Will you become the next ‘Chatelain of Cause de Clérans’? Driving down the D36 you suddenly see the enormous keep towering over the village. The Château de Cause de Clérans (11th – 13th century) is a unique and historical place forming the centre of the village of Cause de Clérans, not far from Bergerac. A peaceful location yet only 15 minutes drive to the airport and all other facilities. The restored ruin of the 30 meter high keep (the oldest medieval defensive tower in the Aquitaine), the walls of the original château, the reception hall and the chapel together enclose the garden and look out over the village. The chapel is renovated into a comfortable living accomodation with three compact bedrooms and two bathrooms. In the past years all walls have been consolidated and restored with much dedication, as well as the reception hall and the chapel – these buildings are ready for the next hunderd years and don’t need much maintenance. A magical and inspiring place to write, to compose, to meditate, to relax completely, to enjoy as a private home, but is also perfect to share with others to use for concerts, exhibitions, receptions, photo/film shoots, for exclusive parties, as a wedding location ... This well-known historical monument has been featured in magazines around the world. This unique place is for sale and waiting for a new ‘Châtelain de Clérans’. If you are interested, please ask for more information: joris.vangrinsven@orange.fr or telephone +33 553 573 376 / +33 615 512 071.

Hello from our Queen Bee
Before the festive season arrives, we have lots to think about in November. In gardening we cut back for future growth to keep our gardens beautiful next year and, for those who love indoor table sports, we highlight table tennis and snooker here in France. Our well-being feature focuses on mental health, a subject close to all our hearts, and we list previous articles to help with depression and stress, etc. A new advice column answers your legal questions and, in our piece on Local Groups, you are bound to find new friends and support in your area. Winter warmers can be found in the food and drink pages and our Guest Chef concentrates on a seasonal favourite. We are often asked how The Local Buzz came into being so, for one time only, we include our own story and hope you find it interesting. Then, we have the glitz, glamour and fun of Christmas with low cost ideas for fabulous decorations, a round-up of our regional Christmas markets and our 4-page Christmas gift guide. Don’t forget, you can always treat friends and family to a postal subscription for this magazine to save them trudging out in the cold months and ensure they receive a copy. We thank you once again for your support and hope you enjoy this issue. We also hope that you have a wonderful Christmas and a very happy New Year. See you in 2020!

Precision & Procedure No two words better describe how to practise French Law.
France, like no other country, is a legal and administrative obstacle course. This is why when you choose a lawyer to handle a French matter, you need to work with a firm who only specialises in French Law. We have English French-trained lawyers (avocats), living and working in Toulouse. Being there on the spot is certainly practical, but the secret of Bright Avocats’ success is simple: listening, asking the right questions, and finding the most effective course to a satisfactory conclusion.

HOMES + GARDENS
T
here’s no doubt that this year in particular has been a very challenging time for the garden. The excessive heat and lack of rainfall has taken its toll on plants, trees, shrubs and, of course, our grass. It’s surprising how quickly the garden will recover with a little care and attention over the next couple of months. Here are a few things to consider in preparation for your 2020 garden.
Take stock and take action
We all make mistakes and each year we learn more about our gardens and what our plants need, so now is the perfect time to address any issues. • What has done well and what needs to stay in place? If a particular plant has flourished, consider buying more of the same or even propagating from the parent plant. Repeat planting in the border gives a very professional look as it draws the eye along the border and provides good continuity. • Consider moving shrubs that would benefit from a new position. This might be because they are in the wrong location for their size or specific growing conditions. Some shrubs find the direct heat too much and the leaves start to burn, so moving them to a shady spot may help to protect the foliage. • Replace plants that have died. You can check by
running your thumb nail down the stem, if it’s still green, it’s still alive. If so, trim the shrub into a good open shape, keep it moist and give it a good mulch to keep the roots warm. In spring you should see evidence of buds appearing. • Trim back Perennials that have stopped flowering, after you have collected any dry seed heads for sowing in spring. Mulch all flower beds with compost or leaves. • Plant spring flowering bulbs. Start with Daffodils and Narcissus, leaving the Tulips until after the first frost. Tulips may suffer from Botrytis blight which lies dormant in the soil but is killed by frost. Containers can also be planted with bulbs ready for spring. • Try to keep lawns free of fallen leaves. Rotting leaves encourage fungus and bare patches in the lawn. Rake them into piles and transfer to the compost heap. Leaves take six to nine months to decompose but green material, such as kitchen waste and grass cuttings, help to speed up the process. • Compost heaps need to be turned regularly. This is a great job on a cold morning, keeping you fit and warm. Try to ensure the heaps are located out of sight but close enough to your borders for easy access. (You can find Sue’s Perfect Compost Recipe in the Sep/Oct 2018 issue at www.thelocalbuzzmag.com/ read-online.)
• Before the first sign of frost, wrap shrubs in horticultural fleece and secure with string. Any large plants in pots can be grouped together against a sunny wall for additional protection. Always check your containers to see if they are frost proof, especially those that are glazed. An additional layer of bubble wrap should give good protection if you can’t find suitable frost proof space inside. • Tropical plants such as Bananas can be reduced in size then wrapped in mesh filled with leaves. This protection needs to remain in place until after the last frost. Try to keep the stems as dry as possible, if they get too wet they will probably freeze and die. Alternatively you can dig them up and repot in a large container to be stored in a shed or greenhouse.)
Equipment maintenance
Don’t forget to give your tools some TLC too. • Clean and lubricate your small tools. Make sure you give special attention to secateurs and loppers as they can easily introduce diseases into stems, so keep them sterile. • Arrange for your mowers to be serviced ready for spring, sharpen your chainsaws and give your strimmers a good clean. • If you are planning a tree pruning session over winter, think about hiring or buying a shredder. This will be a good investment as the wood shavings are excellent as a winter mulch and it helps to avoids trips to the déchetterie. Finally, on the very chilly days you can browse through those seed catalogues by the fire thinking about your gardening year ahead.
Turn compost heaps regularly
Protect tender plants
A sudden drop in temperature can do the most damage. The wind chill factor in exposed areas should never be underestimated, along with the early sunrise after a frosty night which will often scorch the leaves of tender shrubs.

