NEWSWORTHY “Malibu is a unique land and marine environment and residential community whose citizens have historically evidenced a commitment to sacrifice urban and suburban conveniences in order to protect that environment and lifestyle, and to preserve unaltered natural resources and rural characteristics” - The Malibu General Plan Vision
Statement.
The Malibu Coalition for Slow Growth (MCSG) was formed when Malibu became a city. It comments on selected development projects and it is concerned with both preserving the natural environment and keeping the small town feeling that makes Malibu so special. How ,what, when and where building takes place is a main concern of the Coalition and it works to ensure that any proposed large commercial or large residential development conforms to the codes that were put into place to protect Malibu and its fragile infrastructure. On July 13th the Malibu City Council had received the letter (below) from the Malibu Coalition For Slow Growth along with sentiments of Malibu residents who attended the standing room only City Council meeting in regard for the proposed build out of one commercial property in the Civic Center. After hearing all of the comments concerning the project, the council in a 4-1 vote certified the EIR, approved the Specific Plan for the Shopping Center and voted to place this development on the November ballot for approval or disapproval by the voters in accordance with Measure R. Skylar Peak was the only council person who voted against the project because it didn’t conform to the city codes.( I suggest u ask Skylar what were his reasons) With the Councils approval, the commercial shopping building project can now be put on the November ballot to be voted on by residence in the city of Malibu as a result of Measure R which residence unanimously voted (60 - 40 ) for during the last election. The Local Malibu believes the residents of Malibu may be interested in reading the comment letter below which clearly points out many of the criticisms that residents have about this commercial project that will impact Malibu well into the future. The actual letter is 22 pages long and we will be publishing sections of the letter in the build up to the election so that voters can read what the Council took into consideration or did not take into consideration in their decision. The Coalition’s comments were based on public documents and information found in the city files. The final approval to go ahead with the Proposed shopping mall and the park is out of the hands of the Council now and in the hands of voters in November. Being informed is every voters responsibility. TO: MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL CONCERNING AGENDA ITEM 4B CROSS CREEK SHOPPING CENTER INTRODUCTION The Malibu Coalition For Slow Growth hopes the Council will take the time to read these lengthy comments to understand another perspective with respect to the Shopping Center before you and the negative environmental impact it will have on the Civic Center area. The Council is the ultimate custodian of the Malibu environment. The city can’t expect the residents to be familiar with the MMC, LCP, General Plan and this EIR. The Council should make decisions in the best interest of the community by requiring a project that conforms to the environmentally protective provisions LCP, MMC and General Plan. We ask the Commission not to recommend approval of any of the matters before you until this applicant modifies its project to come into alignment with the General Plan and codes that were put in place to have an orderly build out of the Civic Center and City. The applicant should be required to redesign the project accordingly. This EIR and Specific Plan fails to give the Council as the decision makers in many instances a realistic picture of this proposed project. At this point in time the public and the decision makers must have a complete and accurate EIR before them that actually analyzes all the important issues. This EIR makes too many blanket statements without real analysis, many statements are not accurate and many are biased in favor of the project rather than remaining neutral. The staff report barely touches on the EIR which the Council is being asked to certify. The Specific Plan paints a cheerful picture of a project which doesn’t fit the site at this location and conform to the General Plan and LCP. If the Council is not willing to recommend denying without prejudice this project as currently proposed, the decision on it needs to be postponed for more information in the form of a supplemental EIR. OWNERSHIP The ownership of the property is not as simple as is stated. The owner is DB Malibu Holdings LLC. As a holding company they either own or have the controlling interest in the Park at Cross Creek LLC. It is their Corporation. The mailing address of DB Malibu Holding is the same as Fortress Capital Finance LLC, a major private equity firm with offices in New York City.. The President of DB Malibu Holding LLC is Constantine M. Dakolias, the Managing Director of Fortress Capital Finance LLC. The operating member of the partnership is Malibu WF, LLC (Steve Soberoff ),and FCOI Holding ,LLC is the managing member. DB Malibu Holdings LLC as owner has authorized Steve Soberoff, Ron Goldman and Marni Randall to act in its behalf. We mention this only because the popular belief is that Steve Soberoff is the owner of this property rather than just its public face. Rather the real owner is Fortress, one of the largest private equity firm around. As a Private Equity firm, it only cares about maximizing its investment and doesn’t care about how their investment effect Malibu and its way of life.. POSTPONEMENT Just a few of the reasons why recommendation for this EIR and CDP is premature: 1. Since this project is piggybacking on the La Paz traffic mitigation measures, these traffic mitigation measures must be decided first especially since there are other possible solutions to the traffic situation. 