This issue focuses on the allures of the urban core, introducing street art, perspectives on city planning, art and local style. Issue nine invites you to see another side of Trondheim. Walk the city and take in its hidden gems, see it from a new standpoint – be it from the waterways or the streets. Kristin Solhaug Næss, fifth year architecture student, student representative for the learning platform NTNU Live Studio, and co-founder of Studio:Beta. She has spent more time engaging with real life projects outside of the school, than inside the studios of NTNU, and she is one of the reasons wooden stairs are popping up around the city centre. Despite all the wooden projects, her real passion is people and co-creation, and how architecture can be used as a tool of communication in city development.

Born in Lithuania, Natalija moved to Norway more than 7 years ago. She is a selftaught freelance photographer and has been interested in photography since childhood, but became especially interested since moving to Trondheim 2.5 years ago. She takes pictures of everything around her, from portraits and food/interior (restaurants, hotels) photography to glorious Norwegian landscapes, and she considers Trondheim to be her biggest inspiration for creativity. s a third year student, I was asked to talk about my thoughts on brain drain and city centre development in Trondheim, at the yearly business conference arranged by NiT. I talked about how we had to get back to the city centre, dreaming of how all the empty buildings would be filled with startups and exciting new businesses. At the time, we were at the starting point of Studio:Beta, a student HUB for student initiated projects. We wanted to get out of the studios at the university and engage with the city centre, as we walked the streets to find an empty space we could occupy for a little while. Today, I consider Trondheim my hometown. I moved here five years ago, but it was not until I started engaging with the city through my work that I really developed a sense of belonging. As an architecture student and part of NTNU Live Studio I have been able to use the city as a learning playground, testing ideas, studying people and places, exploring architecture and city planning through experience. It’s become my own city now, not just a place I go to study. How come? What is the reason I don’t want to move back to my family down south, or seek bigger opportunities in Oslo or other places in the world?

She also told me about the project Kunnskapsaksen, an urban development strategy drawing an axis from the area of Sluppen, all the way to the city center, and further to Brattøra and Nyhavna. This is covering an area with a huge potential for city development. As the name suggests, you also find the new parts of the NTNU campus placed centrally along this axis in the strategy. “This way of thinking supports the focus on new sustainable, technological solutions, so that Trondheim can keep it’s commitments to the new city environment deal with the government,” says Bøkestad. Because even though the campus project still will take years of planning, it feels like the city spirit is changing. It’s almost like the city has changed gears the last years, speeding up it’s pace. The planning department is keeping up with their own strategy here, focusing on how to experiment with urban space. One of the projects the city-planning department is working on is the project called “En blå tråd,” focusing on activating the urban spaces along the river. Temporary installations and student projects are a part of this strategy, testing spaces for a short period of time, engaging with the city.

One of the hottest topics these days regarding city development is indeed where the new parts of the university should be located. I asked our chief of city planning, Hilde Bøkestad, about the campus project. She confirmed the importance of a campus being closely connected to the city, expressing hopes that “NTNU and SINTEF can use the city as a lab, researching the needs of our society.”

It’s up for discussion whether this new campus strategy really will “give the opportunity to have a seamless interface between the city and the research clusters,” as Bøkestad puts it. One of the main reasons I’ve become so fond of our city is because of the luck we had on actually finding an empty space in the city we could occupy. In our small space in Prinsens gate 8, Studio:Beta has been the place for endless discussions about what to do with the street outside and why all the stores have disappeared in this area.The think tank Urbanistene was born here, inviting the city in for public debate.The space has been our hub for the last two years, giving us the chance to engage with our city. And we are not the only ones seeking the city center, as small innovation hubs are popping up in the streets of Midtbyen, making all my dreams come true.

“In the development of the Nyhavna area we are trying to continue our strategy with temporary installations,” Bøkestad tells me, as the planning strategy process for the harbor area is coming to an end. These experiments with urban space have been one of the best learning platforms throughout my years as a student, as the planning department has put their energy into collaborations with the students of the city. I believe things like this are what make Trondheim a real student city, challenging the campus project on how to actually achieve their goals on integrating the new campus in the city.

