COLD COMFORT The weather outside may be frightful but the festive season is full of wintery activities to warm your cockles, as Anna Millar discovers

hen does the Christmas season start for you? Is it a week before the 25th December, when you frantically check websites to see who’s still offering last-minute gift deliveries? Or is it OK to start drinking mulled wine as soon as Hallowe’en decorations come down from the shops? In Glasgow, the festive season officially kicks off this year – as always – with the Christmas Lights (Thu 15 Nov) being switched on in George Square. This annual light fantastic is followed three days later by the Glasgow Style Miles Christmas Parade (Sun 18 Nov) on Buchanan Street, before the much-loved Glasgow on Ice (from Sat 24 Nov) is unveiled under the twinkly lights of George Square. A snowball’s throw away, a piping glühwein can be sipped at St Enoch Square’s Traditional Christmas Market (from Sun 18 Nov), with almost 30 stalls of Christmas ornaments, toys and candles, and the obligatory bratwurst samples and heart-shaped gingerbread on sale. Across in Auld Reekie, the festive fun is unleashed with Light Night (Thu 29 Nov) as Edinburgh is lit up in all its picturesque glory, and the Edinburgh Wheel, carousel and markets open their doors for their annual six-week stint. Follow the lights to the German Christmas Market in Princes Street Gardens or get your skates on for the return of the ice rink. (See page 19 for more tips on festive food and drink options.) Back in Glasgow and beyond the ice rinks and

markets, culture vultures can check out what’s ‘behind yoooou’ with the plethora of pantomimes (see page 13 for festive theatre highlights from across Scotland); while music lovers need look no further than the BBC SSO: Christmas at the Movies (Sun 23 Dec) at City Halls, for a concert celebrating Oscar-worthy sound scores. Glasgow Concert Hall, too, has a bumper selection of

talent with classical offerings from Katherine Jenkins, Lesley Garrett, the RSNO and more. At the SECC, the Irn-Bru Carnival (from Fri 21 Dec) is back in all its whirl of waltzers, crash of dodgems and stomach churning glory. Look out, too, for the return of the Santa Dash (Sat 1 Dec) at Milngavie’s Mugdock Park, where young and old alike can walk or run anything from 1–5km for charity. Flashing red noses and Santa suits at the ready! Back in Edinburgh, for first-class festive frolics, head to The Stand comedy club for their Christmas Special (Mon 10–Sat 15 Dec). Across town at the Queen’s Hall, indulge in the ultimate Christmas anthem (classically speaking) with Baroque’s mesmerising Christmas Oratorio (Fri 14 Dec). The Saturday before Christmas, there's a night of festive songs from some of Scotland’s finest singer-songwriter talent, all in the name of charity at the annual Christmas Songwriters’ Club (Sat 22 Dec, now moved up from Leith Dockers Club to Queen's Hall). This year's bill will feature fresh, specially created works from Adam Stafford, Withered Hand, Alan Bissett, Jesus Baby, Machine Room and others. Those looking for fun in the great outdoors can enjoy the Christmas Panda Breakfast at Edinburgh Zoo (Sat 1–Sat 22 Dec), or take part in the Edinburgh Christmas 5k Fun Run (Sun 2 Dec) at Inverleith Park. THE ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE APPRECIATION SOCIETY Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, Tue 4–Sat 22 Dec If fairytales, sing-a-longs and grown men in ballgowns are on your festive wish list, perhaps you’d better steer clear of Scotland’s New Writing Theatre this Christmas. Following on from the success of last year’s The Tree of Knowledge, an inspired time-travel comedy starring David Hume and Adam Smith, the Traverse is turning to another of Edinburgh’s most celebrated figures, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who stars in a new play created by anarchic theatre company Peepolykus. The show, which follows the Sherlock Holmes creator’s interest in spiritualism, reunites writers Steven Canny and John Nicholson with Trav artistic director, Orla O’Loughlin, who helmed their hit show, The Hound of the Baskervilles. ‘Orla seems to enjoy big ideas presented in odd ways,’ says Nicholson. ‘She also loves comedy and she’s not too earnest. Not all directors are like that.’ The writing duo enjoyed revisiting the crazy world of Arthur Conan Doyle, researching

