LOOKBOOK One of Hong Kong’s foremost creatives in the fashion field, Yeung Chin obtained his Master’s in Fashion Design from London’s University of Westminster in 2009, winning a slew of awards along the way including the top creative award in Hong Kong Young Designers’ in 2003. He is currently a visiting lecturer at the Hong Kong Design Institute, and has his own menswear brand at PMQ. Shop H406, PMQ, Aberdeen St., Central, yeungchin.com

1. Fringe leather bolo tie I highly recommend this handmade fringe tie from a designer friend of mine. It’s worn just like a bowtie.

2. Hand-painted leather shoes These are Hong Kong’s first handpainted and handmade leather shoes, designed by Hong Kong-based designer Simon Tang, of SAPH+ (saphplus.wix. com). I like the fact that he has many colors available for customization. My pick is this pair with black and silver splash patterns. You can tell him where to splash the ink to your liking or you can do it yourself. Even the shoelaces are from Italy. I would wear them with a cropped harem pant and a plain shirt.

3. Yeung Chin asymmetric clutch This is our handmade clutch with an asymmetric shape. We chose to use raw leather, which is easy to match. It’s a favorite of people who like dressing only in monochrome.

4. Tenny Lo x Yeung Chin John Lennon shirt This shirt was done in collaboration with illustrator Tenny Lo. I helped make the print. He drew a few famous singers, like John Lennon, Grace Jones and Madonna, all of whom I love. Irregular lines are formed while it’s printed, together with some wrinkles—it looks raw but it’s a well-drawn piece. It’s easy to match with loose harem pants for men and leggings for women.

5. Harness belt This is my most recent favorite from my favorite designer—Designer Yan Man mainly sells her works on Facebook or through handicraft markets. She takes inspiration from S&M, but it doesn’t look too bondage-like to me—it’s beautiful indeed. It matches nicely with a white shirt and baggy pants, or it’s also good with skirts for women, giving a tough feeling.

Tried & Tested: Mindful Wing Chun The Test Subject: Adrienne Chum The Basics: Situated in the heart of Lan Kwai Fong, Mindful Wing Chun is a cozy martial arts studio that hosts classes for all ages and levels of experience. Besides conditioning the body through physical training, they also teach the importance of deep relaxation and mental strength through martial arts. Their private lessons start at $700 per 50-minute class, and group lessons start from $1,300 per month for unlimited sessions. The Experience: After watching the new Ip Man movie and making another new year’s resolution to get fit, we gave this martial arts studio a try. Sebastian, an instructor with a background in boxing and a bit of karate, brought us to the back of the studio and taught us about proper posture. He brought to our attention important details like the direction of our feet and the angle of our arm, explaining how to remedy each little thing. We discovered that turning our toes slightly inward actually gave us more power and balance: Though my test partner was larger than me, I was able to resist falling over when pushed, simply because of the way we were taught to stand. We also tried a few relaxed punches as well, and Sebastian demonstrated how they could actually be more effective than a wound-up hook. We were constantly reminded not to tense up. This was probably the most difficult part, because we had trouble associating self-defense with calm relaxation. Eventually we got the hang of it and were able to apply a fair amount of force without getting our entire bodies involved. The Takeaway: I only spent a little more than an hour at Mindful Wing Chun, but felt like I learned a lot from the experience. They taught not just the basic stances and movements, but also explained it all in an easy-to-follow manner. KISS THE COOK Monthly recipes from Mango Menus

This month we have a couple of recipes that pack heat for the spice lovers out there. First up is a tomato, ginger and chili jam, the ideal accompaniment to cheese, cold ham and chicken—not to mention it is the bomb in a sausage sandwich. Don’t be afraid to double the quantities as then you will have enough to give some to your friends, in true domestic goddess form! Then try our Bombay Mix salad, a quick starter or side dish inspired by Indian cuisine, combining quite simply a bag of Bombay snack mix with freshly chopped salad and herbs. It’s the perfect combination of crunch, freshness, zing and spice!

