If you have been in town for a year or more, you have most likely fallen victim to the forthcoming sacred Norwegian tradition, the Julebord! If you haven’t, you’re in for a treat. You see, most Norwegians go to a Julebord with their colleagues, friends, basketball team etc. for a pre-Christmas feast of indulgence in food and drink. The fantastic restaurant Credo took the time to show us how a Julebord should be done in 2014. Also make sure you check this year’s best Christmas gift list (with local products) put together by the super-skilled Trondheim Designevent crew. The List is comprised of a collection of engaged, local professionals who squeeze out extra hours of their days to make communicating what’s going on, possible. Thank you to these individuals, along with their workplaces, for sharing time and dedication. Good things are happening, stay tuned. Greetings from Jaya Thomlison, Editor.

Skurktur Skurktur was founded in 2009 by Arne Sigmund Skeie and Emil Khoury. It started as a fun project, a collaboration born out of spray art and graphic compilations. These two likely lads, from Bergen and Vestby, first met on an industrial design degree at NTNU and have since developed their art to become Trondheim’s predominate illustrators, with clients including RBK and Pelbo.
Anniken Zahl Furunes works as an interior photographer for the interior magazines in the Nordic countries and as an Interior Designer/Stylist at Dare To designstudio. She is the founder of Trondheim Designevent, a yearly event for all designers in Trondheim. Nina H. Five is an art photographer, educated at Norsk Fotofagskole and with a Cand. Polit. within pedagogics (educational sciences) and how people experience love. She combines the different fields as a freelancer and works from Trondheim.
Krisp Studios Thor Richard Isaksen Thor Richard is the editor of TrondheimTech, an independent news source for technology and entrepreneurial activity in and connected to Trondheim. He has a varied background ranging from being President of the Student Peace Prize to Head of Communication at Norwegian Centres of Expertise. Thor Richard has a Masters in Political Science from NTNU.
Krisp were founded in 2013 by Ingrid Reistad Sandberg and Jeanett Johnsen. After studying photography at Fotofagskole, Trondheim, Ingrid and Jeanett moved to different parts of the country exploring different styles of photography. Now they are back and specialising in food and product photography. The girls are into local produce and so believe it’s important that food should look delicate, and that the surrounding environment is equally important to the picture.

