Kronenbourg 1664 Pop-Up Bars

Catch the last of Kronenbourg’s popup bars around town this month— with FREE BEER! Yes, you read that right, and the event is free to enter, too. They want to bring the “cinq à sept”—or “five-to-seven”—lifestyle to town: essentially a boozy afterwork gathering. Question: why do they need to import what’s basically a happy hour? And why do they get off work so early? Oh well... It’s free beer! 5-7pm. Grand Central Bar and Grill, Shop R001, Roof, Civic Square, Elements, 1 Austin Rd. West, West Kowloon. Free entry.

Founders of Green Queen (www.greenqueen.com.hk), Sonalie GalardiEste and Tracy Turo continue to be a force in promoting healthy and sustainable options for Hongkongers. Earlier this month, they hosted Green Queen’s fourth Made in HK local artisans pop-up to great success. Featuring produce from local small businesses, the one-day market’s offerings ranged from fresh vegetables and raw chocolate bars to even bottled kombucha, as well as organic honey made right here in Hong Kong. Half of the vendors were launched in the past six months, and crowds turned up in droves to support the brand-new homegrown talents. Want to see your event featured here? McQueen Twin Skull Rings Even though they’re quite costumey, I quite like these as statement pieces. They’re just cool in general. I like the brass one because it’s already scratched up. It makes me feel edgy, and it cheers me up when I’m down.

Ray-Ban Wayfarers I have this lovely turquoise blue pair of Wayfarers from a few seasons ago. Ray-Ban sunglasses are the best: I love them and have many pairs. They’re my summer I-don’t-wanna-give-a-shit sunglasses.

My blue iPhone C is a fashion statement: I’m addicted to this turqoise—it’s even on my socks! Maybe my next spring/summer collection will feature this color.

Laneige Power Essential skin refiner light This line of products is quite good for Hong Kong weather as well as my extremely sensitive skin. I’ve used a lot of products that tend to be too heavy for the humidity, but this one is quite nice because it’s dry and fresh.

McCafe Coffee McCafe is just as good as Starbucks. I like it decaf with skimmed milk. I have sleeping problems so I can’t have too much coffee, but I like the taste. Not a lot of places offer decaf but McD’s does!

ASOS Racer Back Tank These tank tops are inexpensive, but they’re great for summertime. They’re very airy and they’re actually quite sexy too. They’re also perfect for Hong Kong weather.

Black Lingzi Bag We name all our bags after people we’ve worked with in the past: models, bloggers, people like that. Lingzi was the first model to use the bag in our pre-launch, so it just kind of stuck.

The Budgeting Bride Planning your wedding and don’t know where to splurge and where to save? Get some inspiration with the help of these real brides, who share their wedding budgeting experiences.

Photo: DM Wedding

Jolene Otremba got married at the Hong Kong Club I’m glad I saved on: The wedding venue. We ended up choosing to get married at a private club as my dad was a member, and not only was the venue intimate and perfect, but the banquet manager was absolutely amazing. We just trusted her so much that we didn’t even choose our cake, she chose it for us! Our wedding was perfect, and at a fraction of the cost of holding it at a hotel. I’m glad I spent on: Our wonderful photographer. Although it cost us almost

one-third of our entire wedding budget, the photographs are

14

the only thing from our wedding that I still look at a lot. It’s the one thing I will be showing to my kids and hopefully grandkids one day. I wish I’d saved on: The band. Maybe it was just our wedding, but the live

band wasn’t too popular. Most people were more interested in the open bar. I wish I’d spent on: A pre-wedding dinner or an event just for our wedding party who flew in from overseas, which was about 50 percent! We were so wrapped up in all the planning, that we felt we didn’t get a real chance to thank them and play host.

Cat Mak Got Married At Habitu Ristorante The Garden, With A Reception At The Hong Kong Yacht Club I’m glad I saved on: Flowers. We purchased all of our flowers from a wholesaler at the Mong Kok Flower Market and got everything (bride and four bridesmaids’ bouquets, plus five boutonniers) for the same price as a single bouquet at a typical florist. I’m glad I spent on: A free-flow drinks package. Since many of our wedding guests were from out of town, we didn’t want them to have to spend extra on drinks throughout the day. It was well worth it to see everyone relaxed and enjoying themselves. I wish I’d spent on: Our invites. We designed everything and printed them

through a local printer. It saved us loads of money but it was so stressful at times.

