1. Rings The pinky rings (bottom three) are from my favorite jewelry shop in Brooklyn, Catbird. They carry such unique pieces. I buy one piece on every trip to New York. The vintage rings (top two) are heirlooms, passed down from my great grandmother. They’re my most valuable possessions.
2. Gold scissors I’ve been eyeing these in the markets for ages and I finally picked up a pair.
4
3. Brass serving fork and spoon Staying true to my obsession with gold accessories, it was only natural for me to find serving cutlery to match. These are from online store Schoolhouse Electric.
4. Ceramic plates I bought these from the Chatuchak Market in Bangkok. That market can be overwhelming. I have a few go-to spots and this ceramic stall is one of my favorites. I use these plates for jewelery, table décor and sometimes even as ice cream dishes.
5. DIY dog collar I adopted my dog Charlie at Hong Kong Dog Rescue—I didn’t know how much joy she would bring to my life! I was having a hard time finding a collar and lead for Charlie so I decided to make my own at Fungus Workshop in Sheung Wan.

BEAUTY & WELLNESS Your guide to looking fit and fabulous TRIED & TESTED
KR+ The test subject: Lindsey Ford The buzz: With over 30 years in Asia under his belt, A-list hairstylist Kim Robinson is appealing to a new generation with his line of KR+ salons in Causeway Bay and Sai Ying Pun. The focus is on cuts, coloring and treatments for everyday, manageable styles and that perfect #wokeuplikethis hair. The experience: The younger feel of the salon translates to iPads everywhere, a soundtrack by Hong Kong super-DJ Janette Slack, and a selfie wall behind the counter, where you can upload a clip of yourself swishing about your brand new hairdo. With all stylists trained by Kim personally, his fingerprints are all over this salon, right down to the artwork on the walls painted by the man himself. The treatment: Opting for subtle highlights (dye jobs from $800), my stylist Eric talked me through their signature multishading technique, using a single shade of dye in varying intensities to give a more natural look. We scrolled through the lookbook on the iPad, zooming in on particular strands of one model’s hair to pick out the perfect color for my medium brown hair. Following a quick trim to clean up my previous cut (from $450), he and his assistant wrapped up individual strands in foil, gave them a quick blast with a hairdryer, and bam—natural looking highlights and an easy-to-maintain cut in under 90 minutes. The takeaway: Kim Robinson-quality styling at affordable prices for the Instagram generation. Clients can also earn “hair miles” to put towards future treatments, and there’s a 10-day guarantee—if you’re not happy with your new look you can come back and have a do-over for free. RECIPES
KISS THE COOK Monthly recipes from Mango Menus
No one likes to steer too far from the Christmas classics at this time of year, but here are a couple of ideas to add a touch of sophistication to your sprouts and a dash of local flavor to your cranberry sauce. For the sauce, we bought the hibiscus, known in the kitchen as roselle, from the wet market along with the whole chestnuts. You can also buy chestnuts ready-peeled and vacuum packed from most supermarkets. While they’re more expensive, the difference is less than the cost of a manicure, which is what you will need after peeling a bag of chestnuts yourself!
Merry Christmas!
Brussels Sprouts with Chestnuts, Bacon & Truffle Oil YOU’LL NEED:
METHOD:
•
1. Peel your Brussels sprouts and steam
4 cups of Brussels sprouts
•
4 rashers of bacon
•
2 cups of chestnuts
•
Salt and pepper, to taste
•
2 tbsp white truffle oil
them for 6-8 minutes until tender. Set aside. 2. Fry your bacon with a drop of olive oil.
Remove from the pan and slice into strips. Keep the used pan on the side as you will need it later to mix the ingredients. 3. If you bought whole chestnuts, wipe
them with a damp cloth and place them flat side down. Make a cross incision in each one, which will help you peel them later.
them into quarters, if they haven’t broken apart already while peeling. 5. Toss your Brussels sprouts, chestnuts
and bacon in the frying pan you used for the bacon, and season to taste with salt and pepper. 6. Transfer to a serving bowl and drizzle
with white truffle oil. Serves 3-4 as a side dish.
4. Boil the chestnuts for
15-20 minutes then peel while still warm under the tap. Ensure you remove the brown skin as well as the shell, as this part is quite bitter. Chop

