Beauty & Wellness Your guide to looking fit and fabulous

Four Seasons Nail Bar

Tried and tested

The Test Subject: Kate Springer The Look: The Four Seasons’ new Nail Bar has sweeping views of Victoria Harbour, five plush leather massage chairs and lots of dainty accents throughout. Designed by architect Richard Farnell—who also did The RitzCarlton Shanghai—the interiors play with jewel and polish motifs. Adjustable separators between each chair provide privacy, or slide them back to chat with a friend. The Experience: You can do the Nail Bar several ways— have a lingering mani-pedi (mani from $700; pedi from $800), book out the space for a “Nail Social” with your girlfriends (from $1,188) or treat your man to an “Executive Grooming” package (from $700), which includes a glass of whisky. The Results: On my visit I tried the CND Shellac pedicure (from $1,020), which has since survived several beach trips and Muay Thai classes. Most treatments come with a warm soak, exfoliation, moisturizing mask, a relaxing foot massage and a beverage of your choice—be it champers or tea. So you should leave feeling pretty darn pampered. The Takeaway: A spa manicure or pedicure at the new Nail

Bar is a total treat—but do note that it’s a small space, so you’ll want to book in advance. The treatments are not meant to be rushed, so set aside a couple of hours and get your money’s worth of relaxation. Four Seasons Hong Kong, IFC, 8 Finance St., Central, 3196-8900, www.fourseasons.com

scalp, gets massaged in and left to do its thing.

The Problem: Dull Hair The Expert David Gouygou from BruneBlonde

Main Causes “There are many reasons for the hair to go dull,” David explains. “In Hong Kong, the water has strong chemicals. These chemicals cause color treatments to wash out and turn matte very quickly. Swimming pools are definitely a big problem too—chlorine is particularly bad for highlights as it makes the color go green.”

The Fix BruneBlonde offers a unique range of exfoliating clay products from France to help combat the problem of dull hair. “We have a special treatment with clay, La Phyto, which can clear and clean your scalp, and help with problems caused by such things as pollution and products,” says David. “We have six different types of clay for different scalp problems.” The treatment uses natural ingredients based on Chinese medicine to exfoliate the scalp and open up your pores—it goes on like a face mask over your

After the mask, David recommends using haircare products regularly at home to keep your hair shiny and chemical-free. “I recommend using our Coco Blush products,” he says. “These are all-natural and ideal for stressed hair, covering the full range of hair types such as oily, dry and color-treated.” Keratin is also a very effective treatment for dull hair—and one that’s also very popular for frizzy stands. “We use a keratin called Discovery by Ybera, with apple stem cells,” says David. “It is formaldehyde-free and also smells very nice.”

Quick Tip For keen swimmers, a clarifying shampoo after the pool helps remove chemicals. David adds: “Put a small bit of oil into the hair before going into the swimming pool. This can also help to minimize the damage.”

The Cost La Phyto scalp treatments, $990. Keratin treatments, $2,600-4,300. Coco Blush products $290-350. BruneBlonde, M/F, Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, 1 Harbour Rd., Wan Chai, 2511-3988, www.bruneblonde.com

The Problem: Dry, Itchy Scalp The Expert Sarah Siriporn from Iyara Natural Therapies Spa

Main Causes “Most scalp itch is caused by poor hair care such as overusing shampoo and incorrectly using conditioner,” reveals Sarah. “Conditioner isn’t made for the scalp: it contains lots of mineral oil to smooth the hair, but when it’s room temperature, mineral oil doesn’t repair hair or the scalp—but rather damages both.” Other causes include heat damage, chemicals such as alcohol (a common ingredient in many products), infections and medication.

The Fix Iyara isn’t just about mani-pedis and massages: its Natural Therapies Spa is aimed at men and women with hair and scalp problems. Sarah first has clients fill out a consultation form. She then recommends the application of a good scalp mask for clients suffering from itchy, dry scalps: Iyara uses organic, 100 percent-natural scalp products

composed of ingredients such as plai (from the ginger family), wild honey, avocado and apricot. These organic ingredients help stop the itching, plus heal scalp wounds and inflammation. The salon-based massage is likewise an important part of the treatment as it increases blood flow. Following in-salon treatments, it’s best to use organic-based products at home, such as Iyara’s Marma Herbal range, to help improve and maintain the overall health and appearance of the scalp. Most importantly, Sarah adds: “We’re a hair scalp spa not a [health] clinic and we provide good hair care, but it is important that customers have a good diet and maintain a healthy lifestyle.”

