Our Picks for the month
Shen Chao-liang
Through December
Shen Chao-liang: Stage
Since the 70s, nomadic cabaret groups in Taiwan have been entertaining guests at weddings, funerals and everything in between, recently incorporating elements such as pole dancing, acrobatics, magic, folk arts, and male strip shows to the traditional dance and singing performances. “Stage” by veteran Taiwanese photographer Shen Chao-liang is based on performances that he followed around Taiwan from 2006 to 2012. The exhibition aims to capture the colorful art of the country’s roving “truck theaters.” Through Jan 12. The Salt Yard, 4/F, B1, Jone Mult Industrial Building, 169 Wai Yip St., Kwun Tong.
Through Dec 21
Carne Griffiths: Invisible Lines
Round up the whole family for a trip to the Winter Mega Showcase, which takes place at the HKCEC. The event will be split into different categories, including a shopping zone and a food area. Not a bad alternative at all to a traditional Christmas.
“The tension between different objects, between ourselves and nature, between people, emotions and feelings; these can all be described in a drawing with simple lines.” That’s Liverpool-born artist Carne Griffiths, whose first solo exhibition in Asia will introduce his signature geometric balance and free lines to Hong Kong. Along with his work on paper, Griffiths has also teamed up with Marlow Guitars to present two hand-illustrated electrics.
HKCEC, 1 Expo Drive, Wan Chai. $10 at the door.

Holidays in Macau Check out the festive events and promotions at the Sheraton Macao this month. The Sheraton is offering mouthwatering dining specials, including Christmas-inspired spreads at Feast. And of course, it wouldn’t do to go through winter without a hot-pot—so check out the soupy goodness on offer at Xin. Sheraton Macao Hotel, Estrada do Istmo, Cotai, Macau, (+853) 2880-2000.
Featuring a lineup of big names and up-and-coming talents, Clockenflap 2013 drew crowds from Hong Kong and abroad. The turnout is no surprise: there was beer aplenty, sunny skies, great harbor views and delicious bites from the likes of Butchers Club and 85 South. We’re already counting down to next year!

Byredo Oud Immortel Perfume Even though it’s not the scent I’m using right now, this is the one I would recommend. Made in Sweden, Byredo is a very hard brand to find since it has incredibly selective wholesale, but it’s worth the search. Simply the best you can get.
Skinceuticals Daily Moisture I’m not a huge fan of slapping creams on my face, but when I have to, I use this one. It’s very light, easy to apply and does the job. I buy mine at Gentleman’s Tonic in the Landmark basement.
Squarestreet SQ03 Minuteman watch Not only does it have amazing finish and style, but it also gives me a more relaxed timescale thanks to individual minutes being impossible to distinguish on the face.

Cire Trudon Candles In particular, I enjoy the Spiritus Sancti, Abd el Kader and Carmelite scents. These are amazing hand-crafted adornments to any home. Get one for every room! You can find them at the General Store on Gage Street.
Saturdays Surf NYC Black Surf Shorts
Paraboots I bought these trusty Paraboots in Seoul and have used them until they look nothing like the pair in this picture. True schoolboy aesthetics and I highly recommended them for anyone who, like me, is slightly tired of wearing every new flyknit shoe that’s released.
I had no idea when I purchased these that they would be able to go from restaurant to beach to bar and back to beach without missing a beat. They’re made with indestructible quality, subdued styling and a fabric that is completely stain-resistant.
Nanamica Cycling Backpack Although I don’t use it for cycling, this backpack is extremely versatile and will carry almost anything you throw at it without looking like you’re off to climb the North Face. It’s both good-looking and practical.

Think Inside the Box
Nuts for Ballet
Balance out all of your holiday wining, dining and budget-blowing shopping sprees with a gift that’ll help take care of Hong Kong’s homeless citizens during winter. Working alongside the Society for Community Organization, the Inside the Box charity drive is collecting care packages filled with all kinds of useful and thoughtful goods. It’s as simple as it sounds: fill a shoebox with a few things that you take for granted every day—think toothbrushes, liquid soap, hats, scarves, crackers, card decks, inflatable pillows and blankets. Drop off your boxes at one of the designated points before December 17—and don’t forget to decorate it with festive goodwill.
The Hong Kong Ballet’s version of Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” is an essential part of the Hong Kong Christmas season. This year they’ve teamed up with Australian choreographer Terence Kohler and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta for a week-long run—so cross it off the bucket list this year and bring your mother. You should really call her more often, no?

