Estelle & Thild Lily Micro Scrub This beautiful organic exfoliator leaves my skin really soft and radiant. I first came across it when I was visiting a friend in Stockholm; she was sweet enough to let me borrow her scrub because my face looked so dull after a few big nights outs. Nowadays, I use it once or twice a week as a pick-me-up.

iPad Air My iPad is like a second brain—I go everywhere with it. Now the iPad Air is even better with more power and functions. It’s also really thin and light that I can easily carry it in my handbag and it won’t hurt my shoulder!

Amy Malik One of the three co-founders of Glamourpods, a boutique website for indie jewelry designers, Amy Malik talks to The List about her all-time favorites finds.

Moroccanoil I have rather fine hair and it gets damaged quite easily, particularly when I am in the sun a lot. My hairdresser recommended this lovely treatment oil to me last summer and I haven’t stopped using it. Its key ingredient, Argan oil, is a powerful antioxidant and a natural UV protector, which makes my hair so much healthier.

Pierre Herme Macarons You don’t get any tastier macarons than these. The flavors are amazing; I love the Truffle Blanche & Noisette and Infiniment Rose. So glad that there are two boutiques in Hong Kong!

Serge Lutens Perfume Essie Sleek Sticks I am a big fan of nail art because it is a way to express my inner wildness without the permanence of having a tattoo! I can change the color and style anytime, so I won’t get bored. These Essie nail stickers are brilliant for traveling and emergencies, like when I decide to go to a party at the last minute.

When it comes to my scent, I prefer something a bit unusual and distinctive, which Serge Lutens creates beautifully. I particularly like Santal Majuscule: it’s woody, intense and seductive. It’s a real hidden gem, so I am unlikely to smell the same as the next lady.

Christian Louboutin Pumps I love shoes! And especially these pumps, because they are sexy and versatile. I could wear them with dresses, shirts or black skinny jeans. They are very comfy too— perfect for a busy bee like me who is always on the go.

Tried & Tested

Punch for Lunch Editor Kate Springer attempts to wash away Rugby Sevens weekend with a three-day juice cleanse, courtesy of Punch Detox. Need to Know: A homegrown Hong Kong brand, Punch Detox (www. punchdetox.com) aims to help people jump-start a healthier lifestyle. The beginners’ three-day detox includes six juices a day, packed with 8 kilograms of fruits and veggies. And for every bottle purchased, Punch Detox donates a meal through Table for Two. Day 1: I start the day with a delicious and refreshing Citrus Punch—lemon, ginger, cayenne peppers, agave nectar—this juice is lovely, but fastforward two hours and all I can think

about are dumplings, steak and sugar. After struggling through the Green Punch morning snack (celery, cucumber, kale, spirulina, green apple), the Red Punch and Fruit Punch go down eeeasy. Dinner is torture. I watch my boyfriend devour a steak, while I heat up Gazpuncho—a savory tomatobased punch with garlic, cucumbers, cayenne pepper and olive oil. But dessert is delicious: I finish the day with a yummy Nut Punch, which is packed with cashews, walnuts and coconut water. Day 2: I wake up with a really dry mouth and feel pretty empty. I weigh myself and somehow managed to drop 3 pounds overnight. Hello, motivation! The second day is way easier. Yes, there are nagging hunger

Eat Well Dish of the Day If you prefer to lose pounds the oldfashioned way, or you simply want to balance out your diet, then Hong Kong Personal Chef, aka Tom Burney and his team, can help you out. The service recently teamed up with nutritionist Paula McQuillan to launch a “Healthy Meals” lunch package (from $1,000 for five days;