I’ve had... an earful of you T H E LIST trd T HE F IR ST ISSUE

The Season To Be Jolly is an opportunity to embrace those around you, though how to physically go about this in Norway is anything but simple. Here are my dos, don’ts and don’t knows. Words. Wil Lee-Wright Illustration. Skurktur
1. An unwanted kiss on the cheek
4. Formal greetings in Norway
Norwegian greetings are quite formal. A firm handshake will suffice for either sex, unless you know the person, in which case a hug is expected. This ‘hug’ has exactly the same approach as a kiss on the cheek in any other land. So for years I have been going in for a peck on the cheek, only to miss because the other person is on a completely different wavelength.
The firm handshake mentioned previously has many pitfalls of its own. In the UK people shake to whatever barometer they choose, for better or for worse. Here, however, the notion of Norwegians being very reserved goes right out the window if you are caught giving the wet fish.
2. A mouthful of ear
5. Choosing the right handshake
7. Weddings At weddings in Norway, there is tradition that, when the groom goes to the toilet, all the male guests form a queue and give the bride a hug and a kiss. Having heard about this, I was first in line at a recent wedding. It was only when I got back to my seat that I looked over and realised that everyone else was doing the cheek. I had gone in and planted a wet one, right on the bride’s lips. In my world of regular (attempted) cheek kissing, where is the exclusivity of kissing the bride on the cheek?
Missing the cheek peck has many embarrassing pitfalls. You will never be more aware of your personal kissing noise than when it is not reciprocated. But the worst has to be the mouth of ear. The Norwegian hug is a basically a ‘pretend kiss’, just lightly pressing cheeks together, like some sort of Eskimo kiss. If one party is unaware however, and goes in for the kiss, the ear can become an unwelcome destination for your soup coolers.
The choice between the standard missionary handshake and the arm-wrestler grip is a modern day question for the ages. The latter is undoubtedly cooler but if your partner misses the signal you can end up in some sort of strange thumb war. Don’t get me started on fist bumps, knuckle snappers, palm sweeps and combinations thereof. A dilemma which is not exclusive to Norway.
3. The Viking Crush – When to hug a guy
6. Back slap and clap
9. Christmas
Unless you are playing sport I would advise against slapping people you have just met at on the shoulder. Norwegians do not fight very often, but if they did they would probably kick your butt. Having said that, in the one fight I have seen on the streets of Trondheim, the two gentlemen in question mutually consented to take off their shoes beforehand, so it would probably be quite a gentle butt-kicking. One thing is for sure, your shoulder slap will be returned with interest later in the evening.
You can now disregard everything I have just written because all formality goes out the window during Julebord season! Just when I am getting to grips with my lips, the whole country turns on its head and becomes an Arctic San Tropez – clutch bags, air kisses and extrovert demonstrations of emotion. After 10 months of trying to keep a stiff upper lip, I am suddenly the uptight foreigner. So kiss and be kissed, I say – I’ve been trying for years, sooner or later it’s going to catch on.
As with the afore mentioned Norwegian ‘Hug’, the rules are different when you know the person from before. The key element here is knowing what counts as “knowing someone”. You will find out soon enough. An unkown will bend their whole body backwards and squirm to avoid the unwarranted greeting, a known will crush you with their Viking love. Rock meet Hard Place, Hard Place meet Rock.
8. Back from vacation There does seem to be an allowance for the continental cheek kiss for those just back from holidays. Indeed I have seen a double or triple cheek kiss dished out without so much as a “thank you maam”. I am yet to work out the how and when of this allowance – something to do with the tan perhaps?

Birth of Cool A seamless transition
If Magnus was playing Monopoly he would probably be the one who gets all the cheap properties and turns them into surprisingly upmarket hotels. And he would most likely be the top hat. Trondheim’s Bow Street (the best improvable property on a Monopoly board) is Bakklandet, and Magnus is making full use of its potential. Sat at his desk in the co-working space Sløyd, he is enjoying a few peaceful moments before the popular exhibition space is transformed for good. On the 6th November Magnus opens Seams, Trondheim’s newest mens-

wear store. It was originally meant to be a 10-day pop-up shop, a transient shopping trend which is capturing the imagination in Trondheim right now. But such is the positivity surrounding the whole project Seams has already torn up the exit strategy and is here to stay. “When me and my girlfriend Julie moved back to Norway from Berlin we wanted to set up a clothing store. But it was prohibitively expensive to do so in the centre of town, so we shelved that idea,” explains Magnus. “She got a job, we got a kid, I moved in here and continued my graphic design.” “At Sløyd we have regular evening events and use the space for all sorts of exhibitions and happenings. One of
these events was actually another pop up shop. I was sat here thinking, ‘wait a minute, this could work!’ The space was actually a retail space before Magnus moved in. It’s just taken him a while to realise the solution was right beneath his feet. Now that he’s there, the process is flying along.
“Breaking the monopoly and monotony of the high street”
Seams will stock menswear and accessories from different international brands, all united through a dedication to doing the things they do, and doing it well. Manready Mercantile’s beard treatments, Noble Denim’s jeans and Sketchbook Crafts’s backpacks, to name
Howlin’ “Birth of cool” 1349 NOK
but a few. It was the experience of working with these suppliers, many of whom are selling their merchandise overseas for the first time, which inspired Magnus to take the pop up fulltime. It’s hard not to be carried along by his passion for the products. “Howlin’ are a Belgian brand who name all their clothes after famous jazz and afro beat songs. This jumper is a favourite, ‘Birth of the Cool’ after the seminal Miles Davis album.” The garment is 100% wool and made in Scotland, where they know a thing or two about layering up. Perfect for the coming winter months. Perfect for getting out and enjoying the Norwegian autumn.
“I love this time of year,” enthuses Magnus. “I find, for some reason, that music sounds better. Walking down the street with your headphones, it seems to generate more feeling than when it’s warm and sunny, and everyone is happy and chatty.” Seams will also be stocking some exclusive magazines and records. It’s already got a vibe and whilst Sløyd’s events will be missed, there will late openings every Thursday with music, talks and beer tasting. With a line up like that, it’s hard not to see Bakklandet breaking the monopoly and monotony of the high street.

