Make a Date Our Picks for the month

Nov 6 -10 A Clockwork Orange

Nov 1-10 Polkadot Boutique Pop-Up The uber-trendy Polkadot Boutique is hosting a 10-day pop-up this month, celebrating the launch of made-to-order shoe brand, Upper Street London. Shoppers can take home a pair of their own customized kicks—which come in sizes 33-44—with 12 styles, four widths and more than 100 swatches to choose from. Prices start at $1,800. Mon-Sat 11am-8pm & Sun noon-6pm. 2/F, 29 Hollywood Rd., Central, 2521-0636, www.shoppolkadot.com.

It’s been 50 years since Anthony Burgess first introduced the world to Alex, his droogs and a bit of ultra-violence. While the imagery from Stanley Kubrick’s 1971 cinematic adaptation still holds up as a striking visual representation of the horror depicted in the book, the acclaimed all-male company Action To The Word has been traveling the globe for two years trying to leave their testosterone-pumped stage adaptation deep in the memories of audiences. It seems to be working. The play looks stunning, intense, funny and full of energy. Book early and see what all the fuss is about. 8pm; additional performances on Nov 9-10, 3pm. Lyric Theatre, Academy for Performing Arts, 1 Gloucester Rd., Wan Chai. $295-695 from www.hkticketing.com.

Nov 17 Family Affairs Take your pick of two family-friendly events today: the Stanley Family Carnival, which will have old-school games and plenty of seaside fun for the little ones, and Peak to Fong, the Hong Kong Dog Rescue’s annual charity walk. The walk challenges pooches and their owners to tackle a trail between The Peak and Lan Kwai Fong. This year is the event’s 10th anniversary, and all funds raised will go towards the charity— meaning better care for our less-fortunate furry friends. Carnival: 11am-6pm. Hong Kong Sea School, 13-15 Tung Tau Wan Rd., Stanley, 2813-1561, www.cncf.org.hk. $100 for adults; $250 for children. Peak to Fong: 11am-4pm. $200 from www.hongkongdogrescue.com.

Nov 1-10 The Hong Kong International Literary Festival It’s bliss for book lovers in November, as writers from Iceland to India (and everywhere in between) hit Hong Kong for the annual lit fest that spans a course of 10 days. More than 50 seminars, talks and panel discussions will be hosted by an impressive roster of international authors, including Jung Chang and Glen Duncan—just to name a few.

Through November Boozy Month November officially marks the start of the holiday season with tons of wine-infused events. The American Express Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival lasts through to the end of the month, with fine wines and delicacies from more than 280 booths. Meanwhile, the International Wine & Spirits Fair on November 10 is Asia’s top wine event, showcasing all that’s strong in the world of wine. Festival: Noon. New Central Harbourfront, Central. $30 at the door; tasting passes available from some vendors. Fair: 10:30am-5pm. $200, Hall 3C-G, HKCEC, 1 Expo Drive, Wan Chai. $200 at Hall 1E.

Gay Day 2013: As part of Pink Season, the third annual Gay Day is kicking off on November 3 with lots of family fun! 10am. Hong Kong Disneyland. $372 at the door.

Mr. Gay Hong Kong took over Armani Prive’s gorgeous terrace last month, as contestants showed off their beach bods and answered tough questions from judges, which included Helena Chan of “Asia’s Next Top Model” fame. Droves of supporters enjoyed the sexy drag queen performances and the complimentary mini bottles of Prosecco Zonin. At the end of the night, Michael Morrill took home the crown, presented by The List’s own managing editor, Sarah Fung.

We have some awesome news: Zara Home is opening in Harbour City on October 31. That’s right, the home accessories arm of Spanish fashion mecca Zara is bringing its chic goods to Hong Kong. Rush over to outfit your flat—Zara Home stocks everything from linens to lampshades, table settings to pretty storage solutions. If you’re shopping for beds or other large furnishings, though, you’ll have to stick to Ikea—for now!

Like a good wine, we hope the burgundy trend never ends. The holiday color looks lovely with most skin tones and pairs perfectly with those after-work drinks.

