Ahh, Spa…

It’s so easy to get caught up in Hong Kong’s frenetic pace, but sometimes you need to carve out an uninterrupted sliver of time that’s all about you. So whether you check in for an indulgent staycation (p.14), plop down for a mani-pedi (p.26), or scoop up some chocolate cake (p.30), try to treat yourself more than once in an autumn moon! For a little bit of everything, we have shortlisted our favorite day spas (p.20) to keep you feeling fresh. But of course, what’s a Hong Kong pampering guide without a round-up of foot massage parlors (p.34) to help you release and relax? And for those extra-special occasions, check out the party pampering specialists on p.38, who will primp and pamper you to perfection. Go on, you deserve it!

Beijing Bohème

Through Oct 5

A Mid-Autumn Feast

Pop-up Productions brings an English adaptation of Puccini’s “La Bohème” to the kooky and glamorous House of Siren stage. The original opera was about a group of bohemians living in the Latin Quarter of Paris, but in the “Beijing Bohème” revamp, director Natalya Zeman brings the action to contemporary China. The story is about four arts graduates knocking around Beijing and finding love, lust, death... and no job offers at all.

Mooncake season is upon us. Surely the prettiest of all the annual festivals, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a peaceful event that involves getting together with friends and family in the great outdoors to watch the full moon rise. Parks, beaches, mountaintops and just about every open space in Hong Kong become fairylands of lanterns, both traditional and modern. In particular, check out the lantern displays at the Cultural Centre and Victoria Park.

8pm. House of Siren, (entrance on Castle Steps), 64 Robinson Rd., Mid-Levels, 6718-7079. $195-495 from beijingboheme.ticketflap.com.

Aug 28-Oct 5, Piazza, Cultural Centre, 10 Salisbury Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui. Sep 5-14, Victoria Park, Causeway Bay.

Laugh-a-Minute September’s going to be one funny month, as the annual International Comedy Festival returns to Hong Kong for its eighth year. It brings with it a packed program of international pros, local favorites, as well as three nights of preliminary rounds of the HK International English Comedy Competition (Sep 25-27). It all culminates in the finals held at KITEC, where you’ll see the best of this year’s comedy gold. South Africa’s top comedian Barry Hilton (Sep 4-7) kicks off the month, followed by shows by other big names each weekend: ventriloquist Michael Harrison (Sep 18-21) and Tom Cotter (Oct 2-3). TakeOut Comedy, B/F, 34 Elgin St., Central, 6220-4436. $150-250 from www.takeoutcomedy.com; finals tickets from www.hkticketing.com. Visit www. hkcomedyfestival.com for full schedule.

Traveling charity exhibition Elephant Parade recently arrived in Hong Kong, promoting Asian elephant conservation. Over 100 life-size (that’s 5-foot-tall) baby elephant sculptures are on display at Pacific Place, Cityplaza and Citygate Outlets. Each is handpainted by a renowned designer, artist, brand or celebrity, including artist Diana Francis whose signature Hong Kong elephant is titled “Pearl of the Orient”. Twenty elephants will be auctioned off at the end of the parade on September 11, with proceeds going to the Asian Elephant Foundation. Through Sep 9. Three locations, including Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty. Visit www.elephantparade.hk for more info.

A dose of Hong Kong style Hot Product

Eye-catching Specs

Check out one of the latest additions to the hip PMQ center—Smith Norbu. These craftsmasters are clever indeed: they handmake high-quality, bespoke eyewear using natural yak horn. Belgian designer and entrepreneur Benoît Ams dreamt up his designs while traveling in Tibet and has brought his vision of traditional eyewear to trendy Hong Kong. Once you’ve chosen the frames to match your face, they’ll go through an extensive 50-step process, finishing with a hand polish. The final product arrives in a leather case and a signature yellow box. A treat for the eyes, so to speak. S404, PMQ, 35 Aberdeen St., Central, 2541-8118, www.smith-norbu.com

New Shop Here are products that the men—and the ladies—can enjoy: popular French brand Le Slip Francais (which translates quite simply to “The French Underwear”) brings its hot range of men’s undergarments to Hong Kong. The concept of the pure made-in-France collection was thought up by young designer Guillaume Gibault in a Parisian café (naturally) in 2011, and was rolled out just a few months later to rave reviews. And we can see why—the playful yet sophisticated briefs, boxers, swimwear and accessories are certainly eye-catching. Or maybe that’s just the models. Staycation Nation

Whether you’re after a relaxing escape or a hipster holiday, you can enjoy all the makings of a getaway without even leaving Hong Kong.

