Hair Repair

For the Women of Hope charity luncheon and cocktail party, Kate Springer got to test out c M.A.C.’s makeup services at Faces in Lab Concept. Event artist John Chan b a d started with a consultation, which covered her skin’s general personality (dry overall; oily around T-zone) and coverage preference (natural with a dewy glow). He then set to work, mixing up the perfect color combos for her skin tone for a peachy summer look that could shift from day to night.

It’s easy to forget with all that summer fun, but the sun and sea are incredibly hard on hair. Sporting some frazzled ends of her own, After Before Kate Springer tried out Yerba’s Discovery smoothening treatment at the Mandarin Oriental—it’s kind of like a less-intense keratin straightening treatment, but without all the icky ingredients like formaldehyde. Instead, Ybera (that’s “E-Bear-Ah”) uses stem cells from Swiss Uttwiler-Spätlauber apples to lose the frizz and pump up the shine. After her treatment, Kate saw immediate improvements: “Unlike smoothening treatments I’ve tried before, Discovery didn’t cut out all my volume or my waves. Instead, it just made it look and feel significantly healthier.”

Mom Knows Best Newly knocked-up and don’t know where to start? How about with some advice from women who have been there, done that? We asked the members of the “Hong Kong Moms” Facebook community for their words of wisdom.

Be Prepared Prepare your birth plan after consulting with your doctor, and bring a printed copy during admission to the hospital. The nurse will keep a copy in their file, so they will know your wishes, for instance, if you want cup feeding to avoid nipple confusion, or it’s important to have your husband cut the umbilical cord. Stephanie Tong-Leong I should have downloaded those pregnancy apps [like “What to Expect”] earlier to record my weight and stuff. There’s also an app called “Collect” that helps me to organize my newborn’s pictures. Loving it! Yammi Cheng I spent so much time reading and preparing myself for the labor during pregnancy, I completely left out the reading in prep for the baby itself! Had a lot of catching up to do. Breast

14

feeding was very tough for me and I realized a little too late how important routines were. Yvonne Costello

Saving and Splurging A good baby carrier is essential in Hong Kong, and so are breathable clothes. I am using merino pajamas and a sleeping bag for our little one now, so I don’t need to set the aircon to freezing cold. Tanja Heiner Don’t get caught up in the hype of doulas, birth plans, milliondollar cribs and Einstein classes for fetuses. Keep the baby shop list simple. Eat well, sleep well and just enjoy pregnancy without looking to see what everyone else is doing. Rochelle Lewis

Try to avoid being sucked into buying too much. Think about what a “baby product” might be in real life. For instance when you think you have to buy that expensive “baby food storage tray” for the freezer, go get yourself an ice cube tray! Koko Mueller A “good-to-know” shop is Ah Chi Co (38 Eastern St., Sai Ying Pun, 2559-6730, www.ahchico.com), the most fantastic local shop that sells all the known brands for many baby items. You go there, tell them which hospital you will deliver at, and they have complete packages of items you need to bring along with you. It is also a beautiful little family business. Support them and help yourself by paying 20-30 percent less than Central baby stores. Inge Yang Every parent wants to do the baby footprints kit, especially for the first newborn, but me and hubby just could not figure out how— the mixture was wrong, baby cried when we dipped her little feet in—it was frustrating. Later on, I found that there are companies who will do it for you for about $900. They will visit your home, do it onsite, fix them on the frame for you and deliver it to you a few weeks later...I wish I knew about this service before. Helen Cheung Hoi Yan Get some pregnancy photos done! Even if you think they are cheesy, you never know if it’s your last pregnancy, and it’ll make you smile. Yes, it’s extra money spent but a lifetime of memories saved up! Sandra Lee

Advice on Breastfeeding It’s OK if your breasts don’t make enough breast milk, or none at all. Don’t stress about it; formula is OK too. A relaxed mummy is far better for the baby than a stressed one. Elise Phillipson Have a lactation consultant visit you at the hospital. Where I was, the staff in the nursery just told me to “keep trying,” as opposed to spotting any issues. Clara Chiu I wish someone had told me that it takes 1.5 hours to breastfeed a newborn. Jeez, at least I would have been prepared for the frustrations that followed! Line Luk Weismann Breastfeeding a newborn takes up a ton of time! I prepared a little bag that had my lip balm, a book, water, anything I might need, so that once feeding started I didn’t have to struggle to get something. Lizzie Hudson If you’re planning to breastfeed, consider joining a breastfeeding group. It’s reassuring to share your experiences with other moms in the same situation and realize what you are going through is perfectly normal! Check out La Leche League. Yann Wong

