O When the Saints The annual Fayre of St. James in London, a distinguished carol concert, arrives in Hong Kong in the guise of The Fayre of St. John’s. You’ll find the traditional offering of carols, but with a twist: the party continues at modern Chinese hotspot Mott 32, with a silent auction for “unique experiences” plus plenty of canapés and drinks. Peking duck instead of Christmas roast? Blasphemy! Donations to attend the event and after party start from $2,500 and benefit Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre. 7-8:30pm, St. John’s Cathedral, 4-8 Garden Rd., Central. After party: Mott 32, Standard Chartered Bank Building, 4-4A Des Voeux Rd. Central. $2,500 minimum donation; email maggies@quintessentially.com.

Take a Detour Can PMQ possibly get even artier? Detour, the city’s resident creative festival, will be held at the arts hub this year, bringing over 70 fun designrelated events SoHo-side. What’s more, they’ve partnered up with Sweden (yes, the country) to bring a slew of Swedish pop-up shops. Highlight exhibitions include a photography show by local snapper Jimmy Ming Shum themed around “Hong Kong Girls” for Yahoo HK’s 15th anniversary campaign, and a workshop section dedicated to Elaine Ng Yan-ling’s investigation in ecofriendly dyes, “Biochromes.”

Wrest Fest Sushi and sake make a great pairing—add in sumo wrestling and you’ve got one bizarre sports-slashfoodie Japanese fest. Returning for a second year, Sumo Sushi Sake HK features professional sumo wrestlers Wakaryusei Keisuke and Shoketsu Yoshiaki, both ranked top 10 in the Makushita division in Japan. Also odd ones to watch: the sushi and hot-dog eating contests! The outdoor festival on the West Kowloon waterfront includes food stalls from the likes of Tiger Curry, Mr. Bing, Sugo Sushi and Wagyu Master, plus live music. Noon. West Kowloon Cultural District. $220-520 from www.SumoSushiSakeHK.com.

Last month, photographer Michael Sloyer hosted an exhibition featuring work from his new book “Life Living Life.” Taking place at new venue Lightstage Arts and Events Space, the charity event saw a harp performance by Juliana Beckel, plus wine and canapés from Wine Shop Asia and Corner Kitchen Café. The event was able to raise $1.6 million for Hagar International, which helps women in developing countries who have been victims of human rights abuse.

With the most gluttonous time of the year approaching, you may be looking for a detox to balance out the festivities. The List’s Kate Springer recently tried Nood Food’s three-day detox, which comes in three levels: Classic Cleanse (for beginners), Active Cleanse (for gym rats) and Green Cleanse (for veterans). Each set includes several packets of esoteric supplements—think Zeolite and Camu Camu—that you’re meant to mix into your juices. The juices are some of the best we’ve tasted: they’re not overly sweet and the variety keeps taste buds intrigued. $600 per day from www.allnood.com

Tried & Tested Tress to Impress After the Mandarin Salon won The List’s Readers’ Choice Award for Best Salon in Hong Kong, we simply had to give it a go. This salon is the real deal: the stylists are extremely professional, the facilities beautifully maintained, and did we mention the coffee? Well, it too is awesome. Andrea Clark, the artistic director, started with a consultation to settle on the cut and color—and actually came up with a solid plan to combat our brassy blonde locks that wouldn’t cost bucket loads to maintain. The best part? A lengthy head massage overlooking Victoria Harbour. Thank you, List readers, for steering us right on this one. The truth about Straightening Treatments by Aline Jahns Founder of Strand and Science Brazilian hair straightening treatments (also called blowout, keratin, thermal reconditioning, smoothening) are a method of temporarily straightening hair by sealing a liquid keratin and a preservative solution into the hair with a flat iron.
Why is ‘Keratin’ associated with these Treatments? Keratin is a protein that is naturally present in the hair and which is lost over time and in the course of chemical processing. A ‘Keratin Treatment’ is therefore technically anything that restores strength, shine and elasticity. Why do most of these Treatments produce smoke? Because part of traditional processes requires that you flat-iron hair, and when most of its products comes into contact with heat, the heat converts the liquid chemicals into gaseous chemicals or smoke.
hyde, which is a known carcinogenic and can be extremely harmful to health. Is it only treatments with formaldehyde that straighten hair? No, this is totally false. Formaldehyde is a preservative not a straightening agent. Formaldehyde simply coats and ”plasticizes” the hair strands, and then through the heat of the flat-iron the hair strands are sealed and fixed straight. Formaldehyde prevents hair from receiving nutrients for several months. That’s why many people who apply these treatments containing formaldehyde experience dryness, breakage and even hair loss.
Is this smoke dangerous? In the case of many products, the gas released is formalde-