Knuckle Rings We didn’t think these rings made a lick of sense at first. But once we realized they stay pretty securely below your knuckle, we came around. Ring, $495 from Nuage Concept

Sports Jerseys Live for Fashion? Though luxury labels may take up most of the prime real estate in Hong Kong, the city is brimming with under-theradar designers who are keen to show off their work. That’s where the “I Live Fashion” project comes in. Spearheaded by local jewelry designer Carmen Chan, the project aims to celebrate independent designers, bloggers and photographers. You can help support the local scene—as well as get a head start on your holiday shopping—by attending the #ILiveFashion Style Jam Party on November 22 at Roo Boutique (1/F, 16 Elgin St., Central). my favorite things

Vintage Ray Bans My friend found this pair in a Chinese knick-knack shop and bought them for me, because she said, “They’re so ugly, I could see Sam wearing them!”

Red Moleskin I always carry a Moleskin with me to jot down ideas or draw sketches for clients. I’d rather lose my wallet than my sketchbooks, which are irreplaceable wells of ideas.

Sapa Bag

Sam Wong Originally from Canada, Sam Wong is all over the Hong Kong design scene: she co-founded eco-friendly online boutique A Boy Named Sue, writes fashion blog Sam is Home and also works as a food and set stylist. She tells Kate Springer about her day-to-day inspirations. www.samishome.com, www.aboynamedsue.co

I picked up this souvenir in Bangkok recently and it quickly became my day-to-day bag—it’s the perfect size to carry all my essentials. Plus, it adds a little laughter to my otherwise somber color palette of navy, black and white.

Leather Jacket by sway Everyone needs a go-to jacket to wear over the shoulders or with a silk maxi dress. I’m waiting for winter to start so I can layer. This one is made from reclaimed leather from the motorcycle industry, and we sell it on A Boy Named Sue.

Carrot Cake From Fuel This is an unpretentious but oh-so-perfect afternoon snack. The elements that make it perfect? Moistness and cream cheese frosting! It’s best served with a chai latte if I’m feeling for a sugar high.

Tailored Silk Skirt I go to Shenzhen during the weekends to visit a specific tailor. I bring her my designs, which I draw in my sketchbook, and she makes them. You can find fabrics and tailors at Lo Wu Mall right off the KCR.

Baseball Cap I love hats—they finish off outfits nicely. Baseball caps for summer, beanies for winter. They say a girl can never have too many shoes, but hats can really define the entire look.

From Flat to Fabulous Kate Springer and Andrea Lo talk to the Hong Kong interior designers behind these inspiring home makeovers.

Before

After

Alexander Suen, Arctitudesign Limited Founder Alexander Suen walks The List through a recent project, which showcases awesome views and extra storage spaces. The List: Can you describe your professional background? Alexander Suen: I studied in Australia and worked there for about seven years. I came back to Hong Kong two years ago, because I think there’s a lot of room for improvement in the interior design scene. The List: What’s Artitudesign’s philosophy? AS: We try to make eco-friendly decisions when choosing our materials. For example, we use recycled plastics as well as conscientious timber. We also use low-VOC paint, which has fewer chemicals. The List: Can you explain the project? AS: My client bought this apartment, which was more than 20 years old. It was in bad condition, but they wanted to save money so we took a budget-conscious approach. The List: What changes did you make? AS: The couple wanted the space to feel bigger, so we broke down two walls—opening up the dining area, kitchen

and living area. Their other requirement was storage: they moved from a 1,000-square-foot flat down to 600 square feet, so we built lots of cabinets throughout the apartment. We also converted two small bedrooms into a master bedroom with a study nook. The List: How did you incorporate energy efficiency? AS: We used LED lamps throughout and also installed different lighting zones, which means you don’t have to switch on all the lights if you just want to read in bed. The List: What’s an easy way to save space? AS: By getting rid of hinged doors, you save all of the space that the open door takes up. For this apartment, we put in all sliding doors and it made a huge difference. The List: What’s the most unique thing about this project? AS: We had a chance to incorporate an exceptional mountain view. We kept the paint white so that it contrasts with the green from the trees—it makes the color look outstanding. Louis Lau, Ample Design Designer Louis Lau of Ample Design tells The List how this bachelor pad enhances space and natural light. The List: Can you tell us a little about the project? Louis Lau: The gentleman wanted an open space, but the problem is that the layout is quite long. We ended up knocking down the walls so you could see directly to the windows, where there’s a great 180-degree view of the sea. The List: How is the apartment energy efficient? LL: There’s no need for lights during the day because there is plenty of sunlight. The floor is all reusable materials: we try to recycle old concrete whenever possible. The master bed and the TV cabinets were already there, so we just refurbished them. The timber frames along the ceiling of the bedroom are multi-functional: they look nice but also hide a big structural beam that’s underneath.

