Your guide to looking fit and fabulous

Tried & Tested

The New Fit By now, you’ve probably heard about Bikini Fit. But what’s the big deal? The List’s Kate Springer laces up her sneakers to check it out for a week. The gist: Founded by tough-stuff personal trainer Alex de Fina, Bikini Fit is out to promote healthy bodies and long-term lifestyle changes. The workout is womenonly and, no, you don’t have to be ripped to join—the boot camp-style workouts focus on individual goals. Aside from training six days a week, there are also one-on-one personal consultations, nutrition workshops and Facebook support groups. Mon: Ten minutes into the first workout—a mix of squats, kettlebell lifts, rope throws, push-ups and running—and I was already soaked with sweat and moaning several “Oh, dear gods” under my breath. Tue: Yoga. Yessss. Stiff and sore from Monday, yoga felt amazing. Wed: A message on Facebook says to bring mats again. More yoga, I hope, but nope—it’s 45 minutes of exhausting

ab work, most of which I couldn’t get through. It was a little embarrassing, but made me realize how much I neglect my core in my usual routine. Thu: I rolled up with aching arms and cement legs and didn’t think I could move, but it’s amazing what a little motivation and group energy can do—think stair sprints, TRX jumps, sandbag lunges, kettle bells and more than a fair amount of squats. Fri: I can hardly walk from yesterday, but luckily today is all about the arms. We did this routine dubbed the “Dirty 30s”—you try to do 30 reps at six different stations—and it was intense. But, because you’re so busy sweating, time flies by and you’re done before you know it. Sat: Boxing day! A favorite of mine, as the drills are really fun and it’s a little more laid-back. Plus, a few rounds of punches and you feel a whole lot less guilty about whatever else the weekend brings. The verdict: Bikini Fit is for women who seriously want to get in shape—but don’t confuse that with “get skinny.” Of course, with this much exercise you’ll lose weight, but the program focuses on strength and lasting lifestyle changes. Yes, it’s vigorous, but I walked away from every workout feeling fantastic. Bikini Fit holds sessions in Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park, Hong Kong Park, as well as a newly launched series in Kowloon Park. From $795 per week

Hot Product Summer Strands Looking for a de-frizz cream that actually works? Enter the “Summer Hair” line from Frédéric Fekkai. These bright orange tubes are packed with glossy, fresh-scented creams that protect against the sun, frizz, color-fading, chlorine, humidity and salt. In short: the range was made for a Hong Kong summer. The List tried the After Sun Daily Mask ($380) for detangling and UV protection, as well as the Smooth Sailing Anti-Frizz Cream ($320), which had a cool tingly feeling and kept parched hair manageable even on the dog days. Basically, lice are tiny little insects— parasites actually—that spread through human contact and sharing infected objects: hence why early school years are the most likely time kids will catch lice. Make sure they head to kindergarten prepared: ask them to avoid head-to-head contact, and beg them keep their hairclips and hats to themselves during playtime. What should I look for? Is your child coming home with a scratchy scalp? Red bumps on their neck or shoulders? Complaining of a “tickling” feeling? Sorry, sister, but there’s a good chance your little one has got the bug. How do you know it’s lice and not another skin condition? You can see a doctor for a proper diagnosis and prescription shampoos, but lice are usually pretty easy to determine at home. Check by examining the scalp under a light: If you see small white eggs, aka “nits”

Oh no! My kid has lice! Any chance I can avoid them? Sure, there’s a sliver of hope, but head lice are extremely contagious. For a fighting change: avoid cuddling (sorry!), wash clothes frequently, vacuum the flat incessantly, and stay clear from sharing brushes or hats. Ugh, my home is officially infested. Now what?

Ten Design Stationery Utility and comfort are the two watchwords for this local stationery brand, which has won multiple international design awards, including the Good Design Award in 2010—for “Origin”—a pen that emphasizes the comfort of the writer. Other products of note: the “Balance” is a combination of a digital stylus and a ballpoint pen, while the “Silicone Bookmark” doubles as a pen holder. Although the brand does not have its own store, their innovations can be found at various outlets, including Page One. Check out the brand’s designs and retail locations on its website.

on the hair follicle… all signs point to lice.

