Ladies’ Night at The Langham

The Langham has launched a brand new ladies’ night at Palm Court every Tuesday. Enlisting mixologist Antonio Lai to lend some of his cocktail magic, Palm Court is offering eight Absolut Vodka creations. Try the Yuzu Sour, made with vodka, yuzu jam, lemon juice, sugar syrup and egg white on top. Palm Court’s resident band Body Heat will be playing pop, jazz, blues and more. 7:30-9:30pm. Art Basel

Hong Kong’s number one art event rolls around once more. This year, over half of the 245 galleries attending the four-day show have exhibition spaces in Asia, meaning Basel’s bringing a ton of talent from much closer to home. New this year is the Film section in collaboration with the HK Arts Centre, which will be a three-day program with screenings of international works, as well as local projects from Kwan Sheung-chi and Christopher Doyle. Ceilidh on the Beach

Try your hand at a ceilidh (pronounced “kay-lee”)—a traditional Scottish dance party—on the beach in Shek O, with music courtesy of a live band. There’s an open bar and a buffet with a hog roast. McCafe Coffee McCafe is just as good as Starbucks. I like it decaf with skimmed milk. I have sleeping problems so I can’t have too much coffee, but I like the taste. Not a lot of places offer decaf but McD’s does!

ASOS Racer Back Tank These tank tops are inexpensive, but they’re great for summertime. They’re very airy and they’re actually quite sexy too. They’re also perfect for Hong Kong weather.

Black Lingzi Bag We name all our bags after people we’ve worked with in the past: models, bloggers, people like that. Lingzi was the first model to use the bag in our pre-launch, so it just kind of stuck.

Jolene Otremba got married at the Hong Kong Club I’m glad I saved on: The wedding venue. We ended up choosing to get married at a private club as my dad was a member, and not only was the venue intimate and perfect, but the banquet manager was absolutely amazing. We just trusted her so much that we didn’t even choose our cake, she chose it for us! Our wedding was perfect, and at a fraction of the cost of holding it at a hotel. I’m glad I spent on: Our wonderful photographer. Although it cost us almost

one-third of our entire wedding budget, the photographs are

the only thing from our wedding that I still look at a lot. It’s the one thing I will be showing to my kids and hopefully grandkids one day. I wish I’d saved on: The band. Maybe it was just our wedding, but the live

band wasn’t too popular. Most people were more interested in the open bar. I wish I’d spent on: A pre-wedding dinner or an event just for our wedding party who flew in from overseas, which was about 50 percent! We were so wrapped up in all the planning, that we felt we didn’t get a real chance to thank them and play host.

Cat Mak Got Married At Habitu Ristorante The Garden, With A Reception At The Hong Kong Yacht Club I’m glad I saved on: Flowers. We purchased all of our flowers from a wholesaler at the Mong Kok Flower Market and got everything (bride and four bridesmaids’ bouquets, plus five boutonniers) for the same price as a single bouquet at a typical florist. I’m glad I spent on: A free-flow drinks package. Since many of our wedding guests were from out of town, we didn’t want them to have to spend extra on drinks throughout the day. It was well worth it to see everyone relaxed and enjoying themselves. I wish I’d spent on: Our invites. We designed everything and printed them

through a local printer. It saved us loads of money but it was so stressful at times.

Sofia Taylor got married on Lipa Noi beach in Koh Samui I’m glad I saved on: My makeup. I decided to do my own as I think some makeup artists have a tendency to pile too much on and, as a result, I looked more like myself. I’m glad I spent on: Photography. We chose an amazing photographer who was a little pricier than most, but it paid off as we now have hundreds of beautiful photos that we’ll treasure forever. I wish I’d saved on: Shoes. I’m only 5 feet tall while my husband is 6 foot, so I bought towering four-inch wedge heels. But on the day I discovered I couldn’t actually walk in them on the beach and had to go barefoot! I wish I’d spent on: More champagne! Wine and champagne are very pricey in

Thailand, so we opted for one champagne toast and offered our guests beer and cocktails for the rest of the night. But then again, we didn’t have any complaints from guests.