HOMES + GARDENS
Diseases in the garden
It’s almost inevitable that you’ll experience the effects of garden diseases but all is not lost.
S
ue Sargeant explains that most fungal, bacterial and viral plant diseases are spread naturally by wind, rain, insects, small animals and even our own intervention in the garden. There’s a balance to be struck and, with some simple good housekeeping tips, you can reduce the risk of losing your plants. • First, find out the cause of the damage, then research a solution. The internet is a great resource but also check out what your neighbours and friends might know. • Select disease resistant varieties. Many seed merchants, growers and garden centers can offer sound advice on which varieties might be successful in your garden. • Remove any diseased and dead plants as soon as you see them. Don’t pile debris near your healthy plants. • Keep weeds to a minimum. • Keep your plants healthy but do not overfeed as this encourages new, weak, soft
30
growth that is susceptible to disease. • Crop rotation is essential to avoid the build-up of recurrent diseases. • Companion planting tends to confuse some predators. • Water in the early morning so that plants dry off before nightfall. Use a drip watering method rather than sprays that wet the leaves. We often see problems occurring after rainfall because the leaves are too wet. • Provide good air circulation. Overcrowding encourages diseases. • Mulch around plants. This will provide a natural barrier, stopping the soil borne fungi from spreading to the leaves.

Brenda Vockings, who heads up Bordeaux and the South West of France branch and can post poppies anywhere, is also planning a 2021 centenary book of memories. If you would like to

P
assionate about cooking since she started baking with her grandmother aged five, Louisa Hallewell moved to Gers 12 years ago, setting up an organic farm raising Porc Noir pigs, chickens, ducks and geese, and a huge vegetable garden. Inspired by her seasonal homegrown produce, and using a zero waste approach, Louisa offers catering and runs workshops for people interested in cooking and homesteading. She brings us these three very different recipes.
AĂŻgo Boulido (Garlic Broth)
(Serves 4) 1L Vegetable stock 1 Head of garlic, cloves peeled and left whole (white, purple or a mix of both) 4 Sage leaves A couple of sprigs of fresh thyme 1 Bay leaf Pain de campagne
A traditional Occitan/Provencal recipe