M e et the E d ito r s Over the next few pages, you’ll find only the very best gift ideas, personally selected by our editors, who have been collecting information about stand-out products all year long to compile the ultimate Christmas shopping list. There are no space-fillers here: only geniune recommendations of things we love.
Sarah Fung
Sarah is the managing editor of The List, a new mom and a lifelong lover of everything Christmas. The best gift she bought this year was the Nespresso Aeroccino (p.28), which makes crafting cappuccinos at home a breeze, and she is possibly a little too excited about the fact that Lane Crawford now stocks edible treats from luxury British food brand, Fortnum & Mason (p.24). She can’t wait to celebrate her little girl’s first Christmas, and is on the hunt for an elf onesie. Email her with kids’ news at sarah.fung@hkmagmedia.com
Kate Springer
Kate is the senior consulting editor of The List, an avid traveler and lover of all things health and beauty. Her favorite gift received was a Kindle Paperwhite (p.34), which she takes with her everywhere. Gift given? The ultimate luxury: a pair of bespoke men’s leather shoes made right here in Hong Kong. She is looking forward to heading home to Pennsylvania, in the heart of US farming country, for a beautiful white Christmas. Send your beauty, wellness and travel news to kate.springer@hkmagmedia.com
Charley Mulliner
Charley is The List’s associate editor and has been waiting all year for the cold weather “snap” to hit. Our resident ski freak, her winters are all about big knits, chunky hats (Le Slip Francais, p.26) and home-cooked lamb roasts (Gift Hampers HK, p.24). Improvising a tad for the SAR, she’s done her best to pick out her warm favorites about town. Send your own fashion suggestions to charlotte.mulliner@hkmagmedia.com.

X’mas List
CM: I have coveted Emi & Eve’s bags all year. This new “Sunrise” clutch goes straight to the top of the list—its brass feature is forged in Cambodia from bomb shell remnants, and the bag is sewn by disadvantaged women in China.
KS: I love my cashmere scarf from The Dot. Every piece is printed from an artist’s design, so they all have a whimsical feel to them. The colors are really bright, making these scarves an easy way to dress up my look. The Dot also sells bags, wallets and passport holders with the same concept.
$853 from Emi & Eve, emiandeve.com
$2,280 from The Dot, M/F, 2 Elgin St., 2386-6061

BATH & BODY Scrub up for Santa
KS, seconded by SF: Dr. Roebuck’ Polish face scrub is like a three-minute facial. Rub on the gently exfoliating cream, let it sit for a few, and then rinse it off to reveal brighter skin that really does look polished. You can feel it working on your face, with a refreshing tingly sensation. $270 from www.watsons.com.hk (online shopping only)
SF: Laura Mercier’s pistachio cream body scrub is totally addictive and smells gorgeous—like pistachio macarons. A really indulgent treat—and the brown sugar formulation leaves your skin silky-smooth as well. $415 from Laura Mercier counters citywide, including L207, Langham Place, 8 Argyle St., Mong Kok, 3514-9408
SF: Pollution and stress can wreak havoc on your tresses, which is why I love this John Masters Organics hair care set. It contains a reconstructing shampoo with honey and hibiscus to really nourish the hair shaft, while the intensive conditioner contains lavender and avocado to keep your locks lustrous all winter long. $480 from A Beauty Bar counters citywide, including Sogo, 20 Nathan Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui. Hotline: 2833-5157
SF: I can’t imagine anyone in the world not being happy to receive a gift set from Aussie skincare brand Aesop. The formulations smell and feel gorgeous, the packaging is exquisite and the products immediately class up any bathroom cabinet. I can’t help but recommend them every year. This set is called “A Certain Radiance” and comes with a hand wash, hand balm, body cleanser and body balm. $850 from Aesop, Shop A, 42 Hollywood Rd., Central, 2673-3885