2. Realistic Alternatives should selected by the Council and analyzed. The request for proposals asked that a smaller market/ smaller structures be the alternatives but oddly enough these alternatives were not analyzed for the Council and public review. 3. Important information is lacking about when the 800,000 gallon water tank will be operational. 4. The applicant submitted a Lighting Plan which is on page 2.0-26 and is not legible and does not go into the needed detail. If this project is approved the lighting plan will be approved without careful analysis of its pros and cons and it will not be subject to the cities dark sky ordinance which is being prepared. ( Page 3-2-18 ) 5. A master sign program was also submitted by the developer but is not discussed in the EIR, or Specific Plan. But on page 14 of the CDP resolution it is mentioned as part of the project description. Hence Council will be approving it by approving the CDP without Council or Planning Commission review. The Planning Commission recommended that the Council not approve the master sign program. 6. The various plans including the lighting plan, landscape plans and the fire department plan are not legible and need to recirculated in a legible form for interested public and decision makers review and understanding. 7. There is no final fuel modification plan approved by the fire department. Therefore, we have no way of knowing how severely the canopies of the trees will be trimmed and if the trees can be planted in the areas shown to create the proposed imaginary/imaginative landscape lot area coverage which by it definition clearly violates the MMC and LCP requirement that 40% of the lot area be covered by Landscaping. We don’t even know if the admitted proposed 12.8% of the lot area landscaping will be allowed by the fire department due to fuel modification or if the so called green walls will be allowed on structures 8. And for all the other reasons stated throughout the following comments. Stay Tuned for a continuing series in the next editions of The Local Malibu

NEWSWORTHY NEWS BLOTTER SOMEONE SET A FIRE IN CORRAL CANYON ROAD FRIDAY NIGHT, AUG. 28. IT MAY HAVE BEEN A CIGARETTE OUT THE WINDOW. MAYBE AN ARSON. AT 9:47 P.M. … KBU MOBILE UNIT 1 CAME ACROSS AN OPEN FLAME … AS GRASS BURNED ON THE HILLSIDE. A CAR SPED OFF IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. ABOUT 400 SQUARE FEET WERE ON FIRE .. OR SMOLDERING. SHUFFLED FEET KNOCKED DOWN THE BURNING GRASS. A MAN AND WOMAN ALSO USED AN WITH AN ICE CHEST FULL OF WATER . TO PUT OUR EMBERS.… IT TOOK 14 MINUTES FOR FIRE ENGINE 71 TO ARRIVE. 400 SQUARE FEET OF GRASSLAND BURNED. CAUSE … UNDER INVESTIGATION. The Local Malibu has found out that the first person on the scene, who wishes not to be identified, bravely and quickly tried to snuff out the fire by stomping the burning grass while wearing shorts and sandals . Desperate in more ways than one, after a 5-hour drive and two cans of iced tea, this guy had the bright idea of emptying his bladder on the smoldering grass. Not smart. The steam singed his leg hairs. Lesson learned. Shuffling through the ashes like a choochoo train made his Teva sandals no longer usable for formal beach parties. Big 5 had a big sale and he is happily reshod for the fall season. On behalf of The Local and grateful residents, we would like to offer him a new pair of sandals. Had the fire occurred on a windy Santa Ana night, no one person could have prevented a potentially devastating brushfire that would have threatened structures on the way to the ocean. The next day, The Local counted 62 cigarette butts on the pull out within 50 feet of the grass fire even though numerous signs are posted that smoking in the canyon is prohibited by law.

RISK OF RODENT POISON POLLUTION IS INCREASED WITH FORECASTED EL NINO EL-NIÑO COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF TOXIC PESTICIDE CONTAMINATION AT POPULAR SO-CAL BEACHES The massive El Niño currently in the forecast may increase the risk that California beaches will be inundated with poisonous runoff from the continued use of rodenticides and other pesticides in the Coastal Zone, and rodenticide use at Malibu High School, located less than half a mile from world famous Zuma Beach, is an example of the problem. The California Coastal Commission and organizations like Heal the Bay have worked to improve and protect water quality, but runoff contaminated with pesticides remains a major issue, especially in ecologically sensitive areas like Malibu, which has more than 20 miles of coastline and some of Southern California’s most popular beaches.
Devastating floods in EL NINO year 1938 produced death tolls reaching over 100 and devastating environmental consequences.
The Healthy School Act of 2000 triggered a movement to implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies rather than use toxic pesticides in schools throughout California. Yet even with this law and the growing awareness of the dangers of rodenticides, a school district in a city know for being progressive and “green” chose to use rodenticides on their school properties after children returned to school. This decision was met with extreme criticism not only from the community but from national organizations. Since 2011, local Malibu groups have educated the community and kept a watchful eye on the actions of the City of Malibu and the local school district. Poison Free Malibu (PoisonFreeMalibu.org), a non-profit environmental organization, has made a major impact by creating an education campaign and working with Malibu and other communities in Southern California to not only ban rodenticides, but to practice effective IPM strategies instead of using poisons. IPM strategies call for cleanliness, non-toxic insecticides, trapping methods and exclusion—sealing entry points, and using fencing and wire mesh to keep out rodents such as ground squirrels and gophers. All non-toxic IPM strategies must be completely exhausted before the use of any toxic pesticides can be considered.