ALL ABOUT THOSE BOATS Trondheim Kajakk Trondheim has so much history and so much beauty – but why see it only from the ground level when you can also see it directly from the waterways that bend and shape the city’s landscape? Trondheim Kajakk takes fun on the water to a whole new level and lets you see the city from a whole new perspective. Founded in 2012 by three students who studied at NTNU together, Trondheim Kajakk offers trips and tours with both kayaks and stand up paddle boards (SUP). Giedré Pigagiate founded the company along with her brother, Karolis Piagaga, and her fiancé, Sebastian Rosten Løvdahl, when they saw a need for something like it in Trondheim. “Me and my brother have been paddling since childhood,” Giedré says. “We love to do it so why not give people the opportunity?” Everything about the company has been self-financed by the three founders themselves, and while they started with space for 12 people to be out at the same time, they have now grown to have capacity for an impressive 32 people at once. Trondheim is famous for its deep fjords and sparkling Nidelva river. Thus, it’s not a wonder that some people incorporate these stunning waterways in their everyday life. Here is a selection of Trønders who make the water their work, their home and their playground.

academy of surfing in Spain and Giedré says that they are developing their craft all the time. “Each year we are learning more and having trainings and improving our skills,” she says. Equipped with special kids seats, anyone from 3 to 80 years old can come and enjoy an afternoon with a kayak or SUP, and some people even bring their dogs that sit in a special place on the front of the kayak. Giedré says that tourists and locals alike come to learn new things about the city and to see Trondheim from a new angle. And if you don’t have any experience with kayak or SUP before, have no fear. Trondheim Kajakk’s staff will teach you everything you need to know before going out. “The tour takes just a couple of hours and doing the trip, people can relax and enjoy the nature,” says Giedré. “You are in the nature but at the same time the city centre… it’s the perfect activity.” Open from March to the end of November, their season is officially beginning, so grab a paddle and get out there! Arne Skeie When the rent at his former collective got too high, Arne Skeie didn’t fear…he bought a boat. This 2006 jewel, named Barbarella after the 1986 film with Jane Fonda, has become Skeie’s home over the past year and a half and offers an environment so cozy, you’ll completely forget that you’re floating on water.

it gets to be negative 10 outside, Arne says it’s just a matter of putting on some thick socks and an extra blanket. However, he admits that storms can be an experience.

“I couldn’t really afford to buy an apartment so it seemed like a sensible middle way,” says Arne, who says the boat is perfect for him right now. “It’s small but you learn you have to kinda walk hunched down a bit.”

But thankfully, it’s a rarity. And while he is usually docked at his space at Solsiden, his house has the unique feature of being movable – he just has to remember to pack everything up first.

With no previous sailing experience to fall back on, the whole experience has been a new adventure for Arne, who says that some of the biggest minuses of living on a houseboat for him have been washing clothes and carrying a 25-liter barrel with water from a nearby training facility in the winter months when the water at the dock is shut off. He also noted that boat living makes you appreciate a good bed, but overall, Arne says there aren’t a lot of things to be missed compared to land living. When

“Some nights are a bit less sleep if it’s a storm,” he says, citing the noise from the ropes and the wind.

“There’s always something you forgot that comes crashing down,” he says. Originally from Norheimsund, Arne works part time as an interaction designer for Ducky and also does illustration and graphic design with Skurktur at Digs. He loves the houseboat life and plans to keep enjoying it for at least a while longer. When asked what he would do if he won the lottery tomorrow and could buy any type of housing he wanted, Arne replied, “Maybe buy a bigger boat!”

M/S Bjørnvåg Restaurant When Eivind Magne Einarsson Austad and his wife Tonje Harøy decided to open a restaurant, they didn’t have anything ordinary in mind. With eight-years education as a chef and two years working in a kitchen in Tokyo, Eivind was ready to start something of his own, and his passion for maritime and coastal culture led him to look for a more floatable restaurant concept. Thus, four years ago they bought an Ålesund-built passenger ferry from 1954 and spent the next one and a half years converting the ferry into the restaurant it is today, holding about 20 people below decks.

