It’s that time of year again when our city doubles in size and everyone feels an expectant ’fresh start’ vibe that our students exude with the coming semesterstart. Whether you are tied to the city’s Universities, or just like to see some youthful faces on the streets, everyone reaps the benefits when the students come home. No one can dispute that Trondheim is Norway’s best student city –and there has been a lot of buzz lately that we are in fact THE best city for studies in Scandinavia (or at least, on the way there). We got the parks, the outdoor space, the all-night parties, the music events, a vibrant art scene, worldclass sports events, jobs galore and an awesome innovation and startup scene. Yep, we got you. This issue is dedicated to student and outdoor life. Or, even the two combined – for all you students on a tight budget, take a look at our foraging for free food article that guides you through Bymarka’s off-beaten paths to all the hidden patches of berries and mushrooms. Speaking of which, we are happy to welcome our new partners, Visit Trondheim, who are experts of the outdoors in their own right. We look forward to a fruitful collaboration with Visit Trondheim in the coming years. New ideas and events come hand-in-hand in with the return of student-life. Take a moment to get acquainted with some of our new residents at any of the 400+ events taking place in September and October. Students mean new business. With over 500 new companies having established themselves over the last two years, we’re bound to start seeing some of Trondheim’s notorious (but sometimes hidden) innovation. DIGS has a fresh new face to their cafe bringing you daily events, offering more meeting places for our young startups. With Work-Work set to open in the fall, students and Trondheim residents alike will be able to drink a beer and test out the city’s newest homegrown video games. NTNU is inevitably part of the foundation of it all, as well as being host to some incredible cultural events. UKA kicks off on the 1st day of October, with over three weeks of events, gigs and business presentations. Not to overlook an amazing headliner, The Prodigy, who grace Trondheim with their presence for the first time since 1997. The List happily welcomes NTNU as our other new partner!

Exercising the right Words: Snorre Valen

O

f all the activities I take part in as an elected official, the local elections are the most fun. By far. Since I’m not a candidate myself, I get to do all the things that are usually the privilege of the local activists. Committee meetings and late nights at the office, not to mention the strict dress code of the parliament, is replaced by local stands, home parties, local media, and not least, getting to live in Trondheim for a longer stint than a weekend. The local parties’ stands in Kongens Gate are at the very heart of the local campaigns in Trondheim. Here you get to meet the local candidates every day, and in addition to large amounts of coffee, pastries, caramels, balloons, bottle openers and t-shirts, they also offer you the chance to discuss important local matters. A lot of locals take up the offer. I spend a lot of time at my party’s stand myself, and honestly a lot of the questions and discussions that are brought up are far more interesting and informative than the usual in-fighting in televised debates between national MPs. The most entertaining thing, though, and although it won’t affect our local polls, is meeting foreign tourists who happen to stumble upon the avenue of colourful campaign booths while on their way to Nidarosdomen, Bybrua or the local library. Some of them, like the British, are unable to cope with the sheer amount of parties running for local office, as used as they are to a traditionally two-party system. An Italian couple from the left wing-dominated city of Bologna once toured all the booths and then exclaimed their pure joy to me over counting “four socialist parties, and no fascists!”. Germans, suprisingly up-to-date on Norwegian politics, compare our calm and knowledgeable conservative prime minister Erna Solberg to Angela Merkel. Americans take home our flyers as souvenirs. A few days ago, a couple of American tourists brought with them a fine collection of flyers from my own Socialist Left Party, with photos of our vice mayor Knut Fagerbakke. “Now we can have a real socialist on our fridge door,” they said, curious that “he looks so kind!” As Bernie Sanders’ ratings continue to rise

across the political spectrum in the US, I wonder if the word ‘socialist’ will lose some of its exotic vibe across the pond. What I don’t see much of during these campaigning weeks, though, are foreign students and workers and I wish I met more of them. Where are you guys? Come to Kongens Gate for some coffee and a chat! I suspect that a lot of people are unaware that they have the right to participate in the elections here in Trondheim. If you have stayed here for three years, you get to vote in the local elections, regardless of nationality. Nordic citizens can vote almost immediately. We are a city of so many nationalities, yet so little of our public discussion here reflects the fact that our city is a small, international community. Our culture, our economy, our arts, our technology and businesses gain tremendously from the strong international presence. We are not good enough to give you Trondheim foreigners a voice in return. Besides, it is great fun. A lot can be said about Norwegian politics, but there are some definitive advantages. First, we have a lot of parties. Whether pensioners’ rights, the labour movement, tax relief, more tax relief than the former, the abolishment of monarchy, or (for some reason) closing and sealing the borders is your thing, we have a party for you. Second, we are relatively scandal-free. Relatively. But on a more serious note, we have a high level of trust in each other. The Norwegian debates can be quite agitated, but across all disagreement is a fundamental trust in our democratic system. Lately, I see signs that this trust is questioned by certain political movements’ over-amplified and quite paranaoid warnings against a multicultural Norway, as our Norwegian culture supposedly whithers away at the hands of ‘the immigrants’. Ironically, I think a stronger immigrant and foreigner presence in our democracy and our public discussion might be just the thing to prove the naysayers wrong. So, dear foreign student, immigrant or refugee: the next time you walk by the circus of political booths downtown, stop by and have a chat. Ask us questions and hold us responsible. It’s your city too.

THE MILLION DOLL AR QUES TION How to get more women in tech and innovation?

Trondheim is becoming known for its vibrant tech and innovation ecosystem.Their first grassroots innovation week, ‘Trondheim Playground’ took place during the last week of August. While there, I visited Innovator, an Oscar-like event for entrepreneurs in the Trondheim area. I got to be a part of the jury for ‘Young Innovation’ award, which has a goal of supporting female researchers and entrepreneurs under the age of 40.