Topanga flood devastation in 1979, a similar scenario could happen in Malibu with the El Nino weather pattern predicted for this winter.
ENVIRONMENT Many cities have remained completely poison free by using various IPM strategies. Poisons not only harm target species, but also “non-targeted” animals, humans and our water supply. That’s why many in the community were in shock when the Santa Monica-Malibu School District (SMMUSD) Superintendent Sandra Lyon ordered the use of highly toxic strychnine and Fumitoxin at Malibu High School and Webster Elementary School. During the past four months, in a concerted effort to maintain a poison free environment for children, the community, and wildlife, Poison Free Malibu, along with the non-profit organization America Unites for Kids (www. AmericaUnites.com) worked with the SMMUSD and the City of Malibu to offer alternative solutions. Representatives of these organizations, together with IPM experts, toured Malibu High School to assessed the situation. After viewing the campus, Matthew Mills, owner of the licensed IPM practicing pest management company Nature-Cide, stated, “In my opinion, it looks like the campus has never practiced any IPM strategies at all. The place looks like a construction zone. It’s a wreck.” Mills said he asked the district’s IPM manager, Terrance Venable, why he was not doing the things required to meet the IPM strategy. Venable replied that he does not have the budget. Mills said he offered to treat the areas where fleas were apparent at no cost to the school. According to Mills, he never heard back from the district. Weeks later, the district applied highly toxic rodenticides at the school. The district informed parents that there was an uncontrollable gopher problem. What is most disturbing is that the district decided to do this after children started back at school rather than during the 12 weeks of summer break.
Natures perfect rodent controller sits atop a MHS fence ready to prey on gophers the morning that the ballfields were poisoned.
A poor coyote struggles to survive after not knowing that the rodents he was consuming were poisoned by rodenticide poisons.
This same school, Malibu High, has tested positive for high levels of Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs). This highly toxic group of chemicals, banned by Congress in 1976, is found throughout the campus in building materials like caulking. Testing revealed that MHS’s PCB levels are 11,000 times the legal limit. A large number of teachers have reported thyroid disease and thyroid cancer. Alumni and children have also reported cancer and health issues. Media reports chronicle SMMUSD Superintendent Lyon’s efforts to prevent a full investigation and the removal of PCBs from the school. For a third school year, Lyon is forcing students and teachers into toxic classrooms. America Unites for Kids and PEER—Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (peer.org), have filed a citizen suit under the Toxic Substance Control Act in Federal Court to ensure the district removes all PCBs from Malibu High and the adjoining Juan Cabrillo Elementary school. It seems that SMMUSD’s Lyon and the board of education are not doing their jobs to protect children at all costs and are deceiving the community with claims that PCBs won’t hurt them and that the rodenticides, aren’t a health risk, despite extensive EPA findings that both are harmful. The local wildlife population is also at risk from the SMMUSD’s chemical use. Rodenticides are known to harm “non-targeted” wildlife, including mountain lions, bobcats, hawks and owls. Extensive research in the Santa Monica Mountains sponsored by the National Park Service has revealed the catastrophic toll these chemicals are taking on many native species, and the water at our local beaches is also at risk from the use of rodenticides and other toxins. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, there is a greater than 90 percent chance that El Niño conditions will persist through the winter, and meteorologists and scientists all over the world are predicting that this will be one of the biggest El-Niño events in recorded history to hit the California coast. Runoff from storm events carries pesticide residue directly into the ocean. At Malibu High School, toxins don’t have far to travel. The beach is at the end of the street. The SMMUSD is risking the health and well-being of the children and community in Malibu with their continued use of highly toxic pesticides, and they are potentially creating a significant harmful impact on local wildlife and the ocean. “The use of highly toxic rodenticides by the school district is a step backwards” says Jennifer deNicola, President of America Unites for Kids, in a letter to SMMUSD, “One that the Malibu community is not going to stand for.” The community plans to voice their opinions at the Sept 17th SMMUSD board meeting in Santa Monica; you can email brd@smmmusd.org to submit your comments. Please visit America Unites on Facebook and sign a petition in efforts to put an end to the poisoning. To learn more about this topic visit their websites.