Renovation Dos and Don’ts After successfully renovating her flat, managing editor Sarah Fung shares some handy advice. DEFINITELY DO • Invest in taps. You’ll save money in the long run— cheap ones will break, leak or come loose. Same goes for kitchen sinks: a cheap one will dent if you drop a knife in it! • Do your research. Ask your management company about what’s permitted, especially when it comes to knocking down walls and mounting exterior air conditioners. • Brace yourself. Weather and delivery holdups are a given. While you’re bracing, you can safely bet that your costs will creep higher. • Take a seat. Sit on the toilets in the showroom before choosing a model. You may feel ridiculous, but

After

The List: Can you explain the color palette? LL: We didn’t want to use too much color, because we wanted it to still look modern five to 10 years from now. Also, with earth tones and neutrals, the client can play up the colors however he wants. The List: What were the client’s requirements? LL: From the start, our client voiced two big requirements: a hanging spot for his bike, because he rides several times a week, and lots of natural lighting. The client mentioned many times that the wanted to really highlight the view, so we made sure that you could see it as soon as you walk through the door. Ample Design: 3529-1864, www.amplehk.com

sometimes the most stylish porcelain thrones are incredibly uncomfortable. DEFINITELY DON’T • Go for the first contractor you meet. Get at least three quotes, and ideally find someone through a personal referral. • Build your cupboards to the ceiling. They’ll look too bulky and will loom over the room. Leave space on top for storage. • Install gas burners in an open kitchen. It was recently made illegal and may invalidate your fire insurance. Induction cookers are a great alternative and also give you an extra work surface. • Choose matte kitchen cupboards. Semi-gloss or high-gloss finishes are less likely to show finger marks. • Tear out all of the existing features. A tired wooden floor can come back to life if you sand and re-tint it, and old-style iron window bars can be a unique and attractive feature.

Jo Gray, Grovens Living Grovens Living redesigned this flat on trendy Star Street in Wan Chai. Owner Jo Gray tells The List about the firm’s approach to space efficiency and color palettes. The List: Tell us a little about your professional background? Jo Gray: After seven years of working in the garment industry in Hong Kong, I started to design and renovate interiors for our property portfolio—that’s how Grovens Living was born. The List: How is Grovens Living different from other design firms? JG: We provide a very hands-on service. A lot of my clients will hand over a key, and I won’t see them for three months. This is perfect for some of our clients who are very busy and want a partner who will manage everything. The List: Can you explain this particular project? JG: This project was an investor client of ours who bought the flat as a rental to add to his portfolio. The client wanted to attract high-end tenants, ideally a professional single person or a couple. The List: What changes did you make? JG: We converted the two cramped bedrooms into one larger master bed with ample closet and work spaces.

For the living area, we opened up the kitchen and added a breakfast nook. The lounge was divided up with a bookshelf, which also functions as a TV cabinet and a divider. And the bathroom was upgraded for a more spa-like feel. The List: How does this design save space? JG: We utilized the windowsills that are otherwise useless: reclaiming the space allowed us to create a small work area and a breakfast nook. The bed is a hydraulic lift-up bed with huge storage underneath, and the wardrobes have been designed to maximize closet space. By the front door, we also installed an entrance table, which doubles as a shoe cabinet. The List: What are your favorite aspects of this project? JG: The view over the back of Bowen Road from the bedroom is spectacular. The color scheme is also pretty special: the neutrals will stay in style for years. I also love the breakfast nook—it’s a perfect place to host brunch. Grovens Living: 9174-8502, www.grovens-living.com

Hacks

Solve your own flat woes with a few of these handy tricks. The Problem: Jumping Fuses The Fix: When moving into a new home, find out where your fuse box is and make sure it’s easy to access. When fuse outages occur, all you usually need to do is to snap the switch. If outages recur, however, it might indicate an electric bug or outdated wires. If that’s the case, then you’ll want to hire a handyman to check things out.