Don’t panic. Yes, the pesky little things are infuriatingly difficult to clear out, but many a generation has managed thus far. So here’s what to do: • First things first: keep kids out of school if they have lice! Sounds like a no-brainer but remember that what goes around, comes around. And you don’t want a reinfection! • Pick up some over-the-counter lice shampoo and lotion from Watson’s Pharmacy. • If using hair lotion, you’ll slather it on before going to sleep, then comb out bugs and eggs in the morning. • Soak every pillow case, linen, piece of clothing and comb—and anything else porous enough for a little lice family to live on—in boiling water for 20 minutes. • Vacuum your entire flat—including furniture—and cover it all with a plastic cloth to suffocate the little buggers. • Still infested? Repeat again the following week... or go ahead and see a doctor for some prescribed meds. Source: www.drugoffice.gov.hk

Tips from a Teacher Paul Thompson, an art teacher at the King George V School, shares his tips on preparing children for the school year and how to handle common problems they may face. The List: What are the most common issues for students adjusting to being back at school? Paul Thompson: The main concern that teachers have is that students aren’t getting enough sleep. In order to learn effectively, the brain must be adequately rested. Fatigue can lead to students not wanting to put in the effort or forgetting materials for lessons. As they adjust to a new timetable, this can be frustrating. The List: How should parents tackle these problems? PT: At least a week before the new

British Tutors

Mr. Thompson’s 5 tips on dealing with that first exciting—and terrifying—day of high school: • Secondary school means all kinds of big adjustments: help your kid get the easy stuff right, by ensuring they have a copy of their schedule. • If your tween has a friend at the same school, take them to school together on the first day to ease their nerves. • Make sure they arrive on time, with a practice run on public transport or by car. Just be sure to add in time for extra traffic.

term, students should be going to bed and waking up as if it’s a normal school day. This might help eliminate “holiday jetlag.” The List: How do you get students out of the holiday rut? PT: I often set short, quick tasks that have a variety of different activities. Some may be discussion-based whereas others may be visual, and some verbal. It is also effective to have fun group activities that can encourage students to interact with each other. The List: How do you warm up students for the year ahead? PT: After a long holiday a lot of students—and staff!—find it difficult to get back into the routine of learning. Most teachers begin the first week slowly and do not give any intensive work while students readjust. The start of the year is crucial in engaging the learners, and to build an effective learning partnership between the students and teachers.

• It sounds obvious, but parents should encourage kids to set up a locker, and lock up heavy books between lessons. • Most students have mobile phones: make sure that your child can reach you, but only if really necessary. It is better that they seek advice from teachers who are prepared and looking to help out new students.

Jurassic Garage Established and run by animal lovers, Jurassic Garage has a fixation with animals that creep, crawl and slither. Book them for your party and the kids will get up close and personal with lizards, snakes, turtles and bugs—all safely supervised by professional animal handlers, of course. All animal encounters are conducted in English, with an option for Spanish or French available upon request. You can even add on an insect life-cycle kit as a take-home party favor— although we wonder if the other parents will thank you. Animal encounters can take place either at the Jurassic Garage

Dread the thought of your children making a mess at home? Bring in the experts and allow the little ones to run riot with all things squidgy and sticky. Qualified preschool teacher Adele English established Messy Play to promote “messy, sensory and exploratory” games that benefit children’s hand-eye coordination, social skills and more. Messy Play offers party entertainment in its studio in Discovery Bay or a venue of your choice. Kids younger than 7 years old are welcome, and sessions run for roughly an hourand-a-half. Price is $200 per child and includes set-up, on-site staff and cleaning (yep—there’s a lot of cleaning). 6688-6984, www.messyplayhk.com

Science Explorer Why is fire hot? How do planes fly? It can be tricky satisfying the incessant questions of curious kids. Science Explorer focuses on science shows and fun experiment sessions for children to help foster a love of learning while having fun at the same time. You can choose among three 30-minute shows— Exploring Ice and Fire, Exploring Crazy Science, and Visible and Invisible. Lab sessions last one hour and six topics are available for you to choose from. This interactive option allows kids to make their own ice cream, build a plane and even make it snow on a summer day in Hong Kong. 16E, International Industrial Center., 2-8 Kwei Tei St., Fo Tan, 2882-7915, www.teg.com.hk

I look forward to the school activities. There are a wide range of activities that I can choose from. I was in the swimming team and basketball team and I tried trampoline last year.