winter
warmers
Three dishes that show off the less well-known side
of the Gers kitchen, plus some great Christmas wines. Method Pour the stock and garlic into a large pan, cover and bring to a gentle boil for 20 mins. Take off the heat and remove the cloves with a slotted spoon, reserving them in a bowl. Add the herbs to the pan, cover and stand over a gentle heat for another 20 mins to infuse. Mash the cooked garlic cloves to a paste (add a small splash of olive oil
if required). Slice the bread and lightly toast. Drizzle with olive oil and place a round in the bottom of a bowl. Strain the broth and swirl the garlic paste in to it. Season to taste. Ladle the broth over the bread and serve.
Boudin Noir & Poached Apple Jalouise
(Serves 10 as Amuse Bouche)
300g Frozen suet 450g Plain flour 250ml Cold water Pinch of salt 1 Egg, lightly whisked 500g Organic Porc Noir boudin noir 200g Organic apples, poached until soft Method Make some quick flaky pastry by grating the frozen pork suet into salted plain flour.
Delicious as an amuse bouche or starter
www.thelocalbuzzmag.com
FOOD + DRINK Add approx 250ml water to bind it together. Cover and refrigerate for an hour. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Blend the poached apples to a purée. Roll the pastry to approx 4mm thick then spread the purée lengthwise along the pastry, 3cm up from the bottom. Cut the boudin to about 2.5cm in diameter and place along the strip of purée. Roll the pastry up, covering the purée and boudin. Using egg as your glue, brush a line along the pastry and stick the two edges together. Remove any excess pastry with a sharp knife. Heavily grease a roasting tray and gently place your boudin roll onto the tray. “Score” the pastry to give it some texture. Brush the top of the pastry with more egg, so it becomes golden when cooking. Place in the middle of the oven and cook for approx 40 mins until the pastry has a crunchy bottom and golden glaze. Serve as an apéro dînatoire or an amuse bouche, cut into small slices or as larger slices, for a starter.
Coq au Floc
(Serves 4 – 6) 2kg Coq 150g Dried raisins 1 Large onion, chopped Duck fat 250 ml White Floc 1-2tsp Flour Salt & pepper Method Quarter your cockerel. Melt the duck fat in a large ,heavy oven-proof pan (cocotte or casserole dish), and bring to a medium/high heat. Add the quartered sections and sear until browned. Remove the chicken pieces and reserve. Reduce the heat, add the onion and cook in the fat and juices until golden. Stir in the flour, add the raisins and then deglaze the pan with the Floc. Return the chicken pieces to the pan, season with salt and pepper. Place a lid on the casserole and cook slowly in the oven for 2-3 hours, basting it from time to time. Add a little water if necessary. Serve with sautéed potatoes and French beans tossed in garlic butter. www.enjouanisson.fr

You can see John’s recipe for Mulled Wine on our website
John Gilchrist is a former UK Sommelier of the Year and winner of the Mondavi award for the best wine list in the world. He gives us his pick of wines for Christmas.
John’s Pick of Christmas Wines I am often asked what to drink at Christmas. Mulled wine is a festive staple in our house. It should never be a complicated drink; simple is best with beautiful Christmassy scents. I am lucky tasting wine throughout the year and always happen upon gems for celebratory meals. This year we are drinking a Crémant de Bordeaux of great finesse. Château Tour Calon – Lateyron Cuvée Abel is a blend of old vine Semillon with a touch of Cabernet Franc. Fine bubbles with a nose of vanilla roasted nuts and lime and delicate palate of hawthorn and currant. lateyron.com White will come from Domaine Chante l’Oiseau, south west of Domme in western Dordogne, where the soil in this tiny vineyard is similar to that of Grand Chablis. Cuvée Champs de la Tour is an elegant smoky and buttery chardonnay balanced with a stamp of chalky minerality and baked apples. domaine-chante-loiseau.com. Red is from the great Joseph Janoueix who has numerous chateaux in Saint Emilion, Pomerol and Castillon.
Château la Croix St-Georges is one of the most velvety wines I have ever tasted. The 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc Pomerol is the deepest purple with sweet, silky, blackberry and truffle flavours and is perfect with roast beef. josephjanoueix.com For dessert this year will be Château Doisy Daene from Barsac. A beautifully sweet sauternes that is never cloying and is great to finish a meal as it partners both blue cheese and dessert. John runs Les Caulins, a gîte and cookery school in SW France, with his wife (and chef) Emma. www.lescaulins.com You can find John’s recipe for Mulled Wine in the Food and Drink section at www.thelocalbuzzmag.com-articles

Who doesn’t love a
Marché de Noel
You could visit a Christmas market a week from end November to 5 January! So, without further ado, we present the most likely places to see Santa and his little helpers in our region of France.
Traditional music, lights, Santa’s grotto, mulled wine and oysters, there is something magical about a Christmas market, especially in France where the wooden huts transform town squares into mini villages full of wonder. Fun for all the family is guaranteed, as is the joie de vivre that comes with the festive season.
GIRONDE
Fun for all the family
People come from all over the world to attend the spectacular, oh so Christmassy Bordeaux market from 29 November to 30 December. You could also combine a present hunt with a visit to the beach, at Arcachon from 14 December to 5 January, or nearby Cap Ferret on 14 and 16 December and from 21 December to 6 January. Saint-Emilion offers a double helping this year with the Christmas market on 7/8 December and the Zamateurs d’arts Christmas Market on the 14/15th. Other markets include Avensan, Blanquefort, Camarsac and Castelnau-de-Médoc on 23/24 November, and Sainte-Eulalie on 7/8 December. Bazas, with its carol singers and the traditional feu de la Halha de Nadau, is on 22 December.
DORDOGNE
Lights, music and action can be found at the fabulous Sarlat-la-Canéda Christmas market and ice skating rink from 4 to 31 December. Brantôme combines its Marché de Noël with Métiers d’Art on 16/17 November and, on the same dates, you can visit Chancelade and Sainte Pomport. Saint-Nexans brings a jingle on 23/24 November and Creysse goes festive on 30 November and 1 December. Lalinde market opens for a week from 1 December, and Eymet is on the 14th, Biron on 14/15th, Ribérac on 15/16th and Neuvic on 22 December, with Domme offering the last of the Christmas markets on Boxing Day.
LOT ET GARONNE
The Christmas spirit starts in Fongrave on 24 November, closely followed by Danazan, Frégimont, Layrac and La Sauvetat-du-Dropt on 1 December. There will be no break for Santa as he’s back out at Castillones on 2/3 December, and Aiguillon and Pont du Casse on 7/8 December – come on, he’s magic and can be in more than one place at once! That’s a good job as he will also be at Pujols on 7/8 December, Duras on 8 December, Beauville on 14th and Castillones from 14th to 16th. Astaffort market is happening on the 15th and Casteljaloux is planning three days of market festivities from 20 December.

