A Midsummer Night’s Dream

This Shakespeare production is a collaboration between Bristol Old Vic Artistic Director Tom Morris and Cape Town’s Handspring Puppet Company— the fine folks behind the global hit “War Horse,” which demonstrated that clever, large-scale puppetry has the ability to elevate the magic of stage performance to brand, spankin’ new heights. In its Asian premiere, this staging of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a rare treat, capturing all the love, laughter, friends, foes and fairies that the play has to offer. Don’t miss this imaginative retelling of an already fantastical classic.

Thinking about raising your children in Hong Kong? Kate Springer and Andrea Lo talk to experts in education, language and real estate to help you make the big decisions.

The Open Classroom

Agnes Kong A banker turned educator, Pods Kindergarten & Preschool co-founder Agnes Kong discusses the pros and cons of Hong Kong’s school system. www.pods.com.hk

The List: Can you tell us a little about your background? Agnes Kong: I grew up in Hong Kong, and then went to Yale University. My first job was in investment banking, but it wasn’t my true passion. Starting a kindergarten has always been a dream of mine. I switched into education with my business partner, Yvonne. We started The Open Classroom in 2009. Since then, we’ve launched Pods Kindergarten, Little Pods playgroup and summer programs, such as Young Leaders of Tomorrow and 9 Paths. The List: What are some of the positive aspects of a Hong Kong education? AK: Having gone to a local school and having gone through the HKCEE and A levels, I was used to the academic rigor, so studying in the U.S. for college was a breeze in comparison. I was also brought up to impose high standards on myself and to put my best in everything, which I guess is a good trait to have.

14

Little Pods

The List: What are the trade-offs? AK: Hong Kong students are not really exposed to what career options are out there. Today, kids seem to have more opportunities, but the idea of judging success by how much money you make is still prevalent. The List: What have you observed about Hong Kong parents? AK: Now that I see kids and parents from preschool all the way to high school, I am sometimes shocked by how much parents do for their kids. [They should] encourage children to take risks and do things on their own. Otherwise, when they leave their shelter and come out into the real world, failure can be more costly. The List: What’s the best thing parents can do to further their child’s early education? AK: Focus on developing your child’s unique learning style and talents, rather than molding the child into what you think will make him or her competitive. In the grand scheme of things, being successful entails more than just certificates. The List: What’s the concept behind Pods? AK: Pods stands for Presentation skills, Observation skills, Discovery and Social skills. Our curriculum aims to instill a love of learning, champion individual talents, nurture creativity and build character. We also have some Montessori-inspired activities, which promote self-discipline and concentration.

Young Leaders of Tomorrow Summer Leadership Program 2013

Anne-Marie Sage The head of residential leasing and relocation services at Jones Lang LaSalle, Anne-Marie Sage talks about the most family-friendly neighborhoods in Hong Kong. www.joneslanglasalle.com.hk

The List: Can you tell us a little about your background? Anne-Marie Sage: I have lived in Hong Kong since 1987 and

am currently living in Sai Kung with my husband and two children. I joined Jones Lang LaSalle in 2004 to head up the leasing and relocation department, where I specialize in the relocation of families into Hong Kong and general luxury leasing. The List: Based on your experience with properties in Hong Kong, what neighborhoods do you think are best for kids? AMS: I often tell clients that they have to prioritize what is most important to them as a family. If you live on Hong Kong Island or in Kowloon, then you are likely to live in an apartment—many of which have full club-type facilities. If you want to have more outdoor space and a more quiet lifestyle, then Discovery Bay, Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay are great options—but then you do have a commute either by ferry or car. For most of us, wherever you live in Hong Kong you are no more than 45 minutes from Central.

The List: What’s the idea behind The Young Leaders of Tomorrow? AK: Young Leaders of Tomorrow is designed to promote leadership, self-awareness and a service mindset. A lot of high school students seem torn between pressure from family and society and pursuing their interests and talents. During YLOT, we bring in leaders from different fields, such as film directors or entrepreneurs, to talk about their careers. We also facilitate social responsibilty by parterning with NGOs, so students can develop their own projects. Basically, I try to provide experiences that they wouldn’t get in a classroom of 40 kids.