Spa Treats
The best spa treatments of the year
KS: I never thought I’d enjoy a pedicure that didn’t finish with a fresh splash of paint, but I’ve gotta say that Bastien Gonzalez’s pedicure at the Landmark Oriental is something else. Yeah, it’s pricey, and a bit more technical than your average pedi, but the resulting sheen might just inspire you to show off your feet in flip-flops all winter. And Albin, the technician, is pretty dreamy. Starts at $1,090 from Landmark Mandarin Oriental Spa, 15 Queen’s Rd. Central, 2132-0188
KS: The strong scents aren’t for everyone, but it’s hard to argue with Lush’s colorful creations and its handmade, eco-friendly process. There’s something for every preference—from fig to bubble gum to rose jam—and all of the Christmas sets come decked out with festive flair. For a sampling of soaps, shower gels and suds, try the 12 Days of Christmas pack. $900 from Lush, Shop 3-7, 492 Lockhart Rd., Causeway Bay, 2838-0060
SF: If your skin needs some serious TLC, you HAVE to book in to see Justine at The Skin Gym. I had quite possibly the most effective facial I’ve ever had with her, and a fantastic education session to boot. With her prescription facial, she tailored a regimen perfectly suited to my needs, refined my skin surface with a diamond-tipped microdermabrasion device, cleared out my pores big-time, and gently got rid of dead skin build-up with a glyclolic peel. I left the treatment room glowing—not blotchy or shiny—and weeks later my skin is still enjoying the effects. From $1,280 for 60 minutes from The Skin Gym, Room 6, 21/F, The Centrium, 60 Wyndham St., Central, 2810-8088
SF: I’m a big fan of the Langham Place’s two-story Chuan Spa, which does Asian-inspired treatments in plush, Chinese-style rooms, with amazing views of Kowloon to boot. For the festive season, they’re doing a two-hour festive package, comprising a mulled wine Jacuzzi soak, a ginger and sugar scrub, and a nice and cozy hot stone massage. I can’t wait to get in the festive spirit by checking it out—although with a young baby, I’m mostly looking forward to catching up on some Z’s while dad babysits! $1,500 till December 31 from Chuan Spa, 41/F, Langham Place Hotel, 555 Shanghai St., Mong Kok, 3552-3510
CM: Summer is over, but that doesn’t mean your tan has to be! This self-tan lotion by LDN Skins is one of the best options on the market right now and loved by celebs. $265-495 from LDN Skins, www.ldnskins.com.hk

Beauty All that glitters
KS: MAC lipsticks come in every shade imaginable. The Sheen Supreme line is perfect for winter, as it keeps your pout hydrated. If you don’t need the extra moisture, then you can stick to MAC’s original formula, which has more than its fair share of festive red hues. $140 from MAC counters citywide, including Lane Crawford, 3/F, IFC Mall, 8 Finance St., Central, 2118-7649
CM: Available in 14 scents, the solid perfume stick by Le Labo is a great idea—simply melt the scented wax by rubbing it on your skin. And it’s pocketsized so you can take it anywhere! $730 from Le Labo, 2 Star St., Wan Chai, 3568-6296
SF: I had never committed to one signature scent until I tried Iris Prima by Penhaligon’s. This subtle fragrance was designed in partnership with the London Ballet, and is highly evocative with wood and leather tones to remind you of dance floors and ballet shoes. Iris, bergamot, amber and pink pepper round off a wearable, highly unusual fragrance that’s perfect for just about any occasion. $1,200 for 50ml from Penhaligon’s, Shop 3025A, IFC Mall, 8 Finance St., Central, 2359-3001
KS: Not only is Benefit’s Hoola bronzer a natural-looking sparkle-free bronzer for summer, but it’s also a nice matte shade for contouring in the winter. $217 from Benefit counters citywide, including Shop A09, Lab Concept, Queensway Plaza, 93 Queensway, Admiralty, 2116-9857
KS: My sensitive skin dries out with all the humidity and over air-conditioning in Hong Kong. Sodashi’s “Calming” overnight serum was recommended to me by a facial technician, who gave me a sample to try. After a week, my skin already felt more hydrated and less irritated. Smells pretty too! $724 from The Landmark Mandarin Oriental Spa, 15 Queen’s Rd. Central, 2132-0188