Head to Ocean Park for a day of underwater holiday shenanigans. You’ll meet the (possibly mysterious) “Ocean Santa,” see aerial acrobats explore a shipwreck, and witness the lighting of a marine-bedecked Christmas tree. December also marks the launch of a marine conservation campaign, complete with a fable of human-animal friendship at the Ocean Theatre. Aww. Ocean Santa, you make our day.

Koala Christmas As part of its Glittering Christmas Village festivities, Ngong Ping Village will play host to more than 100 koalas. No, they’re not the eucalyptus-bingeing tiny bears—these 6-foot-tall “koalas” will be doling out Lotte’s Koala March biscuits and spreading cheer in the form of hugs and photo-ops. It’s not just limited to giant koalas. You can also steal a few minutes with Santa—who’s apparently handing out surprise gifts (could they be Koala cookies?)—partake in a balloon-twisting workshop and hum alongside Christmas carols to your heart’s content. And even if all that jazz isn’t what you had in mind, don’t worry: the cable car ride to the Big Buddha looks particularly stunning when the whole village is lit up for Christmas.

Tong Tied Dear Mr. KIA, A friend of mine keeps talking about this “tong lau” that she’s renting. What is a tong lau, exactly, and why are people obsessed with them? – Longing for a Tong Lau The name “tong lau” literally just means “Chinese building,” but it most often refers to the walk-up tenements that dot the older, more interesting bits of the city. Built in the earlier days of Hong Kong, they’re great if you like big flats with tall ceilings— and not so great if you don’t like walking up six flights of stairs with your shopping. (A side note: Taiwan has a name for its own Tudor-, neoclassical- and Gothicstyle colonial buildings. They’re known as “yeung lau”— “Western buildings”).
42
Early tong laus looked quite a lot more like the shophouses of the rest of Asia, rather than the straightforward walk-ups we think of these days. That’s because shophouses are exactly what they were, of course: the store owner would sleep above his shop and the floors above would be subdivided for extra profit. The best example of this, with a touch of English neoclassicism thrown into the mix, is probably what’s now The Pawn (62 Johnston Rd., Wan Chai). Some history: the Public Health and Buildings Ordinance of 1903 limited building height to a maximum of four stories. This defined the general size and shape of the tong lau, governed as it was by the Hong Kong construction ethos: build high, build fast. And in 1903, that was four floors high. But by the middle of the century, a flood of refugees from the Chinese Revolution into Hong Kong meant that the territory was hurting for space. A 1953 Christmas Day fire destroyed the shantytown of Shek Kip Mei, leaving 53,000 mainland immigrants without homes. It finally pushed the government into developing a public housing scheme: by 1955 the height restrictions were lifted, and Hong Kong’s buildings stretched for the sky.