Words: Maria Amelie

It was Nuria Espallargas, NTNU’s all-time youngest professor and co-founder of Seram Coatings, who took home the award with amazing merit. She is a fantastic, world-famous researcher. This year there were over 25 strong candidates nominated for the ‘Young Innovation’ prize, a step up from the five nominations in its first year in 2006. It was a truly difficult task to choose a winner. Some of the candidates nominated themselves, which is a good thing because self-promotion is often untypical in both Norwegian culture and for women in general. There were of course men that nominated their female colleagues, or those they mentor. Which is also a good thing, because nobody succeeds in a vacuum without any help. Despite all this positivity, there is still no reason to celebrate gender-equality in science and technology. Not yet. It is still the case that few girls choose STEM-education; not many women work with technology; and there is pretty much a lack of female tech-entrepreneurs in Norway —and worldwide. A recent study from TNS Gallup and ODA-network for Norwegian women in IT reveals that only one in five of those working in IT are women. Only 10% of developers are women. A study from the Center for Talent Innovation shows that U.S. women working in science, engineering and tech fields are 45% more likely than their male peers to leave the industry within a year. 80% of them say they love their work, but they report experiencing too many barriers to reaching to the top. So, the million dollar question is: how can we change this? I think the answer can be found in the story of Ada Lovelace. She was born in 1915 and was daughter to the famous poet Lord Byron. He was famous, but she became famous mostly due to her math and informatics research. Ada is considered to be the first computer programmer. Her notes on the Analytical Engine are recognised as the first algorithm intended to be carried out by a machine. The

12

THE LI ST trd T HE SIXT H ISSUE

programming language ‘Ada’ happens to be named after her. Who knows, maybe without her research, it would have taken us a lot longer to be where we are today with our iphones, java and lol cats. So how did she manage to achieve all this in a time when women were not even allowed to study at Universities? The answer is; her mother was interested in mathematics. Several mathematicians turored young Ada from an early age. Contemporary research shows that children notice their parents’ math-anxieties. It could be one of the causes for why, especially girls early on, foster a negative relationship to math. Ada was lucky to have a mother with a passion for math. She continued with her studies even after marriage. Her mentor, the researcher Mary Sommerville, introduced her to the famous math professor, Charles Babbage. They became friends, and colleagues, and then they changed the course of history in computer programming. Ada had a mentor, network and means that helped her on her way to change the world. This is as equally relevant in 2015 as it was in 1840. The Center for Talent Innovation states that 86% of US women don’t have sponsors, someone who can advocate on their behalf and open doors for them. Many technology companies have understood this. One worth mentioning in Norway is Evry, an IT company who has on average a 23% female employee rate and 25% female leadership, compared to the 19% average in IT. This is a step, but not enough. They have however come a long way working on equality challenges by focusing on networks and mentors for their female employees. It is also ‘the little things’ on their radar – like how many women are on stage during their events, and the discourse about women in the company, and in job advertisements. They collaborate with ‘Operasjon Dagsverk’ and invite young girls from high school to network and learn more about what it is like to work in an IT-company. I once interviewed a female professor in diversity and business. I asked her the same question: how do we entice more female employees and leaders into work culture? I had my pen ready to note a long list of tips, but she only said one thing: “Just hire women. Just hire them. This is how you can get more female employees and leaders. If there are not enough women who apply for your jobs, then go out and find them. Hire those who do not have all the experience you require, and teach them. If you really mean that you want to increase gender diversity – then don’t just talk about it, do something about it.” The million dollar answer: a little less conversation, a little more action please.

Foraging for Food

Words: Kyle McClenahan Photos: June Karlsen

Maybe you’ve seen them out in the wilds, men and women bent over, eyes to the ground, wandering in circles with no clear purpose to the random observer. Norway is a land of excess for the senses, but another, ostensibly secret bounty waits around every turn. To the uninitiated, the woods and wildernesses of Norway can seem impenetrable, overwhelming, and even barren. To the trained forager, however, Norway reveals a trove of possibility, and the parks and woodlands around Trondheim are some of the finest places for novices and experts alike to hunt their culinary treasures. From Britain to Bohemia, and the Baltic states to the Russian heartland, traditions of foraging for food go back as far as civilization itself. The first agricultural societies were likely predicated on their ability to supplement grown foods with foraging. My own

14

THE LIST trd T HE SIXT H ISSUE

history of foraging goes back two generations to my grandparents as they made their way out of the European heartland to America, literally surviving off of their knowledge along the way. Flash-forward to my childhood, and our summer outings often involved hunts for the highly prized porcini (steinsopp), a meaty forest mushroom of the Boletus family. We would take our hauls home, eat fresh mushrooms for weeks, and then dry the rest. It was not only a way to connect to my family history, but also a way to engage a culture that is growing in popularity around the world. When I consider what most connects my new home in Norway to the home I’ve left

behind, it’s food, and the rite of foraging plays the starring role. Upon moving to Trondheim, I was overwhelmed by the diversity of mushrooms available just outside of town. Bymarka may be best known for its picturesque hiking and skiing trails, but when I think of our local wonderland, my mind goes straight to my stomach. Indeed, a single afternoon hike from the parking lot below the Granåsen ski jump can result in not just porcini mushrooms, but morels (morkler), and chanterelles (kantereller). But that’s just the beginning, as the forests and shrub-covered hillsides are also teeming with edible berries, wild onions, and flowers. Other than the prolific blueberry (blåbær), it is often possible to find raspberries (bringebær), cranberries (tranebær), and the exotic cloudberry (molte) among others. My personal favourite edible flower is fireweed (geitrams), which can be seen not

From Left: Mushroom: Understanding the physiological characteristics that distinguishes edible mushrooms from unsafe look-alikes is an important tool when foraging. Raspberry: An early-season raspberry may look small, but often packs more concentrated sugars - anWWd flavour. Flowers: The flowers of fireweed (geitrams) are slightly sweet, slightly bitter, and are as easy to find as they are versatile for cooking. Yum!