Quick Tip Over-the-counter hair masks and itchy scalp treatments often contain chemicals which can aggravate the problem and result in hair loss in the long term.

The Cost Salon-based scalp masks range from $7001,200. First-time clients add an extra $200 for a consultation, plus a take-home kit comprising Marma Herbal Plai Ginger Serum, shampoo and conditioner. Extra Marma Herbal products available from $220. Strand and Science HairSpa

The Problem: Hair Loss The Expert Aline Jahns from Strand and Science HairSpa

Main Causes When it comes to hair loss, there are the seven “Hs” that cover many of the common causes for men and women,” Aline explains. These are: Heredity, Hormones, Health, Healing (medication induced), Hassle, Hunger (dietary deficiency) and Hairdressing (overstressed hair).

The Fix Hair loss is a complex condition that is caused by a wide variety of factors, so “the fix” is not a quick or simple answer. Strand and Science HairSpa offers a trichologist’s scientific approach to the problem: “As we can have many different types of hair loss, we will also have many different treatments,” Aline explains, “so a trichologist is important. “We have an holistic view about the patient’s issues and treatments.” Aline starts with a one-hour client consultation, as a proper diagnosis and management of the underlying causes is essential. In some cases, hair loss can be the result of excess vitamins, particularly the fat-soluble ones. But a deficiency in iron stores, such as Vitamin B-12 or folic acid, can have the same effect. Likewise, autoimmune disorders such as as lupus can affect the hair cycle and follicles.

18

A consultation will provide you with comprehensive information and a tailored daily care plan. The plan is extensive and includes hair-related products but may also include nutrition supplements or an overhaul of your diet.

Quick Tip “The best way to hide hair loss is with hair clips, but there is also some hair-color spray when the loss is minimal, and wigs when the hair loss is huge,” Aline advises.

The Cost A consultation is $1,000. Treatment prices vary based on the client’s individual assessment. Strand and Science HairSpa, Unit 17, 1/F, Block 2, Discovery Bay North Plaza, 96 Siena Avenue, Discovery Bay, Lantau, 2886-3820

Treatments Get your hair repaired

Capelli

Daz

Part of the Sense of Touch group, Capelli hair salon has just added a second location on Arbuthnot Road in Central (LG/F, The Ovolo, 2869-0939). These salons offer a unique repertoire of hair spa treatments, including the Scalp Purifying & Regenerating Ritual ($680980) for those suffering from irritated scalps. The balm works to detox and cleanse your scalp, removing any build-up from the chemicals found in daily hair products. After a color treatment, think about adding on the Ultimate Nourishing After Color Ritual ($680-980) which helps lock in color and revive gloss.

Daz salon has some of the most experienced technicians in Hong Kong when it comes to the Keratin Complex smoothing treatment, and its extensive menu shows off its expertise in this area. The formaldehyde-free treatment works by infusing keratin deep into your hair’s cuticles to eliminate frizz. If your hair is really uncontrollable in the humidity, try the full-on Keratin Complex Smoothing therapy ($3,500-4,000) which takes several hours to apply. However if you’re looking for a one-hour, in-and-out experience, opt for the Keratin Complex Express Blow Out ($1,800) which reduces frizz, curl and styling-time for up to six weeks. Alternatively, for a quick Keratin top-up, nip in for a Vitalshot ($600), a single-dose application to strengthen your hair. In addition to all this, the salon also offers a range of hair loss and scalp treatments.

Fortro range of at-home anti-hair loss treatments that can be bought over the counter at Watsons. The Fortro Follicle Reviving Shampoo ($198) won the Advanced Ingredients Awards at the industry’s 2014 Beyond Beauty Show in Paris for its innovative use of natural hair growth stimulant AnaGain, an organic pea sprout extract from Switzerland that helps unclog hair follicles. For both men and women, the product is recommended for daily use, along with the brand’s Hair Shielding conditioner ($168) and Scalp Reconstructing serum ($380)—which should be applied twice a day to the affected scalp area. Available at Watsons citywide.

Il Colpo Pacific Place The Brazilian Blowout is the original— and some say the one and only—hair smoothening treatment on the market. This Hong Kong salon stalwart has a solid reputation for the Kerasilk Keratin Treatment Service by Goldwell, a formula that creates an extra keratin bond inside the hair to smooth it out. List editor Charley Mulliner turned to stylist Ben to sort out her frizz-prone hair before summer (tip: it’s one of the only smoothening treatments that’s safe during pregnancy). The serum is applied to wet hair for 15 minutes, before it’s washed and blown dry, and then for the laborious section: each strand of hair has to be gone over with straighteners at least six times to lock in the keratin. After another wash and blow-dry you’ve got your glossy, straight-haired effect for up to six months. If you’re in a hurry, two stylists can work on your hair— otherwise expect to be here for four hours. But boy, is this time well spent for a frizz-free summer!