Tomato, Ginger and Chili Jam You’ll need:

•

5 garlic cloves, minced

•

Around 6 fresh medium tomatoes, chopped

•

5 red chilies (keep the seeds for extra spice!)

•

3 inch piece of ginger, peeled

•

2 tbsp fish sauce

•

¾ cup apple cider vinegar

•

1½ cups coconut sugar

•

1/3 cup raisins or sultanas

•

2 kaffir lime leaves

Method: 1. Mince your garlic then add it to the food

processor with half of the tomatoes, chilies (including the seeds), ginger and fish sauce. Purée until smooth. 2. Add the purée to a large saucepan with the

apple cider vinegar, coconut sugar, raisins and kaffir lime leaves. Bring to a boil. Add the rest of the chopped tomatoes for texture. 3. Once it has boiled, simmer it with the lid off for

40-60 minutes, until it thickens. Leave it a little runnier than you would like as it will thicken further in the jar. 4. Pour into jars then allow to cool before

refrigerating. Serve cold. 5. Makes around 2 jars which will keep for several

months in the fridge.

Bombay Mix Salad You’ll need:

1 cup of Bombay Mix

1 cup diced tomatoes

•

1 cup diced cucumber

•

1-2 tbsp chopped red onion

•

2 tbsp chopped coriander or mint (or both, depending on preference)

1 tbsp mango chutney

Method: 1. Simply combine the ingredients above in

a large bowl, but do ensure you make this immediately before serving to prevent it from going soggy. Serves 2-4 as a starter or side dish.

what it feels like to have real, fresh food every day and how that makes your body feel, compared to working like crazy and having terrible Starbucks lunches everyday made me stop and re-think my whole lifestyle. My best friend Cara found herself in the same position. We both shared the same passion in a healthy lifestyle, so we started talking about plans to open a juice shop in Hong Kong. Here in Hong Kong you have to pay a fortune for fresh, healthy food. And the choices are very limited. Because we were going out and

socializing a lot back then, and wanted to find a way to cleanse and detox. By the end of 2011, we started Genie Juicery. Why our business works so well here

is because people don’t have time. In Australia they would have the time to go to the markets, buy their spinach and apples and juice it themselves. So many things have set me back over

the past 5 years. Patience is a big thing that I have

learned moving here to Hong Kong. Working with a Chinese company with

a totally different working culture, made me a lot more understanding. I have been living in Hong Kong for

9 years now. I met my husband here and I got married, and now I’m pregnant with twins. I’m very lucky that I found myself in this position, doing what I love and what I’m passionate about. I still hold on to that laid-back Aussie style in me despite moving into such a fast-paced city. I find that compensates the stressfulness and the uptightness. It doesn’t need to be like that. Starting a business with my best friend

has been the best thing ever. If I had to pick one meal to eat for the rest of my life, it would be salad. I love a good veggie salad with spinach, nuts, beetroot and hummus. I am not vegan. I’m a pescatarian.

I never used to have dairy products but now that I’m pregnant I do have dairy. Before that I would only have nut products, like nut milks and nut yoghurts. Sometimes, I go to sleep at around

8-9pm. People find that weird about me. That’s because I get up at around 5am in the morning. I like having quality time to myself, what I call my “Zen” time. The biggest lesson I’ve learned from starting my own business is how to treat people who work for you and keep them happy. It’s very important to us. Look out for Ethiopian signatures such as the wot: a thick, hearty stew which usually comes with injera— a sourdough flatbread made from the teff grain. For religious reasons, many Ethiopians fast for weeks at a time and lean on vegan-friendly foods, so you’ll find lots of lentils, legumes and collard greens. The main seasoning? Ba Yi Restaurant This modest Xinjiang eatery near the University of Hong Kong is popular with students and locals alike during lunch. See the Pink Dolphins Pink Dolphins, or Chinese White Dolphins, are some of Hong Kong’s most treasured species.