Photos: Seksan Manee

Sofia Taylor got married on Lipa Noi beach in Koh Samui I’m glad I saved on: My makeup. I decided to do my own as I think some makeup artists have a tendency to pile too much on and, as a result, I looked more like myself. I’m glad I spent on: Photography. We chose an amazing photographer who was a little pricier than most, but it paid off as we now have hundreds of beautiful photos that we’ll treasure forever. I wish I’d saved on: Shoes. I’m only 5 feet tall while my husband is 6 foot, so I bought towering four-inch wedge heels. But on the day I discovered I couldn’t actually walk in them on the beach and had to go barefoot! I wish I’d spent on: More champagne! Wine and champagne are very pricey in

Thailand, so we opted for one champagne toast and offered our guests beer and cocktails for the rest of the night. But then again, we didn’t have any complaints from guests.

Photo: Jon Lau

Fifi Kirstein got married at St. Margaret Mary’s Church with a reception at 8th Estate Winery I’m glad I saved on: Hair and makeup. Myself and the bridesmaids helped each other out with both, and it meant we all looked like ourselves—and could do touch-ups ourselves too! I wish I’d saved on: Corkage, but honestly I would have rather we paid more and

included our special wine—we got engaged at a vineyard! I wish I’d spent on: A special lunch before the wedding for the bridesmaids and

my family. Then gotten ready and headed to the church.

15

Jenny Au got married at The Peninsula Hong Kong I’m glad I saved on: My traditional Chinese tea ceremony “kwa”. Despite that little bit inside me which wanted to purchase the dress, I felt that realistically I wouldn’t know what to do with it after the wedding. Hiring was the cheaper option. I’m glad I spent on: An awesome team of wedding planners. With my planners at Bliss Creations, we were able to plan our wedding without us actually being in Hong Kong and of course, on the big day, I was one relaxed and happy bride. I wish I’d saved on: Invitations. Well actually, that would be my husband’s comment not mine. Although a pricey item on our list, I loved the customized invitations which set the color theme.

Vica Chan got married at Pak Lee Café Since 1964 in Sheung Wan (now closed) I’m glad I saved on: My wedding gown. I bought three gowns on [Chinese shopping site] Taobao, and they cost about $1,500 combined. They all looked elegant, and no guest at my wedding banquet realized they were from Taobao until I told them.

Photo: Derek Photography

Krystal Chiu got married at St. Margaret’s Church I’m glad I saved on: Banquet decorations. We decided to keep it simple and classic and I’m really glad—we were so busy that day, we didn’t even have a chance to look at it until the photos came out! I’m glad I spent on: An amazing videographer. He captured beautiful moments from all angles and produced a very sweet wedding day highlight video. My mum still watches it from time to time! I wish I’d saved on: Nothing! A great tip I would like to share with all brides-tobe is from early on in the wedding planning, spend some time in a heart-to-heart session with your fiancé. We shared our top three priorities for our wedding (mine was wedding gown, video and music!) which helped set our budget. We worked our way through the other aspects and managed to stay pretty close to our budget and expectations.

I’m glad I spent on: Photo : Yanko Getting little props for the v Won g guests to take photos with during the wedding banquet. We bought fake flowers and masks for guests to take fun pictures, instead of ordinary (and boring) family group photos, where everybody stands around the couple. I wish I’d saved on: Hiring a makeup artist for my pre-wedding photos. I had the makeup artist with me the whole day, hoping for her to do touch-ups whenever necessary, but most of the time she just stood there playing with her phone.

16

Photos: Iamyu Photography

May lynn Funnell got married at Kam Hei Garden, Sai Kung I’m glad I saved on: Everything! We did a DIY wedding as we wanted everything to be personalized and very “us” and our money went so much further—the biggest saver was the invitations. We sourced our booze from suppliers so we had too much in the end! I’m glad I spent on: A videographer. My best friend didn’t have one and she regretted being able to watch the day again as it really does go by in a blur. I wish I’d saved on: My dress. I got so caught up on the “perfect dress” that I spent a small fortune and now it’s sitting pretty in a box. I wish I’d spent on: My wedding band. I upgraded a year later. You wear it forever (hopefully) so you’ve got to love it!

