After reviewing this magazine I’m pretty convinced that, believe or not, Norway is the place to be this summer. I’m thinking practice spaces at Trikkestallen, swimming at Sjøbadet, sweet-talking free samples off friends at Matfestival and jamming out to one of the various 300 different concerts, workshops, meetings, etc. etc. that are happening over the next 64 days. Can I speak some truth? Last year I spent the entire summer on the West coast of the U.S. and Canada, and then about half of that time wishing myself back home in Trondheim. That’s right, as I was freezing on the very windy 16 degree streets of San Francisco whilst Trondheim’s locals and visitors were experiencing endless days of sun and high 20 degree. As Dickens said ”the coldest winter I’ve spent was the summer I spent in San Francisco”. But for those of you that are travelling, make sure to hurry back and capture some of the amazing that is happening here this summer. Turocon, for real? I Iove me some comics. And while I can’t expect the axis-tilting weather madness that happened last year, I’m definitely going to be filling my time with at least a 100 of these concerts and events at your fingertips in this magazine. Are you with us? So I guess the moral of this story is: “Hey people of the Trondheim hood, you’re missing the best time of the year when you spend the summer months abroad”. I’m happy to present the 5th edition of The List, entirely dedicated to summer fun and the shaping of new festival memories. Thanks to all of the amazing creative types, students, eager startups and contributors that make The List an ever-improving, and frankly, quite essential product. Get in touch with your ideas and be part of shaping Norway’s first English-language culture magazine. The List is officially recommending that you “stay-ayy for your vaycay.”

For me, summer has always been synonymous with camping Words: Courtney Lineback Illustration: Marianne Selberg
When I was just three years old, barely able to walk, my mom and dad decided to take my younger sister (who was still unable to walk, or function as a human in general) and myself on a 30-day hiking and camping trip around the national parks in the Western U.S I do not recall the day when my sister and I both, simultaneously, were debilitated by a horrible stomach virus. Nor do I recollect the moment when my parents begrudgingly gave up on their grand adventure and retreated to the air-conditioned safety of my grandparents’ home in Kansas. I do, however, have distinctly disturbing memories of a fox attacking my favourite Barbie doll; a tragic event that left her forever scarred with horribly deforming sharped-tooth puncture wounds. To many, the futile outcome of this early adventure may have been a sign that perhaps camping and would be destined to a rocky relationship. They would have been correct correct. Like any first impression that is foolishly ignored, I would pay for my oversight and spend my entire childhood and adolescence constantly striving to avoid camping-related disasters.

THE LIST trd T HE F IFT H ISSUE
Like the time in Washington when my mom decided to set-up our entire campsite on top of a timed sprinkler system that went off, shooting water with an alarming force, at precisely 4 am. There was another time in Oklahoma, on the same holiday weekend in later years, no less, where our skillfully campfire-cooked dinner was abruptly brought to an end by the arrival of torrential rain, howling winds, worryingly darkening skies and screeching tornado sirens. The children at the campsite, my sister and I included, hid in the concrete bathroom stalls while the adults frantically threw everything into the car. Those chaotically collected belongings, which had been stuffed into an overhead storage compartment, promptly blew off the roof of the car when met with gale-force winds during a catastrophically unsuccessful attempt to drive across a bridge. Sleeping bags, clothes, and cooking supplies spread out in a colorful fan of failure across the black asphalt. I am almost certain that a Barbie doll was injured in that escapade as well. One night, while hiking across Missouri on the Ozark Trail (minus the locatable or tangible trail) my parents and I were forced to clear a space in the thick underbrush to put our tents up for the night, in a state of exhausted desperation. There may not have been a path for humans anywhere nearby, but we had apparently chosen to settle ourselves directly in the middle of an animal highway. We were serenaded throughout that sleepless night by alarmingly large-sounding snuffles and rustles. Despite the countless disasters I have encountered while camping, it is still one of my all-time favourite activities. I love the adventure, the challenge, the sense of accomplishment associated with a more primitive survival (or, in my case, survival in general). Some of my fondest memories from childhood are from camping: watching the roaring fire turn to glowing embers; waking up to the sunshine streaming through the tent flaps,
my dad handing me a cup of hot chocolate to warm my chilly fingers on a crisp fall morning. Which is why, when the Norwegian I was dating during my first summer in Norway asked me if I wanted to go on a real camping adventure, I excitedly agreed. We loaded up his old-school backpack with essentials, including a fishing pole and firewood, and set off… or should I say up? After hours of climbing we finally reached the anticipated spot - a valley, surrounded on all sides by mountains. Strikingly beautiful, inaccessible, and remote. We had brought the fishing pole with us with the intention of catching our dinner, as the valley had two lakes that were supposedly overflowing with fish. Unfortunately for us, however, said lakes were still almost completely frozen solid and the fish had other priorities. Presumably staying warm, which deterred them from feasting on our tempting bait. We tried for many cold, long, shivering hours without luck. I don’t remember what we ate that night but it certainly wasn’t freshly caught fish. There was also a moment of slight panic when a dark shadow descended ominously upon us late that evening. We thought it was a big, bad wolf, but it actually turned out to be a tiny and curious deer, Although the experience was frightening and we went to bed slightly hungry, I am delighted to report that the overall venture was a success and no one was injured – plastic and disproportionately shaped, or otherwise.
There were also s’mores involved, which by default cancels out all calamities encountered throughout the trip. Perhaps, like me, you have experienced a disaster or two while camping. Possibly this has even deterred you from continuing to enjoy nature in such a hands-on way. For those who are looking for an outdoor escape with a bit more comfort and luxury, there are other options available. Camping in comfort is not an urban myth, and considering the delightful ‘green winter’ summer that we are experiencing here in Trondheim, staying dry and warm might not be the worst idea! You could camp in your car, join the German tourists by purchasing your very own RV; or even go ‘glamping’ in a lavo equipped with a fluffy bed, sheepskin rugs and even a roaring, indoor fireplace. Whichever method you choose, the important thing is to get outside of the city – and your comfort zone – to enjoy the beauty of Norway at a basic, fundamental level. Make a fire, attempt to catch a few fish for dinner, roast some marshmallows on a stick. Just be sure to keep your eyes out for foxes.