spiritualism by visiting Edinburgh’s Association of Spiritualists. The resulting show, which features plenty of seance fun as well as some impressive stunts, draws much of its drama from the tensions in the author’s character. ‘Conan Doyle spent the last 20 years of his life touring the world as arguably spiritualism’s strongest advocate,’ says Nicholson. ‘The creator of the literary world’s most rational and investigative mind promoting spiritualism? There’s surely something for us all in there.’ ‘He’s a figure who manages to create a real sense of wonder and awe through both his writing and the way he lived his life,’ adds Canny. ‘He’s full of promising contradictions.’ The pair feel the show offers an offbeat alternative to the usual seasonal fare. ‘It’s not a traditional Christmas offering,’ says Canny. ‘It’s funny and warm-hearted but there’s no dame and surprisingly little cross-dressing. Edinburgh seems to want stimulation and something different in their Christmas entertainment. We hope that’s what we’ve written.’

Having scored widespread approval for his first season in charge at the Citz, scooping the CATS' Best Director gong for his production of Pinter’s Betrayal, Dominic Hill is turning his talents to the Gorbals theatre’s annual Christmas play. And while he has plenty of experience in overseeing festive shows, both as artistic director at Dundee Rep and, subsequently, the Traverse, it’s with particular excitement that he’s plunging into this production of Sleeping Beauty. ‘I think there is something really special about a Christmas show at the Citz,’ he says. ‘The atmosphere of the Victorian auditorium always reminds me of seeing pantos in my local theatre when I was a kid. There’s a kind of magic about the Citizens Theatre that I associate with childhood and those first visits to Christmas shows. So I can’t wait to try and recreate that same feeling for young people today.’ The script for the show was written by award winning director Rufus Norris, who created the opera Dr Dee with Blur’s Damon Albarn for the 2011 Manchester International Festival. Set in a Tim Burton-style dark fantasy world, and with a flatulent fairy and a fearsome ogre among the cast, the adaptation provides a fresh take on a familiar tale. ‘I’ve always loved Rufus’ script,’ agrees Hill. ‘It’s very funny, very dark, quite scatological and ultimately redemptive. Just what a Christmas show should be.’ And it’s not just the quality of the script that marks Sleeping Beauty out as a must-see. Having contributed an atmospheric soundtrack to this year’s production of King Lear, Paddy Cunneen is creating the music for the Christmas play, all of which will be live and performed by the cast. ‘I always love working with Paddy on shows,’ says Hill. ‘There will be a strong element of singing but it will be very playful and innovative. We’ll discover the role music will play during rehearsals. I’m hoping it will be a little like the music for a Monty Python film – funny and very silly.’ 2012 WISHLIST 13

The world may be changing at a terrifying lick, but at least you always know what you’re getting when you book tickets for the King’s panto. Proudly traditional in nature the show regularly boasts stunning sets, costume changes galore, great dollops of local humour, sing-a-longs and, of course, the performing dream team of Allan Stewart, Andy Gray and Grant Stott. This year’s outing is Mother Goose, bound to be well worth a gander, though the story is of secondary importance to Stewart’s perfect parodies of popular TV and music, Gray’s clowning and the relentless lampooning of villain Stott’s beloved Hibs, not to mention his status as the friendly face of Lothian Buses (the ‘pus on the bus’). With enough double-entendres thrown in to keep grown-ups happy, this really is one for the whole family.

Scotland’s only permanent theatre ensemble may have a reputation for creating award-winning productions of classic texts, but that doesn’t mean they rest on their laurels when it comes to entertaining the masses at Christmas. As purveyors of distinctive adaptations of well-kent fairytales (last year’s Cinderella was set on a houseboat that doubled as a home for retired magicians), what the Rep’s festive shows lack in sweetie showers and blokes in drag they more than make up for in fine acting, stunning design and spooky atmosphere. Award-winning writer for young people Mike Kenny has scripted this year’s adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s much-loved tale about a young girl rescuing her best friend from the freezing clutches of the malevolent Snow Queen. Kenny’s previous credits include The Little Mermaid, which played to appreciative audiences at the Rep a few years ago.