The List: Which areas have the best schools? AMS: Everyone’s opinion of the best schools is different, depending on a family’s desires for their children. Parents really do have to visit schools and do their homework. That being said, most neighborhoods have access to good international schools. The List: Is Hong Kong a good place to raise children? AMS: Yes—like most experiences in life, you gain on some

things and maybe miss out on others. Personally, my children have gained from being brought up in a multicultural city, and they have benefited from extensive travel in this part of the world. But they do miss out on spending time with family, because we’re living so far away from our home country. And, of course, there is always the hot topic of pollution that many parents feel is not acceptable. The List: What are some things that parents should look for when buying or renting a flat with children? AMS: Most of us live in high-rise blocks, so ensuring that windows and doors have correct child-safety locks is very important. It is always good to do some homework as to what other families might be living in the same building, so your children will have friends. Some outside area or easy access to a park is also nice to have.

The List: What about if you’re on a budget? AMS: If you live on Hong Kong Island, then you need to

go farther east or west of Central to find more affordable accommodation. [Parts of] the southside and The Peak are very prohibitive when it comes to affordability. If you go further afield, like the New Territories or the outlying islands, you can certainly get more for your money.

This could be your family’s pad: The Lily, 129 Repulse Bay Rd.

Dr. Stephen Matthews A professor at the University of Hong Kong, Dr. Stephen Matthews specializes in linguistics. He and his wife Virginia Yip are in charge of the Childhood Bilingualism Research Centre. He shares his insight on children learning Cantonese and Putonghua as second languages. The List: What is your background and area of expertise? Stephen Matthews: My wife and I both did PhDs in Linguistics at the University of Southern California. Virginia’s expertise was in how people—especially Chinese people—learn a second language. Mine is in the grammar of different types of language. When we were expecting our own children, we began to study how children become bilingual. The List: When should kids starting learning Cantonese/Putonghua? SM: There are advantages to learning either as early as possible.

16

The extreme case is that of “simultaneous” bilinguals who are exposed to two or more languages from birth. We would describe our three children this way: they are fluent in English and Cantonese, and have been since age 3 or so. The List: Comparing Cantonese and Putonghua, how useful is one versus the other? How widely are they each spoken? SM: For people planning to live and work in Hong Kong, we have always said Cantonese—since it is the most widely spoken. I would argue that this still holds, and also that much of Cantonese culture would be inaccessible if one does not learn Cantonese. That said, outside of Hong Kong, it is increasingly the case that Putonghua is more widely spoken and understood. Whichever you choose, it’s worth bearing in mind that knowing either language gives you a big head start if you ever need to learn the other. The List: Are there any drawbacks in choosing to have your children learn Putonghua over Cantonese, and vice versa? SM: If they choose Putonghua, the kids will not be able to be a part of local culture. If they choose Cantonese, they may have to switch when they go to primary school.

The List: Would you recommend that children learn both languages simultaneously? SM: We know this is possible, but beginning both at the same time could be confusing. Most of our students have learnt Putonghua as a second or third language, and most can use it to get by. The List: Is Putonghua becoming more widely spoken in Hong Kong? Will it one day overtake Cantonese? SM: Yes—while Cantonese is still the dominant language in Hong Kong, there are signs of a language shift. For example: local schools are increasingly teaching Chinese literacy through Putonghua instead of Cantonese; this changes the balance at school, at home and eventually in the community too. The List: What are some reasons behind this trend? SM: Some Cantonese-speaking parents are choosing to school their children in Putonghua and/or English instead. Typically, they say that their children will not get into the best schools if they speak Cantonese. Their concern for the children’s economic future seems stronger than their attachment to their native language.

Hong Kong Kids The List staff reminisces about growing up in Hong Kong—and why it rocks. Thanks mom and dad! • You’re not scared of “weird” foods—actually, foods that don’t look like exotic animal parts are weird to you. • It’s a unique experience to grow up in a city that mixes elegant heritage buildings with super-modern skyscrapers. • You find it easier than most to move around the world and call new places home. • You can pretty much identify, and often impersonate, every single English accent. • You can be on the beach or in the mountains within 20 minutes. • There are as many trees as there are high-rises… at least for now. • You grow up exposed to three languages: Cantonese, English and Putonghua. • The whole Asian continent is at your doorstep.