Don’t buy anything. If it’s your first baby, people give you everything. Babies grow fast and they will definitely grow out of most things before they’re even worn. Older babies need more stuff, so don’t waste money on a newborn. Djana Toufeili Buy diapers from pharmacies because it’s way cheaper. Wet wipes are also cheaper in a pharmacy than in any store. Sky Tao

After Baby Arrives Jamu massage [an Indonesian post-natal massage technique that helps to ease muscle aches and restore tone] is a must! Claudia Tse Ensure you have help when the baby arrives. You will be tired. You may be disoriented. Write milestones down in a notebook if you really want to remember. You will forget. At the moment your child crawls, it’s the biggest thing in your life and you know the date and time. Years later, not so much! Koko Mueller

We had a maternity nurse, and it is the best money I have ever spent. I cried when I left my son with her the first night, but I was so well rested the next day, and my son slept through the night within eight weeks. She was lovely, helped with everything regarding the baby when I needed it, and otherwise she kept to herself. I never had the exhaustion that many new mums have, but I had the time to indulge and enjoy my baby boy. She is definitely coming back for baby number two. Line Luk Weismann

Saving your Sanity

Baby Hacks

My work colleagues likely thought I was a bit nutty, but I’d bring in a small piece of ginger and smell it to ease nausea during the first trimester. And if you are in a relationship, take a babymoon away together. Enjoy your final weeks and months as a couple. Ruchika Kumar Raman

If you get a dream baby who sleeps through the night from birth, barely cries and is super-advanced, FFS stay quiet about it or you’re going to have no friends! Rachel Andrews

Top tip (maybe for when it’s a bit cooler): my newborns would feed and then as soon as I put them in their cot, they would wake up due to their startle reflex when they felt the cool sheets. Put a warm water bottle in the cot when you are feeding, and when you put the baby back in the cot Photo Credit: for a nap, remove the water Maria Z Photography bottle, check with your hand that the sheet is warm not hot, and then put the baby in. They will have warm sheets and they won’t startle back awake. Jane Waterman

Don’t rush to find a routine; the first couple of months are all about learning. Stay calm and be prepared to have hormonal emotional outbursts—it’s completely normal! Jane Waterman

Don’t buy any tops or dresses with buttons on the back until your baby can sit. Those who designed these don’t get how babies work. Hai-Anh

“The Happiest Baby On the Block”—a DVD by Harvey Karp— teaches how to swaddle properly and the “shushing” method saved our sanity at the time. Eleanor Wright

A list of baby rooms and changing facilities all over Hong Kong. This site is very useful: tiny.cc/chattybrain-thelist. Kasia D’Aquino

What is said in the night, stays in the night. Sleep deprivation, an upset baby and two tired parents lead to all sorts of issues and things said in the heat of the moment. We made a rule that whatever was said in the night was forgotten about and not referred to again—it really helped us to not resent each other. Mawgan Batt

The tram on a comfortable evening is a great way to soothe an upset baby. And 24-hour breakfast diners can be your best friend if you are up at odd hours. Christy Don Confinement nanny! Joleen Soo

Some Reassurance Don’t feel like sh*t if you can’t feel the mythical mothering instinct guiding you. It’s OK to feel like you don’t know what you are supposed to do. Claudia Tse Trust yourself! There’s no one way to raise a child. You may get knowledge from books and the Internet, you may receive tons of advice from friends and family, but ultimately everything you do must resonate and align with you. Hersha Harilela Chellaram

You are and will continue to be a terrific mother. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Trust yourself, you know what’s best. And know that it’s all worth it. Just ask your mom. Ruchika Kumar Raman

Public or Private? It’s one of the great Hong Kong pregnancy debates: should you book into a private hospital, or go with the government’s healthcare system? Hulda Thorey, director of Annerley Midwives, talks us through the pros and cons of both. The most important thing to remember is to manage your expectations. Often, birth experiences come down to the individual patient and doctor. If you are lucky, you will have a great birth and fantastic care no matter whether you decide to go through the public or the private hospital system. Be sure to educate yourself about both options so you can make an informed decision that’s based on facts, not fear.