LOT
Promising two magical days on 8/9 December, Carennac is adding street entertainment, jazz and a magician to its festivities and, with Advent in mind, you might see a donkey walking in the Marché de Noël at Saint Cirq Lapopie on 21/22 December. Cahors lights up in magnificent style with a night market on 22 November, followed by two days of stalls and fun for everyone. The entertaining, two-day artisanal Christmas market at Gourdon starts on 30 November, with Figeac on 14 and 15 December and Bretenoux on the 15th.
GERS
Music, glittering decorations, regional products, gaufres and crêpes, vin chaud and other traditional goodies are exactly what you expect when visiting a Christmas market, and Condom is sure not to disappoint on 13/15 December. Similarly, Marciac and Lectoure are both holding their traditional festivities on 7 and 8 December, with Mirande following later in the month on the 21st and 22nd. Cologne is preparing for Christmas early with its market on 24 November and those last minute gifts can be picked up at Ségoufielle on 22 December and Gimont on both 22 and 29 December.
TARN ET GARONNE
Take to the ice and enjoy the music, dancing and lots of surprises at Caussade’s glittering Marché de Noël on 7 and 8 December. Moissac and Montauban are being held on the same days, with Lavit de Lomagne and Labastide du Temple opening their markets on the 8th with fun for all the family. Montauban is also holding a vide atelier on 14 and 15 December, and St-AntoninNoble-Val welcomes local artisans with a fabulous choice of gifts on the 15th. Can’t wait until then? Bouillac and Finhan will both be visited by Santa on 24 November – well, we said he was magic!
N.HAUTE GARONNE
Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without the magnificent Toulouse Grande Marché de Noël from 22 November to 26 December with its animations, illuminations and fabulous creations. The Marché Artisanal from 7 to 23 December and the Marché d’Hiver des Créateurs on 14/15 and 21/22 bring additional ideas for presents, as does the Noël de l’Estrapade on the 14th. Christmas comes to Blagnac from 27 November to 1 December with dazzling illuminations, incredible food and all sorts of gifts, before Santa flies over to Fronton from 6 to 8 December.

LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS
As three local entrepreneurs ourselves, we are often asked to present the story about The Local Buzz and how it started. Lesley outlines how The Local Buzz turned from an idea into reality.
The Three Communicatears F
Our website includes a comprehensive regional Business Directory, pages of What’s On, Blogs, Area Information and the magazine can also be read online.
riends for several years, the three of us have very different personalities and backgrounds but we all share one thing, a love of SW France. One day in October 2017, Jeanette approached me with the idea of creating a local magazine that would address the needs of people living in and around Lot et Garonne. Unbeknown to her, it was something that I had been looking at a few years earlier but circumstances had changed and it wasn’t progressed. That day, things were very different. We both felt that living here was not just about the department we lived in, but about the surrounding departments too. We talked for hours, about who the magazine would be for, where it would appear, what it would contain and, fairly quickly, decided that we wanted a website too. For that, we needed website expertise and we knew just the person.
The Fit
With a career in management accountancy, Jeanette moved here in 2013, running a very successful gite and B&B business. From that, she knew that there was nowhere near enough information available to either her family or her constant stream of guests about the region. She is also a whizz at e-marketing and social media and has significantly improved our awareness as a result. With a very steep learning curve for the magazine’s
44
distribution, she took up the mantle and we now have more collection points than we ever imagined. Until 2015 when she moved to France, Pamela had spent most of her life working in advertising and web media for corporations like Target and, having lived in Honolulu and USA, brought a stack of knowledge about moving and living here from outside the UK. She has a great eye for detail and can spot a buzzing image from a mile away. This has proved to be essential in the style and eye-catching design that runs through both the magazine and website. As for me, I had had more than 30 years in marketing, running my own agency specialising in PR, copywriting and advertising. In fact I brought clients with me to France when I moved here in 2003. This experience in all types of copywriting has come in handy when interviewing and writing about local entrepreneurs, creating some of the features and/or editing contributed copy, not to mention the proof-reading. I also have an electronics company which gave me experience in sales and customer record management.
The Process
A business plan was prepared as a result of research about the region, the demographics and the need for such a magazine. Having decided on the name, the