Maybe you’ve finally gotten those kids off to school, you’ve been working late, or this summer has just been too hectic—it’s always a good time to refresh with a spa-cation.

Where to Stay For timeless luxury and superlative service, the Mandarin Oriental is a no-brainer. For starters, it’s one of Hong Kong’s first luxury hotels, opening back in 1963, and the bar has been held high since then. Aside from harbor views and an elegant old-world feel, the MO also has a reputation as one of the best spa sanctuaries in town. Indeed, the Mandarin Barber, Mandarin Salon and Mandarin Spa create the ultimate beauty trifecta—all with a loyal following. So book in, and kick back.

Spa Suite

Rooms from $4,600. 5 Connaught Rd., Central, 2522-0111, www.mandarinoriental.com

Time to Unwind The Mandarin Spa has recently had a little facelift, so there’s a new couples’ “Patchouli” suite with a saucy steam shower, a Thai massage room that comes with a custom-made Thai bed, and updated details throughout the spa.

If you’re here on a romantic staycation, ask about the two-hour “Time Together” couples’ experience that is tailored to your needs (from $3,800). Flying solo? Try the Oriental Essence treatment, which is 1.5 hours of pure bliss (from $1,100). This signature treatment irons out stress-points—paying special attention to the neck and shoulders—using the Mandarin’s own ginger and frankincense oil.

Eats & Treats Start the day off fresh at airy Café Causette—the homemade granola and greek yogurt is a must-try, and the fluffy pastries are worth the indulgence. For dinner, you can’t go wrong with English bites at The Chinnery. Among the most popular

dishes are the chicken tikka, and the steak and ale pie—plus the whisky selection is unbelievable, with over 109 varieties. Not a whisky fan? Zoom up to the M Bar, where views and innovative cocktails await.

Out & About While you’re in the area, get some fresh air with a stroll around the New Central Harbourfront, which is just across the street. The spacious green lawns add a sense of nature to the otherwise cement surrounds. Keep on with the all-natural offerings with a visit to Hong Kong Park’s Edward Youde Aviary, which has a rainforest feel that’s home to more than 80 species of birds. There are free guided tours every Wednesday.

F

amily Fun

Sure, a romantic retreat is easy to plan, but what if you’ve got nippers in tow? Here’s a staycation itinerary that has something for the whole family.

Where to Stay Located in the New Territories, the Hyatt Regency Sha Tin combines mountain and sea views, making for a relaxing countryside retreat. With a big pool, bicycles for hire and even mini spa treatments for kids at the Melo Spa, there are plenty of family-friendly activities. And if you want to ditch the little blighters? The Camp Hyatt kids’ club will keep them entertained: you can sign them up from 9:30am to 6pm for $800, which includes two kids’ meals—be sure to book at least three days in advance. The ongoing “Explore” package (from $1,810 per night) on weekends and public holidays includes accommodation for four guests (one must be aged under 3), buffet breakfast, two-hour bike rental along the Tolo Harbour, afternoon tea buffet and late checkout.

Hyatt Regency Sha Tin’s Presidential Suite

18 Chak Cheung St., Sha Tin, 3723-1234, hongkong.shatin.hyatt.com

Eats & Treats Kids love buffets, and the casual, all-day dining at The Café will satisfy even the pickiest of eaters—particularly the decadent dessert station, which is piled high with sweet treats. If you can’t quite face the bun fight (it’s usually packed on weekends), Sha Tin 18 serves top-notch Chinese cuisine from dramatic show kitchens. Don’t forget to order the famous Peking duck in advance. Venturing outside, Chun Chun Restaurant (Outdoor Food Market, Shan Mei St., Fo Tan, 2691-2660) is an open-air dai pai dong that’s famous for its crispy roasted pigeon. Kids will love the fold-down tables and friendly chaos. Besides the pigeon, don’t miss the black bean clams and garlic fried prawns.