O’
Connor A Singer, a soul, her highs, her lows. It is a little too stunning to think about Ireland’s iconic singer Sinéad O’Connor playing one of Norway’s oldest and largest music festivals this year, her voice floating through Erkebispegården under the dusk of the mid-summer sky. Yes, ma’am! Sinéad is classic with over 30 years of stage experience and we’re lucky to have her presence under such special circumstances. Olavsfestdagene is a festival reminiscent of a Viking marketplace, having started in the 60s and morphing over the years into some 165,000 visitors watching some of the world’s biggest acts. Simply put, this is going to be an amazing concert sure to move even the youngest audience members. Sinéad O’Connor is a name that most are acquainted with, even those too young to realise. Her biggest hit, a cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2U” still gets a good deal of radio (and karaoke) play, 25 years later. Her pensive look is also a recognisable one, but it is her truly trademark shaved head that is iconic. She is a music trend-setter in many respects, so easily we forget how revolutionary this haircut was at the time of ‘the bigger, the better’ 90s poodle hair. She’s been a little less visible in the media lately, thankfully for her own benefit, but she’s back with a bang with her new album release: “I’m not bossy, I’m the boss.” “Well, originally I had a different title, which was one of the songs on the album (“The Vishnu Room”), but then in February the “Ban Bossy” campaign came about and I was really inspired by the campaign as a female boss, because the way the music industry works, it really makes a musical artist --male and female-- feel like we’re working for the people who are actually working for us. It’s very hard to be perceived as a boss. Behaving like a boss or wanting to be treated like one is not encouraged, you know? I could be wrong but I imagine that that’s exaggerated when you’re female. I’ve had issues around that a lot over the years. The irony is that musical artists have enormous public voices, but behind the scenes we’re voiceless, actually”. This tour is about her role as a songwriter. She first caught our attention because of her emotional outpouring in her work back in the 90s. For this reason (still slightly disappointing, but we respect her decision) she won’t be singing “Nothing Compares 2U” at Olavsfestdagene. Explaining, “the time has come for me to cease singing Nothing Compares 2U. The first principle of the manner in which I’m trained as a singer (Bel Canto) is we never sing a song we don’t emotionally identify with. After twenty-five years of singing it, nine months or so ago I finally ran out of anything I could use in order to bring some emotion to it”. For this and many other reasons, Sinéad O’Connor commands any artist’s respect. Identifying herself within music at an early age and even putting herself out there to the world before really understanding her identity. Hard gig. She has been a strong role model for many, which means sometimes being on the edge of revolution and willing to take a risk. She’s both strong and vulnerable at times…and her acts of personal opinion and ‘controversy’ only make her all the more inspirational. Highs and lows. She explains the path of the female musician as muddled: “there’s a weighing kind of overemphasis on sexuality, which disempowers music generally because it silences all the other voices. It makes music a very powerless force for changing the world,” Expectation of female musician’s identities and roles can be taxing. She is 47. A mother, a grand-mother. A part of music history, but her story isn’t over yet. Catch her musical story at Olavsfestdagene.

