La Scala Ballet: Giselle

For those familiar with the ballet world, the name La Scala needs little introduction. The 230-year-old Milanbased group is one of the most famed ballet companies in Italy—and the world, for that matter—and many of its dancers have gone on to achieve international fame, including Mara Galeazzi, Roberto Bolle and Carla Fracci. So it’s no surprise that Hongkongers have jumped so aggressively on ticket pre-sales for the staging of “Giselle,” a melancholy masterpiece that’s considered the greatest of all Romantic ballets. Choreographer Yvette Chauviré works with Adolphe Adam’s melody-filled score to capture the joys and dejections of unrequited love—an emotional journey for those lucky enough to score a seat. 7:30pm. Let’sTalk About Sex Andrea Lo and Jayson Albano quiz the experts on sex education, dating in Hong Kong and the LGBT community.

Secondary education teacher Thomas Russell discusses Hong Kong’s culture, dating scene and sex education. He also introduces his project Sticky Rice Love, which will launch next month as an online sex education curriculum and forum for young people. The List: How does Hong Kong culture affect the dating scene? Thomas Russell: I feel the ubiquity of 7-Elevens and smartphones in people’s lives generates excessive expectations of speed and instant reciprocity, at least in young people. For example, if someone doesn’t text you back within an hour (or a week, for that matter) it doesn’t mean they don’t love you. This means people run into relationships rather quickly, and may not take time to get to know their partner. The List: How important is Valentine’s Day to people in Hong Kong? TR: Commercially, very important, but it is socially important as well. In relationships, many people rely on what I’ve dubbed STAs, or Symbolic Tokens of Affection. These are things such as expensive gifts that indicate your commitment. Valentine’s Day is one such STA. In truth you don’t need it, but ignore it at your peril.

The List: Why might dating seem difficult in Hong Kong? TR: Firstly, there is an unrealistic expectation of love, sex and relationships. It’s hard not to succumb to the cultural zeitgeist of finding true love and living happily ever after. It often takes several relationships to properly understand your own needs anyway, and once you understand yourself better, you can find a good fit. The List: And secondly? TR: Gender role expectations are still persistent in Hong Kong. Chinese women are still expected to be passive, cutesy and far too thin. Both genders come in all types, and we should celebrate that. The List: Can you expand on the city’s perceived commercial culture? TR: In Hong Kong, affection is often “bought” with material goods and commodities. Gifts may be nice, but shared experiences create memories and stronger connections. Forget handbags: go cycling, sailing or bungee jumping. The List: What’s the deal with the reported “sex shortage”? TR: It’s a mix of pragmatic issues and social attitudes. Sex is less celebrated, talked about and understood in Hong Kong for a start. Young people lack comprehensive sex and relationship education and learn from a young age that it is not proper to talk about sex. The List: And the pragmatic issues? TR: The price of a square foot of space means that many adults live with their parents. Since sex is perceived as shameful, neither the parents nor the younger generation get it on much! This is why hourly love hotels are abundant and popular. Time constraints and stress are also two

well-known libido killers, and Hong Kong has an abundance of both. The List: You mentioned inadequate sex education. What do you mean? TR: Sex education in local schools is almost completely absent for a number of reasons: 1) It is not mandatory; 2) there is a variety of religious and cultural opposition; and 3) teachers are uncomfortable talking about it. The List: What are the consequences? TR: People grow up lacking that basic skill of knowing how to put a condom on. This creates many serious public health issues: Hong Kong has one of the highest abortion rates

Sex therapist and social worker at the Hong Kong Institute of Education Dr. Diana Kwok researches LGBT and sex education issues. She explains how inadequate sex education affects Hongkongers. The List: What is the role of a sex therapist? Dr. Diana Kwok: Sex therapists are mental health professionals who specialize in sexual issues, which may include health concerns, child and adolescent sexual issues and adult sexual dysfunctions, as well as gender and sexual orientation concerns. The List: What are your specialties? DK: People come to me because of sexual orientation issues, such as gender identity concerns or challenges with coming out. Additionally, parents of kids who want to get into the medical system come to me, because they want to find out more about gender reassignment surgery. The List: How would you describe local attitudes towards sex? DK: We have traditional cultural thinking. Because of our