only in Bymarka, but also around the city itself, with its iconic towering stalks of richly hued, pink flowers. From sweetening salads with an aesthetic touch, to making ice cream as refreshing as summer itself, fireweed may very well be the most readily accessible delicacy in all of Norway. If you prefer a little tang to your meal, both wild garlic (ramsløk) and wild onion (villøk) are traditional to Nordic cuisine and readily discoverable. Throw in those freshly plucked mushrooms, and whatever the meal - pasta, risotto, salad, or stew - you’ll be enjoying a forest-to-table culinary experience enriching beyond measure. Not only will the natural serenity of this ‘shopping’ trip elevate your senses, it will also provide an inexpensive, gourmet meal. Many of the above delicacies are just that, highly prized, and they command respectively high prices at the market. As a student, there is no better way than a hike in the park to supplement your budget with something delectable. With your newfound skills you will be able to leave those receipts behind, all while diving stomach-first into a world of personal enrichment and gastronomic tradition. If you’re really ambitious, you can even supplement your income by selling mushrooms like the porcini to restaurants eager to have them on the menu. Now that sounds delicious! There is however a catch, as nothing so wonderful in life comes easily, and the barrier to entry for foraging can seem daunting to say the least. Just as the forest is a living, edible feast, it too holds the potential to fool the untrained into taking home the wrong, often-dangerous species. Dangerous species mimic many of the aforementioned ones, and something that looks to be safe is oftentimes not. No matter how skilled the hunter, there must always be a certainty with which wild species are taken home, and how they are cooked. Luckily for those ready and willing to give foraging a try, there are a wealth of resources available both online and in person to help

aid in the discovery of the perfect meal. Many guides have been professionally crafted and tailored specifically for those out there wishing to get their feet in the forest and their meal from the ground. There exists much useful information for the identification and harvesting of wild, edible plants, berries and mushrooms. Both Visit Norway and Helse Norge (links at end of article) provide a good starting point for online research. One of the best resources is of course the local Trondheim Turistforening, so I thought I’d pay them a visit. I met with the lovely Aasta Folkvik, who was equally excited for the coming weeks of picking in Bymarka and Estenstadmarka. Not only is it high time for finding chanterelles said Aasta, but raspberries are starting to appear. Both mushrooms and berries should be plentiful this year due to the abundance of rain in early summer. She recommended that any eager pickers visit Norway’s mushroom and useful plant association (Norges sopp- og nyttevekstforbund) online, where it is possible to book day hikes with professional foragers. If you’re not sure where to begin, UT.no provides interactive hiking maps over the whole country. Otherwise, any trail is a great place to start, as different species grow in the different environments you’ll find along the way. With all of this talk of foraging, it was impossible not to go out ourselves, so we at The List decided to gå på tur! We hiked and we bushwhacked, and met an order of magnitude more bugs than edibles. There were a host of blueberries and a handful of young raspberries to fuel our search. As luck would have it, we were not graced with any good mushrooms this time around, but we found a few salad notables including red clover and fireweed. Back at the trailhead besides Granåsen ski jump, our mid-August excursion had proved less than fruitful. Such is the life of the hunter, and it goes to show that even with a passion for plucking amidst the abundances of nature, it

can take more luck than knowledge to come home with a harvest. At the end of the day though, foraging is more than just a search for edible communion, it is itself a communion with the nature we are intrinsically tied to. Despite the ease at which we fill our baskets at the market today, we must remember this ritual of foraging as the history and culture of our species for many millennia. Foraging unites us with our pasts, connects us to the diverse nature around us in Trondheim, and fills our plates and homes with the modern version of a joyous tradition. So get informed, get out there, and take advantage of all the beauty this beautiful region has to offer. Your stomach is waiting!

MIKAEL ANDRE JACOBSSON AGE: 25 ORIGIN: NORWEGIAN/ SWEDISH How are you feeling? - Very ambivalent and moody lately, but mostly eager to see what’s next. At the same time trying to acknowledge what I’ve consumed (mentally), where I am and where to head next. But right now I’m quite upset because WARNER BROS is suing me, or was it 20th Century Fox? It’s ruining me. What can we find in your studio? - At the moment, all of my belongings, from undies to sculptures. I never stay too long at the same place; it’s probably because of my restlessness and affection for travelling new places. I always feel like I’m in the middle of something, heading towards something; an adventure, at least that’s how I like to imagine it. Except from my belongings, and there isn’t much, you will see some decayed materials. Everything that I bring to the studio has some visible history to it; it has to have a certain quality. Except from all that stuff again, you’ll find paint, brushes, oils, spray cans, paper, linen, cotton, dead birds, sculptures, a swede, a model, wood, music, high ceiling, pillars, concrete floor, brick walls, big dirty

windows, mess, order and my new paintings. How has Trondheim impacted your artistic process? - First of all I was a student at KIT until this summer, so Trondheim has had all to do with my practice the last three years. First year was a lot of soul-searching within my work and being. I was working on the idea ‘nothingness’ which still kind of sticks somehow. I think it’s a fundamental feeling for all humans, but rather repressed or avoided. Anyway, it was a tough task when you eventually always end up with something. Second year was a scandalous year, which was consisted of collaboration with Sjur Aas. He thought me a lot, very much dada-like without realizing it himself. The final year at KIT we ended up distressed by the school. Something like 12 students lost their studios, the workshop was closed for months, some good professors went away. Most of all it felt like the school was heading towards one kind of art form instead of embracing a variety. Also this international masters programme took a lot of the resources at school, and created some kind of barrier between

the students at the bachelor programme and the master’s programme. It was much more fun when I started, where we had “Den Gode Samtale”, a smaller kitchen with good conversations and high quality beverage. Also that place was taken away from us. So a fellow student and I fled school the final year and went to Berlin. Working from an apartment there, pending back and forth between Germany and Norway, we still managed to get our bachelor degree in art. I’m still in Berlin though. What material is your favourite? And why? - I’ve come to find paint as my main tool. This is of its individual expression or way of converse with the conscious and unconscious, both to oneself and others; it touches something mystical and spiritual. Painting has such endless depths that one needs to narrow it down to get anything at all. I try to force myself to put up boundaries, and hence get a deeper knowledge. The time one endures towards the ‘one painting’,W at this moment; this painting, creates the space for the always changing. It can’t get worse than the ones before, that’s a relief. Also oil on linen is so, so sexy.

Then came the summer heat, afterwards. Now my attention is focusing on work. What can we find in your studio? - Mainly chaos. Quantities of wood in all variables, threads and remnants of past projects. I belong to those who find it more stimulating with a quantity of mess rather than order and regret my every attempt to clean up. Where wood has become wood. The International Student’s Guide to Trondheim 22

THE LI ST trd T HE SIXT H ISSUE

Words: Anders Påsche

Trondheim is considered by most to be Norway’s best student city, with recently strengthened aspirations to become the best among all of the Nordic countries. With its friendly citizens, astonishing amount of spare time activities, high amount of recreational parks, and wonderful view over the fjord of Trondheim, falling in love with the city and its surrounding nature is way too easy. If you, like many others, have felt strangely attracted to the concept of a city consisting of thousands of enthusiastic, young and like-minded people, with a vast area of forests, mountains and the sea surrounding it, then perhaps moving here to study has already crossed your mind. When it does, and you’re wondering what everyday life is like here, or if you’ve already decided to move - this guide should provide you with some valuable insights into student culture and some simple tips and tricks for living here.