“The thought was to preserve coast culture in a way that it’s still accessible for modern man…Through food we can preserve the culture,” says Eivind. Docked at Brattørkaia 17c, the M/S Bjørnvåg has been serving delicious dishes with a true nautical experience for two and a half years now, and together with co-owner Torstein Borgersen they have built their business on developing personal relationships with local farmers, producers and hunters rather than working with big-scale grocers. “This way we can ensure that every time, we work with the best product in the world,” says Eivind, who’s first priority is that each aspect of the dining experience “feels good.” Eivind says that money has never been their focus, but rather ensuring an open and honest serving experience from the very start to the last bite. When one eats at the M/S Bjørnvåg, one can always count on seasonal dishes crafted in traditional Norwegian styles and the unique opportunity to gain a wider understanding of the food and exactly where it came from as it went from farm to plate. And if you want information about the boat itself, the owners are brimming with good stories to tell. “We want to tell people about the boat’s history and also the history of Norway and traditional food,” says Tonje. High school friends and now co-workers Tore Norheim and Bernt-Johan Bergshaven always dreamed of sailing, though neither of them had any experience with it. Nevertheless, when they saw someone post on Facebook that they were selling a boat that they, the sellers, had never seen in person, Tore and Bernt-Johan decided to buy it. “[Bernt-Johan] sent the link to me and said this is our opportunity!” says Tore. When the two saw the 1979 Swedish boat for the first time, they thought it would be a good project. However, it needed a lot (and they mean a lot) of work. The boat didn’t even float when they bought it. So why then would two friends with no sailing experience buy a boat that can’t even float? “It was very, very cheap,” laughs Tore, who admits that after all the repairs, it wasn’t actually any cheaper than buying a functioning boat from the start. When asked where they went to get all of the supplies and parts they needed, they laughed and replied Finn.no, engine and all. Tore and Bernt-Johan started working on the boat in March of 2015, and for months the friends would work full days at the office until 4 p.m., and then head straight to the boat afterwards to work until midnight. They say that while they wouldn’t do it again, it was a great experience. “You feel more safe now that we know the whole boat,” says Bernt-Johan. Named Liberty, the boat had its first voyage in June of 2015, and the biggest question weighing on their minds was simply, will it sink or will it float? Liberty floated and the two dove in head-first, having their first trip (and Tore’s first time ever in a sailboat) be all the way to southern Norway.The two tell how Bernt-Johan was running around trying to figure out how to put up the sails while Tore was reading the book on how to sail that Bernt-Johan had gotten him as a Christmas present. They admit that they learned a thing or two from YouTube as well when they were able to get a signal. One eye infection for Tore and a leak in the boat that needed lots of pumping out later and the two successfully completed their first trip. They cleverly say their motto is “seiling uten peiling.” So what’s next? This summer the friend duo plans to sail Northern Norway and head to the Træne festival. The summer after that, they plan to cross the Atlantic. And while the learning curve may have been steep, the two say that this is when the fun part starts. T H E L I ST t rd TH E NINTH ISS UE

Persaunet Bu nkers: A Trondheim institutionTrondheim’s role in WWII lingers in the ageing concrete of its infrastructure. Anyone who has ever wandered around the old German submarine bunker, DORA, and trailed their hand along the rough grey walls pockmarked with moss and decay, will have wondered at the history of these imposing structures. The area is a novelist’s dream and an architecture’s playground; and there have been several suggestions over the years for how to redevelop the area. But DORA is not the only German installation left in town. Several other concrete monstrosities remain and many have found new uses and even gained iconic status. One such property is ‘Bunker 18’ in the Persaunet area of Trondheim.

MC Klubb party cave Unbeknownst to the Trondheim public, there’s a cave on the side of Kuhaugen where it’s reported that Nidaors MC club has an event location. It’s also rumored to have previously been used as a WWII bunker.

With a population of 185,000, Trondheim is not a big city on a European scale. However, it is the third largest in Norway. The city was founded in 997 AD, and was called Nidaros until the Middle Ages. Trondheim was the capital of Norway from 1030 – 1217, and has played an important role in Norway’s history. If you are visiting Trondheim for a short time, or staying here long term and just want tips on what to do for the day, here are a few tips from the Tourist Information Office:

1. Lademoen and Svartla’mon: Lademoen is a densely populated residential area east of the city centre. The buildings were originally workmen’s houses. Svartlamoen consists of old wooden buildings and is considered an ‘alternative’ area. This area is characterized by art, including a large outdoor wall painting by Håkon Bleken and Håkon Gullvåt, two of Norway’s best known artists (see our feature on Street Art, pages 24-27). Lademoen church is surrounded by a beautiful park, which is often frequented by the locals.

