Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association A gentle, non-impact sport that utilizes most of the muscle groups of the body, it’s obvious why lawn bowls is fast becoming popular across all age groups—it’s not just for senior citizens anymore! The HKLBA currently organizes two league competitions every year: the Premier League and the Triples League, which both play on Saturday afternoons throughout the year. The HKLBA offers youth, beginners and intermediate courses for 8- to 17-year-olds, as well as adult beginner and intermediate courses. Training venues include the

Hong Kong Parkour Association Developed in France to be a kind of sophisticated obstacle course activity that usually takes place in urban spaces, Parkour practitioners use various techniques— including climbing, rolling and leaping—to practically fly up obstacles that are in their path. Digit drama Dear Mr. Know-It-All, Auspicious numbers confuse me. I understand that “4” is unlucky and “8” is good news: but is that all there is to it? – Number Wang It’s simple, Number Wang. Auspicious numbers have nothing to do with numerology at all. In fact, it’s all to do with homophones. What Cantonese numbers sound like is what’s most important. Here are a few worth knowing: 3: Lucky. Sounds like “birth,” or “life.” 4: Unlucky. Sounds like “death.” Best expressed in older buildings that lack a fourth floor, or indeed, any floor numbers containing “4” at all.
5: Unlucky. Sounds like “Not.” Although consequently “54” becomes “not-death”—i.e. it’s lucky. 6: Both. Sounds both like the words for “blessing” and also for “fall.” 7: Unlucky. Means stupid or cringe-worthy. But this one’s lucky in Putonghua, where it sounds like “together.” 8: Jackpot. Sounds like “prosperity” and the numeral looks like the character for “happiness.” This, of course, is why buildings such as the IFC have 88 floors. Even smaller buildings, like the one at 39 Conduit Rd., for example, often label their top floor 88, even if it’s only the 46th story in real life. This can all get more complicated when you start combining numbers. So: “9413” means “nine deaths, one life”—i.e. 90 percent chance of death, 10 percent chance of survival. “1314” sounds like “one life, one lifetime”—i.e. forever. This gets particularly interesting when you get multilingual: in Putonghua “521” sounds like “I love you.” So, if a Pearl River Delta dweller chases you down the street shouting “5211314!”, be comforted. They’re not some kind of number-savant. They’re just shouting, in the most efficient way they know how: “I love you forever!” Mathematics: the most perfect language of all.

WHY WE LIKE IT Situated near the Diamond Hill MTR station in Kowloon, Nan Lian is a tranquil landscape garden thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perfect for a quiet afternoon. The 3.5-hectare park, maintained by the nearby Chi Lin Nunnery, was designed in the classical style of the Tang Dynasty (618-907AD), which means there are carefully placed rocks, lush plants, timber structures and water features. Opened to the public in 2006 as a place for quiet reflection, 50
Nan Lian Garden offers respite from city life and a glimpse into ancient Chinese culture. Should all that pondering make you work up an appetite, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a food kiosk, vegetarian restaurant and tea house on site.
GETTING THERE Take Kwun Tong MTR line to Diamond Hill station and use exit C2. Nan Lian Garden is across from the station. Open daily from 7am to 9pm. Free admission.