AtB - Or “A to B”, is the main transport provider in Trondheim. Learning the bus routes and getting either a t:card or downloading the app Mobillett on your mobile device should be one of your first priorities when arriving the town. Having either of these lets you travel by bus, boat, and the city tram, which takes you to the doorstop of one of the best places to go hiking...

A

B

Bymarka - Where you’ll be once you’ve stepped out of the aforementioned tram. The recreation ground just West of Trondheim is considered one of the city’s biggest outdoor gems, both for students and for the locals. The cabin called Studenterhytta is run by the student organization NTNUi, and is open for all students. It features showers, a dining area, a larger hangout room, and even a sauna. Getting there the first time could perhaps be easier by taking the bus Hyttebussen, and if you’ve decided to become a NTNUi member, the bus is free!

City Bikes - Using a bike in Trondheim is by far the best way to travel. From May through October, the city of Trondheim has approximately 200 city bikes available for tourists and citizens. The bike racks are spread out in a triangle, from NTNU Gløshaugen to Ila and the train station. With a yearly subscription of NOK 100,-, you can borrow a bike from the rack between the hours 6 a.m. to 12 midnight. The only downside is that you have to return the bike within three hours of use, as to avoid hogging behaviour. Fortunately, you can return them at any rack, and if there aren’t any around who seems desperate for that one bike, just borrow it once more!

C

D

Discounts - As a student, you’re always looking for ways to minimize your costs. Luckily, the entire city is composed of over 15 percent students. That means every single store in the city will try to offer discounts to students in particular, and make you go to their store instead of someone else’s. The best way to take advantage of this is asking. No one gets offended if you ask “Do you have a discount for students?”, as the store cashiers in this city typically answers “Yes!”. You can also find special discounts in goodie bags, which you’ll be reading more about soon.

E

El-cycle - Now that we’ve established that having access to a bike in Trondheim is a huge benefit, how about ones running on battery power? The El-cycle-shop in Lade is run by two electronics students from the University College in Sør-Trøndelag. They’ve specialised in attaching new and powerful batteries to old bikes, making them run on electricity. With funding from Kickstarter-campaigns, they are now trying to improve upon their batteries and become the leading providers for batteries in Norway, whether it be for el-cycles, cabins, or boats.

F

Friluftsliv - Outdoor life. If there’s something Norwegians are good at, it’s outdoor recreation. 2015 has also been named the Outdoor Recreation Year to celebrate our intense need to feel in contact with nature, and wanderlust. That means organizations are doing something extra to set the premises for wanderlusting travellers this year. As is the city of Trondheim, offering several places to participate in activities like swimming, hiking, climbing, ice skating, skiing, and ball play. If you wish to try out ice skating, look for these play areas. Most of them are covered in ice during the winter to give habitants the joy of skating close to home.

G

Goodie bags - Free stuff is great when you’re living on a budget. No matter the campus you’ve started your studies on, a number of organizations will be eager to give you their promotional merchandise bundled with food, condoms, a school calendar, candy and other more or less useful stuff. Stands are a very common sight at the start of each school year or when walking through choke points like “Stripa” at NTNU Gløshaugen or “Gata” at NTNU Dragvoll. Oftentimes they will be offering free coffee or waffles if you don’t mind listening to them talk about their organization for a few minutes.

J

H

Housing - Since you’re reading this, you’ve probably already found a place to live in the city or its outskirts. But if you’re still looking for a suitable shelter, or decide you want to move later during your stay here, Trondheim offers quite a few options when deciding where to move in. The Student Welfare Organization in Trondheim (SiT) offers cheap housing in one of their many student villages. About 20 percent of students in Trondheim have accommodation through SiT. If you weren’t able to get housing through SiT, then the private market also offers plenty of housing alternatives. Just remember to be a tad more cautious when you’re looking to rent from private individuals, as not all of them are as serious about student welfare as SiT is.

IKEA - As much as you want to avoid shopping here in August because of the massive influx of students wishing to do the same, this is certainly the best place to get your furniture when moving in. IKEA is situated in Leangen, a short bus drive away from the city. Here, you’ll be able to see and try out furniture you’re interested in. And when you’ve decided to bring something home, everything is flat packaged for convenient transportation and easy to assemble if you’ve had some prior experience with Lego.

I

Julemarked - The Christmas Market in Trondheim takes place at the market square for ten days in December every year. If you wish to experience local customs and the warm, fuzzy feeling of Christmas celebration you’ve seen in the movies, a trip downtown during these days is very recommended. Concerts and theatres help raise money for charity programs, and local food and articles you won’t find anywhere else are sold at the various stands from smiling old men and ladies. You’re almost guaranteed to find the true Christmas spirit while being there! 24

K

Kjærestegaranti - Or “love guarantee” in Norwegian. This was promised by StudiebyEN, a collaboration project between SiT, the municipality of Trondheim and The Welfare Council. According to them, if you meet some minimum criteria, like taking care of your hygiene and being nice to other people, you’re guaranteed to get a girl- or boyfriend while staying here. That is, if you’re also motivated to find someone to be in a relationship with!

L

Legal Help - Established by students in law school, Jushjelpa (english: law helpers) offer free consultation and can assist in law disputes. If you feel badly treated by your landlord and are unsure if you can do anything about it, contact this organization. They will do their utmost to help you.

M

Mazemap - Getting around in Trondheim city is super easy with applications like Google Maps and other travel and map software. Finding your way in and around campus, however, is a whole other deal. With several large and complex buildings, and more or less cryptic conventions for naming rooms, getting to your destination could prove problematic if you’re on your own or in a group with the same lousy navigation skills. Fortunately, some geniuses at NTNU have lost their way one too many times, and thus decided to make an app that shows you indoor maps, complete with room names and customizable path making. No more running late to classes because you couldn’t find your way!