RECIPES
Cranberry & Hibiscus (Roselle) Chutney YOU’LL NEED:
•
2 cups of fresh roselle flowers
•
4 cups of water
•
½ cup sugar or honey
•
450g frozen cranberries
•
60ml port or Marsala wine
•
Zest of one orange
•
230g sugar
•
50ml sherry or red wine vinegar
•
Pinch of ground cinnamon and/or allspice
METHOD: 1. First, make a syrup from the roselle
flowers. Place 2 cups of flowers in 4 cups of water and bring to a boil. Simmer for around 10 minutes until the flowers lose their color and turn the water red. 2. Turn off the heat and allow them to
steep for a minimum of 30 minutes, or even overnight. 3. Remove the flowers and sweeten to
taste with at least ½ cup of sugar. Pour into a jar and once cool, keep in the fridge.
4. For the cranberry sauce, combine the
frozen cranberries, port or Marsala wine, orange zest, sugar, vinegar and spices into a pan along with three tablespoons of the roselle syrup. 5. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, with the
odd stir—don’t worry if it looks too runny as it will thicken once cool. It’s that easy! 6. Pour into jam jars and cool, then place
in the fridge until required. Makes 2 jars and keeps in the fridge for a few weeks.

3... Prepare your turkey!
You’ll need: 1 gallon vegetable stock / 1 cup kosher salt / ½ cup brown sugar / 1 tbsp black peppercorn / 1.5 tsp allspice berries and candied ginger.
Method: Whisk everything together in a pot over medium-high heat; stir and bring to a boil. Allow to cool and refrigerate overnight, while also thawing your bird. The next day, drop your turkey in a bag with the brine and seal the air out. Rotate the bag and put it back in the fridge, turning it every 6-8 hours. On the day, take your bird out of the bag, dry it off thoroughly, and roast it on a rack at 260°C. See p.16 for more festive recipes.
Psst… A new wine delivery app BottlesXO (bottlesxo. com) just landed in Hong Kong, which allows you to choose and order — and apparently receive your bottles in under 60 minutes.

WOMEN IN FOCUS
THE LIST’S LEADING LADIES
ERIS LAU “Many people still see sex as taboo, and that is very dangerous.”
There’s still a long way to go. We
just conducted a telephone survey with more than 200 private elderly homes and 80 percent of private home operators said they might not be willing to accept patients with HIV. When we talk to younger people, like in college, they have sex very actively but we are not sure that they use condoms.
Eris Lau joined the Hong Kong AIDS Foundation as its Chief Executive this summer. Speaking before World AIDS Day (December 1), she tells Adrienne Chum about the need for better sex education. I grew up in Hong Kong. After I finished high school I went to Denver, Colorado to continue my college education. I had been working in marketing and
communications for more than 15 or 16 years. Five years ago, I had a chance to join a charity, and my main duty was to plan a race and fundraiser for smallscale Hong Kong charities. I was always interested in AIDS
education and prevention work, so last year I thought it was the time to move into it. I wanted to help people with AIDS or chronic diseases. When I saw the publicity photos of Princess Diana making visits to African
countries in the 1980s, I was shocked. Princess Diana was everyone’s role model. I was like others, thinking that AIDS was a big monster. I liked [fashion icon] Tina Chow, who
also died of AIDS. She was a great influence, so I was more willing to read more about HIV and AIDS. I tried to remove the initial stigma I had against people with HIV and AIDS. That was the least I could do. I wish I started working on HIV earlier.
But it’s never too late, and I’m glad that I’ve joined to do more prevention and education work. HIV and AIDS is not a new issue—
it started 30 years ago. But when we look at the Hong Kong community, we still have a lot of people who are scared of this disease. When we talk to our relatives or some of our friends about this issue, we still have big biases and misconceptions.
I think youth today are very rebellious. They are very open-minded about sex, and they want to enjoy their sex lives, but they are not willing to listen to advice or hear different voices. We don’t have proper sex education in high school—not to mention primary school. Primary five and six students are already having sex, and that’s the truth. We are doing booths in college, but we really need to reach out to high school students. But many people still see sex as taboo, which is very dangerous, and why we’re so slow with sex education. We just want to make sure that they
know how to practice safe sex. The Hong Kong AIDS Foundation has partnered with MAC AIDS Fund to fight HIV and AIDS. All proceeds from sales of MAC’s Viva Glam cosmetics line go towards the fight. Find out more at macaidsfund.org.