The last couple of years have seen a welcome spike in the number of Christmas shows aimed at very young children and babies. This December’s collaboration between the Arches and leading company for children, Catherine Wheels, invites toddlers as young as three to enjoy a new glitterfuelled adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s heart-warming tale about a homely-looking bird and his quest for love and acceptance. Written by Andy Manley, who scored a big hit at the same venue last year with the funny and inventive Rudolph, this version of Andersen’s story casts its hero as a lover of disco, whose quest for a good boogie is almost as important as his desire to be loved and accepted. Expect plenty of fingerclickin’ tunes and a glitterball on almost permanent rotation.

For two decades, the panto at Glasgow’s King’s was synonymous with Gerard Kelly’s amazing fright wig and infectious cries of ‘Hiya paaals!’ Kelly may have passed away in 2010 but performers Karen Dunbar and Gavin Mitchell have quickly established themselves as the keepers of the panto flame. This year Dunbar returns for her fifth festive outing, belting out gags and show tunes in her role as Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother, the perfect foil to Mitchell’s grotesquely funny Ugly Sister. And the starry casting doesn’t end there. Scottish comedian and DJ Des Clarke also takes to the stage as Cinders’ best pal, Buttons, while We Will Rock You star Jenny Douglas appears as the eponymous heroine. With colourful costumes, plenty of audience interaction and tons of local gags also in the mix, panto king Kelly, you feel, would have been proud.

Yep, it’s that man Johnny McKnight again, theatre multi-tasker extraordinaire and reigning king of the Scottish pantosphere. As you can probably guess from the title, this year’s festive production for the Tron, which McKnight writes and directs, is a feminine twist on that seasonal classic, A Christmas Carol, featuring a heroine so mean-spirited she makes the Grinch look the very soul of munificence. As Christmas Eve rolls around, a slough of despond settles over Dickensian Street, home of Aganeza Scrooge, the world’s scariest skinflint. She’s had her fill of the Christmas spirit espoused by her employee Bobby Scratchit and his son Whiny Tim and is on a mission to cancel Christmas – permanently. Surely even a visit from the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future can’t melt her resolve – or can it?

In recent years writer, director and performer Johnny McKnight has dominated the Scottish panto scene like no other. A co-founder of theatre company Random Accomplice, McKnight has demonstrated a gift for the bawdy humour and anarchic style that characterises the best seasonal shows. Cinderella is McKnight’s first panto for Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum, and it promises a 21st century take on the most famous seasonal tale, complete with original songs by Alan Penman. The story has been relocated to Paris, where Cinders’ idyllic life with her father is interrupted by the arrival of her terrifying new stepmother, Monique, and her two hideous stepsisters. Her only escape comes from lusting after the local handsome prince, and when a glamorous ball is announced that will take place in the full glare of the TV cameras, Cinderella must use all her cunning to attract the man of her dreams.

‘My three top guests for any techno event would be Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills or Dave Clarke,’ says Conor Mclarnon, promoter of long-running Edinburgh club night Jackhammer. ‘When we started our residency at the Liquid Room we booked Dave Clarke and when I heard Jeff Mills was available I snapped up the booking straight away.’ So that’s only Hawtin to go, which Mclarnon says he’s working on . . . Although it falls two days before the traditional Hogmanay blow-out, this Saturday night guest appearance by Mills at Jackhammer will be the highlight of quite probably Edinburgh’s biggest party over the seasonal period. ‘He’s got his own style and he’s obviously one of the inventors of techno, or certainly the harder minimal style,’ says Mclarnon excitedly. ‘We’ve got him for a three hour set so it should be more of a musical journey. It’s taken 11 years of trying to get him to notice Jackhammer, so I’m very happy with this booking.’ This party will celebrate the eleventh anniversary of Mclarnon starting Jackhammer in Dundee, before it moved to Edinburgh and began an odyssey around all the major venues in the city. Now based between the Caves and the Liquid Room, this late-licensed eight-hour show will also feature two other Jackhammer favourites on guest duties, Slam and Ben Sims. Roast venison loin with a juniper berry sauce (serves 10)