20

The Problem: Squeaky Door Hinges The Fix: If you don’t have WD40 around, Vaseline can help in the short term. However, a squeaky door probably means you have a bent or rusty pin (the nail-like thing that holds the hinge plates together). Use long pliers to remove the pin or get a little more hands-on: scraping off dirt and rust, or hammering the pin straight should do the trick. The Problem: Shedding Pets The Fix: While there really isn’t anything you can do about your furry friends, laundry sheets are an easy way to clean up the hairs that stick to your clothes and household fabrics. Static from any used sheet will pick up fur with just a swipe!

The Problem: Water Stains in the Shower The Fix: A little Chemistry 101: hard water has calcium in it, and that’s what’s building up on your shower doors. Vinegar will remove “water stains” nicely. Just mix equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle and leave for an hour or so, then wipe. The Problem: Peeling Paint The Fix: Though your first instinct may be

Know & Tel just to splash on another layer onto peeling paint, it won’t be long before the problem resurfaces with a vengeance. First, remove any loose paint, and then use finegrit sandpaper to smooth out the edges. Use a wet sponge to remove any remaining dust or debris and leave it to dry. Now you can dress it up with a fresh lick of paint. The Problem: Cockroaches The Fix: Eek! Whether you like it or not, cockroaches are a part of life in Hong Kong. Don’t leave food hanging around (that includes pet food) and keep a lid on rubbish bins, especially kitchen ones. Install sealed drain covers that can be detached when needed. If you do find a cockroach craw ling around, install traps and poisons, and

remember to change these regularly because cockroaches are highly adaptive. But! Be cautious when using insecticides around pets, children, food and electrical appliances. The Problem: Musty Clothes The Fix: That musty closet smell comes from high humidity and is particularly prevalent during the spring and summer months. Invest in boxed, odorless humidifiers to put into closed closets and drawers to keep the funky stench at bay.

Pour a boatload of vinegar into a spray bottle— no dilution necessary—and spray the moldy surface. Let it sit for a few hours and wipe with a clean cloth. There will be a smell, but keeping windows open should clear it up within a few hours.

The Problem: Moldy Walls The Fix: Spring showers bring May flowers… but it’s also notorious for causing black, moldy walls. Not only do

Full House List reader Tricia Buser, who’s a mom of three and the founder of My Musical Studio, shares some tips and tricks to keep the little ones safe.

The List: How old are your kids? Tricia Buser: I have three children, who are between 9 months and 4 years old. Before having my first child, I tried to read as many books as I could as well as talk to more experienced mothers. Through the years, we found some baby-proofing techniques that worked for us. The List: Any advice for young moms? TB: Once your children can understand, it’s important to explain why certain things are prohibited—when you take the time to explain the danger involved, it can make kids take the rules more seriously. The List: What did you do to make your flat safer for your kids? TB: I took lots of measures in my own

24

home, but every family will have its own set of concerns based on their flat and home decor. Tricia’s Suggestions? Soft Mats: We lined our children’s rooms with soft mats so that they could crawl around freely when they were younger. It also meant that I was less worried when they were learning to walk and falling over all the time.

Know & Tel Playpen: We’ve had a playpen set up for most of my married life! There was always a child that had a use for it. The playpen allows my children to be in a safe area without me worrying they will crawl off somewhere and get hurt. The toys in the playpen are mostly soft and there’s nothing small that the little one can put in his mouth.

Window Catches: My two older children do a lot of role playing when they are together. From Tarzan to

princesses—you never know what they’ll get into. Living in a high rise, we are always worried about the windows. I have installed these safety catches to keep our windows from opening more than a small gap. Cordless Curtains: We do not use blinds in the house or curtains with cords. Children find these very attractive to play with, and they can easily get tangled in them. Corner Protectors: Our kids love jumping

from couch to couch, so these keep them from hitting corners. Electric Socket Protectors: My youngest child is still very curious and wants to put his fingers into everything. The older ones can already take these out, but it is a good reminder for them to think before doing so. My Musical Studio: 15/F, Queen’s Road East Plaza, 202 Queen’s Rd. Ready to Remodel? Shelly Hayashi of the General Store, a hip home décor store and interior design firm, shares tips and trends for those thinking about renovating. The List: What’s the first thing to consider when renovating? Shelly Hayashi: Priorities! Know your top five must-haves. Is it space, great furniture or built-in storage? Knowing your own priorities will help you and your designer understand what is essential. The List: What are some common problems that tend to occur? SH: Time delays are always an issue but proper planning and quick decisions can help fight this problem. Also, there is always the risk of going over budget. A good tip: present your designer with an underestimate, then you’ll probably land closer to your actual budget. The List: What are the upcoming design trends? SH: Although we feel classics always last longer than trends, 2014 is showing lots of clean lines