The Public System

The Private System

The Upside

The Upside

• There’s no financial incentive to offer unnecessary treatments or interventions, meaning that C-sections, forceps and vacuum delivery rates are much lower

• Although there are more interventions in private hospitals, there is a focus on customer service

• Natural births are encouraged

• You’re usually encouraged to stay home until contractions are five minutes apart

• Staff are better trained for medical emergencies, and the hospitals are equipped to treat seriously ill babies • Most hospitals are equipped with Birth Balls and TENS machines, and will allow you to bring props from home

The Downside • Once labor is established, you will only be allowed to have one support person with you • You are told to go to the hospital as soon as you show signs of labor, rather than laboring at home • The hospitals are extremely busy, and the bedside manner may be a little brusque. Communication can also be left wanting • Epidurals are available, but not always given—it could take two to three hours to get one

• The atmosphere is more pleasant, with nice rooms and good food

• Baths and showers are available in some hospitals, although you will have to communicate ahead of time if you want to use them during labor

The Downside • As most people are paying through health insurance, doctors may be faster to use medical interventions • C-section rates reach 80 percent in some private hospitals, compared to the WHO recommendation of 15 percent • Obstetricians are busy: they take on 20 to 30 births a month, so they tend to perform quick, scheduled births If you want to learn more about the Hong Kong hospital system, Annerley runs regular free talks about care options, as well as 90-minute talks on navigating the public hospitals ($950). It also offers free information classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays to help new moms assess their care options.

This immensely popular midwives clinic offers a huge range of services for expecting moms. If you’re new to pregnancy, you might want to go for a private birth-planning class or an antenatal consultation to discuss anything that’s on your mind. It also offers 4D scans, antenatal checkups and prenatal acupuncture to ease aches and pains, and even bring on labor. It’s a great option for moms going through the public system who might want a little extra handholding. During the birth itself, you can also hire a midwife or doula to take you through the labor process. When the baby arrives, you can arrange for house calls for breastfeeding or baby care support, as well as regular workshops on childcare. Various packages are available, including a “Best of Both”—additional care for parents going through the government hospital; or even the “Platinum Care” package ($80,000) which includes personalized care and support throughout the entire process. Annerley also offers classes and workshops for everything from infant first aid to hypnobirthing and everything in between.

Keep Calm and Labor On! Birthing expert and mother-of-three, Kathy Kitzis gives her tips on how to enjoy—yes, we said enjoy—your labor.

1. Go back to school “The biggest tip is to educate yourself before you go into labor because that will dictate everything. You want to find out not how the hospital does labor, but how your body deals with birth. Unless you’re having panic attacks or are really scared, you’ll want to start classes at about 28-32 weeks as you’ll want some time to practice the breathing and the relaxing. Knowledge and understanding of how the birth works—if you get those two things then it’s going to go much more smoothly.”

2. Remember to breathe “When you’re in labor I can’t stress enough the importance of breathing and relaxing. If you do deep breathing, your body is going to go along and relax. Also think about massage techniques: there are different things your partner can do. A hip squeeze is amazing—someone putting continuous pressure against your hips gives you a feeling of containment and it’s amazing. I would say 85 percent of my clients find it really useful.

3. Try every which way

The Women’s Clinic This clinic specializes in fertility, gynecology and women’s health issues. For expecting moms, you can get comprehensive health tests for both mom and baby, as well as

26

“Find positions where you’re able to physically relax but that don’t chase labor away. Try something like sitting on a birthing ball, where you’re in an upright position, but you’re also able to let your muscles relax. On a bed, lying on your side is much better. You need to find a position that makes it

bearable while still letting the body do what it needs to do, then you’ll make the most out of the contractions.”

4. It’s mind over matter “So much of labor is mindset. It’s a toss-up between staying in the moment and looking at your end game. Try not to think about how much longer you’ve got to go, but also keep the finish line in your mind—it’s finding that balance. The way you think about birth will affect the type of birth you have. If you go in knowing what you’re doing, then you can decide to have a good time.”