Recycling can be a confusing matter at times. In Trondheim there are four main sections of waste; • General waste is incinerated and provides heating for hundreds of houses in the area. • Paper and cardboard is recycled and turned into new paper or cardboard products. • Plastic packaging is recycled to make new products such as plastic bags and flower pots. • Hazardous waste is sorted manually and disposed off in an environmentally safe way. On the opposite page you find the table for correct sorting of household waste. Thank you for recycling. T H E LIST trd T HE F IR ST ISSUE

At this time of year the days get colder, shorter and darker. On the face of it that makes for a pretty miserable state of affairs, but not in Trondheim, where an eco-system of creative, independent activities and pop-up happenings are transforming the city’s heart. The List spoke to two of Trondheim’s warmest disrupters, Jens Olav Dankertsen from Livid Jeans and Rannveig Nordlie from DIGS, to find out what gets them going during the mørketid (winter darkness). “Some homemade soup and superior coffee!” suggested Rannveig, cheekily nodding her head in the direction of DIGS’ new café, which she manages. So what would Jens Olav recommend: a locally hand crafted winter coat perhaps? “Haha, of course! Personally I work a lot. Whenever I have time off I love to go climbing. The climbing wall in Trondheim (UTE-Hallen, Lade) is the biggest bouldering centre in Norway and a super fun environment.” That does sound like fun, but what about when he gets thirsty?
“Some homemade soup and superior coffee!” - Rannveig “I sometimes go to Diskoteket after work. BrukBar was always a good place to connect, so I’ll be interested to see how they get on in their new place (see insert). AiSuma has really good food and atmosphere. Plus there is Trondheim Mikrobryggeri - a great place to drink beer and talk.” On the opposite side of Olav Tryggvasons gate from Jens Olav’s new Livid boutique, is Rannveig’s

Livid Jeans was founded by creative entrepreneur Jens Olav Dankertsen in Trondheim, Norway. Livid Jeans is a small manufacturing company created from a simple love and passion for superior quality and true craftsmanship. Livid produces high quality menswear in a relaxed styles, which includes dressed up casual wear and outerwear. Livid is dedicated to honour old traditions in making jeans, and inspired by a time when superior quality, supporting local trade and taking care of own garments mattered. workplace, DIGS café. “I too like to get out and climb and cycle, but when I think of warm places I think of somewhere a bit more chilled! Sukker for example is a great community of handicrafts: people should check that out. They’re going to have a Christmas market too (see listings). It’s in Bakklandet, a quaint and relaxed neighbourhood, perfect for cold days and playing board games in Antikvariatet.”
“BrukBar was always a good place to connect, so I’ll be interested to see how they get on in their new place” -Jens Olav Rannveig and Jens Olav are largely divided by their chill preferences, but united by their warm attitudes and hard work ethic. Rannveig has been working round the clock to build and launch the café, whilst Jens Olav is a self-confessed workaholic who has built his business up from the ground. So what keeps them going during this busy time of year? “I get a certain satisfaction from knowing that I am trying something out, taking a chance. I think rating this and giving myself the encouragement is what pushes me forward,” says Rannveig who trained as a Civil Engineer for product design, but has not taken a regular job in that field since. “I was figuring out where to go and then I found myself considering the café just because it is fun. I love food and drink and this is a bigger network. Things here in town are as exciting as they’ve ever been. I have many connections with artistic things. The work is fun and very collaborative.” Jens Olav discovers collaboration in a different way. “The goal with Livid is to create a culture for craftsmanship down on the ground – there was no one who could actually help me make clothes that I wanted.