X’mas List
CM: OK, so it may not be the same as owning a pair of Louboutins, but the shoemaker’s range of nail varnish is just as dramatic—with caps that have been designed to be as tall as his heels! $450 from Lane Crawford, 3/F, IFC Mall, 8 Finance St., Central, 2118-2288
SF: Eve Lom Light Illusion Concealer is a lifesaver for the sleep-deprived. Under-eye bags vanish under this light, creamy formulation. It’s pricier than YSL’s famous Touche Eclat, but if you’re looking for serious concealing power, you’ll find it here. $420 from Eve Lom counters citywide, including Joyce Beauty, Shop 152, L/1, Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty, 3595-1152
KS: Created by uber-talented local makeup artist Natasha Sajnani, who also provides tons of useful hacks and tips on her website, Facetools pro brush set comes with a set of 13 brushes that are made with a mix of pony and synthetic hairs—so there’s no shedding and they stay soft. They’re also infused with chamomile and rose to help soothe sensitive skin. $2,300 from www.natashasajnani.com

FASHION
Haute this holiday
CM: I can’t wait to add a touch of sparkly gold to this year’s festivities—this top will look great with a black pant suit. $695 from Benneton, 23 Nathan Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui, 2367-6856
KS: Nothing says snuggle weather like a blanket you can literally wear to work. I’m a big fan of Free People’s ponchos— soft and sophisticated, these are an easy winter wardrobe go-to. $1,900 from Free People @ Lab Concept, 93 Queensway, Admiralty, 2118-3599
KS: Toms recently opened up a flagship in IFC that’s complete with some darkhued designs for fall and winter. And, as always, each pair of Toms you buy will sponsor a pair of shoes for a child in need. $550 from Toms, 3/F, IFC Mall, 8 Finance St., Central, 2118-3388
KS: I have always wanted a cool leather jacket. This one from A Boy Named Sue looks super comfy and chic at the same time—and I love the offbeat charcoal shade. Definitely coveted! $4,786 from A Boy Named Sue, www.aboynamedsue.co
KS: I love GOD’s latest foray into fashion. Some of my favorite designs have to be the two-way cardigans ($880) and the four-way shawls ($480), which are super soft and come in a range of pretty Chinese-inspired patterns. While you’re there, pick up a pair of flip-flops emblazoned with Hong Kong motifs. Stocking stuffer material, indeed! GOD, G-1/F, 48 Hollywood Rd., Central, 2805-1876

SF: As soon as I saw this dress, it shot to the top of my Christmas list. I love wearing black in the winter, and the flared skirt and the shards-of-glass pattern make this number celebratory, not somber. $2,100 from Mo & Co @ Lab Concept, Queensway Plaza, 93 Queensway, Admiralty, 2118-6008
X’mas List
KS: Kapok is one of my favorite stores, because everything is well-made and has that stumbled-upon feel. Though it might be a bit quirky for most tastes, I am digging this Maison Kitsuné fox sweatshirt. Fun fact: this fashion brand actually got its start as a French electronic music label.

Festive feastings
SF: I love anything from posh British department store Fortnum & Mason. The packaging is gorgeous, the wicker baskets delightful, and most importantly, the food is delish. I nearly fell over with excitement when I learned they’ll be stocked in Lane Crawford! Hamper: $1,980 from Lane Crawford stores citywide, including 3/F, IFC Mall, 8 Finance St., Central, 2118-3388
SF: I’m sure I’m driving the office mad, but I just cannot get over the Italian chocolate cake from The Mistral. I’m not even a chocolate cake fanatic particularly, but this one is decadently rich and moist—almost more like a brownie than a cake. $328 from InterContinental Grand Stanford, 70 Mody Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui East, 2731-2870
KS: The bean-based pastas from Tolerant are surprisingly good. They’re a healthier alternative to carb-loaded pastas, plus totally safe for those who have food intolerances, including gluten. $68 per box from various stockists, including Health Essential, 8/F, Hung Tak Building, 106-108 Des Voeux Rd. Central, www.tolerantfoods.com.hk