The Old Trondhjem Hospital founded in 1277 is the oldest social institution in Scandinavia. The surrounding area, Hospitalsløkkan, is characterized by old wooden houses and is mostly a residential area. Hospitalskirken (the hospital church) dates from 1705. It was Norway’s first octagonal wooden church.

3. The old alleys: The modern day street plan is the result of the Cicignon plan of 1681. Yet, some of the medieval streets - Veitene - survive as alleys snaking between the broad and straight main streets. Among the oldest alleys are Apotekerveita, St. Jørgensveita and Sommerveita. (See map page 62, start at Nidarosdomen: St. Jørgensveita runs between Bispegate and Erling Skakkes Gate).

4. Nidaros Cathedral Nidaros Cathedral is the world’s northernmost gothic cathedral and was built over the tomb of St. Olav.The Cathedral is a very important goal for Pilgrims from all over the world. Nidaros Cathedral is also the place for royal coronations. Inside the Cathedral, you can see beautiful glass paintings, most of them by artist Gabriel Kielland. In the summer, you can climb the tower and enjoy the spectacular view of the city. Nidaros Cathedral offers special guided tours in the crypt underneath the Cathedral. 5. Ilabekken the hidden road up to Bymarka: If you want a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, Bymarka is not far off. This huge nature reserve just west of the city centre is perfect for families, couples or lone hikers. Walk from the centre for about an hour passing by waterfalls and wooden stairways up to lake Theisendammen.

If you cross over the Old Town Bridge and through the “Portal of Joy”, you’ll arrive at Bakklandet. Known as Trondheim’s old town, Bakklandet’s street are lined with old, colourful and picturesque houses. Here you will find cafés, restaurants and local shops. You can also try the Trampe bicycle lift, the first one in the world of its kind.

7. Trondheim along the waterfront

If you are by bike, or by foot, the route downtown Trondheim is perfect for the whole family. If you start at Rockheim music museum at Brattøra you can enjoy the great view of the Trondheim Fjord, and Munkholmen Island. Continue to Skansen and Ila before heading down by the Nidelva and across to historic Bakklandet. There are great views of the old buildings, the Nidaros Cathedral and Kristiansten Fortress when you walk along the river.

8. Nordre gate: If you want to feel the city life, you take a walk down the main pedestrian shopping street in Trondheim. Whether you want to shop, visit a café or listen to one of the many street musicians, this is the place to be. This is also the street you find the tourist information office.

Svartlamoen has now become an official city ecological testing area as a result of many years of dialogue, thanks to the efforts of these early artists and community leaders.

Street art itself is an exploration in both culture and space. Discovering street art is as easy as opening your eyes, and as difficult as finding the needle in a haystack. Heading east from the Ramp Pub, urban explorers can find a number of smaller pieces of art above doorways and on old wooden walls, which were made to have similar effect. The act of art became a means of shielding buildings from demolition, and more importantly, protecting the community and families living there from the aims of developers with close connections to city politics.

Street art, graffiti, vandalism, whatever it be called, let’s call a spade a spade. Street art is reactionary, and in some senses involuntary. It was never meant to be a culturally appropriated art form - its rough edges are its inspiration. Graffiti is the loudest, most visually impressive voice for subcultures that most would prefer not exist. The stories, and their telling through this art form, through people with no better option than to ”make their own tracks” is exactly what makes graffiti both controversial and visceral. So get out there, urban explorers, and take the path less traveled.You will find inspiration around every unexpected turn.

Norway has long been identified by its fjords and mountains; enormous natural borders between communities. In recent years these boundaries, which are the root of such strong local identities, have gradually been transformed by ever improved transport networks.. Now the widest fjord of them all is set be bridged in an ambitious plan to bring the outlying communities in from the cold. The proposed bridge between Trondheim and Fosen would roughly follow the route of the existing ferry service between Flakk and Rørvik, a challenging 7.5km. The most likely design (as envisioned in the illustration) would be a 1400m suspension bridge linking Flakk to an underwater ‘mountain’, followed by an imposing 5700m floating bridge Floating, or pontoon bridges are built upon a series of watertight concrete platforms, which are secured to the ocean floor, which in this case is up to 500m below. At its highest point the arc of the bridge would be 90m above the sea, which is nearly enough to scrape Nidaros cathedral under, never mind the tallest sea liners. The plans also involve connecting the bridge directly to Trondheim by a tunnel to Ila. Alternatives to this crossing included a tunnel all the way under the fjord, though this pipe dream was quickly quashed by the logistics.