I needed to do it myself! I’m trying to bring something very different to Trondheim by focusing on the materials and quality of the work, with this type of integrated style. As you can see, we have fabrication right here on premises.” For Jens Olav it’s all about the enthusiasm and self-satisfaction of accomplishing things. But there must be a pressure to succeed when you go it alone. Is Christmas a time for celebration or just longer working hours? “I just love Christmas! I love everything about it. I am so into the feeling of Christmas: when things are cold outside and then you go into a store and it is really warm. Buying stuff for yourself and then buying things for other people. There are so many colours and lights outside.” Rannveig is not exactly the world’s most typical shopper, stressing a preference for saving up and treating herself occasionally. So how does she get on with this overly commercial time of year? “I actually think spending money on eating and drinking out is a really good use of money. You get a chance to hang out with people, eat, and talk. I’ve only gone out a few times lately but I can really recommend Frida, for authentic Mexican food. Oh, and it is really fun to see what’s happening with Hagen in Bakklandet (see insert). I really like that Hagen is creating a new vibe there at that end of town.” When The List followed up with Rannveig after the interview she wanted to add how much satisfaction she got out of the process of working towards a goal, not just the end result. Jens Olav on the other hand said “I’m driven because I’m taking a chance and trying to make things work. I’m creating something new.”

“I actually think spending money on eating and drinking out is a really good use of money.” From opposite sides of the street, with largely differing tastes, Rannveig and Jens were both speaking from their workplaces at 9.30pm on a Wednesday evening. Maybe not so different after all. One thing is sure: visit either in their workplaces and you will be sure of a warm welcome.
This autumn DIGS co-working space introduced a new concept café to Trondheim. Superb coffee in partnership with local roasters, Jacobsen & Svart. Food partners Per Viderup and Richard Nystad, pictured right, will be delivering freshly made, seasonal and sustainable goods. Specialty beers on tap, including local brewers Austmann. Late opening Weds - Fri. Stop in on Saturdays for a whole new brunch menu.
It’s kinda a big deal. BrukBar & Supa move to Blæst @ Solsiden The end of another BrukBar era. Where comfy couches are replaced by friendly watering booths and a sweaty, well-equipped basement is replaced by a dancefloor where you can jam out with hundreds of your closest new friends. Two of our favourite evening locations have merged into one, promising an even better night out. The List spoke with Marius Thorvaldsen and Andrew Christopher Anfinnsen to find out about their plans. “Supa, the best club, and Blæst, the best concert location in Trondheim…why wouldn’t we want form a super-venue?” “Solsiden is slowly becoming more of an ‘out’ lifestyle.” Thorvaldsen convincingly explains the decision to merge two of the city’s best alternative nightclub locations, as being a better fit for their vision. With a more fitting younger demographic than former room-mate Byscenen; and the potential to expand their space for a scene on the rise, this was it. Not to mention that Solsiden has some really exciting summer options. “It is much better than looking at a grey wall” What can we expect from the new BrukBar – Blæst? “We’re bringing things up to the next level.” They promise culture for culture’s sake. Plus some really good beer and premium (also vegetarian) hotdogs served in a great atmosphere.
From small seeds great things grow. Richard Nystad and Per Viderup have been working with seasonal produce for the better part of two decades between them. “Inspire people to get a new take on vegetables.” It was the success of their vegetarian cookbook - Mer Kål, Mindre Jål – which truly announced them to Trondheim. Simple recipes using basic techniques, based on their philosophy of transparency, locally sourced produce and above all else great tasting food. They have since started incredibly popular cooking courses, acquired their own farmer in Melhus and have opened a café at the beginning of Bakklandet, Hagen. And if that wasn’t enough they are running a small vegetable market outside the shop on a Sunday. Who said nothing ever happened on Sundays! The falafel is recommended. Emilie Nicolas Up and coming indie-pop vocalist Emilie Nicolas returns to the Trondheim stage this November after giving a magical, highly-rated performance at Pstereo Festival this past summer. Emilie Nicolas has rapidly gained attention in the Norwegian newcomer music scene. are praised as icons before they have even released their first album! Byscenen is a unique stage in the heart of town, creating a moving listening experience. Not only does the building itself look awesome (as depicted on our front cover), but its history as a meeting place means the walls breath culture and experience. Emilie has created quite a following, praised for bold lyrics and an authentic presence. Under By:larm in Oslo this
past February, Emilie was able to fill the entire Rockefeller Music Hall with over 1,000 people, who came for the sole purpose to be in a room filled with Emilie’s voice. We look forward to catching her show at Byscenen.