SF: Not drinking this Christmas? This Elderflower Pressé is a damn good consolation. Gently bubbling and not too sweet, it comes in a classy glass bottle and looks very elegant in a champagne flute. $32.90 from Great Food Hall, Basement, Two Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty, 2918-9986
SF: This absolutely delicious, not-too-sweet orange, vanilla and cinnamon preserve tastes just like Christmas! It’s perfect spread on a slice of crispy country bread first thing on Christmas morning. $150 from The Peninsula Boutique, Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, 2696-6969
CM: Il Mattarello’s handcrafted pastas look (almost) too good to eat. Created by Italian chef Filippo and Hongkonger Catherine, the pasta is inspired by Filippo’s hometown of EmiliaRomagna: think chocolate spaghetti, spinachdough cappelletti and truffle fettuccine. The duo also sells pots of homemade sauces online. From $40 per 100g, www.ilmattarellohk.com
KS: For a lighter alternative to the season’s sugar-coated snacks, check out Nood Food’s healthy hamper. It’s packed with coconut water, raw granola, almonds, dried apricots and cheesy kale chips. Of course, it’s not the holidays without a little indulgence: there’s also a mix of raw chocolates that should sate that sweet tooth. $800 from multiple Nood Food locations, including 2/F, Kinwick Centre, 32 Hollywood Rd., Central. Must order 48 hours in advance.

The Southside is fast becoming the hippest, artiest corner of Hong Kong Island, so I think it’s time that I tell you about how the Southside is, in many ways, where Hong Kong actually began. Why so? It’s best to illustrate this with a story. It seems like every single place in the world that’s ever been “discovered” has a colonization myth that goes like so: It has been days, perhaps months, at sea. But at last, the explorer has made landfall on an undiscovered territory. Success! With the surf still pooling at his ankles, he falls to the sand, praising his god and his country. A shadow falls over him. He raises his eyes: it is a native of this fair land. The explorer greets the native, smiling as he shouts in his mother tongue: “Hoy! You! You there, Native! What do you call this place?”
And the native replies, in his own mother tongue, something to the effect of “Who the hell are you, and why are you standing on my fishing nets?” And so the land of Whothe-hell-are-you-and-why-areyou-standing-on-my-fishingnets is named forevermore, a testament to the world before globalization and the fact that good explorers are not necessarily skilled linguists. What’s the point of this story, you ask? Well, this has happened in Hong Kong, too. For the village of Aberdeen was once known as “Hong Kong”or “fragrant harbor,” said to be named for the sandalwood incense stored in the area. When westerners arrived in Hong Kong they asked the inhabitants of the village what the place was called: “Hong Kong,” answered the villagers. The name stuck, and by the time everyone worked out that they were just talking about the village, it was too late. Hong Kong is now Hong Kong, and Aberdeen has become 香港仔, heung gong zai—“Little Hong Kong.” So the Chinese name “Hong Kong” is only used for our city because some westerner came along and got it all wrong. It’s just another way in which this wonderful place is a symbiosis of everyone who’s ever set foot on these shores: Without every single one of them, Hong Kong wouldn’t be Hong Kong. Although Aberdeen village, at least, might have a better name.

Baby Pak Choi
A parenting column with Sarah Fung
Baby Pak Choi’s first letter to Santa Dear Santa, I have mostly been a good baby this year. I have learned to swat at stuff with my hands, my nappies are aromatic and voluminous, and I have been practicing screeching very diligently. Please read my Christmas list, check it twice, and bring me the good stuff.
so I feel like my wardrobe should perhaps be a little more diverse. • An elf or Christmas pudding costume. Actually I will hate this, but mummy will like it so I will tolerate my dignity being robbed for one day. Or maybe just for 30 seconds so she can get a photo. To be 5 feet tall. I like to be part of the big-people world, but I think mummy and daddy’s arms and legs are getting tired from constantly standing up to carry. Can you make me taller?
This year, I would like…
• A big bonfire that I can burn I will not tolerate any my bibs on. I HATE BIBS. I of those fake plastic keys hate the snap buttons, and the way they cling around designed for babies. A toupée. All the hair at the my neck like a predator back and sides of my head is They don’t jangle right. made of soft cotton. I would coming in nicely, but I’m still much rather drool all over a little thin on top. The baby my clothes. mullet thing isn’t really doing Why can’t I it for me, so if you could bring me a wig, that just drool all over my clothes? would be great. I will also accept a hat with animal ears on it. Bibs: my worst enemy! $85 from Baobae.com.
• A set of REAL KEYS. Mummy says I can’t have my own set of keys because they are metal and sharp, but c’mon Santa—just a couple will do. I will not tolerate any of those fake plastic keys designed for babies. They don’t jangle right. • Some clothes that are not pink. I look really cute in pink, but I am a baby feminist at heart,

• As many packs of nappies your reindeers can carry. I am really powering through them, and mummy says she’s going to have to take on a second job to pay for them all. Lots of love, Baby Pak Choi Follow Sarah’s parenting journey at babypakchoi.tumblr.com.
