Let's be honest: more often than not, by the time you've bought the turkey, the tinsel and all the rest of the trimmings, you're skint. We feel your pain. If you're a little financially challenged this year, why not have a bash at hand-making gifts? Craft is making a comeback, after all. Here are some ideas to get you started, and if you don't feel like your skills are up to snuff just yet, we've also listed some courses at local craft shops and schools that will guide you through the process. HAND-SEWN ADVENT CALENDAR Sometimes, a Homer Simpson advent calendar from Tesco just won't cut it. Break with tradition and get c creative, by making a fabric, h hand-sewn advent calendar, w with 24 pockets to fill with ttreats of your choosing. You c personalise the design, can o even get creative with or t concept in general: how the about 24 hanging stars filled with personal messages? If you want some tips on how to do it, Cushie Doo run a course in Edinburgh, and the end product, as you can see, looks smashing. Intermediate Sewing: Advent Calendar, North Queensferry Community Centre, Edinburgh, Sun 15 Nov, £48.
JEWELLERY Wire, clippers and a jaunty pendant is all it takes to make a necklace these days, but there are so many options out there for industrious folk looking to gift their loved ones with fancy things. Local craft shops sell supplies for everything from earrings to bracelets, and there are plenty of how-to videos online to guide you through the process. If you prefer a more personal mode of instruction, however, the Makers Workshop offers a course for absolute beginners, with all tools and base metals provided. Beginners Jewellery Making Course, Makers Workshop, Glasgow, dates vary, 6–8.30pm, £145.
MAKEUP AND WASH BAG If there's one certainty in this as world, it's that come Christmas th time, you will be inundated with various scented bath productss k from relatives you don't speak to for the rest of the year. So what we're saying is, a wash bag will come in handy, and a homemade one has something extra special about it. They're pretty
simple to make – a little fabric, a little thread – but if you want some expert guidance, the Red Thread Studio in Edinburgh teaches a one-day course, covering everything from stitching seams to adding a zip. Makeup Bag / Wash Bag One-Day Class, Red Thread Studio, Edinburgh dates and prices tbc.
CHRISTMAS STOCKING Stockings are one of the best bits about Christmas: giant socks filled with little treats, what's not to love? If y're you make your own they're akes extra special, and all it takes is a little ingenuity and u some festive fabric. You ur can even embroider your w. own message on. D'aw. Intermediate Sewing: orth Christmas Stocking, North Queensferry Communityy Centre, Edinburgh, Sun 6 Dec, £37.
KNITTING AND D CROCHET Knitting is the new clubbing. Well, not really, but apparently Ryan Gosling does it, ot so there you go. Why not d whip hi up a nice i scarff or get out the needles and bobble hat for a pal this Christmas? If you feel like your purl needs some work, the Hands of Scotstoun club in Glasgow's West End meet weekly to work on a range of knitting and sewing projects, which they do for a range of charities both at home and abroad. So you can practice your craft and do some good, all in one. Hands of Scot Scotstoun, Heart of Scotstoun, Glasgow, weekly, Wed, 1-3pm, suggested donation £1.

SHIT-FACED SHAKESPEARE: A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM
ALI BAWBAG AND THE FOUR TEALEAFS A pantomime, a pie and a pint
Is this a bottle which I see before me? Having conquered the Fringe with a variety of the Bard's classics, Magnificent Bastard productions is bringing an unseasonal offering to Edinburgh's Christmas. A Midsummer Night's Dream – despite being full of inappropriate dating, dubious chemical seduction techniques and a man with an ass for a head – is regarded as a whimsical, romantic foray. Fortunately, the Shit-Faced formula insists that one actor, if not the audience, will be drinking throughout the performance. As the actor gets drunker, their take on Shakespeare becomes clearer. 'In the six years we've been performing, there is not a lot that hasn't happened,' admits Reverend Lewis Ironside, artistic director. 'We've had partial nudity, full frontal nudity, audience nudity, audience fondling, attempted dancing, bad singing, £280 worth of pizza ordered unbeknownst to us, simulated acts of a sexual nature, actual acts of a slightly sexual nature, group acts of a very sexual nature simulated by the entire front row against their will, acrobatics, matchmaking, feminist diatribes, philosophical treatise, Pokémon battles, rap battles, selfies, self-help advice sessions, self flagellation, power drill usage, fire extinguisher discharge, parental phone calls, competitive sausage roll eating, racial protests and a sword fight conducted with an audience member's prosthetic arm . . . occasionally some actual Shakespeare occurs.' A Midsummer Night's Dream, which alternates between broad humour and a courtly romance, seems a perfect choice for inebriated deconstruction. As Ironside concludes: 'The idea of the love potion making the male characters behave abhorrently is such a brilliant juxtaposition to the alcohol they may also have drunk. It's a great combo!' ■ St Andrew Square, Edinburgh, Wed 9–Sun 13 Dec.