Proponents for the bridge argue that it would pay itself off in 40 years, open up new markets (in both directions) and replace 1.6 million ferry trips a year. Demanding projects also create new national knowledge, a view shared by Rissa Development boss Olbert Aasen: “It is highly likely, in our opinion, that the bridge being built, technically. We are working on the financing elements and the depreciation period should remain at 40 years. Had we had financing in place by now, we could have announced projects within one year.” Should the project be realised it will be the longest floating bridge in the world, but nowhere near the longest bridge in the world, that accolade belongs to Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge: Beijing-Shanghai, which is a ridiculous 165km long.

With a price tag of 12 billion kroner, the bridge is not without its own challenges. But the argument for the investment is that despite Trondheim having grown exponentially over the past 50 years (61% since 1964), Fosen has suffered an 8% loss in population in the same period. It is a curse which has befallen many of Norway’s inaccessible outlying areas, but experiences in Bergen suggest that large scale solutions can buck the trend. Askøy, a neighbouring kommune to Bergen, suffered from similar geographical restrictions as Fosen, before a bridge was opened in 1991. Askøy’s 115% population increase since the 60s, most of which occurred after the bridge’s construction, is now in line with the growth of other outlying areas.

I am currently busy at work in my studio completing the second part of the quadrilogy of video works called ‘Transmutations’. What can we find in your studio? For the time being my studio space is littered with a variety of vessels containing combinations of different liquid solutions and suspensions. Apart from that, you can find various photographs pinned to the walls, a couple of different series in the early stages, books on alchemy, a selection of artists books by me, dried / petrified offset printing ink, ostrich eggs, hair and the skeletal remains of a cats tail.

How has Trondheim been an impact on your artistic process? I grew up here, and I have spent the better part of my photographic practise observing and documenting various aspects of Trondheim. From walls and surfaces of buildings, to people and the surrounding countryside. To say the least, Trondheim has had a huge impact on my process.

Which norwegian artist would you recognize as an inspiration? Lars Skjelbreia’s show at TSSK, Psyche, earlier this year, blew me away. And recently I have been really into the works of Jana Winderen.

Describe your favourite art piece/photograph This is really hard, as my favourites change according to my current obsessions and practises. At home in our living room, we have a print of Francis Bacon’s Triptych 1974 (centre panel). I love how the amorphic form seemingly dissolves into a liquid state. Others stalwarts that have had and continue to be sources of inspiration are Jeff Wall (his entire body of work, no chance in picking any favourite there), William Eggleston’s Guide, and Gerhard Richter’s Overpainted Photographs.

Upcoming exhibitions? I just finished my second solo exhibition, Transmutations, at Galleri Blunk. Right now I am doing some finishing touches on a video that is going to be on show at this years Meta.Morf. A film program, curated by Jeremy Welsh, shown at Trondheim Senter for Samtidskunst, alongside work from Joan Jonas, George Snow and Inger Lise Hansen. And in the start of April, I will take part in a large group show at Skansen Stasjon, via Punktet Visningsrom for Kunst, alongside 13 other artists. As for publishings, Prega, just released its first ever magazine last December. It is available for purchase at Prega.no, and a variety of shops throughout the country.

Oddleif Apneseth, Eivind Natvig, Eirik Knoop, Richard Aal, Kim Jakobsen To, Benjamin A Huseby, Frode&Markus, Knut Bry, Lars Brønseth, BoeMarion, Knut Egil Wang, Sigurd Fandango and Morten Andersen are some of them. How are you feeling? Great. I’m finally working as a full-time freelancer. Its scary as hell, but also wonderful. What can we find in your studio/workplace? Film, different camera-equpitment, harddisks, lots of cables, notes from ongoing projects, outtakes from projects and coins, old receips, post-its etc. How has Trondheim been an impact on your artistic process as a photographer? Trondheim made me believe it was possible to live as a photographer. I studied at Norsk Fotofagskole and was very happy with the school and the people I met. It was during my time at Fotofagskolen I

Kosmorama is Trondheim’s annual film festival, coming up on March 8-13. I sat down with Silje Engeness, the director of Kosomorama, to talk about new films, the classics, and Trondheim’s changing art scene.