SIGNS of INTELLIGENCE? STORY AND PHOTOS BY STEVE WOODS
Despite what our our city officials and traffic engineers tell us, more and more yearly traffic congestion is clogging our PCH with stop and go, bumper to bumper commutes that slow us down but it has given us more time to observe our surroundings and newly posted signs. Signs can relay valuable information and warn us of impending dangers, while others can be profoundly contradictory ( even comical ) and clue us in to LOCAL trends. Thank goodness several of these signs ( photo #1) have been posted along PCH in Malibu just so we know where we are. It’s a good thing we have bureaucrats in Sacramento that make sure our tax dollars are spent on really important signage otherwise we could all make the mistake that we are on the Atlantic Coast. For some reason these Pacific Coast signs ( right ) displayed at Bonsall, Morning View Drive and Encinal Canyon are only displayed for traffic heading up the coast toward Ventura. People heading down the coast toward Santa Monica are not privy to the same information. Since our school systems seem to be failing our students,”Northern Hemisphere” signs may be in the works to be posted near heavily used intersections of Southern California

Several days before school started, these signs ( photo #2 ) were posted at the Malibu High School but the red tail hawks, owls and gopher snakes did not read the notice by Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s about its enemy number one, the gophers that will be gassed out of existence by using the WW I-style warfare overkill approach to pest management ( photo #3 ).

You might think that the City of Malibu’s resolution opposing the use of dangerous and deadly rodenticides and the fact the municipality is in the process of developing a citywide rodenticide ban like the one recently approved for the Santa Monica Mountains in unincorporated Los Angeles County would be enough to convince the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District that the pest management version of carpet bombing might not be the best approach for its schools, but it wasn’t. The same school district that has been in hot water over it’s attempt to sweep epic levels of PCB contamination at Malibu High School under the rug, decided to use Fumitoxin—pellets of aluminum phosphide that combine with moisture to release deadly phosphine gas, to kill a few gophers. Never mind that these toxic poisons will be washed into the Marine Protection Area during the next wet season or that there have been incidences of children dying from Fumitoxins and Strychnine poisons.

The new $5 .5 million Dan Blocker Beach Memorial parking lot and rest room has been the only place in Malibu that has had consistent available parking along our 27 miles of crowded beauty this summer. Even with historically high volumes of traffic and visitors attendance at State and County beaches no one has witnessed one than one car for more than 5 minutes at the spanking new facility.

A SIGN OF OUR FUTURE? The high tech pay station that accepts credit cards only requires 25 cents for 10 minutes yet once any one has read the dozens of signs that clutter the parking lot, horizon and railings, one realizes that there is no beach access down the steep dangerous cliff to the small sandy beach and drive away immediately. Dan Blocker was appropriately named for blocking the public’s view of the ocean from this once pristine coastal bluff. One sign even blocks the view of its own entrance sign. How the Coastal Commission allowed so many signs to block a public view shed of this coastal bluff is astounding but then just recently The Coastal Commission just accepted a $2 million pay-off from developers to block the publics view of the coast from Bluffs Park. It is estimated that if the pay station at Dan Blocker was able to collect a dollar a year in parking revenues that it will take 5.5 million years to break even but it is hard to imagine that cars will still be in existence or even that mankind will have survived ( Photos 4 & 5 ). In case you haven’t noticed, there has been an outbreak infestation of bright red ‘For Lease’ Signs by Jay Luchs in the windows of commercial properties ( photo #6 ) throughout the city of Malibu from Topanga to Trancas. Especially hit hard by this illness is mid town Malibu where more and more business are shutting their doors. It is not clear why so many commercial business buildings are succumbing to the bright red rashes but many large commercial buildings are on subsidized life support without showing any redness and are collecting dust anyway. Are all of these businesses folding because they believe the city traffic engineers that traffic has been decreasing over the last 20 years? With hundreds of thousands of square feet of empty commercial buildings sitting idle it is a good thing the city approved the EIR for a new strip mall in the civic center based on flawed traffic data. And it is a good thing the city extended its traffic consultant contract for another year and hired a building expediter from Schmitz and Associates to fast tract building plans so we can have more commercial spaces collecting dust for out of town developers. Meanwhile Granita which has been in a coma for more than a decade had a pulse of life with a rumor that Howdy’s , who “tapped out“ of the Country Mart, may take over Granita’s artsy exterior but that pulse has faded and the patient has lapsed back into a red colored Jay Luchs coma. With great sadness ( and now no ability to run out and pick up an iphone 6 charger ) Radio Shack has left us without anyone to help the technologically challenged residents and our valuable Artifact Tree still remains uprooted without a place to be transplanted in Malibu ( Photos 7 & 8 ). Out of town building contractors and carpenters in pick up trucks are still driving around Malibu Coast Animal Hospital ( photo #9 ), Cross Creek and PCH asking pedestrians if the plywood and 2x4s are somewhere near or behind the James Perse Building. That sign has been a cruel joke to local residents and naive contractors for quite awhile and by the way, Yosemite, owned James Perse, has left the Country Mart, while Theodore Beach has succumbed to Jay Luchs signs of redness. Where do a start with this one ? Lets start with the Whole Foods Corporate website. For those interested in investing in a WF franchise, the number one recommendation is that there be a population base of 200,000 within a 20 minute drive! Okay so we all know that Malibu has a population base of 13,000 . So as I see it, a Malibu Whole Foods would be on a collision course with reality and it is not a matter of IF a Whole foods will Fail and break a possible lease, it is a matter of WHEN a Whole Foods realizes it cannot be profitable in Malibu. Malibu residents already dread going near Cris Crossed Creek Road during peak hours of traffic so why would residents stop shopping at PC Greens, Ralphs Vintage Grocers, Pavillions, Vital Zuman and the Farmers Market that cater to resident organic health food needs to deal with Civic Center congestion? So what will the name on the sign of the Soberoff Strip Mall be when a Whole Foods taps out? I sure hope the Measure R issue of November ballet does NOT name the hedge fund / Soberoff strip mall project as the Whole Foods and the Vertical Park unless Whole Foods is officially willing to commit to a 20-50 year lease no matter how unprofitable it will be.