This is Trondheim’s nicest and probably most productive producer collective. It’s hyper-energetic and smart club music for the millennial age. I think that ‘Girlfriend’ is probably their most accessible yet! I’m too old to be dancing to this myself, but it’s great to see them connect with like-minded producers and crowds all over the world.
By now Broen is more of a Trondheim-via-Oslo band than locally rooted despite living here, this song was released last December - but who cares! Keep it coming. They’re bridging the city gap, excuse the bad pun, and will be relevant for a very long time to come. Plus, this song got a write-up in The Guardian, so there you go!

This guy went from Garageband tinkering to P3 Urørt and Trondheim Calling in just about no time at all, which was just around winter this year. A couple of months later he’s got this video out, slowmo’ing through Trondheim’s prime culture spot – Centrum Bowling— to the tune of a seriously catchy indie-psych-rock beat.
I just read the other day that this band wants the audience to thank them at their shows. Not the other way around. This is a perfect attitude for a garage rock band, I do say! Besides, they’ve already convinced cool underground cassette labels in the US to release their music.
Previously named Angelica’s Elegy, these guys have rebaptised themselves after the name of their debut record, Gold Celeste. Has a nice ring to it, eh? Channeling all the good sunny 60s/70s psych rock vibes into this new single doesn’t sound so bad either.

INTERVIEW WITH PEKKA STOKKE AGE: 43 ORIGIN: NORWEGIAN FARMLANDS How are you feeling? Tired and excited. Which is basically my ‘normal’ mode. Normal workday: short-circuiting electronics; setting stuff on fire; programming some generative content + lasers for an Indonesian gamelan freebag gig; doing paperwork for the studio; listening to Royksopp remixes. Normal day. What can we find in your studio? Some freshly roasted Chinese LED pixels strewn across the floor. A sensor rig that triggers generative graphics based on temperature, wind speed, and some twitter feeds. Plus, shelves and shelves of lights; sensors; laser diodes and drivers; power supplies; control boxes; LED equipment; video gear; some projectors; 100 miles of cable; flight cases; gig bags; MIDI controllers; paper; felt markers; signal converters; video switches; scalers; splitters; a toolbench; a hard hat for on-site installation/ building work. And a sofa + art books and books about light; shadow; storytelling; architecture and some philosophical studies of space and place.

THE LIST trd T HE F IFT H ISSUE
How has Trondheim impacted your artistic process? - Trondheim is small enough to build a good network quickly and the cheap rent in the squats/ alternative areas of Svartlamon allowed me to start small and build a career over time. The music conservatory has to be the best jazz/ music/ art education centre in the world and it keeps launching amazing people into space. It’s probably the leading institution for developing true artists, with mad skills and open minds, anywhere. To work with these people means having your mind expanded on a daily basis. I’m lucky enough to work with lots of them.
How has the city inspired you? I don’t hang much in the visual arts world in Trondheim. The music/ audiovisual world has always been my space. There is something about the massive will to communicate and the understanding of scale and space that I feel lacks in a lot of visual arts. All music is like Anish Kapoor. All music fills the space and invades it. I like large installations, not art that comes across as little , private, introverted experiments.
Where do we find light? In the winter there’s the golden strip to the south and then when turning north, the dark, white-tipped fjord and blue-grey range across the water. The white nights in May. Underwater, swimming or diving. Trondheim is 5,000 shades of beautiful grey. Make sure you enjoy the sickly orange-brown pall of the sodium-vapor streetlights before they disappear during the next few years.
Any upcoming installations? I’m in the process of creating a museum/ exhibition design. It raises a bunch of philosophical questions about how to tell a factual, real story through physical, historical objects. There’s also an installation in Ekebergparken. I’m doing some concerts this summer at Pstereo and Øya festival with Kristoffer Lo (from Highasakite) and Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. Next year will be filled with play of firework designs, lasers and choreography. Plus studio projects and lighting for urban spaces ++. I’m working with space and engagement; manipulation of room and moods.