There are so many incredible films in the program this year. Which films are you excited about? I’m excited for all of them. Making a festival program is kind of like having children: you shouldn’t have any favorites, but at the same time, the films have different personalities. I’m looking forward to our opening film, Carol—with Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. The way they show New York in 1952 reminds me of Mad Men. I’m also very excited to show a film called Idol about a guy from Gaza who won Arab Idol in 2012, so it’s based on a true story. It’s really a film about conquering fears to succeed, even with bad odds. It’s about as close as you can get to a feel-good movie in Gaza. Of course, you can see from the film that it’s not a very easy place to grow up, but it shows that people have hopes and dreams everywhere, and that good things can happen all over the world. I also think it’s especially important these days to see movies where people from different places have dreams in common. In my opinion, it has become an even more important movie now than the first time I saw it and chose it for the festival. You’re showing some classics like Fargo, Singin’ in the Rain, Ziggy Stardust, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Yes! And it’s exciting that we are collaborating with TEKS: Trondheim Elektroniske Kunstsenter, who have managed to invite Douglas Trumbull. He was on the set for 2001, and he will also give a talk when we present the film.

What’s the film festival crowd like? People who go to film festivals are the original binge-watchers. I think if you’re interested in seeing more than a film a day, you’re the kind of person who is a bit more curious. You should feel it with all your senses.

Do you have a particularly good Kosmorama memory? Quite a few! Last year we showed Kvinner I for store Herreskjorter. This film is the first film in modern times that’s made in Trondheim. When I watched that movie with all the people in the auditorium and we saw the pictures from our own city… that’s how watching a movie should feel. It was warm, and it reminds you that it’s more fun to watch a film at the cinema with a lot of people than watching it alone. We say, “film er best på kino”.

Welcome to Norway looks really funny! They made it in Storlien and sometimes we joke that that’s in East Trøndelag. The director, Rune Langlo is from Trondheim, so we kind of feel like that’s a Trondheim movie, and it’s a good one. It will have English subtitles so everyone should see it. We are also very excited that on Wednesday, we’ll be giving out a prize this year to someone who is sustaining a significant effort to the film scene in Trøndelag. We hope it will give inspiration so that within a few years, the next feature film from Trondheim will also be produced by someone here in Trondheim. The people that work here manage to get involve in big international projects, and I think that makes Trondheim feel bigger. That’s why we love The List. Trondheim is more fun these days because it has become more diverse than it was 20 years ago.

What does Kosmorama do during rest of the year? Kosmorama is obviously the biggest event we have, but we also do other events throughout the year. One of them is Olavsfestdagene at Olavs Kino (July 27-August 6). We will show ten films during that festival, and lots of people travel to see it because it’s in the middle of the summer. One of the films we will present at Olavsfestdagene is This Changes Everything based on a book by Naomi Klein. She wrote No Logo a few years ago, and she’s a guru in the green movement. We’ll also be hosting an event with Liv Ullman, Norwegian actress and

If I want to see a locally produced movie, what movie should I see? You could see Welcome to Norway, a Norwegian movie with english subtitles. The director is actually from Lian in Trondheim and will be there during its screening. It was filmed at a hotel in Ånn (between Åre and the Norwegian border to Trøndelag).

The exhibition begun with the work of Ramón Isern on 7 February will go on until August 2016. “Ramón Isern (1914-89) was born in Barcelona and resided in Trondheim from 1954. Isern created work in both two and three dimensions, and the museum is home to a significant collection of his works. The exhibition features a selection of works representing his artistic practice.” – press release from TKM. Håkon is a famous artist born in Trondheim in 1929, and you just might have walked by this extraordinary 87 year old man while strolling down Bakklandet, and not even realized it. Shame. This man is responsible for so many amazing things, for one he painted the portraits of Olav the V and Arne Nordheim (Norwegian composer). He also illustrated a bunch of literary works of some unknown authors, no one important really, just Henrik Ibsen, Franz Kafka. He also likes to base his paintings on their work, whatever, not cool at all. Oh, and at one point someone managed to steal nine paintings from his storage. artists such as Tomás Saraceno (AR), Agnes Meyer-Brandis (DE), Cath Le Couteur & Nick Ryan (UK), Alicia Framis (ES), Golan Levin (US), Haines & Hinterding (AU), Johannes Langkamp (NL) and Øyvind Brandtsegg (NO) among others. The exhibition is curated by Alex Adriaansens and Espen Gangvik.