NTNUi - With around 12,000 members and more than 50 different sports represented, this is the largest sports club in Norway. Officially connected to NTNU and co- perating tightly with SiT, getting a membership here is much cheaper for students than memberships at any other fitness centres. Their facilities are located at Dragvoll, Gløshaugen, Dronning Mauds Minne Høgskole and Solsiden, and are free to use at any time with a membership. Apart from the usual gym rooms, Dragvoll also has an indoor climbing hall and three very popular squash courts. A list of the different types of sports clubs you can join is found on Ntnui.no, or check out some of its members on pages 18-19.

N

O

Orientation - As previously stated, getting around in Trondheim is super easy with digital help. You should still memorize some of the district names, like Lade, Tiller, Ila, and Byåsen. Knowing them will help you when searching for a bus, telling your friends where to find that awesome park to go barbecuing, or asking a local for specific directions when Google Maps is no good. During Fadderperioden (the first two weeks of school), the first year students are taken on tours and taught where to find the most important locations. They also go partying everyday and show up in togas and other weird costumes, yet the local community expect and tolerate it each year as a normal part of the fall in Trondheim.

P

Pirbadet - In the transition between sea and land, just north of the train station, you’ll find Pirbadet. It’s both Norway’s largest, and most visited, indoor water park with 360,000 annual visits. With opening hours every day, a variety of swimming and fitness activities, and a total water surface of 2,529 m2, getting the motivation to go here shouldn’t be too hard. It’s even funnier if you’re able to convince some friends to go with you and try out their water slides! If swimming happens to be your favourite fitness activity, you’ll notice Pirbadet also has student discounts when you purchase semester cards.

Q

Quiz nights - Assemble a team and try out one of the many quiz nights arranged by bars and restaurants in the city. It’s a great way to hang out with friends and have some fun without just drinking alcoholics!

R

Running routes - Whatever terrain you wish to run on, Trondheim offers something for everyone. If Bymarka is a bit too far away, there are a number of running routes near the Nidelven river. You’ll notice the locals being very enthusiastic about running outdoors. If you’re walking in one of the more popular running routes, chances are you’ll be passed by a jogger every minute or so.

U

UKA - Every other year, volunteer students from Trondheim arrange the largest cultural festival in Norway. And in 2015, UKA is being held for the 48th time! Even though “UKA” directly translates to “the week”, this festival takes place during the course of 23 whole days. This year’s program features concerts with famous artists like Mew, The Prodigy, Lemaitre, OnklP and Major Lazer; two Freestyle Motocross (FMX) shows, and lots of seminars arranged by some of Norway’s top companies. Everything is open for anyone, including both students and the locals, but if you’re planning on attending some of the biggest events you better get your tickets fast. They tend to sell out within an hour after being put up!

S

Student society - Have you noticed that awkwardly-looking, round and red building near the Elgeseter bridge? That’s Samfundet, an entire labyrinth of bars, concert stages, night clubs, a restaurant, a library, and even its own film club. Everything is run by approximately 1250 students, voluntarily working to give each other and everyone else a great place to hang out for every occasion. Samfundet is open to both locals and students, but students can get a 1-,3- or 5-year membership to enjoy no entrance fees and discounts on beer during the membership period.

Tak over hodet - If you have been unable to find yourself a place to live in time for semester start in Trondheim, don’t panic. This happens to a fair amount of students every year. If you’re one of them this year, or you know someone who is, go to Scandic Lerkendal and ask for representatives for Tak Over Hodet (Roof over your Head). They will provide you with a hotel room for NOK 295,- per night, which includes bedding, breakfast and WiFi. It might not be as cheap as staying with a friend or sleeping in the woods, but it’s a comfy alternative until you’ve found a more permanent solution.

T

V

Vocabulary - If you’re new to Norway, I bet you’ve already encountered a ton of words you don’t understand. Don’t worry, you won’t have to learn the whole language, most of the curriculum is available in english. But learning a few words, like “vei” (road) or “takk” (thanks) might prove useful when up and about in the city and in social situations. If you’ve already mastered a few words, the next step should be to properly identify dialect words. The region of Trondheim has some extremely weird words and sayings. Like “itj færra nålles”, which is a comically meant plea to behave properly, often said before going to an event.

W

Weather - Bright sun one minute and full storm the other is not uncommon in Trondheim. There is a reason every student in town wears something called an allværsjakke, which directly translated means ‘every weather’s jacket’. Be prepared when venturing outside for longer periods of time! You should also prepare yourself somewhat for winter. Invest in warmer clothes, specifically the ones made from pure wool. You don’t want to catch a cold during exams!

X

Xenophobia - Norwegians have a tendency to act a bit reserved when in public spaces, and maybe more so when in contact with someone from a strange culture or a faraway land. We’re used to living by ourselves between mountains and fjords, and you’ll notice the common Norwegian thriving in his or her own personal space. Now, this doesn’t mean Norwegians hate foreigners, we’re just as reserved when it comes to people from the opposite side of the mountain we live by. So when a Norwegian is distancing him- or herself from you, chances are he/ she is more afraid you’ll invade his/her personal space than being purposely hateful. Give the person some space and approach slowly, and they won’t feel threatened!

Y

Youth Hostel - If you’re getting visits from another country, while also staying at the tiniest room imaginable, referring them to Trondheim Youth Hostel could be a good idea. With prices starting from NOK 300,- per night, having visitors shouldn’t become too costly. During summer, when Studentersamfundet close up their regular business, it is converted into Trondheim Interrail Centre to provide housing for Interrail travelers and others in need of a cheap place to stay.

Z

Zealous - What you need to be if you’re planning on attending every lecture, do every rehearsal and pass your exams at the same time as you’re having the time of your life being a student!

Ø

Øl - If you haven’t learned this word by now, chances are you’ve heard it or read about it a fair amount. It’s the Norwegian word for beer, and finding places to get served cheaply is on every new student’s to-do-list. Samfundet has some of the cheapest beer available, especially if you’re a member already. But do step outside of the comfortable student stomping grounds and mix with the locals by going other places. Trondheim Microbrewery, Mormors and Den Gode Nabo each have their own special atmosphere worth exploring.

Å

Åpningstider - Which in English means opening hours. Be sure to check and memorize some important opening hours, like Vinmonopolet, your closest grocery stores, campus, public services, and everything else you need to visit on a regular basis. Only a selected few grocery stores are open during Sundays, and locating these will prove beneficial in the long run.