The Tiger Parent Trap Like most working moms in Hong Kong, TV actress and radio presenter Anita Kwan finds juggling multiple tasks and daily routines a daunting but worthwhile challenge. The List picks her brain about coping as a working mother of two. By M.C. Hughes
I
Ph o
to: S
tewar d C ha n
n Hong Kong, there is a common saying that no parent wants their child to lose at the starting line. Giving your children the best and wanting them to be the best is what drives many to inevitably turn into “tiger parents”—those who strive to foster an overly academically competitive spirit in their children, often at the expense of their wellbeing. Naturally, Anita wants the best for her daughters, but admits that she has to keep reminding herself not to fall into the tiger parent category. Her older daughter Marina, age three, is now in her first year of kindergarten and is enrolled in two after-school activities— swimming and drawing—because Marina asked for them. “There are many parents who have children only a couple of years older than Marina that are attending a lot more after-
school activities every day,” says Anita. “I want her after-school stuff to be more fun-oriented and have some athletic element, because I want her to exercise more to improve her health.” In Hong Kong, school is very demanding and young children having to spend hours completing their homework every day is not uncommon. “I have heard of children as young as Primary One that have to do homework for as many as 10 subjects just about every night. I thought since Marina is still at a relatively homework-free stage, I could help her enjoy school more,” adds Anita. Anita suggests many parents unknowingly fall into the tiger parenting trap because they are overly anxious about the well-being and academic future of their children; the best way to avoid it is to keep reminding oneself what not to do.
Anita’s Top Tips: 1. If you have enrolled your child in fun hobby classes let it be a time that they can enjoy—don’t turn it into a competitive activity. 2. If you want your child to take on after-school activities that are academically heavy, such as tutoring classes, balance it with fun-filled activities throughout the week. 3. Every child is unique. Avoid comparing with others as it will just put pressure on both you and your child. 4. Know your child’s limitations and balance school work and after-school activities according to ability.
5. Don’t be afraid to ask and assess the mood of your child and quickly evaluate mood changes. 6. Learn from your child. The level of progress and your child’s response will tell you very clearly what to do and what not to do. 7. Keep in mind a few key words: happiness, family love, support, respect and understanding. You can’t go wrong if you have these words as your mantra. 8. Most importantly, have the patience to let your child progress at his or her own pace.

Creative Pursuits 6 quirky extra-curricular activities Science Explorer
The Australian Golf Academy
Do you have an inquisitive child who hits you with science questions you simply can’t explain? If so, Science Explorer may be the perfect answer. Youngsters can choose from themed science “shows” such as Exploring Ice and Fire, complemented by hourlong lab sessions which allow kids to make their own ice cream, build an airplane and even make it snow on a summer’s day in Hong Kong!
It’s unlikely golf would be the first choice of many when it comes to picking extra-curricular activities for children, but it’s ideal for mental and physical development. The sport requires hand-eye coordination and the ability to make quick decisions about a variety of factors, including climate and terrain. The AGA offers fun, educational courses for kids of all ages. Regular courses are $960 for a package of four lessons, while trial lessons go for $150.

Gecko Yoga Getting into yoga at a young age encourages flexibility, concentration, breathing and circulatory health as kids develop physically and mentally. Targeted at children from 6 to 12 years old, Gecko Yoga’s classes aim to instill an interest in the discipline in an interesting and fun way. Storytelling and music are used to bring the classes to life for younger participants, while older kids focus more on flowing sequences, relaxation and independent practice. 6973-1792, geckoyoga.com