Aside from becoming an internationally respected production house, Glasgow's A Play, A Pie and A Pint offers an escape from the child-friendly Christmas fare with a new pantomime based on both traditional antics and Glasgow's distinctive patter. Co-author Gary McNair is well known for monologues – his Crunch, a witty yet serious look at the credit crisis found a home in PPP's lunchtime slot – but he has teamed up with Davey Anderson, a veteran of political and musical comedy theatre for a modern take on Ali Baba. 'I guess it is a little more adult,' he says. 'But not in a Jim Davidson way. Panto has the potential to be mature entertainment: when you go and see the best ones like Johnny McKnight’s or Brian James’, for example, they’re working on multiple levels. The kids love it because it works for them but the adults are hooked in as well on big laughs that are perhaps going over the kids' heads, kind of like The Simpsons.' Since McNair and Anderson are members of the DM Collective, a group dedicated to making political satire, it is unsurprising that their pantomime has sophistication alongside the jollity. McNair recognises that its roots in working-class entertainment don't preclude big ideas as well as big laughs. 'Pantomimes always have so many themes relevant to everyone: hardship suffered by the poor, greed versus good, the toppling of evil empires. With the knowledge that A Play, Pie and A Pint has a more mature audience, we’re freed up a little more to push the direct political references and ramp up the satire a little.' This doesn't mean that there's no fun. 'The joy of writing with Dave,' McNair continues, 'is his comic timing is exceptional and he has real integrity. And it helps that we can have a bloody good swear. It’s also very, very silly.' ■ Òran Mór, Glasgow, Mon 30 Nov–Wed 23 Dec. 2015 WISH LIST 13

THE LITTLE MERMAID
RAPUNZEL
A seasonal splish and splash
The Citz lets down its hair
THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE
Johnny McKnight has established himself as the king of contemporary pantomime, blending pop culture, asides for adults and good humour into an irresistible mash-up. Back in Stirling after occupying the Tron last year, he is offering a fishy tale for Christmas. There's little chance that this will be a turkey, though . . . ■ Macrobert Arts Centre, Stirling, Wed 25 Nov– Sun 3 Jan.
The Citizens doesn’t do pantomime. Rather, this seasonal show for all the family has a strong moral message. With Lu Kemp – recently celebrated for her production of Bondagers at the Lyceum – at the helm, Rapunzel offers an introduction to serious theatre for young people, with the inevitable slice of fun. ■ Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, Sat 28 Nov– Sun 3 Jan.
Perhaps the show that will be closest to the religious version of Christmas, CS Lewis' popular Christian allegory is adapted for the stage by Theresa Heskins. A trip to Narnia – and a clear dramatic battle between good and evil – might be the perfect break from the shouting, commercial winterval festivities. ■ Lyceum, Edinburgh, Sat 28 Nov–Sun 3 Jan.
SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS
TRACKS OF THE WINTER BEAR
A Hoff-ully big adventure
Hi-ho and hijinks
Sinister and snowy tales
The addition of legendary Scottish actor Gregor Fisher (Rab C Nesbitt) to the King's pantomime team promises that Glasgow's traditional favourite will have a new layer of fast-paced wit and slapstick. Alongside the songs and audience participation, there's even the busdriver from BBC's Balamory (Juliet Cadzow) to bring a touch of class to the banter. ■ King's Theatre, Glasgow, Fri 4 Dec–Sun 10 Jan.