20 percent off first order), which includes daily salads, fresh juices and healthy snacks—all delivered to your home or office. The pre-prepared meals are tailored to fit your personal goals and dietary needs. Don’t dig tomatoes? You got it. Gluten-free? No problem-o. Of course, if you want to book Hong Kong Personal Chef for an event, a junk or for delicious dinners—think Moroccan lamb tagine or lasagna— then you can still do that as well. www.hongkongpersonalchef.com

pangs between juices, but my violent sugar cravings have subsided. One big bummer: I decide to forgo a dinner party, which results in some seriously hangry FOMO. Day 3: I somehow shed another 2 pounds. Huzzah! I’m no longer obsessing over what I can’t have—i.e., the Krispy Kremes my colleague brought in to share—and am feeling the detox benefits that everyone talks about. I feel awake, my skin is brighter and my clothes feel roomy. Had to skip another boozy dinner, but there are always more of those, right? The Verdict? I’m a traditionalist when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, so I entered this detox with a lot of qualms. I honestly felt refreshed after three days—and a little bit proud of my selfcontrol! I’m not a complete convert, but I’d do another detox after next year’s rugby tournament weekend of mayhem.

The Big Stretch Kate Springer talks with three yoga instructors about Hong Kong’s expanding yoga scene and the exciting new classes on offer.

Melanie Anderson, left, of Yoga BamBam

Yoga BamBam

new to town A yoga instructor for 15 years, Melanie Anderson just opened Yoga BamBam in PoHo. The creative space meshes yoga with art workshops for a refreshing twist. She tells The List what to expect from the new studio. The List: Can you tell me a little about your background? Melanie Anderson: I’m British-Jamaican, but I lived in the US and Paris before moving to Hong Kong. I’ve been a yoga teacher for the last 15 years, and I practice every day. The List: What is your yoga specialty? MA: I’m teaching Acro yoga, which usually involves two people: there’s a base, who lifts the top person, and the flyer, who does yoga in the air. I teach both parts, so even if a big

14

Yoga BamBam

guy comes in, he will be a flyer. And yes, a tiny lady can be a base! It looks a bit scary, but there’s always spotter there to protect you. And if you’re not that great at balancing, your partner can help you. The List: What does the name “Yoga BamBam” mean? MA: “Bam Bam” means gathering in Jamaican, so it’s like a party. You know like a pot luck in America? Everyone brings something and you all eat together. BamBam’s concept is that all different teachers will bring their own creativity and offer fresh classes. There are plenty of traditional yoga classes in Hong Kong, so we wanted to do something different. The List: What kinds of classes will you offer? MA: We have Peaceful Warrior Yoga, which is a mixture between combat and yoga—where you start in meditation and when you hear the gong, get up and kick box for a few minutes, and then you go back into a restorative yoga pose when you hear the

gong again. It’s about training your body to go into a state of peacefulness and learn how to control your stress. The List: What are some of the classes you’re most excited about? MA: We’ll also have a Cantonese Yoga for Expats class, Acro yoga, as well as kids’ yoga, and dance for pregnant women. I’ve been pregnant twice and, believe me, you still want to dance! The List: What about the artsy side of the studio? MA: Aside from yoga classes, BamBam will also have craft workshops. I asked Esther Poon, the [yarnbombing] knitter, to come and work with us because I love what she does. We’ll have a weekly Knitfitti group, where Esther will teach everyone to crochet patterns. And at the end of a 10-week series, everyone will sew their patches together and we’ll go out and cover a tree. That’s the idea of Yoga BamBam: everyone brings something and it’s really communal.

The List: How is Yoga BamBam different from other studios? MA: Because Hong Kong is such a competitive place, yoga

A family affair Mother of two and founder of Gecko Yoga, Jenny Smith brought kids’ yoga to Hong Kong. She tells The List about the benefits of starting early. The List: Why did you start Gecko Yoga? Jenny Smith: I was practicing and studying to become a yoga teacher about six years ago. My daughter—who is now 6—and I were sitting around while I was studying anatomy, and I realized that children have innately good posture. They have loose legs, enabling them to squat with a tall spine, whereas we need chairs. But what if you grew up with yoga? Would you keep that flexibility and develop focus? There wasn’t anything for children in Hong Kong, so I traveled the world to experience as much kids’ yoga as I could, and then I opened Gecko Yoga in 2009.