Æ

Ærlighet - The Norwegian word for honesty. Your typical Norwegian is incredibly trustworthy, and you can depend on them upholding their promises. If you happen to lose something, most of us will deliver the lost property to the police for safekeeping, or contact you directly. Just don’t be naive and leave your valuables in the care of a complete stranger. Thefts happen here too, if you show the bad ones you’re an easy prey!

And there you have it - the ultimate guide for new and active students in Trondheim. I hope you’ve become slightly more enlightened when it comes to living in this wonderful city than you were at the beginning. Be sure to discover new locations and meet new people for all the various activities you enjoy doing or are interested in trying out. There is so much Trondheim has to offer anyone who dares seek it out. And since you’re lucky enough to be here during the Outdoor Recreation Year, I strongly recommend trying to understand the Norwegian connection to nature. How, you ask? The best way - learning by doing. My hopes are that you’ll become a part of and thrive in the tight-knit student society existing here, and enjoy your time as a student as much as I have done so far. I wish you all the best while living in Trondheim, even if you’re staying here for a week, one year, or, perhaps, the rest of your life. T H E L I ST t rd TH E S IXTH ISS UE

Shakespaere’s most famous soliloquy and perhaps his most famous play, Hamlet, will come alive this season. Trondelag Theatre describe it as the “classic of all classics and play of all plays. It is Shakespeare’s longest and the world’s most performed theater piece. We are continually fascinated by Shakespeare’s existentially profound drama of revenge, love and power.” Recap time: the tragedy of Hamlet is about the revenge of a prince against his uncle Claudius, who has killed his father, the King of Denmark, to seize the throne and also married his mother Getrude. However, this becomes a difficult task for him, as he also must kill. The film is a dramatisation of Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdal’s trip across the Pacific Ocean on the raft Kon-Tiki in 1947. Released in 2012, it received both Oscar and Golden Globe nominations in the best foreign film category.

Staying true to the soundtrack, the orchestra even features a conch player for that melancholic flute-like sound. The film has been shown accompanied by live music only once before, to a couple of thousand people at the Krakow Film Music Festival.

The film received particular praise for its visual expressions and its storytelling, but the film also has a stunning film score, characterized by distinctive instrumentation and melancholy. The composer, Johan Söderqvist, is an award winning film music composer, and Trondheim Symfoniorkester will play the film score live as the film is shown.

“The story of Kon-Tiki continues to fascinate and this will really be a spectacular screening,” says Engeness. The film is in English and Norwegian, there are English subtitles for the Norwegian speaking parts. KM

Since the opening in 2010, more than half a million people have been through the doors of Norway’s national museum for popular music. Rockheim has put on exhibitions, established the Hall of Fame and hosted concerts and events for both adults and children. The anniversary weekend will have more of the same, with activities, concerts and talks. ”We set out to make an exclusive programme and there is something for all age groups here, from young children to older people,” says Audun Hagen, communication officer at the museum. The weekend kicks off with a chance to get upclose and personal with long-standing Norwegian band Vazelina Bilopphøggers. Still going strong after 35 years, the band is known for their interpretation of 1950’s rock songs originally sung in English. Rock historian Terje Nilsen interviews and presents the band. “Saturday is a day for families and we have various events for children during the day. There will be sing-alongs, a children’s hour with a visit to Rochkheim’s secret room and a light and laser disco,” says Hagen. “In the evening, there will be a youth disco with live hip-hop performances from Yoguttene, supported by Snap n´Crackle”. Finishing off the weekend on Sunday is the popular ”Allsangkafe”, the singalong café aimed at the older generation. This Sunday, much loved local actress Helle Ottesten is the guest artist. “We are also opening the poster exhibition Sett på Rockheim, showcasing highlights from event posters from our five-year history, says Hagen. “And there is also our current exhibition about humour in music.” KM

Other highlights include the popular family day on Saturday, especially the performance of the hugely successful play Rockeulven (‘Rock Wolf ’, 2.30pm Saturday) and also the enigmatic Davina & the Vagabonds, back for their third successive year (Friday, 10pm). Kjell Inge also urges people to check out cover band The Etta James Experience, who will be lighting up the spectacular Magic Mirror stage (Friday 9pm). WL

First established in 1992 the festival took a departure from its blues roots in the 2000s when it tried to reinvent itself as a more generic music festival. In 2007 it went bankrupt, inspiring one of its original founders, Kjell Inge Brovoll to come back into the fold.“The festival lost its way, booked Snoop Dog on a Sunday night and lost a lot of money. This is the 8th year as the renamed ‘Blues in Hell Festival’ and I believe that it is the total experience which is more and more important,” explained Kjell Inge, whose croaky voice will be recognizably as one half of local blues band, Jolly Jumper & Big Moe (playing Saturday 3pm). “If you are trying to book headliners for a blues festival… who’s left?! Some of its biggest stars have died, like BB King last year; one of the last classic blends of blues, rock’n’roll and pop. There’s no headliners left! So I am always trying to highlight the total experience of the festival. You don’t have to queue for 45 minutes for a beer, there is heat in the tents if happens to be

World Children’s Day is actually celebrated in many different ways and on many different days, depending on where you are in the world. It just so happens that this year Trondheim celebrates on Sunday 13 September. This annual event brings you a colourful palet of cultural expressions, workshops, food, dancing, concerts, acting and much more. World Children’s Day was been organized for the first time in Norway by Rikskonsertene in Oslo 1999, as a part of the Oslo World Music Festival. Little by little it has become an annual event for many cities and Trondheim has been celebrating it since 2011. Children are celebrated all over the world, but the most important thing is to remember why this is so. Secretary-General for the UN, Ban Ki-moon, once said: “The one thing all children have in common is their rights. Every child has the right to survive and thrive, to be educated, to be free from violence and abuse, to participate and to be heard.” Families, grownups, and children will be able to explore different cultures and celebrate World Children’s Day. “Families can come to the ISAK centre in Prinsens Gate 44 and experience workshops, concerts, food and activities from different parts of the world. This year we have extra focus on the Balkans, with music and dance workshops,” said Rolf B. Jensen, culture coordinator for KUBA (Kultur for Barn). “We also have an instrument workshop, Slam Poetry, a children’s tea party, storytelling sessions and miniature parachute building. There will be food stalls where you can buy to get a taste of food from different parts of the world.” JS 13 SEPTEMBER Kultursenteret ISAK, Prinsens gt. 44 12:00 – 17:00 / FREE

The Spinning Wheel Part of Hip-Hop Theatre Festival, SPKRBOX

The Spinning Wheel is the result of MC, poet and beatboxer Baba Israel’s intention to celebrate his father’s life in a play. His father, Steve Ben Israel, was a jazz musician, stand-up comedian, pacifist, activist and member of the iconic theatre company Living Theatre in New York City.