5. Pick a partner “Support is crucial. Every woman at some point will go ‘I can’t do this,’ but if they have the right support around them, they’re going to get through it. So educating the husband or partner is just as important. They don’t know what they’re doing either and have bad sterotypes from movies. They don’t know they can massage the bump or coach mum to breathe. If you have the right support, you can do just about anything.“ Kathy Kitzis is a birth doula and massage therapist running regular Calmbirth classes for moms-to-be. What’s a Confinement Nanny? Traditional Chinese custom dictates new mothers undergo a month of “confinement” where they don’t leave the house and spend their time recuperating from labor and learning to look after the baby. For this period, many women will hire a “pui yuet” or “month-long companion” to help with domestic chores and baby duties. These three companies offer confinement nannies, although if you’re not a Chinese speaker, be warned that the level of English may be basic.

E-Mother E-mother offers a well-rounded “pui yuet” service—from helping to care for the baby, to looking after mom by cooking soup, and offering expert knowledge. If you’re dissatisfied with your nanny, you can opt for a more suitable candidate. A 24-hour monthlong “pui yuet” service costs around $32,000 to $35,000. Rm 13B, Wing Hing Commercial Building, 139 Wing Lok St., Sheung Wan, 3583-2543, www.e-mother.com.hk

Homeasy In operation as a “pui yuet” agency since 2001, Homeasy can help you find a nanny before or after pregnancy. Simply phone or enquire online for a list of staff for you to choose from. One common post-pregnancy

symptom is a loss of appetite, so Homeasy will make nourishing and easy-to-digest soups to help you regain your strength. Hire a 24-hour “pui yuet” service for a month from $30,000 to $40,000. 2776-2900, www.homeasy.com.hk/ maternity_service

uBaby Group With more than 400 “pui yuet” on its books, uBaby promises nervous parents that each nanny has three years’ experience, has taken care of at least 12 newborns and has been certified by a government recognized “pui yuet” course. The fee for a month-long service starts at $16,800. 6/F, Breakthrough Centre, 191 Woo Sung St., Jordan, 2111-9638, www.ubabygroup.com

A Stroll in the Park Choosing the right stroller is a headache for most new parents, especially if you have to navigate the stairs, sidewalks and public transport of Hong Kong. Lucy McLennan, marketing manager at Bumps to Babes, offers some pointers.

Fun in the Sun • Consider a stroller with a large sun canopy to protect your baby against harmful UV rays. • If you visit the beach regularly, be sure to clean the frame and wheels

32

thoroughly after each trip: the salt in seawater has a damaging effect on all metals—leading to rust or corrosion.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles • Choose a public transport-friendly pushchair that’s slim enough to navigate through crowds. Also, swivel wheels will make maneuvering a one-handed task. If you drive a car, ideally you’ll want a stroller that also works seamlessly with an infant car seat. • Travel a lot? To save time folding and stowing your stroller, choose a one-piece fold design so it’s a singlehanded task. You can also choose a compact design that fits in an

overhead compartment or in the trunk of a car.

More Tips • Make sure that the stroller is from a reputable brand and meets the latest safety regulations. • Look for a five-point safety harness or seat-belt, a good working brake, and remember—don’t overload the back with shopping bags. • Is your little one a drowsy one? Think about the different recline settings and an adjustable footrest for naptime. • Choose a stroller that enables you to add or remove items—such as a sun canopy or rain cover—as needed.

Treat Yourself Pregnancy can be hard on a mom’s body, which is why there’s no better time than when you’re expecting to ease those aches and pains with a top-notch soothing massage. And once the baby’s born, there are many treatments out there that can help to restore your figure.

During Pregnancy:

“A Mother’s Love” at the Four Seasons Spa

Providing a unique and invaluable support service throughout pregnancy, birth and beyond

T: +852 2983 1558 E: info@annerley.com.hk

A treatment put together by the Four Seasons spa director when she was expecting her second child, “A Mother’s Love” addresses all those pregnancy related aches and pains while simultaneously lavishing mom with the pampering she deserves. A sea salt and honey scrub softens and deeply moisturizes the skin, and also helps to combat stretch marks and soothe itchiness. Once you’re rinsed off, it’s time for a deeply relaxing and restorative massage, where the therapist will expertly ease out those kinks and knots associated with prolonged sleeping in one position, your change in body alignment—and of course, carrying all that extra weight! If you prefer a firm touch, you can really ease those long-held tensions, but if you’re up for something gentler and more relaxing, you can opt for that too. An extra bonus: there’s a special V-shaped pillow that allows mom to lie face-down—

something you don’t appreciate until you can’t do it anymore! After the back massage, a cooling aloe vera leg wrap is applied in order to soothe heavy legs and reduce water retention. It’s chilly but a welcome respite when your legs are aching and sore. From $2,300. 6/F, The Four Seasons Hotel, 8 Finance St., Central, 3196-8888.