can be quite intimidating here. The classes at Yoga BamBam are about welcoming and empowering the community—it’s like a Woodstock vibe. The List: How do you choose the instructors? MA: I’ve been in Hong Kong for just 10 months, but I have

been able to find amazing people who I instantly befriended. I started by finding the teachers I love, which was easy—the amount of performers in Macau is unbelievable. We were doing yoga the other day, and we had a woman who could juggle and do a Scorpion pose at the same time! The List: How does the studio’s design fit your ethos? MA: We have a deck outdoors, so we can have some “hot” yoga classes outside in the summer, or open up the doors when it’s nice out. There’s also a cafe next door, where parents can have a chat while their kids are doing yoga. Want to join in the fun? Yoga BamBam’s opening party is on May 4, and will feature a slew of craft workshops, performances and yoga sessions. RSVP: high@yogabambam.com. 28 Pound Lane, Sheung Wan, www.facebook.com/YogaBamBam

arrives, we go into baby yoga, where the babies are lifted or moved in such a way that it boosts their mobility. And then we flow into toddler yoga—you have probably seen little toddlers going into downward facing dogs—and all the way up to teen yoga. The List: What is toddler yoga like? Are the kids manageable? JS: It’s a different type of yoga, because kids are now walking

but they don’t yet follow instructions—it’s much more playful.

The List: How do your classes for kids work? JS: We focus on the life spectrum. We start on moms in pre-natal, so babies can hear moms breathing and feel them stretching. And then when the baby

15

If kids don’t get to play, roll down hills and the like, then they don’t know how to balance and won’t have body awareness. The List: What are the benefits of starting yoga at a young age? JS: Yoga is calming, develops focus and has a playfulness to it. We have a couple of little girls who started in pre-natal, and went straight through to toddler. The moms have said that yoga has given the family more ways to play together—and the kids can also entertain themselves.

The List: What about for the older kids? JS: In teen yoga, the kids start to want real stuff: they want to know how to use yoga [to help cope with] real-life situations, such as when they’re being bullied or are feeling nervous. With social media, all the likes and dislikes, the internet commenters, and just the way high schoolers are—we think it’s important to empower them to feel unique, so we say a lot of affirmations. Multiple locations, including FunZone, Shop 121, 1/F, The Westwood, 8 Belcher’s St., Kennedy Town, 6757-3152, www.geckoyoga.com

The List: How did Anahata get its start? YA: I came to Hong Kong in 2003

during SARS. People here were really stressed about their health. It was a big breakthrough for yoga in Hong Kong— but at first, it was mostly big studios, and there wasn’t much interaction between the teachers and the students. I started the studio in 2007 with an aim to provide a more tailored and personal approach.

Yoga as therapy The founder of Anahata Yoga, Yogananth Andiappan talks to The List about yoga’s health benefits, tailored programs and how to get started. The List: How long have you been practicing yoga? Yogananth Andiappan: I’m from South India, where my father runs a yoga and research college. He started when he was 15 years old and now he’s 86, still teaching and practicing yoga. I started when I was 2 years old, and basically everyone in my family is a yoga master. Plus, my name is Yogananth, so you can see how much my father was involved in yoga.

The List: What types of classes do you offer? YA: We have created classes that are tailor-made depending on the goals and needs of the student: for example slimming yoga, which is nothing but a sequence created for people who would like to achieve that goal. Then we also have de-stress yoga, which is a lot more meditative and restorative—and then we have detox yoga, which is also quite popular. It’s more twisting, squeezing, stimulating postures. The List: Do you offer private classes? YA: Yes, we have a lot of private classes, with people

coming to improve specific ailments. For example, when people are in physical rehab, yoga is a very good complement. Of course, we also teach more traditional styles which focus on posture and flexibility.

The List: How did your dad’s practice influence your studio?

The List: What are common ailments in Hong Kong?

