It’s all eating, drinking and wrestling at Sumo Sushi Sake HK, an all-day Japanese festival. The event is pretty self-explanatory: expect lots of sushi-swigging and sake-pounding, while watching pairs of sumo heavies battle it out. Japanese restaurants from all over town will be setting up stalls, plus there will be 100 different types of sakes. Bring an appetite!

The Legend of Mulan

While the Disney adaptation is what brought this story worldwide fame, the ancient Chinese legend of Mulan is also a tale not to be missed. When Mulan’s aged father finds himself on a conscription list and without an elder brother to take his place, our heroine joins the army disguised as a man.

Her valor in battle earns her ascendancy in the ranks, and eventually a generalship. The Hong Kong Dance Company’s inspiring retelling of the classic tale comes complete with live accompaniment from a children’s choir.

DIY Hats

London-based milliner maestro Awon Golding will be back in her native Hong Kong to host a number of workshops, namely on hat-making. Known for her elaborate and whimsical designs, Golding’s award-winning creations continue to attract a dedicated fan following, so act quickly to snag a spot at one of her upcoming workshops, which cover fabric, feathered and flowered headpieces.

Several classes will be held throughout November and December, and Golding herself will be there to teach participants the tricks of the trade with step-by-step demonstrations.

LKF Carnival

Lan Kwai Fong will play host to the biggest annual street party in town, with carnival parades, dancers in sexy costumes and other live shows and performances. While the adults enjoy a drink or, ahem, three, there’s something for the kids too: the amphitheater will be transformed into a play area complete with game booths and cartoon characters.

Clockenflap

The city’s biggest music and arts festival is once again upon us. As per last year, Clockenflap will take place on the promenade at the West Kowloon Cultural District. While there is a stellar lineup of international and local bands taking to the stages, including the likes of Franz Ferdinand and Two Door Cinema Club, don’t forget there will also be film tents and art installations, as well as a huge kids’ area and plenty of gourmet foods to sample over the weekend.

Posh OnceStyle boutique looks more like a designer studio—and is full of throwback couture finds. Cheongsams

These sophisticated, body-hugging dresses were all the rage during the 1920s. Nowadays, cheongsams still make for an elegant fashion statement and are typically worn at Chinese celebrations.

Check Out: Mei Wah Tailor After spending decades in the business, Kan Hon-wing of Mei Wah Tailor is still as enthusiastic about making clothes as he was on his first day. Taking a look at his jam-packed little book of records—which reveals customers who flock from France, Australia, China and the US just to own a piece of Kan’s handiwork—it’s not hard to see why he’s been able to stay in

business through the years. His cheongsams are all custommade with attention to every detail—a testament to Kan’s pride in producing top-quality cheongsams. A dress here typically costs around $4,800, and Kan’s happy to mail your garment to you once it’s done.

2Chinese Calligraphy

Before pens and pencils, brushes and black ink were used for writing in many Asian countries, including China, Japan and Korea. Today, Chinese calligraphy is still taught in school as an art form, but high-quality animal-hair brushes and ink stones have become increasingly harder to find.

Yau Sang Cheong was founded during the 1800s, when the Qing dynasty still held the reins. The three-story shop in Yau Ma Tei is most often frequented by loyal customers, as it sells everything one might need for Chinese calligraphy. Head here for inks of all colors, handmade brushes, prints, papers and even instruction manuals that are perfect for beginners.

A true Hong Kong oldie, Two Girls cosmetic brand was established in 1898 and still sells some of its most classic products. The company’s best-selling Florida Water is a lightly fragranced water that doubles as mosquito repellent, while the Living Rose Face Cream is a multi-tasking concoction that soothes and heals the skin. Products are available at multiple vendors across town but for the complete experience, visit the store in Causeway Bay.

Bamboo Steamers

Bamboo steamers may not be as hi-tech as your modern kitchen gadgets, but they’re well worth the investment. If you’re looking to make Chinese dim sum— mmm... har gow—bamboo steamers are the best way to keep your food from getting all soggy.

Check Out: Tak Chong Sum Kee Tak Chong Sum Kee Bamboo Steamer Company got its start in Guangzhou around 1950, but as many people flocked to Hong Kong, so did the family business. The store has moved around the city several times over the years, but finally settled in its Sai Ying Pun location 20 years ago. Tak Chong Sum Kee’s first clients were mainly dim sum restaurants, but nowadays the owners say housewives and casual cooks are the most common customers.

4Soy Sauce

One of the most important condiments in Cantonese cooking, soy sauce is a staple in every Hong Kong kitchen.

Made with fermented, pressed soy paste, the dark liquid has a unique flavor that nicely complements meats and vegetables.

Check Out: Kowloon Soy Established in 1917, Kowloon Soy, which now operates in Yuen Long, follows age-old brewing methods. Basically, that means the sun is doing all the hard work: soy beans are left outside to ferment naturally before being pressed and bottled in the factory. While the company’s main focus is still on soy sauce, the shop in Central also sells Cantonese foods and condiments such as bean curd, sweetened black vinegar and sesame oil.

6Traditional Candy

Chinese snacks typically offer a variety of sweets and pastries made with local ingredients such as nuts, lotus seeds and red dates. “Jellies,” which are made with herbs and dried fruits, are pretty popular too.