Photo: Jeni Smith

Mark Naismith got married at City Hall I wish I’d spent on: A better “on-the-day” photographer/videographer. His photos were crappy compared to our pre-wedding guy. He was using a 35mm film camera. And the videographer was using a VHS camcorder to record everything—I got married in 2006, and VHS and film were already outdated then. I was pissed! Also, a better suit for myself. My wife looked gorgeous in all of her dresses... I looked like a schmuck in a cheap suit.

No, seriously, Auberge’s event planners will help you plan the ceremony down to every last idiosyncratic touch. Should you want to take the party indoors, there’s a 702-square-meter ballroom that can house up to 700 people for celebratory cocktails. In order to book one of these spots, you have to plan within the park’s opening hours (Tai Po is open till 11pm, while Repulse Bay Beach closes at 5pm), as well as pay a hiring fee (from $2,500 for the first four hours). Palm Beach Teepee Village

Saffron Cruises

For something a little different, you can get hitched at Palm Beach Teepee Village on Lantau Island. This scenic spot counts mountains, forests and six kilometers of beach among its photoworthy surrounds—and you can rent it out for four-hour time slots. If you want to rent the entire place, rates start at $11,300, plus a surcharge if the party lasts past 7pm. The 20,000-squarefoot lawn area comes complete with American Indian-style teepee tents, which are available for overnight stays for $620-3,600, depending on tent size.

Nothing reeks of romance quite like sailing off into the sunset. For lovesick seafarers, Saffron Cruises hosts wedding ceremonies aboard its luxury ships, while a wedding coordinator arranges a minister, flowers, photographer, the cake and a full reception.

How to:

Look Awesome in Photos Here are a few tricks of the trade to help you look glam all day and night.

Looking Good?

Your ad will too. We’ll even help you design it. For more information on advertising in The List, call us at (852) 2850 5678 38

Get a Good Night’s Sleep It’s easy to forget this, but sleep works wonders. On your wedding day, you’ll have to be up bright and early to get ready and you’ll pretty much be on your feet all day, so getting good, quality rest the night before will ensure you look your best during the day, instead of a grumpy, tired bride who’s fed up with cameras flashing in her face.

Practice Makes Perfect Everyone has a favorite angle when having photos taken. Before your big day, be sure to practice—in front of the mirror or in actual photos—to see what works best for you.

Body Tricks There are some commonly known tricks that often work well in photographs. Try standing with half your body turned away from the camera, while balancing your weight on your back foot.

Good Lighting Never underestimate the importance of good lighting on your big day. Your photographer should be able to help you with this, but the rule of thumb is to ensure the venue or location where your photos are taken is well-lit. If your budget allows, consider hiring lighting specialists.

Smile! This one goes without saying!

Chinese Wedding 101 Get hitched, Hong Kong-style

Room 202, 2/F, New Landwide Commercial Building, 73 Kimberly Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui, 2787-9708, www.lucky688.com

Wing Wah Embroidery Wing Wah Embroidery has given the traditional kwa a bit of a facelift to accommodate modern tastes. While the traditional gown is more demure, Wing Wah offers a slimmer, more figure-hugging fit. You can also pick up matching shoes, accessories, decorations and Chinese tea sets. G16, Golden Plaza, 745 Nathan Rd., Prince Mei Wah Clothing

Kwa Most people are familiar with the traditional Chinese cheongsam, but for the wedding tea ceremony, Chinese brides wear a kwa, a bright red jacket and floor-length skirt, embroidered with lucky motifs. One common pattern is a phoenix and a dragon, which represents the bride and the groom. A good-quality kwa can be pricey, so these days many brides choose to rent, rather than purchase them. Otherwise, you may choose to borrow a kwa from a friend or family member with a long and happy marriage—the idea being that some of her good fortune may rub off on you.