After Pregnancy:

Jamu Massage and Abdominal Binding at Restoring Mums There are plenty of treatments available to help you heal after delivery, as well as help you on your way back to your pre-pregnancy figure. At Restoring Mums, practitioner Karen Loke specializes in post-natal Malaysian Jamu massage and abdominal binding, which she developed an interest in after having the treatment following the birth of her second child. The two treatments, which are performed together in your home, feature traditional herbs such as kaffir lime, lemongrass, cumin, nutmeg, cinnamon and turmeric, which are said to heal, detoxify and “warm up” the body. The abdominal binding portion involves wrapping the stomach in cotton strips from pelvis to breastbone. It’s worn for at least six hours to help flatten the stomach; it is recommended that you do the treatment for at least five consecutive days, though 10- and 15-day packages are also available. For best results, this treatment should be performed within eight weeks of delivery.

One legend has it that the history of tailoring in China dates back to a 19th century shipwreck. In the early 1800s, a tailor by the name of Zhang Shangyi was aboard a boat that sunk off the coast of Japan. He turned his hand to making clothes for the foreign traders and sailors of Japan. He soon became a celebrity in his adopted country for his mastery of western suiting. Years later, either he or his son later returned to Ningbo to set up China’s first European-style tailor. Ningbo tailors flooded into Shanghai alongside foreign trade, guaranteeing that the British trader could still get a half-decent suit, halfway around the world. Apprenticeships were set up and in no time at all the tailors of Shanghai were producing rivals to anything that Savile Row could produce—at a fraction of the cost. The tailors who rose to prominence became known as the hongbang caifeng, the “Red Group” or “Red Gang” tailors, who sewed Western, Japanese, Russian and

Chinese tailoring traditions into a whole. Why “Red Gang”? Stories are mixed. It’s either because these tailors were taught their trade by red-haired, blue-eyed westerners: or because those same ginger-topped foreigners were their main clients. Either way, Shanghai tailoring boomed during the city’s first flowering, in the early years of the Republic of China. Dissatisfied with the Manchu-influenced changshan which had become Chinese national dress, “Father of the Nation” Sun Yat-sen approached the tailors of Shanghai to commission a new style that would reflect the modern reality of the Republic, and disassociate it from the Manchu overlords of the past. The high-buttoning multipocketed suit became known as the “Zhongshan suit”: a blend of Eastern and Western styles that you might know better as the “Mao suit.” Ironic, then, that the Red Gang would be chased out of China by the Red Guard. After the Cultural Revolution rolled around, Western styles fell out of favor. Shanghainese tailors and artisans fled to somewhere more welcoming of their skills: Hong Kong. With its colonial history and its expatriates desperate for a touch of fine tailoring, there was more than enough business to go around. W.W. Chan, probably the city’s best tailor, claims direct lineage to the Red Gang. Ascot Chang is proudly Shanghainese, as are H. Baroman, Gordon Yao, A-Man Hing Cheong—a checklist of the city’s great tailors. So we have a shipwreck, a Red Gang and a Red Guard to thank for Hong Kong’s tailors. As far as happy accidents go, that’s cutting it fine.

Property Congratulations on your new baby. Living in Hong Kong is all about compromise, should I trade space for proximity to work or schools? Convenience versus rental?

Home Hunting Question 1 Dear Anne-Marie, I like reading your column and I hope you can give me some advice on this. My husband and I have been renting an apartment in Discovery Bay for 4 years. We have two kids and a new-born baby. My current apartment has 3 bedrooms but since we have a baby, I think it is time for us to have a bigger place. I love living in Discovery Bay and I enjoy my neighbourhood very much. However, our focus now is on our kids and I want a better school for them. I have been searching a few schools in Kowloon Tong and Hong Kong Island and looking to rent a new place. I wonder if you can give me some advice on choosing a 4-bedroom apartment with a car park, and more importantly, with a good school network. And since I quitted my current job to take care of my kids, I actually need a more sensible rental. I thought about a village house which you talked about in previous article, but it is just too far from work for my husband. Therefore, I seek for your advice on below requirements: • • • •

Kowloon Tong or Central area 4-5 bedrooms 1,500 sq ft Car park

Our budget is around $60K – $80K. Thank you! And I look forward to your reply.