Refusing to give into Yule jollity, Edinburgh's Home of New Writing has a double bill from Rona Munro (The James Plays) and Stephen Greenhorn (Sunshine on Leith) with a live musical score from David Paul Jones. The promise of 'lovers, loners and carnivores' suggests that 'he's behind you' might have a more sinister twist. ■ Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, Sat 5–Thu 24 Dec.
Turkish Delights in store
PETER PAN In the past few years, the SECC has hosted Christmas shows that will stop at nothing – live horses, aerial antics, massive sound system and John Barrowman with a Scottish accent – to entertain. THE UNIVERSITY CAROL SERVICE You'd be hard pushed to find a more magical setting for a carol concert than St Giles' Cathedral. Standing proudly on the Royal Mile, this building was founded h in 1120, and is known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh. On Sun 6 Dec, the Edinburgh University Carol Service will take place there, with music from the university's singers
accompanied by conductor / organist John Kitchen. This event is a popular one, so get there early: doors open at 5pm. St Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh, Sun 6 Dec, 6pm. FORGOTTEN CAROLS Ali Burns has been on the hunt for Britain's long-lost Christmas carols, and by gosh, she may well have found them. Along with some help from reader Tom Pow and SongTribe, this event explores some of the lesser-known Christmas carols she's uncovered. Scottish Storytelling Centre, Edinburgh, Sat 12 Dec, 7.30pm. EDINBURGH BACH CHOIR CHRISTMAS CONCERT If you like
and music collective return for another eclectic party in this distinctive Tollcross space. Central Hall, Thu 17 Dec.
• HIGHLIFE WITH AUNTIE FLO The ever-more popular
your Christmas music with a classical edge, head to the Edinburgh Bach Choir's festive concert. This is a carol concert featuring a hefty amount of brass and organ music, as well as highlights from the Messiah. St Cuthbert's Church, Edinburgh, Sun 13 Dec, 7.45pm. RAYMOND GUBBAY CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT To add a little extra something, these carols are all performed in period costumes, so you can pretend you are a Dickensian character just trying to make it through the holidays with a little music. Pieces set to be performed include Darke's 'In The
Bleak Midwinter', Corelli's 'Allegro' and 'Pastorale' from Christmas Concerto. It's going to be very w classical, and very wiggy. Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Fri 18 Dec, 7.30pm. CHRISTMAS CAROL SINGALONG Carols were made to be sung by the masses, and that's exactly what happens at this Christmas Eve (Eve) event at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. The London Concert Chorus and Orchestra are playing all the classics, from 'O' Little Town Of Bethlehem' to 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day', and you're invited to belt it out with them. CRAFT BEER
GIN
There’s a craft beer for every season and Christmas is no exception. We asked booze enthusiasts at Glasgow’s shop of liquid treasures, Valhalla’s Goat, what they’ll be drinking this yuletide.
Gin is in this Christmas (just as it was last Christmas, and probably will be again next Christmas), and with so many different varieties out there to choose from, it can be hard to know which brand and blend to opt for. So we asked Tony Pert, general manager at Edinburgh gin bar The Jolly Botanist, to pick five varieties he thinks would work well for a wee tipple this festive season.
• WILLIAMS BROTHERS NOLLAIG It smells like Christmas in a bottle because it's made with foraged spruce tips. It's fruity, soft, pine-y, resinous, spicy, warming and great with food. Kernel lot is 3% abv. Tropical hoppy aroma, zesty on the palate with a comforting malty / bitter finish.
• BROCKMANS Brockmans says its aim was to create a gin 'so intensely smooth and delicious you would happily drink it neat over ice'. It makes Tony's list since it's 'very fruity', and 'great for first time gin drinkers to get them started'.
• CAMDEN TOWN GENTLEMAN'S WIT Like a cup of Earl
• ROCK ROSE This variety is made in Scotland, and is described as
Grey tea and a slice of lemon meringue pie but smooshed into a delicious beer. Made with lemon and bergamot, this'll be on our Christmas breakfast menu with the smoked salmon.