Out & About Situated by Plover Cove Reservoir, the picturesque Tai Mei Tuk in Tai Po is a popular destination for Hong Kong families. There are scenic spots for fishing, cycling, picnics, barbecues, hiring row boats and more. The Pat Sin Leng mountain range is a challenging hike, or you can kick back with a beer at one of the area’s famous Thai restaurants. Get there: Take the 20C minibus from Tai Po Market Station, or rent bikes from the hotel and cycle to Tai Mei Tuk ($130 for three hours)

Eats & Treats

The Southside isn’t just about a day at the beach—the former industrial area of Wong Chuk Hang is now a funky artists’ hangout that’s perfect for a weekend away.

Where to Stay One of the city’s first warehouse conversion hotels, the Ovolo Southside is new to the scene. Step inside and it’s definitely a break from the norm, with edgy design details that mimic the former factory that once operated here—think exposed pipework, renovated cargo lifts, steel furniture, and murals on the walls. It feels like they’ve thought of everything, from floor-to-ceiling windows to maximize the Southside views, to artistic hotel handbooks, complimentary in-room minibars, and our favorite—the free drinks during happy hour in the hip Lo Lounge between 6 and 8pm. Rooms from $1,395. 64 Wong Chuk Hang Rd., Wong Chuk Hang, 2165-1000, www.ovolohotels.com/ovolo-southside

Long Loft

16

Sha Tin 18

For dinner, Ovolo’s Cirqle restaurant, run by Polish head chef Kris Bandel—who’s worked at Lily & Bloom and The Press Room—is certainly worth a visit. The zesty and well-spiced crab cakes are a must, as is the melt-in-the-mouth Cedar River steak. Don’t go to bed without one (or more) of the signature desserts: we loved the Champagne sorbet cup and passion fruit mousse with mojito sauce. Afterwards, head to Above, the hotel’s terraced cocktail lounge, for chilled-out balcony drinks under the stars. Try the Skinny Dragon for a light and fruity kick: Campari, prosecco, elderflower and cucumber.

Out & About Guide yourself through an art tour of the Wong Chuk Hang neighborhood. The spacious Blindspot Gallery (15/F, Po Chai Industrial Building, 28 Wong Chuk Hang Rd., 2517-6238, www.blindspotgallery.com) still retains an industrial vibe with its brickwork walls and high ceilings. This contemporary photography gallery features established and emerging artists from Asia Pacific and beyond, such as award-winning photographer Martin Parr’s first solo exhibition (Sep 6-Nov 1). Spring Workshop (3/F, Remex Centre, 42 Wong Chuk Hang Rd., 2110-4370, www. springworkshop.org) is another favorite: it’s open to the public as a permanent exhibition with regular art workshops, but it also offers residency to artists-in-working. You can wander through their living spaces (check out the quirky bathrooms), take a peek at the artistically decorated terraces, and admire the fruits of their labor stylishly scattered about.

Blindspot Gallery

Stay in the SAR If you’re looking to escape Hong Kong but don’t have long, pop over to our sister SAR for a night or two in a plush hotel.

Lap of Luxury The award-winning Conrad Macao offers five-star luxury for your short break—from the moment you check in until the second you leave. We loved the iconic Conrad touches around the room: the bathroom duck and the teddy bear placed in the room at turndown were sweet takehome gifts. For some pampering, head to the hotel’s exclusive Bodhi

Spa. The rooms here are the largest we’ve seen and with their enormous hot tubs, they’re great for couples. The Pool Deck is small compared to that of surrounding hotels, but this means it tends to be quiet so you can easily grab a cabana by the Jacuzzi, waterfall or myriad mini pools. For dinner, try the awardwinning Dynasty 8 restaurant, for high-end Chinese cuisine that will transport you back to old-world China. They specialize in wine—so be prepared to choose from more than 520 options! Rooms from $2,298. Estrada do Istmo, Cotai, Macau, (+853) 2882-9000, www.sandscotaicentral.com