YA: His specialty is yoga as therapy—he researched how

YA: Knee problems, because of all the stairs. It’s also

yoga helps various diseases. At Anahata, we take a more therapeutic approach. We have a Yoga Therapy series, which includes Backcare Yoga to address core strength, alignment, flexibility and coordination.

common for people to suffer from neck and back pain, and tight shoulders because people work in offices a lot. Those who fly a lot might suffer from back pain. These ailments aren’t just common in Hong Kong, but in any fast-paced city.

16

The List: Any advice for first-timers? YA: Talk to the instructors! Newcomers don’t always know the difference between Hatha yoga and Yin yoga—from outside, the postures seem similar. It’s always better if you talk to a teacher and tell them about your limitations and goals. We might recommend a slower-paced class, such as restorative yoga, for newcomers. The List: What does restorative yoga entail? YA: We start with body awareness and concentration practices.

Then we take people through breathing techniques, which help to stimulate dormant energy. Restorative yoga poses are resting postures, so even if a person is inflexible or badly coordinated, this practice is suitable.

Anahata Yoga

The List: What is one of your more unique classes? YA: We are one of the only yoga studios here to offer Golf Yoga, which focuses on the major muscles used in the game, as well as breathing techniques, swinging movement and balance. It can really open up your shoulders and back, and you’ll have a better range of motion in all sports—not just golf. 18/F, One Lyndhurst Tower, 1 Lyndhurst Terrace, 2905-1822, www.anahatayoga.com.hk

Yoga’s Eight Limbs Want to know more about the philosophy behind modern yoga? Here’s a quick summary of yoga’s “Eight Limbs,” of which there are four physical disciplines, or “limbs,” and four mental ones. Yama The moral codes that yogis live by. These include non-violence, compassion, truthfulness, moderation, and renouncing materialism. Niyama The study of yoga and observance of spiritual guidelines. Asana The practice of poses—this is the part that most people associate with yoga. Pranayama Breathing techniques to complement your meditation and asanas. There are more than 50 breathing techniques, but the most common when performing yoga is the “ocean breath” where you breathe slowly through your nose with a hissing sound. Pratyahara Controlling the mind to reject external stimuli, and drawing one’s attention inward to oneself.

Yoga for Life Run by certified yoga instructor Mindy Tagliente, Yoga for Life provides personalized yoga classes at your home or office. Whether you want to go totally private or put a regular class together with a group of friends, Yoga for Life’s eight instructors can accommodate your needs and schedule. Also offers prenatal yoga, kiddie’s yoga and corporate yoga. If you want to learn more about yoga, or make a holiday out of it, Yoga for Life also offers regular workshops and retreats.

Dharana Meditation and inward focus. Dhyana Deep meditation, where one’s concentration remains on a single object and an awareness of one’s environment and other distractions disappear. Samadhi The final limb of yoga, in which meditation leads to a higher state of consciousness and “oneness.”

Yoga for Beginners Here are 10 really basic yoga poses, aka “asanas,” which you can practice in the comfort of your own home.

Child’s Pose

Cobra Pose

Benefits: Ahh, Child’s pose. One of the most relaxing positions, particularly after a tough sequence, Child’s pose releases tension in your upper body, as well as decreases stress. Practicing this pose regularly can lengthen the spine, stretch your hips and ease knee tightness.

Benefits: An awesome stretch for opening your chest, Cobra pose tones your arms and back muscles, as well as eases tension in your back—ideal for desk drones who tend to hunch. It’s also said to be good for athletes, as it opens your hip flexors and abdomen.

Pigeon Pose

Triangle Pose

Benefits: This one is a favorite among runners, as it is the ultimate hip opener. There are variations depending on your flexibility level, but Pigeon pose is generally known for loosening up tight hips and groin muscles, relieving back tension and boosting circulation.

Benefits: Said to be great for your spine and shoulders, Triangle pose is exactly what it sounds like. Getting into this posture requires you to bend with the hips, which can feel awkward if you’re not used to it. Practice this one regularly, and you’ll likely strengthen your limbs, improve digestion and reduce back pain.