“The target audience is very diverse, we aim for a mixed audience of hip-hop heads and theatre nerds. So for everybody that has an interest in both or just hip-hop, or just theatre,” says Cici Henriksen from the SPKRBOX Hip-Hop and theatre festival. “At the last SPKRBOX festival, the youngest audience member was just one year old, and the oldest 93 years old. That was the jam, but for this show I think you should be 13-14 years and up. If you have interest in The Living Theatre from New York City this is definitely a show for you.” Steve Ben passed away in 2012, and he left behind a story, legacy and family. He used his art to speak out against injustice and to try and find humor in the madness of modern America, and he inspired Baba to do the same.

World Children’s Day

Baba decided to make the show to celebrate his unique life and the powerful ideals he lived by, re-imagining his story through a combination of hip-hop, intimate performance, live music and video interaction. The show has already been through extensive touring in the UK at Theatre in the Mill, South Street Arts Centre, The Albany and Midlands Art Centre, as well as touring in the US. It is a collaboration between Baba Israel and Leo Kay – artistic director for the British theatre company Unfinished Business. Check the web for other SPKRBOX events, 17-20 September. How weird is ‘Weird’ Al Yankovic? Born in California and of Yugoslavian descent? Nothing to see here. Long curly hair? That ain’t so bad. Became a Vegan in 1992 after receiving a book from his girlfriend entitled ‘Diet for a New America’? We’ve ALL tried to please a partner at least once. Pass. Began a career as ‘Dr Demento’ and went on to write and perform spoofs of classic pop songs covering Michael Jackson (Eat It), Chamillionaire (White and Nerdy) and James Blunt (You’re Pitiful). Everyone’s gotta make a living, right? The bottom line is that Al Yankovic isn’t ‘weird’. He’s simply hilarious. From the epic Bond intro piss-take for the Leslie Nielsen giggle-fest, Spy Hard (“a man of intrigue, he lives for the thrill, always has places to go, and people to kill”) to his embarrassingly funny take down of everyone’s favourite angry white guy, Eminem; Couch Potato (“remote is ready, eyes wide, palms are sweaty, there’s Flintstones on the TV already, Wilma ‘n’ Betty”). There’s an endearing innocence about Weird Al (real name, Alfred Matthew Yankovic) that makes him sort of timeless; even granny would have a giggle. By the time he arrives to Brattøra on 26 September, Weird Al will have played in the US, Canada, Sweden and Oslo. His tour will move through Belgium, England, Ireland, Scotland, Amsterdam and Australia where many of his dates are already sold out. At the time of writing, tickets remain for Trondheim so book soon, because there’s nothing funny about missing a show like this. And if you think otherwise, you’re just weird. StartUp Weekend Trondheim

Weird Al Yankovic Pull the other one.

Have you ever fancied your chances on Dragon’ Den or Shark Tank? Startup Weekend Trondheim gives you the opportunity to test out entrepreneurship as you pitch your idea, form a team, build a business and go before a panel of judges, all in the space of just 54 hours. The fun starts on Friday night, when after food and networking, participants get the chance to pitch their ideas. Wacky thoughts are actively encouraged! The best ideas are voted on and then teams are formed to work together for the rest of the weekend. Over the coming hours, you’ll be helped by experienced mentors and speakers and get plenty of opportunities to refine and improve your ideas as you build a prototype and presentation. On Sunday night, teams present their progress to a live audience and panel of judges, who grill them on their prototype and business model. Last year’s winner were On Topic, a discussion forum technology intended for online publications. Although many teams work on web and mobile apps, any viable business idea can be explored. Wild Wood Design, last year’s runner-up, was a project to reuse and recycle waste wood into design-led furniture. The team even made their first sale during the event as one of the judges agreed to buy their prototype. Startup Weekend Trondheim is ideally suited to entrepreneurship students, programmers, designers and marketers, but ‘real-world’ experience is also highly valued. Some team have gone on to develop their businesses, but most people just take part to meet like-minded people, share their experiences, learn new skills and most important of all, have fun. This year’s Startup Weekend Trondheim will be held at the Gløshaugen campus of NTNU. Tickets (including all food) start from NOK 300. Buy before September 11th for the cheapest rate. 25-27 S E P T E M B E R NTNU Gløshaugen 18.30 300 NOKW

Trondheim MetalFest stick your fingers in the air!

If you feel too old to camp outside or stand in the pouring rain listening to your favorite bands, worry not, because this festival is entirely indoors, meaning there’s no need to worry about the weather. That means you can also bring your kids and/or family without having to worry about accommodation. Note that some concerts will be held at different venues such as Familien, Fru Lundgreen and Good Omens. Also note that the age of admission into the festival area is 18, but for the other venues it’s 20.

This year’s version of Trondheim Metal Fest – the 6th in a row - will see bands such as Sabaton (Sweden), Stratovarius (Finland), Between The Buried And Me (US), and Battery – Metallica Tribute (Norway) coming to Trondheim. In other words, if you like metal, this will blow your mind!

There is also a karaoke bar in the top floor at Scandic Hotel Lerkendal, so if the bands dont rock the casbah, you can have a crack at it yourself. The arrangers are claiming that you will be able to sing everything from Metallica to ABBA. There’s also a cinema and bars and meet-and-greet area inside the main venue.

Action Bronson UKA brings the heavy-hitters to town

In addition, if you’re a fan of Nightwish (Sweden), they will be playing at Sverresborg Arena on the 29th of August, giving you a good reason to hang around town for a couple of days before the festival starts. MV

The Trondheim Chamber Music Festival was established in 1996 as a small collection of friends and musicians from Trondheim. Fast forward to the present and it has become one of the most innovative chamber music festivals in the world.