This award-winning wellness sanctuary and holistic day spa has multiple branches across the city, but its latest addition—Retreat by Bodywize—will catch your attention. This exclusive day spa invokes eastern philosophies through its spiritual décor and use of Tibetan body treatments. For a luxurious rejuvenating experience, try the “Life is a Beautiful Journey” package ($2,680): this two-hour treatment involves an underwater massage with salt crystals and light therapy, a body scrub, and a hot stone Ku Nye massage using Tibetan techniques and acupuncture. 1/F, Cubus, 1 Hoi Ping Rd., Causeway Bay, 2111-1656, www.bodywize.com.hk

Caudalie Spa Did you know that your favorite bottle of red is packed with powerful, age-defying properties? Mathilde and Bertrand Thomas, the owners of Château Smith Haut Lafitte vineyard, learned about their vine’s fruitful ingredients and decided to put it to work double-time by opening Caudalie in 1999. In keeping with the whole wine theme, the urban spa on Gough Street features grape-shaped light bulbs, a

long barrel-inspired table and pretty rattan accents throughout. It’s an urban retreat where you can be as quick or leisurely as you like—choose from “Beauty Under an Hour” options, or go for a relaxing facial in the upstairs Vinotherapie spa sanctuaries, like the Vinoperfect Radiance Facial ($780)— which aims to moisturize skin and lighten dark spots. 3 Gough St., Central, 2319-1006, en.caudalie.com

FGF’s treatments cover pretty much everything: mani-pedis, facials, massages, waxing, threading, spray tans, IPL—we could go on. The List is a huge fan of the spacious manicurepedicure set-up, which gives you plenty of personal space, as well as its facials and massages. The massages (from $650) devoted extra time to hands and forearms—often overlooked, but oh-so-important for those who work in an office all day. In a hurry? Try the express facial ($390), which has you in and out in 30 minutes, without sacrificing a little extraction or a muchneeded neck massage. 2/F, Winsome House, 73 Wyndham St., Central, 2530-0610, www.feelgoodfactor.com.hk

Acupressure for pregnant women is also on offer to help alleviate pain and tension associated with pregnancy. If you want to go a more traditional route, Health-In also offers acupuncture, cupping, scraping and dietary consultations. If you’d rather just relax, you can go for more familiar spa treatments, such as foot spas, hot stone massages, body scrubs and wraps, as well as TCM facials, which use the principles of Chinese medicine to address common skin complaints. You can head to Iyara for anything from manipedis to massages, and don’t miss the refreshing facials. The List recently tried the “Pro-Lifting Facial with Infusion,” which is a six-course series of treatments to help hydrate skin and boost collagen production, as well as smooth out skin with microdermabrasion ($1,500 per treatment). There are also Dr. Murad Vitamin C facials on the docket, which will help sun-battered skin look brighter and more evenly toned. Salt Spa All the treatments at Salt Spa are given in pure-white rooms that are little salt microclimates: the walls, floors and ceilings are all coated in salt crystals to form a natural cave-like environment. It’s very hi-tech: machines measure the salt concentration in the air and pump in more salt if it drops too low. Salt Spa’s professionals all practice halotheraphy—that’s Greek for salt therapy—which makes use of Dead Sea salt mud and mineral products. Acupressure & Foot Reflexology Health Care Centre Of The Blind This is an unusual and interesting concept: as the name suggests, this center is run by professional masseuses—who are blind. An hour’s massage—be it a foot massage or a full-body massage to iron out all those muscles—costs $240.

Holding court in Lan Kwai Fong since 2003, the massage spot has since branched out to Mid-Levels; both locations provide relaxing environments where your massage is accompanied by the sound of birdsong in the background, as well as a cup of calming rose tea. Halite

Gao’s Foot Massage

Lis t This foot spa uses Halite— L ov e s the scientific name for rock salt—as its namesake. Aptly so, as each of its shops is decorated with Himalayan crystal salt lamps, which not only create soft and soothing lighting, but also act as a natural air ionizer and purifier, clearing out pollution and dust in the air. Whether you believe it or not, you can’t deny the relaxation you’ll feel during your 45-minute foot massage and crystal salt rub treatment.

