strain of negativity towards Geordies, football and children (especially his own). Above all, he has amassed a selection of excellent jokes, and ties it all up rather wonderfully by retelling the moment he decided that the grim Antarctic adventures of Ernest Shackleton was suitable bedtime reading for his kids. A child enters the fray at the climax of Russell Howard: Wonderbox (●●●●●) for an unexpected sliver of gravitas in an hour-plus meander among a morass of nothingness. Sure, he does flirt with vague import via his experience of being trolled by an EDL activist with bad grammar, but most of the time you’re too busy gaping at the bulging biceps that this once scrawny stand-up appears to have borrowed from some comic-strip titan. Perhaps it’s a cunning tactic on his part to
deflect attention away from his ‘material’ which is yet another meander through the ‘crazy’ things that his family have said, more often than not ‘the other day’. The problem with Miranda Hart: My, What I Call, Live Show (●●●●●) is that you’re also not quite sure who you’re watching. While in manner and style, she appears to be a version of the real Miranda Hart, her sideways quips to the camera and bellowing of certain catchphrases show that she is simply too straitjacketed to her eponymous sitcom to wholly be herself. While his stand-up may never shake the universe off its axis, Jason Manford: First World Problems
(● ● ● ● ●) shows that the former One Show host is among the best in the business at blokeish observational humour. His matey charm proves successful partly because he also has a surprising eye for the off-kilter, such as the interview at his bank with a former Manc scally who is being distracted, hilariously, by a bumble bee. Possibly the one member of the animal kingdom which Lee Evans doesn’t attempt to impersonate.

!"#$%&'!#( )*+!,-)-+' In both Edinburgh and Glasgow, there are plenty independent record shops to hit up for all your festive house party DJing and gift buying. Nick Herd pops into six of the best MONORAIL MUSIC Good ol’ Monorail, one of Glasgow’s most well-established record shops in the hub of Mono. Have some organic cake and a craft pint from the café then peruse the wares of Stephen Pastel’s sprawling selection of new and old indie, rock, punk, metal, experimental and everything in between. You can’t really go wrong here, and the staff really know their stuff too. Plenty of local and touring live shows take place in the space too, plus Good Press (under the same roof) is an excellent spot for picking up local ‘zines, gig posters, cassettes and illustrations. ■ 12 Kings Court, Glasgow, 0141 553 2400, monocafebar.com
UNDERGROUND SOLU’SHN This Edinburgh shop specialises in dance but they do cater for all sorts. House, techno, dubstep and hip hop feature, plus there’s a surprising number of world, rock and experimental selections in stock too. There’s also plenty hardware and software for budding DJs and bedroom producers and it hosts occasional in-house performances. Don’t forget to browse under the shelves for secondhand ditties and check their eBay store for off-shelf items. ■ 9 Cockburn Street, Edinburgh, 0131 226 2242, undergroundsolushn.com
THE LIVING MOUNTAIN Buried beneath the crypts of Edinburgh’s Summerhall, you’ll find Lindsay Todd’s (House of Traps, Firecracker Recordings) vinyl and tape stash of avant garde, musique concrète and leftfield dance. An essential visit for those into musical obscurities and one of the few (or perhaps only) places in Scotland carrying stock of this nature. Check the Facebook page for opening hours as it’s appointment-only for the most part. ■ Room 2, Hope Park Church, Summerhall, Edinburgh, 07932 553388, facebook.com/ thelivingmountain
(and for) proper heads, they serve wax and DJ gear to fans of techno, electro and house all over the country. If you’re into MASSIVE CHOONS and seeking unparalleled dance music wisdom, then this will be your go-to shop, a location which has played a vital role in making Glasgow’s musical mark. ■ 35 Howard Street, Glasgow, 0141 221 9657, rubadubrecords.co.uk
The Living Mountain
CODA It’s easy to forget, or perhaps even write off, Edinburgh’s specialists in folk and traditional paraphernalia on the Mound, but dig a little deeper and you’ll find an interesting array of old re-issues plus a great jazz and world music section. An essential visit for the folkies, for sure, but you might be surprised at what else they have on offer. Heartily recommended for old and young nerds alike. ■ 12 Bank Street, Edinburgh, 0131 622 7246, codamusic.co.uk
MISSING RECORDS Something of a Glasgow gem under the train tracks on Union Street, this. Second-hand specialists with bargains aplenty if you’re willing to delve deep into their troves and stacks. Leaning more towards the metal and punk contingent, Missing Records caters for those into the rougher stuff (musically speaking), but also has a killer array of horror and trashy DVDs. ■ 247 Argyle Street, Glasgow, 0141 248 1661.

FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS SONG ‘Ring Out Solstice Bells’ by Jethro Tull. Dad plays this song every Christmas. This song makes me feel excited and happy; it’s one of the last relics of childhood that’s still available to me. It’s so good. It’s got hand claps and a flute and it’s not even about Christmas! It’s about the Solstice. ‘Mon the pagans!
ACTUAL CHRISTMAS DAY It’s a bit of a letdown, isn’t it? All those countdowns and soft-focused adverts, and it’s all led to this: THE SUN IS SHINING OUTSIDE. It’s supposed to be a snowy wonderland. And things just go downhill from there.
CHRISTMAS CHORES My birthday is on 20 December, so every year, two things happen: 1. I get asked by everyone: ‘Do you get combined presents then? That’s not very fair, is it?!’ And I have to smile and laugh and make a joke about it, but inside I’m crying because 2. Every year I get combined presents. So unfair! FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS FILM Without question, The e Muppet Christmas Carol. arol. This film has it all: Muppets, ppets, songs, dancing, tears,, the reprehensible nature ure of social inequality at Christmas time. Nowadays, adays, it actually makes me well up when I watch it each ch year. Yes, Muppets make me cry. CHAOS It happens every year:: my family gets together and we all argue for four full days, except ept for when we’re dancing to o tinselly, naff Christmas songs or getting drunk. I don’t see my two sisters together that often as we all live in different cities. So the volume is awesome.
PRESENTS Despite my birthday gripes, I actually don’t like receiving presents all that much. They’re never exactly what you’d choose yourself and you have to store them somewhere or figure out when to make the trip to the charity shop. I can’t help thinking about all the wastefulness, not to mention my nearest and dearest spending money they could probably put to much better use. Just paint me a little postcard or something. TENSIONS previous 11 months So, you've spent the pre doing exactly as you p please and trying best you can. And to muddle along as b at Christmas come the t questions, the ones that make you feel like a sorry teenager: ‘Oh, so yo you still haven't finished that thesis / learned to drive / found f nd a boyfriend?’ fou GOING BAC BACK TO YOUR AFTERWARDS FLAT AFT It’s cold. Y Your now-old cards are sitting on the shelf. There’s no food apart apa from that banana that's gone mouldy. mouldy And, worst, it’s em empty.
SPARKLES Oh the silver tinsel, the e ruby rubyred baubles, the twinkly kly lights. OH THE JOY!