Every weekend there are tours into the depths of Nidarosdomen’s cellar and crypt. Take a walk amongst Norway’s largest collection of medieval tombstones and see a side of the cathedral rarely seen by others. Nidarosdomen was first built in 1070 over the burial site of King Olav II. Olav was canonized in 1031 after it was discovered that his nails and hair had grown for a whole year after his demise. He was also said to be “sweet-smelling”.
Refusing to be bound by genre labels, his music has seen him connect with everyone from traditional jazz lovers to techno heads. This December, Bugge visits Olavshallen with a show entitled It’s Snowing on my Piano, named after his popular 1997 Christmas album. The album was created from a desire for peace and quiet at Christmas time, and a break from stress and pressure of buying gifts and that underlining pull to be happy all the time.

With the football season on its winter break and the skiing season not yet begun, what is a sport fanatic to do to get their weekly fix of drama, action and sweat?
Well, good news! The basketball season has just begun, and flying the flag for Midt Norge in the national elite league is Trondheim’s very own Nidaros Jets Basketball Klub. The Jets are a newly established club, boasting a team comprised of both local talent and professional international players from the USA, Australia and Sweden. More intimate, and generally warmer than watching football, a basketball game is a show as much as it is a sporting event and the games are fittingly referred to as ‘Showtime’. The Jets’ first home game of the season pulled in around 400 people to fill the stands. Aside from fast-paced action on the court, there was music pumping, a play area for children and a mascot entertaining the younguns’ at half time.
World-renowned Bugge Wesseltoft is a Norwegian jazz musician, pianist, composer and producer, with a tremendous impact on the jazz scene in Norway… and beyond.

Amongst other creepy artefacts in the crypt you will find a skeleton dating back to the late 11th century. We do not know whether the skeleton also has long hair and fingernails, though we suspect it will not smell so sweet after the better part of a millennium underground. The only way to know for sure is to go and see for yourselves; though be quick as their tours are limited to 10 per group.

Halloween may have come and gone, but visit Nidaros Cathedral this November and you can experience creepy on a whole new level.

Guided tour in the Nidaros Cathedral crypt
The undercurrent of his album stems from his experiences working at a psychiatric hospital in his young days. It was here that he realised that, for certain people, the season to be jolly was a season of depression and loneliness. When he was asked to make a Christmas album, he did so on his own terms. This contemplative album offers beautiful, quiet instrumental variations of some classic Christmas songs, as well as pieces composed by Wesseltoft himself. Bugge Wesseltoft’s concert looks to provide a little oasis of calm and time to reflect, in an otherwise hectic run-up to Christmas.