Bring the World Home “If you travel a lot for work, try to weave your experiences in with your children’s lives. When I travel to different countries, I try to buy children’s books in that language or CDs of local music. When I come home, my kids can experience the country that I just visited. Kids are curious and they want to know details about where you went.” Take a Break “Every working mom knows how difficult the work-life balance can be. My advice is at least once a year, treat

yourself to a short vacation without the kids. It gives you something to look forward to and allows you a few days to recharge. Last year, I flew to Munich and Berlin for four days just to relax and visit museums. It was a wonderful holiday. By the fourth day, I missed my family and was ready to come home. The best part: I was well-rested and ready to dive back in!” Get Creative “My colleague at CNN once showed me a robot he and his daughter made with paper towel rolls. It was fabulous, and I copied the idea. For weeks, I asked my daughters to save toilet paper and paper towel rolls. When we had enough rolls, we taped them together to make the robot’s arms, legs and head. Then we covered it in metallic gold wrapping paper. We glued eyes onto the head. It was an ongoing project and lots of fun.”

2. Cream of the Crop: Don’t be stingy with stretch mark cream. Apply lavishly all over the body, not just over the bump. 3. Meals Matter: Eating for two is a myth! It is not the quantity you eat during pregnancy that is important, it’s the quality. Watch the weight gain, or shedding the extra pounds could be tough. 4. Style Secrets: You are not likely to fit into your pre-pregnancy clothes anytime soon, so make yourself feel and look great with maternity and nursing clothes that flatter your bump and post-partum figure.

What to Expect

5. Perk Up: Enjoy your full bosom while it lasts! Your boobs may sag and shrink after you stop breastfeeding.

Mother and franchise owner of Mothers en Vogue in Hong Kong, Vicki Soh shares nine fruitful pregnancy tips. 1. Sick Days: Morning sickness can hit you in the morning, afternoon and night—and not just during the first trimester.

The List

6. Stress Factor: As the Chinese saying goes, “You raise your child to 100 years old and you worry for 99 years.” Paranoia is a common “side effect” of pregnancy and, being a mom, you will never stop

worrying about your baby. 7. Name Game: Choosing a baby name can be stressful. Keep a list of boy and girl names that you like, so you’re ready when the time comes. 8. Do Your Homework: There are tons of resources available on every related topic, from what to expect during pregnancy, breastfeeding, setting routines, parenting and so forth. You won’t be able to remember everything, so flag what works for you and go with your instinct! 9. Babymoon: Time flies so quickly, so enjoy the pregnancy and bask in all the love and pampering while it lasts. It’s the perfect husband and wife bonding time—enjoy it before the baby turns your lives upside down. Mothers en Vogue: Unit 1, 17/F, Crawford House, 70 Queen’s Rd. So Wired What’s up with Apliu Street in Sham Shui Po? Why is there just so much… stuff… everywhere? – Electronics Overload There’s always been a market on Apliu Street. The area is one of Hong Kong’s oldest: the street itself it was originally a village, well known for raising ducks—“ap liu” means “duck coop.” As Sham Shui Po expanded (it once lay on the waterline, believe it or not), Ap Liu Village became Apliu Street. In the 1930s, the market transformed from a village street into a market for secondhand goods: the “Cat Street of Kowloon.” Vinyl record stalls

were a popular addition: Paul Au of Vinyl Hero (Flat D, 5/F, Wai Hong Building, 239 Cheung Sha Wan Rd., Sham Shui Po, 9841-7136) spent years flogging old records on Apliu Street before moving his collection just around the corner. And that flea market feel has never left. But when the 1960s hit Hong Kong, Ap Liu Street was at the forefront of the Made in Hong Kong revolution: the whole area retooled itself as an electronics parts hub, with everything from resistors and transistors to vacuum tubes and circuit-breakers. For a while, the government even tried to brand Apliu Street as the Hong Kong version of Tokyo’s Akihabara. Worth a go, right? These days, Apliu Street is a fantastic mélange of its past as a flea market, and its more recent past as an electronics center. You’ll find ancient dusty remote controls, bright new LEDs, esoteric batteries and extraordinary light bulbs. You’ll see flocks of antique cameras, threads of fairy lights, coils of power drills and nests of cabling. Want an old satellite box? An ancient LCD screen? An original Gameboy? An almost certainly broken rangefinder camera? Apliu Street greets you with open arms. Welcome to paradise, boys. Bargain well.