BE FIRE PREPARED
NOW
STORY AND PHOTOS BY STEVE WOODS Beware of the extreme fire threat that is now elevated for the Malibu community. The County of Los Angeles Fire Dept has just sent out a letter to residents in the wildland-urban interface areas of Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains by Daryl Osby, Fire Chief Forester and Fire Warden in an urgent warning concerning the severity of drought conditions and fire potential. The devastating risk of fire has significantly increased due to years of drought, high temperatures , low humidity especially as Santa Ana Season quickly approaches during the weeks of September. Northern California has been impacted by one disastrous fire after another and it just a matter of time when we will be in extreme danger. While we are urged to cut water usage, the Fire Chief is encouragingthose in fire prone areas to “Judiciously water plants and ornamental vegetation and remove all dead material “ around structures. Anyone who hikes our canyons can see that our trees and wildland brush are stressed. Even our Sycamore trees that are rooted in canyons near creeks are stressed from a lack of sufficient ground water. Drought resistant Eucalyptus trees are dying. Solstice Creek and Nicholas Creeks which the Chumash depended on as one of the only two creeks in Malibu to have water during the worst of droughts have gone subterranean and the riparian habitats are showing signs of stress. Its been 8 years now since the last devastating fires that claimed 53 homes in just the Corral Fire and the vegetation has already grown back to dangerous fuel conditions. HOW TO KEEP TREES ALIVE IN THE DROUGHT : In times of drought, our trees need our help. When we cut down on watering our landscapes, our trees suffer. A tree may look healthy, but without regular watering it can become stressed and die. Look around your neighborhood. Stressed trees are everywhere: dry and sparse leaf coverage, dead and dying branches. When it comes to sharing our water, trees should be our priority! WATERING YOUNG TREES How often: About once a week. How much: About 15-20 gallons of water (3 or 4 5-gallon buckets). How to do it: Create a 3–4 foot wide basin around the tree to hold the water. Use a bucket to deliver water slowly into the basin. WATERING MATURE TREES How often? About once or twice a month. How much: Water needs to soak down at least 18”. Measure using a “soil probe” available at home improvement stores. The size of the tree and kind of soil will determine how much water is needed. How to do it: If you can, use “in-line emitter tubing hose” found at home improvement stores. Start about 9” from the trunk. Spiral it outward, forming concentric circles out to the drip line. Consult the store specialist for how to connect to your water source. Run it until the water depth is at least 18” (this could take 1 or more hours). CHECK FIRST! Dig your finger down into the soil at least four inches and check for moisture. If the soil below ground is still wet, don’t water. If it is dry, give the tree water. USE CAPTURED WATER! Collect excess water from indoor use – put a bucket in the shower while it warms up! Or install a series of rain barrels or a cistern to collect rain water. MULCH! Add a four inch layer of mulch or wood chips covering the soil around the tree. If used, cover the in-line emitter hose as well. The Los Angeles County Fire dept continues to take every precaution and are urging every resident to be prepared in developing a READY! Set! Go! You can use regular tomatoes of course, and remember that Heirloom tomatoes have a shorter life than regular ones. Provencal salt is Sea salt mixed with Herb de Provence and of course its optional. You can make your own! Make the tower wider at the bottom and a little smaller at the top so it holds its shape better. 3 pretty heirloom tomatoes (ripe) 2 avocados 8oz Burrata mozzarella 1 small shallot 1oz Basil 1 tsp of lemon juice (for the avocados) 1tbsp Balsamic vinegar 1large tbsp olive oil Provencal Salt (or kosher or Himalayan sea salt) and crushed pepper
ALL INGREDIENTS AVAILABLE AT PC GREENS 22601 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265 310.456.0353
1. Cut the tomatoes in thin slices. 2. Cut the avocados in slices and add a tsp of lemon juice to keep the bright green color. Mince the shallot. Slice the mozzarella. 3. First place 2 slices of tomatoes at the bottom, a couple of leaves of basil, add the mozzarella on the top, basil again, followed with the avocado slices (2). Repeat the operation until it takes the shape of a pretty tower. Sprinkle the shallots, a few drops of balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Sprinkle the Provencal salt, and the crushed pepper. VOILA!