Check Out: Chan Yee Jai All those in the know flock to Chan Yee Jai for its delicious treats. The company has been pumping out tasty concoctions since 1927, with almond cookies and egg noodles with shrimp roe among some of its most famous products. Delivery is available for orders of greater than $300 on Hong Kong Island ($500 for Kowloon). Be warned, though: the “online” ordering method is a little old-school—you need to print a form and fax it to 2543-7277. Or… you could just visit in person.

7Shoe Artistry

Embroidery has long been an important art form in China: the Imperial Palace used to have entire departments consisting of young women who would embroider flowers and dragons onto the royal family’s clothes, pillows and bags.

5Chinese Cosmetics

The city’s first beauty brands sprung from locals who saw wealthy colonizers using fancy cosmetics and bath products.

Resourceful artisans adapted the products to make more affordable knock-off versions. Not only was the price adjusted, but products were also tweaked to suit Hongkongers’ tastes, resulting in some pretty unique creations.

Check Out: Sindart Miru Wong recently became the third generation to inherit the Sindart legacy after her father and grandfather made a name for themselves with beautifully embroidered shoes.

Wong studied at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and has helped modernize the business to keep it alive. All of Sindart’s shoes are handmade and very delicate. The family business also sells children’s shoes in case you’re keen to spoil the little ones.

8Brass Fixtures

Brass fixings and furnishings have been popular in China since ancient times. The metal is commonly used as accents on large wooden pieces, such as door handles, trunk locks, chairs and beds.

9Canvas Bags

These nylon canvas totes, affectionately known to Hongkongers as “red-white-blue” bags, first appeared in Hong Kong during the 70s and have gone on to become a symbol of the city.

Check Out: Wah Ngai Canvas Shop Red, white and blue canvas bags have been a Hong Kong staple for decades. Light, durable and inexpensive, it seems as if every family has at least 10 of these bags. You can attribute the ubiquitousness, at least in part, to Lee Wah who owns Wah Ngai Canvas Shop. Known as the “Father of Red White and Blue,” Lee was the first to start manufacturing the bags in Hong Kong. Today, Lee’s store still sells the iconic

totes, which are typically used as a cheap and easy alternative to plastic bags.

10Custom Printing

During the 1950s, small printing shops began gathering along Lee Tung Street, and the area quickly became famous for affordable and custom-made wedding invitations, thus earning the name “Wedding Card Street.” Sadly, the Urban Renewal Authority demolished the street in 2005, which displaced most of the wedding card shops.

Check Out: Good Day Though Wan Chai’s lively Wedding Card Street may have disappeared, there are still one or two old gems in action.

In business for more than 20 years, Good Day specializes in producing wedding invitations and lai see envelopes, as well as custom-printing services. Visit the shop and the staff members will walk you through every step of the design to help you create unique invitations.

First up: Centamap (hk.centamap. com) was Google Maps before Google ever set foot in Hong Kong.

Developed by Centaline Property, the bilingual site may be stuck in a hellish early-2000s Geocities/Lycos version of the internet, but it uses official maps from the government’s Survey and Mapping Office That makes it about 7 million times more accurate than Apple’s Maps. It even allows you to overlay census data. Ever wanted to know how many people living in Mong Kok own their own houses? Now you can. Nerd.

Too geeky for you? Then look up the Cantonese-only HKGolden Forum (www.hkgolden.com). It

was named after Sham Shui Po’s legendary Golden Computer Centre, and launched by the Centre’s traders in the 90s—although if you recall the Golden Computer Centre of the 90s, it was mostly pirated video games and Photoshop CDs. The forum launched in 2000 and soon went from computer-only chat to more general subjects. These days it’s a hive of villainy, virality, news and opinion, and one of the main sculptors of Hong Kong pop culture. Read some news online?

The ad read, “Hong Kong citizens are forced to donate $100 million to corrupt officials.” On the Hong Kong internet, only three things hold true: LOLCats, memes—and protest.

Home Hunting Luxury Market Stalls as We Move to the Close of the Year How are we fairing as we head for the tail end of the Year of the Snake?

Are we going to trot or gallop our way into the Year of the Horse?

Oh how nice it would be to have a crystal ball. Sadly, we do not have one, so we have to look at our market research and historical data and, based on our market knowledge, make informed predictions as possible.

The overall luxury market rental has certainly been quieter this year, with a particular slow up in the number of families relocating to Hong Kong from the financial sector. This has led to a decrease in rental values of approximately 2.6% by end of 3Q. Now I can hear some tenants saying that their rents have not come down, or it has been hard to negotiate with the landlords or there has been no stock available. The market is very disparate at present.

If you sit within the rental group of $40K to $80K, then you are right, you have not seen a reduction. This rental group has been very active with industry groups other than the financial services. Tenants who have sat in higher rental groups and who are being localised are downsizing and, therefore, are spending less.

We have the same scenario in terms of areas; rentals in most areas have come down, except in the New Territories, in particular Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay, where rentals have risen. There was a significant migration to this area over the summer because of the opening of Hong Kong Academy in Sai Kung and Kellett in Kowloon Bay. This has led to a shortage of stock and, hence, a rise in rents.

Looking forward, I do not believe that the rentals at present have taken into account the number of leasing vacancies or the number of new properties we expect to come onto the market for lease because of the stagnant sales market. I believe that the 4Q results will show bigger decreases, and that the downward trend will continue into the Year of the Horse with a reasonable trot.
