editor’s letter Fight for Your Right…

…to partaaaay! Yup, that’s right, party season is underway. To help you plan the perfect event, we’ve covered everything from party supplies to pampering promotions to the best boat bashes.

First things first: the food. On p.18, you’ll find a long list of the top caterers in Hong Kong. The variety alone will make you salivate, with chefs who’ll cook up Indian, Thai, Cajun—whatever suits your theme! You’ve got the goods, but now you need to book a perfect venue. From vintage vibes to beautiful views, you’ll find addresses for all occasions on p.24. Hongkongers love a good theme party—not to mention Halloween’s right around the corner—so turn to p.28 for a slew of costume shops that cover both kid-friendly fun and adult-rated soirees. Not going to a “fancy dress” bash? Don’t worry, we’ve also put together some of our favorite boutiques on p.32 so that you can find a LBD to match the occasion. And, of course, sometimes your iPhone playlist just doesn’t cut it. For some great band recommendations, DJs and more novel forms of entertainment, flip straight to p.38. Party on,

Oct 4-20 Starlight Express

Oct 13 Handmade Hong Kong Fancy some locally made goods? Check out the Handmade Hong Kong market, where dozens of local crafters will be selling their wares for seven hours in the Discovery Bay Main Plaza. From unique jewelry and accessories to dog treats and puppets, the marketplace offers tons of handcrafted items and promises to be a fun experience for the whole family to enjoy. Discovery Bay North Plaza, Plaza Lane, Discovery Bay, Lantau. Free. Visit www.handmadehongkong.com for more info.

If Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber is anything like his worldfamous musicals, then the man may never die. Case in point: “Starlight Express,” Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award-winning 1984 production about a group of toy trains that come to life inside a child’s mind and vie to become the fastest engine in the world. If a rollerskating cast playing trains sounds less than convincing as a premise, consider that it became one of the longest-running musicals in West End history, has continued to play around the world for the last quarter century and is now hitting Hong Kong for the first time. 7:30pm. Lyric Theatre, APA, 1 Gloucester Rd., Wan Chai. $395-950 from www.hkticketing.com.

Oct 6 Harbour Race Cheer on swimmers as they take on Victoria Harbour during this historic race. An annual event that first began in 1906, the Harbour Race is regarded as one of the highlights of the city’s sporting calendar, and has attracted thousands of spectators over the years. The event was suspended in 1979—fortunately, though, it started up again in 2011, and continues to see huge crowds coming out in force to support participants. 8:30am. Race begins in Sam Ka Tsuen Public Pier, Tung Yuen Street, Lei Yue Mun and ends at Quarry Bay Park Public Pier, Quarry Bay. Free to watch.

Through Oct Oktoberfest One of the city’s biggest festivals is finally upon us! Various Oktoberfest events will take place throughout the month. Head to the family-friendly Happy Valley Oktoberfest on October 9 and 23, where you can expect to enjoy plenty of cold brews served in a massive beer garden right by the race tracks. Live music, prizes and Bavarianthemed snacks are also on offer, but let’s not kid ourselves—we’re there for the beer. The Marco Polo German Bierfest kicks off on October 25; known as one of the best places to carry out beer-related festivities, there are plenty of yummy German treats (think pork sausages, sauerkraut and the like), with a merry live band straight from Munich and of course, plenty of beer flowing.

Stella Artois World Draught Masters Sep 13

Happy Valley: 7pm. Racecourse, Hong Kong Jockey Club, Sports Road, Causeway Bay. $10 at the door. German Bierfest: 8pm. Marco Polo Hongkong Hotel, Harbour City, 3 Canton Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui. $130-240 from www.hkticketing.com.

Oct 19 Mr. Gay Hong Kong Eye candy alert! With Pink Season under way, Mr. Gay Hong Kong makes a return this fall, marking the event’s fifth year. This year’s fantabulous judging panel includes Helena Chan of “Asia’s Next Top Model” fame and HK Magazine editor Adam White. Don’t miss the finale—the winner of MGHK will go on to represent Hong Kong at Mr. Gay World 2014 in Rome. 7pm. Armani/Privé, 2/F, Chater House, 8 Connaught Rd. Central, 3583-2828. Price TBA.

Beer brand Stella Artois hosted a competition in Lan Kwai Fong last month, with contestants battling it out for the title of Hong Kong’s Draught Master. Contestants carried out the “nine-step pouring ritual” under the watchful glare of judges, and Aina Matsukawa, of Happy Valley Bar and Grill, took home the crown.