in the developed world, and only 21 percent of young men and 45 percent of young women use condoms regularly, according to the Family Planning Association’s 2011 study. The List: Can you tell us about Sticky Rice Love? TR: My colleagues and I are currently developing a youthgenerated online sex education curriculum by using questions and stories to stimulate discussion. We think this kind of online open forum model is the best way to reach a large number of people. Sex is a fundamental human experience, and we should arm young people with enough knowledge, early enough, to make their own choices and lead happy, fulfilling lives. colonial history, we have a lot of Catholic schools—and how schools teach sex forms our attitude towards sexuality. The List: In what ways? DK: Knowledge about how sexuality and gender are interrelated is not part of the sex education curriculum. Perspectives from queer theory are neither included nor reflected in the two most current curricula. There is no mention of homophobia, heterosexism, or heteronormativity as subjects for classroom discussion. The List: What problems result from these omissions? DK: There are some young people who engage in “compensative dating.” Young girls date men and then receive gifts and money. Sometimes they do have sex—but they are normally schoolgirls who find customers online. Some of them are doing it for money, but some of them do it for sexual pleasure. Or they do it to fund their schooling—quite a few I have interviewed came from underprivileged families. The List: How can this be prevented? DK: Avoid stigmatization. Not all of these women are working for money; some of them see their jobs as an opportunity to explore their sexual identities and to find sexual partners who will satisfy sexual pleasures. Sexuality education in school should cover broader issues and topics, in addition to sexual risk prevention. Young people should learn about diverse sexual identities and sexual pleasure in affirmative and accommodating ways.

Joseph Phua is the founder of popular dating app Paktor, which literally translates to “dating.” Phua shares his views on the Hong Kong dating scene.

The List: Is it hard to date in Hong Kong? Joseph Phua: I wouldn’t say it’s difficult. People in Hong Kong are just too busy, and hence find it difficult to squeeze out time and put an effort into dating. The List: Why might it seem difficult to date in Hong Kong? JP: There’s an increased pace of life in Hong Kong and a lack

of time. Although this is not unique to Hong Kong, this is probably more pronounced in this country. The List: As of 2012, there were 876 men for every 1,000 women in Hong Kong. How does this affect the dating scene? JP: There are more females in Hong Kong than males. For sure, this would result in increased competition and affect the chances of finding romance. Although society has a way of balancing things out: for example, by looking for love beyond the shores of Hong Kong, I believe that more people will turn to various “love” tools to increase their chances. The List: What’s the best thing people can do to start dating? JP: Make a commitment to yourself to spend a short amount of time daily focused on pursuing your other half. Be it through an app, or going to the bar, or getting introduced by friends. Once you start this process, everything becomes easier.

Dear Mr. Know-It-All, I love roads. I love thoroughfares. I love alleys. What is the most interesting street in Hong Kong? – Streets Ahead There are plenty of paths which could fall under that designation, Streets Ahead, but here’s one of the most rarely visited: Chung Ying Street in Sha Tau Kok, northeastern Hong Kong. The street sits at the edge of the Closed Area, the rural buffer zone which separates Hong Kong from Shenzhen. Chung Ying, literally “China-England,” is one country, two systems at its most literal. At one end of the road, Hong Kong; at the other, China. In the 80s and the 90s, the street saw up to 70,000 Chinese tourists a day. As the only border in Hong Kong without any kind of checkpoint, mainlanders would flood in to buy luxury goods from the Hong Kong side of the road. At its peak, 47 of the street’s 50 stores sold gold. The road was rigorously patrolled by police, who had to distinguish between Sha

Tau Kok locals, permitted to pass freely between the two countries, and others who wanted to smuggle merchandise—or themselves—into the territory. At the height of the 1997 bird flu outbreak, for example, the police were on continuous watch for people smuggling banned live poultry into the city. But the street has lived on as a minor tourist attraction, and a site of small-scale smuggling: Closed Area permitholders shuttle goods across the border and once in Shenzhen, couriers speed it farther inland. If you want to see it, it’s actually far easier to go to Shenzhen and visit from that side. These days there’s a museum and a few attractions: but Chung Ying Street has fallen far, far from its heyday as the street that spanned empires.

Housed in a converted church, the museum showcases more than 100 historical artifacts, which tell the incredible life story of Dr Sun Yat-sen. Considered the “Father of modern China,” Dr Sun Yat-sen was the founder of the Republic of China and its first president. He led an eventful life, full of political struggle and frequent exile.