Blanc: Hair Spa Opened in December 2014, Blanc: Hair Spa exclusively works with a range of Kerastase treatments to quell all your hair concerns, from a dry scalp to greasy, lifeless hair. The List’s Evelyn Lok recently had a hair analysis with head stylist Ryan—which revealed a slightly oily and sensitive scalp. After a welcome head and neck massage with organic herbal oil, Ryan went to work with a Bain Exfoliant Purifiant (aka clarifying scalp scrub) to lift away the grease. He then applied a Masque Force Architecte treatment for damaged hair for about 15 minutes, accompanied by a short blast of hot nano steam—warm air that’s less damaging—to allow the treatment to soak in. The blow-dry was natural and wavy, revealing newly soft and shiny hair. $680 for one treatment; $880 for two. Shop 212A, 2/F, The Pulse, 28 Beach Rd., Repulse Bay, 2149-1886

Balms & Sprays

Dry Shampoo

For each hair type there are different products and it’s totally down to trial and error as to what works for you. Lots of oils and balms are available to seal in any “frizzies” and give you a more finished look that lasts longer—and don’t be afraid to add more product after hair is dry. I’ve found that for naturally curly hair you should always use a styling product and semi-dry the hair. For straight hair, or for the gals who have had a blowout, I recommend a heatprotection spray or styling product to protect the hair from pollution and heat damage.

We all live in a buzzing city with people to see and places to go; dry shampoo is an alternative to prevent washing too regularly, which drys out your lovely locks. Most of us have chemically treated hair, which dries it out, and we’re also battling the “humidity monster.” Dry shampoo is magic in a bottle: It absorbs oiliness from your roots and it doesn’t dry out the ends. It’s best to apply dry shampoo before your head hits the pillow at night—the shampoo will work itself into your strands overnight, resulting in clean, healthylooking hair in the morning.

Tip: If you have annoying frizz around the hairline, take a toothbrush, add hairspray to it and brush those frizzy bits into the direction they want to go or that look the best.

Tip: Always alternate your shampoo routine with a deep-cleansing shampoo to get rid of pollution or any product build-up.

Avocado Masks This little green mean machine is still the best-kept secret. Not only does it contain more than 20 minerals, but you can create more than 20 types of masks with it— whether it’s for dry and dull hair or for a facial mask. Just to give you two magical avo treatments for hair: avo and tea tree oil; and avo and mint oil. For every soup spoon of avocado use the same quantity of oil for a perfect consistency. For drier hair, add more avocado, as the magic is in the fruit! Just shampoo your hair well, towel-dry and add your avocado treatment. Leave it for 15-20 minutes and rinse well, then finish with conditioner. Repeat at least once a month. Tip: Remember the old stories of our grandmas brushing their hair 100 times a night? There’s a great reason for that: natural oils that have formed on the scalp get brushed down to our mid-length and ends, creating a microscopic layer over the hair strands and protecting them.

A series of stories, recommendations and tips on Hong Kong from people in the know. Explore our city based on the travel experiences that interest you and get itineraries for off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods.

Industrial Revolution Although Hong Kong is now primarily a service-based economy, it was once one of the foremost manufacturing hubs of Asia. You can still see evidence of the city’s industrial past in its outer districts as a new generation of artistic talent moves in here.

Spotlight on: Kwun Tong By the 1950s, the Kwun Tong district was emerging as one of the area’s key industrial villages and soon became known as the Satellite City: Hong Kong’s city-withina-city. Today, its old industrial buildings are in flux: peek inside and you’ll find a new generation of worker is setting up business—young artists, entrepreneurs and restaurateurs in search of larger spaces and cheaper rents.

Creative Industries Examples of the city’s industrial heritage can be found in Chai Wan, on the east of Hong Kong Island. Factories that shot up along the waterfront in the mid-70s are now home to an interesting collection of galleries, exhibition spaces, workshops and art collaborations. Stop by YY9 Gallery for work by emerging and renowned local artists, or Vertical Art Space, a funky exhibition of art that occupies 10 floors of a stairwell. Artistic Makeover Behind Aberdeen marina in the Southern District, Wong Chuk Hang is also undergoing a makeover. Spacious warehouse buildings are now inhabited by up-and-coming artists, design studios and exhibition venues. Guide yourself through an artistic tour of the neighborhood, popping in and out of these old factories at whim. Transforming Futures These areas of Hong Kong may have come from humble beginnings, but they have been constantly undergoing transformation since the 1950s. Through an industrial revolution and into a creative revolution, these unique, mosaicked corners of the city bear witness to Hong Kong’s socio-economic past, present and future. For more insider info on Hong Kong, head to www.DiscoverHongKong.com/InsidersGuide