Golden Plaza

This wedding-themed shopping center is three stories of small stallholders offering everything you could possibly need for your wedding—Chinese or western. There are some great bargains to be had here, from laisee packets, invitation cards and gift favors, to flower girl dresses, costume jewelry, fascinators,

ostrich quill pens, ring pillows, shoes and more. It’s particularly worthwhile if you’re looking for Chinese wedding accessories, as many shops here will sell auspicious decorations, “Double Happiness” tea sets, red and gold accessories, embroidered shoes and more. There are many shops here that rent and sell kwas, cheongsams and evening dresses. 745-747 Nathan Rd., Prince Edward

Koon Nam Wah This popular shop sells kwas, cheongsams and western-style wedding dresses, though kwas remain the specialty. You can also check out the photo gallery of the male traditional dress, which is admittedly rather less elegant. Through Koon Nam Wah, you can also get an expert to choose an auspicious wedding day, or hire an on-the-day Chinese wedding coordinator— traditionally the job of an older woman—to ensure that the various customs and rites are properly carried out. G-1/F, 345 Hennessey Rd., Wan Chai, 2893-8126, www.koonnamwah.com.hk

Lucky Embroidery Established in 1973, Lucky Embroidery is one of the few shops to still specialize in hand-embroidered kwas; most modern stores have adopted machine embroidery.

Chinese Wedding Cakes When wedding invitations are sent out, it is customary for the marrying couple to also give out traditional sweet pastries. Many Chinese-style bakeries around town specialize in these cakes, which come in a variety of flavors, such as lotus seed paste, mung bean, walnut and assorted nuts. They are always given in boxes of four, six or eight to symbolize pairs. However, if you only give two cakes, it means that you are not planning to invite those guests to the wedding.

Kee Wah Bakery

This famous Chinese bakery is extremely popular for its selection of Chinese wedding cakes, which come attractively packaged in auspicious red boxes. If you’re having a western wedding but would like a Chinese touch, check out the selection of table gifts, which are individual heart-shaped wedding cakes in cute individual tins. wedding traditions, Kee Wah also has an interesting section on website that takes you through the various aspects of the ceremony. If you don’t want to lug around enormous boxes of cakes, it also offers gift vouchers for added convenience. Outlets citywide, including Shop 2, 8 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central, 2520-2029, www.keewah.com

Cheongsam

Yue Hwa Chinese Products This emporium of China-made products has an entire section devoted to ready-towear cheongsams for women of all ages and sizes. Prices vary hugely depending on the material and design. The department store also has its own in-house cheongsam sifu who can tailor-make cheongsams for you, should you want to go bespoke. 309 Nathan Rd., Jordan, 3511-2222, www.yuehwa.com

Usually worn as one of several costume changes at the evening reception, the cheongsam, a traditional Chinese formal dress, can be tailored to suit just about any taste. Red is the traditional color for weddings, and most brides will choose a looser fit and a more demure side vent for a family occasion. For guests, however, the only limit is your own creativity— have fun with hemlines, sleeves, clasps and fabric—but stay away from red (unless you’re the bride), white or black (which are unlucky at Chinese weddings).

In Chinese tradition, it is considered lucky for the bride’s family to give the bride gold jewelry for when she begins her married life. Sometimes this is bought new, and sometimes it is passed down from mother or grandmother to daughter. It can be a good opporunitiy for families to show off their wealth by loading their daughter down with necklaces and bangles. The tradition, however, is as pragmatic as it is showy—if the couple falls on hard times, the wife can sell her jewelry.

Linva Tailor

This long-standing cheongsam shop on Cochrane Street remains a popular destination for special occasion cheongsams. It also has a ready-to-wear section if you’re pushed for time. 38 Cochrane St., Central, 2544-2456.

Mei Wah Clothing This 80-year-old cheongsam tailor shop has a long waiting list and a stellar reputation. Proprietor Mr. Kan Hon-wing learned the craft from his father and grandfather, and specializes in demure wedding dresses, as well as formal occasion wear for older ladies. Prices start at around $3,300 for a basic gown and orders take roughly three months to complete. If you don’t speak Cantonese, it’s advisable to bring a friend to interpret.