'flavourful and fresh, zesty yet berryful, with a long, smooth finish'. The makers credit the drink as being 'blessed with the freshest air and the purest Highland water' and it is Tony's personal favourite.
• ANCHOR OUR SPECIAL ALE This special seasonal ale from San Franciscan lot Anchor changes every year. Last year's offering was lovely warming cinnamon / gingerbread / toffee / honey but with a good citrusy hop finish. Expect the same but different this year.
• EDINBURGH CHRISTMAS GIN Distilled in the shadow of
• CROOKED STAVE VIELLE ARTISANAL SAISON (CRANBERRY AND SPICE) We can't get enough of Colorado's
• MONKEY 47 This German gin is a classic choice, and as
• THE KERNEL TABLE BEER This belter from that London
Edinburgh Castle, this seasonal libation is heady with rich spices and sweet oranges, and has 'an almost honeyed, thicker mouth-feel thanks to the miraculous addition of myrrh'. Very Christmassy indeed.
Crooked Stave barrel-aged complexity. It's got a lovely hibiscus / vanilla, almost ice-creamy aroma and plenty of dry fruit and cinnamon flavours.
Tony notes, it is 'very floral and tasty, and a bit unusual'. A range of handpicked botanicals give this tipple its unique flavour, and the label design is suitably vintage and lovely.
• SAMUEL SMITHS ORGANIC CHOCOLATE STOUT This is our go-to wind-down beer – in front of the fire, with some Stilton. Cocoa-mad aromas, meaningfully chocolatey taste with a hint of malt and hops.
• OPIHR If you're after something out of the ordinary, try this oriental spiced gin. It 'has bursts of citrus balanced with the rich, earthy aromas and a soft spice', and Tony recommends serving it with orange and ginger.

COFFEE
CHEESE
The post-Christmas dinner lull is a real thing, friends. Once the turkey has been demolished and you've polished off the last morsel of figgy pudding, everyone knows there's nothing to do but nap. Unless, that is, there's coffee, and we're here to tell you that there should be. We asked Graeme Crawford over at Glasgow's Papercup Coffee to recommend some of the best blends and varieties to keep you perky over the festive season.
No Christmas meal is complete without a cheese board. We asked the folks at Scotland's most established cheesemonger, I.J Mellis, what they’ll be having with crackers and port this festive season.
• PAPERCUP ETHIOPIAN CHRISTMAS BLEND Papercup's
• ISLE OF MULL This is a classic Scottish Cheddar with a good, sharp bite and sweet mellow finish. Year round we stock large truckles, but at Christmas we bring in two different sized mini truckles, which make ideal gifts or centre pieces for after a Christmas dinner.
motto is 'sustainable, ethical, unique', and their coffee follows suit. This blend features naturally processed Ethiopian beans, and according to Graeme, it 'tastes all cocoa and fruit – like a Christmas pudding in a cup'.

lighter, gentler cheese than its French cousin. This means it can be enjoyed by all the family and will sit happily next to more delicate flavours without stinking out the house!
• RIGHT SIDE COFFEE According to Graeme, 'these coffee roasters from Spain know what they are doing sourcing great coffee and doing it justice'. They're Barcelona-based, and if you're after something a little sunshiney this Christmas, this is your best bet. • COLD BREW COFFEE No, we don't mean iced coffee. That's a summer thing. If you're the kind of maverick that likes cold beverages on cold winter nights, try this: it's cold-brewed coffee beans, steeped in cold water, then strained. Graeme says 'it's a perfect non alcoholic option at Christmas, served cold over ice with a slice of lime.'

Christmas. Whether enjoyed soaked in port or just as it is, Stilton is an essential part of a British Christmas and Colston Bassett is one of the best – at once crumbly and creamy with just the right level of tang.