Property

Home Hunting Moving with a Baby Dear Anne-Marie, I have recently relocated to Hong Kong because of company transfer. Currently, I’m staying in a serviced apartment in Mid-Levels, as arranged by my company. I will stay there until I find my own place. My wife is going to move to Hong Kong with our 3-month-old baby. I really like to know if there are any places in Hong Kong that are baby-friendly. I’ve just moved here only for a month, and I found that the air is much polluted in the city. It is also very crowded. I don’t have budget concerns; quiet environment and nice air are the most important factors. My colleagues suggested me to search in the New Territories. Are they correct? Anyway, here are what I’m looking for: • • • •

Around 1,000 sq ft 2-3 bedrooms Green lawn with grasses Many windows

Also, my local colleagues don’t seem to know much about day care or pre-school in Hong Kong. Are there any day-care centres within or close to the city so it’ll be easier for working parents? My wife is planning to go back to work when she has moved to Hong Kong. And, should we ship a year’s supply of baby powder from London? The news always says that Hong Kong has very limited baby powder supply. Thank you for your assistance. Well, first, congratulations on your new baby and your move to Hong Kong. Families with babies and young children live in all areas of Hong Kong. Most apartment blocks are child-friendly with playgrounds and indoor playrooms. It really boils down to personal preference, and everyone living here has an opinion on

which are the best areas to live. It is worth taking the time to have a look at a couple of properties in each area to start with so you can work it out for yourself where you would be most comfortable.

the job? What do we need to prepare before the moving company comes in? How long does it take for the shipping to Singapore? What do you suggest we do during the transition?

Yes, pollution is an issue in Hong Kong. Generally, the further out of the city you live, the better the air. For this reason, many families opt to live on the Southside, Discovery Bay, Clearwater Bay and Sai Kung. These areas are very familyoriented, with a variety of accommodation. The Southside offers more by way of apartments plus large expensive houses. Discovery Bay, a mix of both apartments and houses, Clearwater Bay and Sai Kung predominantly offer houses with gardens. Of course, you have to commute if you are living in any of these areas: 20–30-minute drive to the Southside; 20-minute ferry ride to Discovery Bay; and 30-minute to onehour drive to Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay, depending on where you actually live. There is a public transport to both the Southside and Sai Kung, but, frankly, most families in these areas have a car.

My husband and I have not yet decided whether to sell or to keep the apartment. It’s an 800-sq ft 3-bedroom unit in Hung Hom. Do you know if there are any property management companies or agencies that can help lease the apartment and manage the place as well?

The supply of baby formula has been a problem, as mentioned in a news headline recently. However, I think that to bring in a year’s supply is probably a little excessive. The local retailers, including Watsons and Manning’s, all stock formulas; you just need to ensure that you restock before you completely run out of supply.

Leasing your property would be easy, and any local agency would be able to assist. It is always a good idea to go to several agencies so as to maximise your chances of renting the property as quickly as possible.

We do not really have day-care centres in Hong Kong, as the majority of working parents would employ a full-time helper. There are play groups and kindergartens, but these are usually open only during mornings or afternoons, not all day. Generally, helpers are easy to find, and as long as you do your homework very well.

Leaving Hong Kong Dear Anne-Marie, We are relocating from Hong Kong to Singapore in May 2014. My husband’s company paid a lump sum amount for the relocation, but we’ll have to handle all the details. Can your company handle our relocation out of Hong Kong? We need to move the whole house: furniture, queen-sized bed, electronics, clothes, books and a lot more. How long does it take a moving company to do

Thank you! Thank you for your question. We do not actually relocate families out of Hong Kong; you would need to go to one of the large relocation companies. Your first step would be to approach at least three moving companies that would come and assess how much furniture you have, and then give you a quote on the packing and moving. These companies can often also assist you at the other end with your home search.

Managing it is a bit more difficult; most large management companies are not interested in taking on single properties. Again, your local agent is probably your best bet. With the sales market being so suppressed at the moment, leasing is certainly the better option. Got property related questions? Ask the expert. Your questions will be answered in this column on the 15th of every month, exclusively in The List!

Ping Nam Stream

WHY WE LIKE IT Ping Nam stream is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Hong Kong. It’s part of the Hula Skirt Falls, which get their name from the way the water sways in the wind like a hula skirt. The falls themselves are 70 feet high and very broad, so the water falls like a thin curtain over the pool below. In addition, it’s only a few minutes walk away from the Twin Falls and the Ka Lung Pool, so you get three for the price of one. Rest assured, it’s relatively 50

easy getting to Ping Nam. Though reaching other waterfalls in Hong Kong requires experience, these falls are not physically demanding, though they do require a bit of a scramble.

GETTING THERE From Fanling KCR Station, take minibus 56 and get off at Nam Chung Road. Walk along Cheng Uk village toward the dam, and then walk for about 45 minutes along the path to the right of the dam.