If old school is what you’re looking for, Gao’s prides itself in keeping to traditional Chinese massage methods,

Party pampering Girls’ night out!

BruneBlonde

MiraSpa

Airplay Holding court on Wyndham Street, Airplay is home to a team of mane masters who will twist and twirl your hair into loose waves, bouncy curls or intricate updos. Airplay’s specialties are blow dries and updos, all of which are named after cocktails—the “sea breeze” unveils beachy waves and the “kamikaze” promises sexy volume ($280). Not feeling the stock options? Ask the stylist for a look all your own. The List recently tried the hair and makeup services ($480), and was super pleased with the results. All we had to do was describe the look we were going for, and an hour later we were feeling pretty glam. 7/F, W Place, 52 Wyndham St., Central, 2641-9888, www.airplaybar.com

Amika Hairdo Bar It’s a pretty simple concept at Amika: come in with bedhead, leave with

beautiful tresses. The blowdry outfit skips all the coloring and cutting, instead focusing on styling your hair for everyday events and special occasions. The process is quick and actually a lot of fun, as you can either choose from 12 looks ($280 blowout; $550 updo) or chat with the stylist for something off the menu. Amika is also a great venue for pampering parties, with a special package for birthdays that includes cupcakes, coffee and Champagne. UG/F, 8 Elgin St., Central, 2291-0070, www.amikahairdobar.com

Bellesa Hong Kong’s newest “styling bar” is all about fun and glamor. Don’t expect cuts or colors at Bellesa: it’s straight to hair styling and makeup here. The team of experts will make you feel tiptop, whether it’s for a special occasion, a night out on the town or even a job interview. If you just want a style ($230) you can be in and out in 20 minutes, or expect to spend just 45 minutes including a wash ($380). The venue is also large enough to get your girls together, pop a bottle of bubbly and enjoy a group night of pampering. Shop 701-2, 7/F, Century Square, 1-13 D’Aguilar St., Central, 2116-0600, www.bellesahair.com

Lis t Don’t neglect your scalp L ov e s when you’re pampering—it gets exposed to the same harsh elements as your face, plus it can get clogged by products and affect your hair’s health. BruneBlonde salon’s exfoliating clay treatment ($900), designed by French brand La Phyto, uses natural ingredients based on Chinese medicine to exfoliate your scalp and open up your pores. Choose from five treatments for various hair types: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. We tried Wood—a green clay made up of essential lemon oils, cypress and rosemary. It goes on like a face mask over your scalp, gets massaged in and left to do its thing. After an intensely relaxing shampoo treatment and blowdry, your head will be left feeling strangely lighter, while your hair looks cleaner and feels softer to the touch. M/F, Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, 1 Harbour Rd., Wan Chai, 2511-3988, www.bruneblonde.com

Flawless

Lis

t This award-winning boutique L ov e s spa offers a wide range of pampering treatments: from mani-pedis to makeup sessions, and, of course, facials. And does anything sound more luxurious than a diamond facial? Flawless’ new Diamond Peel treatment can be done on your entire face ($1,100), just your eyes, or other body parts like your back or buttocks. The process uses a thin vacuum-type hose fitted with a diamond head that sloughs off any dead flaky skin and de-clogs your pores with gentle, non-abrasive movements. There were many stages to the 70-minute treatment: a cleanser and skin tonic were applied before the diamond peel, which was followed by a hydrating rose face mask, face oil and skin serum, plus a renewing moisturizer and firming eye cream to finish off. We were impressed with how fresh our face looked, as well as the immediately obvious lift around the jawline. 4/F, Sea Bird House, 22-28 Wyndham St., Central, 2869-5868, www.flawless.hk.com