BY MONICA PALUCH The Reboot Movement is a new fitness and wellness retreat in Point Dume that focuses on optimal health. We believe in a holistic approach based on a deep belief that when you are healthy, happy and well nourished, you will enjoy all aspects of life to the fullest and truly become your ultimate self. Nutrition is one of the major components of The Reboot Movement. Our Holistic Chef and Nutritionist, James Lockwood, believes that being healthy is not just the absence of disease, but should be an abundance of energy and vitality.
Chef James Lockwood and the Reboot view.
Chef James grew up in a nutrition minded family. His grandparents owned a large farm in rural Iowa where he was introduced to fresh vegetable juice and learned the importance of vitamins and minerals at the young age of eight. He and his brother would wander around the farm sampling the plethora of produce grown with love and according to the seasons. These early experiences instilled in him the love of fresh and natural food and an appreciation of the healing power of proper nutrition. Since then he has worked with celebrity chefs, doctors and naturopathic physicians who pride themselves on the quality and integrity of the foods they recommend or serve. The collection of these experiences have greatly influenced Chef James nutritional philosophy and play a key role in how he sources and prepares meals at The Reboot Movement. He and the entire staff of trainers work as a team to create the ultimate experience for each and every client to achieve profound results in a short amount of time. So what does it mean to take a Holistic Approach to health and wellness? It means that we need to look and the whole picture – your environment, stress levels, fitness and energy levels, spirituality, love, nutrition just to name a few. The whole is the sum of all the parts. Each one needs to be recognized and nurtured. We at The Reboot Movement know that with a little encouragement and the right information, you can work your way to a clearer mind, sustained energy levels, emotional well being and a deep understanding of what your body needs and when it needs it. Once you begin to experience this newfound health, you will not only feel better, but you will protect your system from many diseases and slow the aging process. This all means that you will be able to do all the things that you love with more enthusiasm and for much longer! WELLNESS
Some bodies hold on to toxins, some don’t. If you are one of those people who are killing themselves to stay in shape (and you know who are), taking one hard workout class after the next and you come home after a seven mile run, take all your clothes off, look in the mirror and still have excess inches, your body may be holding on to toxins! We take the time to prepare and perfect our Thanksgiving dinner, ordering our organic turkey, making the stuffing and pumpkin pie just right. Days before the big day we are cleaning carpets, shopping, kneading dough, all for the sake of consuming a delicious holiday meal. Why is having a perfect dinner more important than preparing and crafting a healthy and more perfect body? Toxins are eliminated from the body through the colon, liver, or kidney.
DETOX
WHAT’S THE POINT?
If one or more of these organs are challenged, it’s likely your body is holding on to toxins which will affect your health and weight negatively. Detoxing is right for you if: 1. 2. 3. 4.
You desire a whole new relationship with food and eating habits You want a nutrient based detoxification You want to shed those extra inches You want to heal your organs and biosphere in your gut
As a “Health Coach” I’ve studied many different detox and diet theories. Recently I tried a new weight loss metabolic detox program…. It really worked! I lost inches and feel great! The “Pure Body Cleanse System” Weight Loss Metabolic Detox by Simply Young… It’s the perfect combination “weight loss and detox” in a seven day program; complete with food guidelines, protein powder, para-cleanse, vital flow, tropical digest... etc. It even comes with a measuring tape and shaker. You can find it at the Vitamin Barn, 23823 Malibu Rd. or order online at www.befit.simplyyoung.com Our body is the perfect machine, even when we do our best to challenge our health, it’s constantly striving to detoxify itself. The term “DETOXIFICATION” refers to our body’s ability to transfer and eliminate toxins. The buildup of toxins in human tissue can impact all body systems. Telltale signs of toxic overload can include acne, rashes, headaches, fatigue, muscle weakness, fertility issues, memory loss, irritable bowel syndrome and challenged immune function. Low-level, long-term toxic exposure has also been linked to chronic conditions. A healthy intestine eliminates toxins every single day. So, if your colon is in proper condition and the majority of your meals are healthy, you’ll eliminate the toxins on a daily basis. If however, your intestine is in bad shape, the toxins will leak through its walls and enter the body. This is where the liver comes in. A healthy liver will transform the toxins into harmless water-soluble molecules and the kidney will excrete them. However, if your liver is overloaded, it will release the toxins back into the body, storing them in different tissues such as fat, brain and nervous system, thus contributing to poor health. So, the first step to your health will be to balance your digestive system and make sure your intestines, colon and liver are working properly; then you can rid the stored toxins in your body. In order to do that, you will need enough antioxidants. Load up on antioxidants such as avocados, berries, greens, cabbage, fish and fish oils, garlic, mushrooms, almonds, pomegranates, sunflower seeds, flax seeds… etc. Also, while detoxing, it’s important to avoid alcohol, dairy, meat, chicken, soy products and grains. When you clean it all out, everything works, looks and feels better!