Time has passed so quickly since we joined Jack in the garden for a planning session
next step was to find a designer and we were very fortunate to come across Sarah Vernon. We met and briefed Sarah about our thoughts, wants and intentions and we clicked. She had a strong background in magazine design and agreed with our corporate positioning for something that was high end, glossy, visually creative, informative and fun. In a very short space of time and by working closely together, we had a style, a front cover, sample pages and the means to move onto the next stage, the website. Meanwhile, background work was essential to prepare a customer record management system (CRM). We set a goal of launching with a minimum of 2,500 business entries and set to work. Organisations were found online, in magazines, in newspapers and in telephone directories and, once checked and verified, were entered onto the database. A pre-launch email took care of the initial, essential GDPR requirements. It wasn’t all plain sailing, we did have a false start with a website company over a timing issue. Setting that aside, we discussed our plans with Theme, a company Jeanette had already used in the UK. They came to meet us in Bordeaux and we laid down the structure, the information architecture and set the goals. I can’t tell you how amazing it was to find yet another like-minded, forward thinking organisation and the guys at Theme
worked really hard, and well, to help us achieve our objectives. Of course, the website couldn’t come to life without imagery and text and we were preparing this too. Working with both the designer and website team, we were determined that the two forms of media had to mirror each other in style but be very different in content. The magazine is lifestyle focussed, informative and fun, and the website is where people to go to find a local business, listings of what’s on, books, articles, blogs and local information, etc.
Preparing for Launch
The magazine is free and is reliant on advertising revenue so it was essential that we had something to sell. So, next was the media pack and, with it, a PowerPoint sales presentation which included our first issue front cover, some dummy pages from both the magazine and website, and other relevant information. We are still so grateful to those first companies who trusted us and came into that first issue. The website launched In June, 2018, a month before the bi-monthly magazine which, thankfully, gave us time to finalise print and distribution, not to mention the final page layouts. We can still feel the euphoria of putting that first issue to

bed and receiving our first copies. Unbelievable!
Buzzing now and in the future
Right now, we are looking for someone to head up our sales activities and will soon be recruiting administrative help in line with our business plans for ongoing growth. Our postal subscribers are growing and we are now printing 20,000 copies, with an excellent volume of visitors and readers of the magazine online. The time has passed so quickly, it seems only 5-minutes ago that we were at the planning stage. Now, we are on the ninth issue and the website has over 3,700 business entries and hundreds of what’s on events. What’s more, we are delighted that we have had some incredibly positive feedback. Onwards and upwards – we’re still buzzing! www.thelocalbuzzmag.com

There’s more to financial planning than finances alone. A NDR EA G L O VE R INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL A DVISE R
FINDING THE RIGHT FINANCIAL PLANNING SOLUTION F
rom Yorkshire to Dordogne - Andrea Glover has come a long way since her younger days as part of a mining family in the north of England. With 16 years of initially working in the financial sector and qualifying as an adviser, specialising in mortgages, in the 1990s, Andrea then went on to become head of a franchise group in the conveyancing sector. Today, she works alongside Tony Delvalle at The Spectrum IFA Group in Eymet and is offering independent advice to clients of all ages and backgrounds. Her journey through the ranks has taught her that the provision of advice is not just about answering the right questions. It requires a deep understanding of clients’ needs and circumstances.
THE MOVE TO FRANCE
She explains “When I moved with my husband and youngest son to France in 2013, I knew it was important to seek guidance from an adviser who specialised in providing advice to UK expatriates in France. Tony was recommended to me and he advised us about how best we should transfer
and organise our affairs such as pensions, company shares, savings and the potential impact of capital gains on the disposal of our home in the UK. As a result, I know, first hand, just how complex it can be in a foreign country and I can absolutely empathise with my clients. I completely understand that we are dealing with their hard earned money and have direct experience of not only going through the financial planning process but, also, of trusting someone to provide us with the right advice.” Our full financial planning service incorporates everything from looking at tax efficient investments and pensions through to inheritance tax planning and mortgages. We have access to secure, tax-efficient, locally authorised investment solutions backed by some of the UK’s largest and most well-known financial institutions. These products, issued from the safety of Dublin, are both EU regulated and highly tax efficient. For example, one of the largest insurance companies in the UK offers a fully French compliant (Dublin based) Assurance Vie.
PLANNING IS KEY
“As part of any financial planning service”, Andrea adds, “it is essential that more than just the client’s assets and existing policies are considered. Personal plans for the future, the future care of children or elderly parents, business interests and preferred lifestyle all come into the equation. If there are areas outside of our own expertise, we have a number of strategic partners who specialise in tax reporting, cross border tax issues, wills, currency exchange and settlement services such as healthcare. This means that we can always point our clients in the right direction or will work hand in hand with a partner to offer a complete service and ensure the right result.” She concludes, “At the end of the day, financial planning should be about helping people to find the solution that is right for them now, as well as in the future. Should circumstances change, our in-depth knowledge of both the French financial system and our clients means that we are ready and able to help straight away.” www.spectrum-ifa.com