29

Mountain Pose

Cat-Cow Stretches

Warrior Poses

Benefits: One of the most fundamental asanas, Mountain pose is all about standing tall and strong. It might look easy, but be sure to engage all your muscles. This move can help relieve back pain, improve posture, firm up your butt and boost energy levels.

Benefits: An easy two-part sequence, the Cat and Cow poses are a great way to stretch out your core, particularly your spine, as well as activate your organs. The stretching pair can also help to improve your posture.

Benefits: Warrior pose has three variations, and each strengthens your arms, back and legs, while simultaneously opening your chest and hips. Like many other poses, the Warrior trio can also improve your balance and energize your body.

Tree Pose

Downward Dog

Benefits: Balance is key in this standing asana, where you bring up one of your legs in the form of a triangle. Not only does Tree pose stretch your inner thigh and groin, but it can also calm your mind and increase your mind-body awareness.

Benefits: Whether you plan to devote your life to yoga or you just want to stretch out in the morning, this basic pose is super good for you. Downward Dog can help eliminate stiffness and back pain, and boost your circulation.

Crow Pose Benefits: Yeah, we know what you’re thinking: how on earth is this a basic pose? Crow pose is not as difficult as it looks, but try it with an instructor before going solo. The Crow pose enhances focus, balance, toughens up your core and even gives your fingers a good old stretch.

Acro Yoga “Acro” yoga is a partner-based practice that draws on the power of acrobatic techniques and involves plenty of balancing poses and stretches. Really advanced instructors and practioners take on an almost uncanny ability to twist, flip and move in sync. But it’s not just for those with years of training. Anyone can practice Acro yoga—no matter your size—since classes usually include a spotter to help you keep your balance. It’s also a very popular practice to take outdoors; during the summer months it’s common to see Acro yogis practicing on the beach or in Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park. Aerial Silk Yoga Possibly one of the most popular unconventional yoga styles, anti-gravity yoga usually uses a silk or fabric hammock to support most of your weight. This allows you to attempt many impressive acrobatic poses, which would normally only be done at an advanced level. Plus, it usually ends in a very relaxing “cocoon” pose, where you’re

These days, studios offer classes that blend yoga, Pilates and tai chi principles—which can build up core strength faster than just yoga on its own. Home Hunting Loving Village House Living Dear Anne-Marie, My husband and I are living in Happy Valley, renting an 800-sq ft flat for $80K. Recently, we visited a friend of ours who is living in a village house in Sai Kung, and we loved the place. The village house has a front lawn, which allows the dogs to run around. The house is around 700 sq ft, and the lawn is around 500 sq ft. But, honestly, Sai Kung is just too far. Do we have other options where we can be close to Hong Kong Island, as we both work in Central? Also, what do we need to consider when looking for a village house? Many of them do not have a management company, so who can take care of the maintenance? Our requirements are as follows: • • • • •

Rent: $80k to $120k A small garden 1,000–1,500 sq ft Two to three bedrooms Car parks

Is that too much to ask for? Because when I search for a village house, they are all in the northern side of Hong Kong. We’ve always lived on the Island side, and we really enjoy the food and entertainment here. So, we would love to find something close to the city. I appreciate if you can give me some advice. Thank you! Living in Hong Kong is all about compromise. Residing in Sai Kung or in similar areas gives you more of an outdoor lifestyle. You tend to get more for your money in terms of space, with many houses having gardens; you’ll have a more relaxed lifestyle. The compromise is that these kinds of houses are not so convenient for work or for enjoying the city’s nightlife. Public transport in Sai Kung is good, but, frankly, you really need your own car.