Gold Jewelry

Emphasis Jewellery It’s not exactly hard to find gold wedding jewelry in Hong Kong—all the big jewelry shops have an extensive bridal collection— but Emphasis manages to combine traditional auspicious characters and symbols with style. Prices start at $3,720 for the earrings, going up to $30,300 for the ornate cloud-patterned necklace. Outlets citywide, including Shop 139, L1, Pacific Place, Admiralty, 3107-0260, www.emphasis.com.

Attending a Chinese Wedding? Here are five insider tips for first-timers. • Don’t be surprised to see guests in jeans and sneakers. While close family members may dress up, many will just come as they are. If you’re worried about the dress code, take the venue as a clue. You can get away with smart-casual at a seafood restaurant, whereas a banquet at a five-star hotel will be more formal. • Serving oranges at the end of a banquet is a sign that it’s OK to leave. So don’t be shocked when everyone gets up and departs en masse once the citrus hits the table. • For Chinese weddings, it is customary to give cash—partly to help pay for the banquet— so leave that juicer on the department store shelf. If you’re not sure how much to give, find out the cost of the banquet per table, and divide by 12 to get a ballpark figure. If either of the marrying couple works for you, give generously. Don’t dip below $500 per guest no matter how distantly you know the couple. • Eat before you go. With all the photo-taking and ceremonies going on, you might not be served dinner until pretty late. • Forget unobtrusive photojournalism. Everyone will be expected to take a portraitstyle photo with the bride and groom as a memento of the evening. Say cheese!

6 Families spend less

The end of Q1 has seen an overall decrease in luxury rentals of 2.5%. However, when we look at rentals by area and budget groups we see a very different picture. Due to the above trends we are seeing a strong leasing market in the $40K to $100K bracket. However, above that value the market is very slow, with vacancy rates rising. We are now coming into our traditionally busy period for relocations so the next couple of months will provide a strong indication as to the overall market condition for the coming year. Baby Pak Choi

A pregnancy column with Sarah Fung

Baby Food My Chinese family, god love ‘em, has been pressuring us to have a baby since before we were married. In the west, this may be considered something of an intrusion, but in Asia it’s pretty much par for the course. And growing up in a Chinese family, you generally have to develop a pretty good sense of humor. One’s weight, skin condition, dating history and dandruff is all considered totally appropriate dinnertime conversation, and so continually asking if and when one plans to have a baby is definitely fair game. So, I wasn’t too surprised when the big pregnancy nutrition discussions commenced.

to me exactly why, but I do make sure to hold back on the “cold” food when with the family. When the baby comes, you eat pork knuckle stewed in ginger and vinegar, a “heating,” nutrient-rich dish to help you replenish lost blood and energy. The advice keeps on coming. Eating collagen-rich fish maw makes your lady parts “stretchy” and helps you to have an easier labor, according to one colleague, while watermelon—though banned in the first trimester—can be eaten a month before you give birth to prevent your child from having baby acne, says a friend. For mysterious, unexplained reasons, snake and frog are also off the menu. Bummer.

Watermelon, while banned in the first trimester, can be eaten a month before you give birth to prevent your child from having baby acne.

For a city that’s obsessed with food, it probably won’t surprise you to learn that a lot of folk wisdom related to pregnant ladies centers around what you should and shouldn’t eat. For instance, my aunts used to tease me at Chinese New Year by feeding me candied lotus seeds, a food that is traditionally said to promote fertility; its Chinese pronunciation is linguistically similar to “give birth to many children.” Eek. Forget unpasteurized cheese and cold cuts. Foods that are forbidden during the first trimester include anything “cold” or “leung hei,” for instance, watermelon, banana and crab. No one has explained

50

To be honest, I’m pretty sure that no one in my family really, truly believes in all this “hot air, cold air” stuff, and what they’re really doing is showing their love, excitement and concern by clucking over me and hotly debating what I should and shouldn’t eat whenever I go for dinner.

Funny enough, my 85-year-old grandmother rarely chimes in. Instead, she quietly cooks my favorite dishes and special, nourishing broths—her dedicated, grandmotherly way of giving her first great-grandchild the best possible start in life. And I quietly—and happily—eat it all. Follow Sarah’s journey through pregnancy and parenthood at babypakchoi.tumblr.com.