Know & Tel and natural finishes. We are still seeing playful uses of ombre, which could be used in paint or textiles. The List: How can you increase storage without creating eyesores? SH: Try curating your collections! A bookshelf could just be a pile of books or it can be a journey through your interests and belongings. Start by organizing your books by color, and you will see it all come together. The List: What are the biggest obstacles in redesigning HK apartments? SH: It’s difficult if you are just renting, but a small thing that makes a big impact is changing the hardware—think doorknobs and bathroom faucets. Updating these simple items can bring your flat forward quickly and often inexpensively.

Say What?

Shelly Hayashi translates designer lingo into laymen’s terms. Designer Says: “Is this artwork meaningful to you?” Designer Means: “Maybe it’s time to toss this?” DS: “The timing is a bit tight.” DM: “It’s almost definitely going to be late.” DS: “That’d look great in the guest bedroom.” DM: “Get it out of sight!” DS: “Let’s invest in some great pieces.” DM: “Stop buying Ikea!” General Store: 41 Gage St., Shop H, Central, 2851-8144, www.generalstoreltd.com

Dear Mr. Know-It-All, Every time I reach out my chopsticks for that final spring roll, my friends all tut at me and say the food is too “hot.” Of course it’s hot! That’s why I’m trying to pick it up before it goes cold. What am I missing? — Hot Stuff You’re missing your friends trying to help you, Hot Stuff. They’re not trying to keep your from burning your tongue; they’re trying to keep you alive for longer. When they say your spring rolls are hot, they mean that they’re full of yit hei—literally, “hot air.” Ultimately, this comes down to the concept of yin and yang: of balance in all things, from philosophy to aesthetics to medicine—to food. The idea is that most food you eat is either “heating” (the aforementioned

yit hei) or “cool” (“leung”). The objective is to maintain a balance between the two kinds of good. “Heating” foods stimulate the body and increase the metabolism. Hot foods include some meats, spices, chili, and fried foods. “Cool” foods, on the other hand, tend to slow the body down. Think melons, cucumber, and tomato. According to this philosophy, too much “heat” can lead to dry skin, rashes, eczema, nose bleeds and other unpleasantness. But too much “cool,” and you’re liable to dizziness, weakness and aches. So it sounds easy, right? Eat equal amounts of hot and cool, and you’ll be fine. But two problems: first, it’s not always obvious what’s hot and what’s cool. Fried foods may be heating; but so too are lychees. Watermelon is cooling; but so are eggs. Second, we’re not all the same. Some of us are naturally hot; some are cool. Eat too much of your own “type,” and you’re going to feel very bad. So: the best idea is to eat all things, and eat them in moderation, according to your “type.” And a tip, Hot Stuff: yes, that spring roll you’re jonesing for may be full of yit hei. And no, you may not care for the leung cha cooling tea sold on the streets of Hong Kong. But beer is plenty leung too. So by all means: grab the spring roll. Toss back a cold Tsingtao alongside it and watch the universe slide back into balance.

Sai Wan Ho Harbour Park Photos by Jeff Hahn

WHY WE LIKE IT Parallel to Tai Hong Street, Sai Wan Ho Harbour Park looks out to the eastern side of Victoria Harbour. Early risers enjoy morning walks along the promenade, and fishermen spend their afternoons angling off the pier, which is within walking distance of Sai Wan Ho MTR station. In the evenings, you can enjoy the view of Kowloon East, Sam Ka Tsuen Typhoon Shelter and Lei Yue Mun. A few minutes away from the Hong Kong Film Archive, movie buffs often drop by “SoHo East, right 50

on the edge of Tai Hong Street, and enjoy Asian, Middle Eastern, Portuguese or Italian cuisine. Living up to its reputation as a cool place to relax, the area features two-dozen alfresco bars and restaurants and is an as-yet undiscovered place to unwind and watch the world go by (www.sohoeast.com.hk).

GETTING THERE Take the MTR to Sai Wan Ho and leave through Exit A. From there, the walk to the park is about 15 minutes.