Certainly a village house in Sai Kung or Clearwater Bay would tick the space and rental requirement, but quite frankly Kowloon Tong is a good option for schools. Central, i.e. Mid-levels, means you are likely to be in a high-rise which will offer you a very different living experience. I would however offer convenience to work (if your husband is in Central) and schools. If you love Discovery Bay and have an established lifestyle and a network of friends then maybe you can consider staying and finding a larger house there. You have the choice of international schools in Discovery Bay and many of the schools on the Island have buses for pick-up from the Discovery Bay Ferry Terminal.

Question 2 Dear Anne-Marie, I hope you are well! I have been reading your column since this year and I find it very helpful. And I hope that you can give me some advice. My boyfriend and I are planning to move in together and rent a place in Sheung Wan or Mid-levels, which is close to our workplace in Central. We enjoy the entertainment and environment here very much. However, there is a big concern when are finding a new place - we both have pets. I have two dogs and he has three cats and one dog. We need a bigger place for sure. We have been checking a few agencies but we find that not many apartments are pet-friendly and have the requirements that we look for. We thought about moving to a village

house but it is just too far away while we don’t own a car. Would you please give me some suggestions? We need a place of about 800–1,000 sq ft, pet friendly and newly refurbished. Our budget is about $60K–$70K per month. Thank you! Thank you for your note. Sadly there are lots of landlords who are not pet friendly. Large corporate landlords can be much more open to pets but there are no corporate buildings in Sheung Wan. Individual landlords can sometimes be persuaded with extra pet deposits so I would definitely recommend trying that tactic. Village houses, as you mention, are in more remote locations so not having a car would make living that far difficult. Have you thought about Pok Fu Lam as an area? It is only about 15 minutes to Central proper and will offer you great access to walks for your dogs! Please feel free to contact me and I can connect you with one of my consultants who could show you some properties that would fit your needs.

Got property related questions? Ask the expert. Your questions will be answered in this column on the 15th of every month, exclusively in The List!

Baby Pak Choi

A pregnancy column with Sarah Fung

Thanks, Hong Kong! Hongkongers get a bad rap for being uncaring towards pregnant women. But honestly, barring a couple of moments on the MTR when the entire carriage has been looking down at their phones playing Candy Crush, everyone—from helpers to housewives, construction workers to mainland tourists—has been really nice. And ladies—if you’re dressed in such a way that your pregnancy might not be obvious to the casual observer, give your fellow commuters a break. There’s nothing more mortifying than offering your seat to a pregnant woman, and then finding out that no, she’s not pregnant, just a bit fat. So to redress the karmic balance, here’s a shout-out to just a few of the people who have shown me and my bump some kindness over the past few months.

• Speaking of foot massages, all the sifus (there have been quite a few) who have taken extra care to give some of the best massages I’ve ever had. Seriously, if you want a good foot massage, tell them you’re having a baby.

There’s nothing more mortifying than offering your seat to a pregnant woman, and then finding out that no, she’s not pregnant, just a bit fat.

• The two see lais who offered me a seat, and —presumably not knowing I could understand them —good-naturedly laughed about whether they could pass for being pregnant in order to score a seat. They concluded that they had the bellies, but were too old. • The man who didn’t have a seat to give, so offered me his pole on the bus. That sounds way more sketchy than I intended. • The lady in the foot massage place who bustled around turning off the aircon because it was “too cold for the pregnant lady.” It really wasn’t, but I appreciated the sentiment.

The security guards in my building who rush to get the door, tell me on a daily basis to walk slowly, and literally escort me to my flat when it’s raining. You are ancient and tiny and if I fell on you I would probably kill you, but you’re very kind.

The people who are tangentially in my life—the guy who made my wedding cheongsam, the waiter at my regular hotpot restaurant —who offered huge smiles with their joyful, heartfelt congratulations. I don’t know your name and you don’t know mine, but you are awesome! • Oh—and I owe an apology to the ladies who I thought were trying to intercept my cab on a hot and humid day last week. I was staring daggers and dreaming up a string of abuse to hurl at you, when a taxi came by and you directed the driver to go pick me up first. Faith in humanity restored, with a side-helping of shame.