• EVE A lovely little goats’ cheese washed in cider brandy and wrapped in a vine leaf, with a slightly more pungent aroma than many goats’ cheeses. Delicate on the tongue and so creamy. • SMOKED ARDRAHAN An unusual soft, cold smoked cheese with flavours reminiscent of smoky bacon. It adds something a bit different to a festive cheeseboard, and really stands out. • GRIMBISTER Lastly, I always recommend Grimbister from Orkney at Christmas time, because I grew up eating Wensleydale with Christmas cake – and this beats that hands down.

Staying central, the Howlin’ Wolf offers original cocktails, world beer and a towering gantry of spirits – with the added bonus of a 3am licence. If you're after some uptown swank this Christmas (not the Bruno e funk that B Mars sings of) your best bet is to head into New Town, where find a ere you'll y wide range of cocktail joints and a selection of suitably stylish bars. One such place is The Bon Vivant on Thistle Street, which is known for low-lit ambience and a solid cocktail menu. Also in the neighbourhood is 99 Hanover Street; the bar boasts a wide range of wines, spirits and beers, and if you're after something a little more personal, you can choose from a range of table packages featuring a selection of bevvies, which range in price from £15–£100 each. For soft lighting (read: candlelight), try Bramble on Queen Street. One of Edinburgh's worst-kept secrets, this below-street-level is bar is best for smaller groups, since the layout is basically all nooks and crannies. There are 22 lovely cocktails to choose from, and the well-trained staff will no doubt be on hand to help you figure out which concoction is the one for you. Leithwards, head to the walk for Victoria, which has a laid-back cosmopolitan vibe and some trendy drink choices. There's also a DJ there spinning tracks, should you feel the need to bust a move or two. Otherwise, try The Brass Monkey Leith, the sister to the famous Drummond Street establishment, where you can find a strong selection of gin, whisky and rum. If you and your co-workers prefer the charms of the Old Town, head to OX184 on the Cowgate for some craft beers and world whisky. It's open until 3am daily, and there are plenty of wide, open spaces for some good ol' office mingling. Another solid option in that area is Blackfriars Bar (where we at The List had our own Christmas party last year), which has a range of good brews on tap and a lovely outdoor area if it's not too crisp outdoors. Elsewhere, Dragonfly on the West Port is renowned for its cosy atmosphere with a cocktail-centric drinks menu, all of which makes for a fun festive night out. If you like your drinks with a side of swing, head to the Jazz Bar on Chambers Street, where you'll find a great selection of spirits and an even better musical lineup. (Rebecca Monks)

Covering everything from his early adventures at the Edinburgh Fringe (we get a mention: hurrah!) through to the hacking scandal that pushed him forward into the public arena more than he would normally have wished, Easily Distracted is a treat for fans of his early (and middle) funny work and the more recent seriousness of Philomena. Published by Century.
DAFT WEE STORIES
A BOOK FOR HER
THE WHOLLY VIABLE
LIMMY
BRIDGET CHRISTIE
PHIL KAY
You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you might even feel a fair bit nauseous at the antics within the many, many short tales (71 to be precise) which comprise Brian Limond’s debut book. Featuring not-so subtle titles such as ‘The Fat Workie’, ‘Crap Films, ‘Arnold’s Arse Eye’ and ‘Your Shite is My Shite’, Limmy’s daft wee stories have underlined his transition from niche Glasgow act to UK star. Published by Century.
As an accompaniment to her latest semi-surrealistic, anti-misogynist, quasi-political tract stage show, A Book for Her dissects how Christie went from delivering wilfully obscure and little-loved Fringe hours to becoming a thoroughly hailed Edinburgh Comedy Award winner. Essentially, she discovered the magic formula on how to make feminism funny. Published by Century.
Anyone seeking the rationale behind Phil Kay’s comedy mindset might feel vaguely frustrated here. But for a vivid literary representation of the wild freewheeling turbo ride that has been select sections of his life (both good and bad), The Wholly Viable (see what he did right there?) is a blast. He also seems to get into all manner of scrapes while in charge of a bicycle. Published by Heroes Books.