Inspiring Spaces These old spaces don’t just provide a roof for these new creatives; they’re providing inspiration. Pop into the KaCaMa Design Lab and you’ll see how young designers are turning waste into art, creating innovative home and lifestyle pieces. And nearby Sealing Stone DIY Studio can teach you how to turn traditional Chinese handicrafts into modern accessories. It’s not just artists and designers who are moving in—retailers are fast catching on too. New Projects As well as the revitalization of old buildings, new projects are changing the character of Kwun Tong. The two storeyJockey Club Lei Yue Mun Plus was repurposed from an old school in2011 and is used to promote arts and culture in the community. Plus the Kwun Tong Town Centre Project is a

future development to regenerate the area. These numerous projects—both new and old—are changing the face of Kwun Tong, creating a focal point for East Kowloon’s thriving cultural scene. Foodie Heaven Kwun Tong is a great destination for foodies. Whether you’re searching for Thai or Japanese cuisine, local or international flavors, fine dining venues or family-run canteens, you’ll find it here. As Kwun Tong sits just on the harbor, it’s a haven for seafood connoisseurs who make a beeline for the Lei Yue Mun Seafood Bazaar. Just pick your fresh seafood live from the market and it will be on your table in a matter of minutes. Head online to www.DiscoverHongKong.com/ InsidersGuide to create your personalized itinerary for Kwun Tong.

Amika Hairdo Bar It’s a pretty simple concept at Amika: come in with bedhead, leave with beautiful tresses. The blowdry outfit skips all the coloring and cutting, instead focusing on styling your hair for everyday events and special occasions. The process is quick and actually a lot of fun, as you can either choose from 12 looks ($280 blow-out; $550 up-do) or chat with the stylist for something off the menu. Amika is also a great venue for pampering parties, with a special package for birthdays that includes cupcakes, coffee and Champagne. Airplay Airplay is home to a team of mane masters who will twist and twirl your hair into loose waves, bouncy curls or intricate updos. Capelli

The professionals at Bronze will come to you, providing hair extension services in the comfort of your own home. The micro-tape hair extensions are made using Russian hair that can be cut, colored, straightened and curled to mimic your own strands. These extensions can last for anywhere from four months to one year with proper maintenance. While you’re at it, these gals will do you a spray tan too.

Capelli Repulse Bay offers two options for hair extensions: Tape-in extensions ($2,000), which use double-sided tape to attach to the natural hair, or fusion extensions ($80-150 per piece) which employ heat to blend with your natural hair. Both applications use 100 percent human hair and can be attached to any hair type including colored, straight or curly tresses.

Raise a Brow Betty Lam, area manager of Browhaus and sister brand Strip Ministry of Waxing, explains how to achieve a perfect eyebrow shape in five easy steps.

Step 1 – Shape Up

Step 2 – Find Your Arch

Step 3 – Follow the Lines

Start with the golden ratio: look for the perfect angle to suit your eyes and face shape.

The eyebrow’s arch should peak at the outer edge of the iris. The brow’s thickness should be proportionate to the pupil’s diameter.

Use a makeup pencil to form a diagonal from your nostril to your tail. The tail should meet this point.

Brows are like twin sisters: “same same, but different,” says Betty Lam. The way our facial muscles contract can also make a difference in their appearance, and sometimes the difference is accentuated by the density of hair, as well as the direction of hair growth. Step 4 – Color Match

Step 5 – Fill Them In

Try to match your eyebrow’s color with your hair. It can make a huge difference.

Use powder, pencil, brow gel or a brow mascara to finish your beautiful new brow. Gentle product application is best—less can be more in this case.

10/10 Space 10/10 Space is a clean and brightly lit spa located in Causeway Bay’s Fashion Walk. While offering an expansive menu of services from hair cutting and styling to tailor-made facials and massages, 10/10 retails many cult beauty brands at the shop. Aside from touting treatments and products by luxe British spa brand Elemis, the spa also carries beauty and haircare brands that may be harder to pin down in Hong Kong: Think Malin + Goetz skincare and shampoos; Sachajuan’s vastly popular Ocean Spray products; and indulgent scented shampoos and hair masks by famed colorist Christophe Robin. The rest of the space is stocked floor to ceiling with hair products. Pro Hair Another pro distributor store, this narrow hole-in-the-wall is tucked down the pedestrian part of Jardine’s Crescent (adjacent to Forever 21)— blink and you’d miss it. It has one wall of shampoos and conditioners and another that’s stocked high with hair gels and accessories. The range of brands isn’t enormous and the stock changes regularly, but you can grab large bottles of reputable brands such as Kerastase for under $600 which can easily last you at least six months.