50ml milk 2 vanilla pods 3 eggs 80g caster sugar 30g crème fraîche 50g Maizena 100g ground almonds 50g melted butter 6-10 griottines (cherries) 50g flour pinch of salt

80ml elderflower cordial Champagne (or sparkling wine) Perrier Ice

For the venison: 1.5kg venison loin, to be fully trimmed 10 juniper berries 30ml extra virgin olive oil or extra virgin rapeseed oil seasoning 30g butter For the sauce: 4 shallots, finely diced 1 clove garlic crushes 30g butter 10 juniper berries 2 bay leaves 150ml Madeira 500ml reduced beef stock (or venison stock if you have it)

150ml cream ‘Ensure that the venison loin is fully trimmed and silver skin is removed – your butcher can help with this. You may need to cut the loin in half to fit in the oven. Blend the juniper berries with the oil. Rub this oil over the venison and (ideally) marinade for 3 days. Season the venison well and seal in a hot pan with butter, then remove from the heat and allow to cool. Wrap the venison tightly in heatresistant cling film and place on the rack in the oven on its lowest setting to cook for 45 minutes – it must be as low as possible or the venison will over-cook. Alternatively, you can cook traditionally without the cling film at 140°C for 10-15 minutes (depending on the thickness of the loin) and allow to rest on a wire tray. For the sauce, in the pan in which the venison was cooked, add the butter and sweat the shallots. Then add the Madeira, bay leaves and juniper. Simmer half the mixture away, add the stock and reduce again by two thirds. Add the cream and bring to the boil, then strain and set aside. Carve the venison into thin slices, divide onto plates and drizzle with sauce. This would ideally be served with seasonal vegetables and potatoes – venison goes well with root vegetables or brassicas. Enjoy!’ ALAN’S TIPS:

‘Enjoy a glass of festive champagne and some sharing canapé-style starters for a change. Try a cranberry and apple relish with your turkey – a refreshing change from cranberry sauce. Try making a brussels sprout mash with pancetta and chestnuts to encourage everyone to eat more greens. When making Christmas pudding, soak the fruits in whisky for a couple of weeks to allow the flavours to mature.'

‘Split the vanilla pods in two. Bring the milk to the boil then add the vanilla pods and set aside to cool down. Put the eggs in a large bowl. Beat them together using a whisk with the sugar and a pinch of salt until quite thick and a white colour. Add the ground almonds to the mixture and stir again. Add the crème fraîche and finally the Maizena. Give it a good stir and make sure the mixture is homogenous (with no lumps!). Finally, pour the milk over and stir the whole mixture gently. Get some ramekin dishes or a flat egg plate, butter them and add flour. Tap them with your hands to get rid of excess flour. Put in between 6-10 griottines then pour over the mixture. To have a well-balanced result, try and fill the mixture up to two-thirds of the dish. Cook the clafoutis in a pre-heated oven at 190°C for 15-20 minutes. Put a knife inside your clafoutis and the blade should be clean when coming out, if not your clafoutis is not quite ready. Take out of the oven and set aside until ready to eat. Clafoutis can be enjoyed still warm or at room temperature. Sprinkle some sugar on the top before eating.’ FRED’S CHRISTMAS:

‘Christmas for us in the trade is a very special time because it is a rare occasion to spend a few days where 100% of this time is dedicated to my kids. It is also a lazy day where Betty and I and our two young teenagers will just wander about the house all day. Kids having priority at this precious time, they are usually the ones who decide on, make, and serve the desserts for Christmas. Last year, Matilde’s choice was a clafoutis with griottines and a slowly-baked rich chocolate tart for Camile. Camile can’t do anything without chocolate. December has not been the right seasonal time for cherries, so we have opted for griottines instead which are cherries macerated in old Kirsch syrup. Of course, if griottines are not available then dried prunes can also be used, or in fact any other seasonal fruit. I think to make it a success, this dessert and Christmas dinner have to be as simple as possible so as to be made as quickly as possible . . .’