I look forward to meeting Mr. Leung, my English teacher, because he’s funny and cute. Whenever he says something wrong, he sticks out his tongue. That makes me laugh.

Home Hunting Island or Kowloon? Dear Anne-Marie, I am moving to HK permanently at the end of August with my husband. We are going to stay in serviced apartments for the first few weeks but I hope to find a place for us to move into asap. We are also flexible on the location. My husband will start working in Central but he will be eventually based in Macau working for one of the casinos. We prefer to live in HK than Macau. And we start looking to rent somewhere convenient for my husband to commute to work. It seems we don't have many choices but Central/Sheung Wan area or Tsim Sha Tsui. What are the main differences between these two areas? I have been told that with the same budget I can actually get a better quality place in Kowloon than the Island side. Do you have other recommendations? My budget is around 60K per month. I would like to have a newly-renovated and nice interior, 700-800 sq ft place, preferably with some outside space and car park. Can you recommend any good places I could start looking? I have been told that relocation agents can be really helpful. I'd appreciate any help at all on this! Thanks! It sounds like an exciting time for you. You are right, with your husband going to be based in Macau later on, it seems wise that Central is an ideal location for you. The Mid-Levels in Central offers a convenient location with many high-rise apartments to choose from and is only about a 10-minute walk to Central which would make your husband’s commute

Located opposite the island is Tsim Sha Tsui which offers a more tourist friendly area which ultimately, is Hong Kong’s main retail destination. However, I would advise that if you are not used to living in an area with plenty of tourists, Tsim Sha Tsui can be very populated with them. My suggestion would be if you like that side of the island, apartments in Kowloon Station can offer you some modern high rises with contemporary interior that will suit your taste. Equally it is within your budget and size that you are looking for. I highly recommend using an agent as their experience and expertise will help you when relocating. In HK, an agent’s fee is typically 50% of one month’s rental. As part of our service here at JLL, we will help you find a serviced apartment at no extra charge. I have a great team and would love to connect you with an agent.

Moving to HK with Kids Dear Anne-Marie, I recently moved to HK from Australia. My husband and my two sons - the eldest being 6 and the youngest 3, will arrive in 3 months. I am wondering if you can give me some ideas of what my husband should ask his employer for as a housing allowance. I don’t have any ideas about renting costs and the best areas to live in with two children. I would like to live in an area which has expat families easier for us to make friends. Which are the most popular places? I heard that Sai Kung Clearwater Bay is nice. But what international schools service the area provides (I assume ESF is out there and I know one of the private ESF schools is there)? What is rent like vs size? What is the makeup of the population? I heard a lot of expat Australians live in Clearwater Bay. The place looks pretty green on the map so I am guessing most places out

there are not high rises but houses/ small apartments. Any advice on locations and rentals would be greatly appreciated. Congratulations on your move. Yes, Sai Kung is mainly made up of village houses that typically stand at 2,100 sq ft over three floors. There is a mix of villages, some more local than others. Indeed, Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay are popular amongst families; it offers a tranquil setting but it is advised that you need a car. Discovery Bay is also a very popular place for expat families. There are also a number of international schools based there. Hong Kong Academy in Sai Kung has just opened; as well there is the ESF Clearwater Bay School. As part of our home search service, Gill Keefe – gill.keefe@ap.jll.com is our in-house relocation consultant who specialises in international schooling. She works with families moving to Hong Kong and has a wealth of knowledge on international schools in Hong Kong, possible places to situate your children and what these schools are looking for. We would be happy to help you and show you some properties as well as give advice on schooling that would fit your requirements. Rentals can vary from HK$40K all the way up to HK$150K. Best way forward is to work out how much you can afford to pay in rental and then get out and about with your agent and look at what your money gets you. We would love to help you see properties! Baby Pak Choi

A pregnancy column with Sarah Fung

Baby Milestones

There was a rash of summer babies among my friends this year, and each time one of them goes into labour, produces a baby and proudly announces it on Facebook, I’m reminded that the time is ticking down until my own D-Day.

my order in for a few packs as I think they make awesome gifts for new mums.

It got me to thinking—what other milestones are they missing that deserve to be commemorated with a placard and a photo? If for no It got me to thinking—what other reason, of course, than to tease the Baby Pak Choi in other milestones deserve 15 years’ time.