M.A.C Makeup Services For professional makeup services and a huge range of products, turn to M.A.C counters citywide. One of the best options is the counter at Faces in Lab Concept, where makeup services cost $380 for a full face and some instruction along the way. In The List’s experience, event artist John Chan started with a consultation, which covered our skin’s general personality (dry overall; oily around T-zone) and coverage preference (natural with a dewy glow). He then set to work, mixing up the perfect color combos for our skin tone for a peachy summer look that could shift from day to night. The “Girls Nite Out” ($6,888 for six) is the ultimate treat for you and five friends: you get private use of their nail lounge with the choice of a luxury manicure or prestige pedicure, high tea, Champagne and day passes for the pool and fitness center. Sense of Touch

Lis t L ov e s

There are many Sense of Touch branches about town, but if you head to the Crowne Plaza Hong Kong in Tseung Kwan O, you can be pampered in a Balinese setting, in one of the five individual outdoor villas (plus one for couples) that mimic the Indonesian isle. Propel yourself from beach to bar with Sense of Touch’s ultimate “Coconut

Paradise” treatment ($1,480). The twohour session is all about coconut: you’ll relax with a 15-minute foot bath before submitting yourself to a full-body coconut scrub to remove dead skin and leave your skin silky smooth. A quick shower is followed up with an hour-long full-body massage with organic coconut oil—pure bliss! Finally you’ll finish with a glass of refreshing coconut water and delicious coconut ice cream. 3/F, Crowne Plaza Hong Kong Kowloon East, 3 Tong Tak St., Tseung Kwan O, 3983-0406, www.senseoftouch.com.hk

Take 3:

Hair Salons No pampering session is complete without absolutely fabulous hair. We put three salons to the test.

Daz Hair At Daz it’s all about you: From the moment you hop onto a vintage theater chair, owner Darrin Usher and his team want to know about you and your hair regimen. Whether it’s a simple haircut ($380–1,250) or correcting a long overdue dye job ($680-2,200), the stylists will consult you on what will work best for your look and lifestyle. And boy, can you trust these hair-snipping pros. Once the cut and/ or color is agreed upon, swap to the basins, where after a few washes and toe-tingling head massages you can opt for a treatment suggested to suit your hair. If your hair was as damaged as ours, try the the formaldehyde-free, smoothing treatment (starting from $1,800) from Keratin Complex. Looking to head out to LKF right after? There’s a nail and makeup service available, as well as workshops for the latter. 2/F, Tung Chai Building, 86-90 Wellington St., Central, 2956-3668, www.dazhk.com

a cut and color—specifically to try out the trendy ombre look. Rennie got to work on our strands, creating a layered look that was more suitable for our shoulder-length hair (cut and blow-dry from $980). After that, color maestro Benjamin Amey took over: the ends of our hair were dyed blonde, and a special toner was applied all over to enhance the new color (ombre hair treatment from $1,900). After a blow dry, we stepped out of the salon feeling like a million dollars. What we loved the most about our visit was the friendly atmosphere—the warm, chatty stylists make you feel very much at home. 23/F, 1 Duddell St., Central, 2861-9830, www.hollywoodhair.com.hk

Paul Gerrard This long-standing Hong Kong salon is wildly popular and has an enviable reputation in Hong Kong for quality cuts and good service. On a recent visit for a cut, senior stylist Natani started off with a consultation, asking about our lifestyle, as well as what we liked and disliked about our hair. With our fine, lightly wavy locks and lazy disposition (wash-and-go in the morning means 15 more minutes in bed!) we were talked through the process of adding more layers at the back, working with, not against, our natural curls. The process was great, as you feel empowered and involved at every turn. The whole appointment, from consultation to final blow dry, took an hour, making it perfect for busy worker bees. We loved the result and the new, curl-friendly shape is holding up great. A women’s haircut by a senior stylist is $850. 1-2/F, Wah Hing House, 35 Pottinger St., Central, 2869-4408, www.paulgerrard.com