Words: Laura Ann Morrison INTERVIEW WITH CARLOS ALBERTO CORREIA AGE: 25 ORIGIN: PORTUGAL How are you feeling? Excited for the future. For the bad and for the good. What can we find in your studio? A Norwegian and a Thai typewriter; laptop; books; a desk; lamp; slide projectors; slides; found things/ objects; aluminium; felt; plants. What brought you to Trondheim? How has Trondheim impacted your artistic process? I always fostered curiosity for the Scandinavian landscape and at the same time I was looking for a smaller place to study where I wouldn’t have so many distractions. This, and the International Programme of Fine Arts at KiT. The small body of students at the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art creates a really strong and pleasant environment to be in. So everything is intrinsically connected and I’m sure that has unconsciously had an influence in my practice as an author. Which Norwegian artist would you recognise as an inspiration? I don’t like to use other artists as sources of inspiration. I believe that there are other, more interesting sources for inspirations. Where is your next destination? Trondheim. It is a small city with some good opportunities, so I applied for a studio at LKV and if I get it, will be there for at least for one year. Notes to self? I try to keep in mind that the beauty of being creative shapes opportunity for creating completely new and unique things. Any Upcoming exhibitions? So far I have an exhibition in Levanger with LevArt but the date hasn’t been decided yet.

Yeaaah! Everyone’s favourite time of the year is finally here! Well, everyone excluding you die-hard skiers and snowboarders, but no worries you have the glaciers. Yes people, 64 glorious days of summer upon us, 64 days of cutting out of work early, or just not going altogether. Think countless days of uninterrupted sleeping-in minus the snooze-button (when you’re not at a festival and free from small kids). Sixty-four days of (hopefully) sun filled with camping, travel, slow-time, renovations, but best of all – festivals. There is literally so much happening in the region this summer that we had to organise it for you on a gant chart. Indeed, The List has taken away that last iota of burden from you and planned your summer. Will it be horse-back riding at Olavsfestdagene? Family picnic at Pstereo? Underground reggae at Støy på Landet? Eating yourself into a coma at Oi Trøndersk Matfestival? What about outdoor festival vibes with huge international bands at Pstereo – or all of the above? When we think of summer vacation for the most part it’s visions of airplanes, cottages and beach. But you don’t need to break the bank to enjoy your sunny days, there is a whole plethora of exciting things happening right in our very own backyard. There is so much going on, including lots of things that we have never even heard of before. For example, join in on a trip to live like a Viking out in nature while wearing Viking clothes and cooking by campfire. Yep, that’s a thing! And there are so many other totally awesome things to do, like listening to an electronic pop concert in a history museum that dates back to the 12th century. Who would have thought? Go ahead, start your summer. 20

Back to school, back to work and return to one of Trondheim’s hallmark events. In its 9th year running, Pstereo is gearing up to be the biggest and best yet! It’s no wonder that our very own ‘good times festival for the people’ won Norway’s festival of the year in 2014. Each year, this semester kickstarter collects over 20,000 people over a weekend of collective music-adornment, top atmosphere and old-school fun, set against the backdrop of a 1,000 year-old church. Pstereo brings you Norwegian and International top headliners, while showcasing those do-not-miss up-and-comers. This is the first year that Pstereo will be sold out in June, but don’t dismay because if you don’t manage to get your ticket in time (though it is highly recommended to do so), you can always join as one of 700+ volunteers.

Get to know Trondheim Vikinglag. Here is your chance to be one with nature and live out our roots. Like really. Members live in longhouses, tents and all the while in role-play. While the annual market in Trondheim is taking a break, we recommend a weekend trip up to beautiful Lofoten for their Viking market this August. Sign up as a Vikinglag member and go on joint trips, brew mjød, do lots of handywork crafts and even spend some time living in Viking tents fully clad in Viking threads, making all your food by campfire. This August Vikinglag will head over to Transylvania for a festival in the medieval Rasnov fortress. Activities are open to all, so become a member to join the trips.

EAT THE RICH
‘
“IT HAPPENS WHEN IT HAPPENS”
One of Trondheim’s most famous, yet anti-commercial neighbourhoods, Svartlamon, hosts this annual gathering of good old fashioned hardcore bands, and beer from recyclable cups. It is a shirtless, happy child community festival. Eat the Rich started as a response to Trondheim’s 1,000-year anniversary and a political rebellion against the city’s plans to demolish the historical houses at Svartlamon and turn it into an industrial space. Eat the Rich is a free, volunteer-run cultural festival at Svartlamon that is organised completely by grassroots resident initiatives. The festival boasts good music by local bands, food and drink, political activism and an all-round good atmosphere. The festival stands as a countermovement to the large, commercial festivals and organisations, and while exact dates are not planned, the festival tends to be the last weekend in August. General info can be found at Svartlamon.org Advertising for the festival is pretty much word of mouth, so keep your ears to the pavement.