Tiffany’s Charm Bracelet & Orange Lexon Watch These two accessories are my sentimental arm swag staples. The charm bracelet is from Mom—my friends have added to it with charms over the years— and the watch is from my boyfriend. I hop around a lot and these make me feel like I am carrying a bit of my loved ones with me all the time.

Les Essentiels de la Vie tote My mom calls it my “homeless” bag. I sort of live out of it. It’s super messy inside and filled with cost sheets and magazine tears, so it’s kind of like my mini office on-the-go.

These are my favorite day-to-night makeup staples; they don’t smudge and go on very smooth. Somehow, I can only find this chain in Europe, so every September when I go to Europe for work I stock up.

Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet This is great because I can get it at Boots, and it’s beautifully floral but not too sweet. It has a dynamic scent that’s really comforting, so I find myself wearing it a lot.

Cotton On Skinny Jeans I rarely get two things in different colors, but I got these on sale in Australia and they were so comfy (and economical!) that I had to break the rule.

Shwood Sunglasses These sunnies are made of mahogany and rosewood and they’re honestly the best I’ve ever had in terms of comfort. As my factory in China makes mostly solid wood furniture, carrying this range in the shop makes me feel like I have a bit of an extension from my furniture world into my T9M world. The fact that they are super cute doesn’t hurt either.

styling for your party, and our huge range of couture costumes is available to rent or to be used as a part of the fun, exuberant atmosphere. We also have a network of entertainment contacts including talent, musicians, DJs, MCs, as well as audio visual and catering companies. The List: How have the renovations changed the venue? CK: We have entirely revamped it, de-cluttered, brightened and opened up the space, installed a modern kitchen and bar— basically creating a chic and inviting ambience. The List: What are some good party themes? CK: Dressing up is a great escape to another world, and a great way to let your inner diva shine. Obviously, Halloween and Christmas have themes built in already, but they can be tweaked to be more original. And enough with Gatsby already! Why not try something more adventurous, like biker bondage, white party, showgirl-a-go-go, fashion week bitches, drag dolly bingo, full-moon beach party or wigged-out mad hatter? The List: What are your tips on making an event memorable?

Artistic director Charlot Kryza of the recently revamped House of Siren shares some party planning tips with The List. www.siren.com.hk

The List: What’s the concept behind House of Siren? Charlot Kryza: We’re a private, decadent, theatrical, 1,800-square-foot fantasy land! A one-stop shop for anyone wanting to host an event; flamboyant or otherwise. House of Siren is also well known for providing costuming services. The List: What types of event services do you provide? CK: House of Siren is a large, adaptable space that you can hire for any type of event. We provide creative consultation and

CK: A clever theme involving costumes always make for a memorable time. Adding to that, you’ll want the perfect guest list, a great caterer and menu, fabulous décor, and cool invitations. The music playlist or DJ is also crucial, and should reflect your theme or occasion, as well as cater to different tastes. At the end of the night, send your guests home with something extra special in keeping with the theme as a memento. The List: What are some small touches that make a big difference? CK: You can create a signature specialty cocktail that could have an eye-catching garnish; or add some live entertainment, such as tarot card readers to up the atmosphere a notch. As far as decorating goes, even inexpensive, simple ideas liven up a space—and fresh flower arrangements are always wonderful!

Director of Sweet Soirees, party planning extraordinaire Lauren Roberts dishes on how to best pull together a killer shindig. sweetsoireeshk.com

The List: How far ahead should you start planning? Lauren Roberts: At least a month ahead, mostly because if you want to book a particular venue, entertainer or caterer, it’s best to secure them in advance to avoid disappointment. The List: How can people make an event memorable? LR: Let guests experience something unique; whether that be an up-and-coming DJ, an exclusive venue or a totally original menu. The List: What are some interesting party themes? LR: We recently did a Country Fun Fair Party, which was great fun. Adults and kids both enjoyed playing fun fair games, getting their caricatures portraits done, eating burgers and posing in our custom-made photo booth. The List: How can you pull together a last-minute event? LR: What you really need is an all-encompassing venue that can provide great food, drinks and music. Then all you need to worry about is inviting the guests. The List: What are your favorite places to shop for decorations? LR: We make most of our decorations and goodie bags ourselves, but our favorite shop for balloons has to be Simply Love.

party to-do list

Seven Cardinal Sins of Partygoers

Gill Sharp, House of Siren’s events director and costume manager, shares some guidelines for party planners.