Fifi Kirstein got married at St. Margaret Mary’s Church with a reception at 8th Estate Winery I’m glad I saved on: Hair and makeup. Myself and the bridesmaids helped each other out with both, and it meant we all looked like ourselves—and could do touch-ups ourselves too! I wish I’d saved on: Corkage, but honestly I would have rather we paid more and

included our special wine—we got engaged at a vineyard! I wish I’d spent on: A special lunch before the wedding for the bridesmaids and

my family. Then gotten ready and headed to the church.

Jenny Au got married at The Peninsula Hong Kong I’m glad I saved on: My traditional Chinese tea ceremony “kwa”. Despite that little bit inside me which wanted to purchase the dress, I felt that realistically I wouldn’t know what to do with it after the wedding. Hiring was the cheaper option. I’m glad I spent on: An awesome team of wedding planners. With my planners at Bliss Creations, we were able to plan our wedding without us actually being in Hong Kong and of course, on the big day, I was one relaxed and happy bride. I wish I’d saved on: Invitations. Well actually, that would be my husband’s comment not mine. Although a pricey item on our list, I loved the customized invitations which set the color theme.

Vica Chan got married at Pak Lee Café Since 1964 in Sheung Wan (now closed) I’m glad I saved on: My wedding gown. I bought three gowns on [Chinese shopping site] Taobao, and they cost about $1,500 combined. They all looked elegant, and no guest at my wedding banquet realized they were from Taobao until I told them.

Krystal Chiu got married at St. Margaret’s Church I’m glad I saved on: Banquet decorations. We decided to keep it simple and classic and I’m really glad—we were so busy that day, we didn’t even have a chance to look at it until the photos came out! I’m glad I spent on: An amazing videographer. He captured beautiful moments from all angles and produced a very sweet wedding day highlight video. My mum still watches it from time to time! I wish I’d saved on: Nothing! A great tip I would like to share with all brides-tobe is from early on in the wedding planning, spend some time in a heart-to-heart session with your fiancé. We shared our top three priorities for our wedding (mine was wedding gown, video and music!) which helped set our budget. We worked our way through the other aspects and managed to stay pretty close to our budget and expectations.

We bought fake flowers and masks for guests to take fun pictures, instead of ordinary (and boring) family group photos, where everybody stands around the couple. I wish I’d saved on: Hiring a makeup artist for my pre-wedding photos. I had the makeup artist with me the whole day, hoping for her to do touch-ups whenever necessary, but most of the time she just stood there playing with her phone.

May lynn Funnell got married at Kam Hei Garden, Sai Kung I’m glad I saved on: Everything! We did a DIY wedding as we wanted everything to be personalized and very “us” and our money went so much further—the biggest saver was the invitations. We sourced our booze from suppliers so we had too much in the end! I’m glad I spent on: A videographer. My best friend didn’t have one and she regretted being able to watch the day again as it really does go by in a blur. I wish I’d saved on: My dress. I got so caught up on the “perfect dress” that I spent a small fortune and now it’s sitting pretty in a box. I wish I’d spent on: My wedding band. I upgraded a year later. You wear it forever (hopefully) so you’ve got to love it!

Mark Naismith got married at City Hall I wish I’d spent on: A better “on-the-day” photographer/videographer. His photos were crappy compared to our pre-wedding guy. He was using a 35mm film camera. And the videographer was using a VHS camcorder to record everything—I got married in 2006, and VHS and film were already outdated then. I was pissed! Also, a better suit for myself. My wife looked gorgeous in all of her dresses... I looked like a schmuck in a cheap suit.

Kwa Most people are familiar with the traditional Chinese cheongsam, but for the wedding tea ceremony, Chinese brides wear a kwa, a bright red jacket and floor-length skirt, embroidered with lucky motifs. One common pattern is a phoenix and a dragon, which represents the bride and the groom. A good-quality kwa can be pricey, so these days many brides choose to rent, rather than purchase them. Otherwise, you may choose to borrow a kwa from a friend or family member with a long and happy marriage—the idea being that some of her good fortune may rub off on you.