If yes, then you will be excited to learn that from 2010 Trondheim Electronic Arts Centre has arranged a biennial for art and technology, Meta.Morf, and its fourth edition is coming up this March and lasting for two months, featuring a conference, exhibitions and concerts.

The common ground all artists stand on is the search for interaction and meaningful, yet there is a playfull connection between science and art. They are raising important and pressing questions regarding the future of our very existence on the Earth and beyond, which involves social, environmental, political and cultural challenges.

Dara O’Briain is a man of many talents: comedian, scientist, The Sunday Times and The Daily Telegraph columnist and television presenter. He is now one of the most recognizable faces on British TV. He appears on many popular shows such as 'The Panel', where he was discussing Irish reality with guests or 'Mock the Week', the celebrity panel game where the main idea is improvised standup comedy. This brilliant winner of many prestigious comedy awards is well known to the Norwegian audience for his hilarious performances in popular 'Live at The Apollo´, the stand-up comedy TV show, aired on NRK3. O'Briain's live shows are known for their amazing, energetic interaction with the audience. He lacks the fear to challenge the audience to participate and it is really something else to observe his performances in the flesh. And this is the heart (or perhaps the brain) of O'Briain's success; straight forward comical interaction, a natural and effortlessly funny man.

The fourth Trondheim biennale - Meta.Morf 2016 will showcase artists, writers and scientists that “in various ways take a closer look at man as interstellar traveller, and how we at the beginning of this millennium are about to redefine our relationship with the stars and, consequently, ourselves,” writes Espen Gangvik, director of Meta.Morf.

Meta.Morf therefore comes up with the idea that artist involvement in space programmes would be meaningful for both space researchers and artists in rethinking the array of diverse possible futures of Universe. Join this journey! (ZD)

Photo Exhibition Behind the walls - seen though the eyes of the prisoners' children Every year in Norway, between 6.000 and 9.000 children have a parent placed in jail. Through the eyes of three teenagers, this exhibition explores daily life in prison and the effects that incarceration of a parent can have on children and young people. The project was initiated by For Fangers Pårørende (FFP), the Organisation for Families and Friends of Prisoners. They wanted to focus on the diversity and normality of life in prison. Seen through the eyes of the children of inmates, who take the photos, the project is thought to be unique in a global context. The youths got access to Ullersmo prison in Oslo and

the result is a collection of subdued images. Empty corridors, locked doors and sterile walls are recurring themes, but alongside images of the gym or a visiting room filled with books and toys, the exhibition also offers a more rounded experience of what life is like behind walls. One of the artists is 16-year-old Carmen, whose dad has spent more than half of her lifetime in jail. She jumped at the chance to be involved in this project. “It was important to me to be able to express myself in a way that I had not had a chance to previously,” she says. “Through the photos I had the opportunity to tell my story in a different way.”

For Carmen, her involvement in this project was an extremely positive one. “The main thing I took from it was a sense of comfort. When I visited my dad in prison, all I saw was the visiting room. This project allowed me to walk down the same halls as he walked down, and it felt good to see that prison life was not as terrible as I had once thought it was.” See the exhibition at Trondheim Folkebibliotek, now until March 21. Across the world the vegan movement is gaining momentum, including on our shores. Last year, Trondheim Vegan Fair was arranged for the first time and attendance far exceeded expectations, with more than a 1000 visitors packing Verkstedhallen to the brim.

Have you ever felt trapped in the gap between how you imagine your life to be and how it really is? Then Bill Bailey’s Limboland might be just the ticket! He comes to Olavshallen with his new show in April.

Building on the success, organizer Emma Jarvis promises the 2016 fair will be even bigger and better. Spread across several venues in Svartlamon this year, the event will comprise of around 30 stalls as well as lots to see and do, both for adults and children.

The last couple of years have seen a whole host of great UK comics performing in Trondheim, and we fully expect another cracker of a night when Bailey takes to the stage with his musical comedy act. Limboland has received great reviews in Australia, New Zealand and in his native UK.