Think you're the perfect guest? Think again. Here are some party no-no’s from House of Siren's Charlot Kryza.

Send a reminder the day before that’s accompanied by a map with directions.

Perform a sound check with DJ or iPhone and be sure to rehearse live entertainment.

Dress the staff in the theme and, if possible, have costumed talent meet and greet guests.

1. Arriving early or late: Showing up 30 minutes early, when the host is rushing around, is just as bad as 30 minutes late. 2. Touching the TV, air conditioner, laptops, music—anything that has a plug in it. 3. Posting pictures to Facebook without asking the host; it might be a private affair! 4. Bringing extra guests: at the very least, be sure to phone and ask.

Have extra ice on hand— it runs out faster than you'd think!

5. Showing up intoxicated, or getting so wasted it's embarrassing.

Have a list and check it thrice!

6. Outshining the host—unless being over-the top is your m.o.

Whenever possible, do leave it to the professionals. That way, you’re more relaxed and can truly enjoy your event!

7. Forgetting to thank your host! A thank you note with one detail from the evening will make all their effort worth it.

Event planning maven Karen Wang from Tiara walks The List through some party pointers. www.tiara.hk

KW: I'd suggest sticking with simple color themes so that people can easily participate. Era themes are a good example, since it’s really easy to get matching attire and decorations. People might feel left out if the theme is too difficult. Of course, what counts as a good theme also depends on the age group of the party crowd.

The List: How far ahead should you start planning?

The List: What’s the best way to deal with misbehaving guests?

Karen Wang: If it’s just a cocktail gathering for friends, you need less time to plan. But for birthdays or anniversaries, you’ll want to give yourself more time, perhaps three months, but even six months ahead isn’t too soon. The general rule is, start planning as soon as you know the date. The List: What are your tips on making an event memorable? KW: Focus on the purpose of your celebration. Sometimes people bring in too many ideas, which may make you forget about the essentials. You also have to consider the overall effect of everything in the party, food, music, decoration, and so on.

14

The List: What are some good party themes?

KW: Misbehaving guests are mostly those who’ve had too much to drink. You don’t want that one misbehaving person to become the focus of the party and ruin it for other guests. Invite them to take some rest somewhere quiet, for example in a separate room where they can calm down. The List: Favorite places to shop for supplies, favors and decorations? KW: I source from many places, but Simply Love is especially good if you’re looking for balloons. It’s more kids-oriented, so if you want something posh, you’ll have to look elsewhere. Another store I like is Complete Deelite, which makes great customized cakes.

These talented professionals are organized both by skills and themes with sub-categories of locally based and internationally based entertainers. DJs, character actors, puppeteers, sword swallowers (seriously, how do they do that?), stilt

walkers and unicyclists are just clicks away from putting on a show at your next event. Not hosting a party? Just hire a bunch of those living statue guys to freak out your friends. Works every time.

according to your specifications. Videos of past performances are available on their website. It’s also a great service to book for weddings, as they can match pretty much any budget and musical preference.

Hideaway

Sunny Bay

WHY WE LIKE IT Originally known as Yam O, meaning “north of the hill and south of water,” this tiny bay is located on the northeast shore of Lantau Island. It was renamed Sunny Bay when the area became an interchange for the Disneyland Resort Line, with a brand-spankingnew MTR station built on reclaimed land. Check out nearby Luk Keng Tsuen Village, which sits on the rocky pensinsula, surrounded by lush, green hills. This sleepy rural backwater is now home to a dozen local residents, and offers a taste of rural Hong Kong. Enjoy a pleasant stroll past old village houses to the jetty to watch fishermen drying their catch. You can also walk out to Cheung Sok, a small uninhabited island linked to the peninsula by a narrow sandbar. Yam O was the only natural lumber preservation zone in Hong Kong and you can still 50

spot natural lumber on stilts and the remnants of the old log ponds. Local archaeologists unearthed remains dating back to the Tang and Song dynasties in Yam O, including fragments of lime kilns. As the sun sets, the rock wall opposite the station is a popular spot for local anglers, and it’s a tranquil place to watch the sun sink into the bay. Spend an afternoon here on the way back from Disneyland for a glimpse of the Hong Kong of yesteryear.

GETTING THERE Simply hop on the MTR to Sunny Bay Station and take exit A. Luk Keng Tsuen Village is an easy 30-minute walk. There is also a small public pier at Luk Keng, with a regular kaito service to Tsing Lung Tau in Tsuen Wan.