Koon Nam Wah This popular shop sells kwas, cheongsams and western-style wedding dresses, though kwas remain the specialty. Chinese Wedding Cakes When wedding invitations are sent out, it is customary for the marrying couple to also give out traditional sweet pastries. Many Chinese-style bakeries around town specialize in these cakes, which come in a variety of flavors, such as lotus seed paste, mung bean, walnut and assorted nuts. They are always given in boxes of four, six or eight to symbolize pairs. However, if you only give two cakes, it means that you are not planning to invite those guests to the wedding.

Yue Hwa Chinese Products This emporium of China-made products has an entire section devoted to ready-towear cheongsams for women of all ages and sizes. Prices vary hugely depending on the material and design. Usually worn as one of several costume changes at the evening reception, the cheongsam, a traditional Chinese formal dress, can be tailored to suit just about any taste. Red is the traditional color for weddings, and most brides will choose a looser fit and a more demure side vent for a family occasion. For guests, however, the only limit is your own creativity— have fun with hemlines, sleeves, clasps and fabric—but stay away from red (unless you’re the bride), white or black (which are unlucky at Chinese weddings).

In Chinese tradition, it is considered lucky for the bride’s family to give the bride gold jewelry for when she begins her married life. Sometimes this is bought new, and sometimes it is passed down from mother or grandmother to daughter. It can be a good opporunitiy for families to show off their wealth by loading their daughter down with necklaces and bangles. The tradition, however, is as pragmatic as it is showy—if the couple falls on hard times, the wife can sell her jewelry.

Mei Wah Clothing This 80-year-old cheongsam tailor shop has a long waiting list and a stellar reputation. Proprietor Mr. Kan Hon-wing learned the craft from his father and grandfather, and specializes in demure wedding dresses, as well as formal occasion wear for older ladies. Prices start at around $3,300 for a basic gown and orders take roughly three months to complete. If you don’t speak Cantonese, it’s advisable to bring a friend to interpret.

Emphasis Jewellery It’s not exactly hard to find gold wedding jewelry in Hong Kong—all the big jewelry shops have an extensive bridal collection— but Emphasis manages to combine traditional auspicious characters and symbols with style. Attending a Chinese Wedding? Here are five insider tips for first-timers. • Don’t be surprised to see guests in jeans and sneakers. While close family members may dress up, many will just come as they are. If you’re worried about the dress code, take the venue as a clue. You can get away with smart-casual at a seafood restaurant, whereas a banquet at a five-star hotel will be more formal. • Serving oranges at the end of a banquet is a sign that it’s OK to leave. So don’t be shocked when everyone gets up and departs en masse once the citrus hits the table. • For Chinese weddings, it is customary to give cash—partly to help pay for the banquet— so leave that juicer on the department store shelf. If you’re not sure how much to give, find out the cost of the banquet per table, and divide by 12 to get a ballpark figure. If either of the marrying couple works for you, give generously. Don’t dip below $500 per guest no matter how distantly you know the couple. • Eat before you go. With all the photo-taking and ceremonies going on, you might not be served dinner until pretty late. • Forget unobtrusive photojournalism. Everyone will be expected to take a portraitstyle photo with the bride and groom as a memento of the evening. Say cheese!

Baby Food My Chinese family, god love ‘em, has been pressuring us to have a baby since before we were married. In the west, this may be considered something of an intrusion, but in Asia it’s pretty much par for the course. And growing up in a Chinese family, you generally have to develop a pretty good sense of humor. One’s weight, skin condition, dating history and dandruff is all considered totally appropriate dinnertime conversation, and so continually asking if and when one plans to have a baby is definitely fair game. So, I wasn’t too surprised when the big pregnancy nutrition discussions commenced.

For a city that’s obsessed with food, it probably won’t surprise you to learn that a lot of folk wisdom related to pregnant ladies centers around what you should and shouldn’t eat.