FAT AS FUEL
BY TED MC DONALD
IS YOUR SUGAR TANK CAUSING YOU TO CRASH AND BURN?
I did everything I was told. I carb loaded, I ate my steel cut oats in the morning, topped with a banana and maybe some raisins. Then I’d have my pre-workout drink before, my recover drink after, then a protein shake. All healthy fuel with fruits, etc. But for someone like me, too much of a good thing can turn bad. I’m insulin resistant, which means I am pre-diabetic. Or at least I was. I used to burn sugar as fuel, now I use fat. There is so much science and frankly, conflicting science on the issue of using carbohydrates or fat for fuel. With the obesity epidemic, so many people want to burn off their fat, so it seems counter intuitive to be eating a high fat diet. Another argument is that on a high fat diet, you’re bound to have animal fat which may increase your risk for heart disease. If you’re not confused already, just start doing a little research on vegan diets vs. paleo vs. low carb high fat vs. pescatarian vs. the standard American diet (SAD). It’s baffling. I never had any symptoms. After turning 40, I decided to have my blood checked. I felt great on the inside, looked fit on the outside, my energy levels were fine, and I was super active. I assumed that the extra carbs and sugars would burn off from the amount of exercise I was doing. At 43, I finally had my blood work done and learned that I had insulin resistance in my adipose tissue. My doctor told me that it was nothing to panic about and that we could make some lifestyle changes to correct it, then retest the blood. After 6 months on a low carb, high fat, moderate protein diet, I was able to increase my HDL (the good cholesterol) by 15% and decrease my triglycerides by 15% and that is just the beginning! One of the biggest changes is in my energy levels throughout the day. I no longer have spikes of energy followed by crashes. And as an endurance athlete, it’s been an amazing transition. I no longer worry about what gels to have or how many carbs I need. My stomach no longer bothers me during training or in races and I never worry about overeating. I’m also as lean as ever. My diet is NOT for everyone. You are unique and your diet should be what works for you. I took an APO E genetic test. Mine is a 3/4 which means I’m at a higher risk for heart disease and diabetes. Yours may be different. Make sure you’re using a diet that suits your needs. First, get your blood work done. Go to hdlabsinc.com and find a doctor who does these labs. They are much better than your annual check-up, the science is cutting edge and will allow you to catch issues much further in advance. Next, create a plan for yourself based on the results. Finally, work with a doctor, nutritionist or health coach to help you back to good health. I’m happy to point you in the right direction on twitter @teddymcdonald.

If you would’ve told me I’d be running 3 hours on green tea for breakfast, or that I’d be riding a 100k mountain bike race for 5 and a half hours on 215 calories, or that I’d conquer the Leadville 100 MTB race in 9 hours and 45 minutes on less than 1000 calories of food, I would’ve said you’re crazy! But that is exactly what happened.

MAN ABOUT TOWN:
THE
LAST DINOSAUR An Everyman’s Guide To The New Woman By Marlon Young Continued from Issue 16 -Look, the movement was a great thing overall, obviously. However, with every action comes an equally strong and opposite reaction. Heavy on the opposite. The reaction, though, was less about the women’s movement and more about how we as men reacted to it. We weren’t ready. Plain and simple. Kind of like with Iraq. Great plan to go in. No plan for what to do if things didn’t turn out the way we thought. So we’re stuck. Stuck trying to come up with a plan on the fly and when that plan doesn’t work, come up with another less viable plan until we figure it out with heaps of casualties in the process. Our reaction to giving women the freedom that they deserved for so long was largely this: we abandoned our manhood. Gave it up. Put our testicles in a lock box and threw away the key. Stopped standing for something. Stopped getting into fist fights to solve our problems when we were too angry to talk anymore. Stopped laying down the laws in the house. Why? Because we felt guilty over how all the years that our Dads and those men before them treated women so badly. Treated them like they didn’t count outside of the bedrooms and kitchens. Treated them like second-class citizens. So, we pulled back on the macho stuff. We stopped enforcing the rules of social engagement and laws of attraction. Stopped it. We started to do what the women’s movement told us was the new and improved way to operate; include women in all that stuff. All that decision-making stuff. Get a woman’s take on how to better improve things. Put a woman in the Supreme Court. Let a woman run for president. Get out of a woman’s way and let her run the company, you misogynistic bastard! She’ll probably do a better job anyway. Yes, yes, yes! But don’t lose your balls, man! Why did we detach our balls? I understand apologizing for your actions but don’t lose the very nature of who you are. What makes you a man in the first place. We did though. Not each and every one of us. There’s still plenty of guys out there with nuts the size of cannonballs. Plenty of guys that, if a woman wants to open her own door, she’s going to have to cut his hand off first. I’m talking