Wu Gang was a lazy woodchopper, so happy with his slothful life that he wanted to enjoy it forever. And so he decided to discover the secrets of immortality. He shouldered his axe and went in search of a Taoist immortal, who would be able to teach him everything he needed to know to live forever. Soon enough he found a teacher, who agreed to impart the secrets to immortality. First things first: Wu Gang would learn the healing arts. He applied himself with dedication to the science of restoring the body. He worked for one, two, three whole days… but still he was not a renowned doctor. “I am here to learn to be an immortal,” he complained to his teacher, “not to learn to wash a cut or set a bone!” Very well, then: Wu Gang would learn to train his mind instead. He would learn to think 20 steps ahead at all times, by learning the game of Chinese chess. Now, this was more like it! Wu Gang set himself to investigate every facet of this rewarding game. He toiled over books, theory and chess board for one, two days… but still he was not a grand master. “I am here to learn to be an immortal!” he whined to

his teacher. “Instead you have me hopping elephants and chariots around a board!” Very well, then: Wu Gang would now learn the secrets of immortality. At last! The great Taoist immortal discoursed on the state of man’s soul, on natural philosophy, on phenomena seen and unseen… for a whole day the teacher talked, and Wu Gang listened, rapt. But at the end of the day, he was not immortal—or even wiser. “I am here to learn be an immortal!” he cried. “Instead you have just filled my ears with meaningless philosophy and pointless distractions. I have listened to you for an entire day, and still I will not live forever!” “Very well, then!” thundered his teacher. “If you wish to understand forever so badly, woodcutter, then so be it. I will send you to the moon. On the moon, you will find a huge laurel tree. Chop down that tree, and you will have your immortality.” Ha! This was it! Wu Gang took up his trusty axe and went straight to the moon. The laurel was easy to find and with one big blow from his axe, he chopped his way halfway through the tree. This would be easy—another blow, and immortality was his! He drew back his axe—and the tree knit itself back into shape before his eyes. For no matter how hard Wu Gang struck the tree, each time it would heal before he delivered the next cut.

Baby Pak Choi

A pregnancy column with Sarah Fung

Let’s Have a Baby(moon) This is very much a First World Prenatal Problem, but I was a little sad about the fact that we didn’t get a babymoon. A babymoon, if you’re not familiar, is a sort of “last hurrah” for soon-to-be parents, allowing them to enjoy a final holiday together before their overseas travel becomes a whirlwind of stressful family visits and resorts with kids’ clubs.

The spending credit will get you two hour-long massages, which we used on two reflexology treatments. Heaven for puffy ankles, or if you’re achy from carrying the extra weight around all day. Of course, you can always dump your SO in the room with an action movie and spend the lot on a two-hour pregnancy treatment for yourself. Har!

Moms, if you didn’t get around to booking a last baby-free holiday, then I highly recommend that you book yourself in for a staycation right here in Hong Kong, like I did. In honor of the “Treat Yourself” issue, Daddy Pak Choi and I got to test-drive the Four Seasons’ staycation package. Starting at $6,880, you get a night’s accommodation, $2,500 spending credit for spa treatments, a three-course set dinner at The Lobby Lounge, late checkout at 3pm and free in-room movies with popcorn and soda.

We spent a lot of time by the pool. Attendants regularly came by with refreshments, and with the cabanas and the spaciousness that rarely comes with city hotel pools, we definitely got a resort vibe in the middle of the city.

They must get a lot of babymooners here, as room service had thoughtfully left a maternity pillow on the bed. Not only that, but just after we were checked in, we had a knock on the door and I was given a parenting magazine to read by the pool. The guy who checked us in even left a sweet little baby toy in the room for us to take home.

Usually you expect breakfast thrown in with a hotel stay, but when it’s dinner, it feels just a little bit more like an event. The magic of a staycation would be lost somewhat if you had to leave the hotel to go traipsing around IFC on a Saturday night looking for somewhere to eat. The Lobby Lounge ain’t fancy, but when you can’t eat anything fun anyway (soft cheese, rare meat, and all the rest), the hearty, simple menu is ideal. This might sound strange, but the late checkout really made it feel like we got our weekend’s worth. I even found time for a bath—a true Hong Kong luxury! We joked that with the tub, ambiance, massage therapists nearby and abundance of towels, the Four Seasons is the ideal venue for a “home-away-fromhome” birth, although somehow I doubt that they’d spring for that.