MODERN ROMANCE
LOVE ALL THE PEOPLE
TOAST ON TOAST
AZIZ ANSARI
BILL HICKS
MATT BERRY & ARTHUR MATHEWS
Recently outed as the sixth highest paid comedian in the world (ahead of Louis CK but behind dodgy ventriloquist Jeff Dunham), the American stand-up and scene-stealing star of Parks and Recreation received a tidy seven-figure advance for this, his first book. It's an idiosyncratic take on 21st-century dating and its comedic pitfalls. We hope his sociologist collaborator Eric Klinenberg got a decent slice of that pie. Published by Allen Lane. 26 WISH LIST 2015
list.co.uk
He may have been on the end of a curious backlash in recent times, but the Southern preacherman’s standup shows (aka The World According to Bill), remain the template for most of the angry, socially aware comedians who have followed in his wake. Love All the People features letters, lyrics, interviews and routines which give an insight into an often difficult soul and utterly mesmeric talent. Published by Constable.
Hold on to your breeches for some ‘cautionary tales and candid advice’ from everyone’s favourite struggling actor extraordinaire. The man with the propensity for doing it doggy style with the wife of an actorly rival might not be best placed to spread his wisdom to young upstarts of stage and screen. But that’s exactly what he does here with memories of everything from RADA to It’s a Right Royal Knockout. Published by Canongate.

Tired of clutter? There are plenty of ways to give gifts this Christmas without buying yet another 'thing'. Rowena McIntosh investigates your options
W
hether it’s for someone who is particularly tricky to buy for or someone you want to spend some old-fashioned quality time with, there are plenty of gift options that don’t need wrapping. If they like a tipple but their drinks cupboard is already groaning with bottles, why not add instead to their booze knowledge. In Glasgow, Good Spirits Co. host gin, rum, whisky and port masterclasses while Glasgow Wine School offer your taste buds a chance to travel with wine tastings themed by different regions. In Edinburgh, the Hanging Bat has beer connoisseurs catered for with monthly Meet The Brewer sessions, while the Whiski Rooms offer a variety of tastings including pairings with cheese and chocolate. Other boozy options include brewery and distillery tours with West Brewery, Tennent’s and Edinburgh Gin, all offering a chance to see behind the scenes before sampling the finished product with a whole new appreciation of its back story. For foodies, Cook School at Tennent’s Training Academy offer masterclasses in culinary delights including pizza, American BBQ and South Asian curry while Edinburgh School of Food & Wine host one-off evening courses focusing on topics including game, steak and fish. For fans of The Great British Bake Off, both venues also offer baking sessions on themes including macarons and chocolate work. Sceptical Paul Hollywood not included. Fitness types who don’t need any more luminous lycra might enjoy trying a new sport. Snow Zone in Glasgow offers vouchers redeemable against ski, snowboarding and ice climbing lessons,
or you can indulge your inner child with sledging. Over at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome you can join an introduction to track cycling and ride a fixed gear bike on the Commonwealth-banked velodrome, just like Sir Chris himself, but slower. The Edinburgh International Climbing Arena (pictured) offers instructed taster sessions to get you scaling the largest climbing arena in Europe, or you can test your nerve on the aerial assault course with zip wires and obstacles 100ft above the ground. For sports fans not wanting to work up a sweat, stadiums including Hampden and Murrayfield offer you the chance to walk in the national team's footsteps on guided tours. If that all sounds too much like hard work post-Christmas, there’s always relaxing spa treatments instead. In Glasgow, you can visit 15 Royal Terrace Day Spa for a mini manicure or pedicure, while Spa in the City offer a salt and oil Scrub that’ll leave your skin super soft and delicious. In Edinburgh, Zen has the answer to a peely wally winter complexion with spray tans and fake bake, while over at the Scotsman Spa & Health Club you can chose from a variety of luxurious Aveda facials and body treatments. The Guerlain Spa at the Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh – The Caledonian has a series of harmonising massages to relieve any residue festive stress or you can take a lesson in make-up artistry and master the art of your new eyeliner pen. If all else fails, you can always give the gift of laughter, with The Stand Comedy Club in Glasgow and Edinburgh offering gift vouchers for any performance. They'll even gift wrap it for you, so you don't have to break the 'gifts that don't need wrapping' rule. 2015 WISH LIST 41