SEASONAL
Entertaining can be costly at this time of year so here are a few inexpensive ideas for some festive fun and sparkle.
Home-made crackers, Christmas bottles and bleached pine cones add a festive note
50
Often difficult to find in France, Crackers don’t have to be expensive or shipped in. There are plenty of instructions about how to make them online but, instead of trying to squash an oversized gift into an empty loo roll, why not pop a clue inside for a post-lunch search? You could also add a kazoo or harmonica for some merry tunes at the table. Decorate with flowers, foliage, ribbons, bows, cutouts, or you could draw merry snowmen faces and dress them with scarves and hats. Pine cones are fabulous painted with coloured spray, finished with glitter and placed in a basket by the fire. Or paint the cone edges with white “snow” and hang upside down. Bleached pine cones are pretty too. Use two parts bleach to one part water and put in a container, weigh the top to ensure they remain
submerged, and leave for 48 hours or more. Drain and place on paper towel until dry and opened up. Decorate with bows, bells, ferns and berries for a delightful centrepiece or hanging display.
Transformations
Let everyday objects unlock your creativeness and conjure up happy memories by spraying old keys and hanging them with pretty ribbon from the tree. Lightbulbs can also be turned into pretty tree ornaments with a swirl of colourful paint, glitter and bows. You’ll never look at an LED tea light in the same way again! Decorate with faces and add felt hats, scarves and earmuffs, then hang from the tree. Don’t forget those fruit and nuts! Fill a tall glass vase with walnuts for a nutty display (or, for something different and just a little nuts, you could

try Brussel Sprouts to give a quirky green effect). Enjoy a spicy aroma by tying ribbon around an orange (secure with pins at the top and base) and stud all over with cloves. Hang and/or place in a dish. Dried orange and lemon slices are great in a wreath at the front door, and a glass of orange liqueur would be something different for Santa.

Bright ideas
Remember those summer wine bottles and jam jars with lights? Add some holly with berries, greenery or tiny white balls to give them a Christmas make-over. For a stunning effect, place them next to icy snow puffs which are really simple to make. Just stick as many toothpicks as you can into foam balls, keeping the stick length the same, then spray the whole thing white. For an all-white angelic effect, spray empty bottles with white paint or glue and roll in white glitter. Use your garden urns or pots to create a festive welcome by topping with a foam circle or triangle studded with baubles, foliage and lights.
Starry starry bright is the aim when a large foam ball is wrapped round and round with fairy lights (secure with pins now and again). Use three balls together for a surreal effect. Paint the foam ball black or dark blue to create the appearance of a round ball of lights miraculously hanging in the night sky. Or carefully wrap around a balloon, then burst the balloon for a seethrough effect. Now that’s Christmas magic!
Stud oranges with cloves, make-over a garden urn, or create a globe of lights

SPORT
Snooker
stamina is a main requirement, as well as the ability to create opportunities and maximise them.
Snooker is probably more widely played in homes, holiday venues and bars than anywhere else here in France. Clubs are few and far between but the move to create more is growing thanks to La Fédération Française de Billard (FFB).
MAKING THE BREAK Behind every game, or frame as it is known, is the desire to make the best break during a single visit to the table, the maximum of which is a score of 147 points. This is when a red ball is potted, followed by a colour of the player’s choice (which, if potted, is then placed back on its starting position), then another red, another colour etc., until all the reds have been potted. At that point the coloured balls, which are no longer returned to the table, must be potted in the order of value (lowest first). As and when a player misses a shot/pot, the play passes to his/her opponent. The player with the highest score wins the frame. In addition, there are various fouls which award points to opponents such as when potting the white (cue ball) or hitting a coloured instead of a red because your opponent has left you no legal ball to play and you have been well and truly snookered.
FRENCH PROS On the professional circuit, although French players compete in world tournaments, French professional snooker is lagging behind the UK, China, Thailand, Belgium, Holland, Germany and Poland. In fact, the last time that France hosted a ranking pro tournament was in the 1988/89 European Open during the European Masters. That said, the French team of Jérémy Bury, Brian Ochoiski and Fabio Rizzi took third place in the 2019 World Team Trophy in Paris earlier this year, and Alexis Callewaert won gold at the Snooker 6 Reds European Championships for the first time in the history of French ranking records. ON THE RISE Despite its global popularity the game of snooker has, until now, been struggling to develop in France. As a result of FFB initiatives, this is starting to change and there are now regional competitions leading up to the finals of the Championnats de France, including championships for women, in preparation for the world stage. As well as additional venues and coaches, it is hoped that more snooker courses (stages) will follow, allowing players to improve their techniques, tactics, mental attitude and even nutrition. With long games, which can be the best of nine, 17 or 19 in tournament finals, and up to 35 frames in world championships,
UPCOMING EVENTS Whilst the bid was turned down for the 2020 event, we are still waiting to see if snooker will be played at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Meanwhile, extensive television coverage ensures that we can continue to enjoy the run up to the World Championships next year with the first prestigious Triple Crown event, the Betway UK Championship from 26 November to 8 December, followed by the Masters over the coming months.