‘Pour the cordial with a couple of ice cubes into a glass. Add Champagne (or sparkling wine) and top up with ice cold Perrier. Et voila!’

Athol Brose A little more preparation is involved here, so best to make up a batch . . . 200g oats 150ml water 115g heather honey 900ml (yes, 900ml) whisky ‘Soak the rolled oats in the water for an hour. Then stir to make up a paste. Press through a sieve into a large mixing bowl then combine with the honey. Pour in the whisky a little at a time whilst stirring. Then serve (or keep in a bottle and shake well before serving later). So, as The Skylark’s two owners (Kirstie and me, Nina) come from Scotland and France respectively, we thought we’d give you two cocktails! They are both easy to make and use ingredients most folk are likely to have in their larder at Christmas time. The first is one my family and I enjoy over the festive period in Bordeaux and the second, something a little more traditionally Scottish . . . ’ KIRSTY’S CHRISTMAS:

‘So far, as Christmas day habits go, I enjoy being able to draw on the traditions of Scotland and France, picking and choosing to suit. This year, with a new baby and a new business, I think I’ll lean towards the Scottish tradition of warm hospitality and take advantage of the invitation to spend the day with my partner’s family where we (and particularly baby Ada) will be spoilt. If I can get away with it, I’ll be able to limit my time in the kitchen to quickly rustling up some Christmas drop scones, by simply adding some mincemeat to a classic pancake batter. Everyone enjoys them with a hearty accompaniment of brandy cream! A super simple dessert, or indeed, an indulgent breakfast.’ 2012 WISHLIST 21

If, however, you’re finding the glühwein a go-go all a bit too much, you might want to rest your weary shopping pins in the comfort of Valvona & Crolla Vin Caffe (11 Multrees Walk, 557 0088), which boasts a selection of over 50 wines sold by the glass. To bring on a proper festive tingle, head to the Dome (14 George Street, 624 8624) for a glass of fizz while basking in the glow of the over-sized Christmas tree. Head out west and cut out the bull by starting the evening with cocktails in Bo Bar (383 Byres Road, 341 6516) then in to pay a visit to its neighbour, Bo’vine Meats & Wines

(385 Byres Road, 341 6540) who are hosting a ‘No Tinsel, turkey or terrible ties festive menu’ for £29.95 per person. Through in Edinburgh, it’s time for a jolly jig and some traditional Scottish hospitality at the Ghillie Dhu (2 Rutland Place, 222 9930). Turkey with all the trimmings is on offer here, well suited to their range of ales and spirits. POSH MEALS Known for his fine food and many accolades, Martin Wishart does not disappoint with his city centre bistro, The Honours (58a North Castle Street, 220 2513), providing perfect courses and drinks in a laid-back setting, with topnotch service to match. Be sure to book in advance for your spot of lunch or dinner. Through in Glasgow, with its twinkling fairy lights, Ashton Lane is particularly worth visiting at this time of year, home to the dependable and delicious Ubiquitous Chip (12 Ashton Lane, 334 5007) who are serving-up some mouth-watering gems on both their Christmas lunch and dinner menus. WE ARE FAMILY Take a bracing walk along the seafront and reward yourselves with a warm cuppa, bite to eat and toys for the kids, at the family-friendly Skylark (241–243 High Street, Portobello, 629 3037). For another fresh-air idea, great walks and a classic family day out, head to the Royal Botanic Garden. Here you’ll find the vast dining space of the Gateway Restaurant (Arboretum Place, 552 1974) serving Christmas menus, a Hogmanay dinner and great kids’ meals, too. If veggie is your thing Henderson’s (94 Hanover Street, 225 2131), fast approaching its 50th year, is a dab hand at providing wholesome food for all the family. Comedy DVD Round-Up