“Veganism is not such a weird thing anymore, and we see an increased demand for and interest in vegan products,” says Jarvis. “Our aim is to make this fair open and accessible to people who are curious about veganism, as well as making it an interesting event for people who are already vegan or vegetarian.”

Before becoming a comedian, Bailey toured with an experimental theatrical troupe, played in a band, appeared on stage with the Worker’s Revolutionary Party and worked as a lounge pianist. In his live shows, music, jokes and theatrics are fused together to great effect.

Among the confirmed stallholders are Mat from Hagen and Trondheim Folkekjøkken. There will also be cookery classes from Oslo-based vegan bloggers Jane and Thomas from Veganplan.

With sharp wit, he tells tales of finding himself in this halfway place that is in limbo and rails against a world that does not quite match our expectations. Bailey is a well-travelled man, and the show also promises a “hilarious saga of a disastrous family trip to Norway to see the northern lights.” As a musician, Bailey always felt an urge to slip jokes into the music. Now, he slips music into his comedy, and no show would be complete without music. The heart-rending country and western ballad played on a bible sounds particularly intriguing. Kosmorama, a six day film festival, will be happening from March 8-13, mostly in Trondheim's Kinosenter. The festival consists of the screenings of more than 70 films- some obscure, some mainstream, some for kids and some for adults. Besides the movie screenings, there will be guests speakers, seminars, parties, a quiz night, and activities for kids. During the day on Saturday and Sunday, there will be a free exhibition in the Nova foyer where kids can explore an app made by Ablemagic in Trondheim. If you feel like learning, several seminars will be accessible for free. Amnesty: Human Rights and Terrorism will be free on Thursday evening at the library. Film buffs may want to join Friday & Saturday night's film quiz (in Norwegian). The festival will screen several classic movies including Fargo, Singin' in the Rain, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. 2001: A Space Odyssey will include a presentation by Douglas Trumbull, who supervised the special photographic effects of the film. Other highly anticipated films include The Idol about a man from Gaza who won Arab Idol in 2012, Carol, Cate Blanchett's Oscar Nominated New York romance, Spotlight, the star-studded drama about investigative journalism, and Welcome to Norway, a dark comedy about a racist hotel-owner who sets up an asylum centre to save his business. Many of the films have subtitles and most have multiple showings. What’s great is that many international films have English subtitles, which means that those of us who are not great at reading Norwegian get a chance to see some fantastic world cinema. Trøndelagsdagen is an annual career fair connecting employers from both private businesses and the public sector in the Trøndelag region with students, recent graduates and anyone on the job market. A big week at Brukbar/Blæst The legendary Jamaican producer and dub pioneer Lee Scratch Perry is riding his reggae train all the way to little town Trondheim, and it’s going to change your life. This 80-year old upsetter has his roots deep in the classics of reggae, and was the creative effort which helped unleash Bob Marley on an unsuspecting world. A humble songwriter for the likes of Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer and King Tubby, Perry was the modest muse who worked tirelessly, fascinated and engrossed in the background. As others moved on to make their own fortunes, he remained committed to experimenting with the musical form. In the 70s he started the infamous Black Art studios and collaborations with many of the greats followed - Max Romeo, The Congoes, the Abyssians , Delroy Wilson, The Heptones and even the Clash. Today Perry is adored for visionary influence and enjoyed for his eccentric performances - expect wild costume, adorned with mirrors, shaman-like bangles and red beard dye. He brings with him long term musical associate Mad Professor, who is no slouch neither. One of the biggest names in Dub, The Mad Professor has been working with Perry since the 80s and has remixed for Sade, Massive Attack and the Orb amongst others. But why are we telling you al this? Jazzfest One to plan ahead for As the ice begins to thaw, so does our resolve to stay in and be ‘homely’. With so much going on this period we might be in danger of exhausting ourselves too early, because next month there is an event of world class music which deserves an early mention in all our calendars. Trondheim’s very own international jazz festival, Jazzfest, has been around in one form or another since 1980 and now it’s back with a boom. The List spoke to Ernst Wiggo Sandbakk, Jazzfest’s general manager, with responsibility for the festival’s artistic content. “Trondheim has a high international standing in the world of jazz, not least because of the success of Jazzlinja at NTNU (a programme which offers education in a creative jazz, started in 1979), which has delivered forerunners for new European jazz for decades.” “We’re working on making Jazzfest an established destination, though we are quite different from other festivals in general.