International Riding Centre Family pets are quite rare in Hong Kong, making it more difficult for young people to get comfortable and familiar with animals than elsewhere. Encouraging kids to develop this useful life skill is made easier through the International Riding Centre, which offers classes for children from the age of 6 years old. The center, one of the largest private horse-riding facilities in Hong Kong, is set in
160,000 square feet of space. Private lessons cost $550 for 30 minutes, while group lessons are $550 for 45 minutes. 228 Fan Kam Rd., Yuen Long, 2488-0828, irchk.com.hk
The Mixing Bowl If you’re looking for creative baking and cooking courses, then The Mixing Bowl is right up your alley. One of the most versatile cooking studios in Hong Kong, the hands-on approach of the teaching team means things may get messy, but you can learn to make egg tarts, pineapple buns and Hong Kong-style sausage rolls. A macaron session ($475 per person) and green smoothie workshops ($700 per person) are popular options. You’ll also receive online versions of the recipes you worked on so you can recreate them at home. 5 Shin Hing St., Sheung Wan, 2524-0001, themixingbowlhk.com
The Little Gym Learning and physical development center The Little Gym provides structured classes in gymnastics, karate, sports skills and dance for kids aged 4-12. It also offers Parents’ Survival Nights on weekends, where you can leave your kids with trainers who have activities planned for them, while you head out for the evening. How to fix it?
The Heart of the Problem The demands placed on children in Hong Kong today are never-ending. Kids face a perennial problem of increasing amounts of schoolwork, coupled with an overloaded program of after-school activities. As a result, coping with school pressure and the stress that comes with it is a common phenomenon in Hong Kong. Family doctor Dr Edmund Lam Wing-wo believes the rule of thumb is maintaining a constant communication channel with your child. He shares some tips on detecting and solving these stress-related problems.
1. Talk to your child in a comfortable, stress-free environment, such as over dinner. 2. Show subtlety when raising and discussing issues, to avoid adding to his or her stress. 3. Discuss problems with teachers and work with them both at school and at home. 4. Maintain a healthy relationship with your child through an open and constant communication channel.
Stress can stem from four sources:
Physical If your child complains more often than usual of feeling physically unwell, it may be stress-related. Excessive lethargy is another indicator of high stress levels.
Emotional An increase in the frequency of temper tantrums is often an underlying sign of problems.
Behavioral Tardiness and reluctance to do routine things, such as getting out of bed and eating, is a warning sign. In younger children issues can manifest in regressive behavior like bed-wetting. Increased aggression, lack of motivation and anxiety are also tell-tale signs.
Cognitive Be alert if your child communicates negative thoughts and refuses to do things that weren’t previously a problem.

Take 5: Things to do this Winter It may not snow in Hong Kong's winter, but it can still get pretty chilly. Here are a few fun festivities to warm up the season. Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel
Into The Woods
Whether you’re celebrating Chanukah, Chrismukkah, or good old-fashioned Hanukkah, there’s plenty of reason to get festive with friends and family. Pick up some decorations and dreidels along with latkes and sufganiyah at your local bakery or kosher corner store—try the Kosher Mart (One Robinson Place, 70 Robinson Rd., Mid-Levels, 2801-5440) or Complete Deelite (2/F On Lan Centre, 11-15 On Lan St., Central, 3167-7022).
As the weather gets a little colder, skip the North Face jackets and secure a toasty spot next to the fireplace (it's digital; the closest we can get) at The Woods, and sip on some specially crafted hot cocktails for their Fireside Tuesdays special.
Beer Me Up, Scotty It’s never too late to pick up a beery advent calendar from the guys at the Tai-Pan Beer Co., who are offering 24 different beers and ciders in a single case, one for each day until Christmas. Buy this today, and you can even do some catching up beforehand... $725 from taipanbeer.com