RIB TICKLERS We judge the Christmas comedy contenders, from Sarah Millican to Brendon Burns

ith a ridiculously vast amount of live comedy DVDs out for Christmas (30 at the last count), it’s a disappointing sign of the times that Pam Ann and Sarah Millican are the only females releasing new work. And it’s a proper shame that Thoroughly Modern Millican Live (●●●●●) is such a timid affair considering it’s from a comic who once had a seriously sharp bite. Much of it revolves around her favourite F-words (food, feet, fannies, farts) but her amiable chatty banter lacks edge and her inability to hear every single audience shout-out (of which there are oh-so many) first time means the show’s rhythm is truncated and the DVD has about ten minutes that could have been shaved off. Cutting Brendon Burns’ Y’Know: Love ‘n’ God ‘n’ Metaphysics ‘n’ Shit (●●●●●) would probably have made little difference to the quality in a show which aims to platform the Aussie’s intellectual side but offers up a mish-mash of confused, ranted opinions whose pay-off (unlike the daring So I Suppose This is Offensive Now!) is a nausea-inducing damp squib. The unreconstructed part of Burnsy’s personality crops up in Phil Nichol’s Nearly Gay/The Naked Racist (●●●●●) double header, with neither of them emerging from proceedings with a massive deal of credit. Sure, Nichol’s energy is impressive but his unremittingly

‘wild’ style becomes too oppressive to enjoy. Pure enjoyment is to the fore, though, in Jon Richardson’s Funny Magnet (●●●●●) as he deliberates on Masterchef, London, Cinderella and pornography, while being apologetic about having nothing on Syria but loads about flatmates who can’t do the washing-up properly. Last Days of Sodom (●●●●●) has Frankie Boyle at his usual caustic self, but the unrelenting darkness is beginning to look a little tired. Best of this bunch come from a Scottish Justin Bieber hairalike and a Canadian who thinks he keeps having problems with airport security as he looks like a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute act. Daniel Sloss Live (●●●●●) features the Fife comic in typically assured form as he entertains a large Glasgow crowd with warmly inventive anecdotes about celebrity, cuisine and sex with views you might not always agree with but which always come from a warm and honest place. Glenn Wool’s problem might be that he is just a little too honest and No Lands Man (●●●●●) has tales that will make you wince out loud as he conspiratorially draws us in to a tale which links a Belgian music festival, anal probing in Indonesia and the death of Bin Laden that shows that it is indeed possible to pack in comedic detail and still deliver a strong and lucid story. 1. Christmas Eve at our local pub, The Swan We don't really have many band traditions but this is one. We all go to my local pub the Swan on Christmas Eve and get steamin'. The only down side is that it pretty much destroys Christmas day as the hangover is usually pretty hefty and the sight of Christmas dinner makes you want to hurl.

1. Socks One year I made a comment about getting socks as a Christmas present and how shite it would be. Every year since that remark I've received a pair of socks as a Christmas present. Socks can bolt! I want Scalextric or a Buzz Lightyear action figure (it's not a doll, it's an action figure.) 2. Yellow snow It's pish!

2. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. My dad looks a bit like Chevy Chase. This is a good film. I like to watch this film every Christmas. Simple as that. 3. Maltesers I like Maltesers, everybody who knows me knows this. At Christmas I seem to get a lot of Maltesers from people as a gift. One year I hope to get that many Maltesers I can fill my bath with them and jump in it. That's pretty weird, eh? I'm pretty weird.

3. Talking to people you havent seen in a long time that you don't like. It's also pish! 4. Christmas cards They are pointless and a waste of paper. I never send them and I disregard any that people send me. I also made this point to my friends/family and since doing so I've received a Christmas card every year from all of them.

Christmas jumpers I've got a few horrendous Christmas jumpers that I like wearing at this time of year. They have to have either snowflakes or reindeers on the front of them. They have to look shite and people have to make fun of you when wearing it.