Table Tennis or Ping Pong? Originating in the 1800’s when the upper classes would strike a champagne cork or golf ball with a book across the dining table, divided by a pile of books, in a game of “Whiff- Whaff”, the Ping Pong (PP) game was trademarked by the London games company, J Jaques & Son, in 1901. Derived from the sound made by the ball rebounding off the racquets, the amusing title helped to spread its fame, quickly travelling across the UK, America and the rest of the world. In 1926, the Table Tennis (TT) name was trademarked by the International Table Tennis Federation and the game became an official sport for two or four players. THE GAME An Olympic event since 1988, when played at the national and international level the competitive game of TT is particularly exciting and exhilarating to watch, and exhausting for the players. Rallies, or Lets as they are known, require dexterity, lightning fast reactions and quick feet. The often not quite so competitive TT/PP version, played between families, friends and social clubs, offers a more fun, carefree activity that can be enjoyed indoors or out. The standard equipment includes a table (fixed, folding, or moveable with wheels), the net, hollow balls and a bat, paddle or racquet. The type of racquet is important, with certain finishes giving slow to medium spin and speed and others, which can also be customised, allowing increased spin and a faster pace. Practice is essential and a robot practice partner is ideal for clubs and keen players. Despatching a range of serve sequences as well as top, back, side spin and float combinations, it can also

TABLE TENNIS IN FRANCE Although Japan, China, Hungary and Scandinavian countries dominate the World Table Tennis Championships, France took gold in the men’s singles in 1993 with Jean-Philippe Gatien and, in 1977, Jacques Secrétin and Claude Bergeret won the mixed doubles. Interestingly, the 2020 World Veterans Championship (WVC) which will be held in Bordeaux next June is organised by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Table Tennis Association under the supervision of the Fédération Française de Tennis de Table (FFTT). MENTAL HEALTH M
Mental health – two words that encompass a whole range of conditions w understanding. Here we look at dementia as well as RTT, a different pa
DEMENTIA
Dementia, in its many forms, can be difficult to live with, let alone understand. Chris Grasby from Association France Alzheimer Dordogne, looks at this distressing condition. First of all, there isn’t a difference, as such, between dementia and Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia. There are others in this “family” of problems, including dementia with Lowey Bodies and vascular dementia to name just two. All have different causes and different symptoms, but all are physical deteriorations of the brain through one of a number of mechanisms that cause memory impairment and behavioural changes. The actual causes of dementia are not yet known. Nor are there any available cures. Set against the background of recent well publicised failures to develop new medication, there is now a focus on the importance of the earliest possible diagnosis. Existing drugs can delay the development of symptoms. It is thought that if these drugs could be prescribed much, much earlier they would be much more effective in delaying the disease. This demands greater awareness of the subtle and slow changes in the early stages of dementia. Since many of us will be affected as the population ages, what more can we do to understand it better? How we react to the personality changes and idiosyncratic
54
behaviour the disease brings is a key to a better life. There are classic symptoms, but no predictable ways in which they develop. Anger and violence are not inevitable. However, unpredictable behaviour may leave friends wary. All too often the carer becomes isolated as they struggle to cope. It’s important that we all remember that talking about the problems and remaining supportive of family and friends is vital. The challenges of repeated questioning and erratic behaviour often lead couples into conflict. But try this simple set of rules: • don’t ask direct questions, • don’t interrupt, • don’t contradict. It’s important that someone with dementia should not be reminded of their failings. It’s difficult, as many events in an unfolding day will need decisions and action. The France Alzheimer Association and its support groups offer help to those with dementia, and to their carers who bear the brunt of support for their loved ones day to day, whilst ensuring access to social and medical care. In the meantime we wait for a cure. For the moment, there are many sources of advice available to reduce the risk of the onset of dementia, many centred on lifestyle issues such as exercise, diet and activities. Interestingly, they do say that one of the best ways to stimulate brain activity is to learn a foreign language! www.francealzheimer.org/dordogne