Christmas Market at Sverresborg Christmas in Norway wouldn’t be same without a ‘julemarked’. A fresh svele (Norwegian pancake) and a nice cup of coffee, nestled in your mittened hands, and you are ready to tick a few more items off that dreaded gift list. Sverresborg Folk Museum, one of Norway’s largest cultural museums, outshines the competition this year, quite literally. Set in amongst a collection of historical buildings from all over Trøndelag (dismantled and reassembled overlooking Trondheim), the market serves up all the usual activities such as Christmas decoration workshops, meet Santa, lighting of the tree and story-telling.
This year however Sverresborg have also invited the videographer Pekka Stokke to ‘video map’ the ruins of old King Sverre’s castle. It is sure to be a spectacular performance, as anyone who saw Pekka’s lightshow at the recent Motorpsycho show in Nidarosdomen can attest.
500 concerts. Expect a perfectly tuned live performance, which is both energetic and beautiful at the same time.
Local rap legends Gode Ord Dør Sist (‘Good Words Die Last’) are hometown heroes. The politically-conscious rap duo, known as GODS in these parts, stem from ‘Lamon’ in Trondheim and for the past 15 years they’ve been making their mark on the Norwegian underground hip hop scene. Erik ‘Børek’ Bruseth and Trond ‘Tfuzz’ Wiger combine clever and poetic lyrics, and no small amount of the local brew, to move audiences from all ends of the country. They are hard workers too – racking up over
If you haven’t heard of Børek and Tfuzz before, you will have undoubtedly seen their Dahls-inspired stickers, which adorn bar walls and lampposts all over town. GODS’ passion has engendered a loyal following and in 2012 Tfuzz was presented with the accolade of Artist of the Year for Sør-Trøndelag. That’s about as mainstream as you will get with these hip hop deities. This is strictly street, with the odd bit of brass chucked in for good measure. Several city anthems about Trondheim too, so expect rapa-longs when they take on the newly combined BrukBar/Blæst. 28 November, 22:00. Price 200 / 150 NOK. BrukBar Blæst. Tmv-kaia 17. blaest.no

GODS
If you like to get out of town for your Christmas shopping (and want snow guaranteed), then Røros Julemarked is the one for you. About three hours by train from Trondheim and you step into a winter wonderland. A UNESCO World Heritage town with two main streets, bustling with vendors and booths selling anything from classic Norwegian woollen socks to cold reindeer heart and sausages.
Trøndelagsutstillingen is an annual exhibition, curated by local artists within the Trøndelag region. This year’s exhibition is the 38th of its kind. Since the first exhibition in 1977, the event has exposed great Norwegian artists like Ingrid Sitter and Håkon Bleken. The exhibition is spread across two different venues: Trøndelag Center for Contemproary Art and Trondheim Art Association. On Sundays there are guided tours of the exhibitions, 13:00 at the Trøndelag Centre and 14:30 at the Art Association. 18 October – 9 November Trøndelag Senter for Samtidskunst, Fjordgata 11 og Trondhjems Kunstforening , Bispegata 9A. The List does Q&A with Svein Inge Sæther from
TRONDHEIM DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL
Love City, Jalalabad The List: Hi Svein Inge! I hear that you are the go-to man for movie tips for the upcoming film festival. Tell us, what should we be looking forward to? This year’s program is bigger and more comprehensive than ever before. We are expanding and also offering way more than “just” documentary films. Our audience can generally
Worth catching: Love City, Jalabad In 1964, Bob Dylan released “The Times They Are a-Changin’”, a song that helped start a youth revolution. In 2014, 50 years later, the youth of Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan have had enough gloom and want to use their creativity to create some freedom and joy. Their first step is to rename Jalalabad ”Love City ”,
look forward to the same quality and variety as previous years - and then some. We have chosen to hold many viewings at Dokkhuset, which provides a perfect social setting, and will be somewhat of a festival hotspot. The List: So what else is this film festival all about? Well actually, Trondheim documentary festival is not just a film festival. It’s the only film festival in Norway that includes different outputs; we include a lot of different genres of documentary beyond film, including radio, photography, literature and debate.
just a tiny, tiny selection of suitable content. Quality is key. Everything that we are trying to accomplish comes down to sharing good stories. Storytelling takes different forms and that is why the festival showcases stories using different media platforms. The List: Sounds great, I’m sold! What kind of visitors do you get and who are you reaching out to this year? We usually attract about 500 people in and around the city. This year we’re reaching out to new territories. We’re especially looking forward to getting more students involved.
The List: It sounds like you have a lot on your plate, what’s your job like?
The List: What are those of us who don’t usually watch documentaries missing?
My job is to find high quality films that work in tune with our philosophy. Storytelling is the foundational element and it takes many forms. I have to search through a huge selection to find
You’re missing all the genuine stories from the real world – because everybody knows: truth is stranger than fiction.