Dear Mrs. Know-It-All, Bikini season is approaching so I need to get my bits and pieces in order. But I’ve heard some horror stories about bikini waxing in Hong Kong. Like everything in this expensive city, Waxing Lyrical, you get what you pay for, so of course you’ll hear horror stories associated with budget, backalley salons. But is your bikini line really an area you want to take a risk on? Make sure you pick experienced waxing therapists as regulations are not too strict here—word of mouth in Hong Kong is one of the best ways to assess the situation. That’s not to say you need to spend an absolute fortune every month, as there are some bargains to be had. When I first moved here, and would rather spend money on cocktails than hair removal, I was recommended Freedas hair removal (various locations including M/F, 124 Caine Rd., Mid-Levels, 3580-0405). Service is fast, efficient and, more often than not, you don’t need an appointment. But it is definitely frills-free: you lie on paper sheets, the salons use soft wax with paper strips and there’s no messing about—it’s on, off, a little bit of talc and you’re

ready to go. The process does leave you a bit raw, but with a Brazilian for just $200 it’s one of the cheapest in town. However if you’re looking for a little more love and tenderness, then head to one of the city’s many upscale wax salons. Take Nude Beautique (14/F, M88 Building, 2-8 Wellington St., Central, 2868-9100; Brazilian, $450): the Brazilian wax specialists know how to treat you right, with sweets and magazines in the bright-white waiting room, little hygienic wipes and super soft towels. The therapists are thorough but gentle, using sweetsmelling hard wax and extra careful application if your skin is sensitive or the wax tricky to remove. Of a similar ilk is Strip Ministry of Waxing (8 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central, 2845-0838; Brazilian $440). Although here the lights are dimmed, you’re given personal in-room lockers for your belongings and you can pick your scent of high-quality hard wax—I loved the coconut one. The therapists here earn their money: they take care of all in-grown hairs (be prepared for careful inspection) and will offer advice on serums and shower scrubs for your arsenal. As you’ve got a couple of months left before junk season, it’s worth trying out a few yourself to see which suits, especially as firsttimers can score up to 50 percent off at most salons. Still set on bargain hunting? Keep an eye on Facebook, as many salons post promotions on their pages.

hidden gems

Ha Pak Nai

Whether you’re a pro with your camera or simply love to snap away with your iPhone, it would be hard to mess up the picture-perfect sunsets in Ha Pak Nai. Nestled on the shores of Deep Bay in the northeasterly district of Yuen Long, just across the water from Shenzhen, there are few who know about this stretch of mangroves and sandy flats.

50

Although it’s a fairly remote destination, Ha Pak Nai is one of the best spots to catch a Hong Kong sunset. Getting there: Take minibus 33 from Tai Fung Street in Yuen Long and get off at the Ha Pak Nai terminus.

Property Moving House Checklist Moving home can be a very trying experience and that is an understatement! For those of you who follow me on Facebook, Twitter or read my new blog, you will have seen that I am currently moving… trying is only one of my choice words.

Two weeks before (or earlier if you can) Book a date with your moving company – pick the right one… they can make or break a move – trust me. Donate all unwanted clothes, books and furniture – there are many charities here in Hong Kong who accept donations Contact all the relevant authorities, providing them with your new address – sadly there isn’t an app for this – yet?! Try to get some sleep…….the next few weeks will be stressful

Two days from moving day Arrange parking and access for removal trucks – your building management can help with this Remember to pack a “survival” box containing essentials such as medication, first-aid kit, toiletries, coffee, baby needs… and maybe even wine! Prepare bags with all items that you wish to transport yourselves (including your valuables) I have a favorite and sentimental vase that I hand carried Stella Abraham

Transport perishable food items in a cooler box – it gets hot here! Have a plan at hand for furniture placement in your new home – check out my ‘newspaper’ blog post @ http://stellahkrealestate.com Check the tops of the cupboards – I found some interesting items in Callum’s secret hiding places!

When you arrive at your new home Take another deep breath! Continue to give clear directions as to furniture placement with the moving company When unloading is complete, make sure nothing is broken and be careful to not have them unload everything at once – check out my Facebook for pictures!