The first Støy På Landet (‘noise in countryside’) festival was held in a barn outside of Trondheim in the late 1970’s, before taking an extended sabbatical of three decades. Then in 2006 one of the re-forming members bought a farm in Selbu and the festival found a new home for three years. From 2010 it’s been an ambulating affair, occupying other farms, an abandoned school and various deep woods. In July 2015 SPL found itself in Nevra, Malvik. There is no entrance fee and no infrastructure.
Guests and artists have to find their way to the site from Hommelvik, utilising lift-share, taxis and self-driven initiative. There’s no accommodation provided and no sales on site (other than some records and merchandise), so everyone needs to bring food, drink, tents and other amenities. And in the spirit of Burning Man, sharing and fair trade is encouraged. “SPL ’s musical focus is noise and experimental, in the broadest sense of the word,” the organisers explained to The List. “The ideology has moved more and more towards a purist Do-It-Yourself approach. We pick a spot, set up a stage from recycled/abandoned trash, and provide a generator and a PA system. The artists and audience are the real organisers.” 1 7 - 1 8 J U LY Car pooling from Hommelvik train station Friday July 17 18:00, or fixed price of 150 NOK per person with Malvik Taxi. The beer-festival is the only one of its kind where the guest can buy speciality food dishes with their beer. Handy for soaking up the lashings of IPA and brown ale on offer. The Opera “Olav Engelbrektsson” will run for the 21st time this summer, with première on August 6, at Steinvikholm Castle. If you are not familiar with recent Norwegian history you would think Olav Engelbrektsson is not such a positive persona, especially one that deserves to have his own opera. His initial bad reputation and blame for promoting the Catholic Church at the expense of Norwegian independence lasted for quite some time, but it was disproven by later historians (Absalon Taranger in 1917, Sverre Steen in 1935 and Lars Hamre in 1998). Today we celebrate his existence and work with a grand opera and in many other ways as well.
Olav Engelbrektsson Opera recreates the power game over Archbishop Olav’s throne and the most important event in Norwegian history! While Danish domination is growing ever so quickly, a tragic love affair falls victim to the political games, and brave Olav chooses armed resistance to defend the country’s independence! Watch as this historic event unveils right in front of you in the place where Olav himself started the construction of its defences - Steinvikholm Castle! During the last 450 years the castle ruins have been a testament to one of the most important moments in Norwegian history; The dramatic battle of power over the county’s political and religious throne with Archbishop Olav Engelbrektsson as the main character.
We are all very aware of the ‘No loud music after 11’ rule, but don’t worry. KlubbPstereo is here to save the day (or night).

Trondheim tattoo convention is for everyone who loves tattoos and great artwork! It is Norway’s oldest existing convention, arranged for the 15th time this year, we’ll see artists from places as far away as Poland, Italy and Netherlands coming to town to show off their tatts. A total of 35 artists will be available to the audience, as well as on-stage entertainment. Some artists also deal in piercings, so start your planning. One of the arrangers, Morten “Diesel” Dahl, had this to say: “There will be around 30 top class tattoo artist from many countries available for the audience Dahl adds: “The audience is invited to compete for best tattoo in nine different classes”. They can join in with their existing tattoo and/or join in with tattoos they have had done right there at the convention”.
Trondheim’s Bastard festival represents a mix of theatre and performance arts which tries to showcase Nordic and up-and-coming performers, while still being an international festival. Trondheim’s Bastard festival has existed more or less since 1990, says Per Ananiassen, the current Creative Director. “It’s the biggest Performing Arts festival in mid-Norway, and deals mainly with contemporary art”. “Over time it has evolved into more or less full-format performances and evening programs. However, it also deals with all kinds of hybrid performances, like crossovers between theatre, performance, art, dance and even striptease. But it isn’t so much about showmanship as it is about serious art.” The festival tends to feature quite a lot of Norwegian artists, but some of them, like Mette Edvardsen, Heine Avdal

and Tale Dolven, also have successful international careers. “It’s called Bastard because we like the playful, but also the kind, while trying to be a little bit dangerous at the same time. The Norwegian word “bastard” means a mix of two different races.” This year, Per says, the festival intends to surprise people, rather than shock them. He points out that the shock effect wears out after a while; “There’s a limit to how often people can be shocked by performers being naked on stage, showing their vagina or having faeces on stage.”
“This festival has always been about both performance and theatre. The festival was never about dramatic theatre, but more about theatre that combines performance with dramatization.” If any of this sounds interesting, come to Avant Garden theatre in Olav Trygvassons gate 5 from August 31 August - September 5. 31 A U G U S T - 5 S E P T E M B E R Avant garden, Olav Trygvassons gate 5 Price: TBA
The focus of the festival is very much on the audience and its self-awareness - it’s a strategy for engaging itself in a performance, and not being passive and indifferent. The festival tries provoking spectators into thinking “why am I so indifferent to this?”