There just aren’t enough Albanian-American, gourmand rappers around any more. Thank the rap lord, then, for Action Bronson. Action – real name Arian Asllani – is the (let’s get this out of the way early) big-boned New York lyricist who, when not writing lines such as “I’m shoulder pressing 3 plates, Obama EBT. I’m a G. Supermarket sweepstakes”, is wiping his voluminous beard clean after dining at an NY taco van, a Michelin starred restaurant or a Venetian trattoria for the Vice show, F*ck, That’s Delicious. When the legend-in-the-making takes to the stage at Studentersamfunnet expect those whisker-obscured lips to spit rhymes covering topics including hitting bongs (Mr Bronson has consumed more drugs than you’ve consumed oxygen), food, figure-skating and romantic female companions who just don’t act how they should.

32

THE LI ST trd T HE SIXT H ISSUE

Don’t worry, though, because Bronson – whose delivery style is likened to the Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah – doesn’t go in for the obnoxious ostentation of tits like 50 Cent by flashing box fresh sneakers and cumbersome gold medallions. There’s more thought to Bronson’s game. Yes, there’s the classic rap bravado, but it’s backed up by natural lyrical talent. Don’t believe us? Check out this Vice show and see how he describes the flavours, texture, and sheer joy of eating a cannolo. The guy understands language. Oh, and be warned: if he gets peckish during a show, it’s off to the burger shop. Be sure to join him. He doesn’t always have cash, and someone has to pay… DF 4 OCTOBER Storsalen, Samfundet 21.00

This festival aims to be a yearly international arena for chamber music of different genres of the highest quality, whilst giving young ensembles the chance to further develop their careers. This is accomplished by a cooperation between Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition (TICC) and the Trondheim International Chamber Music Academy (TICA). Even in its beginnings the Trondheim Chamber Music Festival has had a programme of international standard, and the establishment of TICC and TICA has helped attract international attention. The festival is not genre based; it gathers a variety of ensemble music of high quality and also presents concerts combining music, literature, dance, food, and fine arts. One of the main goals of the festival is to present a living composer each year. This helps break the barrier between audience and new music since the audience is able to enjoy music and meet the living composer as well. The festival attracts a lot of local and international interest In the last five years the percentage of students and young people featured as audience has been around 50%.KL

Transform / Hill-Aina Steffenach

With the theme ‘’see the world with new eyes’’ the Transform Festival is set to spice up the music scene this year in Trondheim by bringing in popular music groups from parts of the world such as Asia, Africa and Latin America. Listing an impressive line up of musicians and bands from Palestine, Senegal, Peru, Malawi and more, the festival hopes to expose Trondheim to an international music experience. Transform’s main thrust is the desire to celebrate the international town that Trondhem has become and present the different cultures living here. Hill-Aina Steffenach, head of the Transform festival – daytime white collar professional and night time music enthusiast/social change advocate - speaks enthusiastically about the festival and the ideas behind it. ‘’Norway, and Trondheim, is changing and is now more ethnic, we want to show how many possibilities and inspiration we can track from an international collaboration. We also want to reduce prejudices about people from other cultures and join people together in music, exhibitions, workshops and art.’’

HelloVenn (‘HelloFriend’) is the largest Friend Party in Trondheim, a positive alternative to Halloween for children and adults who want to enjoy a safe, fun, and constructive day together while meeting new people and creating new friendships. It’s all about meeting people, becoming friends, having fun and enjoying yourselves. Scary costumes are not as welcome as those which are friendly and funny. Adults are also encouraged to dress up together with their children, to show support and also because dressing up is fun, even for gown-ups! Open to all with a promise of large amounts of godteri (‘sweets’); that’s one part of the Halloween tradition that must be kept! JS

And it’s not just the music which is making inroads; there will also be two large conferences. The first, in collaboration with the labour organization in Norway will be on employment and integration. The other centres around the influence of the media on society. “We will talk about how hate speech and the power of words in building prejudice, racism and hate,” explains Steffenach .Just like Trondheim, Transfrom festival has something for everyone. Never heard of them, or him? Well then, this is the perfect chance to introduce yourself to the work of one of the most prominent figures of Norwegian cultural life in the 1900s. Nystedt was immensely gifted as a composer, choirmaster and organist. He composed music for almost all kinds of instrumentations and was a world-renowned composer of choral and church music, especially in USA where he was awarded with a Distinguished Service Citation in 1975 at the Augsburg College in Minneapolis. Storyteller Night the effect of a Moth’s wings across the Atlantic The phenomenon which first appeared in New York, The Moth, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling, has come to Trondheim and decided to stay. “Storytelling told in first person seems to become more and more popular around the world and NRK P2 now has its own ‘Salonghistorier’ where they record stories from the events at Kampen Bistro and broadcast some of the stories on radio,” enthuses Cecilie Wold Andersen, the host of Storytellers Night. “Ferdigsnakka is also a concept related to the storytelling and is very popular. We would therefore like to bring this concept for one night at Dokkhuset.” The founder of The Moth, George Dawes Green, a poet and novelist, wanted to recreate his memories of summer nights in which he and his friends would gather and tell stories. The light would attract moths which became a well fitting name for the storytellers group. At first the stories were told in his living room, but word spread fast and since its beginning in 1997 it has

To kick it all off the festival is going to be simultaneously video streaming ten concerts from ten different countries at the Torget on Saturday. ‘’With Technology we can connect with people from all over the world and the theme of this particular event is ‘Trondheim in the world – the world in Trondheim’’’

A concert at Nidarosdomen is never just a concert. This event is held in the honour of Knut Nystedt, an esteemed Norwegian orchestral and choral composer who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. He died in his sleep at his home in Oslo on 8 December 2014, leaving behind him an amazing opus that we now may enjoy, performed by the Nidaros Domkor, Steinmeyer organ, violinist Marianne Thorsen and conducted by Leif Arne Pedersen. presented thousands of stories, told live and without notes, to crowds from all over the world. This is the inspiration behind Storyteller Night explains Cecilie, who will be sharing stories in the company of two professional storytellers Hege Merakerås and Hilde Johanne Aafoss, Torgrim Mellum Stene and others. The event will most likely be held in Norwegian language. “It is not a prerequisite for the people who are on stage, but now it looks like everyone will be speaking Norwegian. If all goes well we probably will do it again later - and then maybe with a more international spread” said Cecilie. 27 O C T O B E R Dokkhuset 20.00 150 / 200 NOK