The Small New House policy came into effect in 1972, when the government said that all male descendants of indigenous villagers are entitled to a plot of land to build a dwelling. Each plot is 700 sq ft and has a maximum height of three storeys, offering a maximum total area of 2,100 sq ft. Some houses have gardens that are legally owned or are on land that is on short-term tenancy from the government. These houses, known as village houses, are mostly found in the rural areas of the New Territories, so you will not find them close to the city. As you’ve said, there’s no management company for this type of houses; they are usually individually owned, and, therefore, the maintenance is up to the owner. Unfortunately, some owners are not as good as others when it comes to maintenance and upkeeping. It is always sensible to have a good look at the house before you lease it to know its condition, and don’t be shy to ask your agent as to the reputation of the landlord. Also, make sure that the tenancy agreement clearly stipulates who is responsible for repair and maintenance of the house

Lease renewal advice Dear Anne-Marie, I love your column and I really need your advice. I’ve moved from Canada to Hong Kong for a couple of years, and have been renting a 1,500-sq ft four-bedroom village house in Clearwater Bay with my husband and two kids. We are currently renting for around $90K, and our lease will be up by mid-May. Recently, our landlord called me and asked if we would like to renew our lease. However, he said he’ll increase the rent by 30% for our new lease! He said rent in Hong Kong is rising daily, and it’s reasonable to match the market value. Is this outrageous or normal in Hong Kong? Are there any rent protection regulations here? Honestly, my husband and I do not enjoy moving, especially with all the toys of our two kids! And, he said $110K is still acceptable. But, I worry that huge rental increase will become an endless nightmare that I have to deal with everytime I renew our lease. How would you suggest handling this with my landlord?

Thank you and looking forward to read your reply. Thank you, and I am pleased you enjoy my column. Sadly, the worst part of leasing in Hong Kong is that you are always at the mercy of your landlord, and there is very little protection for tenants here. There was a time when landlords could be taken to the rental tribunal if they were asking over market rates, but those days were over. Most landlords, however, do not want their tenants moving every two years, as it is of no benefit to them. They then have to renovate or, at least, paint and redo the floors. They generally have a void period of rental, and they have to pay agency fees. It is all about negotiation and knowing what the market is doing locally, so you have some comparable rentals when talking to your landlord. Over the past two years, luxury rentals have come down by 13.3% overall, with a further drop of 2.5% in 1Q14. However, Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay have seen a bit of boom with the schools opening in Sai Kung and Kowloon Bay. This meant that a bit of a micromarket has emerged in this area with rentals in 2013 going up by 3.3% and a further 0.9% in 1Q14. Based on the case above and even when potential exceptional circumstances of your home are allowed, to ask for a 30% increase over two years is way over market rates. I have to say that a $90K rent for a 1,500-sq ft village house (assuming you have one of the older style having 450-sq ft per floor) is already very high. A house with that amount of rental must be in a great location with views, garden and good renovation. I would go back to same rental and then, at a push, be prepared for a 10% increase at the maximum. Good luck! Got property related questions? Ask the expert. Your questions will be answered in this column on the 15th of every month, exclusively in The List!

Tai Tong Lychee Valley

WHY WE LIKE IT Tucked away in the Yuen Long countryside is the Tai Tong Lychee Valley. There are activities for all, but it’s most suited to families with young children. It is a great place to learn about nature and animals up-close, with English leaflets available to ensure all your questions are answered as you explore the agriculture and organic farming around the valley. Get some exercise by horse-riding in the spacious paddocks or go and feed the farm animals, such as rabbits, goats and, unusually, ostriches. There are also lake pavilions where you can stop by to feed the carp. Get munching in the strawberry field during prime season—for $100 per person, you can pick as many strawberries as you like and eat them up in the field; or for a small fee take them home for homemade jam or dessert. 50

Hideaway

If you have any room left, cook lunch at the barbecue site or have a feast at one of the Chinese restaurants. Adventurous types can tour the area on a bullock cart or get involved in the war games, but be sure to call in advance to book your place. The park is green with many fruit trees (mango, plantain, lychee and jack fruit), and calming water features, including lakes and a waterfall. And perhaps the best thing is the play-towers, rope bridges and grassy areas, where the little ones can tire themselves out before the journey home.

GETTING THERE Exit Yuen Long MTR station and take a taxi from the City Mall taxi stand for $30-$40. Admission costs $30 for ages four and above; call 2470-2201 or visit www.yl.hk/taitong for more information.