Property see a decrease. Your flat does have a nice size and outside space, which is always a premium, but I’m not sure where your landlord got the 46% increase from.
Home Hunting Big Rise in Rent Hi Anne-Marie, First of all, thank you for your advice. I have been reading this section from time to time as we can always get some useful tips/advice here regarding housing in Hong Kong, especially for expats like me. OK, on to my story now. I have been living in my apartment with my fiancée for nearly two years. It’s quite good, and we both love it here. We are planning to get married in the middle of next year. However, three weeks ago, our landlord told us that the rent will increase by 46% starting January 2014. It’s totally out of our expectation, though we do expect there will be an increment. We are now paying nearly $60K per month. Our house is in Mid-levels, and we love the environment here so much. Below are what we are having with our flat: • 1,700 sq ft • Two bedrooms • Large balcony • Good, peaceful green view • A well-furnished open kitchen • Swimming pool and gymnasium • 10–15 minute walk to Central Is there any way to negotiate with our landlord to lower the increment, though we know that residential rent is rising recently? If there is none, can we find a similar apartment or have even better choices based on the list above and our budget? Hope to receive your advice soon. Thank you! First, congratulations, and, second, you can certainly negotiate. Contrary to your statement regarding rentals, they are going down not up. Luxury rentals have come down by just under 5% y-o-y for 2013, and we are predicting that rentals will continue to fall throughout 2014 or certainly for the first half. That said, there is quite a disparity among different rental groups. So, if the rent like yours sits on the $40K–80K bracket, then you would be under pressure to at least pay the same, if not have a slight increase, whereas rentals over $100K would certainly
It would be difficult to find another flat with the same specifications, as a flat with a large balcony with facilities and one that is near Central is always hard to find. I suggest you negotiate hard and try to find out how much other tenants in the building are paying so you have something to compare with. Good luck!
A Place Good for Everyone in My Family Dear Anne-Marie, I have been living in Taikoo Shing with my husband and two kids, and am now looking for a nice place for long-term living. Our biggest concern right now is that my parents will also live with us. Because of this, the environment of our house must be good, with better air, more green and less vehicles. Moreover, my husband is working in Kwun Tong. We want a place that is more accessible for him, now that he needs to drive for 15–20 minutes from Taikoo Shing to Kwun Tong. We hope that the new place is close to his office. After a brief market study and based on the two conditions above, we would like to look for choices in Sai Kung, as it seems fit for what we require. Below are our requirements: • Actual living space of 3,000–4,000 sq ft • Two storeys • Four bedrooms • Close to bus stops or metros • Green view and, hopefully, some sea view • Good clubhouse facilities • Two parking spaces Do you have any suggestions for $140K per month place in Sai Kung? Is this rental rate good enough to cover our requirements? We also expect a good school nearby for our kids who are in kindergarten. We plan to move next year. Do you have any good suggestions for international school? When choosing a school for my kids, what are the most important things that I should pay attention to? Thank you very much! Well, first, Sai Kung or Clearwater Bay would certainly be the best option in terms of work accessibility, and there are now quite a few schooling options in these areas. The problem is your housing requirements.
Two-storey apartments are almost impossible to find, as all village houses have three floors, and even most villas are on multi half levels. There are only a handful of colonial houses that have two floors. With your budget, you should be able to lease in most properties in this area. The developments that would potentially meet most of your requirements are—The Giverney, The Riviera, Portofino, Floral Villas, Bella Vista, to name a few. There are several kindergartens in the area. In the north side of Sai Kung, there is Leapfrog in the Sai Kung Country Park and ESF International Kindergarten (Wu Kai Sha) in Ma On Shan. Further south, in the Marina Cove complex, you will find Woodland Preschool. Further downwards into Clearwater Bay there are Sai Kung International Preschool (SKIP), Sunshine House, Garden House, ESF Abacus, and, then, in Po Lam, you will find the new Mills International Preschool. All of them offer different programmes and different time options, so I recommend checking their web sites and giving them a call for a visit to see how their programmes compare to what your children are currently learning. It is a good idea to consider the kind of long-term curriculum you would like your children to follow e.g., local, US, UK, IB, among others, as this will help you focus on how complimentary the pre-school will be to your long-term plans. It is also sensible to ask if they offer school buses, and where they go so your children can avail their service. The international schools considered by many families who live in that area include the newly opened campus of Hong Kong Academy in north Sai Kung, Renaissance College in Ma On Shan, ESF Clearwater Bay School, and, of course, the newly opened Kellett School in Kowloon Bay. It is quite a choice, so good luck in your research and your move! Got property related questions? Ask the expert. Your questions will be answered in this column on the 15th of every month, exclusively in The List!

ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH
WHY WE LIKE IT Even if you aren’t religious, there’s always something magical about churches at Christmas time. As Kowloon’s oldest Protestant church, St. Andrew’s is worth a visit. Church records say the building was erected in 1905, replacing a humble wooden chapel where Kowloon worshippers congregated. The church spent some time as a Shinto shrine during the Japanese occupation of World War II, during which the local chief of the Japanese secret police occupied the Old Vicarage. After being restored in 1959, the church has served as an Anglican church ever since. Worthy of note is the distinctive early Gothic-style granite and red brick façade, the pointed arched windows and colorful stained glass windows. To really get you in the Christmas spirit, the church is expected to be fully decorated, nativity and all, by mid-December.