about the overall attitude of our society that says you’re some kind of throwback to the fifties if you want to stand up when a women leaves the table or if you insist on walking on the outside near the curb when you walk down the street with a woman. Our response was one of discomfort with being a “stereotypical” male. Then, after the initial apology, we kept apologizing. Remember when the schoolbooks read “HE said, HE went, HE did?” Remember when it changed to “he/she?” Apology. No more compliments on her looks at work no matter how innocent. Apology. “You’ve come a long way, baby.” Translation: “We’re sorry for holding you down. Need a light? Oh shit, you got your own. Sorry.” That apologizing continued to seep into all facets of our lives. Some of it we implemented ourselves but most of it was heaped on us through all areas of the media. Television shows began to have mother figures who were stronger and smarter than the father figures. In almost every family comedy show, the Dad is either the idiot or some over-bearing maniac that the mom has to apologize for. Archie Bunker; idiot racist. George Jefferson; overbearing idiot. Go down the list of comedies that you remember up until today and you’ll see what I mean. Those guys were not a reflection of what men had become but more a subliminal apology from us to say that we realize that we’re not the only smart person in the house so we are going to stop trying to be and listen to our wives more. So, we did. The problem with making the woman appear to be the only smart, level-headed person in the house is that women still operate primarily from a “feelings” place so some of the problems in the house that could have been taken care of with a strong “this is what we’re gonna do” now had to be talked about to be sure everyone “felt” that this was a good solution. The result being some problems weren’t solved as quickly as they could have been and, on top of that, men began to feel that their masculinity was not being appreciated. As a side note, I know sometimes I talk in the first person and sometimes in the third. It’s just how I talk, man. It isn’t that I’m trying be some scientist and examine men and women as these subjects in my spotless social laboratory or nothing. I’m relaxed and I’m talking to you and it’s a good conversation so bear with me on that. I’m not an English major. What the hell was I talking...oh, yea… So, we as men began to feel under-appreciated as masculine beings. Here’s one of the dilemmas that occurs with that: if you speak up about how this is making you feel, the thought is that you’re being less of a man. We don’t talk about our feelings, remember? But, if you DON’T speak up, you harbor resentment that your voice as a man is not being heard. What to do? Well, as a man, you think that for the betterment of the household and the relationship, it’s easier if you acquiesce. You’re the stronger one so you can suppress your feelings, right? So, how do you “fix” it, this problem that has come up and needs a solution? You can’t just let it sit around unresolved. It’ll eventually cause more problems. Gotta fix it. What do you do? What DO...you DO? You don’t want to discount what solution she has to offer but it isn’t coming fast enough for your taste but you know there will be trouble if you try to solve it alone when it clearly involves everyone in the house so everyone should have an input to the solution...at least all the adults. What do you do? You keep your mouth shut and go with the solution she came up with, that’s what. You sit and talk it out. What’s the harm in that? You’re sitting and talking. What’s the big deal? I’ll tell you. You’re setting the precedent that says we men don’t stand for anything. That we can’t make decisions on our own and stand by them. A precedent that says we lost our backbone. Our testicles. With this constant action of apologizing, it seems that we can’t seem to keep our families together. The divorce rate in the country is well over fifty percent. It seems we don’t know how to raise our kids. Over sixty-five percent of the kids today born to young black women between the ages of eighteen and twenty-four are born with no man around to provide for them. What? Yes! Why? Because men are visceral learners. You want to teach your son not to play with guns? Take him out to the woods when he turns seven, give him a 12 gauge shotgun and let him shoot it. Three things are gonna happen: 1) that BOOM will scare the shit out of him. 2) the recoil will make his shoulder so sore he won’t be able to lift his arm for a week and 3) he won’t touch a gun again. I promise you. And just to be sure of that, you add this little tidbit of info; “Touch this gun without my permission, I’ll chop off your fingers and feed ‘em to the dog.” Done. Gun control at it’s most effective. Worked when I was a kid. Wanna know how I learned that electricity was dangerous? I’ll tell you. My Dad, who knew how to do everything, showed me how to wire the new portion that we added onto the house. He showed me once...just once. Then, he sat back in a chair with a glass of cold lemonade in his hand and had me do it without his instruction. So, I climb up the ladder, screwdriver in hand, and promptly wrapped my hand around a wire that had God-knows-how-many thousand volts of life-taking electricity running through it. I was immediately thrown from the ladder and to the awaiting floor below, probably twitching and smoking.