TRONDHEIMTECH.NO Breaking news from the Technology capital Money talks. Subsea breakthrough for Sensorlink - 50 million NOK sailed into their account following contract with BP for anticorrosion systems. Meanwhile, EMGS are doing the samba de janeiro after getting a 35 million NOK nod by Brazilian giants Petrobras. Statoil invests in NTNU spin-off Hybond, to get access to HYMEN Bonding technology. Step on it. Trondheim’s own Aalberg Audio is seeking funding through Indiegogo to launch the world’s first wireless guitar pedal. Plenty of money still to go around. Alliance Venture recently announced a new 510 million NOK fund to focus on early-stage investments in IT called Alliance Venture Spring, supporting Norwegian companies. Playful. Trondheim’s first-ever Maker Faire was a huge success with over 10,000 visitors flocking to the city centre to test out local innovation. Microsoft is launching Delve, software that has been partly developed in Trondheim (formerly codename Oslo, but we wont hold that against them). Fishy Business. Aqualine has been named business of the year 2014 after innovating an escape-proof net cage for salmon. The Aqualine CEO did not however promise to issue refunds in case of a salmon jailbreak. The award was presented in September during the Chamber of Commerce business faire Manifestasjon 2014, which seems to break new attendance records every year. And last but not least, your grandmothers’ favourite startup AssiTech are about to launch their life-altering walking aid, after an influx of soft funding in 2014 gave the project legs. Can a tank have a birthday party? Well, the legendary towing tank inside MARINTEK research center just did. The 75 year-old tank has cemented her place in Norwegian industrial history and will receive a brand new logo to mark this occasion.

Mobile Games are Trondheim’s next big thing The recent wave of gaming companies from Trondheim is a story about a changing globalised industry and the merit of a DIY mentality. In a society where almost everything runs on code, code writers are top dogs, and Trondheim has excellent code writers. DirtyBitGames and Bertheussen recently released last year’s fiscal results, showing that IT maintains a strong and steady income by the way of successful releases. Both companies are also currently preparing to launch new games within the year. Trondheim’s mobile content discovery platform, Zedge, has just passed the impressive 100 million-download mark positioning them as a top global player. With a new iOS app, Zedge has managed to increase their revenue by around 50 percent in year on year and are now setting up shop in Helsinki and New York.
the eager consumers. Global Games Investment Review says that mobile and online gaming is becoming such a huge force worldwide that it could grow at a compound annual growth rate of 23.6% So, there are several good reasons to be optimistic. The popular initiative NTNU App Lab provides Trondheim’s students with an opportunity to develop their own apps with help from mentors at Zedge and Headspin. Some of the students participating will be enrolled at NTNU masters program for game development, led by young professor Alf Inge Wang founder of EdTech, game company Kahoot.
10 years ago the picture was quite different where big game companies controlled the distribution channels to such a degree that it was almost impossible for entrepreneurs to break through independently. Then along came App Store. Finally there was an opening for third-party titles, where the barrier to entry for developers was low and games were both cheap and fun for