RAPID TRANSFORMATIONAL THERAPY (RTT)
Maaike Beckers of Metamind tells us about how we can take a different path to mental freedom. Having to deal with any issue that’s holding you back, causing you emotional or physical pain is hard work and stops you from living the life you deserve. More and more people now realise the benefits of having therapy to resolve these issues. A new and pioneering therapy is Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT), designed by Marisa Peer, therapist and best-selling author with 30 years of experience in this field. RTT embraces many of the positive aspects of proven therapy techniques. What makes RTT different from other treatments is that with the help of hypnosis you will be able to find the root cause of the limiting belief that is holding you back. These beliefs are often formed a long time ago and can
still cause behaviour that now no longer serves you. With RTT you can change these beliefs with simple steps to produce life-changing results. During the RTT process, you will find what is holding you back, work on letting it go and replace it with thoughts, images and beliefs that will serve you and enable you to live the life that you deserve. In most cases only one session is required, combined with listening to a personalized audio tape for 21 days. Counselling throughout this process is provided. This therapy can be used for a variety of issues, such as mental well-being, physical, relationship or performance issues. www.metamind.nl

Samantha J The pressure is on. Do I return to see the family at “home” or do I stay here in France and risk their disapproval? I haven’t managed to spend a Christmas in France yet and have friends I would love to share it with. Hi Samantha Ah yes, the annual problem of spreading oneself

too thinly! Only you really know the level, if there would indeed be one, of disapproval you would receive from your “home” family but perhaps the answer might be to celebrate it twice, as many of us do over here. As you are aware, Christmas per se in France is generally pretty quiet (outside of the cities) and it can in fact be a

bit disappointing, especially for children. Traditionally, the French start to celebrate on Christmas Eve (Le Réveillon), often with the meal going on late into the evening when, at around midnight, the children are finally allowed to open their presents. The Christmas markets here are, of course, definitely worth a visit but they will be around for most of the festive period so you can visit them at any time. So, why not Christmas itself at “home” and a “do” with friends

George R I keep finding myself shying away from preparing my will here in France. I have a UK version but the idea of a French one seems so complicated. What is the actual process? Can we simply translate the English will? A notaire told me they had to verify ownership of everything first.

not even need witnesses. To ensure the will cannot be mislaid it is advisable to register it with the “fichier central des dispositions de dernières volontés”. It is often recommended to have a separate will in France if you own property here and even though a UK will is recognised in France, if it contains notions of “trust” or “executors” then this can cause unnecessary complications. In the case of the existence of a discretionary trust, it could also even have high tax implications. With the European Succession Regulation, if you live in France you can elect your national

Your will can even be written in English or the language of your choice, it does not have to be in French. It is always advisable to seek advice from a specialist before drafting and lodging your will.

JUST DRONING
A tongue-in-cheek look at...
d d
d
Christmas
d...from the editor. I
n the words of Queen, “I want to break free”. You know what, I just can’t. I blame my children (now in their twenties) but unless certain things are the same, it just isn’t Christmas. So the run up will see me pouring over food magazines, searching for that innovative, unctuous trifle to go in my grandma’s crystal bowl, or a new take on the Christmas pud and, of course, a fun idea for decorating the cake, but which cake recipe? Despite my best intentions, it will end the same way as every other
year with an expedition to find currants, suet and barley wine for our traditional family favourites. It’s different with the decorations though. Oh yes, I may have a shed full of boxes but we all need a refresher or two – the latest gizmos in lights, shiny new balls and something to brighten up
outside. Remember the craze for Father Christmas climbing up the drainpipe? Well I bought a life-sized one and he still comes out, year after year, sitting on a sun lounger by the pool – after all his hard work he deserves a break! I always join him at some point with a glass of bubbles (here we go with tradition again), leaving
“I bought a life-sized Père Noël and he still comes out, year after year, sitting on a sun lounger by the pool”
the (empty, I’m not that mad) bottle with him so he looks like he’s having a great time. One year a deer wandered into the garden near where he was lounging – now that was truly surreal! What are your traditions I wonder? Do you go off with a ladder in search of mistletoe? It may be plentiful but it’s always so out of reach! Have you given up on finding a “proper” turkey that will feed 25 even though there are only eight at the table? Have you started making your own crackers? I used to do that using empty toilet rolls but finding the gifts to fit inside proved to be too limiting. It would have to be one sock not two, and my dad didn’t really like the pink lipstick and nail varnish he finished up with one year either! Don’t even ask about the jokes! “Father Christmas came in wet and his wife said reindeer?”, or “What happens to naughty elves? Santa gives them the sack!” Ho, Ho, Ho! Then there are the games and how people play them. A property game is one of our traditions but it can be a minefield. A friend actually turned up one year with their own funds hidden down their sock! So we hunted out other versions with different “money” but the hotels and houses were the same and would miraculously appear in the blink of an eye. “C’est terrible”. I was once even offered a bribe not to “out” a cheater. Going back to “I want to break free”, that was also a frequent occurrence when they had been sent “straight to jail”. Hilarious! I hope you aren’t picking up any tips! Traditional or not, have a wonderful, very happy Christmas.
See you next year . . .