Santa Glam Take the kids (or yourself) to go meet Santa. At Pacific Place, you can perch on his knee, snap a selfie with him, and tell him about your wishes for world peace. Through Dec 25. Carnival Time The AIA Great European Carnival (pictured below) is back and better than ever this year, featuring a massive outdoor ice rink to add some winter magic. A series of stories, recommendations and tips on Hong Kong from people in the know. Explore our city based on the travel experiences that interest you and get itineraries for off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods.
Spotlight on: Central and Western Central and Western is an explosion of sky-scraping financial monoliths, luxury stores, restaurants, trams, buses and endless streams of shoppers. Yet there is much more to the beating heart of Hong Kong Island than this, and to understand the city’s East-meets-West character, you have to experience the history that resides in every inch of this fascinating place.
Central
East Meets West With a remarkable history that moves through Chinese immigration, colonization by the British and subsequent handover into a Special Administrative Region of China, it should come as no surprise that Hong Kong is such a melting pot of Eastern and Western characteristics. From this cultural fusion—these leftovers from the past—emerges a new, modern Hong Kong, offering a fascinating mix of food, fashion, architecture and culture. Iconic Architecture Statue Square in the middle of downtown Hong Kong is a fine symbol of the city’s architectural richness. Once home to statues of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and Edward VII, the only one still standing is that of Sir Thomas Jackson, a former HSBC chief. Overlooking the square towers the iconic HSBC Main Building, boasting an intriguing design representing a modern take on the ancient Chinese concept of feng shui. Cultural stroll To take a look at some of Hong Kong’s older buildings, the Wan Chai Heritage Trail is a self-guided architectural and cultural walking tour including some 15 spots that reflect a confluence of design techniques: from early 20th century French windows to Chinese wood carvings. At 60-66 Johnston Road you can see a fine example of four tong lau— old Chinese tenement buildings once seen all over southern China. Many of these tong lau have been preserved and refitted for modern purposes.
Hollywood Road Park
Head to Hollywood Hollywood Road connects a large portion of the district, from east to west. Some of the old tightly packed tenement buildings still exist, although gentrification of the area is underway, with boutiques, galleries and cafés moving in among the old car workshops and rickety cha chaan teng (tea restaurants). Eat Your Heart Out Moving eastwards along Hollywood Road, the blend of Western and Eastern influences continues as you enter therestaurant district. Representing the city’s large French community is the bijou
bistro La Cabane: the all-wooden joint is a converted tong lau and former rice factory. Right next door you’ll find Chinese herbal tea parlor Kung Lee, which has been around since 1948. Walk Through Time Running down from Hollywood Road are the cobbled steps of Pottinger Street. Dating from the 1850s, this is one of the district’s oldest streets and is the place to go if you need a fancy dress outfit. Head online to www.DiscoverHongKong.com/ InsidersGuide to create your personalized itinerary for Central and Western.
Get insights and tips on your tablet from Hong Kong Insider’s Guide
Taste of history Dining is another side of Hong Kong where you can see a variety of cultures and flavors at work, such as at old-school diner Swiss Cafe, 128-150 Wan Chai Rd., a great example of the city’s own spin on Western food. CC, while fireworks and warm, glittery Christmas decorations flanking Victoria Harbour make the city look its best, it is indeed the most crowded spot in the city come December 31. Don’t even think about snagging a good place unless you’ve been camping out for hours. Then there’s getting home after the countdown, tricky thanks to all the roadblocks—although at least public transportation runs all night. The waterfront is the closest you can get to the annual fireworks display, but to get out of the mob and even closer to the action, take to the water. Sign up for one of many cruises in Victoria Harbour to see the fireworks show in all its glory. Bauhinia Harbour Cruise is offering a Countdown Dinner Buffet with free-flow drinks ($1,380/head; 2802-2886, cruise.com.hk), boarding from North Point ferry pier at 9:30pm. An easy, but chillier (and hence more ignored) choice is The Peak—bring up a basket of goodies and bubbly on the grass at Mount Austin Playground (a 5-10 minute walk up Mount Austin Road), and close to midnight, simply stroll on over to the Peak Circle Walk for the best view. Last minute Christmas ideas This year has just flown by and I can’t believe it is December already. Christmas is just around the corner. I have a good friend who finished all of her Christmas shopping at the end of October this year - sadly I am not so organised! The end of this year has been extremely busy so I will definitely be resorting to some online shopping this year. I wanted to share with you some of my favourite ideas and websites.
Spa Treatment Gift Cards I only have one friend who I know wouldn’t like this as a gift but the majority of people would love it. One of my favourite spas is Bliss at the W hotel - http://www.w-hongkong.com/en/bliss-spa

I know that for some people experiences are more their thing. If that is who you are buying for, then take a look at this website http://www.spoilt.com.hk/ There are so many different choices that I am sure you will find something.

Are you a good baker? I can’t say that I am but when I lived in the US I used to make peppermint bark for friends at Christmas. I had one friend that made the yummiest gingerbread biscuits. Take a look at Martha

I would love to hear from anybody if they have some different ideas especially when buying for a 13 year old boy!
